The 14 Best Sushi Omakase Restaurants In SF - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Otoro-obsessed Cow Hollow residents are lucky to have Sushi Hakko. The omakase spot is a destination for birthdays, double-digit anniversaries, and corporate card meals with clients who just took a lie-flat to Tokyo. Opt to sit at the eight-seat chef’s counter for the best view (and a special type of ginger only served at the bar), and a 19-course menu that mostly consists of pristine nigiri, plus small plates like toro tartare with caviar and uni or caramelized miso cod." - julia chen 1, lani conway, patrick wong

Pristine nigiri is the focus at Sushi Hakko - Review - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Otoro-obsessed Cow Hollow residents are lucky to have Sushi Hakko. The Japanese omakase spot is a destination for birthdays, double-digit anniversaries, and corporate card meals to impress clients who just took a lie-flat to Tokyo. Sit at the eight-seat chef’s counter for the best view and access to a special type of pickled ginger only served at the bar. It’s also where you’ll dig into a $210 menu that consists mostly of pristine nigiri, plus small plates like toro tartare with caviar and uni or caramelized miso cod. And despite the price tag and meticulously plated fish and rice, this place is laidback enough so you can talk at a normal volume without feeling like you’re about to get sent to the principal’s office. Food Rundown Omakase Your only option. Bigger groups can sit at the tables, but our favorite experience goes down at the counter, where you get a full view of the chef slicing and seasoning everything. The excellent nigiri rotate depending on what’s in season. And between all of the one-biters, you also get dishes like miso cod, crab soup, and simmered mushroom with truffle to round out the meal." - Julia Chen

The entire experience was great! Very pretty and creative courses! Nigiri was very delicious. The head chef is friendly, and service is elite. There are multiple servers serving you, and everyone is very welcoming. The restaurant interior is modern and new and atmosphere is very cozy and comfortable. P.s. Chef gave us a gift cake at the end!

I went on Tuesday evening, and it wasn’t crowded. The host and chef were very hospitable. Their dedication to their food and service gave me a fantastic experience! I had the omakase experience at the bar, and loved seeing the chef cut fresh fish to serve on my plate. The menu was a perfect balance of authentic nigiri/sashimi and dishes that showed off the restaurants creativity and style. Everything was delicious. I would definitely come back again!

Google
Amazing time at Sushi Hakko (back in May, but remembered to write a review)! Everything on their omakase menu was perfectly selected and prepared. Found out the sushi chef’s story (believe his name is Alex) and how this was the 1st of a group of sushi restaurants, and his true love. Really knowledgeable and offered great suggestions on our add-on pieces. The hostess’ name is Dream… tough name but she lived up to it! Super friendly, attentive & accommodating, letting my friend and I accidentally chat past closing without saying a word! Definitely recommend for a great experience in a casual, inviting setting

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A World-Class Omakase Experience — Deserving of a Michelin Star I had the incredible pleasure of dining at Sushi Hakko today with my 17-year-old daughter, and we were completely blown away. Chef Alex, the owner of the restaurant, was personally behind the counter preparing our 19-course omakase tasting menu — and every single dish was a masterclass in flavor, balance, and craftsmanship. From the first bite, it was clear that Chef Alex isn’t just serving sushi — he’s telling a story. Every piece was served over perfectly warm rice, seasoned precisely to highlight each fish. The attention to tradition was striking: for example, the miso black cod was prepared using a 16th-century Japanese recipe. Unlike the sweeter versions popularized by Nobu, this one had a deeper, more nuanced umami profile — thanks in part to the two-year fermented miso he uses. Honestly, it was even better than the version at Nobu. Standout dishes? Too many to name, but the Toro Tartare with caviar and uni on a rice cracker was truly out of this world — and came with a hand-drawn visual design created by Chef Alex himself. That artistic touch elevated the dish even further. The Uni, O-Toro, and Kinmedai were exceptional, and the final panna cotta was unexpectedly one of the best I’ve ever had — smooth, delicate, and beautifully balanced. Chef Alex is clearly a perfectionist and an artist. It shows not only in the food but in the way the entire experience is orchestrated. Sushi Hakko deserves a Michelin star — not just for the food, but for the heart, history, and vision behind it. If you’re looking for a memorable, elevated sushi experience in San Francisco — this is the place.

Google
I have to say this was even better than I expected. Really top quality food, made with love. Amazing mixture of flavours, some really pure, some complex, some traditional, some new. Sitting at the bar is a really special experience, Chef Alex Kim is focused on his work, but also passionate about it so he is happy to take time to explain to you about the history and his take on the dishes. Great food, excellent sake in a really chilled atmosphere.

