40 Affordable Places to Eat in NYC

"The pitas are puffy, freshly made, and served warm, and the falafels are some of the best in town, lighter and crunchier than usual — they won’t sit in your stomach like a stone, and they are perfectly seasoned. For a larger meal, pick the falafel platter, which contains a dozen elements, including the spicy green relish zhoug. Multiple forms of hummus and the eggplant sabich also available at this mainly vegan spot that offers a cauliflower shawarma." - Robert Sietsema

20 Top Fast-Casual Restaurants of Midtown Manhattan | Eater NY

"Falafel powerhouse Taïm is the definite move at Urbanspace’s location on Lexington. The vegetarian menu of falafel platters and sandwiches, hummus, and salads is also mainly vegan, making it an ideal stop for anyone — and meat-eaters will still be satisfied by the high flavor of owner Einat Admony’s food." - Jasmine Ting

Google
While the food is pretty good, the service, atmosphere, and price lead this to be a 4-star review. First, the food is really tasty. Everything is very mildly spiced but fresh ingredients make this taste good. The warm pita bread they serve plates with are also extremely delicious (soft and flavorful). Service is ok - staff aren’t friendly, just terse. Atmosphere is also ok - not much seating and not the cleanest. Lastly, price is way overinflated from what it should be. A pita sandwich is very small and shouldn’t be $13 ($16 after tax/tip). And the bowls start at $17 ($21 after tax/tip)! Both of these prices need to drop at least three dollars before it is reasonable compared to other restaurants in the surrounding area.

Google
Great for vegetarian/gluten free eaters. The server recommended options including gluten free crispy eggplant for the Sabich Salad bowl. I added the falafel which was so very good. Very tasty.

Google
Ordered eggplant pita & falafel platter. It’s decent, fine for a quick lunch or dinner. Not much seating inside. Very quick service which is great. Wouldn’t order falafel platter again. Definitely get the eggplant pita.

Google
I’m a Cava and Naya fan but this place have definitely take the first position as my favorite one, everything is perfect, fresh ingredients, nice presentation, great customer service. I can’t describe how satisfy I am with this place that I want to have it every day. Thank you Tamam for offering such a great experience!!!

Google
Super soft pita bread. Falafel is tasty. Price is reasonable for UES. Will return again.

Google
The service and food are great! We got 2 falafel platters, which come with hummus, falafel, tahini, pickles, sauerkraut, pickled cabbage, israeli salad and rice/quinoa. It was delicious! There isn’t much room inside to sit (only 3 tables), but during the warmer months they have outdoor seating as well. The owner is very nice!

Google
SO SO delicious! This is certainly the best Mediterranean food I've ever had. The falafels are perfectly crispy, the hummus is so earthy and smooth, and their vegetables are so fresh. The falafel pita wrap I had was so filling, it was entirely worth the price of $13 with tax. Also, I highly recommend the mango juice. It was exactly the refreshment I needed before continuing to explore the city.

Andreas Turanski

Google
Always delicious, always fresh falafel, house made hummus, and lots of food for the money! So glad they have whole wheat pita every time I come and that you're all vegan! Every time I'm within 15 blocks I go there!

Yelp
Wow, where do I even begin? Tamam is a must-try for anyone in the mood for fresh, flavorful Mediterranean food that hits the spot every time. I just had the falafel sandwich here, and it was absolutely divine. The falafel was crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and packed with so much flavor -- you could tell it was made with high-quality, fresh ingredients. The sandwich itself was perfectly balanced. The veggies (tomatoes, cucumbers, and lettuce) were incredibly crisp and fresh, and the tangy tahini sauce took everything to the next level. You know when you can tell that the ingredients are just *fresh*? Yeah, this is one of those places. The pita was soft and warm, holding everything together without falling apart, which is a big deal when you're dealing with such a flavorful filling. The service was quick and friendly, and the atmosphere was so welcoming. It's got that cozy, vibrant vibe that makes you want to stay and enjoy your meal, but you can also grab and go if you're in a hurry. I was in and out in no time, but didn't feel rushed at all. All in all, Tamam is an absolute gem. The combination of super fresh ingredients, amazing flavor, and top-notch service has made me a fan for life. Highly recommend if you're in the area and looking for a delicious, quick meal!

