18 Dishes to Add to Your California Bucket List | Eater

"The Central Coast is home to California’s own variety of Santa Maria–style barbecue, defined by its use of coastal live oak trees to fuel the open-pit grill. At The Swiss, the tri-tip sandwich (a cut often used outside of the region for ground beef rather than steak) is served with pinquito beans and salsa, two traditional sides that date back to when local rancheros first dug barbecue pits in the nineteenth century." - Vox Creative

I brought my whole family of 5. We loved the food, and the services were great. If you like steak, I highly recommend the filleminon, I ordered the 16-oz ribs eye, and it was great. Next time, I will order medium well. My son had the salmon, and it disappeared. Overall, it was a great experience. It was a little noisy and overwhelming for me, kinda set off my PTSD. But I would say 5 star. PS the try tip sandwich great.

Alex D.

Google
We got the chicken pesto mozzarella sandwich and a tri tip sandwich on garlic bread with mac and cheese and veggies as the sides. The chicken sandwich was quite tasty and juicy. There was not too much pesto so you could actually taste the other ingredients. The tri tip was bland, thankfully it was on the garlic bread so there was so actual flavor. The veggies were water logged. But the Mac and cheese would be the delight of any child.

The Oscar Filet and maple glazed Salmon were both very good. Service was friendly and efficient. House made mud pie finished the meal off nicely!

Great time. I eat out once every 3 months, took a friend here for dinner for his BD. Food was amazing, service was even better. Nothing but money well spent. Even treated myself to a Cadillac. Amazing service and great food for someone who is usually tight with going out.

Expect to pay $30-$50 per steak dinner with a side (baked potato not included). The flavors are great but the cook temp is not always perfect (my medium rare was a little more medium than I wanted). It's a small place with decent service, and good food. You'll pay 5 star prices for a place that's just not entirely 5 stars on its own. No major complaints at all (burgers are great).

Google
The coconut shrimp appetizer was delicious. They were big and very savory with the honey sauce. Great chicken sandwhich. The chicken was tender and soft. The chicken alfredo could have been better with some sauteed mushrooms. The veggies it came with was just zuchini and yellow squash. We got the chocolate cake and mud pie for dessert and we mixed both and it gave it a nice Lindr Lindor milk chocolate flavor. Very good service and atmosphere. We would come again.

Took my wife for her birthday dinner lastnight, service was great everyone was very nice but my bbq blue was terrible. The chicken was dry the ham they stuffed it with was bad the Rice pilaf was horrible like how do u mess up rice?! My wife got a 14oz steak which she loved and that’s all that matters to me. Was just really shocked how bad my meal was I mean it was 33 bucks!

I was in Santa Maria for the first time. I asked the Santa Maria people in the class where to go for tri-tip, since tri-tip originated in Santa Maria. The Swiss Restaurant was a near unanimous recommendation. I went for lunch. I got the half-pound tri-tip sandwich with onion rings as my side; it also comes with a side of pinquito beans. Your sandwich comes with a ramekin of salsa. They make their own onion rings; they were fantastic. The tri-tip sandwich was one of the best I’ve ever had. I don’t know how to describe the salsa other than to say it’s very, very flavorful; it does not have very much heat, which is perfect for this sandwich. The bread was great — fresh, stood up to the liquid that came off the salsa without falling apart. I liked it so much I went back two days later for dinner. I got the same sandwich and it was just as good. Dinner comes with soup or salad; I ordered the broccoli cheddar soup, which is made from scratch; excellent. The garlic mashed potatoes didn’t have enough garlic for my taste, but they were good and obviously made from scratch. I highly recommend The Swiss for their tri-tip sandwich!

Yelp
Let us avoid any confusion because atmosphere wise the Swiss is not a fine dining experience. The dining room is cavernous but plain. It has booths, but the one we were issued was right across from the food servers station. I don't go out to look at some food server's butt. My love's salmon caesar salad was tasty as was the dressing, but the lettuce was worn out. My chicken linguini and vegatables were very good. But the place is just a too bit noisy. The ruckus from the bar and the sound of the dishes being washed was just a bit much. It is a great place for large noisy groups, but less so for couples in love.

