Taco Primo incorrectly labels items on their menu as “Vegan” but if you ask their staff and chef, those same items contain chicken stock. The Mexican rice, despite being labeled as vegan throughout the menu, has chicken and chicken stock in it. Do NOT trust anything coming out of their restaurant if you’re vegan or vegetarian, or if you have other allergies. Wildly irresponsible, infuriating, and inconsiderate.
Response to owner who replied that their cashier misunderstood and that I’m making a false accusation [screenshot attached since my update will remove it]: I ordered the vegan jackfruit bowl, which is labeled as vegan on the menu. Before I asked any questions, the cashier told me that while the black beans in the bowl were vegan, the Mexican rice was not. I asked her to confirm with the chef, and after doing so she returned and said the chef confirmed the rice contained chicken stock. She repeated this several times, and when I showed her the website labeling the rice as vegan, she was surprised and said, “wow, that shouldn’t say that.”
Even if the rice is vegan, the fact that multiple staff members — the chef included — said that the rice contained chicken stock is a serious concern. For people who are vegan, vegetarian, or have allergies (myself included), miscommunication like this can cause real harm.
I hope the restaurant takes this as an opportunity to review training and communication, because customers rely on accurate labeling and clear guidance when making safe food choices.
