"Sushi Daizen offers residents of Long Island City, Queens a chance to enjoy some excellently prepared fish. The takeout menu is limited to a chef’s assortment of nigiri, a chirashi bowl, and a crowd-pleasing uni + ikura + toro bowl but the fish is sure to be fresh and seasoned appropriately." - The MICHELIN Guide

"The casual Sushi Daizen is one of the few places in the Long Island City area offering omakase. It comes at two price points: $75 for a three-dish appetizer, soup, 10 pieces of nigiri, and a handroll, or a $90 option with both sushi and sashimi. Menu highlights include a spot shrimp, Santa Barbara sea urchin, kawa kawa from Japan, and a fatty tuna hand roll studded with scallions, though menu items vary by season. There are 10 seats at the counter for omakase, as well as four smaller tables and one larger in the dining area seating an additional 20 or so diners." - Lorelei Yang

My friend and I visited on Tuesday evening for omakase. It was definitely one of the best sushi I had in town. Everything was very fresh. We sat by the bar and saw the chef making the sushi in front of us. The restaurant was very small and had very few seats, so it was very quiet and allowed me to focus on the food more and to have some quiet time with friend.

Google
I've become a regular here. The staff knows me by name and the chef remembers my hobbies and travels. I'm always pleased to find Japanese speaking patrons sitting at the sushi bar with me assuring me that this is the real deal. This is often the last place I go before leaving for a long trip and first place I visit when I return. Always the Sushi & Sashimi Omakase.

Google
Really great experience for a decent price! They had sushi omakase for $75 per person and sushi+sashimi omakase for $90 per person. Fish is imported from Japan's fish market. The sushi chefs were polite and informative if you talk to them about the food.

Google
This was one of the tastiest sushi experiences I've ever had. The quality of the sushi is on par with Nobu. The experience is also very authentic. The restaurant is small and cozy. The service was very traditional. If you aren't on a budget and want a super authentic experience outside of Japan, this is the place to go.

Google
2019.03 not a big Japanese sushi restaurant. It sells omakase, expensive and not really worth it. At least not tonight, most special fish sold out already, and left many common fish. Still fresh and nice sushi chef. Cozy and relax... Only hv time for sashimi pic, sushi into my mouth right the way. The appetizer is excellent

Google
As an Asian and a big fan of Japanese food, I somehow feel disappointed with the food here. Not bad just mediocre but I got high expectation since it is recommended by Michelin. I am not used to have nigiri with hot rice. The seafood there is just okay. Uni is fantastic though. The table service and the chef are really nice and professional at least.

Google
First omakase experience. Was the most delicious, memorable meal! Has a standing chalkboard tent outside with the prices and sushi info to draw in people walking by but it appears you need reservations to sit at the bar. There is a sushi bar area that seats 8. Two sushi chefs. Each party had the same dishes, but timing was staggered based on when you sat down. Fish broth soup Appetizer 5 sashimi 7 sushi 1 hand roll $90 I think they missed one sushi for us since I took pictures before eating each one and don’t remember the 7th one. Nice blend of flavors. The fish was the freshest, tastiest, melt in your mouth. Expertly arranged. Was a Filling meal. Nice ice cream flavor options (lychee, black sesame) for dessert. Would come back. Would recommend.

Google
Great omakase at a quiet and cozy place. The only place I've been that serves barracuda! Edit (after 3 years): Visited Sushi Daizen 3 years after my initial review. Definitely quality omakase for the price. The best and only place on Vernon Blvd, LIC that I would trust to get an omakase from.

Yelp
Delicious food! Came here on a weeknight, make sure to make a reservation! We were seated promptly after arriving! Perfect for a casual meal, date night or a celebratory meal! Food is very fresh! Price is reasonable for that quality of freshness! If you like omakase experiences, definitely give this place a try! We will definitely be back! Thanks!

Yelp
Service was very friendly and attentive here at kaiyo. My friend made a reservation for us to celebrate my belated birthday. We opted for the 15 courses at $98. Every bite was so good! I don't usually like ikura but it was not fishy at all and complimented many of the pieces well. The dessert at the end was a choice between yuzu or chocolate cake or ice cream. We both chose a slice of wah but the chocolate cake was frozen. Literally see the ice on the slice. The Kaiyo team also gave me a handwritten birthday card which I thought was super sweet since I love cards! Chef also gave us an extra piece on the house.

