18 Dishes to Add to Your California Bucket List | Eater

"The Central Coast is home to California’s own variety of Santa Maria–style barbecue, defined by its use of coastal live oak trees to fuel the open-pit grill. At The Swiss, the tri-tip sandwich (a cut often used outside of the region for ground beef rather than steak) is served with pinquito beans and salsa, two traditional sides that date back to when local rancheros first dug barbecue pits in the nineteenth century." - Vox Creative

I brought my whole family of 5. We loved the food, and the services were great. If you like steak, I highly recommend the filleminon, I ordered the 16-oz ribs eye, and it was great. Next time, I will order medium well. My son had the salmon, and it disappeared. Overall, it was a great experience. It was a little noisy and overwhelming for me, kinda set off my PTSD. But I would say 5 star. PS the try tip sandwich great.

Google
The Oscar Filet and maple glazed Salmon were both very good. Service was friendly and efficient. House made mud pie finished the meal off nicely!

Wren Pompeo

Google
I have not ever had a problem with the food here until tonight. I spent 50+ dollars for a ribeye sandwich and got the saddest ribeye I’ve ever seen.

Jungho Lee

Google
Santa Maria barbecue is known for its tri-tip but I recommend steaks of any cut over it.

Have been coming to the Swiss for years. I grew up 3 blocks away! Another great meal at the Swiss It was our anniversary , I had the 14oz top sirloin with garlic mashed and my wife had the wonderful Rib Eye salad, done in the world famous Santa Maria Style BBQ! Soooooooo Gooooood! Service was great as usual and we had fantastic Old Fashioned drinks with our dinner. We will be back sooner than later!

Google
This was my husband’s and I first time eating here. I would definitely recommend to anyone that wants to eat some bomb.com food. To start the service was excellent the waiter was awesome! My husband is picky when it comes to his steak, he ordered the prime rib and he said it was The best restaurant steak he has ever eaten. And I ordered the jumbo shrimp with pilaf and I must say the shrimp was breaded perfectly. 👌🤤🍻

Google
All around the best steak house I have been to in all my world travels

Google
There are a number of local steakhouses in Santa Maria and they are all good-- including this one. The Swiss is north of Main St which makes it unique. The atmosphere at first feels a little bleh, compared to its competition, but the food is on an equal footing. So, I guess in summary, this is a slightly more affordable but less classy version of the typical Santa Maria steakhouse.

Yelp
I don't even know where to begin. We made reservations ahead of time, and the woman on the phone was super friendly and accommodating. We arrived a few minutes past our reserves time, yet the staff was quick to get is to a table and never skipped a beat. We had our appetizers within minutes of ordering and the artichoke was to die for. I wanted a specific drink that I didn't know the name of, so I gave the waitress the ingredients and she brought me back my drink better than I make it at home! My boyfriend ordered a steak and it tasted like butter, melting in your mouth. I ordered the pastrami burger and salad and while I didn't want to stop eating the delicious salad, I had to dive into the juicy, made-to-order burger. Let's just say, I felt like Sally in the movie, "When Harry Met Sally"! Best food I've ever had. Thank you to the staff and bartender for an exquisite time!!!!

Yelp
Passing through town. Tried this restaurant. Ordered pork chop dinner. Pork chop was moist & delicious. The vegetables were amazing. Also ordered penne pasta & sausage dinner. It was great. Garlic bread was also very good. All staff friendly and server knowledgeable. Wish we had a place like this close to us!!

Yelp
The Swiss has become a go to place for my family and sometimes I go with friends as well. The restaurant has a great old school steak house vibe and if you want a bar setting, it's available too. Our favorites there include the grilled chicken salad, the full rack of baby back ribs, tri tip sandwiches, and the mushroom Swiss burger. The entrees here are large, but they are well worth it and great for sharing or splitting a meal with someone. The Edie nachos are a fantastic appetizer. Lastly, the staff is amazing and friendly. They do a great job taking care of their customers and they offer top notch service for a wonderful dining experience. I cannot recommend the Swiss enough if you are looking for BBQ and other options in Santa Maria.

