Sur is always great, but especially on Fridays - Review - Miami - The Infatuation

"Sur isn’t open on weekends, which is something you don’t see very often in the Miami restaurant world. But the Little Haiti spot proves you don’t have to save a chill lunch outing for a Saturday. Instead, come here at noon on a Tuesday, order a milanesa sandwich, and forget about your company’s north stars for an hour. Their 11am to 5pm window during the week, while tight, doesn’t stop the place from filling up with loyal customers. Part of it has to do with their empanadas, but a large part is the lovable family that runs the place. photo credit: CLEVELAND JENNINGS / @EATTHECANVASLLC video credit: Mariana Trabanino photo credit: CLEVELAND JENNINGS / @EATTHECANVASLLC photo credit: CLEVELAND JENNINGS / @EATTHECANVASLLC photo credit: CLEVELAND JENNINGS / @EATTHECANVASLLC Pause Unmute After a third visit, one of the owners will probably start to recognize your face and ask if you want that squash empanada again (to that, you say yes). It’s no wonder the place has a consistent flow of regulars coming to get their milanesa fix, or dedicating their Friday nights (the only day they stay open past 5pm), to a long wine and empanada hang. Every other Friday at around 7pm, Sur’s back patio turns into a neighborhood pizza and empanada party. A DJ spins vinyl inside a non-functional airstream, and strangers and regulars gather at a long communal table—think The Last Supper, only way better because cold beer and steaming empanadas are involved. Fridays are also the only day they make Argentine square pizzas, which can sell out as quickly as 2pm. If that happens, get their magnificent tortilla española that’s also a Friday special and a compelling reason to have eggs after 10am. Food Rundown Squash Empanada You shouldn’t come here for just one empanada. You should get an entire spread and play empanada roulette. The cheesy squash flavor of this one is a perfect sweet and salty combination. photo credit: CLEVELAND JENNINGS / @EATTHECANVASLLC Tortilla This Spanish omelette is only available on Fridays. It’s topped with a thick layer of tangy sundried tomato pesto and a side of crusty bread to make mini egg toasts with. Our only critique is that it’s gone in a matter of minutes because it’s small. Maybe order two. photo credit: CLEVELAND JENNINGS / @EATTHECANVASLLC Steak Milanesa There’s no way to eat this without looking primal. Embrace it, and enjoy the messy, crispy milanesa in all its glory. photo credit: CLEVELAND JENNINGS / @EATTHECANVASLLC Pizza On Fridays (and only on Fridays), Sur has a counter full of thick, square slices with crispy crust and delicious Argentinian-style toppings. We have loved every slice we’ve eaten, like one topped with hard-boiled eggs and olives. Their version of a fugazza, which is covered in onions and mozzarella, is also excellent. photo credit: CLEVELAND JENNINGS / @EATTHECANVASLLC" - Mariana Trabanino

The 19 Best Pizza Places In Miami

"On Fridays (and only on Fridays), this casual Argentinian lunch spot in Little Haiti has a counter full of thick, square slices with crispy crust and delicious Argentinian-style toppings. We have loved every pizza we’ve eaten, which range from ones topped with hard-boiled eggs and olives to their version of a fugazza, which is covered in onions and mozzarella. This is a Friday lunch break that’ll give you the motivation to make it through the week, and their slightly hidden backyard patio is a great call if the weather’s nice. " - ryan pfeffer, virginia otazo

10 Can’t-Miss Empanadas in Miami

"Daniel Alonso and his wife, Vanesa Suhr, are the magic behind this charming Argentinean gem in Little Haiti. Standard favorites like beef, ham and cheese or shredded chicken in a creamy béchamel are staples, however, be sure to sample the creative out-of-the-box fillings like blue cheese and onions; corn and mozzarella; and squash and goat cheese." - Alona Martinez

The 12 Best Restaurants in Little Haiti

"If you're in need of a lunch break that'll help you forget how bad the first half of your day has been going, go to Sur. The casual spot has a small menu of sandwiches, empanadas, and salads. It's all really delicious—especially the simple brie and salami sandwich. Their empanadas are also some of our favorite Argentinian empanadas in town. But please try to come here on Friday, when they make excellent Argentinian pizza by the slice. The dining room has counter seating good for solo diners and tables perfect for a lunch date. It's a great place to work or just hang out for a lazy meal. " - ryan pfeffer

