Tainos, a Cloud Kitchen Restaurant Serves the Best Mofongos in Los Angeles - Eater LA

"Odessa Rodriguez opened Tainos, a Puerto Rican restaurant, in a Canoga Park cloud kitchen with the help of her husband Nick Varvatsoulis and chef Erwin Torres. The restaurant offers a variety of Puerto Rican dishes, including mofongos, empanadillas, tostones, arroz con gandules, perníl, arroz blanco con habichuelas, churrasco, and daily specials like asopao de pollo and carne guisada. The restaurant operates from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., Monday to Thursday, and from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday." - Bill Esparza

The food was exceptional! I had the Mofongo con Camarones, it was delicious packed with flavor. The Tostones were thick and tasty, the sauce was amazing too. It took me back to my little island of PR. The service was absolutely amazing and very friendly. Super down to earth family. 110% would order again and again.

I felt at home here right away. Coming from Queens, Nueva York it's hard to find Puerto Rican food. But Tainos LA came to save the day. The Mofongo was garlicky just the way that I like it. The chicharron that came with it was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. My bff had the Mofongo with shrimp that was well seasoned. We got the alcapurria which was very tasty. 3 empanadas, one of chicken, beef and pizza. Yo, all three were perfect. The owner and the family are really nice and are working hard in the kitchen getting out the orders. I hope they are able to expand closer to Bellflower in the future.

Google
I had an amazing experience here while ordering and trying out my first Puerto Rican food. I called exactly at 3pm to order the Monfongo Camarones with Criollo Sauce but I didn't just stick to that one order. I took a look at their menu online and saw that they had fries here so I of course ordered some fries as well. I asked my wife if she wanted anything and she saw that they had Flan De Queso so she wanted that along with the Empanadilla de Pollo. I also asked if this was cash only but she said she accepts credit cards as well. The lady said it would take 20 minutes for the food to be ready but I told her, I live about 30 minutes away so she said she'll start cooking it in 10 minutes so it would be fresh when I pick it up. Finding the place was easier because all you had to do was look for the Puerto Rican flag at the gate. Finding parking was easy as well since I was the only customer there so I parked and then called that I arrived. The lady brought out my food and said she added extra sauce for my tries along with extra love. She was very nice and friendly to talk to, she had small chat with my wife since she heard her voice over the phone and figure she was Mexican. My wife loved her Flan and really loved the Empanadilla de Pollo. The fries were decent and I think they want you to eat it with the special sauce because there was no ketchup. The sauce was decent, almost reminded me of a spicier mustard or thousand island. The Mofongo Camarones was a very different dish for me because I never had something like that. You get a decent amount of rice and pork rinds. It also had 2 pieces of shrimp on top. My first experience trying Puerto Rican food and trying a Ghost Kitchen was a success.

Google
Food was absolutely delicious, fresh and flavourful. It's little tricky to locate the pick up spot, because this building is shared by multiple food vendors. If you get lost in the maze, Tainos LA is door no.20. There is no dining option, it's more like a pick up place. Food was ready to pickup in 25 mins. I will definitely recommend this place and will visit again.

Google
I had a great time at Tainos LA. I had the Mofongo with garlic, topped with Shrimp and brown rice. Look at the pictures. This was my first-time eating Puerto Rican food. It was delicious. The combination of the Platens, Chicharron and Shrimp were very tasty. The sauce with peppers complimented the shrimp. It was really good! Edwin brought the recipes and Nick and his wife have created a Ghost kitchen that offers quick pick up, catering and food delivery. When I was there. Nick was getting many orders out. This place is busy. I can see why. If you have never had a Mofongo, I highly recommend it.

🇵🇷 PUERTO RICO (via Eat the World Los Angeles) - This food will take you straight back to wherever you enjoyed your first Puerto Rican home-cooked meals.

Google
I bought a thanksgiving plate , I was really missing my cultures food and taínos did not disappoint. Everything was delicious tastes just like puertorican food in the Bronx. One bite and it was like I was transported back to the Bronx with friends and family. It is a ghost kitchen but they are expanding. Highly recommend going to try to get a Christmas plate, pick up was easy and location has parking.

