Today, I picked up a pack of salmon sashimi from the market. It tasted just as I expected, it was filling and fresh. Not bad at all for lunch. At first I thought I would need more than one packet of soy sauce, but it ended up being more than enough. They have a wide range of groceries and food items you can find with ease, especially for the size of the store. Not to mention that the employees are quite friendly. Overall, good vibes and good food, 4/5.

My first time here and I like their sushi selection. The fishes were really good quality. They also have a decent selection of desserts. I really liked their creme brulee selection.

Conveniently located at the corner of E 4th Ave and San Mateo Dr, a few stores away from the famous Taishoken Ramen and in the heart of downtown San Mateo, Suruki Supermarket is a must-checkout location when you're in the area. You can find parkings (with fees) easily either in front or just 1-2 blocks away from the supermarket. Highly recommend you avoid lunch hours though as it's harder to find parkings. At 10am in the morning, you can see a line of people outside the store, waiting for the it to open. They're all here for the fresh, of high quality and reasonably priced bentos, bowls, sushi, and sashimi dishes. As soon as you walk in the door, all the deliciously-looking food on the left side of the store will capture your heart. You'll see aisles of hot food first, freshly prepared daily and presented with care. As you walk on and make a right turn, you'll see a sea of endless sashimi, sushi and nigiri varieties. The hardest thing for me every time I come here is to not buy everything LOL. The quality of their food is top notch. Today I bought a set of salmon sashimi and a chirashi bowl with uni and otoro (fatty tuna). The fish are exceptionally fresh and melt in my mouth! Something could cost me $$ to $$$ if I ordered in an expensive Japanese restaurant. But here at Suruki, I can get similar quality sashimi for a fraction of the price (typically $12-16). Another best kept open secret is that you can actually order party trays of sashimi here from the store. Simply go to the back of the store where you'll see display of fish fillets and inquire there with the staff. Like every other Japanese restaurant, Suruki also carries all other Japanese-related stuff like shampoos, skin cares, snacks, wines, etc. Everything is well-displaced and the store looks clean and well-kept. Suruki is a small store but I enjoy the coziness of a small store over a huge supermarket anytime. Lastly, all the cashier staff here are friendly and accommodating, highlighting the hospitality of Japanese cultures. I always have a great time every time I shop here and highly recommend you check this out if you're in the area.

Suruki Supermarket is an absolute gem - the establishment (although not this particular location) has been a beloved neighborhood staple since 1974. Identifying a need in his local community, Shuji Suruki started the first door-to-door Japanese grocery store on wheels bringing the flavors and nostalgia of his home country to the greater San Francisco Bay Area. In 1990 their brick and mortar store moved to its current location in downtown San Mateo in 1990. Suruki is noticeably smaller than your average grocery store; however, what it lacks in size it makes up in flavor. They boast fresh product, Asian snacks, high-grade sashimi, grab-and-go meals, and little Japanese trinkets as well. Suruki is truly a one-stop shop for any of your Japanese grocery needs and more if you're looking for some ready-to-eat food. We decided to browse around the supermarket while waiting for lunch and we were immediately taken aback by the wealth held within its walls and walked up with many more items than we had expected to - including some mochi, salad dressing, condiments, and an onigiri mold. If we hadn't already made lunch plans, we would have been extremely tempted to try one of their ready-made food options like their chirahi bowl or their bentos. My absolute favorite find of the day was handmade mochi from Osaka-ya in Sacramento! I moved from Sacramento back to the San Francisco Bay Area six months ago and something I definitely missed from my old home was the deliciously soft and flavorful mochi from Osaka-ya. Imagine my absolute surprise and delight when I discovered that Suruki stocks their goodies in their store, promoting their small business and giving back to the community. Suruki truly is a local treasure and I'll definitely be coming back the next time I'm in the San Mateo area (or to be honest I'll probably make a dedicated trip down just to go to Suruki) to pick up some more grocery items and hopefully enjoy some of the food!

Google
This supermarket is a must stop. Regardless of whether you're hungry looking for food or already ate and heading out. The hot and cold Togo items are super yummy. Everything Japanese. Seriously looking for fish. Go to the back. Our family loved it. Don't forget about park across the street. Perfect place for a quick picnic.