Yelp
Came here for lunch and I was impressed. Again. We got the Tri Tip Sandwiches. Super tender meat and bread. Full of flavor. Half French fries and onion rings. The pinquito beans were on point too. Service was quick and attentive Restaurant was clean and packed I will be back!

Yelp
Last night I had dinner at one of my favorite restaurants, The Swiss. I enjoyed a delicious pastrami burger, a fresh salad, and my specialty cucumber vodka drink, made perfectly by the beautiful and talented bartender, Erica. Since we sat at the bar, she doubled as our server, making sure we had everything we needed. She even put on my football game for me and was extremely attentive, friendly, and professional throughout the evening. However, while we were there, I witnessed something that left me shocked. I overheard what I assumed was a customer speaking to Erica in a belligerent and rude manner, loudly complaining about foam in a pitcher of beer. After watching her repour the pitcher, it was clear the issue wasn't her fault--the tap had blown. Still, the man continued to be disrespectful and condescending toward her. After he left, I commented on how poorly he had treated her, only to learn from another employee that the man was actually the owner. I was stunned. The food at The Shaw is phenomenal and the staff is exceptional, but it was incredibly disappointing to see the owner speak to one of his employees in such a demeaning way. Without your staff, you are nothing--and no matter how good the food is, respect for the people who make it all happen is non-negotiable. Sadly, because of this, I'll be taking my business elsewhere.

Yelp
Excellent food and great service. Many items house made. For lunch recommend the chicken breast sandwich and steak sandwich.

Yelp
I came in with a reservation on a Saturday night and a server named Carly. She was friendly and attentive, as were the bussers. My daughter had the children's cheeseburger and I had the bbq chicken that was stuffed with ham and cheese (I forget the name but it was wonderful). The ambiance I would describe as country simple. The restaurant seems suited for large parties which is great!

Yelp
The Swiss was jumping on a Tuesday night in Santa Maria. People were so happy. The staff were walking fast, all such kind people. The food was so delicious and plentiful. Fun and interesting art on the wall. Just a wonderful vibe there. I got to have some zuppa tuscana. I couldnt believe it was so delicious. All around a fabulous experience . I loved it. Laura
google avatar

Bonnie A.

Yelp
The food is great. Definitely a staple of Santa Maria. However, I got charged $17 to substitute chicken breast for tri tip on a salad? This makes no sense. The person who took my order could have informed me of this upcharge when placing the order. INSANE

Yelp
Everyone enjoyed their meal . My shrimp cocktail was slimy . Will be back but not ordering this.

Yelp
My visit to The Swiss was because of some of my customers that told me I had to go here during my visit, and oh boy What a find! I've already been here twice! My first visit, I walked in before an hour before closing. Not at all what I expected from seeing the outside of the building first. The area, and building itself gave me very dive bar aesthetics. However, I was told I needed to come in and have the prime rib dip so I was determined. The inside is half restaurant and have bar, separated by a wall. Both sides, in my opinion, looking significantly different. So whether you're after bar vibes or a sit down restaurant, The Swiss has a something for you. I chose the bar, everyone was friendly, and the bartenders very attentive. I of course ordered the prime rib dip. For $25 it comes with the sandwhich, soup or salad and a side of your choice. Mashed potatoes, baked potato or fries. The soups are delicious, my first go around I had the chicken tortilla soup, second was the Toscana. Absolutely phenomenal, what a way to set the mood! The sandwhich itself is up there with some of the best French dip sandwiches I've ever had. Top 3 for sure! The meat is so tender, comes with mushrooms and onions and the au jus gives they give you to dip it in changes the flavor just enough to make each bite different. I would suggest adding cheese (Swiss) to it. I did not have it that was the first time, so that addition my second time also made it a different experience. I love the Swiss, they of course have many other options that also looked delicious coming out of the kitchen, but I needed to come back for my fix and I will be back again!

