Sushi Seki's outpost on Restaurant Row (46th street, next to theaters) is something I've been looking to try, ever since a lady to my left told me raved it at a nail salon (ask privately). We went this past week, and the experience was decidedly mixed.
In the spectrum of NYC sushi restaurants, Seki is a notch below Morimoto, definitely not Masa-type Michelin, but above your typical sushi "joint." My friend compared it to Blue Ribbon, which sounds about right, at least in intent.
Food was generally great, though hit the "ceiling" I'd long associated with sushi until I went to some Michelin place in Bangkok (Ginza Sushi ichi m) this past winter and seen the true "heights" to which it could go. I would definitely just go with a sushi or sashimi deluxe combo, where you get a bunch of stuff. We also had the soft crab in egg thing, which was amazing, tempura, and toro.
Unfortunately, had to deduct a couple stars off for sloppy logistics: a hair was in one of our dishes, and a lot of things just didn't seem to go right, like drinks we didn't order getting delivered and so forth. As I always say, you need a STRUCTURAL analysis in these kinds of situations rather than one that blames the staff right off the bat. I got the feeling those logistics were a bit haywire. The verdict? Not a bad place, but you can get more for your $$$ at other places.