Google
Delicious, authentic Puerto Rican food!! No dine in services however, the owners are very welcoming. Our dining experience was memorable indeed.
google avatar

Yelp
One thing to note is the food here is ordered for take out and catering. Which is a pity because it's make for a great sit down experience. So we can only rate and review the food here based on that type of experience. We ordered Christmas food - pernil (pork), rice with pigeon peas, and a macaroni salad. Everything tasted great. If you like strongly seasoned meat you'll really enjoy their pork - bearing in mind taste really varies when it comes to how much seasoning we each prefer. The portions could be a little bigger - but that may be the glutton in me. Hopefully this will someday become a sit down restaurant.

Yelp
Aye dios mío que rico! First time ordering from here and will order again for sure! Very authentic and true to the flavors from the island. I went pretty simple with my first order by getting a plain mofongo and then got the appetizer combo. Everything was delicious and still hot when I got home. I was craving some PR food and was feeling too lazy to make my own mofongo, so glad I gave this place a try! Totally satisfied my craving!!
google avatar

Crystal K.

Yelp
Everything is so delicious!! Piping hot, great portion sizes. Call and order ahead and call to pick up. Take out only. I love the crispy bits in the mofongo. The other rice plates were amazing. I love how it's made to order

Yelp
I've been here twice now and it just keeps getting better and better. For those that don't know, this is a ghost kitchen so it's all to go only. I recommend calling about 30-40 minutes before you are ready to pick up as everything is made fresh and hot. On my most recent trip I had the Arroz con Pollo and ordered some chicken empanadas. I will add they are some of the best empanadas I've ever had. On my first visit I met Nick and on my second visit I met his wife Odessa. They are both wonderful people. They do catering as well, just give them at least 48 hours notice. Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
Originally found out about this place because of the Yelp Event last week! Here I am, a few days later to try their Churrasco and Chimichurri! Originally tried their Mofongo Al Ajillo and Carne Guisa which were both great. I definitely liked the Carne Guisa more. They have a really good spicy vinegar sauce but unfortunately it was way too spicy for me and I couldn't enjoy it as much as I wanted. Hoping to try their other spicy sauces in the future. This place is a Ghost Kitchen so you have to call/place your order online and once you arrive, you call again for them to bring it out to you since they keep their doors locked. Honestly, it's convenient! Calling ahead to have your order ready by the time you drive over there. Odessa is the only worker I've met here and she is super sweet and knowledgeable about the culture, food, and history. They have a bunch of interesting food and it was my first time having Puerto Rican food which was a nice change! Finally got to try the Churrasco and Chimichurri Andy only complaint is that the steak is over cooked. I wish it was more Medium Rare. It was super chewy and didn't slice as cleanly but it still had some flavor to it. The chimichurri was delicious and definitely want to ask for extra since it's not enough for the entire plate! Definitely would love to try their other menu items soon! IG: @ammysalamii

Yelp
Absolutely a must have!!! I order take out every time and it's always fresh and still good when I get home. I normally get the arroz con pollo y tostones. The mofongo is hands down the best I've ever had. I get it more often than I'd like to admit lol. By far the best Puerto Rican food in the valley!

Yelp
The good was amazing very tasty! Authentic Puerto Rican food at its finest! I will be back for more! Amazing. Very nice Gentleman who took care of us thank you so much for everything.

