The 38 Best Texas Restaurants, Mapped | Eater

"WHAT: Extraordinary burgers in an old-world sweets shop, borne from the mind of a classically trained pastry chef. WHY: While Hans Peter Muller continues to produce the European baked goods made popular here by his late Swiss-born father (you won’t find anything as ethereal as this distinctive version of Black Forest cake), this second-generation pastry chef has also become Cowtown’s finest burger meister. Muller wows his loyal cafe clientele with inventive Texas-raised Akaushi wagyu burgers — towering, sizzling-hot creations that thrill the palate. Best is the seasonal special Cloudcroft Christmas Burger, combining New Mexican red and green chiles with pepper jack cheese and grilled onions atop the supple patty, all crowned with a fried egg and framed by a house-baked brioche bun. — J.N." - Bill Addison

Google
So I have heard all good things about this bakery for years and finally decided to try it. I give 4 stars because their pastries were beautiful and the service was friendly but here is my big BUT, I took the Black Forest cake to a get together and not one of us was impressed. I’m so sorry but it was like freeze dried crumbles, not at all what we were expecting. To be honest 38.00 down the drain because we didn’t really eat it. We will return to try something else.

Google
Worst Black Forest “Cake” ever. I was the hostess and very disappointed in the quality of this cake and embarrassed for all, especially the guest of honor. Swiss Pastry should change the name of this deceptive cake, because it is nothing like the original chocolate and cherry Black Forest Cake we all expect. There was no chocolate cake or cherries in this “cake”. The Happy Birthday writing was written sloppily without care of presentation. We were told to freeze it before serving. When taken out to thaw, it was very, very difficult to cut. Only with a sharp tipped carvers knife, point down and the 3rd attempter to cut the cake, could a piece be chiseled out and then it crumbled on the cake dish. I would NOT ever recommend this cake to anyone. To their credit, they did reimburse the full amount of the price we paid for this “cake”.

Google
This is the greatest bakery shop I have ever been too! Don’t be fooled by the exterior go inside and try not to order some of everything! Came for the napoleons left with box filled with many pastries. YUMMY!

27 July 2025: I attended our youngest daughter's birthday party this past weekend.and I normally don't eat cake because I'm not a fan of most, and I'm diabetic. Not only is your Black Forest Meringue Cake the best cake I've eaten in my 76 years of life, I think it's much lower in carbs than most. It's so light and delicious, not too filling after a big Texas style BBQ dinner. I sure do wish you had a shop in San Antonio! Yum!

Google
When I come to town I always have to order a black forest cake. Then while I'm in there I see so many delicious pastries that are unique and things I could never make on my own. Buttery, flaky pastries. Excellent treats

Google
I went to a party where the Black Forest Cake was served. The hostess made it clear that this was NOT a German Chocolate Black Forest Cake. This Black Forest cake is heavenly. Light, crunchy, and delightful. I can understand why it is so popular. My mouth is watering just thinking about it! The ingredients are gluten free, but I’m not sure if it is baked in a gluten free kitchen area. One review says it’s a freeze dried cake. Good grief. It’s meringue! I can’t wait to order one for my family!

Google
This bakery has an awesome selection of tasty treats. I highly recommend the Black Forest Cake. I’m not sure why some of these reviews are dissing it. The ones I’ve bought were perfect every time! I guess everybody has to complain about something.

Google
We got our wedding cake as well as additional black forest grooms cake done for our wedding this past month. I provided some reference photos of what I wanted, but gave the decorator, Amber, some freedom in the interpretation of the design and it turned out wonderful! They delivered and set it up for the wedding and communicated with us throughout the whole process. We made a game plan for the black forest cake during our consultation. We had an “example” grooms cake to cut for our cake cutting and then they were able to provide pre-sliced pieces for the rest of the guests. We were also provided a wonderful sample of both wedding cakes and black forest cake during our initial consultation.

Yelp
Today, my coworker and I was on the look for banana pudding and she saw that this establishment had some available. The customer service was HORRIBLE. MK was very blunt and act as if she didn't want to service us. The other worker looked as if she was ready to go. It was definitely not a welcoming environment. The vibe was very disappointing. There was only one banana pudding which I am going to give to my coworker but I doubt I come back. First impressions do count!!!

