Essential Guide to Visiting Tulum, Mexico

The 24 Best Restaurants in Tulum, Mexico | Eater

"This trendy street stand became Tulum’s destination taqueria and a viral sensation during chef Rene Redzepi’s residency at Noma Mexico in 2017, when visiting foodies from the U.S. spilled over into Taqueria Honorio, filling Instagram with mouthwatering posts of Yucatán-style tortas de lechón (suckling pig), tacos de cochinita pibil (roasted marinated pork), and relleno negro de pavo (marinated turkey). These dishes offer a masterclass in recaudos of Maya cuisine: the acidic recaudo rojo on the cochinita pibil, the charred and smoky recaudo negro for the relleno negro, and the all-purpose spice blend, or recaudo blanco, that scents the slow roasted suckling pig. Join the crowd at this trendy street food stand and snack on the essential flavors and colors of the Yucatán." - Bill Esparza

Take a long cold shower before you go to this restaurant. Go in shorts, sandals and a muscle shirt. Very hot in this place but the fans do help some... Food is great. Very tasty. Good prices. Might be the best place in town. Even tourist go to this restaurant. Chilaquiles are deli deli!! Had to tell the lady that sits the people down that there were unoccupied tables because it seemed like she didn't see them. No biggie though.

Google
When going on our tour, we were welcomed into this place with open arms. Me and my family, were seated down immediately and we got our food very quickly. The workers here also make the place more enjoyable, they were all very nice and pleasant to be around ☺️. Our food was very good and not very expensive. Definitely a must come if you want to eat delicious food!

Google
Must try local place. The food is tasty and inexpensive. We had the chilaquiles with chicken and eggs and a latte and it was scrumptious. We also got super lucky and got seated right away, but plan on waiting around 15-20 minutes. Definitely a must try!

Google
Taqueria Honorio in Tulum is an absolute must-visit for anyone craving authentic Mexican cuisine! The food is simply outstanding, with every taco packed with vibrant, fresh flavors that showcase the best of local ingredients. From the perfectly seasoned meats to the handmade tortillas, every bite is a delight. The prices are incredibly reasonable, offering exceptional value for such high-quality dishes, making it a great spot for both budget travelers and foodies alike. The service is equally impressive-warm, friendly, and attentive, creating a welcoming atmosphere that enhances the entire dining experience. Whether you're a local or just passing through Tulum, Taqueria Honorio is the place to go for a memorable meal that hits all the right notes. Highly recommend!

Google
Very good taqueria, quite authentic even if it’s now full of tourists. Locals still come here for lunch, which is a good sign of the taco quality! The atmosphere is very loud, but it’s part of the charm of the place.

Google
Place is only open until lunch. It was filled with people when I visited but there is a lot of seating. Great Tacos with the choice of having bread extra grilled/fried. More selection than the average taco spot. Had surprisingly good lattes!

Google
A great little tacqueria with excellent tacos. We’d definitely be back. Reasonable prices and great food. I would stick to arrachera and pork tacos. The tacos with eggs, chicken, or lettuce weren’t our favorites. Tacos de conchinita pibil would be better as a torta for sure.

Google
We must have gone on an off day. we were really excited to try based off the reviews but we're unfortunately very disappointed. Got the steak and "breaded" chicken tacos and received what seemed to be (or at least had the same texture and taste of) frozen meat. Service was fast though and prices were good.

Yelp
Hands down the best chilaquiles I've ever had, and maybe my favorite thing I ate on my vacation. I had the chicken + egg chilaquiles with red and green sauce mixed, which my server recommended. Heard about this place from a friend, and I'm here to spread the good news. Just go! Tips : Get there before 10am or expect a line. Wear something lightweight, no AC! They do have espresso here, but it's not the main show

Yelp
This place is a must when visiting Tulum. Authentic, delicious , affordable tacos. Only negative thing I can say is that it's distracting to have street vendors approach the table while eating.

Yelp
Bomb!!! Our wonderful travel guide Ruben from local travel mexico brought us here(wonderful guide and company!) . He ordered us two different pork dishes and they were fantastic. Home made tortillas with different salsas. I almost took the tortillas home with me they were so good. It was a Mexican Mayan mix dishes and it was fantastic. Hole in the wall place but Dang good!

