Where to Eat and Drink in Portland’s North Tabor Neighborhood

"This cozy, elevated gastropub is a neighborhood favorite for a mid-week dinner, whether it’s a date or a family dinner. Decked out in wood paneling with golden sunshine during the day and intimate mood lighting at night, regulars sit down to giant burgers and sandwiches or comfort food like shepherd’s pie and fish and chips. In true tavern form, a well-stocked bar slings house cocktails or frosty craft beers on draft. Weekend brunch is also on deck, with staples like eggs Benedict, chicken and waffles, and biscuits and gravy. The outdoor tables along Burnside are the way to go for drinks and bites on warm, summer evenings." - Zoe Baillargeon

"This spot has a definite neighborhood feel to it, but it’s famous across the city for its burger, which is served on a brioche bun with a generous helping of bacon jam (the jam can, and probably should, be ordered with any of the sandwiches on their menu). The casual vibe makes it exceptionally kid-friendly—there are plenty of high chairs to be found at weekend brunch."

Google
what an amazing happy hour spread! i was genuinely impressed by the sheer variety of options available. we dove into the fish & chips, the soup of the day, a kale caesar salad, and mac & cheese, all alongside some cocktails and beers. it's rare for so many dishes to hit the mark, but every single thing we ordered was delightful!

Google
Very cute little hideaway in southeast. Their happy hour food specials are amazing and the cocktails are creative and use some fun local ingredients. It'd be a great place for a date night or to go out with friends, but I usually go in the afternoon with my laptop when I need to get work done but can't focus at home.

Google
I've been coming here for years and it never disappoints. This time we tried the fish and chips besides a couple burgers. The fish and chips were excellent and im usually not a fan. Just a lovely place with amazing food and good service. Always perfect for date night. Never any complaints.

Google
Perfect laid-back ambiance for a community tavern/pub. I regularly bring guests from out of area here. It's a vicarious point of pride. Happy Hour makes my tummy ... well, "happy!"

Google
Tabor burger is a always a win! Fries and salad are great also. Wonderful service and was able to be sat quickly.

Google
My wedge salad was delicious. My son fried chicken sandwich fell apart and was not easy to eat. Placing more than one food stick to hold it together might be useful.

I've been coming here for the last five years and absolutely recommend it. The atmosphere is catered towards small groups of individuals more so than large parties but they do have some seatng to accommodate. Food is high quality, well made, and a major point of pride for the establishment.

Google
We love this place. The food tastes great and the staff is so friendly. The music is fantastic and there are enough TVs to catch a game. Our daughter loves a seat in the booth to watch walkers stroll by, or sit at one of their picnic tables outside. Get their fish and chips!

Yelp
Great ambiance (outdoor seating) incredible food and outstanding service. Also good beer selection

Yelp
What happened ?? We loved coming here for the last 10 years, and while the service and atmosphere are still great, the food has slipped seriously. Onion soup that had no onions and is spicy?? Burger overcooked and the cheese not even melted ? Fish and chips that tasted frozen, soft batter not crisp like it used to be, and what is that dark squiggle of something on the fish ? New cooks? Fire them and get the others back, please

Yelp
Tabor Tavern We frequent Tabor Tavern and the food is great. Tonight we ordered burgers and a cup of Coconut Carrot Curry soup. Sounds kinda sweet yeah? It turned out being very spicy. When we told the waitress it was too spicy and asked for a side of fries instead, she reluctantly took the cup and said, "well it's curry so......". We didn't know what to say. Had the soup been called Spicy Coconut Carrot Curry we wouldn't have ordered it. Just FYI Tabor Tavern staff, not all curry is spicy. Curry is a spice but alone it's not spicy. Disappointed.

Yelp
A goto lunch spot! The place where the meal size is more than adequate and a homemade flavor.

Yelp
If you grew up in the suburbs and your parents took you to a tavern for dinner, it probably looked exactly like Tabor Tavern on the inside. The restaurant gives a nostalgic, cozy vibe and hits the spot when it comes to comfort. The place was packed when we arrived, so we grabbed some seats at the bar and were promptly greeted. Drinks were delicious and extremely well priced. For dinner my husband ordered fish and chips and I ordered the BLT with fries. Overall we thought the food lacked flavor, mainly salt. I would certainly go back and try other things on their menu and this is a great place for families!

