Tokyo Restaurant Sushi Zanmai Is Opening Its First U.S. Location in Los Angeles | Eater LA

"Opened in 2001 by Kiyoshi Kimura in Tokyo’s Tsukiji fish market in response to falling traffic there, the original restaurant quickly set itself apart by operating 24 hours, feeding hungry locals and tourists looking for sushi at all hours of the day and night. Since the first location, the chain has expanded to dozens of locations across Japan, becoming well known for reasonably-priced sushi and a smiling statue of Kimura that welcomes guests at the front door. Kimura is known as the "tuna king" in Japan and paid a record 333.6 million yen (more than $2 million USD) for a single bluefin tuna at a New Year’s auction in 2019. The first U.S. location will open in Koreatown’s Chapman Market, taking the former Sake House by Hikari space at the corner of Sixth Street and Alexandria Avenue; initial signage went up in late May 2025, a liquor license was filed in February 2025, brown paper remains up in the windows obscuring the interior, and no opening date has been announced. If the Los Angeles offerings mirror those in Japan, guests can expect affordable nigiri, hand rolls, tempura, sashimi, chawanmushi and more served in a lively dining room; it will enter an already competitive field of sushi restaurants in the city, and hopefully the statue of Kimura will make the trip over as well." - Rebecca Roland

Google
this is definitely the place to get tuna. it’s absolutely delicious and so was the tempura dishes. the sushi rice was perfect. the salmon and albacore belly were fine. not as good as the tuna and i would skip the chawanmushi as it didn’t have as much dashi flavor. the asparagus dish was soooo good. very refreshing :)

This is the sushi restaurant featured in the Yakuza games with the statue of the friendly portly gentleman beckoning you inside with outstretched arms! The sushi here was top notch and ordered via an easy-to-use tablet app. The orders were served very quickly, within minutes of ordering, and there were some out-of-ordinary items like Toban dishes (things braised in a nabe pot with a delightful sweet soy sauce, a must try). Everything was super delicious but my favorite had to be the Ama Ebi shrimp sushi, the shrimp were enormous and so succulent, I could have eaten an unholy amount of them. They also specialize in tuna and offer just about every type of tuna imaginable so this will totally be a tuna-enjoyer's heaven. I came at an off-time, at around 2:30 on Saturday (30 minutes before they close at 3pm to re-open at 5pm) and did not have to wait to be seated. The parking can be quite harrowing, but that's LA Koreatown for you. I fervently hope this place opens a branch in Orange County (please! The demand is there!)

First trip SushiZanmai in Tokyo, Shinjuku district this past Feb. unbelievable quality and prices for a chain! Now in LA, a dream come true. quality is surreal, extremely fair prices. Service is good. Working on a few hiccups but overall too notch!

Google
Well known chain in Japan for good bang for your buck sushi. Like if you are looking for a good omakase experience at the counter, this aint it. But if you are looking for good quality sushi a la carte, this place does it well. It's probably one of the best sushi spot in K-Town right now if not the best. Kazunori is really good but I actually like this place better. And I know Norikaya recently opened up but that one looks like a more upscale kinda spot. It is definitely a must try. The toros are amazing and so is the uni. The flavor is good and there isn't that sinewy chew that some lower quality places have for toro. They also have this very long eel as well that I didn't get to try this time, but will next time. I got a lot of stuff but I'm not really a take picture of food type of person. Kinda wish I did now I wouldn't say it's cheap though. It might look that way on the menu, but you are getting only one piece of nigiri at a time. I know what happened to the "ni" part of the giri 😑? But otherwise beyond that it was a great experience and great quality food. Also you order food from a tablet. Personally I liked it but I know that's not everyone's cup of tea.