Google
Sushi Hakko offers a delightful omakase experience, though it's worth noting that the bar omakase, while priced higher than the standard table omakase, isn't always worth the premium. If you're seated at the far left side of the bar, you might find yourself at a lower level, hindering your view of the chef's artistry. The menu thoughtfully highlights wine pairings for each course, making it easy to enhance your dining experience. However, be prepared for a 20% service charge, regardless of your party size. The omakase at the sushi bar comprises an impressive 19 courses, starting with edamame tofu and progressing through highlights like the flavorful suma katsu, the rich red crab soup, the melt-in-your-mouth chu toro, the sweet and delicate hotate, the luxurious uni, the satisfying toro tartare, the buttery king salmon, and the exquisite panna cotta. Our 19 course omakase included- edamame tofu, medai, suma katsu, red crab soup, hirame, tsuri aji, chu toro, kinmedai, hotate, ankimo, miso black cod, king salmon, toro, o-toro, masaba, uni, toro tartare, red miso soup and miso panna cotta. While the fish was undeniably fresh, some early nigiri pieces, such as the medai (chewy due to the skin) and the tsuri aji (with a stronger fishy taste than usual), didn't quite impress. However, the second set of nigiri showcased greater depth of flavor. The panna cotta, with its silky smooth texture, was a perfect finale. The service was consistently excellent, with a friendly chef adding to the positive atmosphere. The ginger on the side was a delicious touch, and the ambiance was inviting. Overall, Sushi Hakko offers a memorable omakase experience, but be careful when considering the bar seating.

Google
Relaxing, high end sushi spot with omakase service. Chef Alex was warm & friendly in conversation, and masterful in the preparation of each dish. I particularly liked the miso panna cotta for dessert, and then Alex delighted us with a complimentary truffle cheesecake!

Google
We made a bar seat reservation during last holiday season. The overall experience was good. Foods came with varieties in seasoning, taste and representations. We enjoyed hearing the chef talking about the fermented sauce he made for months/years. But wasabi amount was a bit too much for almost all nigiris. Inside the restaurant the smell was a bit fishy somehow. The restroom was super cold without a heated fancy toilet. $185 per person was kinda pricy for this experience.

Yelp
I have never had a more delightful dining experience. From the moment I walked in I was charmed by the ambiance as well as the lovely staff. Sitting at the bar watching Alex creating edible art with his knives and graceful hands was a gorgeous performance to witness. Every bite was better than the next. I have been spoiled in an oh-so-wonderful way by my evening spent at Sushi Hakko.

Yelp
I'll start with the bad as that's what people are mainly here for. I don't really post reviews unless something didn't sit quite right with me or something was so moving that I must share with the Yelp world. A little about us so you know where we're coming from: My partner lived in San Francisco most of his life. He's from HK but moved to the US when he was 10 (we are mid-thirties now). I am from SoCal and have been living in SF since 2016. We have eaten sushi all around California and frequently go to Japan. Regardless of US or Japan, my partner's favorite is usually Uni and I like Scallop. For fish, we don't have any we dislike or wouldn't eat. My partner tends to appreciate mackerel/yellowtail and I usually like flavors/textures like red snapper. I want to say we know what sushi should be priced and what makes an omakase worth going back for especially in California since they can charge up the butt. We have favorites in San Francisco, from the fancy feast type to the budget friendly kind, so our judgment for omakase boils down to taste, creativity, cost, service. The Bad: 1) -1.5 star for TASTE/CREATIVITY: My partner brought me here for a surprise Valentine's dinner. Most of the items on the menu was made up of fatty tuna, truffle, caviar. This is fine, but not what should make ANY meal be considered "fancy" in our opinion. Especially sushi. I can understand Fatty tuna since that tends to be a favorite in the US, but the rest? No. Only 7 items on the menu was changed, most becoming amberjack (which I love) with 1/4 teaspoon caviar and one or two slices of truffle. 2) -1.5 stars for COST: Their pricing on the website is reasonable enough to try even if some consider it to be on the pricy side ($170/person). In the middle of our meal we overheard a customer asking a manager why the bill was twice the amount. I'm not talking about the 20% tip because I think that's fair, but Sushi Hakko charged that dinner Singlethread prices (3-star Michelin pricing). We paid a bit over $600! Food was definitely not worth that much. Not sure if they upcharged because it's Valentine's Day, but having gone to Singlethread twice, this WAS NOT on par with them. Not even sushi restaurants, like An or Kusakabe (both in SF). It seems they only charged based on the price of ingredients. Disappointing :( The Good: 3) +2 star for the service/ambience. Everyone was super friendly and helpful. They check in with you and make sure your always have a full glass ladder of water and tea. Overall, my partner and I felt scammed and we'll probably never go back. Hopefully they understand why lots of folks have complained.

Yelp
The uni tonight wasn't fresh, caviar tartar was my favorite, but one thing that I have to mention, the service is beyond amazing, with true respect and care ! Wonderful dinner, will always come back

Yelp
Showed up without reservation for a table for 2 at 7:50 pm on a Tuesday night. Was turned away by host saying they were not taking any more walk ins. Too bad had a lot of money in my pocket and intent to spend on sushi.

Yelp
I really enjoyed my experience here. The menu items and food quality were good for the price. I also really appreciated the beautiful presentation of each dish. The service was exceptional. The staff were all so nice, attentive, and knowledgeable. The ambiance was great with dim lighting. We came here for an anniversary celebration and the environment and food did not disappoint!

Yelp
My wife loved coming here for her Birthday. Very low key Sushi experience with fantastic food and service! We sat the bar and had the chefs Omakase. I think it was a great value for what we received. We got a lot of one-on-one time with Chef Alex which made the experience more fun for us. The flavors of each dish were unique and intricate. The fish was very high quality and the execution of each dish is what you would expect from a high end sushi experience. The ambiance of the restaurant is very nice and the staff were very attentive to us. We came on a Saturday night and surprisingly it wasn't packed. Which could be great for those that want an intimate experience, but it could be a turn off for those that want to be in a lively atmosphere. Either way the food and service are what shines here.

