The 38 Best Restaurants in Honolulu, Hawai‘i | Eater

"The best of Honolulu’s recent omakase boom, Sushi Gyoshin is a sliver of a space with just eight seats at the counter, so you’ll need to book way in advance or hope for a last-minute cancellation. Hiroshi Tsuji combines kaiseki with omakase sushi, opening with a series of appetizers like his signature monaka (usually sweet wafers stuffed with red bean paste but here presented with seafood). For his sushi, Tsuji blends three vinegars and two types of rice, and he definitely doesn’t skimp with the seafood, which has included kinmedai from the Chiba prefecture and mirugai from Seattle. Know before you go: Gyoshin is BYOB — stop by the Sake Shop, about a five minute drive away, on your way to dinner." - Martha Cheng

A seven-to-eight seat BYOB counter that debuted in 2024 and quickly drew attention from Honolulu Magazine. Chef Hiroshi Tsuji’s omakase focuses on restraint, seasonality, and superb sourcing from Hawai‘i and Japan.

Small, friendly, and clean establishment. I enjoyed the dishes which were fresh and tasting including the yuzu cheesecake. It's BYOB. Reservation only and well in advance. Street parking or a lot in the back. Valet available On the weekends.

Perhaps my new favorite sushi restaurant in Honolulu! The chef is amazing, friendly, talented and creative. The flavor combinations were a superb. The courses were not only delicious, but artfully and meticulously presented. I had a taste of all my favorites and more with the omakase. I did not have to order additional items which happens so often at other places. We can't wait to visit again on our next visit to Oahu.

Google
A truly incredible experience. The chef and his assistant are wonderful. Come prepared to relax and enjoy. It will be at least two hours of dining and you will get full. Most of the menu is true traditional Sashimi with some cooked items like Eel, abalone and salmon. The rest is raw, glazed or torched. Amazing creative foods. You will need a reservation at least 2 months in advance. THE BEST.!!!! Mike from Colorado.

Google
What an absolutely wonderful experience! We waited over a month for this dinner and it was 100% worth it!!! Chef Hiroshi's skills and creativity are tops and so is his personality! 🫶 And the fact that Sushi Gyoshin is BYOB makes it even more fantastic! We were wowed by every single dish! 👏 Chef really puts thought, care and love into each item ❤️ We can't wait to go back but heard that rezzies are booked out for several months! 😭

Google
Sushi Gyoshin is just stuff of legendary in Oahu, Hawaii. This is one of the most authentic powerful restaurant I have ever dined outside of Japan. Chef Hiroshi has the skills, gesture, etiquette, strength and flexibility that makes him just the ultimate chef. I would say his skills are absolutely incredible not just in sushi but just in cuisine in general. The ingredients he uses for the price of his Omakase is just out of the league. He uses female snow crabs and Kuruma ebi with caviar. I mean each female snow crabs cost over $100+ dollars, each Kuruma ebi can cost from $40-60. I mean its just incredible what he does and how he executes them. It really reminds me of eating at Michelin star Sushiya in Japan but it ends up easily being in the price figure of $400-500 USD. I think this is one of the best Sushi restaurant not just in Hawaii but in the U.S. I will make more reservation and will try to dine here as much as possible knowing how awesome this place is.

Google
Best omakase so far. Fish was very fresh and chef Tsuji has made his food into a piece of art. Our favorites were the miso butterfish and the truffle toro. We will definitely come back.

Google
Just wow! Whoever is looking for omakase won't be disappointed!