Yelp
My visit to The Swiss was because of some of my customers that told me I had to go here during my visit, and oh boy What a find! I've already been here twice! My first visit, I walked in before an hour before closing. Not at all what I expected from seeing the outside of the building first. The area, and building itself gave me very dive bar aesthetics. However, I was told I needed to come in and have the prime rib dip so I was determined. The inside is half restaurant and have bar, separated by a wall. Both sides, in my opinion, looking significantly different. So whether you're after bar vibes or a sit down restaurant, The Swiss has a something for you. I chose the bar, everyone was friendly, and the bartenders very attentive. I of course ordered the prime rib dip. For $25 it comes with the sandwhich, soup or salad and a side of your choice. Mashed potatoes, baked potato or fries. The soups are delicious, my first go around I had the chicken tortilla soup, second was the Toscana. Absolutely phenomenal, what a way to set the mood! The sandwhich itself is up there with some of the best French dip sandwiches I've ever had. Top 3 for sure! The meat is so tender, comes with mushrooms and onions and the au jus gives they give you to dip it in changes the flavor just enough to make each bite different. I would suggest adding cheese (Swiss) to it. I did not have it that was the first time, so that addition my second time also made it a different experience. I love the Swiss, they of course have many other options that also looked delicious coming out of the kitchen, but I needed to come back for my fix and I will be back again!

Yelp
It was our 2nd visit to Santa Maria & this was still the restaurant recommended by the concierge. We wanted to have both specials so we ordered the Prime Rib slider appetizer & 2 Santa Maria Tri Tip sandwiches. It was the perfect portions for our party of 4. Meat was flavorful without needing additional sauces. It is as good as the 1st time 2 years ago. Service was super friendly & attentive. Our server really knew the menu & spoke so proudly of it. It was so impressive & comforting.

Yelp
while helping a friend house hunt out of town, we decided we had earned a great dinner and our agent referred us over to the Swiss restaurant. It did not disappoint. We had fantastic steaks done to perfection.
google avatar

Randy W.

Yelp
The Oscar Filet and the Maple glazed Salmon was excellent! They both paired well with Rancho Sisquoc Merlot. Service was on point and very friendly. Even the bus person was helpful and friendly. We had house made mud pie for dessert. Pleasantly surprised at the overall experience.

Yelp
The steak sandwich and the Ortega burger are our go to order. Can't beat the ribeye flavor. I'd go there everyday for lunch if I could. One of my 3 favorite restaurants in Santa Maria.
google avatar

Erick C.

Yelp
The service was mediocre due to the attitude of the staff. From the start, the host was really rude and there was no wait but they still didn't let us in within the quoted time. Food was cold. Wouldn't recommend.
google avatar

Steve T.

Yelp
To start with we went yesterday around 5:00 and the food was awesome. Our server was also great. My only issue was when we got there it wasn't busy and there were two hostesses. One was helping customers get their to go orders. The other looked at me and a my wife and instead of helping us she sat down on a chair and got on her cell phone ignoring us and starting watching a movie. Unbelievable. Terrible customer service and just a bad look. Again The Swiss has amazing food and is a great place they just need to insure customers come before getting on a cell phone.

Yelp
My roommate raved about the tri tip sandwich so i picked up a sandwich for lunch today and I was super bummed that it was soo salty. I gave it 3 stars because the onion rings were bomb and the service was great. I know that it could have possibly been a different chef or maybe sinus issues messing up the chefs taste buds. I'll give it another try maybe at a different time of day or something.

Yelp
Food: 4.5. Came by on a Saturday around 5 pm. Place was only slightly busy at that time but got busier later. I ordered their Beef Ribs. Ribs came out timely and at the right temperature. Ribs were excellent. Meat was so flavorful with the right amount of fat. Service was excellent as usual.
google avatar

Yelp
I've been craving a steak for so long and this place did not disappoint. Steak was cooked to order mashed potatoes, blue cheese on the side fantastic.