Yelp
An absolutely great vegan place for lunch! The falafel itself was easily the star of the show. It was fried per order and it was insanely fresh and crispy. They Load up your pita sandwich, if you get a platter they load it up as well. The hummus is creamy, the tahini is great, pickled veggies all pair so well, pita is fluffy. I really want to try the sabbich as the eggplant looks really really good!
google avatar

Nishad J.

Yelp
This place is amazing!! I had the eggplant sabich on a pita sandwich with the soup of the day. Eggplant is very hit or miss for me, but this was delicious. Two giant lightly fried eggplant slices in a perfectly baked pita with delicious fresh vegetables chickpeas and hummus tahini. I am obsessed!! Wish this place had more locations in Brooklyn closer to where I live. Love the go vegan signs outside too!

Yelp
I'd read some hype about this place, and Israeli/Mediterranean food is in my top 5 favorite cuisines, so I suggested to a friend that we meet there for lunch. Unfortunately, I guess I didn't read carefully. It's more of a takeout place than a restaurant. A couple of little tables and a small counter inside. No restroom. No table service. That said, the bowl with hummus and falafel and a couple of delicious toppings that I had, for well under $20. was worth it. Quinoa, if I wanted it. Pickled red cabbage if I wanted it. You order at the counter, menu on boards above and behind. We both really enjoyed the food!

Yelp
I was so lucky to find this spot while in the area! Seriously fresh, and SERIOUSLY flavorful. I love the simplicity, but also the deliciousness. Staff was so nice, and had good energy. They have outdoor seating, and indoor seating. Outside wasn't too hot. Great find on Yelp!

Yelp
BEST falafel I have had in NYC, and I am very picky about my falafel. The falafel is so moist and green, crispy with all the right textures. My favorite thing to get here is the falafel pita which is stuffed to the brim with at least 5 pieces of falafel, hummus, crunchy fresh and pickled veggies in the softest pita. This time, we also got the falafel hummus (good, comes with a side of fresh pita, but not the best hummus I ever had) an a side of sabich (a bit bland on its own, but not overly oily. Thinly battered and crisp, great if you love eggplant, and would probably be better in a platter or sandwich for more flavor) and israeli salad (very refreshing on the side). Pita is very very top notch and tastes really good when it first comes out, fresh and fluffy and warm. The pita does cool down fast though so would eat the pita first. First time I had Tamam was 3 years ago and their quality is still amazing. The portions are huge and very filling; affordable too since we paid around $40 for a dinner for 2!! Service is very quick and the shop is small with nice sidewalk seating... just wish they had a location downtown!

Yelp
I'm not a vegan and I do not like falafel. That said, Tamam is one of my favorite places in the area. If you haven't tried sabich, enlighten yourself and be amazed. If you like hummus and fresh vegetables, this place is for you. The sandwiches are excellent, but if you're hungry, get a platter. Their pita is phenomenal. $15 gets you enough food that you definitely won't be hungry for a bit. 5/5. Don't miss it.
google avatar

Alex H.

Yelp
Was hungry for something good before hitting up the Met and if you know the upper east side is that it's pricey to eat up there so your options are super limited to carts or fast food and this place hit the spot The guys working here weee super friendly and let me tell you the portions and the flavor and vibe was amazing Sooo good! If you want amazing vegetarian food come here

Yelp
Could this be the fluffiest falafel I've eaten in my entire life??? Quite possibly. As close to falafel perfection as I've ever tasted. Slightly crisp exterior, moist fluffy interior, good texture not too grainy, not too salty, allowing a good balance of flavors when eaten together with the other sandwich fixings. Ok I'm no expert on Mediterranean cuisine and only eat it occasionally but I'd happily eat this more often. And they're vegan! which funny I had no idea until after eating here and it didn't even cross my mind that there wasn't any meat served here. Walking in on a Saturday afternoon 2pm the store wasn't too crowded, a few tables of 2 sitting outside in under the covered outdoor seating area. Inside there are a couple high-top tables with stools with seating for 6-7 people. No line. I ordered a pita sandwich $12.50 with (if you couldn't tell from above) falafel and all the toppings. There were maybe 4-5 very good-sized falafels included. Other components included red cabbage slaw, cucumber salad, pickles, regular cabbage sauerkraut of sorts (pardon my lack of familiarity with this!), sliced red onions, tahini sauce, fresh chopped herbs (parsley?). All stuffed gently and generously into a toasted warm pita. DEEelicious! I also got the pita chips $2 made with the in-house pita bread with was very crispy-crunchity and the slightest bit chewy in the middle from being made with fresh bread. Terrific lunch here and I will be back!