Yelp
Decided to give this omakase place a try since it's fairly new in LIC. There are two omakase options: 18 course for $118 and 15 course for $98. To be honest, I have tried at least 12 different omakase spots in nyc and I have to say, this is not the best. The fish are not too fresh. Almost every other piece, the chef smears soy sauce and snuck wasabi inside the rice to mask it. Each piece was very flat. Did not give me the WOW factor. In addition, start time is not the same for each party. People come and go at different times. Takes away the whole omakase experience of all starting together enjoying the same piece. When a party comes after, we will have to wait for them to be served, which you can anticipate dinner can be longer. Chefs are very quiet. They just tell you the piece they're serving. I'm okay with that. I am just letting you know in case you're looking for a different experience. Desserts were two options: mocha cake and ice cream sandwich. We wanted the ice cream sandwich. They said their ice cream machine stopped working. Bummer.

Yelp
Kaiyo is great and affordable for an omakase. I got 18 pieces for $115, which includes dessert. If you have any allergies, the chef can accommodate you accordingly. The waitress was attentive, she refilled our water and asked us if we wanted more pieces, were ready for dessert, etc. The chef briefly explains each piece as he serves you. Each piece was delicious, some pieces definitely had a kick to it. The place is overall small and if you sit by the door, you might get cold. The only thing I did not like was the dessert, it's a small piece of an ice cream sandwich. The dessert could have definitely been elevated.

Yelp
Came in with a group of 5. We made a reservation for early sitting. We were greeted with friendly staff and warm tea. Had an exceptional omakase experience. The restaurant itself projects a modern and cozy vibe. We opted for an 18 course meal ($118). Ask for house sake, it's on the house! Every single piece of sushi was carefully and beautifully crafted. Each piece was unique and absolutely delightful (& delicious). The chef was generous with each cut and the fish were super fresh! Definitely recommend others to try this spot!

Chase E.

Yelp
Kaiyo is hands down the best omakase I have ever had. The service is impeccable and every single piece has so much flavor and melts in your mouth. This is my favorite restaurant I have ever been to. If you have not been here, you must go and try it and I promise you will not be disappointed. Sit around the bar as well to watch the talent at work. Any review less than 5 stars is completely inaccurate. The price is completely fitting for what you receive. If I could give Kaiyo ten stars, I would.

Yelp
We came here on a Friday night with a reservation. We had 18-course omakase and it was a little disappointing. The fish didn't seem to be fresh. I found a fishbone in one of the courses. Luckily it didn't get stuck in my throat but it was a bit shocking as I've never seen a fishbone at any other omakase before. The service was also subpar. Something fell off when the chef put a piece on the plate, but he didn't fix it as if it didn't happen. Another time when he put a piece on the plate, something fell off even further to our counter, and he didn't apologize. Overall, I would not recommend this restaurant. There are a lot of omakase with better quality and service in the city.

Jing K.

Yelp
Great low key vibe omakase spot in Long Island City. $118 for 18 courses is a great deal. The pieces were large, well cut, super fresh and tender. Highly recommended for a nice night out.

Matt S.

Yelp
Came here on a Friday night and it was very easy to secure a last minute reservation for 3 people. There's typical seating at the bar but there are also two private tables for 2 and one private table for 4 in the back that can reserved by calling. The service was great and the sushi was all very delicious. We opted for the 18-course meal which runs $118 per person (the 15-course is $98 pp) and had a couple Sapporo beers at $7 each. Overall, I really enjoyed the omakase experience at Kaiyo and would definitely try again.

Neal S.

Yelp
The food was delicious. The fish just melted in our mouths. The service was impeccable. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Walked by Kaiyo on Vernon Boulevard and a restaurant dedicated purely to an Omakase experience had me curious. I booked with a friend and while she initially intended to go a la carte, she quickly realized that she'd be extremely envious as she saw the first courses heading to the folks near us at the table. The experience was intimate, with seating for about 10-12 in front of the chefs, but with tables in the back as well for a la carte dining. We were seated next to friendly folks so instantly had a fun connection during dinner and the staff was extremely attentive and professional throughout. The seafood was unbelievably fresh and delicious. My personal favorites were the O'Toro and the King Salmon but the Nigiri was up there as were all the tuna options. In short - all SO GOOD. Topped off with dessert, our 15 and 18 course omakase experience at Kaiyo was well worth it and had us content and happy. Super high quality and so grateful its in the LIC neighborhood! DEFINITELY recommended.

