Pho, vermicelli & other traditional Vietnamese dishes served in an unassuming space.
"The Vietnamese spot Tan My, off of Research Blvd, is probably best known for their pho, and it’s definitely our favorite place to get a bowl of bún bò Huế. The fiery orange-red broth is bright, rich, and spicy—it’s exactly what we crave when the temps cool off and it becomes sweater weather (sometimes we just crank up the AC and pretend). "There’s a pretty extensive list of Vietnamese specialties at Tan My near 183 and Ohlen Road, and we’d put just about all of them into the top tiers of their respective categories here in Austin. But right at the top of them all is the central Vietnamese specialty, bún bò Huế, that pairs a bright and fiery orange broth with thick, chewy rice noodles, fresh herbs, a few slices of beef, and savory cubes of congealed pork blood. It’s spicy, with a strong lemongrass flavor that we think about as soon as the temperature drops below 80°—though that certainly hasn’t stopped us from ordering it in triple-digit temps. What to order: Bún bò Huế " - nicolai mccrary, raphael brion
"The North Austin restaurant is all about Vietnamese noodle soups, like pho and hu tieu mi (clear noodle soup with chicken broth). There is indoor dine-in services." - Nadia Chaudhury
"I love Chinese/Vietnamese food, so I love to eat at Tan My. It’s a hidden gem that has the best pho and rice plates." - Nadia Chaudhury
"About once a week, after a big night out we wake up with an insatiable craving for noodle soup. And when that moment hits, the place we go to most often is Tan My. They’re located in a pretty nondescript small strip mall near Ohlen and 183, in a spot we wish was harder to find. Because it gets busy. Show up for lunch on a Saturday and you’ll probably have to circle around a few times to find a parking spot, before adding your name to a long list to get seated at semi-communal tables. photo credit: Holly Dirks There’s a pretty extensive list of Vietnamese specialties, with everything from spring rolls to stir-fried noodles, but noodle soups are what you should get here. The beef pho is among the best in town—and probably our recommendation for your first visit. But we usually find ourselves coming in for a bowl of bún bò Huế, with a fiery orange-red broth that’s bright, rich, and spicy, or the house special Hủ tíu, with a slightly sweeter pork bone broth. Whether you find yourself searching for broth on a rainy day, or wake up with an insatiable craving for noodle soup after a late night, Tan My is where you should probably be heading—you might even see us there in the back. photo credit: Holly Dirks" - Nicolai McCrary
