Tokyo’s Wagyumafia Bringing Legendary $180 Wagyu Sandwich to Chicago | Eater Chicago

"At Sushi-san on July 14 at 10 p.m. I can attend a late-night $125 wagyu dinner where Wagyumafia’s katsu sando will be available alongside Hisato’s tricolor nigiri, which layers warm sushi rice, a skinny slice of raw wagyu, Hokkaido uni, and a crown of caviar; he’ll also grill yakiniku served with unlimited Asahi beer, and in true Hamada style there will likely be off-the-cuff surprises." - Kat Odell

‘Time Out’ Doles Out Five Stars to S.K.Y. in Pilsen | Eater Chicago

"A new-school sushi experience that spotlights chef Kaze Chan’s talents: small plates like Tako Tacos — octopus, avocado, fried garlic, and spicy aioli in crispy nori shells — burst with complementary flavors, while a furikake scallop of sliced scallops roasted in furikake butter and finished with yuzu is soothing and umami scallop hand rolls are described as tasting like a warm hug. Serious sushi eaters are advised to book the omakase counter for standout bites such as ponzu-kissed Kumamoto oyster, hokkaido-wrapped uni, and XO-glazed chutoro." - Jeffy Mai

Google
A casual and more relaxed place to go get some sushi. Doesn't try hard to be trendy or hip because its just great sushi for a reasonable price. Estimated average about 8.50 per roll. Staff are knowledgeable about their menu and make an effort to ensure everyone can dine there.

Google
I was disappointed with my visit to Sushi San. The fish was flavorless and oddly cut into strips, which made the texture unpleasant. The cucumber roll was also difficult to enjoy because the vinegar taste was far too strong and overpowering. The service was fine, but overall the quality and flavor just were not there.

Google
Sushi San is hands down one of the best family-owned restaurants we’ve ever been to! Every time we come, the food is consistently fresh, flavorful, and absolutely delicious. You can truly taste the care and quality in every bite. One standout dish we keep coming back for is the teriyaki beef—perfectly cooked, tender, and packed with rich, savory flavor. It’s easily one of the best we’ve had! Pair it with their fresh sushi or a warm bowl of miso soup, and you have a meal that never disappoints. Beyond the food, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming, plus they are always playing animal planet and SpongeBob which I really appreciate. If you’re looking for incredible sushi and outstanding service, Sushi San is the place to go!

Google
This sushi place blew my expectations! I ordered the caterpillar, the philli, and power rolls, when I picked up my order they gave me a complimentary cucumber roll 😭 Not only that but they were all fresh and delicious. I look forward to dining in next time.

Google
Food was really good, staff was friendly, however I was eating alone with my baby and 6 year old, as I was eating I started to get really severe cramps and had to leave as soon as possible, I was getting dizzy and not good. The owner or manager was very unsympathetic and lectured me on wasting food, and when I tried to explain I wasn’t trying to waste , but that I had to leave due to being so sick and alone with two kids, he still proceeded to charge me for the food I couldn’t eat. It is their policy to charge for food that’s not eaten, BUT I was visibly sick and the waitress even offered me tea to help ease my pain, and the owner couldn’t be bothered to help and didn’t even check if I was okay, I was going to come with my entire family for Xmas eve dinner but that won’t be happening now.

Google
Best Sushi around! I have stopped at several of the other sushi restaurants in the area and, hands down, this one is the best! The Darwin is my favorite, and we get the Mountain every time! But they have an extensive choice of other favorites. Everything is always so fresh.

Ruby C.

Google
Will never go to another sushi place as memorable as this one. Over the top quality service, honestly better than some people deserve. Will recommend it to anyone and everyone.

Google
This IS my go to spot for sushi. In all the years I’ve been coming never once have I had anything other than a excellent experience. Always fresh and delicious. Jun, James, Elizbet, Jane and Sean always make us feel welcomed. Keep up the good work and thank you. 🖖🏻LLAP

Yelp
Fantastic sushi at a reasonable price. Very friendly and hardworking staff that are highly experienced in crafting sushi. Pleasant place to sit down inside of! Bring your friends and family for a great dinner!