Google
A great Honolulu Omakase sushi experience with fresh ingredients in a comfortable atmosphere. Tsuji San is very friendly and seems naturally good at omakase. BYOB, drinkware is available and no fee. there are 2 parking stalls in the back. There is a bathroom inside

Yelp
Loved the omakase experience at Sushi Gyoshin, among the best I've had anywhere in the world. A hidden gem located in a small storefront with only 8 seats, it's not easy to score a seat at Chef Tsuji's counter. In fact, I had given up hope on getting a rez, but got lucky when a slot popped up on Opentable at midnight a few days prior. (Normally their Opentable waitlist is 4+ months with zero cancellations, so it's best to book early). The 15 courses were beautiful to look at - but more importantly, uniformly scrumptious. I didn't take notes on all of the food - too busy eating - but the toro with gold leaf/caviar and ikura/blue crab dishes stood out. Omakase can be a quiet somber experience, but not so at Gyoshin where I was seated with a group of friendly welcoming locals. Reasonable pricing and BYOB made the experience even better. Normally dessert is not a major component of omakase(s) I've had elsewhere, but Chef Tsuji's incredibly light, moist yuzu cheesecake was a star in its own right. Thank you Sushi Gyoshin and Chef Tsuji for granting me a seat at your counter!

Yelp
you must check out their remarkable 15-course omakase! This dining experience is truly a feast for the senses, featuring an intimate seating arrangement at the counter, where you can fully immerse yourself in the artistry of the chefs. They offer two seatings in the evening. Every dish was a delight, but a few stood out as exceptional highlights. The otoro paired with uni was simply delicious, melting in your mouth with its rich flavors. The nodoguro was another standout, showcasing the chef's skill in preparing this delicate fish to perfection. Additionally, the blue crab and ikura donburi offered a wonderful combination of textures and tastes that left me craving more. The staff here are incredibly friendly and attentive, enhancing the overall dining experience with their warm hospitality. However, be aware that reservations can be challenging to secure due to the restaurant's popularity, so it's wise to plan ahead.

Yelp
Sushi Gyoshin offers a 15-course omakase, which also includes dessert. Reservations are required, and I highly recommend in trying to obtain a central seating so that you can enjoy your experience even more. Highlights included their housemade pickled ginger, the uni caviar toro monaka sandwich, the sakura nigiri, and the escargot butter. Everything was fresh and beautifully presented, and the staff were friendly and kind. Definitely a great spot for a date night or to celebrate an occasion. +15-course omakase +friendly service +reservations required

Yelp
One of the newer omakase spots on Oahu that I think is definitely worth the stop! I can confidently say I enjoyed EVERY dish 100%! The quality is top notch and you definitely eat your moneys worth! Service here is top tier, the chef provides A+ service to make your experience exceptional! They had unique dishes like mantis shrimp, I've been to almost every omakase spot on the island, and this was my first time trying mantis! I couldn't recommend this place enough! Thank you Sushi Gyoshin.

Yelp
We waited around 4 months to eat here because that's how booked out they were! Right across Ala Moana is this unassuming affordable and amazing omakase that's BYOB!! It was a great 15 course! Honestly everything was super good and fresh. The sushi chef & owner Mr. Hiro was super sweet as well! He explained every dish and cracked some funny jokes as well. I highly recommend you make a reservation and also the nice thing is, is that they have valet parking and it's only $3 which isn't too bad! You have to come here! I'll definitely be back for a special occasion ~

Yelp
Sushi Gyoshin is a intimate omakase bar with only 8 seats so you best believe that making reservations is a must. There were actually a couple people who walked in when we were dining thinking they could get in the same night, only to be turned away. They do have an online booking system but it doesn't have the feature where it shows what days are booked and you have to click around to find an available date and time. The omakase is comprised of 14 different dishes and is a mix of cooked and raw food. All of the courses tasted really good of course, but I found the creativity lacking a little. However, according to other pictures I've seen, it looks like the menu changes all the time. 1. Herring roe with cream cheese 2. Mozuku with ikura and crab 3. Miso butterfish 4. Kinmedai 5. Nodoguro 6. Awabi with liver sauce - * 7. Hirame engawa sashimi with onion ponzu sauce - * 8. Madai, shiso, ume, and gold foil 9. Sazae with butter - * 10. Chuutoro with truffle sauce 11. Akami with yuzu peel 12. Hokkaido uni - * 13. Smoked saba 14. Flour less matcha cheesecake - * The stars are the courses that I liked the best if you couldn't tell lol. The sushi chef was so nice and the decor is gorgeous with gold accents everywhere, which I guess is to be expected since chef is from Kanazawa City.