Yelp
Everything about Sushi Hakko is a delightful experience. The knowledgable and friendly sushi chef, the ambiance, and the amazing selection of omakase sushi. It's my favorite spot for sushi in SF and the bar is quite high!

Yelp
What a special experience!! Tip: definitely get the bar seating to have your beautiful morsels of sashimi handed to you directly from Chef-Owner Alex himself. The attention to ingredients and presentation here is one-of-a-kind. Chef Alex selects fish that is at its peak flavor during each season. Since it is winter, we indulged on rich cuts like King Salmon from New Zealand, and Winter Yellowtail. He seasons all of the nigiri rice with aged 4 year vinegar. And he sources his miso from two very specific artisans in Japan. It was hard to pick favorites, when the lineup included multiple cuts of rich fatty tuna, tender scallops, and even a miso-infused panna cotta. But I'd have to say the uni might possibly have been it for me. Incredible, earthy, creamy, and divine in a bite. Pair it with a champagne or sake and you're good to go! Oh yes, and the service was super attentive and kind. I will definitely be returning!

Yelp
This was my first omakase and it was the best birthday dinner I have ever had! I highly recommend sitting at the sushi bar because the chef is such a pleasure to talk and the menu is more expansive. I came here as a recommendation from a friend experienced with omakase who raved about the quality and price of Sushi Hakko. All the dishes had amazing flavor, the fish was fresh, and the nigiris were seasoned perfectly. The chef told us that he made the soy sauce 5 years ago and the ginger 3 years ago, which really made a difference. The most stand-out parts to me were the red snapper clear soup, the soy cured medium fatty tuna, the potato terrine, the a-grade sea urchin, the supreme fatty tuna, and the miso panna cotta. The sea urchin (uni) tastes super fresh and there was no fishy-ness at all. We added on the daily special Hakko Uni bowl ($35), which was a combination of rice, uni, and truffle, and it was perfect for sharing between 2 people. It wasn't my favorite part of the meal, but it was rich, delicious, and a great addition. The total cost came out to ~$250pp with tax and gratuity ($170 omakase + $35 supplement + tax/tip). I highly recommend coming here for an omakase experience!

Yelp
I've actually been here 3 times in 2022. This is... the best bang for your buck omakase that I've had in the bay area. Omakase is like 170 or 180 pp pre-tip/tax I believe, and so you're looking to drop about 210 or 220ish when you come here. Hakko = Ferment in Japanese ... and it makes a lot of sense given the amount of care and love Chef Alex puts towards the ingredients he uses. Ask him about it when you get here. You'll be pleasantly amazed by it. Whether or not you can detect the value in the taste is based on yourself, but I can assure you that your tastebuds won't be offended at all. Everything tastes great here, and he mixes things up with the omakase by serving actual dishes in between the nigiri pieces as well. Sushi rice here is chef's kiss. Fish quality is chef's kiss. Where Hakko shines the best is actually not any of the above though - to me, it's actually his signature miso panna cotta dessert. You will taste it and understand. It is the most delicately sweet dessert with balanced flavors and sublime texture play. Ugh. I'd order 10x of these if I could, but they do take a lot of work so you can only get them via the omakase. His other signature is his toro tartare, which is also quite good, but if it had some citrus or a little more salt then it'd be even better. The only criticism I have of Hakko, which I've only noticed bc I've gone so frequently, is that the nigiri seasoning can be inconsistent. There are times when the fish is slightly too salty or underseasoned (like 1 piece out of the 10 of them), and because everything else is so good, the one flaw stands out even more. In a way I'm glad this occurs though... because I'm selfish. It's really only a matter of time till this place gets a Michelin star, and I'm dreading that day because the prices will likely increase as a result or the place will just be extremely hard to book. 9/10, would definitely come again (obviously) and definitely recommend to a friend. In fact, one of the reviewers on this place came as a recommendation from myself already and she enjoyed it quite a bit as well :)

Yelp
Wow such an amazing experience! Husband and I been to multiple omakases in the city but Sushi Hakko really stood out for us even when we compared to Michelin-star rated ones. Chef Alex is so passionate about his craft. He made his own sauce with fish that he dried and aged for 4 years! Great amount of items for the price! All the staff were amazing as well. Chef Alex has such a great personality and was very friendly. All fishes were super fresh and plating was beautiful! Will definitely come back in the near future!

Yelp
Wonderful and consistent food, service, and ambiance. The sushi (omakase and a la carte) is delicious, well balanced, and put together with care. It has been our go to sushi spot for years. Chef Alex is the best!

Yelp
Wow. That's the exact word to describe the entire tasting experience from start to finish. There's not much else to say lol My wife and I are addicted to sushi, especially when it comes to an omakase option. Without giving too much away, the price is incredibly reasonable for the quality and amount that you get. A great bonus is their unique selection of sake (the drink, not the fish) which paired quite nicely with everything we ate. We will definitely be back for another visit!