Yelp
I can't believe I've never been to this restaurant. I met someone at the podiatrist office and she told me about it. So I made reservations for my husband and I to go. Outside and inside is non-descriptive. But the service, food and pricing was excellent. Our server was Carly and she was very nice and told us about the nightly specials. I had an old-fashioned drink which was pretty good and reasonable. My husband wasn't real hungry so he got the pork chop that came with salad and vegetables. The pork chop was so big he had leftovers. There is another dish with two pork chops and you get more with it. I went big time for the 14 ounce filet mignon. It also came with a salad, bread, beans and salsa. You got to pick from a wide variety of sides, I kept seeing onion rings go by, so I picked that and did not disappoint. So I had leftovers also no room for dessert. Definitely want to take my grandkids here for a family meal because you get, for example, chicken and ribs and lots of sides so they get to pick whatever they want.

Yelp
Came on a Friday evening at 5pm. Moderately busy, but was seated within 10 mins. Pretty fair sized menu, but finally decided on the special: Filet and lobster tail with addition of blue cheese, sauteed mushrooms, and sauteed onions. The meal comes with garlic bread, choice of side, soup or salad, and beans and salsa. I chose the clam chowder soup and it was a nice start to my meal. Everything else arrived in decent time. The filet (med rare) was adequate and the lobster tail was seasoned well. Scalloped potatoes were quite tasty. Higher marks due to my awesome waitress (Tiffany). Would consider coming again.

Yelp
The food at The Swiss is so amazing, hands down the best steak I have had on the central coast. Their burgers are amazing as well. This is the only restaurant I will order mozzarella sticks from. So good and made from scratch! The reason I put 4 stars instead of 5 was because of my experience last night. I went in to order food to go and attempted to order the same exact meal I ordered two weeks ago to the day which was the top sirloin steak with mixed vegetables and asked to have the vegetables grilled. I was served that no problem two weeks ago and when I asked for it last night the hostess said she was going to verify with someone in the kitchen that it was possible to get them grilled and I could hear the conversation from the kitchen where the hostess was told in a very rude and loud tone to where I could hear clearly that they would not grill the vegetables and that I was confusing them with Shaws. Although the hostess is not at fault for this situation and was very sweet, this experience alone makes me not want to return. If I am paying $100 for food, a simple request such as grilling vegetables shouldn't be an issue. The picture I attached includes the vegetables that I was served two weeks ago, and they were in fact grilled.

Yelp
I lived here for 2 years almost a decade ago and for some reason never tried this place out. What a mistake! Service was great! Food and drink was incredible. Started with their special drink that was Stella Cider and Crown Apple. The albondigas soup was the best I have ever had. For the main courses, my son had the filet which was cooked perfectly and was twice the size of something you would get at Fleming's. I tried the BBQ Blue which is a take on chicken cordon blue, but slathered with BBQ sauce, wrapped in bacon with ham and pepper Jack cheese in the middle. Yummy! Loved everything about this place.

Yelp
You can smell it from the parking lot. The sweet scent of Santa Maria bbq. I arrived at 5pm and there was a big dinner crowd waiting to get in. Looks like reservations are in order for the next dinner here. Server was friendly and kept my soda water refilled. I split a full rack of baby back ribs with my kid. The dinners make for a huge meal as you get a soup or salad, garlic bread, beans, and a side. For the side we split an order of rings and fries. Fries were the big steak fries similar to ones I've had at Red Robin. I like the crispy outside and fluffy inside. Delicious. Onion rings had a very crunchy panko batter which also reminded me of Red Robin onion rings. I liked the fried onion flavor but the rings seemed a bit over fried as batter was pretty hard. Ribs had a delicious flavor and aroma from being grilled over red oak and seasoned with black pepper, salt, and garlic. They would have been perfect with a bit less time on the grill as these ribs were well done. I love Santa Maria style bbq and The Swiss is one of my favorite spots to get it. The Hitching Post is another. https://www.hungryones.com/2017/01/the-hitching-post-casmalia-ca/

Yelp
They serve Santa Maria style barbecue at this restaurant. I had the tri-tip sandwich and onion rings and everything was delicious. The meat was smoked perfectly and very tender. And the beans were really yummy! The place was packed so clearly people clearly enjoy the food.
google avatar

Robbin M.