Yelp
We had a great lunch here. You can tell it's gotten popular because the other restaurants on the block were pretty empty and this place had a line. Our fam remembered enjoying it years ago when it was more of a tent and turns out it's just as delicious. We ordered pork and steak tacos, a torta, a quesadilla, horchata, pineapple frescas, and flan. All were stellar! The horchata was perfect, not too sweet. Definitely recommend.
google avatar

Yelp
Good no frills taco spot. They didn't gave a lot on their menu when we got there so unfortunately didn't try much. But what we had was good.

Yelp
Alright now yall, this placed was highly recommended to me by locals and peers. This is my second time visiting Tulum! I ordered two cochinita pibil tacos (pork shoulder), arrachera (skirt steak), and bistec (shredded beef). First off, the service here is genuinely on point! You are greeted, seated, and your order is taken. It is vibrant and busy inside, but they still strive to provide each patron with a phenomenal experience. This was evident, as I watched the way they navigated each table making sure that the needs of all patrons were met. My tacos came out promptly, and I was also provided with salsas and onions, yummy! I doused the tacos with the toppings! When I took the first bite of the cochinita pibil tacos, wow!!! Okay, it was like pure love and harmony! These tacos took my taste buds on an adventure. An adventure to flavor-town! Let me get onto the rest of the tacos, otherwise i'll be reflecting all day! The arrachera was so hearty and tasty, it had me feeling grounded and also grateful for the vibrant flavors. The bistec gave me Northern Mexican vibes, and made me appreciate good food with the vibrant seasonings and abundant flavor! This experience was delicious and peaceful. The staff is phenomenal, the food is phenomenal, thank you Taqueria Honorario! Yall have no idea the level of magic that you are cooking up!

Yelp
My family and I recently visited Taqueria Honorio for lunch. It was recommended by almost everyone we talked to about our trip to Tulum. The place was bigger than I expected; I was imagining a small shack selling the best tacos. We arrived around 1 pm, and the place was not crowded. We were seated in the back, and the server took our orders immediately. We ordered two tacos each of cochinita pibil, lechón, milanesa de pollo, and poc-chuc. The tacos were good, but I was not impressed. My kids ordered three more tacos de cochinita pibil, and I ordered another lechón. The food was good but not amazing. The service was quick, and I am glad we did not have to wait in line to get in.

Yelp
From an outsider, this seems to be one of Tulum's most beloved taco spots by tourists and locals alike. Whether you are getting takeout or sitting in to eat, the folks here are friendly, efficient, and work really quickly. It's a really chill taco spot, but they close really early each day (sometime between 1-3pm I believe). But I have no problems eating any type of tacos early in the morning for breakfast lol. I've been told and read from multiple sources that this place has the best cochinita pibil and lechon. Also, the cochinita pibil is very regional to this area so I knew that I had to hit this place up before leaving Tulum. You can order their food in taco or torta form. I came here at 7:30 in the morning on the day I was leaving and wanted tacos. I ordered some cochinita pibil tacos and a relleno negro de pavo taco with a horchata to wash it down. The tacos came out quickly with some accoutrements including salsas on the side. Oh my gosh, the taco meat was so juicy and flavorful. This was such a perfect way to end my trip here in terms of food. They were so good that I ended up ordering a lechon taco as well that came with a little chicharron on top. I had to stop myself at four total. When I got there, there was a short line outside, waiting for takeout. But there was plenty of seating inside. I would imagine this place gets really busy as it gets later in the morning.