Yelp
Came here with my family last night so my parents could try omakase for the first time! We arrived ~30min early for our table reservation (it's a trek for us to get up to SF, especially on a weeknight) and they were able to seat us and get started straight away, which was a pleasant surprise. Despite being understaffed (the traffic on a Wednesday night was higher than expected due to the holiday season), the service was very friendly and attentive. They apologized many times for the slow service (which wasn't that slow for us; another party of 2 had to wait quite a while to get seated at the counter, but they were offered something on the house for the inconvenience), and overall were great! Onto the food: For the fair price point (as far as omakase goes), I was very impressed! I think the best (and most unique) piece was the toro tartare, which was tricky to eat but tasted great. Other notable pieces included the grilled king salmon, yellowtail, fatty tunas, butter fish, and AAA-grade uni. The miso panna cotta was also fantastic with the variety of textures (creamy, soft panna cotta + crunchy/sweet honey granola mix), and they gave us some additional chocolate truffles at the end which was wonderful! My only criticism would be that the preparation for both of the A5 wagyu pieces didn't do justice to the meat (the A5 wagyu w/ potatoes was kind of stew-like, which didn't bring out the best of the A5 texture/flavor. The piece with truffle was much better, but still didn't bring out the full A5 flavor IMO). Overall, a wonderful meal. We were only able to snag a table reservation due to our party size and short notice, so if given an excuse maybe I'd return someday to try their counter menu, which has a few more pieces that I'm curious to try, especially since the table menu turned out great :)

Yelp
Lovely. Bravo Perfectly enjoyable omakase tasting. The menu was masterfully curated. The cuts were intelligently designed. From yellow jack to tuna decked in paddlefish caviar to the most decadently topped tartar, each item the chef attended to lusters with deep lingering satisfaction. I loved it. Thank you. If I had to be nit picky, I just hope they move to a better location. I get it, gotta kee the lights on, but this place deserves wayyy better than Union Street. Anyway, loved the food, and the chef is a brilliant guys hope you all go and enjoy.

Yelp
Wow. Just wow. Please sit at the sushi bar. It is both an intimate and fulfilling experience getting to watch the chefs not only make the food right before your eyes, but also explain to you their thought process for the dish. You learn so much while sitting at the sushi bar and speaking the chef! Plus you get to share what you've enjoyed with past sushi experiences. I really enjoyed speaking to the chef as he was such a delight to chat with! The staff was also very accommodating and explained every dish to us. TIP: the menu at the sushi bar differs from the table menu I'd also recommend trying the AAA Grade Uni which is additional $20 per piece but it's absolutely worth it! There were other options as add ons if you're not an uni type of person. Otherwise I really recommend trying this restaurant as it was such a great experience and really set the bar high for other sushi restaurant. I probably will have a hard time eating sushi anywhere else!

Yelp
Really had high hopes but was very sorely disappointed. The service and people were top notch. The presentation was good and the environment was nice. But the food was really mediocre. As hard as they tried with the flavors and presentation, the food just didn't come off as anything special. For what it was trying to be, a high end fixed menu offering, the food was just disappointingly blasé.

Yelp
Food - AMAZING!!! Incredible. Got the Omakase with my husband and his parents visiting from Ohio. Chef Alex was so kind and welcoming. He was so thoughtful and made sure my in laws were comfortable even offering some small amounts of Uni ahead of the dish to ensure they liked it. He was kind and funny but always respectful and sincere. His dishes were at times a piece of art and everytime exceptionally delicious. The snow crab soup was unreal, so delicate and pure Nice Ambience, at times I wished it was a touch brighter so that I could better see the food. But I know if I had simply asked they would have turned up the light without any hesitation. Will definitely be going back!!! Makes Nobu look like McDonalds! Jk that place is good, but also- this was beyond amazing!!!!!!

Yelp
Based on ambiance and fish quality, I would rate Sushi Hakko a 3.5, rounded to 4 stars. The staff are very nice. The pieces were very hit or miss, which is something you don't want to say about a $180pp meal. If each grain of rice is about $1, there is a certain standard that should be fulfilled. Every bite should be enjoyable, which is not an unreasonable expectation. Instead I found myself questioning the quality of some of the nigiri. I find this place overpriced for what it is worth. Compared to other kaiseki style dining I've had, I was underwhelmed by the quality of the fish overall, specifically the yellowtail. Don't get me wrong, some of the nigiri was wonderful, but would you want to spend $500 total on something that is only 78% delicious? After all that negativity, here are some highlights! The toro tartare was great. I wish I could order it on its own and omit the rest of the meal. PS. I read another review regarding how one of the customers got food poisoning from the same course, and I also experienced a lot of stomach pain the following day, but who knows, that could be related to the joys of womanhood, rather than fish quality.

Yelp
This review is for only Valentine's Day menu. Sushi Hakko has been on my list of places to try after seeing my friend who has dined here many times before. Reservations were easy to make online. I was surprised at the slots open for vday weekend. Parking can be tricky since it's in the marina, but it's comes with the territory. It's $180/pp for Omakase. All the dishes were made especially for that valentines Omakase. My bf and I went the Sake pairing that was $170 and we both shared that. I'm so glad that we decided on doing the tasting. We found out some delicious sake to purchase in the near future. All the nigiri were delicious and the uni was the best part of the night. We added a supplement to our order. It was a uni bowl and it was amazing. They only make 3 per night. And we snagged the last one and they were not going to make any more. I felt so lucky. The only thing I wished that they didn't do was pre season the rice. I feel it tastes away from the fish, but overall it was delicious still. Also, the servers are great! They check in with you, tell you about each fish, and when you leave your seat they come and fold your napkin for you.

