NYC’s New Restaurant Openings - New York - The Infatuation

"There’s another new omakase spot that’ll cost you less than $100 before tax and tip in Soho. Sushi Ōuji asks for just $89 for 14 courses during a 90-minute seating. While the counter setting isn’t as intimate as a private table, it could be a good choice for a relatively budget-friendly omakase. There’s a counter, but also some tables." - Will Hartman, Willa Moore

“Manhattan is swimming in fast omakases, but the $109 procession of courses at Sushi Ouji, a subterranean spot that opened in December on Prince Street, stood out with a lovely chawanmushi starter loaded with snow crab and scallop and a gorgeous slice of ikura-topped futomaki served after nine pieces of nigiri. —T.T.”

You’d appreciate their craftsmanship and attention to details. Sashimi was fresh and treated sophisticatedly - wood smoked, fresh cut, fermented. Such surprisingly new flavors in fishes I’ve had before. Beautiful selection of plates and cutlery as well! All in all great experience and HIGHLY RECOMMEND:)

Google
Phenomenally good meal and atmosphere. Great service by the staff, however I did give it a 4 for service as the one comment I had would be that our chef didn’t really explain most of our sushi pieces to us. There were 3 of us and often he would just put the sushi in front of us and we would eat it without knowing what cut or fish it was. This may be because we were talking between the 3 of us and socializing but it is a bit awkward to get an omakase and not know what you were eating. We did have an a la carte menu to order more pieces afterwards but it’s hard to say which piece you would want to re-order if you weren’t sure which it was you liked. Though with that being said the food was delicious and we would go back.

We came to Sushi Ouji to celebrate my friend’s birthday, and it was an incredible experience! The service was impeccable—friendly, attentive, and made us feel so welcome. The food was absolutely spectacular. My personal favorites were the tuna and eel bites, but honestly, every dish was phenomenal. The sake pairings were a perfect complement to the meal, and the staff was knowledgeable in recommending options. For the quality of food and service, the pricing is very reasonable. If you’re looking for exceptional sushi with a warm and inviting atmosphere, Sushi Ouji is a must-visit. Highly recommend!

Absolutely loved this place! The sushi was super yummy — you could really taste the freshness of the fish, straight from Japan. Chef Tony is amazing; you can tell he puts so much care into every dish. The atmosphere is really calm and modern, perfect for a relaxing night out. The manager was also incredibly kind and attentive. Can't wait to come back!!!!

From the moment you step inside, the friendly staff make you feel right at home, offering attentive service with a genuine smile. The sushi pre-fix menu is a standout, featuring a variety of expertly crafted pieces that highlight the freshest fish and delicate flavors. Each course is thoughtfully presented, showcasing the skill and artistry of the chefs. The decor is clean and minimal, creating a calming environment where the focus is on the food. If I could give more than five stars for the food and the service I would. Sitting at the counter watching the chef prepare and explain everything was an amazing experience.

Yelp
Fantastic meal, best sushi so far in NYC. The service was excellent. Come and try and you will never regret.

Yelp
It's always a gamble trying new sushi spots, but this time my gamble paid off! Sushi Ouji serves more traditional style sushi, but it was anything but boring. Rice was well seasoned and fish was fresh. Each nigiri was a decent size and you will leave full after the omakase course. Much better than say Nakazawa for a lower price point!

Yelp
Beautiful omakase, each dish had good ingredients and nice flavors which were on the subtler side. Portions were a little smaller than some other spots but overall was really good, and service was very helpful. We finished with tea and dessert which was a cheesecake. The restaurant was quite with gentle music.

