Where to Eat and Drink on H Street

"Owner-chef Rolando Frias pulls from his time living in Mexico City to create the menu at Taqueria Al Lado, which has another location in Adams Morgan. While the tacos are undoubtedly the main draw here, the fresh guacamole, ceviche and elote are also not to be missed. Consider topping off a round of tacos with a refreshingly sweet horchata that doubles as dessert." - Mekita Rivas

A Tiny Taqueria Calls Dibs on Horace and Dickie’s Former Northeast Digs - Eater DC

"The pint-sized box that housed D.C. fried fish institution Horace and Dickie’s for three decades will revive service next spring as a late-night Mexican street food stand called Taqueria Al Lado II. Chef Rolando Frias tells Eater the goal is to open just off H Street NE (809 12th Street NE) in the beginning of March, just a year after he opened the original Taqueria Al Lado in Adams Morgan. His focused, one-page menu lets patrons choose a taco, quesadilla, huarache, or salad ($4, $8, $8, and $12, respectively), and a protein from a list that includes al pastor, lengua, chicken tinga, vegan barbacoa, tempura-battered cod, and more. Taqueria Al Lado II will be smaller than the first, with just eight seats inside plus a 12-seat patio out front. Carryout and delivery will also be a big part of the business." - Tierney Plumb

Over experience was okay … the serve seemed not too familiar with the menu and when asked for substitutions with chips/ pico .. she said only guacamole or queso ! However in the end we go what we wanted by the manager ! The drinks were nice and the tacos are very flavorful!

My wife said that this place has been on her list for some time.. if you are a DC native you will know that this is the old location for horace and dickies. Anyway this new establishment added an exterior awning so you'll be able to have seating options which weren't available with the previous tenant. We went on a relatively cold day but they do have heating lamps the only issue is that they time out and so you have to keep asking them to come back and turn it on. The food came out quickly very fresh prices are reasonable portions are substantial. Plan to come back and try a quesadilla as well as some more tacos they have a wide range of meat/vegetarian options. If you're in the area stop by. I would definitely recommend it.

Taqueria Al Lado does an Ecuadorian food pop up on Sundays. I ordered the encebollado mixto. The flavors hit the spot, and warmed me up on this cold Sunday.

This old Horace and Dickie's location is now home to one of the best deals in the neighborhood. Actual authentic (elevated of course) Mexican tacos, quesadillas, and huaraches. Alongside a full tequila selection that can be added to any of the cocktails, and of course frozen, fruity margaritas, this place really has it all. A fair amount of outdoor seating with a few bar seats makes this a perfect nice-weather dining experience in the area. A welcome reprieve from the $25 entrees along H street that leave you still hungry. This place is the real deal.

If I could zero stars I WOULD. WE DROVE 4 HOURS, AND WERE HUNGRY. We found this spot due to its reviews but it was A LIE. First, it’s not even a Mexican spot, you have to ask for this special menu. Which is not the main issue. You walking in.. and no one welcomes you. You have to the call the server - they don't come to you. My table ordered and first few plates came. They missed two plates. Never checked on us & our other friends already finished. When I said something again it passed a whole hour and still no food. We spoke to someone that this is not right. We asked if they could do something about it because everyone ate yet our food never came. They said well its not our fault ( as in the restaurant) but they skipped the order and forgot so wait till they make it???? I said, okay will we be getting a discount. They said no we wont. Even though it was their fault. I felt very disrespected at the fact they knew it was their fault and did not want to do anything about it. We left hungry.

Stoped by after a long day of sightseeing, we were thankful they were open late! The service was great and food came out quickly. We got chips, tacos, and a quesadillas. It was all very good. Definitely recommend! Four stars because we got the birria on both a taco and the quesadilla and it was on the dryer side with not enough broth to dip in.

Watch out if it’s a warm day, the greenhouse effect is real in there. It was about 70 outside when we went and felt like it was about 90 inside. I ordered their three most popular tacos per their menu (Chicken Tinga, Queso Birria & Al Pastor) and found two of them to be pretty salty without much flavor behind that. The Al Pastor was very tasty, but also the smallest of the three, so I’m not sure if it would have been filling enough if I just ordered 3 of those.

So glad we tried this place out! Margs are $7 and food is only about $15 each -- very cheap for DC. Very good brisket and chorizo, great serving sizes too! Only downside was that there was just one server and he was running around trying to keep up all night. Will definitely return!