Yelp
Such an incredible omakase experience. The entire Sushi Hakko team was lovely and seemed just so genuinely happy to be sharing a meal with us. Every course was interesting, flavorful, and fresh. We left feeling full, but not stuffed (in a good way!). I'm genuinely surprised they weren't more crowded for a Friday night as I think their pricing is quite reasonable for the value and experience.

Yelp
While I enjoyed my meal here, to be honest, it felt pretty overpriced for what they served. Without supplements, the final bill was $167.22. The two standouts of the meal were the toro tartare and the miso panna cotta. By the time we got to those last two courses though, my mind was already made up that this meal wasn't worth the price tag given the fish used for the nigiri courses. Half of the fish were pretty common like what you could find a la carte at your neighborhood somewhat upscale sushi spot (e.g. yellowtail, tuna, ocean trout, horse mackerel). The service was fantastic though! I was particularly impressed that they noticed that my friend was left-handed and served her meal/utensils mirrored from the norm.

Yelp
Quiet intimate dinner 12/30/22 perfect way to end the year. My last restaurant dine in of 2022. Dinner was spectacular my friend said he didn't see me super giddy and smiley for awhile. It's definitely been awhile since I had a proper fancy omakase. The experience I had was definitely top notch, definitely recommend bar seating, our sushi chef was Alex and he took such great care of us. Making sure to wipe our plates, making sure we like the portion of the rice so touched by this gesture. He said " let me know if you're okay with the rice portion we can add more or less if you want" such a sweetie . he also gave us option if we wanted him to add more wasabi to the nigiri. The servers was very attentive as well. Ambience 5/5: Warm, cozy, relaxed. They played soft blues music in the background. The place is not big, few tables and a small sushi bar. Welcoming presence of staff. I typically like these small intimate restaurant. It was especially quiet on the day I came since it was raining. Food 4.5/5: Everything was delicious but I took half a point off since there's room for improvement. Honest review, the small courses outshined the nigiri. I really love the thought and creation chef put to create these. It tasted original, looked spectacular, the quality of course was top notch. My favorite was the crab soup they put so much crab meat in there and the miso panna cotta was great too not too sweet full of texture. The nigiri were standard. Quality of course was good, but there wasn't much elevation, most was brushed with soy. Some of my pieces tasted a bit too much soy not enough to ruin it but it can be better balanced. My friend thought it was fine though but he can understand what I was saying. Apart from that the rice temperature is perfect, texture perfect. Drinks 5/5: All the drinks we had were amazing. I recommend the rose sake i never tried anything like it. Also recommend the chablis that's not on the menu. You can check out our bill of what drinks we ordered. They were all delicious. Nice selection and paired well. The Chablis with the tar tar was . Service 5/5: Everyone was super friendly and all smiles :) I already mentioned in the beginning thus I shall not repeat. Recommend 5/5: It was worth. was it well worth? No, but definitely worth. Don't expect to get anything cheap and exceptional in sf. You pay for what you get and just be happy that you leave very full and the food provided was high in quality and made you smile from eating. It's not overpriced, it regular price. Anyway I recommend going here and I most likely will come back.

Yelp
We only had 18 hours in SF during our west coast road-trip and of course we had to make a stop for omakase. After reading and researching probably every omakase spot, we finally decided to try this one out especially since it's quite new. Reservations were easy to get about two weeks prior. We opted to sit at the sushi bar to get the best experience and omakase was $145 with the option to add on the premium $40 supplement including uni, salmon belly, and a5 wagyu. We started off with a light lobster salad with a seaweed truffle dressing followed by a few nigiris. By the 4th piece my husband already declared this the best food we had in our west coast food trip. I do agree with others that the chef does use quite a bit of wasabi but he does offer to adjust based on your taste after the first piece. We decided to continue with the current amount but just a warning for those who do not love wasabi. His rice is also perfectly cooked and seasoned. We loved everything, but the favorites of the night were the cured tuna, Spanish mackerel, toro tartare of course, rosy seabass and of course the uni bowl. Each nigiri was so fresh and of melt in your mouth quality and all of the dishes were so unique. We've been to omakases all around the US but this is definitely our favorite one by far. We were so happy we ended up choosing sushi hakko despite them not being as popular (yet) as other surrounding omakases and hope they get the recognition they deserve!