Yelp
I always order takeout from this place. Quick and fresh. The service on the phone is good and they listen to any requests. Not sure how the restaurant is but would love to visit. This is more lebenese style falafel without white and red sauce. Despite the lack of these classic sauces, the falafel is very well made! Pure is fresh and soft. Falafel is tasty and crunchy. The green sauce adds nice spice. The pickles and salad fillings add to the taste. I always love ordering from here and will definitely continue ordering

Nancy J.

Yelp
Great food. Huge portions. We got the falafel platter and sandwich. Walking distance from the Met.
google avatar

Minique D.

Yelp
Delicious! Stuffed to the brim if you choose all the toppings. It's a small hole in the wall place so not really a place to sit and eat unless you're cool with shed dining. Quick turn around from order to payment. I'm sure during the lunch rush there's a bit of a wait because the place is small. The falafels were crispy and moist - balanced in flavor and filling. I would definitely come back.
google avatar

Elisa G.

Yelp
Fresh delicious falafel sandwich -- falafel was warm and tender and all the fixin's were on point.
google avatar

Paula C.

Yelp
Great lunch spot, a must if you are vegan. It's a small place with a small menu, very clean and you get your order pretty quickly. The best part is that the food is delicious.

William J.

Yelp
As a general rule of thumb, I'm fundamentally opposed to vegan restaurants; Tamam, however, is an unequivocal exception to the rule. They make liars of all restaurants who claim to be "the best falafel in NYC" by serving a falafel that is genuinely other worldly. This falafel extends one's understanding of the top end of the food group. Everything in the restaurant is fresh and is prepared directly in front of you. The staff are exceptionally kind and the pita is as soft as a cloud. Wow, what a restaurant.
google avatar

Romi K.

Yelp
I cannot plug this place enough. I've been coming for years and it's my favorite falafel place in the city. The pita sandwich is delicious and their hummus and tahini are so good. The pitas are always fresh and very soft. The service is quick and they're very accommodating with large orders.
google avatar

Amy Y.

Yelp
I've had takeout here a few times, and they have never failed me. They are listed on Uber Eats but the day I ordered from there, their system unfortunately did not work, no fault of their own. The place is small and has a few window seats but people mainly get their orders to go. Their hummus, falafel platter and bowl are some of their most popular items. Each meal comes with two soft chewy pita breads. The star of the show is definitely their melt in your mouth, soft and butter-like hummus. I cannot seem to find any other store that compares to their hummus. Service is quick, and they're always busy during lunchtime. And also try their low calorie flavored sodas!
google avatar

Abbe K.

Yelp
Fresh, full, fluffy pita filled with perfectly spiced large falafel joined crunchy creamy red cabbage and pickles. How can you go wrong? They got it right! Easy pick up.
google avatar

Raquel A.

Yelp
This may be the best falafel in NY. Its fried on the spot per order. The bowls are executd perfectly and platter is big enough for two. Its more of a take out spot and a few seats and stools available. Its quick and always good! The staff have the best system and are generous with the portions.
google avatar

Jo I.

Yelp
First place was great, I can see why there's a line going out the door! On this visit, I got the eggplant platter, $15.50 ($16.88 after tax). Absolutely delicious! Eggplant was crispy, not too thinly sliced. Veggies and quinoa were both fresh, hummus was a smooth puree. That pita bread was extra fluffy. If your order does not normally come with one, it's worth the extra cost to get it. I ordered online to save time, and I picked it up. They work fast, and the food is fresh and tasty. I wish I could give 4.5 stars, but there is no bathroom, Limited drink options, which are mostly can soft drinks. Very limited seating, only seven bar stools on a high table. However they do have extra ( but also limited) seating outside in an outdoor shelter. I would come back if I'm in the area again.
google avatar

Allysa C.

