The Best Poke in Honolulu: 11 Restaurants to Hit | Eater

"One of Honolulu’s oldest poke destinations is in the back of Tamashiro, a grocery store and seafood market in Kalihi dating back to the 1940s that offers one of the widest varieties of seafood in town. The options at the poke counter are equally broad, with about 30 varieties, from Korean-style raw crab poke (you’ll need to suck the meat out of the shell) to ginger kajiki (mild and lean with marlin) to limu aku (skipjack tuna, stronger in flavor than ‘ahi, which makes this a crowd-pleaser that sells out fast)." - Martha Cheng

Run by the Tamashiro family for decades, this bright-pink Kalihi landmark is famed for fresh, auction-sourced seafood and one of Honolulu’s widest poke selections. Frequently praised by Honolulu Magazine and Eater, it’s where locals shop for the real deal.

One of the best place to find the fresh fish and there are lots of fish kinds to offer. The poke is very fresh. Highly recommended if you are looking for some good local fish. There are parking lots available right in front.

Finally made it to Tamashiro after hearing about it for so long, and I’m really glad I did. The vibe when you walk in is super chill and welcoming — nothing fancy, just local and laid-back, which I appreciated. A friend recommended I try the Lomi Oio, which is definitely one of those “local favorites” thats not everyone might be used to. It’s got that unique, soft texture — definitely an acquired taste, but I’m glad I gave it a shot. We also ordered the king crab (so fresh!) and “Da Real Kine” poke — turns out it actually won Poke Fest in 2020, and yeah, it lives up to the hype. What stood out the most was the service. Super fast, and the staff actually listens. If you’re not sure about something, they’ll offer you a sample, no problem. That kind of attention makes a big difference. I’ll be back for sure.

First time here. Poke is fressshhhh. Need to get that ahi with creamy crab sauce. Friendly workers. Some groceries, and seafood.

I expected to be super busy for Mother's Day, so I planned to get there as as they opened. Limited parking up front, but it was early enough that parking was no issue. Inside the store was clean and organized. Fresh poke, always made just right. Flavor is top notch. Service counter is efficient and thorough. The inside the store is clean and organized, the shelves on Sunday morning was empty. But im here for the poke and nothing else.

Google
This is a great fish market! The prices are super reasonable. We bought 2lbs of marlin, 1lb of shrimp and 2 whole Talapia. The staff were super kind and helpful. Will be coming back next week ❤️

Google
Great selection of sashimi fish 🐟 in Honolulu area !! So much fun to learn about this business style for me . If you’re looking for whole fish for sashimi , this is the place you should go ,but you should know that no place to eat and sit down this place ,and not a fancy tourist shop 😊 and little bit fishy shop😉like a fish shop in Japan 😊🐟 but I still love it 🥰

Google
Can I call this place a hidden gem or everyone knows about it already? I followed the famous Food Youtuber, Mark Wiens, here and was very satisfied. It is a local market that serves fresh poke and other pre-made dishes. Hot lunches served between 11.00-13.30 Mon to Fri. Since we were there early morning, we got to try their poke bowl of Amichili ($12.95) and a side of half a pound Spicy tuna ($10.27). Both were super delicious! The fish were smooth and buttery. I guess it is because they’ve never been frozen. The staff are nice and friendly. Limited parking available in front of the shop. No eat-in corner. Highly recommend!!

Yelp
Quality Service and quality fish. All the poke is a 'must try' while visiting Hawaii. Pricey but worth every penny.

Yelp
I remember the first time coming here. A local friend of mine said, "if you are looking for poke, go to Tamashiro Market". They have been serving up some delicious poke before and are a staple at parties. Nowadays, there are so many poke places but they are constantly good.

Yelp
One of the best places to get poke. This is a hole in the wall mom and pop market. Poke is fresh and so delicious. If you're in town give this place a try, you won't regret it. They sell garlic taro chips, it matches perfectly with the poke! Parking is limited but you can park right across at the church.