Yelp
Was not overly impressed with the very expensive food and average quality. Was just OK and you can tell they don't put any money back into the establishment because it's in a need of a serious remodel
google avatar

Carl N.

Yelp
Good service and pork Chops (2) that are even tastier than a steak They won't divulge the secret seasoning.

Yelp
I came in on a weeknight about 7:30 pm craving a steak and I had heard good things. The place was fairly empty and I decided to eat in the bar to watch a baseball game on the TV. That and I had a pub table all to myself. The bar was open and had an old school feel to it, which makes sense since the restaurant has been around for quite a while. I was not disappointed. I ordered the NY Steak Rare and it was a quality steak cooked to perfection. It came with my choice of soup or salad. I elected to go with the Green salad with Blue Cheese dressing, it was just ok. It also came with pinto beans and salsa and crispy bread. A true Santa Maria style dinner. For my choice of side, I went with the Onion Rings. They were about as good as they get. Crispy and flavorful outside and soft and juicy onion inside. I paired the meal with a Rancho Sisquoc Syrah and it hit the spot. I realize they were a little short handed with the bartender taking care of all three tables and people sitting at the bar, but it felt like I was waiting quite a while to give her my order, but after that everything came out like clockwork. I will definitely be back, maybe next time with the wife and try the dinning room. Cheers!
google avatar

Ron Y.

Yelp
Got this Tri-tip sandwich to go, ordered onion rings as side, automatically comes with pinquito beans. Lots of meat, their salsa, was okay. Beans looked really good but just okay. The best tasting onion rings with 2 servings of ranch dressing. I would definitely order the onion rings again.
google avatar

Debbie O.

Yelp
Their Filet is amazing. Wood fired. They make most of their salad dressings. We always order the soft pretzel. It comes with cheese that they make. Delicious.
google avatar

Phillis C.

Yelp
Just recently returned to The Swiss and was not disappointed! The steak bites are amazing! Staff is very friendly and offer good service.
google avatar

Steven H.

Yelp
Food was good. The broccoli cheddar soup was tasty but a bit thin for my likes. Server offered freshly ground pepper, which was a nice touch. The tri-tip sandwich was very large and loaded with several layers of sliced tri-tip. It was pretty good. They gave a nice little cup of salsa for the sandwich. The fresh grilled vegetables were delicious... broccoli, zucchini, and yellow squash. I really liked the pinquito beans, as they were tasty and properly cooked. My server was attentive and friendly. Ambiance was okay, nothing special.
google avatar

Eric H.

Yelp
Very friendly staff. Fast service, and the food is absolutely amazing. Their nachos are The Best I've ever had!!!!!!
google avatar

Eric R.

Yelp
The restaurant looked clean, was well lit and parking was easy. The salad and sides were excellent, everything was fresh and of good quality. Ashley E. Provided excellent customer service, was friendly and she was knowledgeable about the menu items. I would have given them 5 stars, but parts of my trip-tip were dry and chewy.
google avatar

Terrie V.

Yelp
We had a group of 10 seated in the bar area. It was perfect! Everyone ordered different food and everyone was very pleased. We will be back soon!
google avatar

Eddie S.

