Szechuan Bistro Review - Chinatown - Chicago - The Infatuation

"This is the newest stall in the Richland Center food court. And like a magician’s sleeve stuffed with Szechuan food instead of scarves, the variety of dishes coming out of their tiny kitchen is breathtaking. The menu is incredibly long, with dishes ranging from dan dan noodles and kung pao chicken to spicy frog and sesame balls. Everything we’ve ordered has a wonderful amount of mouthnumbing spice, and if you eat there, your spicy shrimp will be plated on an actual metal serving platter instead of a plastic dish. photo credit: Derrick Koch" - Adrian Kane

Delicious. Great service and awesome food. We have been truly impressed by their ability to make a large range of items gluten free for my wife. Rarely do you find a Chinese restaurant do this. This is quickly become one of our go to restaurants now. Jia You Szechuan Bistro! 💯

Veggie lo mein and mapo tofu both were very well made with perfect spice level. They offer many vegetarian options.

My wife and I will always make it a point to stop whenever we’re in OKC. This is the best Chinese restaurant! They have both the American favorites as well as the authentic dishes. My wife really likes the spicy Szechuan style shredded chicken for the flavors and presentation that is always perfectly cooked. I like the spicy fish soup with vegetables (C48 on the menu), hold the tofu. The portion sizes are huge and you’ll have another meal to take home. Try the chicken dumplings and hot sauce as an appetizer. You won’t be disappointed.

Google
Great atmosphere and nice setup. The Shrimp Fried Rice plate was delicious and blended well with extra shrimp. Most places I’ve been they put way more rice than shrimp on the plate, even when you ask for extra shrimp. The plate is large enough to share.

Google
Best Chinese in the metro. Try the chicken lettuce wraps! The egg drop soup is second to none as well--none of this "canned corn" nonsense that you find in some places. Menu has an amazing variety including classics like Fried Rice, Chow Mein/Lo Mein, Broccoli Beef, and Moo Goo Gai Pan... But also some typical Chinese dishes for those who prefer authenticity. Service is excellent. They keep your water glass full, take away used dishes pretty much immediately, and they're sweet people as well. First time we went there we asked for a recommendation, and the server told us, "try the eggplant clay pot." Wait, what? Eggplant? In Chinese? But we tried it, it was fabulous, and now we order it every time. One of our other favorites is the Singapore Chow Mein Fun noodles.

Really amazing food! Everything tasted fresh and was flavorful! You can tell they use a good seasoned woks. Definitely will come back anytime I’m in the city for sure!

Google
Absolutely amazing experience at Szechuan Bistro! The food was exceptional—flavorful and perfectly spicy. The ambiance was welcoming and cozy, making it an ideal spot for both team lunches and family dinners. Can't recommend it highly enough! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Yelp
To go or sit down, some of the best Asian food in OKC! Comparably priced to other places, and the people are friendly... ordered to go on Xmas day, and the food was hot, fresh, and ready in no time. Return trip guaranteed!

Yelp
I have been here several times and it never disappoints! Food is always delicious with fresh vegetables. Or favorites are the garlic chicken, orange chicken, and Mongolian beef with white rice. Service is attentive and friendly. The building is starting to look a little older but don't let that deter you from trying good food.

Yelp
Great food and awesome staff. Best chinese restaurant in OKC. Very peaceful and comfortable too.

Yelp
We visited this restaurant on Christmas Eve after services. As one of the few restaurants open on Christmas Eve, the restaurant was very, very busy. But the staff greeted us very kindly and handled the large crowds with skill and efficiency. We were well cared for by very warm and attentive staff. The seating is comfortable. And the food - oh the food here is EXCELLENT. I had the chicken and eggplant in garlic sauce, which is utterly delicious. Our group also enjoyed steamed dumplings and two of their excellent soups. Others in our party also loved their meals - orange beef (so tender) and sesame chicken (the best they'd ever had). This restaurant is a gem. We will be back and will recommend to all our friends.

