Hand-pressed to order tortillas to cradle carne asada & adobada tacos from a no-frills modern shop.
"Three months ago, quarantine was something that only happened in Contagion, the words “social distancing” meant nothing to us, and we would have never dreamed of reading one of the books used to decorate our room. And while we still haven’t actually read any of them (we’ve definitely thought about it, though) so much in the world has changed - like Tacos 1986 now having three permanent outposts. This former pop-up can be found in Downtown LA, Westwood, and Beverly Grove, and they all serve their signature Tijuana-style Mexican food like asada tacos, adobada quesadillas, and pollo vampiros, ranging from $3.25-$5. Order through their website or find them on most major delivery apps." - kat hong
"Tacos 1986 exploded onto the LA taco scene with a Koreatown stand early last year - now, they’ve got brick-and-mortar locations all across the city. And the Downtown LA location is open for pick-up and delivery until midnight every night of the week. Nearly everything on the menu - our favorites are the asada tacos and the adobada mulitas -comes with guacamole (which is a good thing), but get an extra order on the side." - kat hong, brett keating
"I gorged on tacos from Sonoratown, Tacos 1986, and La Isla Bonita." - Bettina Makalintal
"Movie Pairing:Have A Good Trip: Adventures In Psychedelics (Netflix) “This new Netflix sorta-doc is basically just Party Legends with a bigger budget, as a bunch of celebs (Sarah Silverman, A$AP Rocky, Sting, etc.) narrate animated versions of their greatest psychedelic experiences. Is it good? Not really, though if you enjoy the occasional spontaneous flashback, I can’t recommend it enough. And since a whole lot of the film deals with mushrooms, do yourself a favor and order Tacos 1986’s hongos tacos. Served on a handmade corn tortilla, the mushrooms are perfectly sauteed and seasoned, then doused in a tangy salsa ranchera I’d chug a gallon of. Are they psychedelic? No, but they areavailable for takeout and delivery, the latter of which might come in handy if the thought of leaving your couch terrifies you.” - JM" - brant cox, kat hong, brett keating, james montgomery
"Vendors that have found success at Smorgasburg, like Tacos 1986, Wanderlust Creamery, and Broad Street Oyster Co., have found different reasons to stay at the market for so long." - Jean Trinh