Yelp
We had the most phenomenal omakase experience at Sushi Gyoshin! We booked this reservation four months in advance because they're so busy and it was well worth the wait. This intimate sushi bar seats eight guests and has a chic ambiance with its simple and elegant interior design. The hospitality and service is truly top notch and Chef Hiro provided such an exceptional meal. This omakase was so unique and innovative with a great mix of creative dishes and traditional nigiri. All of the ingredients were extremely fresh and delicious. Each bite was incredible and I'll be dreaming about this until our next visit! Pro tip is to stop by the Sake Shop to pick up some high quality sake to pair with your dinner since this place is BYOB.
google avatar

Yelp
Well worth the wait. Truly a unique omakase experience with flavors that impress. I was blown away from the first course of Hokkaido octopus - it was so crunchy and fresh and the yuzu kosho sauce was amazing. I also had the best miso butterfish of my life. I can't even explain how good that tiny piece of fish was, it was perfectly seasoned and almost glowing? + there was not a single bone. Third favorite if I had to choose was the otoro with truffle! If you're looking for an amazing dinner and experience out I'd highly recommend Sushi Gyoshin be added to your list. Bring your own sake and plan ahead, the next available reservation may be months out!

Yelp
Amazing! The ambience is cozy and elegant. The chef is polite and friendly where you don't feel awkward eating at a counter. Most importantly I absolutely loved every dish he presented to us. It did not disappoint and the wait to get a reservation is totally justified.

Yelp
More Omakase in town? Perfect for me as a sushi lover. This place is hard to get reservation, you need to book at lease a few months in advance. $150 per person, BYOB. Street parking and a pay parking lot in the back. Each omakase restaurant has their unique style of preparing their food. Right off the back I can feel the difference. You can view my photos for all the food detail. They do not seem to use wasabi at all because I can't taste it in my sushi. I believe I counted a total of 14 dishes including the soup and dessert, not bad for $150. The place is clean and look very upscale, the chef is friendly. Highly recommended. Unfortunately, my next reservation is not until 2025, it will be a long wait.

Yelp
As I'm beginning to write this, I'm starting to feel like a villain from a marvel movie...all these 5 star reviews and here I am with my 4 star review so PLEASE HEAR ME OUT. This sushi omakase spot serves fish so fresh, I swear I saw a tuna wink at me. The quality is top-tier and some pieces were incredible and had me savoring every bite but I didn't get that "oh my goddess!! Life changing!!" feeling after every piece, it was more of a polite "oh, that's nice." The parking was a breeze, which is always a win. However, the service? Let's just say they had us waiting outside like we were trying to get into a nightclub, even though the place was emptier than my post-vacation bank account. Overall, great sushi adventure but not all the dishes hit the mark!
google avatar

Katherine L.

Yelp
Amazing sushi omakase experience! This is one of the BEST sushi omakase on the island (and I've experienced my fair share) for the overall price, beautiful presentation, intimate setting, fun rapport with the chef, delicious and fresh dishes, etc. There are only 8 seats, so advance reservations are highly recommended. BYOB at no additional charge. This was my 2 girlfriends' first sushi omakase experience and it did not disappoint. They both said that it was perhaps the best meal they have had in their lives. I can't recommend this gem enough! Thanks chef for the amazing experience!

Yelp
April 2024. Visiting from 9th island. Food, service and ambiance.....easily 5 stars. 16 course omakase that was better tasting and plating than the top tier sushi spots in LA, Vegas and NYC. And better value by a country mile. Each fish was distinct in flavor and presentation and seasoned with no need for any additional shoyu or wasabi or anything else. No two dishes were even close to similar in taste. 2 hours flew by but never rushed and never waiting either. The whole experience was high level Japanese cuisine at its finest.
google avatar

Mayumi C.