Yelp
Clean, bright, modern atmosphere, friendly staff. Didn't get a pic of the food we had, but it was delicious. We had a small Shrimp & Scallop Soup (was enough for 6!) that was a typical Chinese egg soup base and very fresh tasting. Tiny bits of seafood but they were there. Also had "dried" string beans (fresh wok fried green beans) with tiny bits of pork, black mushrooms and fresh ginger - loved that combination! Unlike other Chinese restaurants, they weren't drowning in oil. You could see the char marks on the beans. My favorite Chinese green beans, and I've had them lots! They have brown rice and it was perfectly cooked and nutty flavored. The waitress was super - helped us with our questions and recommended red vinegar for the soup - that's a new trick for us and a great recommendation. She also brought me chili oil that is house made and she was correct when she said it was hot! A little goes a long way. The chili paste type sauce on the table was too sweet for me. We will be back!

Yelp
I saw raving reviews so decided to give this place a try. We started out with the fried squid (not good at all) which didn't even come with a dip. Our friends had the chicken dumplings which were good. For main dishes I had the seasame chicken and my husband had the orange chicken. The orange chicken was better but they were both sub par. Barely any chicken in it and bland salty flavors. The fried rice on the side was good though. The service was good but we will not be back. Didn't care for the flavors.

Yelp
This place was nice, but the food was a little underwhelming. We went on a Sunday right when it opened so there was no wait. The service was good; the waiters were timely and attentive and even packaged up our leftovers which was nice. We ordered the smoked duck, szechuan beef special and the Singapore noodles which is a staple for us if it's on the menu. The duck was very good, however there weren't many pieces of meat and most of it was drowned in the cabbage and bean sprouts. There were WAY more veggies than meat in this dish. The Szechuan beef could have used a bit more salt. The Szechuan spice was HOT, but lacked flavor in my opinion. It was just dry heat. And if you know Szechuan peppercorn heat, it pretty much numbs your mouth and in this dish it does so almost immediately so we couldn't even taste it after the first few bites. The meat prices were VERY tender though. Our favorite dish was the Singapore noodles! Flavorful & a large quantity!

Yelp
Do not sleep on this place!! I've never had anything that wasn't delicious and as well-prepared as their Chinese food. Lunch specials are definitely enough for one meal and their supper meals are phenomenal. I can be picky about egg and spring rolls, but theirs is always on point. If you're looking for Chinese, go here!! Also, their garlic chili sauce is *soo tasty*
google avatar

Yelp
BEST CHINESE FOOD I'VE EVER HAD. PERIOD. You'll spend a little but it's totally worth it. I just had lunch and have plenty for dinner. Ordered an extra egg drop soup to take home :) I have tried 15 plus places around OKC. Nothing can beat this. The other Szechaun in the Asian district is good as well, but this beats them

Yelp
The place we go for really good food. We meet good friends, usually there's 6 to 8 of us. We order different dishes so we can sample a variety of flavors. The food is always fresh and delicious. Last but not least, the service is excellent, they are always friendly and courteous with a huge menu.

Yelp
Good tasting food, large portions, fair price. Beer wasn't very cold though and my tea/ cup tasted like soap

Yelp
Every single time I get food from here it's always amazing. Take out or dine in I've never had a bad experience. The restaurant itself is quite nice and normally quiet enough to have a nice conversation in. Service is always attentive and speedy as well. Probably my favorite restaurant in the city

Yelp
Definitely see why this is a go-to spot for people around here. A pleasantly robust selection of a wide array of dishes. Even the basic sweet and sour soup had a robust flavor. On top of that the whole experience was very pleasant from fast wait staff that took our orders promptly and made sure we were constantly looked in on and food that came out very quickly. Also I appreciate that they do seem to be incredibly welcoming with their little touches. For Christmas they had little gift card scratch off things they were giving out that you could get free items for another visit. Which is just a fun little addition. Them going out of their way to celebrate shows that they care about making a good impression. That kind of approach usually means you will have the same care anytime you come here.
google avatar

Holley M.

Yelp
Great place! New to us. We went for Christmas and it did not disappoint. I'll order a different dish next time just to change it up.

Yelp
Best Chinese food in Okc. Yummy fried rice with lots of veggies, incredible egg drop soup, fried dumplings and lettuce wraps great. Fast delivery and good prices. Try this place!

