Where To Eat In The Theater District, According To Ben Platt

"“My favorite cuisine is Japanese food and sushi. So obviously I have to have a staple sushi in the neighborhood. Seki is really delish and really high quality fish. The spicy scallop roll in particular is really me. It's on Restaurant Row, so it doesn't get more convenient. It's like obviously a little bit in the muck, but the inside's pretty tranquil. Anytime I have anyone who's sushi predisposed and we're going to see a show, it's the number one choice. And they tend to always have reservations, which is nice because you don't have to worry about waiting or making your show time.”" - brennan carley

The Best Sushi Spots In Midtown

"If Gari is Owen Wilson, Sushi Seki is Luke Wilson - the younger brother. Different in some respects, but interchangeable at times. You’ll eat inventive pieces of sushi here, some of which are quite similar to those at Gari. This is Seki’s third location, and it’s slicker and newer than Gari’s nearby outpost. It has a few different spaces - a sushi bar, tatami rooms, and a cocktail bar." - hillary reinsberg

NYC Sushi Delivery: Restaurants Still Open During Coronavirus - Eater NY

"Sushi Seki’s Times Square and Chelsea locations are both delivering an extensive menu via Postmates. The sushi bar menu offers a range of sushi and sashimi meals, with the $52 seki set including nine pieces and a roll. A la carte sushi includes Seki’s signatures, like torched tomato with salmon, and kanpachi jalapeno." - Melissa Kravitz Hoeffner, Eater Staff

I absolutely adore a good OMAKASE dinner date, and this place is a real elevated treat. We got a chance to sample both their Omakase experience and several appetizers. The sushi bar is beautiful, highly recommend sitting where the action is. We loved exploring the menu, here were some of our favorite dishes/courses: 🥩 SKEWERED A5 WAGYU BEEF 🐟 HAMACHI JALAPENO 🍣 Fatty Salmon with Tomato 🔥 Tempura Uni 🐟 Fatty Tuna 🥚 Salmon with roe and and quail egg

Google
This place was delicious! Definitely order the medium fatty tuna! The tempura was light and had good texture and flavor (even had Japanese mushrooms). Each piece of sushi presented to us was filled with flavor. There wasn't a single piece I would not try again. The staff was very kind and helpful as well with our food selections. I really enjoyed my evening here and it hit the spot for our sushi fix. The quality of the ingredients reminded me of the sushi I had in Japan. My one regret is not trying dessert here!

I’m coming here at least every month. Amazing place with Michelin sticker on the door. Deserve all credits. Take a seat at the bar to be served by one of 3 chefs. Order Omakase. Salmon with fried tomato is the must! No line, no reservation. Just hidden gem of 46 st in TimesSquare.

Sushi Seki is definitely a great time. You can tell this place is quality. From the sushi, to the atmosphere and the service, this place gives you exactly what you need - a phenomenal restaurant. I loved every dish I had here and the food definitely stood out to me being very fresh and of the highest quality. I would definitely recommend it!

BEST SUSHI IN NYC!! This is my all time favorite sushi restaurant and let’s face it, it is not cheap but it is so worth the money. From the ambiance to the service everything around the food is amazing. And let’s talk about the sushi, we always get the chefs menu, it is expensive but it is the best sushi I’ve ever try, it is imposible to even choose a favorite piece. The fish is absolutely gorgeous, the rice is just how sushi rice needs.