Yelp
What a great omakase dinner! Most of ingredients seem to be from Japan including Nori (from famous Ariake, Kyushu). We enjoyed Chutoro with truffles, Abalone , Ohtoro with Uni, Nodoguro from chef's home prefecture, Ishikawa and the dessert cheesecake etc etc. It was a great selection. The service was always attentive and good. Only one unavoidable problem is you can hear the sounds or people's shouts from the street if you sit closer to the entrance. Yet I am sure you will feel lucky to have Omakase there. Gochiso-sama deshita.

Yelp
Omg! I love this quaint, inconspicuous, classy omakase joint. Chef is amazing with his creative displays and presentation with his patrons. Pleasant staff and attentive. Hands down, quality, combination and tastes blended together seamlessly. So many combinations that only had time to take pics of all of my yummy food. You just need to try it and you'll understand this is a 10 for omakase!

Yelp
Chef Hiroshi Tsuji displayed his amazing skills and served us quality fish during my omakase dinner here. LOCATION: The restaurant is located on the corner of Piikoi Street and Waimanu Street. Look for the black painted wall with a Japanese style noren hung over the entry door. PARKING: There is street parking along side Piikoi Street and Waimanu Street. There's also a small parking lot in back, if you enter from Waimanu Street. ATMOSPHERE: Sushi Gyoshin seats 7 people at a time.. possibly 8? Reservations only.... and there are two seatings per night. The intimate setting made for a much memorable experience. The decor, dishware and even their bill holder had its own special touch. SERVICE: Service was incredible! You're greeted the second you walk in, water was constantly poured. Watching Chef Hiroshi Tsuji prepare each dish was fascinating! FOOD: Every dish was delicious, mouthwatering, flavorsome and delectable. I was very amused at the combination of seafood he used to make each dish unique. It was my first time having Sushi Monaka. He used uni, caviar, ahi and some other mouth watering ingredients inside and you eat it like a macaron. The best ever!!! I can't wait to bring my friends back here! Excellent restaurant!

Yelp
Oishiiiiii!!! I'm Japanese and visit Japan every quarter for work. So I think I know what I'm talking about I totally recommend this place.

Anna ..

Yelp
I ate here last year and just haven't written this review yet! We came for a birthday dinner after reserving back in March or so! The chef and staff were incredibly lovely people and the atmosphere was 10/10. Hiro made sure to make my birthday very special when he heard it was also my first omakase. The people I ate with were great and super friendly and we had a lot of laughs on our half of the table. We didn't realize it's such a strong BYOB culture (sake or beer with sushi, duh!), so it was shocking to others we didn't bring anything to drink. The prior reservation was so shocked to hear that when I was waiting outside, they gave me birthday alcohol they had leftover! Food and plating and aesthetics are amazing, I personally adored the dessert! The first dish was blue crab from Japan.. I'll have dreams about both of these dishes. The only non-silver lining is I personally don't have enough of a refined taste palette to discern awesome high quality fish (I can tell when it's fresh or frozen), so while I think this was the best omakase experience, I am not sure I'd try an omakase more than once a year. Maybe once every two years. But I feel so lucky I came here for my first time!

Yelp
Great experience! Food was great! The chef was very friendly and everything cleaned!! It's small place but good size! BYOB for now!! Highly recommend!!

