LA’s Food Experts Discuss Their Best Restaurant Meals of 2024 | Eater LA

"Hadley Tomicki described an omakase: "An especially tough call this year, but the omakase at [this spot] at the SLS Hotel was a singularly memorable night out from beginning to end. It showcases so many novel preparations of sushi, while never drawing attention away from the natural flavors of the fish, which was among the best I’ve ever had. The atmosphere was spellbinding, and everyone working there was so warm and cool." (Quote preserved with the restaurant name redacted.)" - Eater Staff

Gov. Newsom Approves 4 a.m. Last Call for a VIP Area Inside Intuit Dome | Eater LA

"I’m excited that chef Phillip Frankland Lee is returning to Los Angeles for a three-month residency of Sushi by Scratch at the SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills, where his signature LA-inspired omakase—marked by ample butane-flame technique and thoughtfully sourced fish—will be offered for $185 at 5 p.m., 7:15 p.m., and 9:30 p.m. beginning October 2. The concept, which has nearly a dozen locations nationwide and recently made a splash with a New York residency, continues Lee’s trajectory after he and his wife opened the original Scratch Bar (now the space for Kazan Beverly Hills)." - Matthew Kang

Omakase Restaurant Sushi by Scratch Opens Desserts Store Wolf and Wheat | Eater Austin

"A California-born omakase concept founded by a chef couple who began with a Beverly Hills restaurant in 2013, it expanded into Los Angeles and later Austin (first as a pop-up that became permanent), then grew into multiple locations including outposts in Montreal, Miami, Seattle, and Chicago as well as an omakase spot at a resort in Cedar Creek. The founders also opened Pasta|Bar in Los Angeles (which earned and retains a Michelin star) and have operated other ventures such as a casual burger stand; they reorganized their brands under a single restaurant group and relocated some operations to support expansion and new projects." - Nadia Chaudhury

My mouth waters when I think back on our exquisite dining experience last night at Sushi by Scratch. It really left NOTHING to be desired. From the service to the atmosphere to the food to the drinks. It's worth every penny that we paid. And a big shout out to our host Max.....his knowledge of his mixologist craft really added to our experience.

The overall experience was amazing! Their omakase isn’t your typical traditional style—it’s modern and contemporary, offering a fresh and innovative take on sushi. Every bite brought new and unique flavors, completely unlike the traditional sushi I’ve had before. Each piece was topped with a different sauce or garnish, all of which carried a distinctive and refreshing aroma. I’ve dined at many sushi places, but I’ve never encountered such a unique flavor profile and attention to detail. This wasn’t just about the food—it was also a fantastic experience. Highly recommended!✅✅✅✅✅✅✅

Easily the best dinner I’ve ever had. Chef Sebastian and the host Max made it an absolute pleasurable experience. The bartender and sous chef also worked perfectly together. All in all, each employee made sure the guests were having the best time as possible and my group was all for it. Will be visiting again! What a hidden gem.

The atmosphere is much more casual than many high end sushi places making it perfect for talkative groups. Several of the courses were phenomenal while a few fell a bit short. The golden snapper was one of the best I've had. The uni was great. A few had too much sauce like the wagyu course which ended up drowning the taste of the meat with a large portion of salty gochujung. I'm normally a sauce person but slightly less sauce on a few courses would have been perfect.

I've been to several of the Michelin-starred sushi restaurants in the LA area (Sushi Ginza, Nozawa Bar), and this place not only holds its own with them, but in many ways *surpasses* them both in terms of the quality of the dishes and the overall experience. Among other things, this menu is much more *flavorful* than the dishes you get at other Omakase places, showing more creativity in preparation and use of ingredients. The staff also does a great job of livening up the atmosphere while you're enjoying your dishes. Our favorite dishes were the Toro and the Wagyu, but all of them were amazing (though remember to substitute the Uni if you don't like Uni!). Thoroughly enjoyed it, and highly recommend it!

Google
Fusion-ish sushi. If you want good traditional omakase this isn’t it. It is an “experience” though. For me it was just a bit too much, felt they tried to layer in too many flavors on each piece. Great service throughout starting with the cocktail/appetizer outside and then the dining room is traditional counter style with 10 chairs. There were 3 “chefs” plus a bartender behind the counter. The fish/seafood choices were solid but the rice was just ok. It was fun trying once with a few friends but my personal taste leans towards a more traditional style where the sushi isn’t so sauced up.