Yelp
Wow where do I even begin?!? We came here tonight to celebrate my birthday and I couldn't ask for a better experience! Kudos to Chef Alex and his amazing team! Everything was so perfectly executed with so much attention to detail - from each dish, to the concept of the restaurant and even the decor & details in the bathroom (it's been quite cold this winter but fret not they have a heater in the bathroom!). This spot has been on my radar for quite a while now and to my surprise, my amazing boyfriend made reservations for my birthday! We were warmly greeted by the whole staff who helped us to our seats at the chef's bar. Please do yourself a favor and make reservations for a seat at the bar! It was truly an awesome experience getting to watch Chef Alex work, chat and learn so much about the food and the concept for the restaurant. For example, Chef Alex shared with us that hakko means fermentation in Japanese. Many of the ingredients used have been fermented for at least 2 years, giving the restaurant its name. We had the prefix menu and everything was delicious. To start off, we had an asparagus tofu with dashi jelly. When I first saw this item I thought "okay, tofu with like a sprig of asparagus", wrong! Asparagus is pretty much blended in with the tofu and the dashi jelly was honestly chef's kiss. Our only wish was there was more tofu to finish the dashi jelly with. We were quite sad to leave behind so much delicious jelly. The rest of the nigiris were all very fresh. I really appreciated Chef Alex for taking the time to explain which seasons were better for certain fish. My absolute favorite for the night was the soy cured medium fatty tuna. It was so good we had to order another piece a la carte! A few other favorites of ours were the snow crab clear soup and the Spanish mackerel. The barracuda was interesting, can't say I've ever had it any where else before. I think the won't ding for me was that both tartares were slightly too salty for my palate. The miso panna cotta was a great finish to wrap up the night, tho I was so stuffed by the end of our meal. This was an amazing birthday dinner experience and couldn't recommend this spot more! I definitely can't wait to be back with my family and friends! Thank you for having us Chef Alex & staff!

Yelp
Sushi Hakko opened earlier this year and have been on my to-go list ever since. I decided to come here with my long time childhood friends to catch up and celebrate life, and what better way to do it than to eat one of our favorite cuisines!? We had to schedule a reservation a month in advance and we initially reserved the sushi bar, however, during the week of our reservation, they called and notified us that the bar will be closed throughout the month of November, which was kind of a bummer... We still made the most our of our catch up, so that wasn't an issue for us. Their core tasting menu ($145) includes the Hakko Salad with lobster pieces, 5 pieces of nigiri that you eat from right to left (the pieces taste better as you keep eating lol), scallop crudo, toro tartare, another 5-piece nigiri, hakko uni bowl, and miso panna cotta with the option to opt in for the 3-piece premium supplement for an extra $40 (ocean trout belly, sea urchin, A5 wagyu beef) which we originally wanted to go for. However, they accidentally served the miso panna cotta after the uni bowl instead of the 3 pieces, which was completely fine for us because we ended up being really full!! They ended up offering us a free glass of dessert wine since they felt bad for forgetting. My favorites were the 2nd 5-piece omakase set (cured king salmon, to be exact), the toro tartare, and the miso panna cotta. All of the fish were fresh and of high quality. They can be generous with the wasabi, so remember to adjust if needed. We really appreciate our wonderful server who's really knowledgeable about every piece as well as sake recommendations + the complimentary dessert sake. Overall, we had a wonderful experience and the meal was well worth the price for the amount of food you're getting. My friends and I approve and will definitely come back (hopefully at the sushi bar next time)!

Yelp
After seeing this place on everyone's IG story, I finally got to try it! My boyfriend took us here for our anniversary & it is now one of my favorite omakase places in the city! Service was immaculate, food came out at the perfect time (some omakase places literally take forever to bring 1 piece of sushi out), and the ambiance of the restaurant was very relaxing and romantic. Most importantly, each piece of sushi was so fresh! 10/10 stars :)

Yelp
Been passing by this place a lot. It looks fancy. Finally tried. But only a few apps. Service was very nice and friendly. VIP. The portions are v small. What you expect from a fancy place that won't get you full and breaks the bank. The Uni bowl was good with truffle. I always like Uni and truffle tho so cant go wrong. Idk if the flavors blended v well tho. Crab soup with dashi was good if there was more of it. Had a few sips so tiny. Shared the sea scallop. Thought all this was shareable XD. It was fine but not v memorable and came on the biggest plate. Made me chuckle. Overall not v impressed. Don't know if I'd be back to try anything else. Great service. Strange vibes. No change. And they include 20% for 2 people.

Yelp
Chef Alex is one of the BEST sushi chefs in San Francisco. At Sushi Hakko, he's serving up a beautiful menu highlighting some amazing seasonal fish with top quality ingredients. I haven't had such delicious Hokkaido uni in so long! Every dish is made with care and flavorful nuance. Be sure not to miss the supplements and definitely ask Alex to recommend a bottle of sake--you're guaranteed to have a great meal! I also highly recommend sitting at the sushi bar for the full experience!

Yelp
This was perhaps my worst restaurant experience I've had in the City of San Francisco. I question if the staff could correctly identify premium sushi from a bucket of bait fish. Maybe the recent Saturday evening (28SEP), my partner and I made the mistake to dine there, the staff was new? What ever the reason, they didn't know anything about the sushi they were selling. To the chef - Have you ever worked and trained in a sushi restaurant in Japan? If yes, then I assume you're aware that by smothering the fish in some kind of canned sauce (which I didn't request) customers will suspect the staff of trying to hide the smell of low quality or old refrozen fish. Sushi Hakko reminds me of a "fishy" version of Benihana. Both are a form of an omakase style 'food entertainment', except I think the raw fish may be a bit more edible at Beni's. For anyone who enjoys real sushi, this place doesn't serve real sushi, they serve entertainment to a willing and paying audience. Now I'm piling on... I'm uncertain how the cost of just two pieces of nigiri fish on rice, soaked in the house sauce, and two beers came to over $100? Other than that they included a mandatory 20% service charge, how is that possible?

