"San Francisco, whose wealth and good taste have made it an omakase sushi promised land, has lured another talent to town: Chef Tomonori Nagai, whose new tasting menu restaurant, Sushi Nagai, is now open. The restaurant is located at 125 Ellis Street inside the Hotel Abri at the edge of Union Square and the Tenderloin in what was once an outpost of Cold Stone Creamery. Nagai and his eponymous restaurant arrive with a $180 menu to start, according to a press release. That’s for 15 pieces of sushi, mostly sourced from Japan’s famous Toyosu Fish Market, and served in the Edomae style (early, traditional sushi preparations developed in Tokyo). Nagai’s experience includes time at Morimoto, Hawaii and work at Shinji by Kanasaka, a Michelin starred sushi spot in Singapore. Price-conscious customers — if there were such a thing in this regard — take note: After a grand opening on June 4, prices at Sushi Nagai will rise to a high-flying $200 to $250 per meal. What’s now Sushi Nagai, keen observers will recall, was previously slated to become another sushi restaurant — one from Singapore-based Japanese chef Kenjiro “Hatch” Hashida, It’s not clear what fell through there, but it gives chef Nagai a chance to shine. A sample of his menu is below, though offerings will change as often as twice a week. A short list of sake and wine is available as well." - Caleb Pershan

The experience by itself was worth it, let alone the food. I've never had an experience similar to what I had at this restaurant. Every bite is unique. There is someone dedicated to preparing food right in front of you. They have a fantastic wine and sake selection as well. I want to give a special shout out to the general manager of the restaurant who made the experience above and beyond anything I could have expected. Thank you!

Truly unique experience that transports the feeling of being in Japan. Chef Nagai-san is a master at creating beautifully exotic edo style sushi with authenticly sourced ingredients. The omakase style menu enables a magical exploration of flavors over a dozen courses. Make the journey to try this!

I wanted to like this sushi restaurant but they unfortunately didn’t live up to expectations, especially since there’s so many good sushi omakase restaurants in the Bay Area. First off, it’s priced really high so already setting expectations high. Per person is around $200 before tax, tip and any drinks. (It can fluctuate depending on the ingredients they use at the time) Second, the timing is off. Because they don’t have set seating times, the chefs have to make each piece/dish as people come in. It leaves empty time between each dish or bite sometimes and that’s awkward for sushi omakase. Omakase is also about the rhythm of the dishes. Lastly, the dishes and nigiris were good but nothing blew my mind or really stood out. At the end of the night, I was thinking I’d rather go to other sushi restaurants such as Ju Ni or Sasaki where you’d probably spend about the same amount per person as you would here but the experience is just a step higher. Sorry sushi Nagai.

This is a brand new restaurant, it opened just nine weeks ago. It is a omakase-only edomae-style sushi restaurant. It is a very special restaurant that will deliver a one-of-a-kind sushi experience, with a price tag to match. Chef Nagai presides over a small number of seats in a sparsely-decorated location just off of Union Square. Over nearly two dozen separate courses, you will be served expertly- and individually-prepared morsels from the sea, while the chef makes jokes and answers questions. Nagai and his staff are friendly and unassuming, almost to the point where the food is of a different atmosphere than the service. I love sushi and love to see what's out there; this is worth a special trip.

Very nice restaurant, Chef Nagai focus on the original taste of food instead of the outlook or smell of the food. Suggest to everyone who cherish food and enjoy food.