Yelp
Good food, highly recommended when you around the neighborhood. We ordered hot n spicy fish soup, eggplant, and lamb on stick. All are good, for the lamb will be nice if they cook a bit longer so it's crispy out n juicy inside.

Yelp
Awesome food! It's our only place for Oriental food, even though it's 22 miles away. Service is always prompt and friendly.

Yelp
I've spent well over $1,000 at Szechuan Bistro over the last few years. I only know that because I checked my budget app today (YNAB yo. IYKYK...). So obviously, I like the food. But looking at the budget is definitely making me realize that I need to eat there a lot less (if for no other reason than to just... stop throwing money at spicy Chinese food...). Also, it has confirmed a trend that I'd been wondering about for a while. Which is that Szechuan Bistro has ratcheted up their prices pretty drastically in a very short period of time. We almost always get the same two dishes every time. (1) Hot & Spicy Boiled Beef + (2) one of two dishes (usually Chicken & Eggplant in Garlic Sauce, or Shredded Pork & Bamboo Shoots). The total always hovered around $29-30 all through 2019 and 2020. Near the end of 2021 though, the total for those dishes jumped to $35. Okay. Fine. Inflation. I get it. But my most recent visit (last week), those two dishes totaled just a few cents short of $40. The Hot & Spicy Boiled Beef went from like... $13 to $20 in approximately one year. Also, the 'Pork & Bamboo Shoots' should now be called 'Bamboo Shoots with smatterings of Pork' because gyp-city. Szechuan's pricing isn't just due to inflation at this point. It's price-gouging. Just because you have fewer customers, punishing the loyal customers like me who kept coming back (and spending A LOT of money) even through a pandemic is... a thing you can do, I guess, but it's a great way to kill my loyalty. This is probably good for my budget anyway. I like (correction, love) Szechuan Bistro, but the prices are approaching egregious now, and they're not the only Szechuan place in town anymore. A few years ago, this was our only option, but now you have Chuanyu Fusion, or Szechuan Story as well. Those places are gonna start showing up in my budget a lot more going forward.

Yelp
Wow, this is the best lunch spot! I was going to Costco and saw this restaurant and looked it up, and it has 4.5 stars, so I decided to try it. We ordered two lunch specials, Kung pao chicken and general chicken, and came with delicious soup and fried rice. Everything was very tasty and had enough leftovers for dinner! I'm craving it right now typing this review! Yum.

Cheryl H.

Yelp
My favorite Chinese food in Okc! My husband's favorite dish is Szechuan beef. If you like spicy, you will love it. I love the orange beef and the chicken chow mein however, I've never had a bad meal there.
google avatar

Jack S.

Yelp
Just phenomenal food, authentic Asian recipes perfectly prepared. Probably the best in OKC for authentic Chinese.
google avatar

Justin B.

Yelp
Ok we came here based on reviews. It's decent. Crab Rangoon 3 stars, pan fried pork dumplings 4 stars, sesame chicken 3 stars, combo lo mien 4 stars. If I could give it a 3.5 I would.

N K.

Yelp
So, if temperature is your highest priority, you won't be let down. I've ordered twice from this place now, and it's piping hot every time. BUT, if quality and taste are important to you, this is not the place.
google avatar

Niel M.

Yelp
Favorite local Chinese spot. Fried rice is amazing and so is all the other options! Always go back

