Last night I had dinner at one of my favorite restaurants, The Swiss. I enjoyed a delicious pastrami burger, a fresh salad, and my specialty cucumber vodka drink, made perfectly by the beautiful and talented bartender, Erica. Since we sat at the bar, she doubled as our server, making sure we had everything we needed. She even put on my football game for me and was extremely attentive, friendly, and professional throughout the evening.
However, while we were there, I witnessed something that left me shocked. I overheard what I assumed was a customer speaking to Erica in a belligerent and rude manner, loudly complaining about foam in a pitcher of beer. After watching her repour the pitcher, it was clear the issue wasn't her fault--the tap had blown. Still, the man continued to be disrespectful and condescending toward her.
After he left, I commented on how poorly he had treated her, only to learn from another employee that the man was actually the owner. I was stunned.
The food at The Shaw is phenomenal and the staff is exceptional, but it was incredibly disappointing to see the owner speak to one of his employees in such a demeaning way. Without your staff, you are nothing--and no matter how good the food is, respect for the people who make it all happen is non-negotiable. Sadly, because of this, I'll be taking my business elsewhere.