Yelp
I came here to have dinner and paid a pretty price we were still finishing our drink drinks and they asked us to leave that they needed our table.. I paid 300 for dinner so rude Will not be coming back Shaw's is better anyway

Yelp
I love that the portions are large and you don't have to pay extra for a nice dinner salad. We prefer to eat in the cozy bar. My husband says that the meat is always cooked to perfection.

Yelp
Went to the Swiss for my Father in laws Birthday. We had a larger party and the service was quick and responsive. Everybody's food was cooked and flavored well. An all around great dining experience.

Yelp
It was our 2nd visit to Santa Maria & this was still the restaurant recommended by the concierge. We wanted to have both specials so we ordered the Prime Rib slider appetizer & 2 Santa Maria Tri Tip sandwiches. It was the perfect portions for our party of 4. Meat was flavorful without needing additional sauces. It is as good as the 1st time 2 years ago. Service was super friendly & attentive. Our server really knew the menu & spoke so proudly of it. It was so impressive & comforting.

Yelp
Had Christmas Eve dinner here. I ordered the grilled Chelean Sea Bass. I never had it grilled before but it was absolutely delicious. I swear they marinated it in butter. It as fantastic. The servers were all amazing. For a dinner out by myself, it was a great evening.

Steve D.

Yelp
I visited Santa Maria for my second time this year. I try different places. The Swiss has the best tri tip sandwich so far, it comes with Pinquito beans and they will give you extra if asked. The Steak Fries were great also! Service too ! Rancho Nipomo BBQ is a close second but Swiss is the first.. Also to you visitors stay away from BBQ Land complete garbage to the Swiss, I will always come back every time.....

Yelp
Good customer service the food was good. It was my first time coming here. The food was excellent i had baked potato and baby back ribs.

Yelp
Great food. Great staff. The steak bite platter and coconut shrimp are awesome. Great portions. Always leave with a smile

Yelp
So disappointed. I picked up two family meals, to - go, for a customer meeting. The restaurant refused to give plates or utensils- not even an open to buy some then I found out they do not give serving spoons for the beans, salsa and salad dressing. The meat was NOT cut and the tri tip was so chewy it could barely be cut. Service was great. I spent $240 and will never return
google avatar

Yelp
The Oscar Filet and the Maple glazed Salmon was excellent! They both paired well with Rancho Sisquoc Merlot. Service was on point and very friendly. Even the bus person was helpful and friendly. We had house made mud pie for dessert. Pleasantly surprised at the overall experience.

Yelp
Great service, tri-tip wrap was delicious, and be sure to order the grilled artichoke l

Yelp
Food: 4.5. Came by on a Saturday around 5 pm. Place was only slightly busy at that time but got busier later. I ordered their Beef Ribs. Ribs came out timely and at the right temperature. Ribs were excellent. Meat was so flavorful with the right amount of fat. Service was excellent as usual.

Melissa P.

Yelp
This was my first time here and holy moly I was impressed with the service. From arriving to leaving, it was what I wish I could get every time I go out to eat. Friendly greetings when got there to being seated right away and team work is spot on here. There were other team members filling in the gaps for the waitress, which made the whole dining experience so enjoyable and made me want to tip extra. Oh yeah, and the filet mignon was perfect and delicious, as was everything else! I will be back!

Eileen C.

Yelp
Were out for a Sunday drive today and ended up in Santa Maria. Looking for lunch with local flair. Found Swiss Restaurant on Broadway and gave them a try. We were so impressed by the overall experience. The wait staff was friendly, efficient and fast. The tri tip sandwich was outstanding. 1/2 pound of tri tip for $20.00, wow. We choose the caesar salad and came with qinquito beans both included in that price again wow. Since we share the lunch our waitress even separated the sandwich and gave us an extra side of beans. Tri tip was juicy flavorful and tender, couldn't asked for anything more. No wonder they have been in business since 1941. Great job.