The Humble Empanada Gets a Makeover at Sur in Little Haiti - Eater Miami

"The first thing one notices about Sur, which announces itself with a hand-carved sign perched atop the front door, is how easy it is to miss. The second is the handsome interior. Enter the compact space inside and it spills over with charm, beginning with more handmade wooden signs to the numerous tea kettles, silver jugs and inspirational signs (all gifts from regulars) to the inviting bar made from treated planks of cedar and a large concrete slab. There are various nostalgic items — an old foosball table brought from Argentina, for example, along with an antique step stool chair, bearing its history in several layers of chipped paint, strategically spaced around an inviting communal table running the width of almost the entire interior of Sur. Old, caged light fixtures, salvaged by co-owner Daniel Alonso, add to the appeal of the space." - Alona Martinez

After visiting the Vizcaya Museum & Gardens, I stopped by SUR in Little Haiti for lunch. Park along the street and walk into another world. The cafe itself is a place where neighbors hang out over good food and drink. The woman at the register is super friendly. To eat, I ordered five empanadas- two beef with olives, two chicken and scallion, and one mushroom. Each is their top selling empanadas. It comes with a bottle of hot sauce. Each was very, very good, but my favorite was the chicken and scallions. They also sell sandwiches and salads. To drink, I ordered a Mexican coke and a cafe con leche. There's plenty of seatings, outlets, and strong free wifi. I ended up working here for an hour!

Google
“To Sur With Love” Please tell me someone else used that. This place has genuine-ness that only comes from doing what you love. One weekday at late lunch all the customers were truly relaxed, like whatever time you spend here is time off. We had a 4-empanada share and it was practically a meal. They are fully emotionally satisfying, and some categories might be the best of their kind in Miami. Many many empanada varieties to try, and the sight of others’ sandwiches burned into my memory. The beverage experience has rich character and savvy selections. I had a small (literally) coffee at the end of the meal and it brought me up to speed. Some of you should know there is meat there. Also there can be vegetarian happiness. Look at the pictures.

Google
I was in the area and checked what had high ratings and SUR popped up so I went over to try it and was very pleasantly surprised by this place. The staff was very nice and the empanadas were amazing. I mean I tried one and proceeded to eat the rest before even getting back home. They were that good. The deserts are also amazing. I got a dolce leche pie to go and well that didn’t make it home either… highly recommend this little gem of a spot.

Google
If there was a way to rate more than 5 stars I would across the board! The empanadas (and I tried all of them) are AMAZING!!! The service is fantastic but the atmosphere is where this place shines the brightest! The vibes are chill, authentic and lively. Check out the video from their new Friday night vibe with their new beer and liquor license!

Google
Amazing. Magic empanadas, magic food and a magic place. Thank you for hosting my friend and I, right when closing we got there and they still took good care of us. Cheers. Coming back 1 million times.

Stayed at an Airbnb near by and walked over. All of our group of 8 was so happy with our orders. The staff is friendly, the food is fresh and delicious. Probably will be back today! Great place.

10/10 would recommend! Everything was wonderful. From the food to the ownership. Do yourself a favor and stop by; you won't regret it!

Yelp
My husband and I stopped here for lunch on a Thursday afternoon. We were greeted immediately. The ordering process is pretty straightforward. They have a menu with empanadas, which I will be going back to try one. My husband and I ordered the Chicken and Brie sub which was delicious. We decided for water instead of any drinks they had. The water was well presented in a glass jug. It was so refreshing. My husband and I enjoyed a quiet lunch, the music added to the ambiance. I'd definitely recommend this business, service and food were excellent! They had a few desserts, however, since I will be going back, I'll try it then! I'll update my review once I try the empanadas. You've read my review, I can't wait to read yours! go ahead and check them out!