Yelp
Wow wow wow. I've tried out quite a few omakases and this one is definitely at the top of the list. Initially drawn in by the exclusively 5-starred ratings, I went onto the website to make a reservation. To my horror, they were booked up til October. Before deciding to end it all, I threw a Hail Mary and called them to ask for their next reservation for 2, and was informed that they had an opening a few weeks down the road! So I recommend calling for a reservation. Small joint right across from ala Moana, not the most obvious place but you'll know when you see it. The bar had 8 seats, cool decor inside. Like mold, I love a good ol' dark broody atmosphere. Also BYOB which scores a lot of points in my book. Every single dish was plated beautifully and complimented perfectly with toppings. A lot of the fish was straight from Japan, super fresh tasting. Was either put into a food trance or drugged but was feeling pretty lofty as the meal went on. Chef's helper was very on top of it, refilling water often, clearing dishes etc. Just a great experience, professionally done (please take away my shoyu privileges again, I'd abuse if you hadn't). Great job Chef Hiro! Death row meal for sure.
google avatar

Ryan T.

Yelp
The $150 price for Chef Tsuji's 15 course omakase menu is well worth the price. We self parked in the small lot behind the restaurant though it's actually valet parking (we got there before the valet set up). The menu includes dishes not seen at other sushi restaurants like an ankimo "sandwich", chuutoro with truffle and the smoked saba. I'm not sure if the BYOB policy will continue (it was still BYOB in mid October) but BYOB is always a plus (we brought a Maurice Grumier Champagne) and the meal concluded with the BEST flourless yuzu cake! Reservations are filled 2 to 3 months out since there are only two 8 person seatings.

Yelp
This sushi restaurant is a hidden gem! 7-seat counter sushi restaurant just opened next to Ala Moana Shopping Mall. The sushi is authentic Japanese sushi, which is hard to find in Hawaii. All fish from Tokyo Tsukiji market that was fantastic. Tsumami and sushi were amazing ! His attention to detail made his creations hearty and very tasty. The comfortable atmosphere mixed with the whole experience really made me feel like I was back in Japan. It all came to a reasonable price too! Overall everything was great and i wish to come here regularly. Just a heads up, they do not sell alcohol so it is BYOB at the moment.

Yelp
With how many sushi places there are, you do have to be good to stand out in Hawaii. A small byob place with 9 ish counter seats and no tables. Set course without option to add on more at the end. The flavors were stronger than I care with, with bold truffle and other ingredients mixed into the usual suspects. Overall it was good, for the price, really good. But for how long the wait it, I would prefer somewhere else. The ambiance is quiet, and intimate. I prefer more of a lively area and environment, but everyone has their own preference. Give it a shot definitely. A nice new add to the scene in Hawaii. I would come back if someone wanted to go. If you ask me what their signature was, the last course was pressed vinegar saba, live cold smoked. Drowned out a bit too much of the flavor I was looking for, and I thought the smoke while nice on cocktails (maybe) has lost its appeal to me on food.
google avatar

Lina L.

Yelp
The outside was very discreet I didn't realize it was a Japanese restaurant at first glance. Once inside you are greeted by one sushi chef and waitress. 8 seat counter which gave the place a very intimate feeling. Every piece was perfectly curated creating a beautiful balance of flavor that merried so well together that it made me excited for the next. The nigiri was a perfect one biter but not too small you walk away hungry. At the end I was completely satisfied and my belly fully content. At $150 for 14 courses plus a airy yuzu cheesake for dessert, I felt I got my money's worth. I hate it when I spend a lot and didn't feel it was worth it, but not here. Definitely my top 5 omakase experience.
google avatar

Samuel B.

Yelp
Words can't express how amazing this place is, but I'll try! When you first enter this tiny establishment you are immediately greeted by the chef's assistant and sat at the sushi counter that takes up most of the space. The place only seats a max of 8 people. The bathroom takes up the rest of the space and doesn't disappoint! This 16 course omakase is feels like it's never ending and is absolutely fulfilling. The owner/chef describes each piece as he presents it to you, and clearly takes great care in the selection and preparation of every dish. This experience is a must for any individual or couple looking for an unforgettable meal.
google avatar

KD R.

Yelp
The food is fantastic. None of our party are vegan or vegetarian , and none of us felt like we were missing anything. There is a large selection of menu choices - something for everyone. Service is also exceptional. My only "wish" is that more dessert options were available, but maybe it was for the best!
google avatar

Lynn D.