Yelp
12/23/24 Went to pick up my pre order slab of salmon for sashimi Surprised n happy to find that they had removed the skin and had packaged it too! Garlic salted + pepper then broiled it for an extra treat!

Yelp
Omg this is the best poke I've had! So happy I got to try it when I was in Hawaii. I wish I would've gotten it more when I was there. The fish tasted soo fresh and perfectly marinated with a lot of flavor. Big portions for $15/bowl. If I were to compare this to poke at foodland, I would say this is better. Service is fast. There isn't seating inside or out so definitely a take-out kind of place.

Yelp
Tamashiro Market had some of the freshest poke we had on our trip to Hawaii. Came here around 9:30am on a Thursday morning - lots of different poke as well as seafood options inside. We got: 1/4lb Ahi w/ onion This was 28.95/lb - the most expensive one I think they had but still very very fairly priced as I think the poke at ono seafood was $30+ something a lb & I would argue that Tamashiro market was even more fresh. This has a very subtle kick to it and was really well seasoned 1/4lb Ahi w/ creamy crab sauce This was 25.95/lb and noted as a 2021 winner of Poke Fest. We could tasted the sweet crab w/ some subtle bright citrus notes as well. I think this would've been even more delicious on rice but our favorite between the 2 was the ahi with onion. Highly recommend stopping by - I wish we had time to visit more than once during our trip.

Yelp
At the end of my trip to O'ahu, I was resigned to think that real Hawaiian poke wasn't for me. Granted, we only got poke from Foodland, so what do I know? But I wanted to give it another go before heading to the airport, and after a quick Yelp search, we spontaneously came here. The parking lot is small and chaotic, and there was a long line for their poke. They're a regular market, selling raw fish and other snacks, but everything is fresh- we saw them preparing the entire tuna body for sale which was cool to watch. Their ahi is good, but their marlin was especially rich in flavor and delicious! You can order it as a meal set with warm rich as well. The sauces were simple and straightforward which I appreciated as you were still able to taste the fish itself.

Yelp
Love their fish always fresh ! My Cat reviews it at 5 stars ! He always runs away when I buy store sashimi hee Tamashiros fish is not stinky ! Trust your Cat

Yelp
Tamashiro Market was very much no on my list of new places to try in Oahu. But when the sushi chef at the omakase restaurant tells you this is where he gets his fish, well, you pay attention quickly and head on over as soon as the opportunity arises. By this point I was pretty disgustingly full from all the food that I had been eating, so I went for an ahi onion poke bowl and blue marlin poke on the side. All I'm gonna say is...this is straight up FIRE. Of all the poke I've had on the island, this is the best...PERIOD. Staff here are really friendly! Told them we were noobs, they explained everything well. When you check out, they'll give you all the utensils and napkins you need! So yeah, I will definitely need to come back here next time I come to Oahu. Too good. Just too good!
google avatar

Isabel L.

Yelp
My family always stops by here whenever we need a certain type of fish for dinner. We especially love the Hamachi Kama. I always make sure to get some spicy tuna poke as a treat. Just a heads up that the parking lot is incredibly small and not laid out very well. Street parking is also tough.
google avatar

Alan L.

Yelp
Came here at 11:30 on a weekday and no line so could order quickly and get to eating. I tried the yummy crab, scallop, and shrimp poke in a creamy/mayo-based sauce. Tamashiro is actually a functioning fish and grocery market, and no place to sit so ate in the car. Given that I parked near the garbage bins and pedestrians were watching me eat, the ambiance wasn't great, so I couldn't quite give 5 stars. Would come back for fresh fish as well as to try other pokes.