Yelp
Amazing - the sushi and spicy beef entree were remarkable! Will definitely be back. We got the Maria and Las Vegas rolls

Mary D.

Yelp
I had dinner here for the first time and it was the absolute best sushi I've ever had, and I've been eating sushi for 45 years! I highly recommend the ASU, the Cherry Blossom and Flash rolls! While I enjoyed watching scenes of the sea on a tv behind the bar, the food is the big attraction here. And I can't praise the service high enough. The service staff were friendly, helpful and gracious. I wish I weren't visiting from out of state or else I would go back there next week. And one last thing, the prices were more than reasonable. I can't recommend Sushi San enough.

Yelp
Took my parents here after they were away on vacation for a month. This restaurant has been around for a long time. I have eaten here once or twice before and that night the sushi rolls were all very good. They also bring us one roll for free but didn't say why. We appreciated that either way and finished everything! I hope they keep up the food and service!

Jason F.

Yelp
We have gone to Sushi San for years - it is a favorite of ours. From the food to the service, it is always a treat. I love their Spicy Mountain, Cherry Bomb, Spring Roll, and Shogun. They have rolls you don't find anywhere else!!
google avatar

Joan M.

Yelp
I came here for lunch and ordered the sashimi. What a joke--you get sashimi that is about twice the size of a scrabble letter. They must cater to regulars and forget about attracting new customers. There were no other customers, except our table, and I don't know how they survive. I won't be back.
google avatar

Rob U.

Yelp
Food was ok. Sushi seemed fresh but their cuts were thin. Don't skimp on the sashimi cuts !! Also it took a while for our rolls to arrive. Our server was friendly and attentive. The place could definitely accommodate lots of people but it's never full.
google avatar

Yelp
First experience here. Ordered 6 rolls. Great tasting sushi for a good price. I was pleasantly surprised & i am so excited to come eat here again. The ambience is awesome too. Just a really welcoming environment. The servers were helpful & the service was fast

Yelp
Got here at 9:03pm after driving 15 minutes across town since their hours online and posted on the building say 10pm, just to be told they weren't serving anyone else. It was not busy, they just said they already did last call. Then close at 9 or at least 9:30

Alia

Yelp
I stubbled across this place one day because I was in the area and it is now my new favorite sushi place!! Sushi tasted fresh, this spot is a must try
google avatar

Yelp
Decided to give Sushi San a try on a Saturday afternoon around 3 pm. Definitely not a super popular dining time, as the restaurant wasn't too busy. I wish I had remembered to take a photo of the interior since it is comfortable and cute. All of our rolls were very solid and the quality of fish seemed decent as well. The prices were fair as well. The menu is extensive and there are more specials written on chalkboard on the walls (but to be honest are a bit hard to read). I would consider this a middle tier sushi restaurant where you're willing to pay a bit more for better quality fish (as opposed to an AYCE spot), but it's definitely not one of the more expensive upscale sushi spots. For me this will be a new go-to casual date night spot! Service was attentive and we had no issues at all. I will definitely be returning to try some of the other menu items!

Yelp
Their food has been top notch every time I have gone. My order has always been perfect with no mistakes. They staff is always so kind, and the atmosphere is great.

Yelp
Worth every penny. I don't like sushi, but my sister loves it, so we went to Sushi San together. I ate the egg rolls and dumplings. Both were amazing. I usually feel like I'm eating an afterthought when I order a non-sushi meal at a sushi restaurant, but both of my dishes were delicious. My sister enjoyed her sushi. She originally thought two plates would be too much food, but after trying them, she had no problem eating every roll. The only reason I didn't give 5 out of 5 is that the ordering process is a little awkward (especially if you have a personality like me where you feel anxious ordering at restaurants). We were handed a paper and asked to fill it out with our order. Not all of the options on the menu were on the paper. I am pretty sure they told us what to do with the paper when we were done, but we couldn't hear them in the noise of the restaurant, and spent some time debating who, if anyone, we should approach to find out.