Yelp
We came here after diving (this is right around the corner from KOOX diving) and it seems to be really the best spot to get tacos around here especially for their cohinita pibil tacos (sort of like tender baby pork) seems like locals and tourists both love it as lines are out the door. It was easy to find parking across the street and the place was very simple and easy to find as you'll see their name written across the front and inside there's a few pigs to reference. It's packed to the brim and service was super fast and easy. Super casual and you can be in and out if you want and they accept take out at the door if you just need to eat immediately. This place has no air conditioner for reference but has one of the best guac I've ever had which started the meal off and whereas I can't find Diet Mexican Coke almost anywhere in Mexico - this place has the diet Mexican Coke!!!!! The tacos itself were mind blowing especially if you're hungry I think I was going to see God when I ate these tacos because I was starving from my dive trips. I went silent because they're so good. The pork is just so soft and so tender it literally melts in your mouth and there's nothing I can do to forget this experience. I wish I got more is all. My partner got their chicken which was her favorite along with the cochinita pibil and the beef ones. So if you're a chicken fan you'll be happy here as well.

Yelp
This place is decent size. No reservations so first come first serve. It's very clean and staff speak very good English. Regardless of how long the lines are they move pretty quickly. Let's talk about the food. Delicious!! Eating here felt like going to a Mexican friends house and having their mom cook for you. Chiqualies with eggs was so yummy perfect amount of sauce and it wasn't soggy. The house made sauce was so good. Chicken and pork tacos were good as well. Very flavorful. We had the sandwiches as well and the bread on its own is something I could eat all day. Very clean restaurant given how busy they are. Highly recommend don't be too worried of the long lines they move very quickly.

Yelp
Highly recommend coming here if you like tacos. Came with a party of 8 in the middle of the weekday around 12pm and there wasn't a wait for a table, but it was busy with a steady stream of people. Tacos are personal sized. Recommend sampling all the meat ones. The chips and guacamole was delish too. The watermelon juice was really refreshing as well (literally puréed watermelon). Service is fast and friendly. It says on the outside of the restaurant they take card, but when we went it was cash only. Restaurant is located in a more local area of town.

M M.

Yelp
All the other reviews cover it but this place is dynamite. A quick taxi ride from Ruins this place is a must stop. Enjoyed Pibil meal which Was a ton of food. Extremely friendly service and they do accept credit card.
google avatar

Coty M.

Yelp
Fast service, the cochinita was gluten free and delicious, they have different flavors aguas frescas. The place is always busy, there's no AC but they have good fans going on. Try it !
google avatar

Yelp
Its absolutely the place to visit in Tulum. If you want to try authentic tacos its a place to go. They offer simple manu of Tocas, meat dish or tortas. You can also get a nice cold bottle of cucember with lime drink or Horchata. Whenever we visit Tulum we always stop by the get their delicious Tacos. They serve them with cabbage/cilantro/onion slasa and two pepper salsas which one is mild and the second is on the hot side. Our favorite tacos were the ones with Lechon which is rosted suckling pig. I wish they could offer some beer options one day :)
google avatar

Kim P.

Yelp
Food was 4/5, service, 5/5, ambience 5/5 Food came out quick! I wasn't a fan of the salpicón de res taco, it was dry to me, but everything else was good though. I got a limonade with sparkling mineral water, it's more on the tart side but that's how I like it. They bring out chips and salsa, lime and a cabbage slaw (I think) for the tacos. The red sauce was super spicy- a little goes a long way. It was constantly busy, service and food was good, quick and easy, a little hot but they had large fans blowing. Delicious lunch overall!
google avatar

Paolo M.

Yelp
Always a go-to in Tulum. Popularized by the Netflix series The Taco Chronicles. This place never disappoints. I recommend trying at least 1 of each taco to see what you like best, but they ALL are delicious. Line ups can be long and they close by 2-3pm, so keep that in mind. Worth it!
google avatar

Eddie P.

Yelp
No frill, top 3 tacos in Tulum. Popular with the locals and tourists, this place can get really busy. The service is extremely quick and the food is delicious. It's a bit hot inside despite the latest upgrades to the exterior. Make sure you order their famous conchinita pibil, a Mayan specialty where pork is slow cooked underground with spices until it becomes super moist and tender. The lechon is also a favorite, where they top the conchinita pibil with crispy pork rinds. There are plenty of toppings and the price is reasonable. They take cash only, but have a foreign currency booth within - though the exchange rates are obviously not great.
google avatar

Prasath S.