Yelp
With a zen-like atmosphere, great service, and delicious food, Sushi Ouji is a beautifully crafted hidden gem in the hustle and bustle of the big city. Since it seems like it just recently opened, reservations for same day Friday night was surprisingly easy to make on Resy. I would highly recommend getting seats at the counter since it's nice seeing the chef cut our fish right in front of us and explain each piece. This restaurant serves it "omakase" style (chef's choice) meaning that there is a set number of pieces you'll receive one by one along with some appetizers and a dessert. Like more traditional places, there's the option to eat with your hands (highly recommended) as they supply you with a little vertical wet cloth to wipe your fingers after each bite. Each bite of fish was scrumptious with a mixture of classic pieces and more avant-garde/interesting flavored ones. The price for the meal was $109 (before tax and tip) which was solid considering this is New York and omakase style restaurants don't tend to be cheap.

Yelp
Sushi Ouji is a new omakase spot in soho that just recently opened back in December. They're still in their soft opening phase so things may change once they fully open. The omakase consisted of a 15 course meal starting with an assorted sashimi appetizer, followed by an ikura don, chawanmushi, 9 pieces of nigiri, tuna futomaki, miso soup, and ending with warabi mochi as dessert. Their drink selections were pretty limited compared to some of the other omakase places I've been, likely due to it being a soft opening menu. We received a complimentary piece of futomaki and the dessert came with a hot cup of hojicha, both of which were very nice. Some standouts of the night were the scallop nigiri and the uni. Overall, everything tasted very fresh and pleasant. While I understand that they are still in their soft opening phase, there are still a few things that could've made the experience better. The chef was quiet and kept to himself throughout most of the meal - it would've been great if we could have gotten to know him better and had some small talk as we were seated at the counter. Additionally, the service was a bit slow to start and they also forgot to give us our drink order until we asked again. They were nice enough to give us a free refill though so we didn't mind too much. In the end, it was a decent omakase experience and a good option for a night out.

Yelp
This is THE BEST sushi restaurant in NYC! If anyone is looking for an omakase experience and a quaint private ambiance - this is IT!! Chef Ben's creativity packs a unique and delicious burst of flavor per each bite. As soon as you walk in, you can smell the fresh fish and ingredients that will adorn every single plate. I met the manager / owner Kevin about a year ago and have followed his journey ever since. He has done an incredible job and takes care of each customer like a part of the family. This will be my new sushi spot from now on!

Yelp
After dining here, Sushi Ouji quickly became one of my favorite sushi spots in New York. I appreciate its quiet upscale ambiance. All the ingredients were incredibly fresh, and the vinegar rice was a perfect complement. The entire dining experience was wonderful--I can't wait to come back!

Yelp
The omakase in NYC. The server was very nice. The space was little small but perfect for omakase. The price is affordable which was $89 for 14 courses with amazing quality!

Yelp
So good! The hospitality, price, freshness of fish from Japan, atmosphere makes this an excellent choice for dinner and celebrations. Thank you to Kevin and Eason for a great evening!

Yelp
Sushi Ouji was amazing!! My boyfriend and I came here to celebrate our 5 year anniversary, and Sushi Ouji delivered. The place itself is intimate, and I would recommend sitting at the bar if you can to watch the dishes being made. Food was amazing, fish literally melting in my mouth. I loved how the omakase was a mix of rolls and cooked dishes and felt like each dish was better than the last. Thank you to Kevin for making it an amazing night! He ensured all the dishes were getting out on time and even gave shots to the entire party to celebrate their recent opening. Will definitely be coming again

Yelp
I have been to many, many sushi restaurants across the city and Sushi Ouji really stands out. The quality of the sushi at the price point is unbeatable. My friend and I were really impressed by the variety of dishes served as well - and the balance of the accents to each piece of nigiri were in perfect proportion which is something that I've noticed many other restaurants at their price point struggle to get right. Also - I absolutely love uni but so often it lacks the magic of a truly great piece of uni (creamy, tastes like an ocean breeze) and this was top notch. We ended up getting three of the special nigiri as well (Akagai - Ark Shell/Red Clam, Kamasu - Barracuda, and Aori Ika - Bigfin Reef Squid). So much fun to try cuts that you might not normally get and we loved them all. Definitely recommend the counter as other reviewers have - not only do you have enough space to not feel like you're elbowing your neighbor but watching the chef work and seeing what is coming next is a lot of fun. I also have to commend them on their hospitality - Kevin at one point apologized for the service and said they were down a few servers that night and you truly never would have known. Everyone was extremely attentive and my water glass kept being filled before I noticed it was empty. We also tried two carafes of the sake - though they have more expensive bottles, they also had some very reasonably priced carafes which made it a lot more accessible for my friend and I who don't know very much about sake. I loved being able to try more than one!

