Best Tacos in Phoenix, Arizona | Eater Phoenix

"Old Town Scottsdale is thick with flashy, expensive restaurants, so a humble taqueria like Tacos Jalisco provides welcome relief from the glitz and glam. It’s been a neighborhood favorite since 1996, thanks in large part to the Reyes family’s simple, homey food, offered at ridiculously low prices. The restaurant is famous for its carne asada, marinated in mesmerizing adobo, but all the classics — al pastor, carnitas, chorizo, tripas, lingua, and cabeza — are here." - McConnell Quinn

Phoenix’s Best Mexican Restaurants | Eater Phoenix

"Scottsdale isn’t exactly known for low‑key Mexican food, especially the kind without a drinks menu or sharply designed dining room. But this no‑frills South Scottsdale taquería has been quietly holding it down for years with Jalisco‑style staples and little interest in catering to tourists. The setup is straightforward: counter service, fluorescent lights, and laminated menus — but the food always delivers. On weekends, regulars pile in for birria de chivo and menudo, both available only then. The rest of the week, the menu shines with tortas ahogadas (a Jalisco sandwich specialty) served crusty, fiery, and properly drenched, alongside a deep roster of shrimp plates: camarones rancheros (fajita‑style with bell pepper and tomato), camarones al ajo, fiery camarones a la diabla, ceviche tostadas, shrimp cocktail (or a shrimp‑and‑octopus version), and breaded camarones empanizados. The house salsas, made fresh daily and sold by the pint, are a highlight on their own. An attached raspado shop pours syrup‑soaked shaved ice, the ideal cooldown after anything here." - McConnell Quinn

I ordered the sope and taco, honestly I’m confused. Last time I ordered the sope they prepared it for me but this time they just put everything on the plate for me to do. Which isn’t a big deal just confused why it’s different this time. imo this place is too expensive for the quality. My coworkers love it so I don’t have a choice sometimes to come here Only place I have come across that tries (sign above hot sauce bar) to charge for more than 1-2 little cups of salsa.

We were in the area (Old Town Scottsdale) and wanted Mexican Food. We decided on El Original Tacos Jalisco. Unfortunately, it wasn't really what we were looking for but ate here regardless. I had the Carne Asada Taco. It came with a lot of meat and the meat was a bit hard. So, not the best I've ever had. I didn't like the red sauce that it was topped with but I did enjoy the salsa verde or geen salsa. I did enjoy the carnitas. My grandson didn't like the taste of the meat so I ended up eating it.

Google
Legit Mexican taqueria. Not some gringo joint... Food is fresh. Made to order very tasty and the staff is wonderfully helpful. I got this on a recommendation from the maintenance guy at the embassy Suites on Scottsdale and he was right! I got this in a recommendation from the maintenance guy at the Embassy Suites on Scottsdale and he was right! It's legit!

Google
The local business is everything they said, and more! Yes the salsa is excellent, but so iseverything else. We had ordered Asada, Gorda, and Burro combos. Usually I have leftovers, but I ate it all. It was the one time I didn't mind having a food-coma! They're busy, there's usually a line out the door, but it's definitely worth all the hassle!

Google
Absolute abhorrent customer service. My husband and I are regulars, however, tonight in our carne asada tacos, I cut my mouth on a sharp, jagged piece of bone, almost an inch long. I called them immediately before they closed around 9:55 PM to tell them what happened; They offered to remake the tacos tomorrow, which makes zero sense, so naturally I asked for a refund. The cashier told us that she had already closed down the drawer as well, so basically nothing could be done. The cashier called her manager, Brenda, to ask what to do and the manager told the cashier to hang up on us. Obviously it was now past 10:00 PM so they were trying to avoid me. Absolutely despicable. Don’t waste your time or your money.

Google
Absolutely banger tripa tacos. I don’t know what constitutes ‘legit’ Mexican food, I mean, look at my name it’s as bland as a cucumber sandwich sans mayonnaise, but the taco platter I got was deadly with a capital D. 11/10 would eat there again if I found myself in the cultural morass that is Scottsdale Arizona.

Google
I got papas lokas and my husband got a carne asada taco and a bean and cheese burrito. The staff members were wonderful, fast, and helpful! The food was so yummy and authentic. I would absolutely go back!