Yelp
If you're craving authentic Puerto Rican cuisine without the hassle of cooking, Taínos L.A. is the answer to your prayers! I recently ordered a spread for my uncle's 80th birthday party, and let me tell you, it was a hit. The Mofongo with shrimp was a mouthful of joy, bursting with flavor and perfectly cooked shrimp. The Arroz con gandules was savory and comforting, just like homemade. The Pernil had the ideal amount of seasoning, each bite tender and delicious. And the Tostones, accompanied by a tasty garlic mojo sauce, were just the right size to satisfy. As a New York Rican from a family of great cooks, I can attest that this food is the real deal. Taínos L.A. has captured the essence of Puerto Rican cuisine with finesse. One thing to note is that Taínos L.A. is not a sit-down restaurant; they offer pickup or delivery only. But trust me, it's worth it. If you're in the mood for some seriously good Puerto Rican food, do yourself a favor and try the Mofongo with shrimp from Taínos L.A. You won't be disappointed! We so excited to eat it, that we didn't take any photos, lol

Yelp
Wow!!! Delicious food so amazing I am totally recommending it to my family and my coworkers yummy!!! Que rica comida lo recomiendo wow !!

Yelp
It is what it is! This is a ghost kitchen. Commercial kitchen, meaning pick up or delivery only! The atmosphere here is strictly production driven. IYou can only eat here sitting in your car! There's a sign out front in the driveway. Don't miss it as all of the biotin the area look the same! Now to the food. Thanks to Taino LA. Puerto Rican cuisine has become one of my favorites! Recently I tried their shrimp mufongo . . Perfectly balanced flavors and s on point Food temperature was excellent. The staff were friendly and considerate looking to make sure that they served what you wanted. I'll definitely be back to this spot!

Yelp
Just to give you a heads up... if you want real, authentic, great tasting Puerto Rican food... then look no further. We ordered the the camarón mofongo al ajito and the Arroz con gandules y pernil. My god this was amazing! I literally almost shed a tear as the food took me back to my grandmothers kitchen as a little boy. The aroma: heavenly The taste: oragasmic The pernil: juicier than a mango The mofongo: To die for The flavor: identical to my grandmother. 10/10 I highly recommend their kitchen if you're missing Puerto Rico like I am.

Yelp
Visited again today! Amazing as always!! Since some people seem to not be able to find where their kitchen is at. Here is a photo. It's not super hard to find. Keep in mind, this is not a sit down restaurant. This is a kitchen to pick up amazing Puerto Rican food. With awesome people that have the best energy when it comes to serving their food. I hope this helps anyone who's looking to enjoy!!

Yelp
Odessa's cooking was simply amazing. This is the only "true to our culture" Puerto Rican establishment in So Cal. The quality is off the charts and just like my grandfather used to make. Pork is seasoned and cooked to perfection and each ingredient is on point. No short cuts taken here. Do yourself a favor and pay them a visit. I only hope when they eventually scale that quality doesn't take a step back. I'll be back very soon. Weppaaaaa!

Yelp
We heard a Puerto Rican restaurant opened up near us and was sooo excited to try it. There are NO other Puerto Rican restaurants nearby - despite frequent googling. So, we both had today off and decided today was the day to try it. We looked up the address and drove our happy selves down. My husband, myself and one of our kids. As it turned out- it is NOT a traditional restaurant but pick up/ take out only. However, our err led us to meet the proprietor and the chef!! Odessa is such a pleasure and you can visibly see her passion for her heritage and cuisine. Her uncle, the chef was also very nice. Even before leaving I was in love with this place and I hadn't even eaten yet!! So. Now I'm home. And full. Oh my goodness!!! This food is absolutely amazing. Full of flavor and I could not find a fault in it ( and I'm naturally a negative Nancy lol). So long winded. But call. Order. Eat. And repeat!!

Yelp
I saw a YouTube video on Tainos and the food looked amazing! I had to try it and I wasn't disappointed. For my first foray into Puerto Rican food, I got an empanadilla, alcapurria, pernil with arroz con gandules and mofongo with fried chicken. OMG! Driving home, smelling the food was driving me crazy!!! I pulled over and dove into the chicken empanadilla. That hit the spot!!! It was crispy and delicious. And the lovely lady gave me a bottle of their chili sauce. I love spicy so I tried some. OMG!!! ANOTHER LEVEL! I LOVE THIS CHILI SAUCE!!! So many flavors! It also went well with the alcapurria. But I think the mayo ketchup was a better match. When I finally tried the pernil and arroz con gandules, it was perfection! All the flavors were exquisite. And the pernil was so tender. Just thinking about it is making me hungry for more. And of course, I had to put some of that chili sauce on there. Finally, the mofongo was another star. The fried chicken was packed with flavor. I actually was enjoying both the entrees without the chili sauce. It really doesn't need anything. But with the chili sauce was just another level! I can't wait to try more. The only thing I was disappointed in was they were out of coquito. I really wanted to try that as I'm a huge rum and coconut fan! Maybe next time. PS. I'm almost out of the chili sauce. Must ask for more next time! :)