Yelp
I've only been by to get their infamous Black Forest Cake, which is just a godsend! This place is always packed, and that should tell you how good it is! The staff is also super friendly!

Yelp
Still adore Swiss Pastry Shop and the terrific team that handle the morning shift sales, when I am usually there picking up lovely baked goods for special folks. I've been going here 25 years, still lovvvve them. My hubby introduced me to their amazing food - he has been coming here since he was 16 (now in his mid 60s!). His eyes light up when I bring him their macaroons. Or frankly anything, they ARE that good. Locals know, and we STILL totally recommend. FIVE FORKS!

Yelp
Ordered 3 different items and found each one to be pretty tasty. The workers were friendly and overall I'm happy with the experience. I took off one star because the store was a mess! Half the store was being used as storage with boxes and supplies out in the open. Very strange setup. Maybe they are renovating... not sure.

Yelp
best black forest cake in the metroplex! i love all the other pastries too! i travel across town to come here and definitely worth the drive!

Yelp
THE 'Swiss Pastry Shop' has been the talk of the town ever since I moved to the DFW area. So much so, that various people from both Dallas and Fort Worth cite it as THE spot to go for all things 'baked good.' BLACK FOREST CAKE | 7.7/10 The #1 (WITHOUT QUESTION) cake in the DFW area that was recommended to me was this infamous creation. Very light, kept-cold, chocolate strips & slices lightly sprinkled all around, an extremely light-n-fluffy whip-cream-like fill surrounding two airy cake centers that resemble dramatically light almond cookies. It's an addicting, light, holiday favorite that tastes like mom surprising you and your siblings with a bowl of home made cookies + whip cream. Deliciousness! However, I've got to say that the over-hype this cake was given presented me with a hard decision to rate it lower than I expected. I've got a pastry-chef for an aunt... so I'm particularly picky! It's a great cake to try, but the take of it being the best in the area is controversial in my book. Other than that war-starting opinion, this shoppe looks to have delicious pastries that sell out quickly. *ORDER IN ADVANCE!*

Yelp
A friend advised us to visit the Swiss Pastry Shop for pie and other desserts. The coconut cream and peach pies were ok, not great, especially the crusts, which were soggy. The chocolate brownie was good. The staff wasn't very friendly.

Yelp
I am definitely glad I checked their menu before decided where to have breakfast. As the staff mentioned to a couple looking to have breakfast, their kitchen has closed. The only breakfast option was a breakfast pastry. When I typing the caption for the photo I uploaded, the site was suggesting menu items no longer available. As such, I stopped to have a pastry and coffee before heading back East. I did not see anything tempting until I caught the Chocolate Rouladen at the bottom of the display case. I ordered that and a coffee. Unfortunately, the employee did not hear when I mentioned I planned to dine here; otherwise, she would have not forgotten to provide utensils. Now that the kitchen is closed, the interior did not feel appealing to dine inside. The interior was not brightly lit and a section was closed off. When I had my first bite, the pastry was too cold to taste. It needed to be left at room temperature before being served. Some parts of the pastry did warm a bit. As for the coffee, folks in line ahead and behind me definitely were not here ordering it. Other than the couple who wanted to have breakfast, I was the only customer dining inside. The other customers got take out. As such, the pastries would have warmed a bit if they ate them as soon as they arrived home.

Yelp
Swiss Pastry Shop has this delicious cake that you have gotta try! It's called the Black Forest Cake. I was recommended this cake by many others, and I'm here recommending it to you. For a couple of my friends, they thought it was too sweet and heavy, but for me, I absolutely loved it. If you have a sweet tooth like myself, this is a must-try.

Yelp
Small business with delicious foods! My favorite was the jalapeño cheddar pecan sausage biscuit! Amazing!!!!
google avatar

Felicia Z.

Yelp
This USED to be a great place. The people who worked there had been there 20yr + . This bakery has totally changed! The only thing left from the original place is an overpriced Black Forest cake. $58.00 for an 8 in and $68.00 for a 10 in ????!!!! I'd rather go to Nothing Bundt cake. I used to know everyone when I walked in. They knew my kids. I loved the German mustard and sausages at lunch. I dont know who replaced the staff and the food but, we lost an ICON.
google avatar

James W.