Google
I’m a gringo that’s been eating Mexican food for 60 years. Discovered this place when I use to work in Scottsdale, AZ. Located in a Hispanic area on 68th & Thomas, this place can be hit and miss depending on the item(s) ordered. Over time, I’ve learned what to order and what not to order. Today… I wanted a bowl of Muendo but it is only served on Sat & Sun… that’s one of my pet peeves! So… I thought I’d try the Huevos Rancheros de Todo and 2 Tacos de Cabeza. The Huevos Rancheros had no corn tortilla under the fried eggs over easy… and had no specially made sauce. Fried eggs had a lot of lace and the sauce looked liked pico de gallo that was fried on the grill before before placing it on the eggs. Rice was the worst I’ve had… refried beans were good. Sliced lettuce & diced tomatoes were a nice touch. Flour or corn tortillas are served on the side. The Tacos de Cabeza didn’t look like much but turned out to be a huge surprise! They contained the most meat I’ve ever had in this type of taco… and it was delicious! In summation, I’ll go again but just won’t order the Huevos Rancheros…

Yelp
Tacos - asada was okay, less charred flavor and more of the ground beef flavor which I don't like. Pastor was marinated, but not in the usual red achiote flavor. Pollo was the braised style. Salsas - the green and red chip salsas were spicier than the red hot. Hard to appreciate any spice in the red hot, though nice subtle toastiness. Soup! Don't usually like soup but the shrimp soup was a nice surprise - with the lime, cilantro, and onions, it made for an ongoing appetizing experience. Nicely cooked & tasty celery, bell peppers, and potatoes- like a Mexican minestrone. Not too fishy, and nice flavor & texture of shrimp. Would have the soup again.

Yelp
Overall solid for $3 a pop. The pastor was better than the asada. Asada was just ok. Service was just fine for a fast food joint. Nothing special here but it's not bad at all either. I'd come back if cruising around the area. Can't go out of my way though for it. I give it a 3.5 outta 5 star rating.

Yelp
Hungry for lunch and don't want to wait? You better get there early. I arrived at 11:25am and the line was out the door! El Original Tacos Jalisco is located in a tiny strip mall. Parking is limited and cars are plentiful, so you may need to park on a side street during peak hours. The service was as fast as could be expected, considering the size of the crowd. After about 10 minutes waiting to place the order, the food arrived about another ten minutes later. Not bad, considering they also seemed to have numerous take out orders to fill. The dining room was tight. Every seat in the house was occupied, so consider yourself lucky to nab one. They have MCC on the tellie if you're into that sort of thing. (Volume is rather loud.) I ordered the #10, a Quesadilla and Taco Combo (drink not included). The Carne Asada taco was spicy for my taste, but may be welcomed if you like to kick it up a notch. The refried beans, shredded iceberg lettuce, diced tomatoes and chips were all fine. The standout was definitely the guacamole. It was prepared simply. I'm not sure what was in it, but the flavor was outstanding! I also enjoyed the carb- loaded goodness of the fluffy rice. Also, the quesadilla was "muy bien"! It could have been heated another minute or two to help melt the ample cheese portion, but I would definitely recommend it. A bit of minced onion gave it just the right texture. I hope to revisit EOTJ soon. The price is right, plus the guac, rice and quesadilla were unforgettable!

Yelp
Located in a strip mall, the restaurant is quite large. You can tell it's authentic and family owned. They had plenty of veggie options and the service was quick. They also offer additional salsa and keep the prices quite low. The vegetarian food was okay. Beans were not flavored with spices and seemed more like a salad. The Gordita and taco tortillas were made fresh. I thought the restaurant lacked taste but is probably better for those who eat meat. I would try once for authentic Mexican food but will likely not return.

Yelp
I was skeptical about finding a good taco spot in Scottsdale but was pleasantly surprised by this spot! This is my boyfriend and I favorite taco spot in Arizona. You can taste the authenticity in every bite. Service was great and they were helpful when making a decision. We ended up ordering the Fajitas de pollo combination plate and it was very filling! Anytime we are in the Scottsdale area this is a MUST STOP! I could go on and on about how incredible this place is.

Yelp
Chorizo and eggs is pretty much always good and the version of that here is no exception. Nary a hangover may stand in its path. They advertise the torta ahogada, which is something I usually like but it seemed like a lot prior to getting on a flight. The ahogadas I've had in the phoenix area have all been notably spicy and these people didn't strike me as slouches. I'll get it when I'm next in town for spring training.