Yelp
Been coming here for probably close to 20 years plus & supporting this local family owned gem.. It's family owned and all the members I have met have all been so nice. To me, It's also special to see the son even has his late father's picture up at the fish counter still. I believe he might have been the og that started the family business. The fish market in the back ALWAYS has fresh sashimi / poke' grade fish. I only get my fish to make poke here!!! They will slice it sashimi style for you or do your poke cuts as well. I like to just get the chunk and cut it myself however. They also give you wasabi, have sushi rice hot and for sale as well. Pro tip: if it's warm out you can ask for a little bag of ice to keep your fish cold till it gets home. Love that. It's came in handy for me a few times, and knowing my fish is staying fresh gives me peace of mind. Aside from the fish the whole market has all types of goodies. From things you can cook yourself (ramen broths and hot pot broths ready to be cooked up and add your own fixings, noodles, produce ect. They also have pre made bento box items, musubis of different varieties, salad, poke, sashimi all to go. At the end of the day, ( I believe 4 ish) people start lining up to go for the half off prepared food rush. Great idea and good deals, if you get there in line but if you're at the end it gets wiped out pretty quick. Weekends can sometimes be a little crazy, but the lines always move swiftly.

Yelp
Love Suruki market!! This mom & pop style market in downtown San Mateo has a bunch of Japanese groceries and snacks that you'll need. They have a vast selection of fresh sashimi trays & hot food trays that are delicious & so worth the price!! This is my absolute favorite part of the market. They also have custom party platters you can order in advance online. The market is usually busy on the weekend but I I've never experienced them running out of any food if you make it by afternoon. They don't have a seating area to eat, but people stand outside or there's also a cute park across the street with benches/picnic area. Would definitely recommend!!

Yelp
Very cool concept and prices are always good too in San Mateo . " Not the cleanest experience "but not many other choices in this area .

Yelp
We had suruki two days in a row. The first time we had karage and a huge platter of hamachi sashimi. The sashimi was very top tier quality and worth the food. Today, we got two bowls beef bowls, teas and a salmon hand roll. Delicious food for a quick and convenient grab.

Yelp
Great supermarket! Full on Japanese exclusives as well as hair/skin care. Came there for some food though. Checkout included chopsticks, and utensils, anything you could need to eat. Great options and cheap options for sashimi. Ambiance was like any other supermarket. Got a select handful, good price. Also got furikake & chili oil!

Yelp
I think people forget the small mom and pop style stores in the US and honestly there's a lot of reason for that but Suruki really stands above the rest simply with their selection of hot bentos, sashimi, nigiri, and chirashi bowls Plus, I'm gonna let the cat out the bag, they have 50% off these premade foods at 4 PM (unsure if every day) but I heard from a local and I was lucky enough to snag a simple chicken teriyaki bowl months ago and have been hooked since But fret not, the bowls aren't the only highlight, their sashimi and nigiri is actually worldly, easily compares to quality Japanese restaurants in the Bay, LA, and yes even NYC for a fraction of the cost. They're worth the regular price but who doesn't love it when it's half off and they provide chopsticks and soy sauce too when you pay To put into perspective, their chirashi bowls had the rice grains each individually cooked without any grains breaking. Those that care about sushi will know how important the quality of the rice is, but to make it more insane it's also properly seasoned with vinegar. Yes, the same ones you'd see at quality sushi places I won't lie that I often will try my best to time my arrival to get their discounts but even without this place already exceeds my expectations with the quality and affordability of their foods. I find it better supporting smaller business knowing how much they care about the customer's experience If you cared, the line you'd see around 3:30 is because of these deals. They also have a smart system where the food section is roped off and there's an attendant at both the entrance and exit so nobody can game the system. It's such a small but highly appreciated aspect of their excellence in customer satisfaction. Let's be honest, we all know or have witnessed people who will game the system especially in Western cultures so seeing this is a nice safeguard to those bad actors making it more essential to come early if you want to get those deals Furthermore, the selection is limited by what they don't sell before the area gets roped off (unsure about time) but it makes sense they'd want to sell at full price and encourage to get it even outside these discounted times because it's reasonably priced and high quality

Yelp
First time at Suruki Supermarket for the sushi. After 4 pm the hot items and sushi is half off. But get there early as people start lining up before 3. As far as the fish it is fresh and good quality. Definitely take a peak inside to see what is left cause once you get in there it is chaos with people grabbing everything. The store itself is clean and bright. The checkout line was quick and easy. In and out in about 10 minutes total. Street parking only.