Yelp
Let's see, True Puerto Rican food in Los Angeles. No way. Always have to get my fix by going to New York or the Island. This is the only place I can say is "TRUE" Puerto Rican food. Real Mofongo, carne and pollo Guisa like my mother and grandmother made. Alcapurria, and Empanadillas were good. Can't wait to try the Papas Rellenos, Sorullitos De Maiz , and the true test, Arroz Con Gandules. So you know I'll be back. If you're picking up, the place can be hard to find. It's in an industrial area, but you can see the beautiful Puerto Rican bandera welcoming you. They are the first door on the right. You need to knock for service. The door was not marked and the only complaint I had. "WILL" be going back. After 40 years in LA, it has finally arrived. Mi Gente.
google avatar

Manny A.

Yelp
Okay, being a Puerto Rican from NYC. I have to say this was a treat to find comida de mi gente in my own back yard. From the first taste my brain said WEPA. Happy we found this place and will be trying more dishes very soon. We had the Pernil con Arroz y Gandules and Carne Guizado con Arroz Blanco. Buen Provecho.

Yelp
AMAZING!! It made me feel like I was coming to grab a plate at my titi's house. I always say if the arroz con gandules (a staple in PR cuisine) doesn't pass the taste test, forget about the rest. Well, I'm happy to say everything I ordered was delicious. The arroz con gandules and pernil were delicious, even my 4 year old loved it. They were also able to accommodate my wife, who's unfortunately allergic to pork, by making a mofongo and churrasco without pork. It was so good, she refused to share. I'm proud to say that Cali FINALLY has a place that you can get true authentic PR food. The next best thing is getting a chance to speak to one of the owners. Thank you Odessa for being so sweet and making a fellow Boricua feel at home. My family and I will be there when you guys open your brick and mortar.

Yelp
I had my honey moon in Puerto Rico, and ever since then- I've been looking for an authentic Puerto Rican restaurant to give me that taste of the amazing island! And although LA has a huge variety of different cuisines, Puerto Rican food is kind of hard to find! That is why I am so happy to say that I'm glad I found Tainos!! Now first thing's first- this is a ghost kitchen! This is NOT a sit down restaurant! Food is available for pick up or delivery through their online channels! Like in typical Puerto Rican fashion, Odessa, the owner, is wonderful! Extremely nice and welcoming. My craving for the Caribbean was satisfied! Thank you Tainos! I'll be back!

Absolutely delicious, savory, and flavorful Puerto Rican food I've ever had. Taste just like homemade! Definitely a must try!!!!

Yelp
Just called this place for a last minute order for 12 people. Super accommodating, ridiculously good taste but even better service. 5 stars for everything except they don't provide ambulance service now that I'm so full I can't move! The hot sauce is fire!
google avatar

Yelp
OMG! OMG!! The ALCAPURRIAS!! Enough said. I'm not a big fan of Mofongo, it's usually too dry for me, and because I just love sweet plantains so much more. However, Taino's beef Mofongo with Chimichurri is THE BOMB, I am now a FAN. My son loves Amarillos, fried sweet plantains, so I get them everywhere I can, even though I often make them myself. He usually says, "these people don't know how to make plantains." As soon as he had Taino's Amarillos he said, "they know how to make them, if they know how to make them they are good cold of hot." He even liked the Alcapurrias, which he did not like from other restaurants. Their arroz con gandules and pernil was as expected--it won't disappoint if you know Puerto Rican food. Food portions are great, as is the value. My only disappointment was they did not have pasteles and sancocho, bc out of season. But will call next week to drive another 5-hours roundtrip to buy pasteles if they make them. It's better than ordering them from New York, which I do--that's how much I love pasteles!! The service: the warmth of true Boricuas, makes a difference. Thank you Tainos LA for making my comfort food. This is not an eat in restaurant, order on the phone, wait in the car and go in when it's ready. Ring the bell, someone will come out. Easy. #homecookedfood

