Where to Find Locally-Loved Dishes Around LA | Eater

"On Melrose near Larchmont, this is the ultimate spot for empanadas and hearty banana leaf-steamed tamales made just like they do on the Gulf of Mexico. Open until 3 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, it’s also a solid choice to roll into after a late night out — the chilaquiles de carne asada and chicken pozole will bring you back to life." - Bernadette Machard de Gramont

I recently ordered delivery and was pleased that the food arrived warm. We selected the green chicken tamal, Al pastor tacos, and carne asada fries. Unfortunately, the overall experience did not meet expectations. The green chicken tamal was lacking in flavor and appeared to rely on green sauce added after cooking, rather than being infused with it during preparation. The Al pastor tacos were particularly disappointing — the majority of the meat consisted of large pieces of fat, and the remaining portions were overcooked and burnt. We ultimately had to throw them away. The carne asada fries were the most enjoyable item, but even they contained fatty and gristly pieces that were difficult to eat. I was genuinely looking forward to this meal, especially after reading numerous positive reviews. It’s disappointing that my experience did not reflect the same level of quality others seemed to have received.

Google
My friend took me here because they said it was one of their favorite places. And it lived up to their word. I got the chorizo and potato empanadas and they were outstanding. On top of the food being good the staff were so nice. I highly recommend this place and next time I'm in la I will be coming back.

Google
On the first day of my trip, I had my very first Mexican meal here. The owner at the counter was incredibly friendly and welcoming. Despite my hesitation and unfamiliarity with the menu, they patiently waited and explained everything to me. The portions were generous, and the food was delicious. I really appreciated how they paid close attention to my specific taste preferences. It exceeded my expectations, and I would love to come back and try other dishes if I have the chance.🥰🥰

Google
We came for dinner for the first time, it was amazing. All the food was very good quality and delicious. The selection was great and they even had many many many types of flans, tacos, breakfast burritos... amazing. I highly recommend; the interior was simple, comfortable, cozy atmosphere and reminiscent of traditional family and a very solid Playlist. Highly recommend!!!

Google
First meal in LA after set up on our hotel and the food was amazing. Great service and very friendly staff. Renowned 100%

Google
Great service and amazing food. 2nd time I’ve been here and they did not disappoint. First time had the asada nachos and taquitos. This time shared the menudo, carne asada breakfast burrito and a chicken mole tamale. Menudo was savory and slightly spicy. Carne asada breakfast burrito came covered in green salsa but the simplicity and quality is what made the burrito taste great! The chicken mole tamale was savory, sweet and nutty. Good chicken to masa ratio. Definitely worth a visit. Look forward to trying the other menu items.

Google
The food is super delicious. The fact that they have a variety of authentic Mexican dishes that are not as typical at other places, such as empanadas and banana leaf tamales, is awesome. Roberto was the person that assisted me and he was very informative. Excellent customer service. They offer fresh aguas frescas. They even have one of my favorite flavors, guanabana. I tried three empanadas: birria, papa con chorizo, and rajas con queso. Along with two mole tamales. Yum! One of my new favorite hole in the wall restaurants for Mexican food in Los Angeles as of today (:

Google
The best Mexican food I've had in L.A. and for a reasonable price at that. The mole sauce is to die for! Excellent house hot-sauce as well, spicy but still with great flavor. Robert was a wonderful host, very kind and helpful with recommendations from the menu. It's a small spot, easy to miss, but you don't want to miss this!

Yelp
This place is a gem and deserves all the great ratings it's already received. It's a simple cafe with counter service and food brought to your table. Everything is delicious, homemade, and authentic to Veracruz. The tamales are especially good. The owner/chef is really nice and pointed out takeaway items like pozole, mole, salsa, chips, guacamole, and homemade drinks like horchata, tamarindo, jamaica, etc. It's not fancy, but it sure is delicious and reasonably priced. Definitely worth a visit.

Yelp
For delivery. Should note Albondigas is more likely made out of pork and or very little beef. Flagging for anyone who doesn't eat pork. Also beans are runny.

Yelp
Great Mexican food if you're in this area. I would always drive past this place and not give it much attention since it gives a hole in a wall vibes. But to my surprise, it offers some good Mexican food in the area. The carne asada burrito was delicious but what sold me was the tortilla chips. They are well seasoned and the salsas that it comes with takes it to the next level. All of it combined gave a great dining experience. I will definitely come back for more. The service was wonderful since it was just us in the restaurant.

Yelp
If you are craving some good authentic Mexican food, you have to give this place a try. I had the chilaquiles with green sauce and birria, and my husband had the carne asada burrito. I also got a side of chips and guacamole and loved that the chips were homemade and warm. They were probably the best tortilla chips I have ever had. The staff were super friendly and helped me decide what to get. The space is a little small but has a good amount of seating. Parking may be a little tough as it is limited to street parking but luckily we didn't struggle to find a spot. Overall highly recommend this place.