Yelp
Ordered a variety of rolls, sushi and sashimi, seaweed salad and I think that was it! They added an extra roll for free- score! But overall was just ok sushi. I tried the island roll- really liked that but besides that one, were just ok (how is, crazy horse, and 911) The rice didn't stick well so all the rolls fell apart when going to dip in the soy sauce. Maybe if it were easier to eat, might have been better but it was frustrating they all fell apart. Going to continue searching for other options for go-to sushi. Price was decent though.

Yelp
Delicious rolls and amazing service each time. This place is my favorite sushi place in chandler. They offer unique specialty rolls that are pretty delicious tasting. The service is great as well, the owners are super nice and friendly!
google avatar

Darya S.

Yelp
The quality of the sushi here was laughable. Got seaweed salad, fried tofu, spicy salmon roll, rocky roll, and McQueen roll. The spicy tuna was goopy. The salmon was so fishy. The rolls were majorly made up of rice. The seaweed salad was the size of half of a fist, but cost $7, the most expensive I've ever seen it. The rolls were bland and didn't even taste like sushi. The tofu was tasteless (how do you mess up fried tofu?). Overall, was so overpriced for what you're getting. Not worth the drive for me.

Yelp
BEST PLACE. Delicious sushi, family run business, clean, fast, pleasant atmosphere. Rolls and fish are always fresh and on-point. I live across the street and come all the time.

Yelp
Okay okay, let's just say it... I will be coming back Now when you step in, it's not the newest or the most appealing to the eye, maybe a little cluttered with decor on the wall... but trust me! These chefs here are seeping with sushi talent! I could really tell this place is family business that builds a family with their customers. From the reviews I was checking out, it looks like a lot of people who come here are regulars. I can tell you, I'll be a regular here too! Now the service here is wonderful, the woman who was out waiter made sure we understood the menu and was very good at making us feel welcomed, the food also came out very fast! There were so many options for sushi rolls and food to choose from! But I came here for the sushi and so I picked a few rolls that fit my taste. Now each of the rolls had been stuffed with a great amount of fish... this was crazy to me because the price is soo affordable! This has to be the most affordable location I've seen in AZ! Especially for the quality and taste, I am amazed! Side note, miso soup also comes with everything so... even better! Honestly, I don't have any complaints, I love sushi that's affordable and tastes great, so thank you staff, you all are doing great! I definitely will be back with more sushi lovers!

Yelp
I have never experienced service like this before. Terrible, waited 15 min for a table in an empty restaurant, ordered right away and took over 30 min before we even got our soup and it took over an hour before our first roll came out. We only waited because the reviews were so good, figured it must have been a bad night. A fluke even. WORST SUSHI, pretty sure they put mayo in the rice? It was yellow and tangy? We eat sushi and Asian style foods 3-5 times a week and never had rice with a nice yellow cream holding it together. Couldn't stomach the avocado roll because it was tangy... yuck. We left sushi on the table, we are two BIG eaters. We never leave sushi no matter how meh the rolls are. And we couldn't stomach anymore. I'm not sure how anyone has eaten here and recommends it? Hoping it used to be great and now has gone downhill? We waited so long for our food we couldn't go eat at another restaurant on a Monday night, everything was closed. :(

Yelp
My boyfriend and I come every week religiously. This restaurant is fantastic. An extensive sushi menu and friendly, fast service. We always get treated like family whether we are dining in or taking out. I would recommend the tempura vegetables for a starter. As far as rolls go I love a basic fried roll so I get the golden cali. Then we always order 2-3 I Love Salmon rolls, I love that it's topped with thinly sliced lemon. It's the perfect combination of lemon and salmon. I could eat here everyday if I lived closer. We drive over 20 miles to eat here. Always worth it.