Yelp
The empanadas at this place are DELICIOUS! They are made to order and are like no other empanadas I've had before and I've had my fair share. They also have a very refreshing mint lemonade that they made fresh to order as well. I haven't tried any other items of their menu but they all look remarkably appetizing. As I wait for my empanadas I check out the meals of those whose are dining in. :) A few years ago This place was recommended to me by my good friend who discovered it while attending a workshop nearby & found it as a viable lunch option. I'm so glad that I followed up and gave them a try. You should too!! You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
The best Argentinian empanadas i've had in Miami! Wow! They bake them to order, the dough is perfectly baked, soft but flaky, seasoned perfectly and they are nicely filled. I also had a chocolate alfajor that was delish. Will definitely come back to try their sandwiches. Service is great and the ambiance is cute and cozy.

Yelp
Sur is a SLAMMMMIN place that feels like a family hole in wall business. This is one of the second places in Miami that bakes the Empanadas to order. FRESH TO ORDER!!! It makes a huge difference because they are fresh and hot! Super fresh and tasty...
google avatar

Katherine D.

Yelp
Some of the best empanadas I've had in Miami! Highly recommend the bleu cheese and onion - super yummy. Staff were extremely friendly and accommodating, offering water and a table to sit at even though we ordered to-go. Cute little restaurant with indoor seating and funky decor - absolutely love it. Highly, highly recommend!

Marcela N.

Yelp
Hidden gem. Very homey, delicious empanadas, cafecito and great service. It's pretty small space and has a big lunch rush and another rush around 3pm but worth it!
google avatar

Yelp
I discovered this place while exploring some of the neighborhoods in Miami. It was a welcome treat. Great atmosphere and service. I ordered the chicken sandwich and was more than pleased. I will definitely be back. Stop in if you are in the area!

Yelp
Everything from the food to the service was outstanding! Highly recommend making the trip here for their amazing food. My favorite was the mushroom and Gouda empanada
google avatar

Al L.

Yelp
The food was ok. Was expecting to be a bit more tasty. People raves about the empanadas and it was ok. Very casual environment, so perfect to go if you want something laid back From a service standpoint; a bit disappointing. It took us quite a while to get their attention when we got our order wrong.

Jason B.

Yelp
I had a great experience eating here. Friendly staff and food was delicious. Make sure to try the empanadas and the milanesa sandwhich!

Yelp
Review of Empanadas only Flavors - 4.2/5 Textures - 4/5 Presentation - 4.3/5 Value for money - 3.5/5 Would return? Yes Must-try: Blue cheese and caramelized onions empanada The biggest differentiator of these empanadas is that they bake them to order - major plus! Most Argentinian empanadas are baked in batches and kept warm until people order them, but there is NOTHING like a freshly baked empanada. The dough is also quite different, slightly similar to a super thin pizza dough cooked in a firewood oven! It was crispy and not oily at all, but it left my fingers dusty, which I didn't love. The fillings are nice and bonus points for creativity. The regular flavors are not super special, but the weird flavors are great! My favorite one was the blue cheese & caramelized onions one.

Yelp
SUR's food is fresh and tasty. I have visited a few times and have always enjoyed their menu and wide selection. The owners and staff are always welcoming, genuine and proud of their creations. The dining area is welcoming, cozy and non pretentious, reasonable prices for the high quality that truly shows care and passion.
google avatar

David L.

Yelp
By far the best empanadas in miami. Haven't had anything even close to this. Don't forget to check out the sandwiches too. Chicken and Brie is super delicious

Evelin M.

Yelp
Definitely a hidden gem! The best empanadas I've ever eaten. They taste better than my homemade empanadas, and they were super hot because they bake them once you order. I also tried the membrillo pasta frola and the alfajor de maicena and dulce de leche that were to die for. Absolutely recommend!!!
google avatar

Tanner B.

Yelp
Sur is a cute little place that feels like a family business. This is one of only places in Miami I have seen that truly bakes the Empanadas to order. It makes a difference because they are incredible.

Alyx M.