Yelp
I'm not Vegan and I thought the food was amazing. I had a hard time understanding what the woman behind the counter was asking me but we figured it out. The falafel pita sandwich was amazing. The pita was handcrafted, fluffy, soft, and perfectly cooked. The falafel was seasoned well, with a subtle kick, moist, and had a yummy penetrable crunchy exterior. The spicy sauce was great and definitely had a kick. All of the add ons that come with the sandwich were perfect. I would absolutely come here again. They even accommodated our large party, though there weren't seats left for any other guests. Fast service and dining, perfect for a time crunch when you need to catch the subway and don't have time to sit and dine. I believe there are about 9 or 10 seats total inside. There is also a cute market next store that patrons can visit to help stay warm during the winter season. If you like falafel you should definitely try this place.
google avatar

Rebecca S.

Yelp
Tamam is soooooo good. Healthy and fresh and vegan! I really really love the cauliflower platter with hummus and fresh veggies. The fried eggplant is also delicious and a truly massive portion. The portions are generous The priced are reasonable The veggies are always super fresh. Love the hummus too!

Yelp
This is a great spot for a quick lunch! Pros: + Vegetarian friendly + Reasonably priced + Amazing falafel + Fast, quick lunches IG: QueenOfAdventureNYC

Yelp
Tamam, is a small, vegan Middle Eastern restaurant on the UES cooking up some of the best falafel sandwiches in the city. Not to be overshadowed, the sabich is not to be skipped on, with its large pieces of deep-fried eggplant sandwiched in a pita. Never seen or tasted one like this before. Tamam uses fresh, organic ingredients including on the Israeli salad, pickles, and tahini the pitas are stuffed with. Must try the cauliflower next time. You can opt for these toppings on a platter or salad bowl as an alternative to the pita. The place is super casual and the service is friendly and efficient. There are four counter seats inside and some outdoor seating, perfect for people-watching. Or better yet, take it to the park, just three blocks away for a wonderful mid-day meal.
google avatar

Samantha F.

Yelp
So good! We get the falafel pita and the sabich pita. Both are so amazing! They are filled with yummy and flavorful ingredients. Our go-to lunch in the park.
google avatar

Katherine G.

Yelp
Delicious felafel and hummus! The ambiance is casual. They have some outdoor covered seating, not sure if it's heated. The service was fast. Would definitely visit again!

Yelp
In a city teeming with fast casual Mediterranean spots, Tamam takes the crown - and it's vegan!! I happened across Tamam by chance when looking for food after a day at the Frick Madison, and what was supposed to be a quick bite after the museum turned into a life changing experience!! My friends and I shared a hummus platter and the eggplant sabich sandwich and seriously had our minds blown. First - the eggplant sandwich is out of this world. Thick slabs of eggplant are perfectly fried and crispy, stuffed in soft pita and paired with nutty and creamy tahini, with a hit of spice from their delicious green sauce. After I tried this sandwich once, I was on a MISSION to find a similar eggplant sandwich in the city and none could compare (Miznon's tomato-scented eggplant pita sandwich is also bomb but it's different vibes - less crispy, more soupy). You have to get this. I've ordered this to work before (I work on the UES now and the proximity to Tamam is ) and it still manages to stay crispy during the delivery process. The eggplant portion is so generous and this sandwich can definitely last two meals. Second - whatever they put in their hummus is unreal. It's a bit thinner than your typical hummus (and more tahini forward maybe), which I actually enjoy. It tastes soooo fresh, the bright herbs and olive oil flavor shining through. It packs a little bit of a punch too. Seriously the best hummus I've ever had in the city. I'm craving it as I write this. I've tried the platter here too, and while it's good, it can feel a little random with a lot of different pickled elements together. I would stick with the sandwich - I feel like the flavors make more sense together. This is also a huge portion though, definitely can last two meals! My work got the pita chips to dip in the hummus, which wasn't my fave but seemed to be a hit! It's basically just their pita toasted until it's crispy, which I thinks ruins the fluffy goodness of the pita bread, but it's not bad!
google avatar

Meredith S.