Yelp
Came here to get some sashimi. Good quality fish. Different grades of tuna and got king salmon from NZ too but I had to skin it and pick some small bones out. Price was OK, not cheap but not ridiculously expensive. The tuna belly was $42 per lb. Their octopus was good. There were 2 kinds. The more expensive one was supposed to be more tender. Their crab shrimp scallop poke was to die for. I'd totally come back just for that alone. It's a small market with a small parking lot but I was lucky to find parking. Staff were friendly enough. Depends on who's serving you. One guy seemed more easygoing and was willing to do more with the fish than another.

Yelp
This used to be my go to poke spot even though it's quite a bit off the regular path, but not sure why I felt it fell short this time... I got the shoyu limu ahi and ginger Kajiki which are usually my favorites. The ahi was spicier than expected and the tuna just didn't feel like the quality I was expecting. The Kajiki was also spicier than expected and less gingery than I had hoped for. Maybe it was an off day, I'd try again next time!

Yelp
Fresh poke and fish. Sometimes the size of the poke depends on the fish type. A classic poke bowl comes with rice, your choice of poke, and some pickled ginger. Hubby and I like the surf clam but they haven't had it in a while. Shucks. Picked up some spicy ahi poke and the other clam salad instead. They have a limited number of veggies and snacks. Limited parking in front of Tamashiro. You may park for less than 30 minutes at the church across the street if you're shopping at Tamashiro. Park within your lines and cross the street safely. Happy eating. SYOY!

Yelp
My first stop right after landing in Hawaii was this market to get some fresh poke because I saw on a blog online that this place had some of the freshest and best poke. When we turned into the parking lot, my bf and I looked at each other with raised eyebrows because no way such a small market sells good poke. There wasn't even a line when we went too so we were very skeptical. Even though we were pretty hungry, we decided to order 1 bowl to share just in case it wasn't good. Boy were we surprised after taking a bite. We devoured the bowl so quickly that my bf had to go back in to order 2 more bowls. Only bad thing about this place is lack of seating since it is a market. I will definitely come back again the next time I come to Oahu.

Yelp
Went early this AM in hope of finding fresh urchin but it didn't come in ( comes from San Diego). My friend and I decided to order our poke bowls for lunch. So let me tell you a couple reasons they get all five stars: 1) the guys are so helpful and greeted us with smiles! 2) they do not overfill your bowl with rice ( see in the picture) and all the extras was just perfect ! I'm talking about presentation -green onions, seaweed, pickled ginger -wow' just over the top! I'm eating my bowl and it is sooo yummy and for $12.95 can't beat that price! I will be back !!

Yelp
You won't see a picture-perfect poke bowl, not IG-worthy. Tamashiro Market offers a taste of poke in its purest, most authentic form. Beyond the familiar ahi, a diverse array of other fishes. Here, the focus is on the fish - not fancy toppings. Imagine glistening cubes of ahi, aku, or kajiki. It's a journey back in time, a taste of Hawaii's history in every bite that brings back many childhood memories of growing up in Kalihi. Surprisingly affordable price.

Yelp
Best Poke of my life! Fresh meats and tender cuts. 10/10 but let's agree to gatekeep from the hipsters

Yelp

Yelp
I always get their spicy ahi bowl. not as spicy which i like & the ginger & taegu adds flavor to the bowl

Yelp
Very small market and DELICIOUS POKE! They ran out of a few poke but we were able to still try their 2020 & 2021 Poke Winners. Staff was extremely nice and food portion was good. I wish I got more poke!! We came around 130pm on a Friday there was about 5 people ahead of us.

Yelp
In a discussion of where to purchase fresh poke, we settled on Tamashiro Market. It's a grocery store with a large seafood counter located in a grittier neighborhood about a mile away from Chinatown on N King St. The initial market was opened in the early 1940s on the Big Island. After being damaged by a tsunami, the business was relocated from Hilo to this current address in Oahu. There was a small lot with several parking spaces in front of the building. We visited on a weekday morning when there were few customers. A vast selection of live and fresh seafood was available, both locally and flown in from around the world. Lots of fish cuts were on display in the chilled display cases at the seafood counter. I wish I would have taken the time to ask for some taste samples. The different poke styles ranged in price from $18 to $30 per pound which seemed pricey for the higher end. My friend was more familiar with this place so he purchased a half pound of the ahi (yellowfin tuna) limu for us. The ahi was cut into small pieces and then mixed with a simple preparation of salt, sesame oil, and seaweed strips. It was a fresh and basic flavor profile for raw fish. At a future visit, I would consider something with more spiciness and maybe a gamier species like aku (skipjack tuna).