Yelp
First of all, the parking is very difficult to find. Secondly, the service is phenomenal. Friendly server but there was a bit of a wait since it was around 5pm Friday. The food came out quickly and I ordered right before happy hour ended so it was just snacking size. I didn't like the steak bites too much. Kinda dry and tough. Kale Caesar was mediocre. Fries could be a bit more crispy and seasoned. I did order a Mac and cheese which could be a bit cheesier or creamier. I would come here for the drinks and vibes not so much on food. Maybe I have to try the entrees and not HH. Maybe a second try.

Yelp
Atmosphere: Good, neighborhood bar with some TV's. Especially lively if you go during a Bills game. Food: Don't believe I got food but want to try the wings. Price: I was drinking cheap beers so cheers for having those. Service: Great service, friendly staff Parking: Street parking

Yelp
I really DO recommend the Tabor tavern! Literally down the street from an airbnb I frequent in PDX. The first time I was there, I passed by multiple times, observing locals enjoying their meals outside and inside, but never stopped in. This past trip, when hungry and looking for something easy, we walked right over and were seated immediately. We got there at 5:40, JUST missing their happy hour, which looks pretty excellent. On the other hand, I ordered the kale caesar and my husband got the burger and we both enjoyed our meals tremendously. Fresh ingredients and skilled execution coming out of the kitchen. The other thing I REALLY like about the Tabor Tavern, something I wish were true where I live on the East Coast is that this is a true neighborhood spot. On the East coast, an establishment may be described as a "neighborhood" spot in the vibe they are trying to grow with their customers. The Tabor Tavern is actually embedded in a neighborhood, with not much else around. The realness of that is appreciated!

Yelp
5 stars for the service alone. The waitress was very attentive and funny. I had their turkey club, and let me tell you that bacon jam on there was the best part. I can see why they sell it separately. Great atmosphere for a date night. Will be back.

Yelp
Tabor Tavern is a hidden gem in Portland food culture. A great neighborhood eatery with some incredible options of appetizers and entree's. They also have a full bar with some tasty options for beer and cocktails. The staff is great. Very attentive, welcoming, and provide amazing service. Some of the best go-to's are burgers on the menu, the fish & chips, and more. Great place for a friendly lunch, spot to watch game, or simply enjoy a good meal. Will definitely be returning.

Yelp
Don't come at shift change.... you will be forgotten. Employees to busy catching up with each other and checking out to give a damn about your needs.

Yelp
If you want a no frills delicious meal in Portland, check out Tabor Tavern. I recommend any one of their burgers and fries, and wash it down with something great from their tap list. The apps are also fun, and there's something for every palette. The bartender and servers are friendly, and I find this to be a good "easy" option in the neighborhood. There's nothing trendy about this place, it's a neighbhorhood classic.

Yelp
Wonderful---except..... We arrived about 5:15 on a v busy Dec Friday night. Only had to wait a few mins to be seated in a booth. We were grateful the server allowed us to order off the Happy Hour menu; it was about 5:28! The food and drinks were great and came to our table pretty quickly. As soon as we finished eating the server brought the check and told us there were people waiting at the door to be seated. I've never been asked to leave a restaurant before so someone else could have our booth. We were there less than 50 mins. I won't be going back. Parking was a nightmare, especially if you are unfamiliar with the area. It was so dark and raining so hard, finding a spot would be easier in the summer when you can see better!

Yelp
I gotta say, this is a hard review to write. We have been coming to Tabor Tavern for years. It's such a great spot, but lately the quality and customer service have diminished. A while back we placed a to-go order and when we arrived to pick it up, they were only accepting cash. No big deal other than they didn't tell us when we placed the order. Ok, fine. The last time we picked up our order, there was a piece of plastic in the burger. Gross, but we reluctantly decided to just deal. Today? Picked up a Tabor Burger only instead of arugula in it as the menu states, it had some spring mix on it and the French fries were stone cold. It was not good and now we're really frustrated. We are starting to feel scammed by this place. Why are they not checking in with customers when their credit card machines are down or when they are out of an ingredient? Why is there plastic in the food? We're bummed, but we can't sit idly by anymore. We hope you all have better luck there, but we're going to take a break from this place.