Sushi Seki on Restaurant Row in The Theatre District in Manhattan is one of several locations they’ve got around the city. Sushi Seki is LOVELY. BEAUTIFUL, large, marble sushi counter where you can sit to eat and order off the menu, OR you can eat omakase. In these “post Covid” days Sushi Seki is quiet. Their business, like a lot of other spots, has not rebounded to what it was because NYC just doesn’t have the tourist traffic it had in The Before Times and their lunch crowd was all those workers who were sent to work from home and then never came back to all those high-rise office buildings in Midtown. Because of all that the vibe is CHILL. Which I prefer. I strongly dislike the crazed, pre theatre crowds (and I was getting in when they opened at 5pm because I had a 7pm curtain a few blocks away). You do need to understand that when I sit down at a sushi bar for Omakase I am going to “talk shop” with the chefs and servers and make friends (most likely) and we’re all going to end up following each other on social media. That’s how I roll! And because I am “cook/owner” of my own little restaurant in Vermont, I know and understand The Actual Grind and ALL the ins and outs of this business and all that has gone down with Covid. So! My experience is likely to be different from anyone who is not in The Restaurant Industry. My experience at Sushi Seki was Top Notch, 5 Stars. Since I wanted Omakase they moved down to the end of the bar to sit in front of their top sushi chef, who is a veteran of the NYC sushi scene (which is VERY much changed in the past few years - and ALL for the better for we diners!). My sushi chef was WONDERFUL, my server was great AND when I asked her to choose a sake for me (Jummai Gingo, but dry) she picked me out something PERFECT! NYC is currently the capital of the entire world for Omakase and CRAZY GOOD Omakase spots are popping up everywhere in The City. Sushi Seki has a team of chefs behind their sushi counter, but not all are master chefs. My advice: If you want to eat Omakase here request to sit in front of the master chef…Chel. However, if you have not eaten Omakase in many places, you will have a GREAT experience no matter who you sit in front of. There is a set that everyone can do and is very good. Because it’s pretty chill in Sushi Seki you don’t necessarily need a reservation. But! If you want Omakase make that reservation so you’re seated at the correct spot at the bar! I ate the full Omakase set, but since I hadn’t eaten in 24hrs (in preparation) and I still had some time I had him keep going! And probably had another 5 pieces beyond the set. ALL were excellent and followed by a wonderful green tea (or matcha?) creme brulee. Which was included as my dessert. The next day I wound up going to a later show than I had planned and had some time on my hands and so went back to Sushi Seki and sat at the bar. I ate the full set again, but prepared by a different sushi chef. And then he made me a salmon skin hand roll. His suggestion. Pure. Genius. I LOVE salmon skin. It was FANTASTIC. Crunchy and delicious and PERFECTION.

Google
An impeccable dining experience. A week later, I am still thinking about it! I got the Seki special platter, and every piece was perfect despite the time I took to enjoy every bite. Rie was such a caring and knowledgeable server and suggested some great sakes and a shochu cocktail. It was truly an oasis of care in the chaos of Times Square!

Yelp
First time visitor to New York and planned a Saturday evening to go to time square and found Sushi Seki on Yelp. We tried a bit of everything and there were no complaints. Delicious and fresh sushi, wonderful saki and staff was very welcoming (as a Southerner I appreciated that LOL). Minutes walk to Times Square.

Yelp
TLDR: Sushi Seki is a great sushi bar if you're in the Theater District. The omakase is a great way to try some more creative nigiri pieces. Definitely try the salmon and tomato piece, the tuna with tofu sauce and don't leave without the spicy scallop handroll. We were fortunate to be able to served by Chef Seki himself. We've eaten at the UES Seki previously and I would say the omakase experience was more enjoyable here. Chef was super friendly and gave us a nice tasting of modern style nigiri. Many of the pieces are dressed with different sauces but the sauces here really add a different flavor profile. Many of the newer omakase spots use a lot of heavy toppings and flavors but often they don't do much to add to the piece itself. I can't remember all the different combinations but rather than topping nigiri with those wet truffle slices, the sauces he uses lend a welcome touch of acidity to balance out the natural fatty flavors of the fish. We got to try a lot of different things other than the classic Seki salmon/tomato, tuna/tofu, etc. We finished with a seared piece of kama toro and the crowd pleaser, spicy scallop handroll. If you're looking for quality omakase in this area, Sushi Seki is a good choice.

Yelp
What a great little place. It wasn't overly loud and the service was excellent. My husband is not a fan of sushi and there were several options for him. He had the miso cod. I had the tofu appetizer, edamame, the waygu skewer with truffle salt. All were absolutely excellent with the steak being the big winner. I also ordered pieces of salmon and egg sushi. Best I have ever eaten. I highly recommend and will be back when I'm back in town.

Yelp
Perfect location with some of the best sashimi we ever had. Beautiful setting, great service and around the corner from broadway shows. Will definitely repeat when we visit NY again

Yelp
For something light and delicious Japanese fare but fast and efficient service, this place is a place to go. Though the prices are on the expensive side, the taste of their food made it worthwhile. Their sushi are fresh and didn't taste fish. Their udon soup is succulent and mouth watering. They have a cocktail called Ryo and it was sweet and divine. Don't remember what's actually in it. The restaurant also have a tasting menu for $125. We opted not since the place closes at 10:30pm and we got there late. Come early and enjoy the pleasant ambiance it exudes.

Yelp
Fav sushi EVER. Like EVER. I've tried so many. But this place goes above and beyond. The staff. The ambiance. The FOOD OMG! So fresh. So delicious. Be sure to try the rock shrimp. The wagyu beef screwer ( it's a small Portion but worth it) and the seared tomato nigiri OMG. Thank me later.

Agnes S.