Yelp
Very clean place and nice staff. There is a small salsa bar in the front that we totally missed until we left. They had several plate combinations and a la carte all listed above the order area. We decided on a #6 combination of 3 street tacos, green salad, rice, refried beans, chips and homemade guacamole. We got 2 beef and one chicken taco. The food was quickly prepared. Beware there is a bit of red hot sauce on each taco that will wake up your taste buds with its spicy taste. Otherwise the meal was good. It was plenty for me. There was a bit of gristle in the beef. Shared and street parking.
google avatar

Jessica B.

Yelp
We got 2: #6 Combos (street tacos) * carnitas, steak, and beef cheek. The staff were friendly and helpful with the menu. The service was quick and food was delicious!
google avatar

Ashley J.

Yelp
This is my ultimate hidden gem for Mexican food in Scottsdale!! Absolutely delicious, flavorful, spicy, all the good things! I love the combo plates! Super affordable, they got a salsa bar with the jalapeños and carrots. Really the best authentic Mexican food in Scottsdale and I don't say that lightly. Also they have a bomb raspados place next door for dessert! (Only thing is the parking lot is small and packed so be prepared to search for a parking spot or park on the neighborhood streets behind the place)
google avatar

Yelp
Let's keep this one simple: Best tacos in Arizona (tied with several places). Get tacos de asada, some home made salsa, and stuff your face. 3 tacos is enough but you can handle 4-5 if you try. Service is always fast. I try to practice my Spanish and have gotten some confusion as a result :) but all's well that ends well. And eating Jalisco tacos is a great ending indeed! The place is a small Mexican taco shop in a strip mall by circle k. If "authentic" is what you're after, eat here. If you don't love these tacos, we have absolutely different tastes in food and you should not trust any of my reviews henceforth. I could eat here every single day. I've also had their breakfast and it was top notch. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Kaitlyn S.

Yelp
Great authentic spot! Best food and great service every time. There's also a raspados spot right next door! Love the carne asada and horchata.

Melissa L.

Yelp
It's funny, seeing all the posts raving about their prices. Back in my Scottsdale clubbing days, these were the best Carne Asada hangover burritos you could ever buy for the low price of $5.65 each. Neighborhood still sketchy as ever, but the place is clean and the sauces are spicy. Easily the best tacos in Scottsdale if not the valley..
google avatar

Sydney G.

Yelp
Our bartender at Coach House the night before recommended this spot as being a delicious, affordable option for breakfast the day before I left Scottsdale and it was a great recommendation! Opted for the huevos rancheros, which came on a huge platter with rice, refried beans, salad, salsa, and some tortilla chips. It was huge and less than $10 for breakfast. I also got a hibiscus aqua Fresca and it was really tasty... Not too sweet, which is just how I like it. The service was really fast, we got our food within five minutes of ordering, but everything tasted freshly made. Only negative thing is that they serve everything on Styrofoam which isn't super environmentally friendly.
google avatar

Leticia R.

Yelp
The food was really good. I had the Carne asada burrito. Very flavorful meat and It could probably be shared with a small child. Too big for me. I would like some limes, carrots in the salad bar. The location is small, crowded. Not very much parking as a Circle K shares the lot.
google avatar

Julie S.

Yelp
Not really sure what the hype is here. Service was great but food was not great at all. Meat is dry on tacos and flavor is lacking. There are better joints around.

Thad R.

Yelp
Daughter brought us here and wow worth to stop by. Fantastic lunch of carne asada with salsa
google avatar

Robb Z.

Yelp
Legitimately the best rojo and verde salsa you will EVER have. Unbelievably great food. Best tacos in the valley... maybe the universe. Thank you, Tacos Jalisco. I love you.
google avatar

Aquiles P.

Yelp
I fear they may have a new cook. The spectacular carnitas burrito I typically ordered and ate feverishly has changed, and not for the better. It was smaller in size and it had less carnitas in it. The flavor was pretty average and not worth my drive to get one. I'm disappointed and will now focus going to Beach House instead for their surf & turf burrito, which remains spectacular!!

Yael A.

Yelp
As soon as we walked in, and we were greeted by the wonderful cashier, the food was top-tier, and the Horchata was sweet and savory! The quesadilla was also the right amount of cheese and the right amount of meat! The price was also good for the amount of food we receive
google avatar

Marley R.

Yelp
Let's first start off with the carne asada. Thinking about it just now is making my mouth water. Tacos, burritos, nachos. It's all amazing. Kisses to all the chefs!
google avatar

Ashu D.

