"Sushi by Bae is a six-seat counter that originally started as a sister pop-up to Sushi by Bou in 2017. The omakase costs $125, and there are three seatings each evening (6:00 p.m., 7:30 p.m, and 9:00 p.m.). Come here for an accessible, casual vibe that seeks to make omakase accessible. Owner Oona Tempest — a U.S.-trained chef who stands out as a woman in a world that’s dominated by Japanese chefs who trained in Japan — is chatty and more than happy to answer highly technical questions about the service." - Lorelei Yang

Pretty darn good and the first few bites the sushi rice was excellent. However, it seemed to have cooled down towards the last 4 bites. I think all the sushi served including the hand-roll at the end was great except for the Korean Fluke, which was a bit too chewy for me (or sinewy). The two pieces that stood out was the first one, the striped bass, which was torched and had a smokey taste to it, superb. The other piece that made an impact I can't remember the fish, but it's part of the sardine family and there's was a gelatin layer over it (picture #9), also superb (the rice was best from the first piece). I think that fish would have been great if it was prepared another way (marinated or frozen and thawed) or massaged, something to create a better texture. All-in-all, I'm not 100% sure it was worth the price, but it absolutely is worth the experience. Again, the sushi rice was done really well, so give it a go.

Oona is, hands down, one of the most amazingly talented sushi chefs ever. Her creative approach, paired with the quality of the fish is unparalleled. She takes the time to pickle her own ginger and grind her own wasabi and she explains each course with love. If you want an unforgettable culinary experience, eat here. Plus the intimate atmosphere and attentive staff make this a truly special experience. The sake flight was paired perfectly with the food too! Reservations only and only parties up to 6 people.

Chef Oona loves sushi. She does a great job explaining the ingredients and her approach to flavors is thoughtful and clearly done with care. Would definitely recommend. Best seats in the house are right in front of her!

Really great omakase sushi for a great price. Both chefs there are great and interactive. They take the time to make sure you enjoy and understand the sushi. The venue is fun and intimate and way less pretentious than the flatiron location. Reservation were easy and the host and bartender were welcoming and attentive. We will definitely be back and are excited to have such a great restaurant in our neighborhood.

One of the best omakase sushi values in the city: $110 for 15 perfectly crafted pieces served at the perfect pace. Menu changes based on the season and market availability. Oona Tempest is a wonder and a perfect host - it feels less like a restaurant and more like you're joining her in her apartment for an intimate dinner party. Just brilliant.

What an amazing sushi restaurant! As soon as I walked in, I was amazed by the decor and design and then blown away by the food. Oona Tempest has done it again! Her understanding of her craft has definitely taken her to the next level. I strongly recommend this sushi-ya to anyone who is looking for truly authentic sushi.