James N.

Yelp
Okay. Be prepared for a bit of sticker shock, but you aren't paying for just your standard sushi dinner, you are paying for the experience of watching them prepare your dinner. Sit at the bar not in a table. Or was well worth it ... would I go again? Yes! Soon? Maybe not. But for an anniversary, first date, or I love you dinner, yes.

Meng Z.

Yelp
This was my very first omakase experience and it was overall pretty good. The fish ingredients were all really fresh and tasty. Some pieces like the wagyu one, came with some fish liver slice on top which was unique. The staff is really attentive and they will ask if you want a refill of your sake or water/tea when you are finished. I normally don't like sake but the sake they have here goes down really smooth. Overall the service is excellent and it's a solid spot to check out for omakase if you're in the LIC area!

Jessica L.

Yelp
Came here for a girls night dinner. Quiet ambiance. Service is good. They have sake that comes with the course. Every piece was very good. Highly recommend. I would have given it a 5 star if I didn't get gassy eating during the course. Great flavors but not sure why my stomach got a little upset. But that's okay besides the gas.

Grace W.

Yelp
This location used to be Sushi Daizen. The interior hasn't changed much with simple decor, and quiet ambiance. In my opinion, this new establishment is better. Very attentive service and pretty decent omakase at their price point, my friend and I went for 18 course $118 option. The pieces are in good cuts and fresh with more varieties. I chatted w/ their manager during my visit, he indicated that they get shipments almost everyday and source the fishes overseas and locally. I also want to point out that they have ankimo(monkfish liver) if you are a fan like I am!!! The chef seared it and pair it on top of wagyu beef that night, but you can order that a la cart as well. Other standout pieces were otoro, albacore, Hokkaido uni and king salmon. Not to mention the otoro temaki at the end.

Ashley N.

Yelp
Service is great but the quality of food is mediocre. Salmon hand roll at the end of the course instead of otoro hand roll (which would be the case at many other omakase spots). Shari is a bit dense and flavorless. I had high hopes for a new omakase spot in LIC but I left a bit let down. But the potential is there and it is a perfect first time omakase spot.

Yuqing L.

Yelp
The best omakase place in LIC area with the freshest and premium ingredients that I have ever tried. The atmosphere was warm and friendly. You won't how great it is until you try it. Anyway, highly recommend!!!

Anna Z.

Yelp
It was my first omakase experience and I got the 15 course. Was a small space but very intimate. The servers are very attentive and constantly checked in with us.I enjoyed all courses but the otoro really stood out.

Lindsay M.

Yelp
Great service, calm relaxing atmosphere, intimate size, and omakase was high quality. Some of the best toro I've had in awhile! The courses are generous and very competitively priced. Looking forward to going repeatedly!

M W.

Yelp
Such a gem in the heart of LIC! The shop itself was hard to find at first but once you do, be ready for an indulging omakase experience with impeccable presentations. The seafood was so fresh and delicious. The service was also top notch as the servers paid great attention to details. The cozy ambiance enhances the culinary journey, making it a must-visit.

Macy G.

Yelp
We had the entire restaurant to ourselves on a Thursday evening! The fish was fresh, the restaurant was clean, love the decor, and we received really attentive service. Not a price point for every day, obviously, but really hope this restaurant gets more visitors!

Lena R.

Yelp
Phenomenal experience. The food was amazing and we truly felt like we were sitting in front of a maestro who was doing his magic in front of our eyes! Service was outstanding!

Jelena D.

Yelp
Definely overpriced. Also, we were charged $50 for sake, and I read here that is free. That brought our bill to $300 which is not worh it at all!

Dillon G.

Yelp
Get in here asap before it's too hard to get a table. We were so excited to find out an omakase spot had finally opened up in LIC, so we didn't have to go into Manhattan for this experience. We saw online they were doing a soft opening and booked a rez a few hours later. The food and the service were both A+. Ambiance was great. It wasn't much cheaper than any of the other omakase places in Manhattan but the pieces they serve were very high quality so you're getting more bang for your buck. This is a fantastic new addition to the neighborhood!