Yelp
Fantastic selection of ready-to-eat food! Would highly recommend this market to anyone looking for a tasty grab-and-go lunch. The market was buzzing with people around noon on a Saturday, with everyone grabbing premade bento boxes, fresh sashimi, and onigiri for lunch. They had everything from hayashi omurice to yakisoba, and more varieties of sushi than I could count. I would highly recommend coming early in the day as I can easily see them selling out by mid-afternoon. Everything looked incredibly fresh, appetizing, and was very reasonably priced. Most dishes ranged from $4-$16. My friend and I grabbed a beef teriyaki bowl ($11) salmon ikura bowl ($14), mixed maki set ($6.5), and seaweed salad ($3). The beef teriyaki was easily one of the best I've EVER had! The flavor of the sauce was deep and savory without being too salty, and the meat itself was deliciously tender and the perfect amount of fatty. The market employees were welcoming and kind. All in all, I live in San Francisco and would 100% go out of my way to drive to San Mateo to grab food from here again!

Yelp
I should've written this review last month, but life is busy! Anyway, I just wanted to give them another 5 stars for providing such a wonderfully fresh array of sushi and sashimi for my granddaughter's birthday party. I ordered a big tray of a variety of sushi, some rolls and some nigiri, and it was so beautiful. They included a large amount of wasabi and soy sauce along with chopsticks; it was so beautiful I hated to take any of the sushi out (but, of course, who can resist eating it?). I purposely ordered based on making a colorful tray (my granddaughter loves rainbows) and I was not disappointed. I also ordered half a pound of maguro and a quarter pound each of sake, chutoro, and hamachi; the sashimi also made for a beautiful tray. All the sushi and sashimi was devoured even though I had a ton of other food at the party. Everything was wonderful and couldn't be any fresher unless you prepared it at the pier after catching the fish! The sushi and sashimi was only enhanced by the customer service. I ordered online, but could only reserve two separate pick up times (one for sushi and one for sashimi). My son was going to pick up the order on his way to my house and I didn't want him to have to wait half an hour between pickups, so I called them and they made sure both orders were ready and available at the same time. The woman who made the arrangements coudn't have been nicer or more accommodating. I will definitely be ordering from them again!

Yelp
I heard about this market from a friend and decided to check it out for their fresh sashimi. She had told me that this market has fresh sashimi that you can order by the pound either online or through phone. They make beautiful trays for your order too! I called in an order about two days in advance, and they had all the fish I wanted to order in stock. On their online ordering platform, they have temaki (hand roll) or sashimi options. When ordering through the phone, they said that they have nigiri available as well. I was picturing that all of this would include the rice/seaweed already. Come the day of, the food pick up process was smooth and easy. The fish was ready on time. I stopped by the front of the market and was helped quickly for my order. Since I had placed a phone order, I gave them my name and verified my phone number, then paid at the checkout. They have utensils and napkins near the checkout. If you need soy sauce, you would need to ask them for it. The only minor issue was that the nigiri I had ordered didn't include rice. The option was for the fish to be cut in a nigiri style. Luckily, they sell cooked sushi rice by the pound (located near the fish station inside at the back). The fish itself was so fresh! I wish I lived closer by so I can order and visit more often! They accept credit cards (including American Express) with no minimums. Parking is metered on the street or there is a few paid parking garages. Otherwise, if you park farther away and walk, there is free street parking.

Yelp
Only talking about my 50% off 4PM experience!! Happened to be in the area around 3:30 on a Sunday and remembered that Suruki supermarket does 50% off at 4pm. I was around the 10th group in line at 3:30 and the line got super long after that. They started to let people in a bit before 4 and I was the last person to be let in in the first round!!! It's war in there!!!!! There's only a small section for the 50% off (left fridge area and some bentos/ready to eat food on the shelf on the right) so it's hard to get in there if people are crowding. Was only able to snag a salmon bento, tuna/salmon sashimi, and fatty tuna sashimi. The rolls looked good but those were taken real quick. I would say you have to come at least 3:30 or earlier to get anything decent since they don't limit people on how much they can buy. Maybe a weekday would be easier! The quality is definitely very good and with the 50% off, it's a steal!!! Will definitely be coming back if I'm in San Mateo around that time (:

Yelp
This store brought me back to living in Japan. They have a nice assortment of ready-made foods like onigiri, sandos, and bentos. Then there are aisles of shelf stable foods from condiments to snack foods and ingredients to make a yummy Japanese dinner. The store personnel are efficient and prepare the sashimi beautifully. There's a nearby parking lot with reasonable rates.