Yelp
Fantastic omakase. Extremely fresh scallop and Japanese shrimp from the onigiri were the highlights along with the fatty tuna. Steamed octopus with a delicious sauce was delectable too. Really everything was fantastic. My son ordered yaki tori and tempura udon and fully enjoyed both and also enjoyed a bite of everything from my omakase especially the wagyu skewer - like butter summer Friday night on the early side was not too busy and service was fantastic too. Green tea creme brûlée was a pleasant surprise too. Yuzu cocktail was refreshing and not super sweet and got me in a good mood really fast too. Overall a delightful experience and I cannot wait to come back again.

Yelp
Stopped by here on accident after a dance class. I was so hungry and they have a pretty outdoor look that caught my eye. When I saw a reasonably priced sushi dinner I was sold! The sushi chef was Japanese, the fish was fresh honestly on par with what I ate when I lived In Japan!

Yelp
Had a pre theater dinner at this restaurant. Food was good, ambience was good and the waitstaff were good. They even asked if we had a theater show to get to and made sure we got our meals with plenty of time to relax and enjoy. I had the chicken yakitori appetizer which was beautifully cooked and had just the right amount of sauce, plus a green salad which was nicely done. Others in my group had sushi which they enjoyed and soba which was also good.

Yelp
I wanted sushi in a place away from Times Square and chose the perfect spot! I sat at the bar and received star treatment. They made each sushi piece in front of me with pride. The pieces were unique to this location. I especially loved the salmon with tomato maki. They offered me complementary hot tea as well. Everything was delicious and the atmosphere was relaxing after a long travel day. I highly recommend this spot.

Yelp
Service can be hit or miss, but staff is very nice. It seems that the staff is not very experienced. The ambiance is nice without the loud music or dark lighting. If you are more of a traditional sushi lover (i.e. love raw fish with sushi rice), do not order Seki style platter. It includes cooked fish and some other stuff I didn't care for. For the similar price, you can find better and more fulfilling sushi elsewhere. Seki's Omakase doesn't have a price - it depends on the chef's selection which means you can be surprised at the very end... Again, you can enjoy far better Omakase elsewhere.

Yelp
Nice ambience but rather bright, so it's not romantic. The food is delicious! We especially loved the beef negimaki and miso yuzu cod

Yelp
We are lucky not to look at the Yelp review before trying this restaurant, or else, we wont even try to step a foot. We passed by the area half full, and wanted small bites late at night. We ended up ordering the 9 pc special sushi and black cod, eggplant and the diced beef. All were goooddd especially the tuna and salmon. Service was attentive, even to the smallest details. The food came a little late, and they gave us complimentary edamame.. tried the mochi ice cream and were perfect to end the night. Yum! Recommended!!!

Yelp
Nice sushi place in Manhattan. Noticeably many wait staffs helping decently. We waited at bar side a bit, even with our reservation, amazed about their sake collection. Got a table right away from sushi bar. Food was good. Service also.

Yelp
This was probably the least worth it of all the high-end sushi restaurants I've been to; even with the Time Out Table for Two voucher, this was pretty pricey. It was a fairly mediocre meal for the price point even with 50% off; there's no way I would actually dine there at full-price. The omakases/kaisekis were actually not included in the Time Out, which was a bit sad because that might have been more worth trying (and coming back for). We got some sushi sets and a few appetizers. None of the fish stood out to us, and we would have preferred to dine at Sugarfish for the better quality and lower price point. I had just eaten at Sushi by Bou recently, too, and this was just disappointing. Raymond would probably give this 2 stars because he didn't like anything that we got; I'm giving it 3 because I did actually really enjoy the matcha uni soba. It was really creative and well-executed. I would actually come back for this; the flavors were really on-point and the soba was very refreshing.