Yelp
We will definitely be returning. The food and service was outstanding! We visited in early Jan 2025 - our 1st time eating here. The reason why is the location - it's a little sketchy. We've been going to Jocko's, Hitching Post and Shaw's for decades (and the Far Western when it was in Guadalupe). Comparatively, the food and service was as good, if not better than, the other restaurants. The Swiss is pricey, but they all are. My rare steak was actually rare! My wife loved her medium steak too. I'm told the decor hasn't changed since the 80's if not earlier. We sat a booth, which was comfortable, unlike Jocko's whose tables and seats are outdoor picnic quality and cramped.
google avatar

Neal C.

Yelp
Stopped here for lunch because I had heard that the head chef at Jocko's had opened his own place. We split the steak bites appetizer & the tri tip sandwich with fries. Portions were quite large. The meat was tasty & the fries were delicious. Service was great. Ambiance was not bad--the lighting could have been dimmer.
google avatar

Lyra J.

Yelp
Excellent wait staff and the burger and fries are huge! Hot! And just plain fabulous! Chicken Alfredo with vegetables took two people to finish! Steak bite salad was perfection. The skinless Chicken breast with broccoli and asparagus was perfectly made. Highly recommend
google avatar

Janet K.

Yelp
Great food- steak cooked to perfection! Sides were delicious too!! Great service!! Can't wait to return!!

Yelp
My wife and I visited Santa Maria Friday June 27, 2025.I grew up here but now reside in the Bay area. I "used" to give gift cards from here for Christmas to my family. My wife ordered her usual Prime Rib sandwich which never seems to disappoint her. I also ordered my usual Rib Eye sandwich. I like Wren Pompeo who was here a month or so ago had the same experience with the most pathetic ribeye sandwich I have ever seen ($37.00). I noticed this on my last visit here as well but I thought it was just an anomaly. I have also noticed that the meat quality has not been as good as it was before the fire a few years ago. I also had the Caesar salad which was nice and cold, however it had the tiniest bit of dressing. I do not understand why so many people still flock here when the other choices here like Nipomo BBQ, Shaw's, Jocko's and even the strip mall restaurant BBQ Land are available. We did visit Nipomo BBQ and BBQ Land while we were also here. The quality, portions and pricing were tough to beat and we will visit them again on our next return. It's too bad because The Swiss used to be top notch but no more in my opinion. It's too bad the owner's and manager's don't respond to the reviews as most concerned establishments do! Good luck and I wish you the best. I will continue to scan your reviews and "maybe" one day we will try The Swiss again.
google avatar

Neville S.

Yelp
First time coming here. Really enjoyed the jalapeño poppers, deliciously wrapped in bacon. I ordered the tritip sandwich with fries and rings. Rings were good. Fries were good. Tritip sandwich was rich with flavor and had a good kick to it that I quite liked. We were a large group and Ashley E. served us without any issues, and kept making sure we had what we needed.
google avatar

Liz B.

Yelp
One of the best meals you're going to have in Santa Maria. Hands down! Love me some SWIS!

Matt B.

Yelp
Great food, great service, great owners. Best steakhouse with the best prices on the entire central coast.

Ronda M.

Yelp
This Was My 2 nd Visit , took my hub for his 1st time ........ needless to say he loved it ............ The Service was OUTSTANDING, we had Sonia & she was phenomenal, & so were the young men were awesome too , can't wait to go back & bring our friends W us

Robert C.

Yelp
Good food, very large portions. 31 bucks for 2 huge bone in chops, very tasty meal. I wonder how the steak is there
google avatar

Tony J.

Yelp
Really good place for authentic Santa Maria-style BBQ. I ordered a tri-tip sandwich which came with pinquito beans, fries, onion rings, ketchup, salsa, and white sauce. The tri-tip was sliced thinly and generously portions; it was surprisingly tender and juicy, with pretty much no hard-to-chew parts. The bread was nicely toasted and soaked up the juices and fat really well.
google avatar

Linda O.