Yelp
Local poke in Kalihi, Honolulu, Hawaii... When the search for poke (raw fish) began, Ryan M. suggested Tamashiro Market. I was thinking, "Nah". However, Ryan is correct. Tamashiro's has authentic poke... the kind with inamona and ogo... Without mayonnaise!!! Haha! Tamashiro Market is an old school establishment. Before poke bowls became popular, Tamashiro's was where our parents would get poke! Haha! Located on the corner of King Street and Palama Street, Tamashiro Market is the pink building with a gigantic red crab on the top! It's in a sketchy neighborhood, so, I drove my friend from Northern California here. I told her to not catch the bus to Tamashiro Market; don't walk alone; and don't go after the sun goes down! LOL! There's a small free parking lot. Enter from Palama Street and exit to King Street. Inside, it's a basic grocery store with air conditioning, cement floors (wet in some places), and a fishy smell. Live lobsters and crabs, whole fish, fish fillets ready to make sashimi and poke, fresh produce, baked goods, cooking ingredients, tofu, and other items are available. In the back, the poke selection is in the display case. The gal behind the case was so nice to my friend (Maybe because my friend was wearing a lei - signifying that she's a tourist)! My friend was given so many samples of poke - the Hawaiian style with ogo and inamona, ginger poke, crab poke, spicy poke, ahi vs. aku poke, etc. Wow! That's really the Aloha Spirit! We ended up getting several varieties of poke. I enjoyed mine at home and she had hers in her hotel room! Thanks to Tamashiro Market for a unique experience... And to Ryan M. of Yelp San Diego for the suggestion! Note: Hawaiian style poke had a slight kick to it - must be from the chili pepper water?

Yelp
I can't believe I forgot about Tamashiro's! I was in the area and was craving a poke bowl and my friends and I just happened upon this place again. The fish counter for poke bowls is located all the way in the back. As soon as you walk in and make a left, you just go all the way down, you'll hit the counter. I got the spicy ahi bowl and a side of the real kine poke since poke bowls are only one choice. I'm so glad I got a side of the real line poke because it had scallop, crab, and shrimp. It was SO good. I highly recommend getting a side of that, you can't go wrong! The spicy ahi bowl was super fresh and their spicy ahi sauce was good, had a good amount of spice too. I liked that they add a side of ginger and taegu too. For a $12.95 poke bowl, you can't go wrong!
google avatar

Yelp
I ordered Poke bowl today, and it was $13.56 (including tax). Fresh and tasty!! - They let you choose the type of rice (regular rice or sushi rice that has a bit of vinegar and sugar inside). - My bowl came with a bit of pickled ginger (gari) and marinated squid. Not sure if it's always the same. - No matter which poke you choose, the price is the same - They let you try some samples before you decide the one that you want on your bowl - It might not be enough for those of you who want to have a big lunch
google avatar

Lauren B.

Yelp
Easily the best poke I've had so far!! The spicy ahi poke was so fresh and the sauce had amazing flavor! Each poke bowl is paired with taegu, pickled ginger, and nori. I opted for the sushi rice which was the perfect accompaniment. I still think about the poke here and can't wait to go back for more!
google avatar

Marianette K.

Yelp
Best poke and price period! My fave store to get my raw onos going. Limu kohu, opihi, tako, raw crab and poke that's melts in your mouth. Don't forget the fresh poi.