Yelp
If you're looking for authentic food from this region, this maybe your only bet before you hit the hotel zone. They do the best Cochinita Pibil in the region (Don Beto used to be the king but not anymore). They also do a nice and moist lechon dish. If I were you I would do the plates instead of the tacos as you will get more meat and a full basket of tortillas to make your own vs having individual tacos served to you. They were unfortunately already sold out on the famous black turkey tacos so that was bummer even though it was only 1pm. The shredded beef taco was bland and boring so skip that and focus on the 3 types of pork tacos they serve and you'll be fine. Prices are very fair and tourist friendly.
google avatar

Frankee F.

Yelp
Not a fancy restaurant at all. You come here to eat! Great prices, Chilaquiles on point! Friendly service. I rather spend my money here than in the fancy resorts. Give it a shot.
google avatar

Javi S.

Yelp
Some of the best tacos in Tulum!!! Food and service was excellent! Ambiance feels like you're in a nice outdoor cafeteria. Unos de los mejores Tacos en Tulum!
google avatar

Diana N.

Yelp
This place was super hyped up so we were excited to try it. The early hours made it difficult, but I made time before my flight to stop by. I got their popular lechon taco which came with a Chicharon on top, their steak taco, and their Quesadilla. The lechon was very porky and fatty which I wasn't a fan of, but it had good flavor. The pork rind on top was a bit too hard, but I managed. The quesadilla was very lackluster because the cheese was very limp and not melted. Very bland quesadillas. The saving grace here was the carne asada which had excellent charred flavor. I should of ordered 3 more of these haha While they have a good reputation, I thought they were just above average, in my opinion. I much rather have an Al Pastor from Antojitos La Chiapaneca!
google avatar

Debbie A.

Yelp
Great taco spot with friendly service. It was my friend's bro's birthday and they came out with a tres leche cake that was absolutely delicious. The spot seems to be tourist heavy but the food looks authentic as it could be for the area.
google avatar

Val T.

Yelp
This is a must when visiting tulum. The cochinita pibil quesadilla is my absolute favorite. I also went a second time for the chilaquiles and was happy with everything I ordered. It's a taqueria with no frills but all the love is in the food. Great prices and quick service, so don't be discouraged by the long line. There is a lot of seating inside and the waiters are quick.
google avatar

Victor H.

Yelp
Came here for tacos and they were amazing, delicious, and affordable. One caveat was that they didnt accept credit, only cash allowed. Definitely recommend this place as both foreigners and locals come here for eating in
google avatar

Dianna H.

Yelp
Good spot for some cheap eats in Tulum! We came by Saturday for an early lunch around 11 am and it was popping! They have plenty of tables and most of them were full. It's a no-frills spot where people come to get food and leave. I appreciated that they have plenty of fans placed everywhere so it felt a bit cooler. The menu is straightforward and includes tacos, tortas, quesadillas, and some entrees. I wasn't too hungry so I just ordered two tacos, the cochinita pibil and lechon. All tacos are only 26 pesos, which is such a steal! My tacos were both good. I personally liked the lechon more than the cochinita pibil. My friend tried both a veggie torta and quesadilla. The quesadilla was interesting as it's very different from what you'd get in he US. He also really enjoyed his food. We left with our wallets 200 pesos (~10 USD) lighter and with happy stomachs.
google avatar

Amy H.

Yelp
This place has some of the best suckling pig I have eaten outside of Spain. The tacos are wonderful and the price is crazy cheap. We were told of this place by a local. It a bit off the 307 but soooo worth it.
google avatar

Kendrick R.

Yelp
It was a very good experience. Very busy! However, the service was quick, and the food was authentic and tasty! I would highly recommend.
google avatar

Fernando L.

Yelp
A fantastic tacos, delicious flavor!! the best tacos of cochinita y lechón!! I little hot but in back have a corner with air acondicionado
google avatar

Thalia R.