Yelp
This trip I was taken care of by Jimmy. He kept me informed that the mackerel was s little frozen, but since it was going to be my snack for tonight it wasn't a problem, the fish will be ready by then. The timing was perfect this time since I was there around noonish and the rush wasn't there yet. I ordered toro, hamachi, amber jack and mackerel as well a freshly made rainbow poke which consisted of some seaweed salad, tako, salmon, hamachi and maybe a little maguro. I had the first snack of the rainbow poke when I got to the truck. Their fish is so fresh as always. This is the place to get fantastic sashimi when in the bay area. Thank you Jimmy again!

Yelp
REVIEW IS FOR THE SASHIMI PLATTER WANT TO IMPRESS YOUR GIRLFRIEND FOR DATE NIGHT? HOSTING A BUNCH OF FRIENDS BUT DON'T KNOW WHAT TO SERVE? OR JUST CRAVING GOOD RAW FISH? Get a sashimi platter from Suruki & you won't regret it!!! Suruki's sashimi platter was a total hit for my at home omakase night! You can order online for pick up or order at the counter. The prices are clearly displayed: per pound per each type of fish. You can choose either no cut, sashimi or temaki (hand roll) style cut. The supermarket also has everything else you need to do omakase at home - I picked up sushi rice, ginger, seaweed salad and sauces. I ordered at the counter on a Friday afternoon and waited 20 minutes for the platter to be prepared. Suruki's recommendation was 1/2lb of fish per person. And this was in fact the perfect amount! My friends and I finished everything feeling so full and satisfied. The fish quality is amazing!!! I got the hamachi, amberjack, salmon, chutoro and scallop. Everything tasted so fresh, as if we went to an omakase restaurant. Highly highly recommend the chutoro. It was perfect amount of fattiness and it literally just melts in your mouth!!!! AHHHHH SO DELICIOUS! The scallop was my other favorite of the night. I have nothing but high remarks for the sashimi platter at Suriki's! The quality of fish is so good and so fresh! I can't believe I didn't do this sooner. Whether you order for just yourself or for bunch of people, Suruki is an one stop shop for everything you need! If you're craving sashimi, forget a restaurant, just come here instead! It's the same quality & cost way less!

Yelp
Been coming here since I was a kid. I've recommended this place to almost everyone I know. While the rolls and cooked dishes need a bit of work, the sashimi is a great quality for the price. There are cheaper grocery stores for actual groceries, but nowhere I've been to so far has beaten the ready to eat food quality here.
google avatar

Suzanna Z.

Yelp
I first heard about this place from TikTok. Me and my family come here to get sashimi when we're having sushi nights. The sashimi is so fresh and fairly priced. The fatty o toro is our favorite!! It literally melts in your mouth. If you decide to come the fish is located at the back of the store. We haven't been to a sushi restaurant since we've discovered this market.
google avatar

Yelp
This is specifically in regards to their sashimi. I would say the freshest in the SF-San Mateo area. Anytime I crave sashimi I either will pick up some in the pre-boxed area or order some in the back. I am a big fan of sushi rice so will also pick up a box as well. Their mac salad is also bomb and prob the best Hawaiian style salad I've had. Possibly even better than some in Hawaii! Def worth a stop. The park is about a block away and always nice to be able to grab a few things picnic on a sunny day. We have ordered party platters here as well! Can view their website and if ordering during the holidays please make sure you place in advance as it is first come first serve.

Yelp
This store is small and crowded. There's limited variety though I was able to get bottled Sapporo here. The lines are long. You will pay to park in this area.

Yelp
I love coming to Suruki market especially with all the variety of Japanese goods they sell here! When it comes to sushi, it's a MUST that we order sashimi from Suruki. They have the freshest sashimi and the cuts are huge! It is worth your money ordering from here when it comes to sashimi. What's also great is they have an online system that allows you to order ahead so they can prepare ahead and you just pick it up by the cash register. All the workers here are super friendly and I love coming here!

Louis L.