Yelp
So disappointed at the setup of this place. No address of where their location is, we just took a guess because we saw the address across the street. When we went into their weird building, which looked creepy, like a freezer type facility that you see in CSI or NCIS shows. There were just 2 guys sitting on a chair and we asked them if they were waiting for Tainos LA and they said, "yes" if it wasn't for them, we wouldn't have known at all because there's no advertisement or a sign and no one was even there to take our orders or speak to us. We were so disappointed that we left, after we made that drive to finally have some PR food.

Suzy A.

Yelp
The food was absolutely delicious! Mofongo con camarones was definitely my favorite! Everything was seasoned to perfection.

Yelp
Ok so this is my third time in two weeks getting food from here and the reason is it's absolutely the best Puerto Rican food I have had in years. Everything was cooked fresh the flavors were amazing. I love trying new places and especially a family small business and this restaurant is my best find in months. Remember food cooked with love takes a bit more time but the result is so worth it. Thank You guys for this food we will be ordering for our next party next month!

Karla C.

Yelp
Amazing Puerto Rican eats here in LA. Finally, coming from the east coast , this is what my heart needed ! It was my first first time ordering and definitely not my last . The empanadillas were just like the ones I eat in Puerto Rico . I can't forget about the alcapurrias that we're so big, I felt like I definitely got my money's worth in the amount of food and flavors. This is only take out but the food was packed really well and great presentation . Highly recommend, authentic Puerto Rican food and great service. Gracias tio. El flan estaba riquisimo.

Yelp
Great service! Easy to order! Very tasty, bursting of flavor with every bite. Highly recommend for high quality to go food.

Yelp
We have eating here so much, Ordering since day one! Amazing Puertorican food in the valley, finally! Everything is so delicious. they were not kidding when they said they had the best mofongo. and those tostones al ajillo, i hadn't had any in 12 yrs that tasted this amazing. They have forever customers with us.

Vanessa O.

Yelp
I hate leaving a low review but would hate for anyone else to be disappointed like we were. We have no choice but to leave them a 1 star rating. We ordered online, drove over an hour only to find no one was there. Before anyone asks, we made sure it was during their posted business hours. Called their business number and even tried to send a text, no response. We can only guess they were closed because of the holidays (we went between Christmas and New years) but either way, some response at some point would have been nice. We had to go through out bank to get our money back. As stated by others its located in a catering building so its a little odd. They have a ring door bell also installed outside their kitchen though its no use since its not even charged or functional. Advice: If you are really set on trying them out try calling them ahead of time. They clearly don't update things to reflect their actual business hours.

Rosa F.

Yelp
I always have Puerto Rican food at my boyfriends family house, and this food tasted just like it. So much flavor and love put into it. So happy we found this place. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
A unique blend of great flavor and down home good cooking. I highly recommend it. Empanadas a are great! The pork roast reminds me of my moms. Just simply for food. Yes you should try it..

Yelp
the food was amazing, best Puerto Rican food I've had since being in actual Puerto Rico, didn't think it'd be able to settle for LA PR food but I found my spot, this is it, brings back memories of my Abuelita's cooking

Yelp
We drove out 30 minutes to try the food and it is legit!! So delicious and all the flavors I miss from home. Will definitely come back for more!

Yelp
Tainos LA has awesome Food, it was delicious. I went for lunch and had Alcapurrias, 2 Empanadas, white rice and Puerto Rican Beans. The service was fast and the portions were amazing. I'm a big guy and I can eat, but I had a hard time finishing all of this in one sitting. However, I had to go back and get more food to enjoy with the family.

T C.