Yelp
The prices are waaaaaaaay too high for the portions they send out. Also, I ordered for my co-workers (Spending OVER 65$ as a 1stX customer) who I treated to lunch because one of them, who is from Hawaii said this place was "said" to be top notch. Eeeeehhh!! Wrong! She ordered beef chow-mein... Ehhhh! This over-priced item had barely ANY beef. And the beef they DID have were little baby- (super baby) pieces of beef in the container, and NOT MUCH at that. They had more bamboo shoots, onions and celery waaaay more than beef. She wouldn't eat it, kept saying continuously in her disappointment, "That's not chow-mein!" Mind you, it was SHE who suggested we ordered from this sad, reason for consideration in the first place. My other co-worker wanted to know why I didn't just bring it back. Answer: Why bother, if they are like this with delivery, why bother... BUT I WILL NEVER order from this place again. The LARGE Combination Fried rice was DARK and not ANYTHING that I am used to getting from other Take-out. The PRICE $13.00? Really? I NEVER pay over $8.00 from other places, and a MUCH larger container... Key word ==MUCH larger. Then the rice is low quality. I am of Filipino-Hawaiian Chinese mixed... So you get the picture. A DISGRACE to your family and you should be punished according to our Asian and Island family standards. NO where in the earth is RICE that expensive. Really? STOP IT! The Combination LoMein - though tasty, was again, waaaay too small a container for the price. You only get one chance with me. I am Asian/Island, but I was raised in NEW ORLEANS.... and you KNOW how they do it!! BIG. Stop cheating people out of their money. They pay 100% of the price, why give them only 40% of the quality & quantity? All about the money, and not the person while you keep banking our money. Last negative: If you stop sending out a kazillion soy sauce packets that we don't really need, maybe you can SAVE on all the portions that you keep being stingy with. POOR Representation for a 1st time customer; oh wait, mt apologies: LAST TIME- customer.

Yelp
We had heard good things and decided to give it a try although we typically always go to another place in Edmond. We were completely disappointed. The food was just not good. Sweet and sour chicken was hard as a rock. Worth a try but not for us.
google avatar

Tim T.

Yelp
Very good Chinese food, especially due to their spicier Szechuan offerings - this place and also Szechuan Story in the Asian District may be the only two Szechuan themed restaurants in OKC. They also have excellent noodle dishes (like Singaporean curry rice noodles or noodles in spicy oil sauce) in addition to staples like salted fried fish, chili oil dumplings, potstickers, and Mongolian beef. It's a bit out of the way from the city (close to Masa ramen & sushi however) but certainly worth the drive!

Brandon B.

Yelp
Struggled to find a good Chinese restaurant since moving to Oklahoma. Best place I've had by a mile!
google avatar

Yelp
Had pickup orders here a lot. The pork lo mein is fantastic. Egg drop soup is yummy as well.
google avatar

Yelp
My wife and I love this place. She is very critical of Chinese cuisine because she can cook it better than most. We enjoy the fish in clay pot and egg plant w spicy pork. You can get very authentic dishes here as well as the American versions.

J B.

Yelp
Love everything very authentic Nice cozy atmosphere Server was really accommodating and nice

Yelp
I've struck out a lot with Szechuan cooking in the past, plus I don't care for mouth melting amounts of heat. SO, I tried a few of their Americanized dishes. I was surprised to find food below average. The chicken was bad, it tasted old, very stale and hard to chew. The sauce on it was savory, not much flavor, no sweetness nor spiciness, just boring. On top of that, price was higher and portion was smaller than competitors. It was a disappointment. (Plus, ask my husband, who ate most of the chicken, how his intestines still feel now three days later). Hot and sour soup looked alright, but badly needed seasonings. I poured some soy sauce in it and that helped some. Fried rice was okay, but again lacked some on flavor. So that was $25 down the drain. Since this was takeout, I was upset enough to call regarding the bad chicken. They didn't care, just gave me the runaround, told me to tell the cook next visit to cook it less time. Um, no thank you. I know there has to be more exciting dishes on the menu considering their reputation, but the experience left a bad taste in my mouth, literally and figuratively.

Brock B.

Yelp
I have been eaten this place over 8 years, the food always good and fresh, people are nice there, the traditional Chinese food is wonderful, and the service is real good, I can feel their sincerity. I strongly recommend this place to people who like Chinese food, just to go and try it.
google avatar

Fred F.

Yelp
Good food, fresh and service. Thank you!!! Will come back soon. Thank I think it's for me to post the review :)

Christopher M.

Yelp
This food is blah. It is all made to order and the service is good but they have taken super authentic dishes and put the Americanized spices on it/lack of spices. If you don't know what real Chinese tastes like, and Szechuan is not a word you understand, this place will rock your world. Get something on the menu you can't read and ask them to show you how to season and eat it. If your shy, just go for a clay pot and you'll do fine.
google avatar

Franklin O.