Yelp
The swiss is sooooo fire. Been going for almost 15 years. Got lunch to go today and a 10/10 like always!

Yelp
I can't believe I've never been to this restaurant. I met someone at the podiatrist office and she told me about it. So I made reservations for my husband and I to go. Outside and inside is non-descriptive. But the service, food and pricing was excellent. Our server was Carly and she was very nice and told us about the nightly specials. I had an old-fashioned drink which was pretty good and reasonable. My husband wasn't real hungry so he got the pork chop that came with salad and vegetables. The pork chop was so big he had leftovers. There is another dish with two pork chops and you get more with it. I went big time for the 14 ounce filet mignon. It also came with a salad, bread, beans and salsa. You got to pick from a wide variety of sides, I kept seeing onion rings go by, so I picked that and did not disappoint. So I had leftovers also no room for dessert. Definitely want to take my grandkids here for a family meal because you get, for example, chicken and ribs and lots of sides so they get to pick whatever they want.

Yelp
I lived here for 2 years almost a decade ago and for some reason never tried this place out. What a mistake! Service was great! Food and drink was incredible. Started with their special drink that was Stella Cider and Crown Apple. The albondigas soup was the best I have ever had. For the main courses, my son had the filet which was cooked perfectly and was twice the size of something you would get at Fleming's. I tried the BBQ Blue which is a take on chicken cordon blue, but slathered with BBQ sauce, wrapped in bacon with ham and pepper Jack cheese in the middle. Yummy! Loved everything about this place.

Yelp
You can smell it from the parking lot. The sweet scent of Santa Maria bbq. I arrived at 5pm and there was a big dinner crowd waiting to get in. Looks like reservations are in order for the next dinner here. Server was friendly and kept my soda water refilled. I split a full rack of baby back ribs with my kid. The dinners make for a huge meal as you get a soup or salad, garlic bread, beans, and a side. For the side we split an order of rings and fries. Fries were the big steak fries similar to ones I've had at Red Robin. I like the crispy outside and fluffy inside. Delicious. Onion rings had a very crunchy panko batter which also reminded me of Red Robin onion rings. I liked the fried onion flavor but the rings seemed a bit over fried as batter was pretty hard. Ribs had a delicious flavor and aroma from being grilled over red oak and seasoned with black pepper, salt, and garlic. They would have been perfect with a bit less time on the grill as these ribs were well done. I love Santa Maria style bbq and The Swiss is one of my favorite spots to get it. The Hitching Post is another. https://www.hungryones.com/2017/01/the-hitching-post-casmalia-ca/

Yelp
I've been craving a steak for so long and this place did not disappoint. Steak was cooked to order mashed potatoes, blue cheese on the side fantastic.
google avatar

Mike L.

Yelp
Came on a Friday evening at 5pm. Moderately busy, but was seated within 10 mins. Pretty fair sized menu, but finally decided on the special: Filet and lobster tail with addition of blue cheese, sauteed mushrooms, and sauteed onions. The meal comes with garlic bread, choice of side, soup or salad, and beans and salsa. I chose the clam chowder soup and it was a nice start to my meal. Everything else arrived in decent time. The filet (med rare) was adequate and the lobster tail was seasoned well. Scalloped potatoes were quite tasty. Higher marks due to my awesome waitress (Tiffany). Would consider coming again.