Yelp
Came here after hearing about their food and reading that they were a great breakfast place. Checked the category multiple times on multiple sites and it lists this as a breakfast restaurant serving lunch and brunch. This is incorrect. This is a BAKERY ONLY they do not serve lunch or breakfast anymore despite the signage in their building stating in big bold letters "Breakfast, lunch, desert, espresso". The cakes seemed good and the staff is extremely friendly and helpful, if I ever need baked goods I'll be going here first.

Joe M.

Yelp
Swiss Pastry Shop always has a good selection of pastries, pies and cakes. I tried their new Black Forest macaroon and it was delicious. I am so glad they developed this wonderful treat. I highly recommend these as well as the Black Forest cake.
google avatar

Yelp
This is the only and best Black Forest Cake I will get for our Family. It has been a tradition for many years. The service is always wonderful and it's a cute little coffee style bakery.
google avatar

Tony D.

Yelp
Had a slice of Red Velvet and Loved it! Def one of the better slices I have had out there, perfectly moist to me! Italian Cream sets the standard for what I expect for this type of cake. Maybe a little too much going on with the insides but still fantastic. I have to try their Black forest cake someday :( i did not see any in the shelf.
google avatar

Anna B.

Yelp
Ordered the chocolate fudge cake and it was to die for. It was the perfect dessert for my dad's birthday and my mom couldn't stop raving about the cake. It was ready on time and packaged up nicely. I can't wait to try other treats from this store!
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing cheesecakes and service. I needed last minute cakes for bdays and the quality is phenomenal. They are focused on bakery and THE CHOICES ARE UNLIMITED!!!! Multiple sizes and flavors. The presentation is beautiful
google avatar

Yelp
Old School extraordinary! This is like stepping back into 1960s Texas. You just don't see this type of place anymore. They are almost gone. Now that being said there is nothing too special about it. The cakes and cookies I purchased where ok and the price was fantastic but....If you want a bit of nostalgia and a cure for a sweet tooth, stop in. These places are going going gone...

Teresa M.

Yelp
Great pastries! Love their forest chocolate cake. Absolutely recommend this place to all

Alan P.

Yelp
Perfection, and consistency! Great place you can rely upon! Black Forest is an award winner or should be!
google avatar

Michael M.

Yelp
Used to be a great place. It's a shell of its former self .... Order birthday cakes 3weeks in advance, showed up to get them and they weren't made and said they couldn't do anything about it, and didn't even seem to care at all.
google avatar

Emily D.

Yelp
Sad this place isnt open for lunch at all due to staffing issues so we couldn't even try it. They only offer pastries and cakes. Blinds inside were closed, it was pretty dark and gloomy inside. We ordered an apple turnover and A slice of black forrest cake. The apple turnover was cold but the cashier was able to microwave it for me when i asked, the black forrest cake was not that at all. It was not even a chocolate cake. And no cherries. It was like a solid (frozen) almond meringue tart layered with whipped cream and chocolate shavings. Not very flavorful at all. The apple turnover was okay. The filling tasted artificial like from a grocery store but the pastry was flaky and delicious! Maybe another flavor would be better.

James S.

Yelp
I miss eating lunch here on the regular. I need to find a reason to get catering or at least visit the bakery.
google avatar

Yelp
Great bakery. Love the cinnamon roll and sticky bun. You go for the food. We come every time we visit Fort Worth and TCU
google avatar

Angelar P.

Yelp
Called to have a Black Forest cake reserved day of and they were able to do that for me. Great customer service! Picked up a cake and a bunch of other pastries...delicious!!! Will be back!

Alexis C.

Yelp
Can't recommend this place enough! They never disappoint!! The strawberry cake is so unique and the best that I've tried! (I love trying new bakeries) I recently purchased about 20 muffins for the office and I chose three different flavors banana, lemon blueberry and chocolate chocolate chip! Everyone loved them! The chocolate chocolate chip was my favorite!
google avatar

Lisa H.

Yelp
100% fresh delicious yummy goodness Non stop of goodness here from Hamburgers to cakes and cookies

Samantha G.

Yelp
The black forrest cake was to die for!!!! So glad we drove from Austin specifically to get that cake. 100% would do it again!