Yelp
Sushi San is our go-to sushi place in the East Valley. We have tried a good amount of the other sushi restaurants in the area, and when it comes to sushi, there are a few things I look for. Two of them being consistency and quality. Sushi San's quality is very consistent, and a roll you order on one visit will taste and look the same the next time you visit. There's no variance in what it comes with, and the taste is always great. With sushi, I feel like you can quickly tell if the quality is good. Just by smelling or its appearance, you can tell how they store the fish and care for it. We have yet to visit Sushi San, and the quality is poor. Many times we have visited other restaurants in the East Valley, and on the first visit, it is messy or the fish is going bad. There's always parking available out front, and it's right after the Goodwill and a martial arts studio. I believe Sushi San is family run and they all work hard. Calling in orders is also a very easy process. It's never a long wait, and they provide soy sauce, wasabi, and ginger. Some of our favorites are the Arizona Roll and the Tiger Roll. These are fancier versions of spicy tuna rolls and California rolls.

Dakota C.

Yelp
Amazing sushi! I have been coming to this restaurant for the last 4-5 years at least once a year and what can I say they are one of the best sushi spots I've had in Arizona. Their yellowtail nigiri is phenomenal and tastes fresh. Also got the classic California, beef roll, and dragon roll. I hadn't tried the beef roll before tonight but let me tell you it will definitely be one of my staples although not fish, the beef is very tender and the flavor mix very well. We had ordered another roll but we had taken it off due to how long it had taken to come out. Luckily they had provided us with an extra serving of beef rolls, yellowtail nigiri and even edamame on the house due to the wait and at that point I was full enough to not even care about the roll. Great place for date night, quiet and great for conversation. Would recommend to anyone in town.

Anthony A.

Yelp
Very nice looking sushi place. Service was good and the prices were better than I was expecting but the food seemed very very bland

Yelp
Top rated sushi place in town by far and here's why- They have an A rating from the health department EVERY time they get rated. WHAM. to me that is enough said for a damn sushi place! But if you need more ;) Family owned and operated by a wonderful family whom is top notch and gives great service. I have never been disappointed when I've come here year after year (after so many years now!!) Try them out they have great rolls my favorite is the a.s.u. but, take a look at my pics. . .I've liked them all ;)

Yelp
Food good. Service good. Ambiance good. I guess I haven't written enough to submit a post.

Yelp
This place is a gem. Regardless of the other reviews. The regulars know exactly what to expect when they come. If service is taking too long, you can always walk up to the counter and ask for what you need. No harm, no foul. We came in for dinner. It was a toss up between tacos or sushi and I'm so glad we decided on sushi. I have been coming here on and off for the last 7 years and every single time, I'm never disappointed. Side note, ask for fresh wasabi if your sinuses can handle it. It's exactly like taking a bite of horseradish We ordered: Fried soft shell crab Rocky roll Mountain roll I originally wanted to order the sushi bento box however, they don't offer it Friday- Sunday. Miso soup came and it was still piping hot, flavorful and light. App: Fried soft shell crab was crispy, not greasy and had a good amount of meat. Entrees: Rolls.... Mountain- explains itself, very filling and for tuna and salmon lovers for sure. Cali roll on the bottom and heaping piles of fresh fish on top. Rocky- had spicy tuna and salmon and tuna on the outside. The perfect balance. We received a spicy tuna roll on the house and we had to fight internally to not devour all of it in one sitting. Every single menu item received was fresh, no smell or off taste. Dessert: Watermelon. They will always offer some type of refreshing fruit to end the meal when you dine in and that is what makes this place memorable. We can't wait to make this place our regular sushi spot again despite living in Scottsdale... we are dying to get chopsticks with our name for the wall. Thank you for an amazing dinner!!!

Yelp
Been going to this restaurant for years and the food never disappoints. Its always fresh and flavorful. It's family owned so the staff are friendly, always happy, attentive and caring towards everyone. Inside was intimate and cozy, perfect for a date night. We absolutely love this place.

Yelp
So happy to see this place survived during the pandemic! I did place a few orders during Covid and have been back a few times recently and still get great food and great service!
google avatar

Yelp
Absolutely love this place ! Seems to be family run as it's always the same two people in there. They always joke that we ate so fast which is kind of awkward and makes me feel fat lol. But it's worth going there cause it's good sushi.