Yelp
Went here for lunch during a long layover in Miami & was thoroughly enchanted! The empanadas were SO good, as was the Quince pie I had for the dessert. And the ambiance was fun & eclectic. I will definitely eat here again, the next time I'm in Miami.
google avatar

Yelp
I am so happy I stumbled upon this gem of a place! I want to start off this review by the customer service and amazing hospitality the barista has! She explained every single empanada item to us, and the 5 vegan ones that aren't on the menu. Sur has some high top seats, benches and a backyard area that is the cutest. We came hungry for empanadas, we ordered: - spinach and cheese - blue cheese and onion - mushrooms and Gouda - caprese - squash and goat cheese The crust is super flakey and thin and these empanadas are baked (which I prefer). I can eat an unlimited amount of empanadas and even though they were all amazing and I would re order all of them my favorites were the spinach and cheese, blue cheese and onion and the squash.... Ok maybe they were all good because I loved the mushroom one too! I will def be back here and I actually will order a dulce de leche dessert on my way out! They also have sandwiches, salads and pastries!
google avatar

Stephanie G.

Yelp
The food here is amazing! Authentic Argentinian empanadas, alfajores and more. Please ignore the very few negative comments in reviews I've come across as they are totally inaccurate. The service is friendly, attentive and the food comes out quick! My only wish is that they were open on weekends too, it's that good!! I also love the decor inside,
google avatar

Jinger S.

Yelp
Wow the goat cheese and mushroom quiche was creamy delicious and flavorful! My son & husband had a bacon and cheese / ham cheese / squash goat cheese empanadas / chicken Dijon sandwich. They were very happy with the taste of each item. We enjoyed the decorations of the cafe, we sat on a automobile bench!
google avatar

Benito M.

Yelp
This place was nice for a quick bite. A friend and i stopped by for lunch and even though it was pretty full the service was quick and the food didn't take long to come out. The chicken Brie was amazing and tasted very fresh and vibrant.

Adela G.

Yelp
Loved this place! Shared a lunch meal with a friend. A beef empanada and then a mushroom quiche with salad. Great food! Great vibe!

Eddie P.

Yelp
Best casual food in Miami. The salads, empanadas and baked goods are all exceptional!
google avatar

Josh F.

Yelp
I want to go back and try the quiche, it was huge and looked fluffy loved that they put whole boiled eggs in it. My boss and I shared the onion and cheese empanada and the steak milanesa both were out of the world. Wish I would have taken pictures.
google avatar

Jenny L.

Yelp
Imagine walking the streets of Argentina, and you get a hankering for a coffee. You walk into SUR and are greeted by the lovely owners. After hearing about their special menu, you have lunch. Your meal comes out on these gorgeous cutting boards - a nice touch. The atmosphere is comfortable, homey, and inviting. You could spend hours here, and you do. I love this place. I tried it for the first time earlier this week and just came back from my second visit. Today we got the squash + goat cheese and blue cheese + onion empanadas, the chicken dijon with a dulce de leche dessert. Of course, they were outstanding. I can't wait to see how well this place does. Keep up the awesome work guys!
google avatar

Annaliese T.

Yelp
Such delicious food! Everything is made from scratch, atmosphere is great, and they even have games (chess, backgammon, foosball)! The owner and staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, they make you feel like family straight away. I can't wait to come back! Ordered: Chicken and cheese empeñada Squash and goat cheese empeñada Bacon and cheese empeñada Dulce de leche pastry with toasted merengue

Christine P.

Yelp
Wow!!! Amazing & authentic! Fresh & delicious. Hip & trendy decor. Incredible service!
google avatar

Jasmine G.

Yelp
LOVE ordering from here! Service is quick and everything tastes so fresh. The food is simple yet delicious!! Highly recommend.
google avatar

Yelp
These empanadas are a religious experience. They have a thinner yet slightly toasted, perfectly-cooked shell, and smooth balance of meats, sauce, cheese, etc. and really hit the spot. I've tried most of the usual suspects around east side of Miami, Wynwood and the Gables, but like these better. The classic flavors and some of the creations are great, one or two tho weren't my thing.
google avatar

Tracy M.

Yelp
Sandwiches, salads and empanadas and delicious fresh lemonade with mint. I had the tuna salad. It was so delicious and would definitely get it again. I also had the refreshing fresh lemonade with mint. Fast service too!
google avatar

Jimmy M.

Yelp
I was recommended to try SUR by a friend, and I am so glad I did. The Argentine empanadas are incredibly authentic and the choices are varied. Homemade sweets, sandwiches and salads are also on the menu. I have tried all of these items and its was consistently fresh and delicious. I do suggest whenever you are in the area not to miss SUR. It is an oasis in a desert of mediocrity.
google avatar

Ossip B.