Yelp
Sushi lovers, walk past and don't look back. Sushi Seki Times Square feels exactly like what you'd expect from a Times Square sushi restaurant (no offense, Suzuki and Bou). The crowd is skewed towards families and tourists, and about over a third of the tables had (squealing) children under the age of 10. Chopsticks were cheap and wooden (the sort you break apart yourself) and awkwardly held by patrons like a one-handed flute. The service was basically nonexistent except to take our order (but only after flagging someone down) and when it came time to pay the bill. But really, it all came down to the sushi, which was COMICALLY bad. My date and I each ordered the sushi special which had an assortment of 9 nigiri pieces and a spicy tuna roll. I've done the omakase at Sushi of Gari (not a huge fan of Gari overall either for the execution and ingredient quality per price point) so I had vaguely medium-low expectations that somehow still failed to be met. We started out with the eggplant piece (?!) which just felt like an unnecessary filler item for a $49 sushi plate. Next, we tried the cooked fish piece which was dry, underseasoned, and completely detached from the rice. The other raw fish pieces ranged from forgettable to just plain bad, and had the same quality as a corner deli. Even the general quality of the nigiri assembly (as in, how well did it all hold together and how well seasoned/textured was the rice) felt like whoever had made it had simply given up. The torched tomato salmon looks like the sad stepsister of its Gari original. The Gari piece tasted like a burst of Italian comfort food but the Sushi Seki rendition tasted just how it looked - like a slightly burnt raw tomato. The squid had a dab of coyingly sweet sauce that paired super weirdly with the glob of wasabi hidden underneath. It was a double punch of unappetizing flavors combined together. In general, the chef that night was extremely heavy handed with wasabi. I've been building up my wasabi tolerance since I was a child, but some pieces had so much that I got tears in my eyes and had to pause to regain my breath. There was so much wasabi in one piece in particular (the tofu tuna) that I could actually feel myself chewing through it. The amount of wasabi was more than the amount of toothpaste I use when I brush my teeth. The two sushi specials weren't enough for us so we also ordered a tuna scallion roll. The rice to fish ratio wasn't visually great, but even more importantly, all I tasted was the rice and seaweed. It was $12 (MP) for 6 pieces that probably equaled to maybe 1/2 a piece of tuna sashimi. Long story short... I had a "Time Out Table for Two" coupon that got me 50% off my bill and I still feel like I overpaid by 2x.

Yelp
I heard good things from a friend, however my experience was bad. Service slow inattentive and forgetful of order, not once but multiple times. Ordering drinks waitress walked away before my date could order. After about 10 minutes she came back we ordered everything because by then we were hungry. They brought edamame... we didn't order it, but were hungry so we ate it. Spicy tuna and miso average. That is what I gauge sushi bars on. Then seared salmon and cucumber roll. I called the waitress back.... I ordered seared tuna. Sorry she's took it away then brought it back. Much later she brought out a stone cold seared tuna. It looked like and tasted like it came out of the refrigerator. We left after that.

Yelp
Love sushi seki, come here often and service is great along with the sake and the rolls! Shrimp tempura is good maybe not the best but I love getting the tuna roll and the diced steak is a special that you should defs get

Yelp
Sushi Seki's outpost on Restaurant Row (46th street, next to theaters) is something I've been looking to try, ever since a lady to my left told me raved it at a nail salon (ask privately). We went this past week, and the experience was decidedly mixed. In the spectrum of NYC sushi restaurants, Seki is a notch below Morimoto, definitely not Masa-type Michelin, but above your typical sushi "joint." My friend compared it to Blue Ribbon, which sounds about right, at least in intent. Food was generally great, though hit the "ceiling" I'd long associated with sushi until I went to some Michelin place in Bangkok (Ginza Sushi ichi m) this past winter and seen the true "heights" to which it could go. I would definitely just go with a sushi or sashimi deluxe combo, where you get a bunch of stuff. We also had the soft crab in egg thing, which was amazing, tempura, and toro. Unfortunately, had to deduct a couple stars off for sloppy logistics: a hair was in one of our dishes, and a lot of things just didn't seem to go right, like drinks we didn't order getting delivered and so forth. As I always say, you need a STRUCTURAL analysis in these kinds of situations rather than one that blames the staff right off the bat. I got the feeling those logistics were a bit haywire. The verdict? Not a bad place, but you can get more for your $$$ at other places.

Yelp
Sushi Seki wasn't bad. That's probably the most generous compliment I'm able to give about the whole experience - it wasn't bad. I went with a large party (8 of us) and we had a private room, where we dined in true Japanese style - with a low table sitting on pillows on the floor. The room itself was awesome, decorated simply but was very classy, and having the private room allowed us to dine without being interrupted or distracted by other diners. We all ordered the omakase - I believe it was around $120 per person after tax/tip. The plates flowed out from the kitchen and the sushi/sashimi was creative and varied. The pieces ranged from simple/traditional to slightly Americanized. Having the fusion was a nice spin on some of the more traditional omakase I've done. However, the fish was just not up to par with other omakase in the same price range. I'd highly recommend Sushi Dojo if you're looking for good quality, fairly affordable omakase. The sake was flowing abundantly and the recommendation for the dry bottle we had was excellent. Service was minimal but efficient - to be expected with omakase. Our dessert course (and I can't remember what we ordered - I believe it was something similar to fried ice cream) was the star of the show - it was delicious. Unfortunately, we didn't come to Sushi Seki for a decent dessert. I wouldn't necessarily be opposed to going back if someone insisted, but as long as it's my choice I'd much rather go to Dojo.