This was one in a lifetime experience. Walking into the special enormous room at the hotel... the incredible view took my breath away. I was shocked by the greeter as she called me by name and escorted me to a bar where I got to try the welcome drink which was refreshing and tasteful. I enjoyed how the chef and team made this personal and told stories about each piece of sushi they created. I enjoyed every single piece of it and to my surprised I was satisfied but never felt like I feel each time I go to other sushi restaurants (feeling blowed or like passing out after eating so much rice). The way they prepare the rice is not as sticky thus you are supposed to eat it with your hands. But they provide a wet towel for you to clean your hands constantly. The bartender was next level and I really enjoyed how attentive he was to what I wanted. I also enjoye the personal connection with other people in the 10 member group who was there that evening. What I really enjoyed was seeing my name written correctly and spelled as I spell my name next to each personalized bite.

Yelp
So let me set up the vibe of this review by letting you know what an amazing experience it is to go to a Sushi by Scratch location. I have gone to the "original" location in my head which is on Ventura Boulevard in Los Angeles, California. I was hesitant to go to the location in Beverly Hills at the SLS hotel because I just felt more familiar obviously with the location I had been to before. Let me let you guys know that if you have thought... please get out in your mind, you should 100% discard it. Max the bartender absolutely amazing. Victor the head chef absolutely amazing. JD as well absolutely amazing. The other chef whose name I didn't get was absolutely amazing. Our amazing hostess, who I forget her name was absolutely amazing. Every time I go to a Sushi by Scratch location I feel greeted with the best hospitality and comfort. Like you can't have a bad time there because the energy is so good and the food is so good that there's no way you leave not having a positive experience and one of the best meals in your life. I'm so glad that they have a location more on the west side now so I cannot have to drive to the valley to get tasty bites of sushi. And I'm so excited to share this with more friends and people. After trying out his new location it's for sure gonna be a spot I come back to you repeatedly. Super glad that it's close. Only downside for sure is that SLS does not validate parking. But that didn't matter for me because I got a sake pairing and Ubered anyways. But I definitely went to let people know that but besides that you can't go wrong here.

Yelp
$1200 for two people including drinks and truffle/caviar topping is not worth it! Considering the truffle was out of season and had no taste which even the chef agreed it was no good. There were maybe 3 or 4 good bites but the rest are just the normal sushi with better toppings. I've had much better sushi at the fraction of their price.

Yelp
Blown away by this omakase experience with a speakeasy exclusive feel. It's a 10-seater table and the guests dine together intimately at the chefs table along with two other chefs and a bartender. We were greeted with a friendly face to get comfortable before entering the room. I was so excited to try all the sushi prepared right in front of us. It's a 17-course meal and that was more than enough because I think I made it to #10 before I started removing the sushi rice and just eating the protein lol. Every bite was unique and mouthwatering. I was very impressed with the varying flavors and the sake that paired with each individual sushi! It was overflowing with delicious sake and It got me feeling very warm and fuzzy. I was stuffed to my core and also so happy. Definitely will do this again soon

Yelp
I was honored to have this incredible dining experience at Sushi by Scratch inside SLS hotel in Beverly Hills with a group of 10 people. We began the evening with a welcome drink and hot towel in a separate 'waiting' area, which was a nice time to mingle with our group and get excited for the evening. Next, we were escorted to the private dining area, which included a sushi-counter-esque set up where our four servers/chefs awaited for our arrival. We had assigned seating, which I haven't had in a dining experience outside of weddings, so I was pleasantly surprised. As we all settled in our seats, we were then introduced to the 17 omakase items that will be enjoyed this evening with an overview of each piece. The food items were also listed on the back wall, which made it easier to follow along. The experience also came with an optional beverage pairing, of either Japanese whiskey, sake, or mixture of Japanese cocktails/sake. I opted for the sake, which honestly, all pretty much tasted the same. If I were to do it differently, I'd opt in for the cocktails/sake combo. Every bite of this delicious meal was like enjoying a piece of art. Not only did it look beautiful, but the flavors of each fish that was enhanced with a touch of another flavor, such as yuzu or wasabi or another topping I couldn't identify, was impeccable. Granted, I've had a lot of sushi in my life that left me mouth-watering for more, and that's how I felt when my 17 courses concluded. The ONLY thing I would ask to do differently is to slow it down a bit... I usually like to savior good food and take it slow, so this experience felt a bit rushed and it was over in just 60mins. I also had to drink the sake relatively quickly to keep up with the pairing, so that wasn't ideal. The server/ chefs were very attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable. I found it a great 'dinner and a show' as we watched them cut the next pieces of fish as we ate our previous pieces. Overall, this was a wonderful, unique experience and I'd recommend it to anyone who is looking for a rather special sushi meal / experience.