Probably the freshest, best tasting cuts of tuna that we've ever had. Service was really really good as well but the tablet ordering system could use some work. It's like having one menu for the table. All in all, fantastic experience and it's off to a great start as one of the best sushi restaurants around.

walk don’t run…. LMAO jk jk. nah but for real, so i was on my way to kazunori for a little treat and walked by this place. lots of flowers on the outside and grand opening signs. i then checked on google and was sold by the first review and thought i would give it a try. they’re running pretty good deals for their grand opening month, given the quality of the tuna. it was verrryyyy verrryyy good and fresh. my favorite was the fatty tuna nigiri. i ordered 3 in addition to other nigiri. everyone seems really happy to work there and staff was very kind; i sat at the bar. the green tea is very good quality - so definitely beat kazunoris green tea bag with potential microplastics…AND free green tea refills 😍. loved my dinner and would go back however it was definitely a higher price point than kazunori. i’m glad i got to indulge a bit with their grand opening deals. i suggest ordering a la cart! at least for this month… 😊

Google
Famous Japanese chain now in Ktown. It’s honestly fantastic, amazing otoro and all other tuna. Amazingly fresh and well priced considering the quality. Really friendly staff, from the host to all the servers. It’s getting busy so recommend booking if you can but you can also rock up and they will put you on a list.

Firstly, I have to say, the interior design and decor is so cute, And I forgot that I was in Chapman plaza for a moment. And that was actually really nice. I love kazunori, But something about eating there and being reminded that I'm in Chapman plaza kind of sucks. This place is nice in that I forgot I was home 🥲 So real review time, we got the deluxe kit for 55 bucks and the tuna kit for 45 bucks, honestly for $100 for me and my girlfriend, very reasonably priced, and that fish was definitely not some cheap crap just grabbed out of Hermosa Beach. There are 10 pieces on each kit , we ended Very full and super satisfied. We also grabbed a crab hand roll which was the most delicious I've ever had, and the paper was so easy to eat. Hate to say it but better than kazunori's hand rolls. 9$ a pop tho. Worth 🔥 There are a couple menu items that they don't actually have at their Japanese location like the yukke crispy rice. It's fire 🔥🔥 Not a long wait, only about 15 minutes on a Sunday night, granted it's still only been open for 2 weeks and quite new. Reservations through telephone until they create some system with OpenTable No liquor license yet, brand new, but that's okay. In process! Americans don't deserve the green tea quality, it's really good. Some will say it's overpriced but as long as they keep this quality, it's worth. it feels like I'm getting Japanese quality, but just paying American prices. You only get one or the other in LA. It's nice to have quality.

Yelp
Sushi Zanmai was an awesome experience! Was greeted by the friendly staff/chefs when we walked in and we were seated right away. They have a cool tablet ordering system where you can see all of their items on screen and pick and choose what you want at anytime, you don't have to wait for a server to take your order, you can just navigate the tablet at the table and send items to kitchen straightaway. The nigiri pieces we tried were all delicious, tuna, albacore and eel were my favorite. The miso soup was hot and great falvor! Something we tried that was a surprise winner to me was the grilled salmon that comes in the bento box, it had this really good char flavor it it, very good! Overall great experieince, will definitely be back to try more items.

Yelp
Newly opened sushi spot with high quality sushi and really welcoming staff. Order on the iPad and the menu is easily accessible with pictures so you know exactly what you're ordering. Located inside a plaza next to Uncle Tetsu cheesecake. We tried the tuna flight, the mochi jelly dessert, salmon sashimi, eel, and a sushi roll. All really good with great service.

Yelp
Giving this place its well-deserved 5 stars (times infinity). This location brings the warmth, energy, hospitality and most importantly, unbelievably fresh sushi that makes you feel as if you're being transported to Japan. Given how much I adore all things Japanese, I'm thrilled that they decided to bring this popular spot from Tokyo's Tsukiji Market here to Los Angeles! There are so many things to order, and while they are known for their tuna, you can select from various nigiri, rolls, udon/soups, hot appetizers and even saw a fresh katsu being served to another table. I ordered both the recommended lunch special with a variety of tuna nigiri cuts (such an amazing way to try some of their best masterpieces) as well as two of their special zuke albacore nigiri. I can't tell you how amazing the quality is of the fish. Each piece is not only beautifully presented but also butchered to perfection. You can tell experts are behind the scenes making sure you can enjoy the fish the way it's meant to be. The texture is so smooth and buttery. I loved all the items on my lunch combo but particularly the seared tuna and fatty tuna. I could probably eat that all day every day! Service is friendly, fast and consistent. Several staff members came to check on me during the meal and were very pleasant and energetic. The interior is also modern, clean and inviting! And also you can make reservations either by calling in or in person at the restaurant! Lunar, the most friendly hostess, also mentioned they started doing takeout which you can DM or order on Yelp for now. Located in Chapman Plaza, entrance is inside by the parking lot next to Uncle Tetsu!