Yelp
Great food in a nice atmosphere. Good prices for what you're getting. Menu had a good variety.

Yelp
I got a kids meal version of the fish and chips and def was best fish and chips I've had maybe EVER. Was really good and cheap ($9). I had some fish and chips at Jake's seafood grill for like $27 and it SUCKED ASS compared to this place! Good vibes of the place and good service

Yelp
It's way past time for an update! We've now been going to Tabor Tavern for years and the food is always sooo excellent! The hubster and I went recently on a weekend night and had a great time. The atmosphere is quite cozy and the place is generally hopping! I had the shepherd's pie which was amazeballs, topped with just the right amount of mashed potatoes. The filling was full of lamb, veggies, beans and sauce. The complexity of the flavors was terrific. My husband had the reuben, which they did correctly by using Russian dressing not that gross 1000 Island stuff. He said it was wonderful. They also make an awesome turkey club, which has a nice sweet and savory tang, due to their use of bacon jam. Their fish and chips are some of the best in town, and the fried chicken sandwich is also tasty. My spouse is a big fan of the burgers. You really can't miss with your pick at the Tavern!

Yelp
We've driven by this place many times and never went inside. After reading the reviews, we wanted to try it out. It was good. We tried the classic burger, the ribs, a spring salad with chicken and the risotto. All were good. We found the chicken breast that came with the salad to be really tender. Portland is a great place for burgers because there are so many bars that do a good job with them. This was a typical "good burger in a bar" experience. It came with a brioche bun. We notice that the menu has changed from a few years ago and it is now a 1/3 lb of beef instead of 1/2 lb of beef. But it's still a good burger.

Annika P.

Yelp
Came here with family and we enjoyed our meal. Portions and quality of the fries was the best part for me, and my husband enjoyed his Fried Chicken Sandwich. My Black & White burger was just okay. It could've been more flavorful. But it was a nice atmosphere and a good place to catch up with our extended family. And the younger cousins enjoyed their items off the kids' menu (the main reason we chose Tabor Tavern).
google avatar

Mal A.

Yelp
Went to Tabor Tavern for the first time in a while. I was lured in by their online menu, but when there the menu didn't seem as alluring. Prices seemed high for what they were offering. Got the burger, because it had been a while. I was disappointed. Undercooked, but also charred on the outside. Not to mention the sauce was not very tasty. I now remember why I stopped going there. They had great burgers many years ago, but it seems like they changed something in the kitchen and it has not been great since. The fries were okay and the service was good, hence the second star.
google avatar

Diana H.

Yelp
We've been wanting to try this place for a while. And we finally got a nice table outside with our dog. We started with a couple of drinks. Pictures included, and then we went on with fried brussels sprouts with bacon jam and parmesan. My daughter had the Turkey club, which she said was delicious. And I had the fried chicken sandwich, which I have to say was the most tender chicken sandwich. I have ever had in my entire life. I asked the server if it was marinated, and he told me it was marinated in picklejuice, which was just incredible. The batter was absolutely flaky, and the chicken breast melted in my mouth. I'm so glad we finally got to try Tabor Tavern. And we will definitely come back. So many more times that they may be sick of seeing us.

Yelp
Great summer stop for outside dining and drinks outdoor seating for a late summer evening is a must. The place definitely feels like a neighborhood hangout with lots of people walking up and no real parking. The food was great. It was fresh and perfectly seasoned with just enough to be almost to much but not enough to take it with you and lose it in the back of your fridge. The drinks were tasty, and they had a great variety of beers on tap. The service was very pleasant but you could tell that they were busy. All in all we never felt rushed or crowded. The volume was perfect for conversations. It's definitely laidback and comfortable.
google avatar

Robert M.

Yelp
Food and beer was good. Went with friends and our dogs, so we sat on the patio out front. Felt like we were a nuisance to the server more than anything else. Felt very awkward and just put a hamper on everything.