Yelp
I used to think the world of Tamashiro market, but today it changed for me. I remember going here for the first time as a kid in the 60's, so you know I am a kupuna. I loved Tamashiro market and remember the summers in the 70's where I can afford a lb. of poke for $2 instead of half a pound for the same price during non peak seasons. I remember king clam poke for $2.99/lb., (now it's call geoduck and priced upward of $60/lb. with the shell and innards), which really shows my age. Today (7/7/23) my wife and I stopped by to buy some poke and after getting some we pulled a number to purchase some fish filets. There was only one person servicing the customer and someone else behind the counter doing something else. In comes this young male customer and he doesn't pull a number. Instead he calls the other person by name and asks for shrimp for bait. The guy stops what he is doing and services this one customer which really pissed me off. And, to top it off, after he finishes with the bait order he ignores us and goes back to his unfinished business doing whatever he was doin before this guy called him by name. And, to top it off, the fish cleaner servicing the customers seemed to work very slowly so it looks a long time to get to me and I was next in line. The most disappointing thing is that Tamashiro Market is a local style market that has serviced the locals for generations. We were, and still are, the bulk of their business and treatment like this is very disappointing, more so because we want to support local. I visit Tamashiro Market about once a week and I feel that their prices could be lower, but the customer service really needs to improve. There are a lot of poke bowl businesses popping up that are inviting because they really want to serve you.

Yelp
Great selection of fish ranging from sashimi grade toro to whole local caught parrot fish and everything in between. I was not a fan of the poke here. The fish was fresh but the oil they used made the large strips a little slimy. The furikake is a little different from the poke I'm used to. No sesame seeds, sugar or salt. Just small strips of nori. I also tried the sailfish ginger poke which had a crunchy texture. The ginger masked any taste of the fish. Marlon poke is also available. Ask for a sample to determine which you may like. For a small market it has an impressive selection of Asian vegetables to make most Japanese, Thai and Chinese dishes. Prices are moderate and parking is available in front for free.
google avatar

Camille K.

Yelp
Fresh fresh fish, farmers fresh veg & best selection of poke. Dry Aku, crab, ( Nicely seasoned) inanamona too, so you can make your own poke if you like it that way. It's fresh. NEVER disappoints
google avatar

Elle K.

Yelp
Fish not as reliably fresh and handling practices/sanitation behind the fish counter not as clean as back in the day but still a go-to old school fish market.
google avatar

Seka T.

Yelp
Im sure a lot of people have their own stories growing up around Tamashiro Market. I remember coming here with my family after church on Sundays all the time. We love their poke but we always come for their fresh fish. Taro and Green bananas was a must for a Sunday feast, and Tamashiro has it all.
google avatar

Nicole P.

Yelp
This is hands down the best poke I've ever had. We went to the Honolulu fish auction tour where we were recommend Tamashiro Market by our tour guide to taste some of the fish we were learning about on the tour. We had the blue marlin poke and onion ahi from their recommendation which were both amazing! I never had poke so fresh and flavorful with marinade. We were even given samples to try before purchase. It is a market so there's no where to eat there but absolutely worth a visit to take to go!