Yelp
I really wanted to like Sushi Seki as I've heard good things about the UES location. I ordered delivery via the caviar app. The spicy tuna roll and shrimp tempura roll were disgusting and not fresh. Both my fiancé and I agreed we couldn't it eat. For context, my go to sushi places are sugarfish and morimoto. This is the quality I am used to. I requested my money back from caviar and they told me I had to call Sushi Seki. The woman on the phone was fighting with me saying no one has ever had an issue today with the food. She was also trying to explain to me what a spicy tuna roll was. I'm pretty sure I know what it is and I've eaten as some of the best sushi places in nyc so I'm not a novice. After arguing I finally got my money back and ordered pizza for dinner. Please do not come here.

Yelp
A few years ago I would have awarded this Times Square sushi outpost of Seki four stars. Last evening though, our dining experience unfortunately validated some of the mediocre reviews of late. The fish is still fresh and prepared with care and expert knife skills. Full disclosure I typically order sashimi and a hand roll or two only as the basis for my reviews so if you're looking for some feedback on creative Americanized rolls this won't help you. We started with the green salad just because my husband and I needed to get some daily greens in. The ginger dressing was much more refined than the clunky bright orange more typical ones you find in some places. But the greens themselves were kind of meh. We had the hamachi jalapeño sashimi appetizer which was quite good. It didn't wow on presentation though. We ordered king salmon, Uni, chu toro, red snapper sashimi and a few hand rolls (yellowtail and scallion and toro) The fish tasted yummy and the hand rolls are really a highlight. Very authentic. The service was just quite disorganized and though they seem to try hard it just misses the mark. And sometimes mediocre service doesn't bother me but for the prices this place charges and the fact that they knew we were dining pre theatre (and had over 1 1/2 hours for dinner) I expect much more. I remember this place being much better years back. Not sure I would go back anytime soon. The competition for sushi in NYC means there are many more fish in the sea!

Yelp
Seki is now one of my favorite places to eat in NYC. My first visit here was memorable to say the least. Upon arrival, the staff were all very welcoming and the interior decor was beautiful. My boyfriend and I decided to try omakase sushi for the first time and it was a worthwhile experience. "Omakase" is a style of sushi where the chefs create and serve a unique menu however they like- We each got 4 plates of different sushi/sashimi (16 pieces per person). Everything was PHENOMENAL and the plates were prepared surprisingly fast. Most fish is imported from Japan and literally melts in your mouth. Seki's omakase is also topped off with a dessert, which was a creamy and flavorful matcha creme brûlée for us. Omakase can be fairly pricey across sushi restaurants- the one here was about $120 per person (but ranges from $95 & up), which is a pretty good deal compared to other sushi places. If this is out of your budget, their regular menu is very reasonably priced and delicious as well. Seki also has a really cool cocktail menu. My boyfriend tried a matcha cocktail and I got the "Myoga" which had ginger beer and vodka- both were really smooth and refreshing and not too expensive ($14 each). Overall, I would highly recommend coming here- whether it's for the regular menu items or the omakase... You really can't go wrong!

Yelp
I was pleasantly surprised by this authentic and beautiful restaurant in Times Square. I was skeptical that it would be a tourist trap because of the location but the location was actually pretty quiet and serene. My gf and I ordered the omakase and wow was I amazed. You could tell the sushi chefs were highly skilled and attentive to detail. Each sushi had an authentic Japanese taste but I hadn't seen many of the pieces elsewhere. One sushi piece was made up of roughly 20 tiny raw peeled shrimp. Think tiny amaebi combined together. Another dish was a red salmon with a type of roe that I had not tasted in the past. It wasn't as large or salty as ikura but it was larger, sweeter and darker than tobiko. A third sushi was salmon with a crispy roasted tomato on top but the tomato was roasted in the most fragrant soy sauce I've ever smelled. Mind blown... I'm really surprised this restaurant isn't rated higher. Grab a reservation while you can!

Yelp
Great meal, delicious sushi, friendly service and beautiful food presentation! It was getting later on a Saturday night and I was getting hungrier and saw this restaurant on the way back to my hotel. This was a sushi restaurant, in fact, that was highly recommended by my nearby hotel. Came in freezing and quickly ordered some clear soup with seafood. It was different than I was expecting, but warm and tasty. Had a good flavor and the seafood tasted good. Then ordered two sushi rolls -- Yellowtail with Scallions and Shrimp Tempura. Not knowing how big or filling, I decided to get just the two. The Yellowtail with Scallions was really good, a little bit different as I've never had one with scallions. Both rolls were good and pretty filling. While waiting for my extremely efficient waitress to return, I thought about ordering a third roll, but when she suggested dessert, I opted for that route. I got a 3 pc mochi ice cream - belgian chocolate, passion fruits and matcha green tea. She also brought me a cup of wonderful green tea. Delicious, light and a nice way to end my meal. Overall for what I got it was reasonable, especially for being in New York and a central location. Everything was great from food to service to friendly sushi chefs as I sat at the sushi bar. Highly recommend a visit here, especially if you have a yen for sushi and are looking for a good place to eat.