Yelp
Authentic Mexican food. Ordered carne asada tacos and pollo plate. Plate came with rice, means, salad, salsa, fajita chicken ( shredded), tasted awesome.
google avatar

Michael V.

Yelp
We came all the way from the DC area. Some of the best tacos I've ever had in my life. Whatever they put in that corn tortilla... $$$ Gonna marry the cook. Laughed at the awesome prices. Recommend to get tres leches cake next door.

Gary A.

Yelp
We ate here twice on our trip to Phoenix. The food was excellent. It is a hole-in-the wall spot but the food is the star. It is cafeteria style so you order and get the food at the counter. The lady who took the order was friendly.
google avatar

Nancy P.

Yelp
Deliciousness!! Go for a hike on Camelback Mountain then come here and get the tacos. The perfect date.

Diana C.

Yelp
We are from Alaska and found this gem on yelp! Unforgettable, fast, friendly, delicious!! I had the steak nachos 10/10, my daughter and son cleaned their plates, and my husband said he would fly back just for this delicious authentic Mexican food.
google avatar

Ashley H.

Yelp
I recently ordered from here and must say it was delicious!!! They made my soup to perfection and didn't skip on anything. The service was quick and I'd highly recommend them for authentic Mexican food.
google avatar

Kristal B.

Yelp
This taqueria seemed promising but was sadly disappointing. The tacos were ok, but burritos were terrible. Staff was friendly and the location was decently clean and service was pretty fast. Parking was terrible.
google avatar

Rachelle W.

Yelp
I was disappointed that they only do Birria on Saturday and Sunday. But then; I had some of the best carne asada tacos I've ever had in my life. This place is absolutely amazing with unbeatable prices. I'm from Michigan and Arizona did NOT disappoint. 10/10
google avatar

Robert H.

Yelp
My nephew has been raving about this place every time they visit so I decided to finally try it. It was very crowded and that is usually a good sign. It is in a kind of run down strip mall but do not let that scare you away. I ordered a couple of burritos to sample their food. Since they screwed up my order and gave me the wrong kind of burrito from what I ordered, I have to review based on that. The mistake was not my favorite but I had always wanted to try lengua anyways. I think it was good but since it was not exactly convenient to get to and these kinds of taquerias are everywhere, I am not sure I would go back unless I was in the area.
google avatar

Rayen O.

Yelp
I called to confirm the vegetarian burrito is vegetarian and it turns out that the beans are made with lard (not vegetarian) and the rice is made with chicken broth (also not vegetarian). Beware and don't be fooled by the word vegetarian. It isn't. I asked if they'd be so kind to make me a taco with avocado to make it vegetarian and they said they could not do that. Not vegetarian or vegan friendly!
google avatar

Jaquay R.

Yelp
I love this family Mexican restaurant. Very authentic. My favorite is the Pollo tacos. There is a savory flavor and a little kick of spice. I did also have the California burrito that I once liked, but the steak tasted bland. I'll stick with the chicken and try the carnitas next visit.

Francisco G.

Yelp
Was greeted immediately by worker at the desk, was super friendly and answered all our questions as this was our first time coming in. The food was absolutely delicious and the pricing was fair! Will definitely come back!
google avatar

Johnny R.

Yelp
Hands down one of the best Mexican foods around. It's always so quick, and efficient! I love coming here for lunch since I work down at the mall. Very convenient!
google avatar

Darya S.

Yelp
One of the things that I always felt was painfully lacking in the NYC food scene was menudo, and oh my goodness, have I found it here, and wow this authentic AF place makes it the best. I was craving it all week until I got the chance to order it on the weekend, when it's only available here. It's filled with meat and spices, and comes with lime, onions, cilantro, red pepper, and hot sauce, not to mention tortilla. I got flour, because it has more flavor. Can't tell you how happy I was chugging this bowl of menudo down. The portion is the size of my thigh, for not even $10. It's a no-frills place for legit Mexican. Definitely bookmark and go.
google avatar

Teresa M.

Yelp
One of my very favorite quick Mexican takeout. Authentic. Spicy. Delicious. Inexpensive. Everything we have tried has been delicious. Very casual and quality. Love the salsa bar!
google avatar

Kat V.