Yelp
As Hari Kojima would say...........eh' you come to Tamashiro Market for da "Goodest & Freshest Fish!!!". Who is Hari Kojima? If ya wanna know a little about Hari Kojima & Tamashiro Market, check out these three links - https://www.staradvertiser.com/2011/06/09/hawaii-news/lets-go-fishing-host-was-a-household-name/ https://midweekkauai.com/lifestyle/currents/remembering-a-hawaii-tv-icon/ http://www.hawaiigoesfishing.com/about_hgf.html So I was driving in the Palama neighborhood yesterday afternoon, as I was headed to my favorite plate lunch joint (Richie's Drive Inn) when I happened to pass by Tamashiro Market and saw that there was an open parking stall. I nixed the idea of Richie's, and pulled into the Tamashiro Market parking lot for a poke bowl!!! Ummmmmmmmmm. Honestly, I haven't been to Tamashiro in years, but I remembered as a little kid, my parents would come here a lot to buy fresh fish for my grandma. Plus, since my uncle/auntie's house was just around the corner from Tamashiro Market, it was pretty easy access for us to go to Tamashiro's. Upon walking into the market, there was a line in the back of the market for their poke. After getting to the ordering counter, I noticed a sign that said - "Shoyu Chicken", but I had to refrain from that idea, after all...........I am in a fish market! When it was my turn to order, I asked the friend auntie if I could get a poke bowl? Unfortunately for me, Tamashiro's had run out of rice, so I decided to just get a 1/2 pound of the Spicy Ahi Poke to take home so I could add my own rice to make my own poke bowl. What can I say about the poke? One of the Goodest I ever tasted! Nice spicy marinade, and the fish was really fresh!!! The had a pretty large selection of poke, but I tend to stick with my favorites, and the Spicy Ahi is normally on top of my list! I guess the word on Tamashiro Market is out, as I saw a lot of tourist inside of the market, besides the locals. Looking for fresh fish???? Give Tamashiro's a try, and Uncle Hari will be really happy as he watches you from above!

Yelp
I love Taegu and this is one of the best I have ever had in my life. Scallop poke was so nice and fresh as well as the octopus. We ordered a quarter pound of each and paid $27. Unbeatable!

Yelp
Socks blown off...if I was wearing any! Absolutely, hands down THE BEST fresh fish on island! NOTE: longer holiday hours, poke line starts in produce area,& for heavens sake, take a number at the fresh fish counter. You want, they got. We left with 4# red snapper, 4# tiger shrimp, mussels, clams, 1# spicy ahi poke,1# limu poke, Okinawan sweet potatoes, lemons, kambucha squash. Park at the church lot across the street.
google avatar

Mari T.

Yelp
I used to come here when I did Kamehameha travelling preschool at the church next door. Probably haven't come back in almost 30 years. I remember it used to seem so big and now it seems so small! Tried Jessie's hopia, Real Kine Poke (real kine crab, real kine scallops and real kine shrimp with mayo, masago, onion, and sea asparagus), and Mikey's almond cookies. I loved the hopia since it had lots of onion and was very moist. 6 pcs for $5.95 was a great price! The Mikey's cookies tasted almost like condensed milk. Very flavorful and good texture. The poke was good, but was not worth almost $30/lb. I asked for 1/4lb and got .3 lbs so it was a bit over, but almost $10 for a small container of cooked poke was a bit pricey.
google avatar

Nancy H.

Yelp
Some of the best poke on the island, hands down! Doesn't look like much from the outside, but isn't that true for all the best fish markets?? Their bowls are incredible, just a bit more exciting than the typical ones around island, since they add pickled ginger, seaweed strips, etc. Plus they offer sushi rice, which is SUPERIOR! Their spicy ahi is spicy, but so flavorful and fresh!
google avatar

CJ M.

Yelp
Just stopped by to buy the white empty styrofoam "planters" outside the store for $1. Super convenient because the parking lot is right next to the boxes. Everything in the store is well organized and fresh. I was looking for Kamiya papayas on this day but they were sold out. The staff is always friendly and helpful and efficient. Love to support local.
google avatar

Yelp
It's been years since I've been here but we made a stop to grab some on a late Thursday afternoon. Got 4 types of poke: Tako limu: tender and tasty but still not better than taniokas to me Spicy ahi- fresh and tasty Kajiki- our favorite of the four, it was really fresh and tasted really good. Will definitely be back to get more of this Ahi with creamy crab: i think I had higher expectations for this, it wasn't bad but wasn't a favorite. Staff was friendly! Will definitely come back to try their other poke!
google avatar

Toma C.

Yelp
Known for its poke. It's not close to me so I would come here often but I came to try it once and it was good not Ono good but good. People I talk to love this place for poke. I don't get it but then I am not a poke connoisseur.
google avatar

L A.