Yelp
High quality sashimi/sushi grade fish, offered to cut per your request, among the best quality in the Bay Area. Fresh and authentic Asian. Service is efficient and polite, great for the small supermarket setup. My regular go-to Japanese grocery shop. This store has been already opened 31 years. Wish it long live!

Yelp
I love that there's a nearly full-service Japanese supermarket in downtown San Mateo. It isn't the biggest but it packs a big punch. Their seafood counter is great - they have some interesting tasty fish you can't find anywhere else (monkfish liver), and at good prices. No complaints about their picked or boxed foods. Fresh noodles are available and so are the usual Japanese cute packaged teas and soft drinks. Their deli selection is nice too, for the most part - but I'm sad that they stopped making brown rice bentos. Other than that, the bentos and heated items are solid and I really like the stuffed shrimp. The sushi...ehh, you get what you pay for. The maki has a bit too much rice, but other than that, it's decent. The nigiri sushi however tastes frozen and stale, I would skip it. The sashimi plates are pretty good, though. But the really nice thing about their deli section is that everything is 50% off the last hour. The secret's out and there's always a long line for it. However, there are still times where you can walk in at 4:15 and have a decent selection. It varies. Just skip the nigiri, but everything else is respectable. The only downside to this place (other than the nigiri) is that it closes hella early (5pm most days.)
google avatar

Yelp
Suruki Supermarket is a nice Japanese market where they have a seafood counter where you can order fresh seafood, like poke, or other things. The also have ready to heat up bentos, fresh sushi, musubi, etc. As well as, produce, products, and kitchenware. We picked up some spam furikake musubi and salmon musubi to snack on.

Yelp
Suruki is a popular Japanese market serving the Bay Area since 1974. They sell groceries, sashimi by the pound, and even bento boxes and hot meals. The packaged sushi, nigiri, and rice bowls are good when you're in a pinch. For the more prepared and particular, priced around $10+, you can even preorder your meal for pick up online days ahead.

Yelp
I love this market. Where do I even begin...I order boba a few stores down, come in here to get food or the usual essentials and by the time I check out my boba is ready and for me that's a win win. I love their chicken karaage, gyoza, their bento boxes and their expensive peanut butter mochi. We've been catering from here often, and the price point is amazing. Recently we got the chicken teriyaki for my daughter's bday party and it was a hit with all the kids. The workers here are nice, helpful and the place is clean.

Yelp
My family loves this supermarket. It always has amazing fresh sashimi and a bunch of other Japanese foods that are ready to eat! We usually get an onigiri and the toro sashimi. It can get busy so don't be surprised if there's a line, or all the food is gone when you come haha. Just enjoy the atmosphere inside and the fact that they carry a lot of stuff!! I hope this supermarket stays in the community forever!

Yelp
stopping by suruki is part of my wfh ritual, I feel so lucky to be so close to Suruki -- if you're in the bay, you're lucky to be close by too! was thinking about all the hot food, but landed on my classic salmon sashimi and unagi roll. getting into my matcha phase, so scored this ceremonial matcha on sale!! did a taste test and it was better (greener and more umami) than one that i got in tokyo picked up some of my favorite skincare products (cleansing oil, serum, and hair mask) it's like i'm back in donquijote but without the music check out line is in the aisles, and moves pretty fast depending on the rush. it's always super quick at the cashier for me

Yelp
Corner market in DT San Mateo, stopped by in the afternoon to check it out. Managed to find street parking right in front of the store. Lots of people browsing, shopping and even hanging out having conversations in the middle of the aisles. I was surprised in the amount of variety each aisle had, there was a little bit of everything. They even had an end cap full of hawaiian goodies. The staff was friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, most of the "ready made foods" were gone by the time I arrived, but for next time, it's best to come early in the day.

Yelp
Suruki Supermarket located in downtown San Mateo is a small Japanese supermarket that's bright well-stocked, well organized, clean and bustling hive of prepared foods to-go, grocery and pantry shopping! They have a good selection of hot and cold pre-packaged to-go foods like teriyakis, mushubis, sashimis, sushi and more. Perfect for a quick lunch or a no-cook dinner night. A fish counter in the back is not to be missed. You can gather your own choices of freshly cut fish for sashimi and sushi. Their grocery aisles of pantry items like teas, soy sauce, seasonings and spices, is heaven to roam through. Fresh Produce is neatly curated for your meal prepping needs. Don't forget the snack aisle! Staff is nice, you could spend more time wandering the aisles with the myriad of choices but strangely enough check out can be fairly quick with queues. Suruki Supermarket makes for an excellent staple of Asian food shopping. I'll be back!