Yelp
My friend and I went to omakase the specials 20 years anniversary yesterday. The food was horrible (they served cold meatballs worse taste than Costco) and the serving speed was as slow as snail. 280 per person for the worst experiencing. What a ripoff! Strongly against anyone goes there. The taste is worse than super market Japanese food.

Yelp
Good sushi: had a few items of the menu, the service was impeccable. Lily was my server however Lucas (Latin guy) went over and beyond and made sure I was content, My glass was always full because of him.

Yelp
Just revisited after a few months of not getting to any theatre shows. Had yet another consistently good experience. I enjoyed all my favorites: maguro/avocado appetizer, miso soup, sushi: toro taku, crispy rice, chopped eel, Kyoto, tuna tofu. Tried for the first time the crab miso and hotate appetizer, it wasn't bad, but not my favorite. A little too heavy on crispy rice and truffle oil flavor. Enough to share though. Service and overall quality as wonderful as ever. Keeps me coming back over and over.

Yelp
Do you like beautiful, overpriced date spots? Then you will loooove this place! Me, I like to have my cake AND eat it too, so despite having come here at least 3 times (never of my choosing), I can't say I'd really recommend it. The menu is mostly typical sushi fare, but at least several dollars more than other spots in the neighborhood without much difference in quality. The maki options themselves are rather lacking, and though I appreciate the trend toward straightforward, non-fusion rolls, they're still not that special. The best part about the menu is the drink selection. They're on the more creative side with options like the Sakura and Yuzu served in unique square cups like you would have in Japan. However, you'll pay about $16 for an $11 quantity at best, so keep that in mind.

Yelp
The sushi rolls are delicious; however they are small in stature about the size of a quarter. The ambience is appealing. The staff is very attentive. But please note that if you do not have a party of six or more you will not be seated in the main dining room. Overall I will give it four stars because the sushi is impeccable despite the small size. Please put this place on your list if you are in New York City.

Yelp
With the demise of the old Firebird joint in restaurant row, I was eager to see who would come and take over the copious amount of real estate left behind by the Russian stalwart. In comes Sushi Seki .. in all of its east side glory in the Theater District. To be honest, I was a bit skeptical. Why open a new Japanese restaurant on a street that's full of high level, established names (Sushi of Gari 46) .. new entrants (Saki Bar Hagi 46) and pretenders (Osha)? Clearly the owners feel there is demand for high-quality Japanese food here, and for the most part Sushi Seki does not disappoint. The new digs are a big departure from the days when we saw the ornate furnishings of the old Firebird restaurant that made diners think they were taking a trip back in time to the days when the Czar ruled Russia. Now it's been totally overhauled with the sublime, neo-Japanese decor that defines to many new restaurants. The overall experience - from the huge bar featuring their highly touted cocktails - to the spacious seats - to the simple/clean sushi bar in the back - it all screams modern chic. I decided to give the pre-theater menu a try. For $42 dollars they offered a simple four course menu with a few choices for each part of the meal. I opted to start with the agedashi tofu, which featured two small pieces of finely fried tofu paired with some warm tempura sauce. It was tasty and simple. I followed that up with the snow pea salad with house ginger dressing. This dish was fine and the fresh, crispy snow peas really paired well with the savory dressing. My only qualm was how the dish could have been better had the peas been mixed more with the dressing to accentuate the flavor, but this dish should suit those with light palates very well. Since I was in the mood for protein, I opted for the beef teriyaki as my entree. The quality of the meat was fine, but I was expecting a better cut. The meat was a bit more rubbery in texture than I expected and the sauce was also underwhelming. Given the type of dish it was .. I was expecting the flavors to stand out more. In this case, it didn't feel like the meat and sauce worked in harmony. The meal wrapped up with my order of red bean panna cotta. I enjoyed this dish a lot as the sublime custard paired well with the rich red bean flavor. Again, this could have used a bit more red bean to help create more harmony between the milk and azuki flavors but for the most part it was delightful. One theme seemed to resonate with me based on my initial experience. While the quality of the ingredients and the flavors were there - there seemed to be instances when the flavors didn't jive completely and certain elements that should have been more robust or pronounced didn't materialize. The service here was polite but spotty. At times I had multiple come and ask me the same question. Other times I had to flag people for attention. It didn't seem very even to me but given it's a new restaurant these things may take time to shake out. I will come back to try more of their menu (and sushi) on a future visit, but for now I still have to give the edge to Sushi of Gari 46 as the best Japanese joint on restaurant row. But I do think this place has a lot of potential to take the top spot if they work on some nuances. PS - I did also get to try their tempura udon. It was good but not remarkable. The soup base was the best part of that dish ... being light and mostly flavorful.