Yelp
I had some downtime today in the AM, so I went to find a bakery to take my mind off of things. One thing I quickly noticed was how attentive the service was at this place. They made sure my wants was taken care of and didn't try to convince me to buy more. The cost for each item was pretty standard - nothing jumped out on me. I do wish they heated up my items before I left, so I could munch on them on the road back home. The cinnamon roll was pretty tasty and had the right amount of frosting on top. The kolache had a really flavorful and smoky sausage in the middle, but I do think they surrounded the sausage with too dough. I also ended up ordering a strawberry cupcake as well for my afternoon snack. The frosting on this cupcake was just the right amount, and it wasn't too sweet. The base of the cupcake had a strong strawberry flavor which I genuinely enjoyed. The place also sells an assortment of cookies and cakes which I will eventually try...

Yelp
Sign on the door says it's just a bakery now since July 2021. Damn shame, the great food they had will be missed.

Yelp
The Swiss Pastry Shop has the best Black Forest Cake & I am not a cake or pie eater, but that cake, Ohh Lala !!
google avatar

Brittany D.

Yelp
So delicious!! Do your belly a favor and eat here!! We had the falafel burger and the pimento cheese burger- both we're absolutely delicious!! The falafel was one of the best burgers I've had ever. For desert we had the German chocolate pie and the Black Forest cake- so so delicious. We even took some cherry and key lime pies home for our family. Great food! I agree with previous posts though, the decor could use some updating- but don't let that stop you from trying this place.
google avatar

Krista R.

Yelp
Came for a birthday cake and left with a whole chocolate brownie cake, strawberry cheesecake, and a slice of red velvet. Red velvet was pretty good. The brownie cake was delicious. It served its purpose. Haven't tried the strawberry cheesecake yet, but I'm sure it's good. Would like to come back for lunch one day. Would definitely consider getting a cake from here again.

Yelp
You gotta be looking for this place. It's FW tradition. Like Paris Coffee or Kincaid's. Don't come here looking for a diner. This is a specialty place. The good kind. Don't complain about the price. If you want McDonald's prices then go to McDonald's! I got the Cuban tater salad and Rhubarb strudel. It's my first time here. It's quiet and casual. Lots of old timers. You'll like it. I did!
google avatar

Amy D.

Yelp
The first time I came to Swiss Pastry Shop, I didn't know they were known for burgers. I wasted my time with corned beef and bratwurst. And actually, I had decided to never return. They were both pretty bad. Thank goodness some family friends chose to meet here one day for lunch after I watched a video of the chef talking about his true love of meat. That video made me order the Fort Worth cheesesteak. Hollllyyyy bananas. It might have a whole day's worth of calories but it was so worth it. I ordered the 'half' but it was still huge and I had leftovers. My boyfriend had an amazing burger (see picture). It was probably the best burger I've had in a long time. Get the burgers or the cheesesteak. Don't waste your time with the other stuff! For dessert, I had strawberry hibiscus tea and a slice of lemon meringue. The tea was delicious. The lemon meringue was horrible. It tasted so artificial that I had to stop eating it. The only good part was the crust. One friend had the strawberry cake and the other had the German chocolate. Neither one liked the dessert. If I order dessert here again, I will stick to the black forest cake. Things to order here: cheesesteak, burgers, and black forest cake
google avatar

Kelsey A.

Yelp
A diner in the rough! Breakfast is served til 11am and lunch is all sorts of handmade burgers and sandwiches. Enter and be greeted by a pastry case full of sweets and treats. Seat yourself, relax, and don't dare feel rushed to leave. My faves: chicken salad, carrot cake sandwich, and their pickles.

Cindy P.

Yelp
Cupcakes and the red velvet cake were delicious, great costumer service! They said the restaurant part will not reopen

Carmen E.