Yelp
This is the Diamond Store for every fish need you can think of. This store is the most consistent ISLAND FRESH POKI with the smoothest taste I've ever had in my life! I'm almost scared to post this because the parking situation is limited. Please be kind to the amazing staff . Be warm and respectful :) I will never purchase Poki from anywhere else on Oahu ever again! It's that good!
google avatar

Tay T.

Yelp
opihi - wasn't for me poke - ok love that they sell Ogo & inamona here for me to use to make poke.

Yelp
Soft, buttery, poke that melts it your mouth... What more could you want?! Our local friend introduced us to Tamashiros and now it's my favorite poke spot in Oahu. They have various types of poke like spicy ahi, shoyu, creamy crab, onion poke, green onion poke. I usually buy it by the pound and add a side of rice. Price ranges from ~$20-$28 per pound. They also have tons of fresh seafood, which I have yet to try but have heard it's fantastic. The surrounding area isn't the best, but they have overflow parking at the church across the street. They are currently limiting the amount of people inside, so you might have to wait a little but the line moves fast. Do yourself a favor and check this hidden gem out!
google avatar

Tin Lung C.

Yelp
I have not been to Tamashiro Market for a very long time. I'm surprised to see the produce section is half empty. I'm not sure because of the store just open or because of Covid. I purchased spicy Ahi at the poke section, and it is very fresh. They also have a variety of Ahi from regular grade to toro grade. Tamashiro is kind of an icon store inHonolulu. They also have parking right in front of the store and additional parking across the street by the church.

Yelp
We've been coming to Tamashiro's since the early 80's. It was always a family must stop to place when visiting relatives on O'ahu. Though they have the main staples of a simple poke, I find there are so many other places that have a wider variety and better quality of fish. Not sure if it was an off-day that we went, but selection didn't seem fresh. The oyster sauce poke was good out of all what we ordered.

Yelp
Old time favorite located in Kalihi they have parking in front of the market and also additional parking across the street at the church. The produce items are pretty sad looking better to go to the framers market or super market price are same or lower. They are a fresh seafood market so don't expect much for why the produce looks like they do. The poke counter has a wide variety of different types and styles of poke to choose from. The fresh seafood counter has also a wide variety to choose from, which is very good and they even clean the fish for you.

Yelp
This market is quite small, but has a diverse variety of fish and shell fish: some live, mostly dead but fresh... I wish I could restate that sentence in a less gory way... As soon as you enter the market, it smells of a fish market. I like the smell ... as long as I don't have to wear it. (I feel the same way about Asian food, especially Korean food; it is tasty, but I end up wearing the smell all day without realizing that I carry the garlic and BBQ meat smell with me.) I got spicy ahi and limu ahi poke. The limu ahi had lingering fish smell, and perhaps it wasn't as fresh. Spicy poke was delicious. Although I like the overall vibe and the staff's friendliness, I'm not sold on poke. Next time I'll ask for a sample before commiting to a poke. I did buy a cute t-shirt so that I can wear it when I'm in mainland. I'll come back soon to try something else.

Yelp
Thanks to Taste the Nation, I was instantly intrigued by Tamashiro Market's massive variety of poke and immediately added it to my bookmarks. We came here on our last day in Honolulu, and although A) they didn't have the king clam poke, and B) they'd run out of their award-winning ahi poke in creamy crab sauce, I wasn't disappointed by the quality of the poke I did end up trying. My spicy ahi poke was good, and I love that the poke bowls come with really tasty taegu. But the biggest highlight by far was the cooked scallop with sea asparagus poke that was perfectly marinated and absolutely delicious. I also tried the surf clam poke, but that one wasn't for me; the surf clam had some squishy gelatin-like parts that I wasn't really digging. Note: The marketplace doesn't have any seating, so you'll have to get your poke to go and find somewhere else to eat it. We ended up camping out at a nearby Jollibee. *hides face in shame* (Although I did order some spaghetti for the flight home!)