Yelp
Delicious! Had Tainos supply their authentic Puerto Rican food for my holiday party. The food was incredible. My family and guests loved it. Doing it again next year!!! Thank you Odessa and Nick for taking care of us. Tony C Agoura Hills, CA

Yelp
I have a friend who is Puerto Rican and his father was a chef before he passed. My friend is so critical of food. He ate everything I ordered Alcapurrias, Tostones, Empanadilla De Pollo, Mofongo Pernil and complimented it. After opening the sauce of Mayo/Ketchup he said, they really cook Puerto Rican food. Finally, a place i can order from and know he enjoys it. He even ate the leftovers whereas he never finishes the food I buy him and he throws it out. Odessa was great in her recommendations and her great customer interaction. Unfortunately, no Pasteles currently being made at this restaurant as not many requests. Take out abd Delivery only at this time. Definitely returning.

Manny B.

Yelp
I had the most amazingggggg meal at Tainos L.A. I'm originally from the East Coast so I've really been missing my family and the PR restaurants around there. I was lucky enough to win this free mofongo con churrasco the other day when Tainos L.A. was having a giveaway. I felt like the luckiest person ever!!! The mofongo was amazing. So garlicky and flavorful. The churrasco was also packed with flavor and super trendy/juicy. The photo doesn't do it justice but I had enough leftovers for lunch the next day. More importantly, the staff is so sweet and caring. I waited in my car to pick it up and the chef delivered the mofongo to me himself and gave me an extra flan. I was so touched by their generosity. I cannot wait to go back and bring all of my friends :)

Yelp
This places is legit! The best puertorican food I have ever had in California. This is a pickup location, nothing fancy, the only fancy thing is the food! Great service when you get there. We had the Mofongo & Churrasco, Alcapurrias, Empanadas. Oh well! Looking forward to see this restaurant growing. We will be back soon!

Monica C.

Yelp
The mofongo and arroz con gandules are delicious. I am so happy to have an authentic Puerto Rican meal in the Valley!

Yelp
Coño! Ordered an assortment of items yesterday...ALL GOOD! The mofongos are on point. The food took me back to my time spent in Puerto Rico. I met Nick and Papa Smurf/Edwin...great people. Wish them all the best in this endeavor. Hoping Papa Smurf adds "Frituras de Bacaloa"! to the menu.

Ronald P.

Yelp
Food was amazing as always. Only down side was my order did not print. Not sure if something was wrong with the system that is being used. Turned a twenty five minute wait into an hour wait for food.

8809 Deeplands Rd L.

Yelp
So delicious!! Was craving puertorrican food so much and this place nailed it. The tostones, mofongo, arroz con gandules, beans, etc. were amazing! Worth the 60 miles drive and will definitely do it again soon. Would have posted pictures but we ate it so fast!! Service was great and accommodating too.

Yelp
Came back for seconds and brought two additional friends from PR, We were not disappointed. The food was excellent and my friends were raving about it. It's always good to support good businesses like yours. Keep up the great food and lots of love!

Theo A.

Yelp
Good food, tastes just like we had in PR and nothing like all the other PR restaurants have tried since in Cali. Nice ladies running this. Threw in some free plantains simply cos they thought it would go better with what we ordered. Will be a regular from now!!

Yelp
i never leave reviews but as a born and raised puerto rican in california, the struggle is real to find authentic good puerto rican food. not to name any names, but other places never hit the 'this tastes like home' feeling. everything i've tasted always felt like a cheap copy or a toned down version to appeal to more people. tainos tastes like home, like eating dinner at my abuela's house after school and im so thankful to finally have that here. i have not tried the mofongo yet but the arroz con gandules and pernil is boricua approved! also want to mention that although this is a ghost kitchen, the owners and workers there do have a little seating area outside and they r very nice and attentive! it's a little out of my way but the hour long drive to get the food here is worth it.

Ordered from here yesterday on UberEats. Def enjoyed the food. It's difficult to find authentic food in LA and they did a great job. Well seasoned and hit the spot!