Yelp
Just had the omakase here for my birthday and everything was amazing. Each piece is thoughtfully designed by chef Alex. My new favorite special occasion dinner spot. A true hidden gem in the heart of San Francisco.

Yelp
I have a problem of writing reviews until much later because laziness. I been meaning to write the review for my experience here but kept pushing it off. Coming here was a last minute decision and we didn't realize the time but we had already made the reservations for 8:00pm coming from East Bay. We tried rushing to our reservations the soonest we could. Though I did call in to let them know we would be a bit late. They were nice about it and there were no rush. Upon arrival, we were seated right in front of the chef. Something that's a duh comment. All the ingredients were fresh. My experience was as if the theme was "aged". I say that because it felt like a lot of pieces I had were "aged". We liked more than half of the items on the menu. Service is excellent as I enjoyed my whole experience here. Whenever we had questions, Alex explained them and now I learned something new. Executive chef Alex Kim is a man of creativity, dedication and passion for his crafts. He is a person with stories to tell and needless to say, we were really happy with this dining experience and definitely will be coming back. He was kind enough to offer me a secret bonus dessert too (which is ready to be offered to you too by the time I'm finally posting this. LOL)

Yelp
This review isn't really about the food at Hakko because we ended up not eating there after reviewing the menu. We thought this was just a neighborhood sushi bar, but it is not. Our family is definitely sushi friendly. I have dined at some of the Renowned omakase restaurants in the US. Per the waiter pre fix is really recommended. The pre fix was just not what we were looking for and we ended up not being able to find items we wanted to eat. Our reservation was 730PM on a Friday. The place was empty. We were seated and handed an omakaze menu. Open table had not mentioned anything that the restaurant was omakase only. We asked for an ala carte menu and were presented with similar items from the pre fix menu. Extremely limited fish types. There are no appetizers, per se. No wakame salad, no edamame, no rolls, no requests. If you want any of the typical sashimi or nigiri items and its not on the pre fix, you are out of luck. Even Omakase, the Michelin starred sushi restaurant has a menu twice as large. That said the sushi, the service, And the ambiance of the place look like they would be OK for a special occasion. If the restaurant wants to make it they're going to have to adapt and broaden the menu. Crenn, the Michelin 3 star restaurant down the street can survive on a once every two year clientele, it remains to be seen if Hakko will.

Yelp
Hands down my favorite Omakase experience. I made a reservation a month in advance for my boyfriend's birthday. Admittedly this was actually my second choice restaurant (juni was all booked) but I am super glad we ended up coming here! We parked in a nearby parking structure and walked over. I made reservations for the bar so we were able to hear the sushi chef explain the different types of fish. The omakase menu was $175 pp and My boyfriend also decided to do the sake pairing which was $130 pp additional (we forgot to take photos of the sake pairing menu) it came with 8 drinks, 7 sake and 1 champagne. This was absolutely my favorite omakase experience becsuse every piece and dish was a punch of flavor. Overall I was pretty full afterwards as well. There was so many great pieces that I don't even know what my favorite is!

Yelp
Let's start by saying Sushi Hakko is pricey; it's not the most pricey fancy sushi you could find in SF but there are more affordable omakase experiences that are almost as good. Yup...I'm kicking off the review on the pricing here. From there, we can talk about Chef's Alex's dream of fermentation. You name it and Chef here has probably thought about fermenting it from sauces to ingredients. You can tell its something special from start to finish from the service to the conversation at the sushi bar. It's not really an overcomplicated set of dishes but just a few well put together pieces so you can taste the fish and ingredients for each bite by bite. Though many things have a lot of sophistication. Most importantly, chef has some staples but does move the menu seasonally so coming back another time will give you new foods which only means you gotta plan to go back; I know I did and did.

Yelp
My bestfriend was in town and we wanted a nice quiet restaurant to catch up. She's never had omakase and really enjoyed every bite. We booked for a table experience but they were able to make room for us at the bar, very last minute. The chef is so polite, and my friend is a lefty and their even gave her left handed chopsticks. I never knew that was a thing. I've been here once before for my boyfriends birthday and it was just as amazing as the last time. The staff are very courteous and polite. Every interaction felt like a VIP experience.

Yelp
It's Memorial Day Weekend 2021 and there's a real palpable feeling that everyone is turning the page on the pandemic. My friend and I wanted to start the weekend the right way by trying a new Japanese omakase experience in the Marina. Sushi Hakko comes from the same family of restaurants as Sushi Hon, Sushi Shio, Barnzu and Sushi Ondo. It's a good group and I've generally had stellar experiences at their restaurants. Sushi Hakko was no exception. They offer a core tasting menu for $90 with available supplements (firefly squid for $15, 3 additional premium pieces for $35 and truffle/caviar for $30). My friend and I said yes to the firefly squid and the 3 added premium pieces. The meal included their house salad, 4 nigiri pieces (sea bream, yellowjack, lean tuna, cured king salmon), scallop crudo, another 4 nigiri pieces (amberjack, ocean trout, medium fatty tuna, black snapper), toro tartare, 3 premium pieces (rosy seabass, Hokkaido Uni, A5 wagyu beef). Everything was excellent (fish was really fresh, the tuna pieces melted in my mouth and the rice had the right amount of vinegar for me). My favorite was the scallop crudo (they had it in a really tasty gelee). The toro tartare was also a nice signature bite but can be a little messy. I would recommend the 3 piece supplement for the seabass and the Hokkaido Uni but the A5 piece I got was chewier than I expected. The miso panna cotta was just perfect and a great way to end the meal. Service was impeccable and the restaurant is bright and vibrant. With tax and tip and some sparkling water, this was $190 which is a good value for the experience. Definitely recommended if you are in the area.