Yelp
November 2nd 8:50 p.m. I just took my wife to eat at the Swiss chalet in Santa Maria for the first time. I was grateful that there was a restaurant where we could get a steak. We ordered a barbecued artichoke for an appetizer It came so raw we couldn't even pull the pedals off. The kind waitress took it back and off the bill Next came our entree which was a steak and vegetables. The broccoli was so raw I almost chipped my tooth. It was ridiculous. The steak was mediocre at best. I ordered garlic Mashers and dove into them because I was hungry. I found a weird stringy thing that had black hairs on it that had nothing to do with garlic or potatoes. Slightly embarrassed because this was the third complaint in 15 minutes. The waitress was very kind and helpful but when I handed her the weird black hairy stringy thing she looked shocked. She came back and said the cook was apologetic for the third problem. And explained it was asparagus. I've never seen anything on asparagus that look like that to me. It was disgusting and I'm still thinking about throwing up. I heard the Swiss was good but obviously the cooks suck. The food sucks Will never go back MJD

Yelp
while helping a friend house hunt out of town, we decided we had earned a great dinner and our agent referred us over to the Swiss restaurant. It did not disappoint. We had fantastic steaks done to perfection.

Norma D.

Yelp
Passing through town. Tried this restaurant. Ordered pork chop dinner. Pork chop was moist & delicious. The vegetables were amazing. Also ordered penne pasta & sausage dinner. It was great. Garlic bread was also very good. All staff friendly and server knowledgeable. Wish we had a place like this close to us!!

Yelp
I came in on a weeknight about 7:30 pm craving a steak and I had heard good things. The place was fairly empty and I decided to eat in the bar to watch a baseball game on the TV. That and I had a pub table all to myself. The bar was open and had an old school feel to it, which makes sense since the restaurant has been around for quite a while. I was not disappointed. I ordered the NY Steak Rare and it was a quality steak cooked to perfection. It came with my choice of soup or salad. I elected to go with the Green salad with Blue Cheese dressing, it was just ok. It also came with pinto beans and salsa and crispy bread. A true Santa Maria style dinner. For my choice of side, I went with the Onion Rings. They were about as good as they get. Crispy and flavorful outside and soft and juicy onion inside. I paired the meal with a Rancho Sisquoc Syrah and it hit the spot. I realize they were a little short handed with the bartender taking care of all three tables and people sitting at the bar, but it felt like I was waiting quite a while to give her my order, but after that everything came out like clockwork. I will definitely be back, maybe next time with the wife and try the dinning room. Cheers!

Shannon M.

Yelp
They serve Santa Maria style barbecue at this restaurant. I had the tri-tip sandwich and onion rings and everything was delicious. The meat was smoked perfectly and very tender. And the beans were really yummy! The place was packed so clearly people clearly enjoy the food.
google avatar

Consuelo M.

Yelp
My roommate raved about the tri tip sandwich so i picked up a sandwich for lunch today and I was super bummed that it was soo salty. I gave it 3 stars because the onion rings were bomb and the service was great. I know that it could have possibly been a different chef or maybe sinus issues messing up the chefs taste buds. I'll give it another try maybe at a different time of day or something.
google avatar

Victor T.

Yelp
The Swiss has become a go to place for my family and sometimes I go with friends as well. The restaurant has a great old school steak house vibe and if you want a bar setting, it's available too. Our favorites there include the grilled chicken salad, the full rack of baby back ribs, tri tip sandwiches, and the mushroom Swiss burger. The entrees here are large, but they are well worth it and great for sharing or splitting a meal with someone. The Edie nachos are a fantastic appetizer. Lastly, the staff is amazing and friendly. They do a great job taking care of their customers and they offer top notch service for a wonderful dining experience. I cannot recommend the Swiss enough if you are looking for BBQ and other options in Santa Maria.
google avatar

Laurie M.

Yelp
The steak sandwich and the Ortega burger are our go to order. Can't beat the ribeye flavor. I'd go there everyday for lunch if I could. One of my 3 favorite restaurants in Santa Maria.
google avatar

Erick C.

Yelp
The service was mediocre due to the attitude of the staff. From the start, the host was really rude and there was no wait but they still didn't let us in within the quoted time. Food was cold. Wouldn't recommend.
google avatar

Robbin M.

Yelp
Was not overly impressed with the very expensive food and average quality. Was just OK and you can tell they don't put any money back into the establishment because it's in a need of a serious remodel
google avatar

Steve T.