Yelp
Cute market with a wide assortment of food to go. Picked up some onigiri and Hello Kitty Seaweed snacks. The liens were long but quick. The staff was very helpful and polite.

Yelp
Suruki-San, why can't you have another store in the east bay? On the other side of the San Mateo bridge so that it's closer to me. this place is my go-to for sashimi because the quality is as fresh as it can be and as close to Japan as it can be without actually flying there. Hot tip: order online for pick up and you will thank me for not needing to wait so long for your order. They get especially busy during holidays because everyone and their mommas tryna bring a sashimi platter to the parties. So order ahead! The inside can get really bustling. I remember during Covid, they were limiting number of people going in so there would be long ass lines outside the market. But nowadays, it hasn't been too bad. When you enter and go left, there's area of hot food quick grab snacks heaven. From bentos to onigiris to ready-made nigiri sets, you can choose! Also I hear if you go near closing time, the remaining ones have a big fat discount. I love ordering the real crab California roll to snack on for the drive back home before I get to inhale the sashimi for homemade hand rolls.

Yelp
Always amazing! Great selection of sushi and sashimi, seafood bowls. Their prices just amazing, comparing if your order them in a restaurant. And not only that but the sashimis are high quality too!

Yelp
What I ordered: -1/2 lb salmon -1/2 lb hamachi -1/2 lb akami -1/2 lb chutoro _ I recently visited Saruki Market to pick up a sashimi platter I had preordered online two days in advance. The pick-up process was seamless--they had everything ready at the front counter, making it incredibly convenient. I ordered 1/2 pound each of salmon, hamachi, akami, and chutoro, with the total coming to around $80. The quality of the fish was exceptional, making for a perfect takeout dinner to enjoy with my family. The market also carries a variety of Japanese grocery items, and the cozy atmosphere adds to its charm. I highly recommend visiting!

Yelp
If you're looking for something to bring to a potluck to impress your family this is the place. Ordered sashimi and sushi to a Father's Day gathering, everyone enjoyed the food especially the sashimi. That was the highlight of the food. It's beautifully displayed. Only issue we had was there was no soy sauce provided. Not sure if we needed to ask for it or they do not provide it. It was a little awkward asking the host to get a dish of soy sauce . If I knew I would bring some myself other than that it was yummy!

Yelp
I love coming to Suruki Supermarket to grab a sushi/sashimi bento box! Super convenient and they have pretty reasonable pricing. Some of my favorite items include the salmon ikura bowl, negitoro roll, mixed sashimi plate, spicy tuna roll, and unagi roll. All the fish is super fresh. Pro-tip: if you come an hour before closing you can grab a sushi/sashimi bento box for 50% off. I usually come half hour beforehand to wait in line (by 3:30pm). The choices may be slimmer pickings but sometimes it's a fun surprise.

Yelp
There's no line for grocery shopping. When there's a sale that's when people line up outside waiting to be let in. They sell everything you need to make sushi, shabu shabu, hot pot. Very convenient grab and go lunch or snack (spam musubi, onigiri triangle, sushi roll, bentos, curry rice, noodles etc). Cold drinks. Walk to the park to eat or there's benches outside

Yelp
After living in San Mateo for the past 3 years I finally have my work scheduled aligned so that I can make it to Suruki's! It was my first time in the store. There are sooo many wonderful options to choose from. I got the Sriracha Tuna Poke Bowl today and it tasted just like how I used to get them in Maui! The quality of the fish was truly INCREDIBLE. You really know what good tuna tastes like if you get yours from here. There are lots of really great deals for lunch, and the market itself carries a wide selection of Japanese products! It felt like I was back in a konbini :) I will highly recommend Suruki's to anyone who is in the area! Most of the reviews say that the line to get in is crazy 90% of the time, but today, I came in around noon and while there were quite a bit of people inside, it wasn't too hectic. I was able to take my time and select what I wanted without feeling rushed or overwhelmed. 10/10!