Yelp
I used to go to the UES location - especially for omakase - but it's always so crowded and difficult to get a reservation at. Didn't realize SS opened an HK location. Same great quality and what feels like twice the space, including a second floor. Everything was fresh and tasty - sushi and cooked foods included. The spicy scallop roll and black miso cod were my favorite. And at a fraction of Gari/Nobu prices. Come!! I don't want this place to close.

Yelp
I agree with the person who called this a "sushi tourist trap." One star for such poor service at Sushi Seki that we had to leave. We made a reservation for a weeknight--we wanted a special dinner before going to a performance. The restaurant appeared to be about half full; it wasn't very busy. The waiter had a very rude attitude, as though none of his customers were deserving of being there. He was very unwelcoming. He asked us if we wanted still or sparking water, and we said, "still." When he came back with a huge bottle of artisanal water, we were surprised, as everyone else around us had tap water. We were apologetic and said we didn't ask for bottled water; tap water would be just fine. But his behavior was so strange! He said, "You SAID you wanted still." Then proceeded to break the seal on the bottle anyway, and pour it into our glasses. He slammed the bottle onto the table and walked away. (Again, no other tables had bottled water. I think he got mad when we declined to be upsold and decided to try to upsell us anyway.) At this point, we are not enthusiastic about paying top prices for a subpar dining experience. We were excited to try this restaurant. However, Sushi Seki's staff seemed bent on milking every penny out of us. We felt very uncomfortable and so we simply left without ordering.

Yelp
This is a tourist sushi trap. We had wanted to try another restaurant across the street but it was too meat protein heavy. We were too hungry to really look elsewhere. We should have looked at the Yelp reviews beforehand. We have eaten a lot of good sushi from our travels and this one was a sad default out of laziness. The tuna in the maguri avocado appetizer was not fresh and rather pungent in taste. The sushi rice was too wet and barely hung to the spicy tuna roll. The shrimp tempura roll was completely unmemorable. The best part of the meal was the hot towel service and snow pea salad. Don't waste your time especially if you found this review.

Yelp
This review is for the Chef Seki's Mini Omakase special at a set price of $55 which includes a 6-piece Nigiri Omakasa plus 1-hand roll and mini soba/udon noodles. This was my first time here with my best friend and we were lucky enough to be among the first people to arrive for the Chef Seki Mini Omakase special. The dinner setting was exceptionally aesthetic and the service here was above excellent. The entire staff made you feel right at home. Each sushi piece was also created right in front of you and the taste and flavor of each piece was out-of-this-world! I have never been so amazed by all the flavors hitting your taste buds at once. It was an extremely joyful experience and one which my bestfriend and I will certainly return to! Next time, we plan on trying the bigger omakase option and perhaps even become regulars at this place. Highly recommend this place for anyone who loves high quality sushi.

Yelp
This place was Way overpriced for super small portions. Food with no fravor. This place should be renamed sushi sucky. But seriously, don't order the appetizers. Ridiculous small portions. The tofu was like serious mush and completely bland. The pine mushrooms were 4 tiny mushroom quarter pieces for $22. The sushi itself was ok.

Yelp
(This review had been forgotten and collecting dust as a draft for a month but...) Another Restaurant Week (Winter 2017) review! My friend and I came during lunch time since the RW menu only had a slight difference between the lunch and dinner menus. When I walked up to the restaurant, it reminded me of when I was in Kyoto, Japan. Inviting exterior? Check. First impressions are important. The interior decor was just as pleasant and only bolstered my opinion and expectations. Our reservation was within 30 minutes of their closing time but the staff was still extremely friendly and accommodating. The food? Like everything else so far, it got a thumbs up from me. I wasn't able to fully enjoy everything because of a headache though. Appetizers aside, I just ordered the tempura. It was good but it was just tempura. My friend's RW sushi platter looked great. It sounded like she really also enjoyed the sushi. I also ordered uni sushi and ootoro sashimi (minimum 2 orders for sashimi) a la carte. The uni was fine but the ootoro? I expected better for $16/piece fish. It was kind of stringy and more lean than fatty. I was a little bummed by the sashimi, but the star of the meal made it all better. The matcha crème brûlée was everything. The presentation was perfect and it tasted amazing. I'd come here again just for dessert! Heaven. I'd describe it, but I think leaving a picture here will suffice.