Yelp
This is a must for breakfast/lunch. Keep in mind this place gets pretty packed and closed at 3:30 (w time change). You're going to see a lot of people all waiting at the front to either sit or pick up so you have to go to the front to find the hostess and out your name on the list. There were only 2 of us and it took about 10 min to get a table. To start we ordered the guac and juice, which come in plastic water bottles and that was great because we could take them to go. We then ordered the torta de cochinita pibil which was my favorite from the menu, and almost all tacos from the menu. The food was really good and the salsas they had on the table really complimented them.
google avatar

Akhila D.

Yelp
The chicken sandwich was phenomenal although the chicken taco was a little dry the service was phenomenal and the restaurant looked very authentic however there was a distinct smell of poop outside of the restaurant .
google avatar

Collin M.

Yelp
Great taco place that opens super early (6:30 AM!) So a great spot to get breakfast or lunch tacos. They have some fun twists like a chichiron topping for certain tacos. The breakfast one with egg was our favorite breakfast meal of the trip.
google avatar

Helen X.

Yelp
We came here early because that's what was recommended before their lunch rush and I'm glad we did. We arrived around 10:30am and was seated immediately but there were already a good amount of people dining. The one thing I did wish was that they had some beef options as well. Our whole meal was very inexpensive. I would eat here again if I came back to Tulum. Cochinita Pibil (Roasted Pork) - This one was my favorite because it had the most flavor. Poc Chuc (Grilled Pork Meat) - This was good too and my second favorite taco. Lechon (Roasted Suckling Pig) - This was not as flavorful so it was my least favorite. Probably the only one I wouldn't really recommend. It did come with a chicharron that was yummy and crunch though. Guacamole - This was delicious. Really can't go wrong with ordering this. Piña Aqua Fresca - This was nice and refreshing.
google avatar

Aminah K.

Yelp
Best place for cheap delicious tacos in Tulum! The place is casual and has lot of seating. We went pretty early around 11am and it was starting to get pretty busy. The menu is simple and had good options. The tacos were flavorful and quite filling. The tortillas were so fresh. Heads up it's cash only.
google avatar

Jolene E.

Yelp
The best tacos and food we had in Tulum. Absolutely excellent. The vibes are like a dive bar. Service is great too. We went to tell him for a honeymoon, and we only ended up going into town one day. We don't plan to go back to Tulum because it really wasn't our vibe but if we do, we will make sure to eat at this place again. This food was better than our five-star resort in Tulum.
google avatar

Mickey M.

Yelp
Hands down my fave taco spot ever! As in I would fly back to Tulum just for this. During my most recent trip there, we had this twice. Once when we first arrived and then right before we hopped on our flight back to Philly! They specialize in pork tacos and my favorite was the lechon with crispy skin. Everything was also so cheap as it's definitely considered local eats. Try the lechon taco with a Sandia drink if you're ever in Tulum!
google avatar

Lauren G.

Yelp
I've been wanting to go to this place for years! There's always a line but tables move so fast we only had to wait about 10-15 minutes. It's a very "hole in the wall" place. Many many locals frequent this place which is always a good sign in my eyes. Everyone was very nice and they work efficiently. The tacos were all good and very cheap at only 26 pesos each. The flan was amazing! Made in house daily and we took it down fast! Overall, very worth stopping in when you're in Tulum.
google avatar

Whitney W.

Yelp
Great tacos in Tulum, worth the wait! This place gets busy so be prepared to wait, but not too long. I had already had plenty of tacos in Tulum, so I opted for the cochinita pibil and lechon torta. Great choice! It was delicious and loved the meat. Their sauces were also good and they had some of my favorite guacamole while in Mexico. Would visit again!
google avatar

Tamara R.

Yelp
Great spot for tacos in tulum. You will experience authentic flavors from the marinated meat as well as the handmade tortillas. A lot of tourists come here to eat but do not let that bother you. I would recommend ordering the horchata to try as well.
google avatar

Christian R.

Yelp
Must try if you're in Tulum. Tried 5 from the menu. Did not disappoint. Add avocado and egg to top off the meal. Perfect with a cold drink.
google avatar

Charles L.