Yelp
Why is everyone obsessed with this place?!! To be fair, middle eastern food is not my favorite cuisine so I might be biased here but my falafels were dry. I don't like vegetarian food as I am a meat eater and the price points are too steep. ( I will say the portions are quite large.) They have no inside seating and need enhanced our door dining options
google avatar

Abigale L.

Yelp
The best falafel in Manhattan! I love how they do the pita bread so soft and tasty ! The eggplant was supper good too. I will definitely come back more often! Their service was good too!
google avatar

Mike S.

Yelp
Popped in here for a quick meal before a show in the area and it was the right choice. The service was quick ordering a falafel sandwich and hummus bowl with eggplant. Easy to see and grab various drinks by the register. They have high top tables inside, outdoor seating in front of the restaurant and inside a shed on the street (We choose inside since some dudes were leaning around the shed smoking doobies lol). The falafel sandwich I ordered without onions - it was a solid little football of a pita with something good in every bite. Falafel, Israeli salad, pickled cabbage and pickles with tahini tying it all together really is so satisfying. The hummus bowl is fairly large added eggplant to this - its probably meant to be shared because its a lot of hummus to eat. The hummus is impossibly silky smooth with the satisfyingly crisp eggplant and whole chickpeas - a little spicy dressing was added and of course a swirl of EVOO. I found it really cool and considerate that when we sat inside we were next to speaker playing music - it was a little loud, but without asking they lowered the music. As with everything nowadays the prices have gone up (25% increase in sandwich price I notice last couple of years) - everything is fresh, delicious and filling. A great choice with a steady stream of customers confirmed.

Yelp
Went here since this is also from the owners of Mesiba. Cute small falafel spot on the UES. Short line when I came since it was right before Yom Kippur and they were closing early. I got the standard falafel with everything in it and it hit the spot. The falafel had a nice crunch and I liked the other pita filling accompaniments. Only thing that would have been nice would be a different seasoning or mixture to enhance flavor and make the falafel more unique.
google avatar

Bethany B.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious fast casual falafel joint! A true highlight of my recent visit to NY. Quick, efficient, absolutely scrumptious.
google avatar

Sadie H.

Yelp
The falafel pita sandwich was huge. Inside the pita was Israeli salad, falafel, tahini, red cabbage and more. No skimping anywhere on the portions which was excellent, and I'm glad it was inside a paper because the pita was overflowing. The flavors were good, if not a little mild, but was really impressive was the freshness and taste of the chopped veggies inside, which were cool and redesigning compared to the hot falafel. The staff at the register and assembling the food were kind, paid attention to the things I left out, and quickly got me my food.
google avatar

Christine M.

Yelp
Tamam offers delicious healthy food. I ordered the Falafel Platter which comes with Quinoa, Israeli Salad, Hummus, Chickpeas, Pickles, Pita and three sauces. The platter was flavorful and the falafels were well made. The portion sizes are large and priced well. Takeout service was timely. Tamam is a great place for lunch. Looking forward to trying more dishes!
google avatar

Trisha C.

Yelp
Great vegan food. I had the Falafel bowl, and you can see from the photo that it was fresh and delicious.
google avatar

Brandon T.

Yelp
I have to concur with the 95% of reviewers on here, this place makes a MEAN falafel pita sandwich! I'd like to preface by saying I'm the opposite of a vegan, love falafel sandwiches, and wasn't missing anything without having dairy-based ingredients included. To start off, the pita bread itself was very fresh, a lot of places overlook this ingredient and you get a dry sandwich that's falling apart everywhere. All of the ingredients looked and tasted great, and they layered the falafel and ingredients so you aren't chasing bites around looking for the falafel or have none for the second half. Plenty of seating outside of the restaurant especially for a takeout spot. The girl forgot to make it spicy would be my only complaint, however it was still fire so really can't complain!
google avatar

Ken D.

Yelp
Good food! Falafels very crunchy and tasty. Pita was also very warm, soft, and delicious. Can't speak to authenticity, but hummus also creamy and delicious. I got a plate with grilled cauliflower. It was drizzled with some olive oil. It was very well prepared and a nice charred flavor. Seating is very limited. You have to sit right next to other people. There are only 2-3 small tables at the window and they're right up against each other. Takeout would be the best bet. They play music VERY loudly also. I would've preferred to do take out. I recommend the food for the taste. Not exactly somewhere I'd want to spend more than 10 mins in though.
google avatar

Iris C.