Yelp
This is some of the best Mexican food I've had in a while! I ordered takeout and got a bit of everything: two crunchy chicken tacos, chicken enchiladas in green sauce, and a churro. Everything was absolutely delicious and still tasted fresh even after a ~15 minute drive. It was ready pretty quickly, too. I saw nothing but good reviews which, honestly, I'm usually a little skeptical of--but this place is definitely worth it. I was really happy with everything I ordered and I feel like that's pretty rare. I will absolutely be ordering again the next time I'm craving Mexican food.

Yelp
Yup. Writing this review while I'm still eating, cause y'all playing. This food hella good! First off, it's cute and clean customer service is GREAT and plenty of on-street parking. Just please read the signs cause the commute hours make parking tricky. 6 tables inside, a few curbside. It's a little market too, can buy fresh fruit, drinks, and sweets. This about to be a regular spot Will update at I return and try more items. But if ya enchiladas are banging, then everything else gonna be fire. THE FOOD Chicken Enchiladas w/green sauce: look! Stuffed with tender shredded chicken stewed with tomatoes, rolled in fresh tortillas topped with broiled cheese and sour cream. 2 enchiladas plate came with rice and beans. THE SAUCES I don't know if I like the chili oil or hot sauce better but hot damnit, the both were delicious with a nice medium-hot heat. FRESCA Mix of mango, watermelon, pineapple, something else I dunno it was sooooo good!

Yelp
The food was delicious! Limited seating and small area. Service was fine. The price was reasonably. I think this is a great place if your looking for take out Mexican food

Yelp
Such a cute and small Mexican restaurant on Melrose Ave. It's intimate, has great Spanish music, vegetarian/vegan options, and delicious Mexican food and drinks. The gentleman at the cash register hooked it up with a nice sample of their Macha Salsa and it was soooo good. Thanks for the kind service and for a delicious burrito!!

Yelp
Wow-best Mexican food I've had in awhile. We ordered jalapeño and cheese empanadas, chicken empanada combo, shrimp taco combo and guacamole. -Their empanadas are shockingly good, especially the jalapeno and cheese. The dough has just a touch of sweetness that contrasts nicely with the filling. Satisfying crunch but not at all dry and covered in a good amount of queso fresco. -shrimp tacos were cooked perfectly. Tasted very good but I might try something different next time. -guacamole was some of the best we've had in ages. And they actually filled the container so that 8oz meant 8oz, unlike so many other places. -the puréed salsas weren't my favorite but the pico de gallo was fresh and made with really ripe tomatoes. They forgot to make one of the dishes a combo but the food was so delicious it was hard to care. Those empanadas...unforgettably delicious. Can't wait to try the rest of their menu.

Yelp
My roommate and I are obsessed with this place. The neighborhood is so lucky to have this spot in the area. Not only is it so convenient but it's also delicious and hard to stop myself from coming everyday! They have the best tacos, burritos, pozole, and menudo. This is a family owned business and you can usually catch Roberto, the owner, working the front or Chris, his son, helping out around the store. It's a good spot to eat at or you can just bring it back to your place to go!

Yelp
Great new place at the corner of Melrose and Wilton. Friendly and accommodating staff, their service was very nice as I wanted to try all 3 taquito types & they were able to do that. It's a nice bright space and really quality food for a great price. I recommend coming here for a quick lunch stop. Their salsas are also very good, SPECIALLY the housemade chili oil!
google avatar

Yelp
Cozy restaurant off of Melrose/Wilton with great customer service and solid portions. Specifically tried the pork pozole and was so satisfied. The tamales tasted great as well. Will definitely come back when craving some comfort food.

Yelp
Great food, friendly staff, can't wait to try everything on the menu. Had a breakfast burrito today. Super reasonable price and the size was great. Packed with eggs potatoes and choice of meat.

Yelp
This spot reminds me of childhood! I was in LA and saw this little spot right by our hotel and I knew I had to try it. The menu looked super authentic and the food tasted that way as well. The flavors were there, and we loved our tacos. They were super friendly and were very helpful, the food also came hot and quick.
google avatar

Yelp
Right on the corner of Melrose and an easy walk from work for me, this dinette serves fresh tender tamales, empanadas, and enchiladas with amazing sauces. The friendly counter staff patiently answered questions about the menu. We got our drinks of horchata and hibiscus agua fresca and grabbed an empty tabletop. Its bright inside with music and casual but quickly served lunch made this a nice treat. They took cards which was helpful. Will come back for other items on the menu as they also do togo of course. Desserts next time.