Yelp
Went here opening week and service was so so so good! Usually places need some time to get their bearings but they already have everything on point! So impressed especially for the price. $12 uni is amazing The quality is great for what you pay for. Will definitely be coming back anytime I'm craving quick simple nigiri. They don't have their liquor license yet so only tea and water served. But paid parking is easy in the same plaza as quarters and kazunori. Everything was very clean and simple! Most of the sushi chefs are here from Japan and hopefully they will stay! Our server was Kaz and he was so nice and friendly! He suggested we get the Uni and we loved it!

Yelp
Wasn't expecting an evening like this.... New sushi spot inside the beautiful chapman plaza... so decided to try... Aaaannndddd Defiantly coming back... in my opinion this is an awsome place!!... 1st the decor is cool, the walls are covered with a wall paper (or maybe the walls are painted) that looks as if you are underwater... a huge sushi bar and as you walk in, everyone greets you with what im assuming a welcome? (They shout something in Japanese).... One thing that stood out? Is the way you order, thru an ipad. Your menu is an ipad, so you choose what you want then when done, press the order option and your food comes out in a timely manner.... with in 5 or 7 min, your complete order is on the table... we were a party of 4... order was big and the whole order came out quick.... Variety of options on the menu, big plus! Buttery and fresh fish... Quality meal for sure... not much to say about our meal, as long as sushi is too quality, enough is said.... With quality comes a price, a lil bit expensive. Rolls averaged 25 dollars... but again, quality is not cheap.... Service was great. Attentative and helpful when we had questions... specially with the ipad menu lol... Parking is not cheap.... as street parking is hard to find... 20 dollars to park... a parking structure is right across, not sure what is the cost to park... Great place, great food so definitely going back... When you go... Enjoy!!....

Yelp
The food was absolutely amazing. The price was what you would expect for the quality of the sashimi and sushi rolls. The servers were very attentive and nice. The only issue we had is that the tables are crammed right against one another, so you don't have much personal space. They are also using an order yourself system where you have to use a tablet to order your own meal. You have to order your corses each time, we thought it was weird we had to place our order several times and we're waiting for the rest of our food before realizing we had to complete the transaction. The parking is insane, so if you have another place to park and walk over would be best.

Yelp
I'm so thrilled to know that sushi zanmai is right in my neighborhood! Everything is so fresh and delicious! You definitely have to check it out. There is also a grand opening this week for a 500 pound tuna cutting ceremony! The staff and the chefs here are super friendly and sweet! I will definitely be back! The price point is great for good quality sushi!

Yelp
Fish is so fresh considering the pretty affordable price! Generous portions of tuna on the tuna king (~$35), yummy nigiri. Very fast service and attentive waiters. Order on iPad. Sukiyaki portion was small but yummy. Can get higher quality sushi elsewhere but hard to beat the price.

Yelp
First of all, welcome to the USA! I tried Sushi Zanmai in Japan 10 years ago -- it was amazing, so I couldn't wait to come here and try it again, this time in Koreatown, Los Angeles. We went both yesterday and today. If you love sushi, this place is a must-try. The quality is truly top-tier . The service was okay, but there's room for improvement -- for example, servers should wait at least 5 minutes before clearing empty dishes. Some customers, like us, are there to enjoy not just the sushi but also the ambiance and interior design. One thing I noticed -- is it now common to serve just one piece of sushi per order instead of two? I didn't recognize this trend. It feels like we're now paying more but getting less... just one piece of "silent sushi" .That said, we loved the experience and will definitely go back again. Try it at least once -- I'm sure everyone will agree the sushi quality speaks for itself.

Susana R.