Yelp
Santa Maria is known for its tri-tip but the Swiss has yummy entrees as well. We had the chicken Alfredo and it had a nice flavor. The sauce was a nice consistency. Veggies were nicely al dente. Our order was to-go. But we have sat in the restaurant and the service is fine. I would recommend The Swiss for a good meal.
google avatar

Yelp
Wow! What a meal!! This was our second time ever coming to Swiss, and boy was it DELICIOUS! We had some friends recommend the Steaks, but generally stated everything on their menu was great - and they were not wrong! We started with potato skins 9/10: super DELICOUS full of cheese and bacon bits! I only give it a 9 because they are so large and so filling I could only barely finish 1! , next the artichoke: 8/10: cooked perfectly! However not the best presentation but the dipping sauce was to die for! , and lastly Mozzarella sticks 10/10: husband said they were the bests he's had! Super moist and full - no dryness! Served with Marina, which is always my preference! I recommend adding a side of ranch for those bad boys as well! For main dishes, my husband and I shared the fillet and Lobster special - 11/10!!! Best lobster tail I've had! It's was Grilled to perfection and had a crisp grilled flavor that melts in your mouth. Our filet was also cooked perfectly, medium rare, with GREAT flavor and melt in your mouth texture - DELICIOUS - HIGHLY recommend! Lastly, most of our table ordered different cuts of steak and different ways of cooked - all turned out perfect to the desired doneness, and everyone was extremely pleased!!
google avatar

Sabrina S.

Yelp
I LOVE this place!!! I DO NOT like Mac n cheese but this is THE ONLY place I will choose Mac n cheese. The jalapeño Mac and cheese is SOOOO DELICIOUS!!! The steak bites and bread appetizer is a great option if you want steak but don't want it as your main entree. Everything is very flavorful. We travel from Ventura, CA to eat here.
google avatar

Joe M.

Yelp
In A world where you are competing with the big boys of steak (Jockos, hitchingpost, shaws, and farwest)its tuff to stay in the running to be one of the best ribeyes on the central coast you have to know what your doing and let me tell the swiss definitely knows what they are doing that ribeye came out cooked to perfection and the flavor had me saying I'm glad I canceled my reservation at jocks and tried this place
google avatar

Brenda V.

Yelp
Love this place. Steak is amazing! If you haven't tried the pork chops, you're missing out! Your sliders are good. Their steak bites are delicious. We've tried so much food there all delicious has not disappointed. My little one loves loves the mozzarella cheese sticks. And the drinks are great. The servers are amazing. Can't beat their service. we love that. It is kid friendly not too loud not too quiet. It's just perfect.
google avatar

Carrie R.

Yelp
Steak night! First time here, about 15-20 min wait time. Nice waitress, fast service. Shrimp cocktail was nice and generous Croutons on the salad on point! Ribeye is the one to get, but whoa! Salty! I'll ask if possible to reduce salt level next time. The flavor was great and the cook (med rare) was nice. Darn, no room for dessert Definitely will return and bring more people with us! Thanks Swiss team!!
google avatar

Paul B.

Yelp
Just the best Steak and Grill in Santa Maria - but problem still - it's just so very loud in there. Great food but you can't hear whats being said across the table from you! Not sure what can be done about that. When my wife and I have said enough to each other to have a great steak dinner at The Swiss, we go. We rarely take friends anymore, we can never hear what their saying across the table.

Joe G.

Yelp
My wife and I came in yesterday for drinks and appetizers before our play for the first time! Our waitress was Ciena and she made our experience at Swiss phenomenal! We ordered a Manhattan and Long island and both drinks were very tasty! Our waitresses went over the menu with us and was able to answer all our questions ( I was surprised she's only been there for a few weeks) we ended up going with her recommendations and got the steak plate , artichoke , and Eddie nachos. I must say the steak was delicious and we were both impressed! It was all around an amazing first time and we will definitely be back!
google avatar

Jim U.

Yelp
Old style steak house. Classic decor. Lots of choices. Good service. Only downside is if you want something other than steak!