Yelp
My partner and I were running around looking at some houses and realized that while we had an appointment elsewhere later in the evening, there was no way we were going to be up for that if we didn't have dinner. She pulled up a quick search and Tabor Tavern hit on "gastropub" and that pretty much made the decision. That turned out to be a very solid decision indeed. The beer board had enough tempting brews with which we weren't familiar to merit several tastings -- she wound up with the Nitro Wild Ride Vanilla Cream Ale, I wound up with the Von Ebert Volatile Substance. We ordered, and while waiting, surveyed the surroundings. It was a very nice traditional pub, some nice touches. The ceiling fan that was actually spinning two rotary fans was very cool -- and the extra cooling was very welcome! The service was prompt enough for a lazy Sunday evening dinner, and very attentive. At no point did we feel rushed, nor ignored. The perfect balance. Dinner arrived and there was much rejoicing. My partner got the pepper crusted seared ahi with a salad and chips; I got the lamb burger and pub fries. I elected to lose the harissa sauce that the burger came with and substitute the horseradish from the steak frites. That worked swimmingly, once I got enough horseradish on board to have the desired effect. Everything was super tasty. We're likely to keep this on the "repeat as needed" list for when we're in the neighborhood.

Marcia L.

Yelp
The food here is really good! It's simple yet creative and thoughtful. The same is true for their cocktails. The service is friendly and efficient. When it's busy it's pretty loud but it has an otherwise cozy and welcoming ambience.
google avatar

Yelp
This is the perfect place to eat dinner and watch the sunset. The outdoor seating is limited but is nicely tucked in the shade. You'll find the bar to have great cocktails and a well curated beer list. The burgers here are awesome.

Yelp
This is a really sweet neighborhood spot with great food and friendly staff. We love it here and definitely recommend.

Yelp
I visited here during a recent business trip and had a pretty good experience. Although the food took a while to come out. I sat at the bar and the restaurant was about half full. After a while some tables left and then a large group came in, somehow my order seemed to get placed after theirs because they were receiving appetizers for a while before my dish even came out. I ordered a simple steak frittes and saw it sitting in the kitchen on the prep table for 5 mins and looked unfinished. Turns out it was waiting on the fries to be made. By the time it came to me at the bar, the meat was starting to get cold. It seemed like they were running a little short on staff. The brown ale I had was really good though but I was easily finished with it before the food arrived. They utilize a cheap cut of beef, bartender indicated it was a beef shoulder. Who uses beef shoulder for steak frittes? Anyways, the experience was not too bad other than that. It's a nice neighborhood tavern.

Diane R.

Yelp
Thoughtful service in accommodating the needs of our 5 year old grandson. They have a kids menu and give the kids a coloring sheet and some crayons. We got beef and a lamb burgers, and they were so large that we could have happily split one order.
google avatar

Yelp
It's been a minute but this spot remains one of the most reliable mid-priced elevated pub & grubs in the Tabor/Montavilla area. Today, I had the fish & chips and she had crab cakes and a salad. She immediately remarked that the crab cakes were much more crab than cake and very fresh. The salad was big and gorgeous. My haddock was a full fillet, from tail to collar, half a good-sized fish, over 12" long and ranging over the corners of the plate by inches. The coating was super crispy and the fish absolutely fresh and flaky. No vinegar to mask off-notes required. I must say, this was a much larger portion than Horsebrass, better fish, and much less expensive. The fries... well, if you LIKE droopy home fries I guess, but these were just window dressing and unnecessary carbs to me. I've had their burgers in past and rate them in my PDX top 10. Pro Tips: If you can, park in one of the two parallel parking spots to avoid dings from tight side-by-side spots that are really a bad idea when beer is involved . Also, it's RIGHT on a bike parkway, at a nice dedicated crossing with lights so that's an awesome way to work off the calories before/after! Oh, and Portland's best apple fritters are right down Burnside a few blocks East, on the South side of the street, just before 60th at Donut Queen!
google avatar

Casey B.

Yelp
I can't believe I haven't written a review of TT! I love this place, honestly. It's a neighborhood pub/tavern feel with some great drinks and bomb food. Last night we had the delicata squash salad which was perfectly balanced with goat cheese and a light dressing. We also had the butternut squash soup and split a turkey club. The sandwich was so fresh and tasty. The cheese on it was out of this world. The fries were hot and so fresh. Also, in an age where servers don't try because they know they will get a tip, it was so refreshing to have amazing, quick and efficient service. This is a must try place in mid/east Portland.
google avatar

Yelp
Wow. This place is fantastic. Service is great, cocktails are inventive and delicious, and I had the best spinach and warm bacon salad I have ever had. I can't wait to become a regular here.
google avatar

Cheryl N.