Yelp
Just highlighting a casual but underrated gem that one of my foodie friends introduced to me. I've been getting really into Mediterranean food and this offers affordable, generous portions that are heart and belly-filling. They're quick on preparing your food and they really deliver in taste. Efficiency, taste, cost= a triple win.... I love that they have so many different options to customize your order, and the ingredients are always fresh. The eggplant sabich platter is so delicious. They have the crispy texture down right. I will be back soon!
google avatar

Anthony P.

Yelp
Pretty solid falafel! I've found that the most delicious and fragrant falafel is very green inside from all the herbs integrated into the batter. Very crispy, not super warm though (warm falafel is such a difference-maker) . Some falafel can be fritters - small and very textural, this wasn't that but more standard falafel texture. Got the falafel bowl which rang up as 16 bucks but that'll be most places these days. all the components were delicious and well done, including the hummus, pickled onions and love the tiny crunchy pieces of couscous for that texture! Don't forget to ask for spicy sauce on the side.
google avatar

Latha P.

Yelp
Best falafel in the area. My son and I love this place. Get their platter or the sandwich in a pita and you will be so satisfied! If you get the platter, you can even get two meals.
google avatar

Hailey D.

Yelp
had this as our post-MET lunch and were not disappointed. the falafel was crispy, the hummus creamy, and the overall platter was a great portion for the price!! the service was quick and the line wasn't long. it was clear this is a favorite for lunch, even at 2pm
google avatar

Diana S.

Yelp
Me and my mother stumbled upon this hidden gem that catered to both of our taste buds! The menu showcased an impressive array of vegan dishes, with falafel taking center stage. From traditional falafel wraps and platters to innovative fusion creations, there was something to cater to every palate. The options were abundant, including gluten-free and oil-free alternatives, ensuring that dietary preferences and restrictions were well accommodated. The selection of pickles, fresh vegetables, and aromatic herbs provided a refreshing contrast, adding an extra dimension to each bite. Definitely coming back!!!

Gabby S.

Yelp
Outstanding every time. The best fast food shaped spot in the city by far. Excited to keep coming back
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
Delicious, fresh, and great customer service! Popped in here for a quick lunch yesterday and we were greeted by friendly servers who briefly explained the menu. I got a falafel pita with everything on it! The sandwich was PACKED with falafel and it was delicious--crispy and savory nuggets of flavor. Probably some of the best I've had in the city. I love spicy, so I asked for extra green sauce on the side and this elevated the sandwich. Automatically added this place to my go-to bites when I'm in the are!
google avatar

Diane M.

Yelp
Great falafel spot near the Guggenheim and Met. They serve plates, bowls, and pita sandwiches. Seating inside is limited, but there's lots of seating outdoors. Service was fantastic and fast- they made my falafel fresh! Kosher and vegan.
google avatar

Shane S.

Yelp
Tamam Falafel is awesome! During my near week in SF I had three meals here. Five stars on yelp for good reason. Fresh ingredients. It is all vegan. The meals here are healthy, tasty, affordable, and reasonably priced. For bowls you choose falafel, eggplant or cauliflower. It comes with warm chickpeas, quinoa, romaine lettuce, chopped cucumber, tomato, red cabbage, Israeli salad, pickles, and tahini. You can also get a side of pita or whole pita on the side. Expect a long line onto the street during pick lunch times. I wish they had a place like this in SF. Middle Eastern food is one of my favorite vegan cuisines up there with Indian, Ethiopian and Japanese. Pro tip: If you like it spicy request a few hot peppers to accompany it.
google avatar

Austin K.

Yelp
I got the falafel platter as well, and while it's not a bad falafel, it's just alright in my opinion. Also, they only give you 6 falafel, so I would stick with the eggplant which is 2 huge slices and taste better too.

Vincy L.

Yelp
Fav quick Greek food spot, and I am not even a vegan lol Everything on the menu slayed, so comforting and pleasing, I am glad we have this cute shop in the neighborhood

Lauren L.

Yelp
Amazing fresh Pita. Great portion sizes. Wonderful healthy meal option 10/10. Tried falafel salad and was simply over joyed.