Yelp
Traditional omasake in Japan is very simple, which doesn't include a lot of searing or gold flakes, etc. They are normally lightly brushed with ponzu and a hint of wasabi. Being American we are so used to food overly seasoned food but at Sushi Hakko, Chef Alex gives you the best of both world. Chef Alex is great and I cant wait for what he has in store for future openings. I went during the opening week with a lot of Covid restrictions. I liked everything chef Alex prepared for us but my favorite was the tuna tartare and the A5 Wagyu. So happy to welcome Sushi Hakko to Cow Hollow. Need more Japanese in the area. The restaurant is very contemporary, love it. I can't wait to go back. Also, the Miso Panna Cotta was amazing. Make sure you leave room for that.

Yelp
Hakko has a great venu - not the most classic omakase interior design, but still cute. The appetizers were very creative, but not the best taste.. Nigiri was also sort of tier 2 compared to other omakase restaurants in sf. The dessert was great tho!

Yelp
Sushi Hakko is one of the restaurants owned by my favorite restaurant chain who also owns Sushi Ondo, Shio, Hon. My ultimate favorite is sushi Ondo with Chef Jason where I've been a regular for many years. The consistency of the sushi at these restaurant is impeccable not to mention the quality and creativity of their omakase menu. Bright and fun decor with great service as always. Highly recommended for a special evening.

Yelp
What an amazing sushi restaurant! Went for the sushi. Ar omikase experience and it was completely worth it. The staff was incredibly knowledgeable and were great hosts. Could not recommend it more!

Yelp
Thank you to Chef Alex for the invite to the pre-opening event. This is the latest restaurant as part of Mins Group. Sushi Hakko has a great location in the Marina with lots of foot traffic and a wide open feel. Each of the restaurants has a unique style. Congratulations on an another successful restaurant opening! Chef Alex always creates amazing food and this is the best omakase in the Bay Area balancing high quality ingredients, creativity, taste and cost. The newest favorite dish is the toro tartare. The toro on top of a rice crispy cracker. Wishing you all much success and we will be back for more!

Yelp
Enjoyable omakase experience. My friends and I savored each piece of nigiri that was presented and agreed that the quality of the fish and sushi rice is a thumbs up! My favorites of the night were not the nigiris though, but the scallop crudo and the miso panna cotta. The scallop crudo was so refreshing and was the perfect balance of flavors. The miso panna cotta was deliciously creamy with a light hit of salt that didn't overpower the sweetness of the dessert. I could eat bowls and bowls of both these dishes! Some of us at the table ordered the supplements and/or the caviar and truffle add-on, while some of us did not. I'd say you can definitely skip the caviar and truffle add-on. It really didn't do anything to enhance my omakase experience. The extra truffle is added onto the salad (which was delicious by itself already!) and I think extra caviar was added onto one of the nigiris. Service was friendly, although it took some time to place our order in the beginning. I felt like we were sitting there for close to 20 minutes. It didn't help that our reservation time was one of the later times in the evening so I was anxious to order and make sure we could leave the restaurant before midnight (exaggerating!). Would definitely grab an earlier reservation time if possible since we ended up being at the restaurant for close to 2.5 hours.

Yelp
You should definitely consider going to Sushi Hakko in the marina. The service is impeccable and the sushi is so fresh and perfectly made.

Yelp
Super cute spot for date night, with your SO or friends. We added the add ons. The amount you get, the quality, it's not bad for the price. Some of the items were a little bland to me, but overall was fresh.

Yelp
Went here for our 4 year dating anniversary this past June. We were greeted with a warm welcome & enjoyed awesome conversation with the sushi chef. He always checked in with us to see how we were enjoying each bite in order to gather feedback on how tasty + how full we were (I was getting stuffed while fiancé was surprisingly getting full too, which made sense because he usually doesn't get too full on omakase) He even brought out the trays of uni and explained to us where they were found as well as the different types of grades available. At the end of the night, they shared a shot of sake with us on the house in celebration of our anniversary. Dining here truly made our night even more special. We will be back very soon!

Yelp
Long over due review, but had to share my love for my first omakase experience! Although I did not have the chance to eat at the chef's counter due to COVID restrictions at the time, I had a great dining experience! The highlights for me were the toro tartare, miso panna cotta and the scallop crudo. The quality of each dish was definitely worth the price. As for as pricing for omakase goes, I think this is a great affordable spot as the cost for for this meal at this time was 90$ plus tip (not including the drink pairing which was 80$ pp) The staff were very friendly as well and explained each dish very thoroughly. Will definitely be coming back!