Yelp
Wonderful experience and quality each time we go. Originally we went for convenience, but stumbled across a gem.

Yelp
| Review #200 | There were two essentials for my 200th review: First, it would have to be at a place neither my girlfriend nor myself had ever been; second, it would have to be Japanese food. One year ago, we were adventuring in Waikiki and experienced some of the most fantastic Japanese fare imaginable. Arizona is far, far away from the Islands, but surely one of our restaurants could come close, right? An important admission: We had a different place in mind for dinner tonight, but despite the Google report, they were in fact closed. Sushi San was a close second, and with raving reviews on Yelp and Google, we decided to check it out. The interior, as others can attest to, is cozy and near-traditional. Photos of happy patrons adorn the walls, you can sit in the comfy booths or the vibrant sushi bar, and -- for some curious reason -- K-pop was playing on mute from the raised televisions. Our server presented us with menus and a pen and paper for our order. Forgive us, but we did not realize we actually needed to write stuff down; we thought that was for the AYCE option, which we did not go for. Our server only seemed mildly exasperated when we verbalized our order, and she wrote it down in front of us. To be frank, I was not keen on her attitude; for the entirety of our visit she was cold and aloof. The other servers appeared much friendlier. That out of the way, let's move on to the food. | Complimentary Miso Soup | Nice way to start off our dinner. The taste was superb; I could have gone for more tofu, but that's alright. | Seaweed Salad | Simple, light, and bright green. Nothing out of the ordinary to report. | Arizona Roll | Spicy tuna atop a spicy crab and cucumber roll. A good concept, but for a roll named after our state, I'd expect something a lot nicer! The spicy tuna had no texture; it was just globs of kickin' fish that the cucumber did well to cool down. The roll was mushy overall and melted in your mouth, but not in a good way. | Shrimp Tempura Roll | Shrimp tempura, cucumber, avocado, and an eel sauce drizzle. The flavor was good, but like the Arizona roll, there was no texture. It was also cut unevenly; a mild complaint, of course, but it did the roll no favors. | Udon | Sorry, but thumbs way down. One piece of thin shrimp tempura, a decent serving of noodles, underwhelming broth aplenty, and nothing else. Hawaii must have spoiled us with tempura galore and plenty of decorative fixings in our bowls because this display was miserable! | Chicken Yakisoba Noodle | Yakisoba noodles, despite their name, are made from wheat flour. These noodles were heartily seasoned to their credit, loaded with vegetables, and there was a lot of chicken to go around. The problem was that the chicken was bone dry, and -- strange complaint coming from me, I know -- the quantity was just too much. I'm not that concerned about the latter, though; I will use my leftovers for an egg-white omelet tomorrow. | Verdict | I want to assure you, my friends, that for my 200th review, I tried to keep an optimistic attitude all dinner long. However, given the lackluster, borderline-rude service, the disappointing sushi, the even more disappointing udon, and the uninspiring mass of chicken yakisoba noodles, I render a 2-star verdict for Sushi San. A sticker on the door claims that Yelp loves them; tonight, I am left wondering...how so? While the restaurant does not tout itself as Asian fusion, that's essentially what it is; the authenticity is not effectively feigned. I'm not opposed to coming back to try something new, but as more businesses reopen, the likelihood of a sequel to this review is satisfactorily low. I've had better, and I know the Grand Canyon State has better to offer! I will find it. So, although we are not throwing a happy celebration for 200 reviews, let's lob off a couple of zeroes for a 2-star review I enjoyed writing. Perhaps #201 will be better! Godspeed.

Alexis C.

Yelp
An amazing sushi place! Very high quality and friendly staff. Definitely recommend the nigiri!

Paul C.

Yelp
Nice ambience and food was good. We never have to wait for a table. The service was cold and unwelcoming, but the waiter was someone who isn't our norm. Would have been 5 stars if not for the customer service.