Yelp
They are always packed! I think because their food is so delicious. We usually get tacos. Cane Asada is tasty. Chicken is tasty. Al pastor is tasty. Both of salsa (red and green) are equally spicy. Pickled jalapeño and veggies are good. Parking is a bit hard but we always get lucky to find the spot.

Brian S.

Yelp
Ordered a carne asada torta, a bean and cheese burrito, and a horchata. Torta - 5/10 Burrito - 4/10 Horchata - 9/10 Girl at the counter was nice, but I don't think I would return here.
google avatar

Gerry L.

Yelp
Unimpressed, but the food wasn't terrible. I just don't care for the way they cook my breakfast burrito.. eggs were over cooked and No refried beans. Also ordered a bean and cheese burrito and they serve whole pinto beans that were not cooked enough for me..we ate there and a lot of flies inside the business, so that really turned me off.
google avatar

Rich V.

Yelp
Love this spot, tacos are always flavorful and the horchata is refreshing! I've been coming here for over a year and I have yet to be disappointed with the tacos. Very casual spot, no frills.
google avatar

matt l.

Yelp
Great local spot that's really authentic. Tried the asada burrito and the pastor quesadilla. Both were fresh and good size. Went twice this week
google avatar

Renata L.

Yelp
You might feel iffy to go inside by the looks of the little strip of shops, but please do not! Restaurant is super clean and lively with locals and tourists alike. We ordered take out and service was prompt and friendly. Prices are super fair too. The ceviche was fresh and well seasoned and cut to perfection. I loved the avocado sauce that came with the quesadilla and all the different salsas ( be warned that they are a little spicy)! Connected to it next door there is their dessert/ice cream shop. We go the flan and it was creamy and caramelly. It is a family owned shop too! What's not to like?
google avatar

Justin R.

Yelp
I will say I did not try the menudo or birria, but what I did try were the tacos. And I was disappointed. I come from LA where you find some of the best tacos so maybe my hopes were too high. But, the tacos were not good and you can find way better stuff in Arizona. Probably not in Scottsdale but there are way better spots in Phoenix. The tacos. They tasted like the asada was made early in the morning and they have either been sitting in a warm pan or were just straight up microwaved. The meat was dry but also mushy. It was weird and I left disappointed. If you want made to order tacos this is not your place. The salsa was good, but not great and that's about it.
google avatar

makayla m.

Yelp
My favorite taco spot in Arizona! Been coming here for years since I was little it is still just as good as I remember.
google avatar

Mia R.

Yelp
I love the carnitas here, and the sauces especially the red one. Small dining room so it does get busy and feels crowded. But they are quick to deliver your food.
google avatar

C.K. E.

Yelp
Don't let the hole in the wall appearance throw you off, this place is a gem. The food was fresh, delicious, and quick. It's a no frills location, but I'm one that prefers substance over style. You won't be disappointed if you love northern Mexican food. The gorditas are phenomenal.
google avatar

Bosh Z.

Yelp
Solid burritos. Amazing sauce. That's about all I need to know. Yelp wants me to blah blah and make my review which should be good enough longer.
google avatar

Erica L.

Yelp
Do NOT come to this place! They will over charge you and will not refund!!!!! I ordered the 9 tacos special, which has no price listed on the wall, shown in photos. On the website, shown in screenshot, they have the price listed as $14.82. She charged me &19.44. $5 EXTRA!!! When I brought it up the lady called a young manager over who was rude and said their price just went up. I said, it's not right to not price match for your customers you do not have your new price listed anywhere. She said sorry and walked away. She cares so little about her customers she can't refund the $5 they owe when I already paid them $30 in food!? They also charge you for the tiny cups of salsa. What a joke. Rude unprofessional and scams you
google avatar

James M.

Yelp
Friendly staff. Plenty of seats or take out. Food portions were large and all food was authentic. I had a #1 which was 1 taco, 1 Burrito (choice of meat), refried beans and rice. Also served with Chips. There is a serve yourself salsa bar with 3 types. Entire meal with a bottled water was only $12 and I could not finish it. The Burrito was enormous ! This is clearly a local favorite for lunch. Located in a small plaza. There

Yelp
My son is a Carne Asada taco fiend, I like the Pastor a lot also. I normally order two tacos pastor or asada and a ceviche tostada and thats a meal for sure... The salsas help set it apart...if you like good, authentic Mexican food it is not to be missed. It's very much a local "taco dive" but it is kept squeaky clean and the food is top notch. It is def on our regular local taco tour...