Yelp
Big disappointment. Nothing tasted particularly fresh. Rolls were a bit sad and lifeless. Overhead lights burnt out and left with an ambiance that matched the food. And the chairs. Didn't anyone sit in them before buying them. Maybe the most uncomfortable chairs in history. Daughter's birthday and was hoping for something really good...

Yelp
Like john Malkovich in "Rounders:" Unsatisfied. It's my fault for eating sushi in the theater district. But Blue Ribbon was fully booked. Firstly, small portions, high price. Fish was not great quality. Actually tasteless. Even the wasabi and ginger were watery. Ambiance: Zero. Japanese-ish design but the Feng Shui is way off. The service was quick and attentive. Nice lady. But I suggest you find an alternative.

Yelp
Needed a quickish meal before an 8pm Saturday night show and my friend wanted to check Sushi Seki out. Ambiance of the place was wonderful. Loved the sleek modern design and how uncramped the restaurant felt compared to a large number of restaurants in NYC. We decided to split a few rolls and go with the eel roll with avocado, fried oyster roll, California roll, Ebi and some edamame for an appetizer. All the food came out fresh tasting and was quite delicious. Would highly recommend the fried oyster roll. Only thing that maybe needed improvement was the number of servers. Appeared to only be one guy for our area and he seemed overly busy. However, he was super friendly and really excited about the menu, which in turn made us excited about the food. I probably won't be a frequent visitor based on the price, however I'd recommend it to someone who is looking for a classier sushi experience before a show.

Yelp
Simply the best sushi I've ever had in my life. I had the omakasi and it was 12 perfect bites so I extended it to 16 and was super happy I did. It was damn near an emotional experience. Up until this point most favorite sushi was in Studio City Los Angeles, a little place known as Nozawa sushi. After Mr. Nozawa retired he licensed his name to a chain called Sugarfish which is still very good. I compared every sushi bite I've ever had to this place. Sushi Seki was better.

Yelp
We were looking forward to a nice meal before theatre, however the service somewhat ruined that opportunity. Even with a reservation we weren't seated for 35 minutes, but we did watch four other parties get seated before us. The hostesses finally offered to seat us in a dark room alone, instead of at the table we reserved. Finally, we were offered to sit at the bar (despite having made a reservation for a table specifically). No one took our order for 20 minutes. But the other 4 tables that got seated before us seemed to enjoy themselves. They then moved us to a table in the back, where we finally got to eat. The food was okay, but the service really hurt our experience. And for the price, you would think the sushi would be more interesting. Ultimately the price of the food does not match the taste, and the service leaves you feeling ignored.

Yelp
I can't believe they charge me twice on the same bill. You have to double check your credit statement at the month end. I had dinner in May, the bill was $151.34, I left 18% tips to make it total $180.00. They charged me $180 again. What an obvious mistake. I just can't believe that happened.

Yelp
Been To This Sushi Restaurant From The First Week They Open Till Now. They Have A Great Happy Hour! 2 For One And Amazing Sushi. They Just Need To Have The Bartenders Improve On Service! Meaning? Whet Asking Them Question. They Acted As If They Don't Hear You. And When You Can Finally Stopped To Ask Them Some They Will Answer While Walking Away From You???? As A Normal Person You Would Stop To Hear What The Guest Are Asking For No? That's Where This Place Needs To Improve In! Otherwise It's Would Be Amazing

Yelp
Relatively new Japanese resto on Restaurant Row. Shared a carafe of dry sake, seaweed salad, shumai and the sushi sashimi. Also ordered 2 sashimi and 2 sushi by the piece as well as the Sakura cocktail. Ended with the matcha creme brulee. Overall a pleasant experience in a serene setting. Fresh fish, delicious sake/cocktails and great service. I think the sushi sashimi pricing should be lowered as the content did not justify the amount though.

Yelp
I have ate at the sushi Seki on the upper east side and the quality here was much worse for the same price. Maybe you just shouldn't order takeout from here because the portion sizes just seemed so much smaller. I got the green salad, which was lacking on the amount of lettuce and the dressing seemed a bit watery. I also got the tuna massage and the portion size was so small. I then got the spicy tuna with crispy rice, which was very good, but wouldn't spend $6 on this again (for 1 piece). I also got the spicy tuna and salmon avocado roll but it smelled a bit fishy. I wouldn't recommend this location.

Yelp
Would've been 5+ stars if they would've given us a heads up about the water (which you have to pay for). Otherwise, best sushi we've had - would recommend the tomato and salmon, spicy scallops, and lobster tempura!