Yelp
Great hidden gem! We've walked by it so many times on Prince st to either go soho shopping or grab a matcha and never noticed this little storefront. Great quality fish and great service. I recommend and I would go back again.

Yelp
We had a beautiful experience here! Sushi Ouji is just about two months old. The host, Kevin, is lovely and very attentive. The 14 course omakase includes many amazing sushi courses, but also two unique egg custard and rice courses. Everything was incredibly fresh--the uni arrived that morning. The dessert, also included in the fixed $109 experience, was a sweet potato cheesecake and homemade mochi which and was a true delight. It was served with a beautiful decaf Japanese tea to end a wonderful night. Overall, wonderful service, fresh food, nice instrumental music, and a wow dessert.

Yelp
Chef Ben and the staff were amazing! Sushi Ouiji is a new spot in SoHo that opened 2 months ago. We got to try a lot of incredibly fresh cuts of fish and appetizers. The best were the Hokkaido scallop that was generously portioned and the perfect texture. Along with the Japanese shrimp that also happened to be Chef's favorite. Service was perfect and did a great job celebrating my brother's birthday. Cannot wait to visit ag

Yelp
Food, service and ambiance were all 5 stars at Sushi Ouji. My husband and I went to celebrate my birthday in NYC and were not disappointed by this omakase! This was some of the freshest fish I'd had in a while, each piece of nigiri was truly better than the next. Kevin, our host, made our experience one for the books. I can't wait to come back to NYC and ultimately back to this spot. Highly recommend!!

Yelp
Had a great experience at Sushi Ouji. Service was great and ambiance was nice and peaceful. The lighting is also very nice and just right, enhancing the pleasant experience. My favorite piece was the anago, it was so delicious. It was my first time trying anago because most of the other omakase places within the same price point usually only offer unagi.

Ouji offers a unique dinning experience with amazing Omakase spot!!! You can tell the quality of the fish All fish is incredibly fresh and tasty, love fatty tuna and uni. Btw, there is chef special everyday

Yelp
Absolutely fantastic omakase experience! One of the best I've ever experienced. The manager, Kevin, and his whole team created such a warm and welcoming environment that perfectly complimented the delicious, extremely high quality dishes. My friend and I had an amazing time and will definitely be coming back. I would also recommend diners try their extensive sake menu which nicely complimented the meal.

Yelp
When my husband suggested we try this place I thought: $109 for omakase? It's gonna be janky. But, I was wrong. If we were just judging on the nigiri alone (there are 10 pieces total) then it's a 5/5. Each piece was perfection. Pound for pound, I would say the nigiri here is better than even Nakazawa. I'm not joking. In addition to the 10 pieces there was a sashimi starter, a ikura don, a chawanmushi, miso soup, and a dessert. Those courses were literally a bite each. I would have liked the other savory courses to be a wee bit bigger, like 2 bites each. The service and ambiance are fine for the price point. It's like a wednesday sushi place for me, not a special occasion sushi place. But I think the city needs more of this. Omakase prices are out of control. (As for the ambiance/decor/music: my 2 cents is... instead of trying to emulate a fancy japanese restaurant and not hitting the mark, find your own style and voice and embrace that. Ultimately that will set you apart from the rest (I'm a marketing director)).

Yelp
Fantastic in all aspects. Quality of fish, service, ambiance all 10/10. can't recommend enough

Yelp