Yelp
Picked up Christmas cookies and chocolate chip cookies on a whim. They were wonderful!
google avatar

Yelp
Let me say this one time... order-the-dirty-redneck burger! It was delish! My husband and I split the burger and my kids split a kids meal of the hot dog with fruit. We wanted to order desert so we decided on splitting the food so we would all have space and also not have to bring home left overs. The dirty redneck is the most expensive burger in the menu at $15. Yes that's rather a high price tag for just a burger but it was big, the bacon on it was big, and the brisket was so tasty so I understand the price in it and after trying it I highly recommend if you don't know what to order get the redneck because you will not be sorry at all! The kids meal hotdog was also massive, it was easily the size of two normal hotdogs as it was extremely thick, it had a very fresh bun that came with it and the kids loved it all! My kids are obsessed with fruit so we paid the extra $.50 for a side of fruit and it came with a good size of fruit and not just melon like most places. I really appreciate that our waitress told us the hotdog was so large or else we would have had a full meal coming home with us. This place is very much a dive vs upscale (perfect for people with kids), I didn't feel underdressed wearing yoga pants and a T-shirt. We will be back!

Yelp
Heard about this place in a foodie group. The pastries just weren't for me. They all tasted the same. The eclairs, cream puffs, and napoleon pastries all had the same whipped cream inside. It was the taste of sugar and that was about it. I also ordered the chocolate mousse cake and had it been moist it would've been good but it was a little on the dry side. Nothing to brag about at all.
google avatar

Yelp
After hearing a helluva lot of hoopla about the burgers I decided I needed to try it. I have a BBQ philosophy that is applicable to the burger at this Ft. Worth institution. There are two types of BBQ (or burger) people: There's the group that focuses on the meat. They pay attention to the texture, the fat-to-lean ratio, the cook/smoke, the seasoning. Let's call them the meat-heads. Then there's another group of people that focuses on the entire experience. They are deeply appreciative of meat-craft(wo)manship yet they are also interested in how the meat melds with sides, ambiance, sauce, bread. Let's call them the complete-heads. Though I certainly appreciate both approaches I am certainly of the latter category. As much as I appreciate the dedicated, trained, unilateral scope of the meat-head I am a complete-head. That being said, the burgers at SPS are delicious but they will be ranked higher among the meat-head population. It is, without a doubt, one of the best burgers in FtW. What it is not, is one of the most interesting burgers. For the complete-head that I am I was thrilled that the burger was well cooked and the bun represented. The toppings and condiments were underwhelming, as is the ambiance. This place is a FtW establishment with small-town-diner charm but it could really use a facelift and better use of their wall of windows--it's dark and drab inside. But the biggest let-down of all: the hours. It's next to impossible to find a workable time to go to SPS, they close fairly early on weekdays (5pm, I think) and they aren't open on Sundays. Go, you'll enjoy that burger. It's been voted #1 for a reason. But if you're more of a meat-head you'll be more of a repeat-head.

Yelp
Always good pastries and the staff is friendly. Only place we go for Hot Cross Buns!!

Yelp
FYI...The bakery is still open and full of amazing things. However, the sign on the door says the restaurant part is permanently closed.

Yelp
Note: This review is only for the Pastry Shop. At the end of my review, I'll give a brief review of the restaurant. On to the good stuff... THE PASTRY SHOP Now, seriously, I don't know how this place isn't putting every donut shop out of business. Don't get me wrong. I love me some sugary, melt-in-your-mouth donuts of all varieties (boutique and cheap). But when you compare them to these pastries...err, you really can't. Not only are Swiss Pastry Shop's pastries soooo tasty, perfect texture, top notch quality, and generously sized, they are also less expensive than the cheap donuts found elsewhere! They could easily charge 3-4x as much as they do! OUR THREE VISITS This morning, I trekked in (it's 10 miles from my house) to get my family 2 large cinnamon rolls, 1 strawberry rhubarb Strudel, 1 apricot turnover, 1 huge sticky bun, and 1 cream cheese pocket (that's 6 pastries if you weren't counting) for the price of 5 cheap donuts! Despite this being my third visit in the last month, my mouth still dropped when the kind lady gave me the price. Give these people some good tips, folks! Support this business! COMING BACK? Heck yes!!! Despite the 15 minute drive and passing right by 4 donut shops and 3 bakeries/pastry shops on the way, we will keep coming back. RECOMMENDED? For the reasons stated above...if you're on your way to work or just need some of the best pastries around for your family or a group, try this amazing place. You may become a regular! TO TRY We've yet to try the Uncake (SPS's famous Black Forest Macaroon Cake), but it's on our short-list. I wanna taste what all the buzz is about. I hear the burgers are really great, too. We'll see...I'm very critical when it comes to burgers. THE RESTAURANT My son and I went for breakfast. The atmosphere is very basic...your typical cheap tables and chairs spaced out in a large room. Each of us had a 2-3 egg omelette (he had bacon, I had ham). They were very good. Nothing to write home about, but they were cooked perfectly and tasted great! I also had a cappuccino. They use Avoca beans (good, not my favorite), but the milk was expectedly over-frothed, which is typical of a non-coffee shop. I'll probably get the drip coffee next time. +++++ Pastries +++++ People/Service ++++- Atmosphere of Pastry Shop +++-- Atmosphere of Restaurant +++-- Cappuccino (will try straight espresso next time)