Yelp
Originally came for tres leches but they didn't have so got the truffle flan and it was really good! We Ended up getting a chicken empanada too and it was fire definitely coming back. Very cute and clean on the inside. The man working the front was very nice and helpful. They also take ebt. Open 9am-9pm but on Friday and Saturday they stay open till 2am!
google avatar

Yelp
The food here is great! The restaurant is small and unassuming but the owners' and staff's work in the kitchen is huge. This is a neighborhood restaurant that has become a habit for us. Tortas, tamales, mole chicken, camarones Diablo, burritos, and even things like habanero and mango salsa wings. Tamales Veracruz y Mas seems to be able to do it all. Oh! And they cater as well! ¡Lleva te lo, ja! (I hope I got that right. My Spanish isn't what it used to be. In case I didn't - check out this place already!)
google avatar

Claudia C.

Yelp
I had the special of the day - the zucchini blossom empanada which was incredible. It's what you would pay $18 at a fancy restaurant. He had the steak street tacos which were so well seasoned just as you would expect from a little joint like this. Stopped in for a snack but will list likely be back for dinner. And it's open til 3am? Geeze. This could potentially be our go to spot when we want some no nonsense good Mexican food.
google avatar

Anthony A.

Yelp
What can I say about Tamales Veracruz y Mas that it hasn't been spoken for already? It's an experience to come here because, aside from the fact (taste, texture, etc.) of the food, I feel welcomed home from the people who keep it running. The gentleman running the register (I feel bad for not memorizing his name) remembers a friend and I by our laugh. The empanadas have crunch for days. Their agua frescas are always refreshing and delicious and just sweet enough. The salsas take me back to having a home cooked meal with family. The flan es muy delicioso! You want to come here.
google avatar

Carlos Z.

Yelp
Amazing Tamales!! very flavorful and full of meat! Definitely stopping by again to try the rest of their menu!!
google avatar

Paul O.

Yelp
Very disappointed. I spent like $26 bucks on a large horchata, fish tacos and tres leches. The only good thing was the tres leches, the horchata was terrible, the fish tacos were bad. I'm never coming here again, I wasted my lunch break on some nasty tacos and a bunk horchata. Never again, disappointed and filled with regret. The staff was nice tho.
google avatar

G M.

Yelp
Ordered their tamales for Xmas and it was amazing. Surely will order from them again!!

Jan J.

Yelp
Cant't go wrong here. I love their menudo, green enchiladas, and salsas. Only have ordered for delivery - consistent and flavorful.

Hayley F.

Yelp
Wow, everything was sooooo delicious. Squash blossom empanada was insane. All of it so excellent. Will be back :)

Yelp
My wife and I have been looking for a new, authentic Mexican spot because our last favorite place's quality has declined and we don't buy from them anymore. Last week, I found this place. The food looked amazing and... it tastes amazing too! We ordered the birria nachos, birria empanadas, and churros. While the empanadas weren't what I expected (as a dominicano), they were delicious. But hands down, the birria nachos stole the show! And the churros - man, they tasted very legit, authentic, and wonderful. So much so, we ordered from here twice in 6 days haha! This is our new favorite Mexican spot until we find another. Pictures next time. We were too hungry haha.

Jared M.

Yelp
Stopped by for an asada breakfast burrito, and ended up picking up a bottle of their lemonade with chia seeds as well. Delicious combination to start the day. The place was small, but comfy, and the servers were very nice and happy to answer any question I had. Definitely recommend.

Mayra L.

Yelp
The food is always delicious. We always take some empanadas back home since we are not locals. Whenever we are out in the area, we always make a stop here for a good brunch that never disappoints. The service is great and attentive while the ambience feels like home.

Nathan D.

Yelp
Such a great spot! I've been wanting to try it since I drove by a few months ago. Finally got the chance and absolutely loved everything we ordered. The tamal was fantastic! Wet burrito so good! And birria empanadas were amazing! I highly recommend checking it out!
google avatar

Camri R.

Yelp
Y'all better come try one of these! I stopped in for lunch and got a supreme burrito for $14 (regular was $10 + $3 & tax to make it supreme). I was not expecting the burrito to be a hefty 2-hander lol. It was super filled and flavorful. I loved every bite. Plus I believe I saw a sign that they're open until 2:30am?!?!?! I'm so glad I gave them a try.

Elizabeth J.

Yelp
Okay let's see .... First time here and really wanted to like it BUT. 1) ordered a carne asada burrito, the meat was very chewy like cheap meat chewy. 2) it took about 40 minutes for it to be ready. 3) it was COLD when I received it. 4) Mostly rice (some beans) I am a Latina and I guess we expect our people's food to be 10/10 but ‍ I also got an horchata which was pretty tasty, over all the wait, the food and the price it's definitely not worth it. I paid 25$ for a burrito and horchata and maybe 2-3 chips lol
google avatar

Darren B.