Yelp
To start with we went yesterday around 5:00 and the food was awesome. Our server was also great. My only issue was when we got there it wasn't busy and there were two hostesses. One was helping customers get their to go orders. The other looked at me and a my wife and instead of helping us she sat down on a chair and got on her cell phone ignoring us and starting watching a movie. Unbelievable. Terrible customer service and just a bad look. Again The Swiss has amazing food and is a great place they just need to insure customers come before getting on a cell phone.

Mike D.

Yelp
Ohhh such FANTASTIC FOOD! My Steak was perfect, my wife's ribeye also! Salads were a good size fresh and delicious too. The potatoe skin appetizer was wonderful ! We went home with plenty of food for another meal. Prices were OK for the quality and taste of the food too! Excellent friendly Service, and ambiance too! We WILL be BACK as this is the Best steak we've had ever since Tahoe Joes closed in SLO!
google avatar

Megan J.

Yelp
The food at The Swiss is so amazing, hands down the best steak I have had on the central coast. Their burgers are amazing as well. This is the only restaurant I will order mozzarella sticks from. So good and made from scratch! The reason I put 4 stars instead of 5 was because of my experience last night. I went in to order food to go and attempted to order the same exact meal I ordered two weeks ago to the day which was the top sirloin steak with mixed vegetables and asked to have the vegetables grilled. I was served that no problem two weeks ago and when I asked for it last night the hostess said she was going to verify with someone in the kitchen that it was possible to get them grilled and I could hear the conversation from the kitchen where the hostess was told in a very rude and loud tone to where I could hear clearly that they would not grill the vegetables and that I was confusing them with Shaws. Although the hostess is not at fault for this situation and was very sweet, this experience alone makes me not want to return. If I am paying $100 for food, a simple request such as grilling vegetables shouldn't be an issue. The picture I attached includes the vegetables that I was served two weeks ago, and they were in fact grilled.
google avatar

Ron Y.

Yelp
Got this Tri-tip sandwich to go, ordered onion rings as side, automatically comes with pinquito beans. Lots of meat, their salsa, was okay. Beans looked really good but just okay. The best tasting onion rings with 2 servings of ranch dressing. I would definitely order the onion rings again.
google avatar

Debbie O.

Yelp
Their Filet is amazing. Wood fired. They make most of their salad dressings. We always order the soft pretzel. It comes with cheese that they make. Delicious.
google avatar

Steven H.

Yelp
Food was good. The broccoli cheddar soup was tasty but a bit thin for my likes. Server offered freshly ground pepper, which was a nice touch. The tri-tip sandwich was very large and loaded with several layers of sliced tri-tip. It was pretty good. They gave a nice little cup of salsa for the sandwich. The fresh grilled vegetables were delicious... broccoli, zucchini, and yellow squash. I really liked the pinquito beans, as they were tasty and properly cooked. My server was attentive and friendly. Ambiance was okay, nothing special.
google avatar

Carl N.

Yelp
Good service and pork Chops (2) that are even tastier than a steak They won't divulge the secret seasoning.
google avatar

Eric R.

Yelp
The restaurant looked clean, was well lit and parking was easy. The salad and sides were excellent, everything was fresh and of good quality. Ashley E. Provided excellent customer service, was friendly and she was knowledgeable about the menu items. I would have given them 5 stars, but parts of my trip-tip were dry and chewy.
google avatar

Eddie S.

Yelp
We will definitely be returning. The food and service was outstanding! We visited in early Jan 2025 - our 1st time eating here. The reason why is the location - it's a little sketchy. We've been going to Jocko's, Hitching Post and Shaw's for decades (and the Far Western when it was in Guadalupe). Comparatively, the food and service was as good, if not better than, the other restaurants. The Swiss is pricey, but they all are. My rare steak was actually rare! My wife loved her medium steak too. I'm told the decor hasn't changed since the 80's if not earlier. We sat a booth, which was comfortable, unlike Jocko's whose tables and seats are outdoor picnic quality and cramped.