Yelp
This place is so good, we came back two days later. We tried the first four types of tacos on the menu; Cochinita pibil, lechon, poc chuc, and relleno negro. If you like tacos on the less greasy side, you'll like the relleno negro. For me personally, I'm a fan of the poc chuc. They ran out of this during my first visit. Lechon can be a bit dry if you're going late but the chiccaron that comes with it makes the taco crunchy. Next time we're back, I want to try their poc chuc sandwich.
google avatar

Rachel Z.

Yelp
Hands down our favorite taco spot in Tulum. Their tacos are Yucatan style and different from the usual al pastor, arrachera type of tacos you see more commonly in Mexico. You really can't go wrong with any of their tacos -- they all have tons of flavor and are well-portioned. I highly recommend that you try all of them since they're only 25 pesos each! Sometimes they'll sell out of a certain type of meat so it's better to come early. The staff don't really speak English but are super friendly.
google avatar

Jake B.

Yelp
These are, unequivocally, the best tacos I've ever had. The cochinita pibil tacos were truly, truly fantastic. The oven-roasted pork was also excellent. We didn't get to try the turkey ones, which I hear are very good. But the cochinita pibil was really something else. If I could eat here every week, I absolutely would.
google avatar

Louis P.

Yelp
Great tacos, great price, friendly, quick, and efficient service. There was nothing more to ask for, we ordered 9 tacos and chicharrones with pico and 2 drinks and we were out of there for 500 peso with tip. And it was the best 500 peso I spent in Tulum. Stop looking through yelp and go there.
google avatar

Amanda E.

Yelp
This was such a great spot to try some local cuisine! It was very busy (so you know it's good). We order chips and guacamole as appetizer and it was everything you'd expect. I also ordered the horchata, and while I wish it was a little more flavorful, it was still delicious. On to the tacos...they were soooo good. I ordered the beef and pulled pork (and accidentally got the suckling pig one too...more on that later). They beef was my least favorite, but still full of flavor. The pulled pork was excellent. The suckling pig was the best one I had! It was the best accidental food I've ever had lol. Two of my friends got that one and raved about it. I was skeptical because of the type of meat it was, but I figured I'd try it. It was so tender and full of amazing flavor!! If you're on the fence, try it anyway. You won't be disappointed. The ambiance was great. There were a lot of locals there as well as tourists. The only reason I'm not giving five stars is because our waiter (who was overall good), forgot to submit our order. The only reason I know that is because people who were seated way after we were got our food before us, and our waiter realized it as he was bringing them their food.
google avatar

Nilay P.

Yelp
Excellent street style tacos. Very quick and pleasant service, they speak decent English too. No ac so it's a little warm, but fans everywhere. Lots of tables so getting room shouldn't be too long - We didn't have to wait at all, but on a Monday. They run out of the flan so go early if you want dessert :-( We missed it. I'd recommend for a good, super cheap meal!
google avatar

Alex R.

Yelp
First time in tulum and looked this place up and totally worth it. Food was really good!!!...busy place says it all but super fast service. Friendly Staff definitely recommend you try this place.
google avatar

Mireya R.

Yelp
Wasn't sure if this place would live up to their hype but they definitely did! We ordered the cochinita pibil and the carne asada tacos. Both get 10/10. I only give a 4 star because we went on a Sunday at noon and there was a line to get in. After standing in line for about 20 minutes, we find out that you are supposed to write your name down to be sat. There should be a sign or at least a worker advising everyone in line about this. Id definitely go back if in Tulum again.
google avatar

Kimberly M.

Yelp
Great taco spot! I saw many comments that this place can get pretty packed. Our group got really lucky and came around 10 am on a Monday which wasn't bad at all. We tried a variety of tacos however the clear favorite of the group is the lechon! Everything here was good and you can't go wrong. I will saw though the only thing you should pass on is the dessert empanadas.
google avatar

Amy T.

Yelp
The verdict is in: best place for tacos in Tulum! Try all of them if your tummy allows it. I would skip out on the extras so that you can taste the flavor of the meat. The add-ons take away from the overall experience as the taco is only so big. This place opens early (6am) and closes early (1:30pm). Don't make the same mistake we did and come strolling in hoping to grab a late lunch or early dinner. The line will be long. Get on the waitlist as the list goes by fast. Come hungry and tip generously!