Yelp
Came here for happy hour yesterday, had a yummy mango bloom kombucha. Wasn't a drinking night for me but they have great drink specials at HH. I was able to add a gf bun to my happy hour burger with bacon jam and the side of fries were scrumptious. Ammie, my server came around a few times to see if I had everything I needed, which was great. I can't wait to try the Brussels here.

Yelp
Fish and chips are great. One order is large enough for two. Make sure you order an IPA with this for best results... 2

Yelp
Went here for a lunch in between work. Service was so short that we sat for 30 minutes without getting help. Had to find the waitress to actually get help then when we ordered her food, it was subpar.

Yelp
Great food Nice services The mussels, classic burgerand the kids fish and chips are awesome. Will definitely come back.

Holly D.

Yelp
Tasty food and honest drink. Everything was prepared with care: the salad was perfectly dressed, the bacon was done to a turn, the burger was nicely seasoned, the chicken was moist. Service was friendly and paced perfectly. We had intended to go someplace else tonight but I'm glad we ended up here. Will be back.

Yelp
We like coming here when we visit Portland. It's comfortable with good food, beer and service. Our choices were a beet burger, Tabor burger (excellent), mussels and a cup of soup. Excellent food, good beer and good service from Trevor. As always, we will be back.

Yelp
Lamb burger had no sear and was grey. Seemed to me a premade frozen patty. Will not be coming back.
google avatar

Jeana C.

Yelp
The waitress and bartender were nice. The burger was ok, there are burgers out there for 1/2 the price that are just as good or better. The deviled eggs were terrible. I love deviled eggs normally, these were barely edible. They had definitely been in the fridge for days and were very rubbery with a weird chemical, stale taste, hard to explain. Maybe they weren't covered well enough and absorbed the fridge smells? Yuck. I won't go back.

Yelp
Yummy food awesome service good beer and drink selection. Everything was great. Kudos all around.

Yelp
Quaint little restaurant. Food was pretty good, and service was excellent. A very nice place to go to after work and grab a Happy Hour appetizer with friends and family. We arrived in time for Happy Hour and had the Pulled Pork Sliders, Cheeseburger, Queso Dip, and the Kale Caesar Salad. All of these food plates were well prepared, and delicious. Weill definitely be returning to try out the other items on the menu. Thumbs up.

Yelp
Such a great neighborhood place, recommended by our nurse at Providence. We have been twice so far and will continue to visit. Great drinks & burgers, excellent fries, delicious soup, amazing fried chicken and pulled pork sandwiches. Nice atmosphere and friendly, attentive staff. Update- make it 3x.... Great kale Caesar and Mac n Cheese! Swift cider on tap.

Yelp
The food here is delicious! Everyone at our table loved their dish. From the steak frites to the turkey club sandwich, the burgers, chicken sandwich, and kids meals it was all great. Not a single complaint. My mouth is watering just thinking about the fries and their bacon jam.

Yelp
Great food, great drinks, great atmosphere. Came here with a couple of friends. All of us really liked this place. Comfortable setting, clean, and the service is fantastic. I'm going to take my wife here on a date. I know she'll love it, too. Worth the drive from Troutdale to go back.

Yelp
Very good food and cocktails!! Definitely one of my neighborhood favorites. Make sure you check it out.

Yelp
Low key and nice place to enjoy a burger. We were at Tabor Tavern for a work related event so we did not partake in their Beer offerings. I enjoyed the Nicoise Salad. The Tuna was well prepared, the greens were fresh. Service was fast, friendly and efficient!

Yelp
Lovely neighborhood tavern. Be prepared to wait on a weekend but it goes by quickly. Great wide variety menu. Dimly light and cozy log cable vibes inside. Definitely family friendly. All the food we got was delicious and tasted of good quality. Loved the kale Caesar salad. Friendly service as well!