Yelp
I've been walking past this corner for months, waiting for this place to open and I'm so happy to finally be able to try it! Not only was the fish was absolutely delicious and fresh, the rice was incredible as it balanced the flavors and provided a great texture. Would recommend:)

Yelp
I was fortunate to dine on the grand opening day and meet with the famous owner of Sushi zanmai. It wasn't like Tokyo Tsukiji Sushi Zanmai but it is good to see one in L.A. I even met the one from Tokyo Honten. The taste are almost same but missing a few kind from the set menu. But I enjoyed a lot on the opening day

Yelp
The quality of the fish was good BUT the portions were really small and there was way more rice to fish ratio. I understand they are new so that may be something to consider? But the service was good. Seating style is quite cramped but I would say if you want fish quality and the rolls are this basic to go elsewhere. The nigiri portions were good but the rolls were far too small and for $25 I don't think it was worth it not the worst option but there are wayyyyyyy better sushi options in k town! Nice people prices are crazy

Elizabeth K.

Yelp
Tldr: Great service but extremely expensive for subpar sushi. ALSO DO NOT get the sukiyaki. The vibe is more of a "fun" new age sushi restaurant, similar to conveyor belt sushi energy without the revolving sushi. The salmon belly was great but the cuts were inconsistent in quality. The other nigiri were tasty as well but were thinly sliced making the average cost of $3-4/nigiri expensive. The spicy tuna crispy rice was pretty good 7/10. The rice was kinda crispy/hard but also kinda gooey so it wasn't the best texture but the spicy tuna was flavorful. They could have added more tuna to balance out the rice/meat ratio. The agedashi tofu was ok 5/10. They used medium firm tofu instead of the typical silken tofu and the coating was not very crispy. The sauce was also ok. Flavorful but not the typical flavor profile you expect from agedashi tofu. The sukiyaki was the standout of the night due to how much of a massive rip-off it was 1/10. The meat was cooked to hell and back, there was no noodles just meat, 2 pieces of tofu, and a small amount of veggies. The serving size was TINY all for the price of $22. If you order the sukiyaki, it's because you want to be scammed and you love tire-textured beef. The only thing that was good about it was the flavor, and even then it's a basic sukiyaki flavor. If you get the sukiyaki, dont say I didnt warn you.

Yelp
Tuna was divine. Incredibly fresh. The menu has nice options other than sushi. Staff were very welcoming.

Yelp
We'd been waiting for this shop to open after having experienced in Japan many times and it didn't disappoint! Excellent quality and variety of sushi, big counter of sushi chefs, deep menu with a lot of hot and cold dishes as well. Tuna was extraordinary - the Tuna King gets his name for a reason! Service was excellent. We will be back!

Yelp
This is one of my favorite places to eat in Tokyo and I am excited to see them here in Los Angeles. I've eaten here twice since it opened and it tastes just like it does in Tsukiji. If you have been to Tokyo before, you know about Sushi Zanmai. I just need a location closer to my house!

Yelp
Sushi Zanmai, a well-known Tokyo-based sushi chain founded in 2001 at Tsukiji Fish Market, is set to open its first U.S. restaurant in Koreatown's Chapman Market (at 3465 W. 6th Street). There are a grand opening their doors August 2, 2025. It's known for offering reasonably priced sushi--from salmon to fatty tuna--with surprisingly decent quality for a bustling chain. Founded by Kiyoshi Kimura, nicknamed "The Tuna King" after famously shelling out ¥333million (~$2 million USD) for a single bluefin tuna, Sushi Zanmai built its reputation on reliability, freshness, and late‑night accessibility. Expect a spirited dining room with counter seating and approachable service--not formal omakase, but welcoming and energetic A wide array of nigiri and sashimi--tuna, salmon, yellowtail, shrimp, unagi. Creative specialty rolls like the "Zanmai Roll" or "King Crab Roll" plus hand and firecracker rolls for when you want something more indulgent. Add-ons like chawanmushi, tempura, and sashimi platters--a full menu without the sticker shock of high-end omakase Sushi Zanmai Koreatown is a go‑to spot for those craving accessible, tuna‑forward sushi without paying omakase prices. If you're in the mood for straightforward nigiri, creative rolls, and a dynamic yet unpretentious vibe inspired by its Tokyo roots, this new location is worth checking out.