Yelp
One of the best omakase experiences I have ever had. I love that each piece is made differently with so many flavors. The chefs were so fun - it was like having a dinner with a show. Loved the intimate 10 seat setting and that you do not use any utensils or dipping sauces. When booking the reservation you can opt to come 30 minutes early for some pre dinner drinks and appetizers.

Yelp
My sister took me here for omakase for my birthday and it was such a great experience! The service was impeccable right when we arrived- they knew our names, said happy birthday and we got welcome drinks and apps before we entered the bar, which had a speakeasy vibe. Chefs and bartender were very friendly and knowledgeable definitely made the experience. 16 pieces of sushi and dessert at the end. Was more than enough food and would come back for a special occasion! Only annoying thing is parking is covered and need to park valet.

Yelp
Sushi by Scratch was one of the first high-end Omakase I've ever been to, and we had to drive to Encino to have it. Luckily they opened up a pop-up in Beverly Hills, and I believe they're going to be a more permanent fixture. And although I think the ambiance of of Encino is leagues better than the location in the SLS hotel, the Beverly Hills location did not disappoint in service, quality of food, and and overall great experience. Everything is pretty much set up the same way. There are 3 times with 10 people slots. Get there 30 minutes earlier for A Cocktail and Canapé. They had a yuzu drink last time I loved. The one we had was decent though. The Chawamushi was very good, though I wish there was a bit more of the custard because the flavors of the toppings were so vibrant that it overshadowed what would be a great texture balance Front of house was great, and all the Chefs were awesome. Great skill in cutting, great presentation, and great overall rapport with the guests. The drink specialist was great at his job as well. They definitely chose right when hiring these guys. Overall, its an experience anyone/everyone who loves sushi should enjoy. If you've never had Omakase , this is a great way to jump on board and pop that cherry. Parking is $20 with validation. Valet only.

Yelp
5 stars as promised! This place needs more reviews... or maybe not because reservations will be harder to get lol. 6/5 stars all around. Sushi was VERY unique and quality was a5 like the wagyu. Ive honestly never had the combination of flavors that they crafted. Dont want to get into detail to ruin the surprise for you all. i eat omakase regularly and barely write reviews but i gotta give credit where its due. Thank you John and the team. Will definitely be back

Yelp
I'm still buzzing about my night at Sushi by Scratch last week! Walking into that tiny, intimate space (seriously, just 10-12 seats!) felt like stumbling into some secret dinner party. The vibe was so chill yet somehow special at the same time. Our host absolutely made the night - not just knowledgeable but genuinely fun to chat with throughout the meal. And the sushi? Mind-blowing. You can literally see the care going into each piece, and the flavor combinations are unlike anything I've had before. The three hours we spent there honestly vanished in a flash - you know a meal is good when you're sad it's ending! If you're looking for a sushi experience that feels personal and genuinely memorable, this place is it.

Yelp
Scratch is the #1 best omakase dining experience hands down. For the price it's top notch. The level of detail is amazing. This is my go to for omakase. My 13yr old will only eat sushi from scratch now. Chef Willer is the best and can't wait to visit him in Napa.

Yelp
Amazing team! Great service. Top notch experience... every bite has a different flavor It's not just plain Jane overly traditional boring fish It's fun and yummy Will not disappoint

Yelp
I would love to go back again. The hospitality and intimate setting were something else. We went for my fiancé's birthday and had an incredible time! They allowed you to order an additional 2-3 fishes at the very end, but it's so hard to pick just a few after a 17-course dinner. I'd want to do the sake pairing next time, but it's definitely worth visiting especially for a special occassion!