Yelp
SPS is a Fort Worth staple. I've been going since I was a kid. My favorites are the Napoleon and Black Forrest Cake. I always get cookies. You can't go wrong.
google avatar

Patti S.

Yelp
The black Forrest cake is like nothing I have ever had. It wasn't want I expected, but it was amazing. Husband said the pecan pie is his new favorite.

Yelp
This was our second visit and did not disappoint! Brought my Mom out for a late lunch and missed most of their lunch crowd. There were a couple of large groups still, and several other tables of smaller groups. It's a busy place! I ordered the Cordon Bleu Sandwich. You get a choice of sides (cottage cheese, chips, potato salad, side salad, sauerkraut, fresh fruit, or a cup of soup). The sandwich was delicious! Grilled chicken, yummy thin slices of ham, topped of with Swiss cheese. It's a huge sandwich, and with a side of cottage cheese.....I was only able to finish half. Gotta leave room for the cake! My Mom got The Smoking Cuban and said it was delicious. The service was great and we only had one minor gaffe. Our server was busy with a very large group and forgot to put our orders in to the kitchen. About 10 or so minutes after we ordered, he realized his mistake. It was immediately corrected and he let us know what happened. Very gracious and apologetic. He also said our desserts would be on him. True to his word, they were! I had the Chocolate Mousse Cake and my Mom had the Chocolate Meringue Pie. Oh. My. Very rich and just the right amount of sweetness. Keeping this place on our regular list for sure!

Yelp
This place is no doubt one of the most smallest places a half being able to have breakfast but one of the best. Why do I say one of the best? It is really simple. This play is not just good because I say so but the service and quality here talk by itself. The quality of food is great i must point. The portions are just awesomely perfect for penis(literally). Food is totally fresh. No frozen, no preservatives products. Flavor and seasoning are perfectly delivered to the table. It might not be a five stars dish by any mean but it will make your whole day great. Plus the menu, they have a delish variety of pastry to die for. Staff are amazingly awesome and really take service to a whole other level. U got to see it with your own eyes. They accept credit cards, no Wi-Fi and they have TV at this place.

Yelp
As a major foodie, specifically bakeries and pastries, I just had to check this one out for myself. I called at 7 am to check for availability and could actually reserve my kouign amann in case it ran out before I got there. The sticky bun was pretty amazing, the chunky walnuts were crispy and well coated in thick cinnamon caramel. The kouign amann looked fantastic, it was light and airy, (but because I've been spoiled by San Francisco's Arsicault's kouign amann, which is like a giant palmier), but this one looked better than it tasted. The top and outside was excellent, with the expected crispy buttery and sugary goodness, but sadly, the layers inside literally paled in comparison, and was rather tasteless. The "Uncake", though called the Black Forest cake, is an interpretation of a meringue cake, with thick whipped cream and almond meringue. Light, airy, crumbly and crunchy all at once. The meringue was not as sweet as traditional meringue and is great on its own. If you're not a fan of whipped cream like me, this is not a cake for you. It felt like there was something missing, like if a layer of jam, or cake, or fruit between the whipped cream, it would have pushed this cake from pretty good to exceptional. Overall, this bakery has something for everyone, with reasonable prices, and very friendly and welcoming service. The owner even came out to explain to me what Swiss butter was (imported butter with 82% fat content!). The reservation service tipped this review to a 5 star.

Taylor N.

Yelp
THIS IS ONLY A BAKERY. No lunches. I wish they would change their name OR post a sign on the door, OR post this on the internet. So disappointed when I came there for lunch.