Yelp
We went here for a Friday lunch, there were barely anyone. We were welcomed and seated immediately. The place is very cozy, intimate and has a unique decor. They have lot of food options and we were going all over the menu. Finally picked a sushi bento combo of poppers, California roll, phx roll, spicy tuna and a separate salmon roll. We were served hot soup, it was not that good. I have had it before but this wasn't what I expected. The bento box arrived quick and I tried the sushi's and they were all very good but I missed something. It had everything yet lacked the taste. My fav was the phx roll, popper and the California roll. The salmon roll was pretty good too. The quantity is pretty good and I was not able to complete my bento box. The price is average and costed $15 per person. It's a 3.5 place but settling for 3 stars. I do want to visit again and try out other menu options but not any time soon.
google avatar

Sam S.

Yelp
Surprised that this place with great ratings was empty on a Friday night. I really liked the decor. Looks like they have nice chopsticks for regular customers. We ordered enough rolls to warrant it being brought out on a wooden boat. We enjoyed the sushi. I especially liked how they serve the oranges for dessert.

Gail G.

Yelp
This is my favorite sushi restaurant both for eating in or picking up. Always fresh and always good. The atmosphere in the restaurant is quiet and very pleasant. The whole family is involved in the restaurant and they couldn't be nicer. The son and daughter handle most of the serving and counter work while dad does the sushi magic and mom helps take care of the counter and the sushi bar. I love this place and recommend it to all the sushi lovers who want a new place to call their "sushi home".

Maria T.

Yelp
The owners are always super nice. Their sushi and sashimi is yummy along with many of their special rolls like The Darwin or rolls named after customers. My favorite is the Maria roll with just enough heat. If you haven't tried their fresh wasabi please give it a try. I've never seen any other sushi place have it. It has a real kick a little different from wasabi paste. Overall, Sushi San is a great place for lunch or dinner or to celebrate a special occasion. Casual and clean.

James A.

Yelp
Great sushi, great food, cheap drinks, lovely atmosphere, and quick service. Seems to be family owned. You wouldn't know it looking at the storefront in the strip mall. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Came in tonight for the first time. We walk in at 8:05 and immediately are greeted with "we are closing at 9 so order quickly" when the sign says 10. We said "oh we thought you closed at 10" and he goes "yeah we're supposed to but it's 9 tonight." Customer service is a no go so we left.

Maria T.

Yelp
The owners are always super nice. Their sushi and sashimi is yummy and fresh along with many of their special rolls like The Darwin or rolls named after customers. My favorite is the Jim roll with seven types of fish and wrapped in rice paper. If you haven't had their fresh wasabi please give it a try. I've never seen any other sushi place have it. It has a real kick a little different from wasabi paste. Overall, Sushi San is a great place for lunch or dinner or to celebrate a special occasion. Casual and clean.

Yelp
This place is awkward. Atmosphere was uncomfortable. Service was bi-polar. Sushi wasn't very good. No Thanks

Yelp
1st time ever eating here and I got our rolls to go because my pup was with me. Got home and this sushi is bomb. Place was cute too, we'll definitely be back!

Yelp
Great place. The sushi was melt-in-your-mouth good. Wonderful presentation and very good service. Definitely a good place to put on your list.

Yelp
Amazing sushi and the best service. A small place that cares about its customers, every time we come in they bring something special for our kids just because they are awesome.
google avatar

Qtcass K.

Yelp
The restaurant is very cozy and has a pleasant environment. The waitress is very informative and helpful in explaining the menu. I had the Udon noodles with one piece of tempura shrimp, the taste was good but it was too plain. There were no other items in the noodle soup, no vegetables. The portion was about one bag of instant udon noodles. The sushi rolls had way too much rice and the fish was not big enough. The killer roll had a small salmon on top but even a smaller piece of eel inside. One may not even notice that it's there. The most ingredient in the sushi roll is the rice.
google avatar

Yelp
I've been eating here and getting takeout since they opened. I have NEVER had a bad meal. They are welcoming for sure. Every time my wife calls for take out they remember her name and always throw in an extra roll!

Yelp
Excellent Japanese restaurant within walking distance of a few hotels. Fast and friendly service, wide selection of Japanese foods, and great service.