Yelp
Super nice people working here who make good food. Every time I go there I never feel let down. The food is good, the prices are fair, and the service is inviting. What more can you ask for?

Vicky A.

Yelp
One of my new favorite places in Miami, if not my favorite! Its not easy to find a gem like this, where you see this love and dedication. Their alfajores are AMAZING, the milanesa sandwich, fugazzetta, quince and dulce de leche pastelitos, everythings delicious, fresh and homemade. The owners are very sweet and warm and make you feel like home If i lived nearby this would definitely my go-to place! Thank you!!

Camila S.

Yelp
Awesome little place. Salad with tuna light and delightful. Highly recommend for lunch.
google avatar

Brandon D.

Yelp
Both of the sandwiches we got were really good, chicken empanada was decent but fairly priced food that was really good
google avatar

Valerie R.

Yelp
The empanadas are so fresh here. Each one is made to order with fresh ingredients. The crust is very thin and the empanadas are baked in a pizza oven so they are very light. Best flavours are chicken and scallions, corn and mozzarella, and beef. There is a cookie dessert with dulce de leche that is amazing. Sur is 14 miles from my house (I live in the Grove) but everytime I am downtown or north of it, I make a special stop at Sur.

Jane R.

Yelp
Excellent cafe with great empanadas. Pastry is crumbly and not greasy. Combos of fillings such high quality. ... And it's not just empanadas! Salads and sandwiches. The ambiance is so warm and welcoming. Finish with a tasting of their sweet pastries and good coffees.
google avatar

Gisella G.

Yelp
Best empanadas Argentinian style in town. Best service, music and ambience. The owners Vane and Dani rock!
google avatar

M A.

Yelp
Best empanadas in town by far! Soft and thin dough with delicious fillings. Going to Sur is having a whole cultural experience. My favorites are Chicken and Scallions, Mushrooms, Blue Cheese and Onions. The Lemonade with mint is a plus and you must have a cortadito with an alfajor. TOP TOP TOP Valen and Daniel are the best hosts and you will feel like you are at home surrounded by friends!
google avatar

Brian W.

Yelp
Great food and service! Boutique venue with a nice outdoor area. Perfect reason to support a small business like this. Intimate service and phenomenal food.
google avatar

Shawn L.

Yelp
The food here is amazing! Best empanadas I have ever had! Definitely most try!! If u are looking for a sandwich look no further!

S M.

Yelp
Fast service. Cute place. Empanadas are kind of small for the cost. The dulce pie was super tasty and not too sweet. Would recommend.
google avatar

Lucas E.

Yelp
This place has the most amazing empanadas I have ever had. The crust is soft and flaky but not soggy and the filling savor and juicy, its magic. Probably among the best empanadas ive had outside of South America.
google avatar

Dee C.

Yelp
So good and fresh. I had the tuna salad beautiful presentation and it was really really tasty. Really nice decor comfortable. There is a wide range if empanadas. They look so good but I havnt tried. Wil definitely be back to try the sandwiches

Yelp
Sandwiches are outstanding and the empanada selection is soft, fresh and fantastic. Great place to pop in for a quick snack.
google avatar

Yelp
Fresh and delicious. Friendly staff, but not overbearing. The man behind the counter recommended 4 empanada for me, and they were all delightful. The chicken scallion especially! He was impressed I was reading Borges, and I was impressed that he was so kind. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Amanda T.

Yelp
Amazing! As a pescatarian I'm always on the hunt for a delicious tuna sandwich. This was by far the best tuna sandwich I've ever had ... I literally figured out my yelp password JUST to post this. Super impressed by this place! I will most definitely be trying their vegan empanada next!! Cheers to these guys!
google avatar

Roy I.

Yelp
Great place for sandwiches and their empanadas are phenomenal. Highly recommend anything on the menu.
google avatar

Kristen T.

Yelp
We come here for the absolutely delicious empanadas and incredibly friendly staff. The place is owned and operated by a family who is so welcoming. The attention to detail and quality of the food is top notch. Today we also had the quiche, which is as beautiful as it is delicious also. We have yet to try the sandwiches, but I just watched them make one with prosciutto that I will definitely have to come back for.