Matthew C.

Yelp
Great omakase with a warm, inviting atmosphere. We dined here during Kaiyo's soft opening, and we were very impressed with the quality of the food and the staff's hospitality. The otoro, unagi, and wagyu with uni were standouts. Really enjoyed the homemade dessert, as well.

Kelly Y.

Yelp
Best omakase experience, The rice is perfect and the fish taste extremely fresh. Chef was so friendly and service was impeccable! The quality of the fish and presentation were both sublime! Every dish was served like an art piece, they were creative, delicious, and beautiful to look at, almost too pretty to eat. Highly recommended.

Amanda L.

Yelp
Incredible experience. Been to Kaiyo twice since their opening. Both experiences have been phenomenal, leaving me both satisfied and impressed. Both times we got the 18 course menu option - highly recommend! We have also tried some specialty add-ons (first one being a salmon special w quail egg and toro, second being an octopus special) I am allergic to gluten, and they were able to be accommodating! The service is top-tier!! Will be returning soon

Ashley C.

Yelp
We went here for a special occasion last night and had a wonderful time! The fish was absolutely amazing - so fresh and with really interesting accompaniments in some cases, like sea grapes. The chef was a master and the service was great. We loved the complimentary sake but also tried some of the beers and a sparkling sake. I really hope more people check out this spot so it has plenty of business! Really reasonable prices for how much food you get - so nice to have an omakase spot like this in the neighborhood!

Grace M.

Yelp
Super cute omakase spot in LIC! The omakase was a really good deal, and the slices of fish were thick and generous. My group had out-of-town visitors who were highly impressed. The flavors were great and well executed, and they're also serving free house sake. Service was attentive and kind. Highly recommend for a nice meal out!

Katie K.

Yelp
After doing plenty of research on NYC omakase places, I went here for my partners birthday and it was such a great choice! The food was some of the best I've ever had, the ambiance was relaxed, and the staff were very knowledgeable and friendly. The staff even signed a birthday card at the end. Very glad we went to Kaiyo and would definitely come again!

Victoria L.

Yelp
Came here for my birthday dinner and it was such a great experience. The Omakase was excellent!!! Where can you get an 18 course Omakase for $118?! And the service was attentive and professional. They even wrote me a personal birthday card, it was a nice touch. I'm still thinking about the wagyu beef with uni and monkfish liver, yummmmmmm

Stephen A.

Yelp
By far one of the best dining experiences I have ever had. Everything from the service, to the quality ingredients, to the chefs who create works of art made Kaiyo a next level experience. i will surely be back.

Eric W.

Yelp
Just recently discovered this Omakase in LIC! I must say it was an exceptional experience. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming. It is the perfect place to gather with your friends after work or go on a date with your partner! I was surprised by the high-quality dishes at such reasonable prices. Every aspect of the meal was just PERFECT. I'd definitely come back again

Tiffany K.

Yelp
I've never had more attentive service anywhere, the omakase experience was great and the price is completely doable. Great ambiance as well.

Rahul K.

Yelp
had the best omakase experience with a group of friends. their Hokkaido uni is the best of all so creamy and sweet. must try this place

Jonathan J.

Yelp
This place is on Vernon BLVD which over the past several years has really come to life. The facade is relatively nondescript and small which belies the amount of space on the interior which stretches quite a ways back from the road allowing them to accommodate a health amount of patrons and even seat groups while maintaining an intimate feel. You are immediately greeted by staff upon entering. The staff themselves were all very friendly and willing to engage as much or as little as each diner desired. Pricing is average for an omakase experience. The food was excellent with all offerings appearing, smelling, and tasting fresh. Each offering presented was distinct providing a roller coaster of flavor making the experience memorable. The visual presentation was average with great care given to the construction of each presentation but, often lacking in colour and other aspects that have become common resulting in a beautiful work of art but, not adding anything to flavour. Personally, I most enjoyed the oyster, otoro, unagi, and Hokkaido uni (the perfect combination of sweetness and creaminess) the most. So, I wouldn't hold that against them. I give it a 5 because 4.5 is unavailable and a 4 would be too low given the quality of the offerings. It would be a solid 5 if the presentation were a little better. Eat at Joe's if you want a bowl of chili. Eat at Kaiyo if you want some bangin' omakase.