Yelp
Excellent Quality and Taste! Our company does breakfast Wednesday every 2 weeks and we had some tacos and burritos from VMF for todays lunch and the employee feedback was stellar. The Asada Soft Tacos were the star of the show, but the burritos are a very generous portion and the flavors were really good and the various flavor layers were easy to taste individually, which most burritos is just a tube of squished together ingredients. Everyone was very happy with the food and it was also excellently prepared and delivered on-time and warm and fresh!
google avatar

Hwd 3.

Yelp
I just ordered 4 burritos, got back home and opened them and this is what I found. Burritos wrapped up in moldy tortillas. Took it back and asked the cook to come out and try the burrito he made us, but he wouldn't come out. You could have seriously poisoned us!!! DONT EAT HERE!!!
google avatar

Bianca M.

Yelp
They have the best chilaquiles, breakfast burrito and orange juice. The service was great !

Nic C.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I ate here yesterday. He just moved in with me from Texas so he has been on the hunt for some authentic Mexican food here. He got the chicken empanada and the queso & jalapeño empanada and he loved it so much he outwardly could not contain himself and practically shouted. They were DELICIOUS!! Everything tasted so fresh! He is still talking about them. Woman at the front counter was very nice. I asked her if they had breakfast, so happy to find out they do, and we will definitely be back to try that out and other things out.
google avatar

Curt M.

Yelp
Came for NugTown and they didn't disappoint!! Great service and even bomber food! Went with the buffalo sauce

Julia F.

Yelp
Beef soup had meat skin instead of actual thick meat . I was unsatisfied by my food. The restaurant needs to add more beef meat to their sopa de res dish and not just mainly the skin.
google avatar

Steve S.

Yelp
I bought burritos, tamales and horchata for the crew of roofers working at my house. Everyone enjoyed the food, thanks so much!!
google avatar

Bruce Q.

Yelp
I love this place, super excellent range of tacos and similar foods, fresh juices, a nice vibe, and very friendly. Also puppy friendly.
google avatar

Andy M.

Yelp
Food was excellent, staff was friendly and overall a good value. Dining room is nothing fancy but it was clean and comfortable for a lunch with friends.
google avatar

Sergio G.

Yelp
One of the best wet burritos I've had . Saw this little hole in the wall and decided to give it a try. It did not disappoint. Had me coming back trying other dishes. Reasonably priced for exceptional quality and great service.
google avatar

Reed C.

Yelp
This is THE spot to go for the real deal mexican food. Roberto is personable, friendly, professional, and all around a great local business owner more deserving of support than so many franchises and chains. I'm a huge fan of his. The place is homey, warm, and that beautiful kind of simple that lets you know this place is about one thing: good food and good times. Cannot recommend enough. I go every week, and always walk away happy.
google avatar

Shae M.

Yelp
Everything I've ever ordered here has beeen superb. We usually order delivery because its a bit far from us. But dining in is an experience and highly recommended. Its such a pretty little restaurant. Authentic mouth watering food. You can tell its made with love. I love the shrimp tacos, pozole, burritos, tamales and so much more. I want to eventually try everything on the menu lol. Soo many options! And its never been a miss. The customer service is also as amazing as the food! Overall, 5 stars for me without a doubt.
google avatar

Ramie M.

Yelp
Love this neighborhood spot. Food is yummy and fast and convenient. The people that work there are so friendly.

Ruben G.

Yelp
A must for breakfast or other meals. We love coming here for their chilaquiles, tamales and cafe de olla. Well priced and nice environment for authentic Mexican food!
google avatar

Mr L.

Yelp
Came in here for breakfast burrito took a long time. I guess I'm gonna come back and see if I can give them one more try but you guys need to be more attended to the customers.
google avatar

Gregory Z.

Yelp
This is my neighborhood Mexican joint. Good people; good food, nice location and Reasonable prices! Fancy and exotic it may not be BUT that is not what's on the menu! Taquitos! Burritos! Homemade flan and Desserts! Even Ceviche (sometimes)... Good portions and quick prep when it ain't crazy busy. So support The Cruz and enjoy!
google avatar

Daniela D.

Yelp
Veracruz has quickly become my new favorite spot in town for good, authentic, Mexican food. Their menu is great and offers the most amazing nachos, classic pozole, tamales, and even birria. The owner Emi is very nice and all her suggestions were amazing. My friends and I were very happy with the quick and friendly service. The ambiance is super cute and you can eat your food dancing to Selena playing in the background and watch the city pass by. I'm always for supporting women owned businesses and this one is a no brainier if you love delicious food. I'll definitely be back again.

S P.

Yelp
Asked for extra salsa with my order and didn't even get much complimentary salsa. 2 salsas for a $50 order. Huge waste of money - not even enough salsa for the carne asada fries.

Yelp