Yelp
This is my absolutely favorite Asian restaurant. They owner and employees are very nice and accommodating. Perfect portions, well made and prepared. Be prepared for be thankful for diversity! The ambiance is great, thus mid.. overall my #1 favorite Asian restaurant in Oklahoma. Enjoy!!
google avatar

Michael M.

Yelp
Always amazing food and amazing staff. If you like spicy food, you've got to try the spicy boiled fish!
google avatar

Kat M.

Yelp
Food was bland. Perhaps because we ordered more Americanized food but I would still expect flavor. Portions were okay but very little meat in our dishes.
google avatar

T J.

Yelp
Excellent service as always. The food was great. I asked for less 'spice' on my shrimp dish and they obliged. It was delicious. My husband enjoyed his dish as well. Generous portions, enough for lunch and dinner.

Yelp
Having recently moved from CT where there are a few solid Szechuan spots, I knew I had to try Szechuan Bistro out after some research and sound endorsements from locals. For my first foray, I decided to take a few coworkers who had never had Szechuan cuisine. Despite their relative inexperience, I went all out for our orders - picking the more authentic dishes that are recommended for seasoned Szechuan veterans. These dishes include the famous mouth watering chicken, dan dan noodles, twice cooked pork, pork wontons, sliced pig ear, and a smoked half duck! Let's get arguably the only negative out of the way. For Szechuan food, a common flavor element is "numbing." Most of my dining companions were not used to that, but the Dan Dan noodles (which we had first) simply had way too much Sichuan peppercorn - even for a pro. In addition, since this was our first dish, it numbed everyone's palette for an extended duration. Dan Dan noodles aside, everything was as authentic and tasty as expected. The twice cooked pork had a nice char from that high wok heat, the sliced pig ears were of a perfect, chewy texture, and the pork wontons had the optimal meal to wrapper ratio. In the end, the absolute standout dish here was the Smoked Half Duck. Never have I or my dining companions had such crispy duck skin that was more or less completely separated from the meat. As a cherry on top, the smoky flavor had penetrated the duck entirely - make sure you have this dish with rice! I am so glad I found Szechuan Bistro and will be back to try their other signature dishes!

Kirk H.

Yelp
The staff here was super friendly, though communication was sometimes a little difficult. The food was hit and miss. The pork fried rice was very good. Steamed dumplings were undercooked and doughy, while the shrimp we had was overcooked and rubbery.

Valerie H.

Yelp
Food was bland. Shrimp bites were minced shrimp that was fried. Pass. Nothing exciting here.

Yelp
Looking for somewhere new to try, we came here...and we'll be back. On a Thursday it was pretty quiet and we were seated quickly. I ordered the Spicy Boiled Beef and it was awesome and huge! We started off with egg rolls which were also delicious.

Kimberly O.

Yelp
My son loves the orange chicken, fried rice and egg rolls. I haven't found a favorite dish yet, but do love the hot and sour soup. We always get takeout, which is ready to carry out when I get there. The staff is always friendly. There is a lot of casual seating available.

Michael H.

Yelp
Great, authentic food. Priced well with very good service and a comfortable feel. We will return

Theressa T.

Yelp
This is my go to Chinese restaurant for sure. When my college kids come home that's a first run. The food is fresh and they are very kind.

Rick V.

Yelp
Best Chinese in north OKC. Good service and great food. Friendly service and easy parking.

Ginger T.

Yelp
Usually very good this time it was Christmas Eve and they told us it would be an hour for takeout we came to store at the hour and food must have been setting for some time because food was cold by the time we ate it. Not happy considering we spent 90.00 because they're not the cheapest in town.
google avatar

Yelp
I have eaten at Szechuan Bistro many times since it opened, but it has been a couple of years since my last visit. A dip in quality had me stay away, but I am very happy to report that this wasn't the case during my last visit. My wife, daughter, and I shared several apps and entrees and everything was delicious. The beef with black pepper sauce from the Special Chinese menu was very, very good as were their steamed pork dumplings.