Yelp
Suruki Supermarket's selection of ready-made food rivals markets in Japan. The quality of the food is top notch for a great price, and the rest of the market has a great selection of items too; especially the sashimi selection! This is a perfect spot to grab food for a picnic in San Mateo's central park. For $15 each, my girlfriend and I were able to get plenty full; and might I add the flavours and execution were restaurant level. One thing to watch out for is competing with the hectic crowds at near lunch time (I swear everyone in town is trying to get their hands on a freshly made bento).

Yelp
Small Japanese market in the middle of downtown San Mateo. They carry the same merchandise as nijiya. What I particularly liked was that their to go shelves were packed. There is so much to choose from. Sushi. Bento and donbiri. All reasonably priced

Yelp
Came here for their 4pm 50% off special. You'll notice a line outside the market beforehand and I thought it was very organized how the employees orchestrated the sale. It was just a one way line through the food section and everything was delicious! I got a bunch of sashimi that were great quality and the rolls were spectacular as well. Perfect to satisfy your sushi cravings on a budget without compromising quality. I'll be back!

Yelp
Wide selection of bentos, sashimi, and rolls at this Japanese mart. It gets really busy here and I have seen this section get cleared quickly. The rice in their sushi rolls are very springy and sticky, almost a glue-like texture. Really odd. I do not recommend rolls here (reference: California roll w/ real crab $18 for 12 pieces). Their sashimi selection is decent and fish quality is pretty good as well. I had the tuna, scallop and ikura chirashi bowl, it comes with a lot of rice. They also sell Hokkaido uni here for $29.

Yelp
Clean, good pricing and known for their sashimi. We waited in line for the 50% discount sashimi around 3-330 (they start letting people in at 4). We were maybe 15th-20th person in line? They let people in groups of 5. Overall, we got some great quality sashimi at a decent pricing. Wish I lived in the area so I could get cheap sashimi eats more often. Overall, we paid $39

Yelp
First time here and got confused by the lines. I stood in line outside but didn't need to since I wanted to go to the fish counter. Ordered a tray of sashimi and the guy behind the counter was so nice and patient!! I wanted a set tray but asked if I could get what I wanted l. Gave him a set amount and how many people. 15-20 mins later, done!!! So fresh and my husband and his friends loved it. I've gone to other Japanese markets and had to cut the fish myself. This was better quality and almost the same price for a ready made platter. Definitely coming back!

Yelp
Great selection of sashimi and sushi. Really interesting looking sushi rolls I'll have to try next time. Got the hamachi and ahi sashimi as a quick snack. Great quality fish, so buttery! Highly recommend

Yelp
What an amazing marketplace!!! Every day sashimi is half off from 3:30pm. I also catered a lot of food for my birthday party, and spent $330ish for 20 people, but it probably could've fed 30. It is so, so worth it. Even though the store is small it does so much. Chicken & pork katsu: both good texture, not dry, comes with plenty of sauce on the side Chicken teriyaki: tender chicken, only complaint is sauce was already on, but actually that was probably easier for self serving Nishime: party platter was way too big we did not need that much, we will be eating this for days. Nishime takes a long time to cook and this was the best value item in my opinion Yakisoba: also a crazy value item, did not expect any meat to be in there but it comes with beef. So generous Tempura: not the most popular item but you gotta get some more veg for balance right! My family described it as 良心的, which means they provide generously and do good business.

Yelp
Great place for all your seafood needs. Got a sashimi bowl with plenty salmon and poke. Tastes fresh. Service is fast. Busy market and deli that's in downtown. Good place to stop to buy ingredients for hand rolls and then making your own at home at for a picnic nearby.

Yelp
If you're planning on making sushi at home, get your sashimi here! The fish is fresh and decently priced. Go up to the kiosk and take a ticket, the guys behind the counter are knowledgable and straight forward and give you the best. But be patient! I made sushi at home for Valentine's Day and we got salmon, tuna, hokkaido scallops, salmon roe and much more. This store is super cute and has everything you need, as well as fresh produce, sake and yummy snacks.

Yelp
Come for the bentos, stay for the groceries. This place has my vote for best area Japanese supermarket, especially for their lunch offerings. A wide selection of bento boxes that are very affordable ($10-15) as well as sashimi/sushi and veggie lunch and side dish offerings. Fantastic fish shop as well. The supermarket area is small but has most of the essentials. Pricing is affordable. It's not the rock bottom lowest price of the Santa Clara county supermarkets nor is it the largest. But they have the best lunch boxes by far. On street is metered street parking but usually available.