Yelp
The location fronts Piikoi street so I was worried about parking but there are a bunch of free stalls in the back of the restaurant. Intimately set up for such a beautiful experience. Chef carefully prepares wonderful layered omakase dishes expressing what each piece is made of. It's a BYOB establishment hand they had wine glasses for us to use so I didn't have to bring my own. It's about a 2 hour seating. I didn't feel rushed and I was able to thoroughly enjoy each dish. The service was attentive and polite, and his attendant made sure waters were full and dishes were removed for the next one. This is definitely a must to experience and I will definitely be back again.

Yelp
Felt like I was in Japan amazing service and food. I made two more reservations thats how much i love it here. Above and beyond my expectations
google avatar

Yelp
Oishii!!!!! Chef Hiroshi's craft is exceptional. Fish was fresh from Japan. Every single item placed in front of me was top notch. Restaurant is small with 8 counter seats. There's no dedicated parking and street parking is limited. We paid for parking at Purve Donuts. Omakase is two hours so parking will cost you $8.

Patrick B.

Yelp
Great food! Sushi boat was so fresh and amazing! Service seemed unfriendly at first but once we started chatting, they were outstanding! Definitely a go to.
google avatar

Joshua M.

Yelp
Very delicious omakase. Had some unique seasonal dishes. 8 seater so it's very private. BYOB without corkage fee. For the price it's very reasonable. Didn't disappoint!
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious! If you are looking to celebrate a special occasion or just want to feel like you're in Japan again! Sushi gyoshin! Will take you there! Excellent! Food excellent service
google avatar

Thu P.

Yelp
Incredible experience! Chef was knowledgeable and personable and not intimidating. The fish quality and the dish combinations were each wonderful unique and still complementary!!! So much uni... yum! Besides chef, the hostess gave excellent service. Intimate place with 7 seats and byob. We made friends with the couple and a family of 4 during our exceptional and very reasonably priced dinner. We will definitely be back! Oh there's parking around the corner on Waimanu.

Rie K.

Yelp
It's small exclusive type Sushi restaurant. Only Sushi counter for 8 people. Omakase corse menu. Sushi Chef is very picky for sushi ingredients. So of pause food was super good!! I never think we can eat this top quality sushi in Hawaii. Details are on photos.
google avatar

Jonn D.

Yelp
I haven't reviewed any businesses for a while, but I had to chime in on this one and give credit where credit is due. WOW! OMG! OUTSTANDING! IYKYK. Reservations REQUIRED...if you can get one. A Full Review to follow. Mahalo for an Experience not to be forgotten. Aloha!

Yelp
Amazing sushi restaurant. I specifically love the Sushi Monaka from here. The combination of toro, uni, and caviar melts in your mouth like heaven. The service is great and everyone is nice. I love the dark interior that makes the ambience quite intimate and special, very relaxing too.
google avatar

Yelp
I went out with my husband as date night. Quality of fish, how chef cooked, service... everything was amazing. Will definitely come back at least once a month! Parking is behind the building.

Bill J.

Yelp
Insanely good...very creative, priced fairly, amazingly talented chef! I may regret this as reservations are already nearly impossible to get!
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent service and great ambiance for an intimate omakase dining experience with a master sushi chef.

Yelp
Would like to give 10+ STARS!! AMAZING AND DELICIOUS!! Well worth the price!! Chef Hiroshi Tsuji SO TALENTED in the dishes he prepares for you... FRESHNESS in EVERY BITE!! Seats only 8 people -- intimate & fun!!

Yelp
An awesome experience in itself! I think the most authentic omakase I have been to on Oahu, the chef is extremely talented at what he does and the food was even more amazing. It is truly an art what he does. Book ahead as they are booked out many months and for good reason. I truly felt like I was back in Japan. It is just a small door to enter with a small counter space so it's a very cozy and intimate experience.
