On the Grid : Taqueria Jalisco

"Tiny, charming and delicious. All found within Taqueria Jalisco, yes, both locations. Upon entering the place—”place” being rough for Airstream turned food truck turned stationary food truck plus porch—you will notice the tiny tables and bottles on bottles of Mexican Coke. For top picks we’d go: Huarache con huevo, Fajita burrito, or Tacos Americanos. The fight for a table can be a bear, but the elbows to elbows is just social proof you made the right choice." - Whiteboard

The Best Restaurants and Bars in Chattanooga, Tennessee | Eater Nashville

"Maria and Jose Parra started out slinging tacos from a food truck throughout the streets of the Southside in 2005. Now, their chic storefront Taco Jalisco Ania is one of the swankiest taquerias to ever serve tostadas de lomo (pulled pork shoulder) and huevos rancheros for brunch. The taqueria also has the most stellar cache of mezcal." - Eater Staff

We were in town visiting from Knoxville and this was a perfect first experience. I saw this place on instagram and solely went because the inside looked so cool, but everything from the food and drink to the service was 10/10. Zachary was our server and he had the best smile and was very attentive!

Google
One of the best foods I've ever had in Chattanooga is their tacos, which were incredibly DELICIOUS, as was the carne asada ranchera, and the fresh, homemade chips with guacamole were AMAZING 100% recommend!!!

Gerrald Samraj

Google
great bartender n good drink. Good and friendly service. I would recommend a visit when in town

Veronica

Google
Such a cute place! And the food was great. We came in when they were really busy, and the waitress still treated us great. The drinks are also really good. Highly recommend!

Google
Not a traditional Mexican restaurant vibe. Server was friendly and attentive, food was good. I feel the portions were a bit small for the price, and I did not like so many menus items listed as “market price”.

Google
If I could give these place 1,000 stars I would. Amazing food. Drinks are authentic and inventive, fresh and super tasty. My new favorite place to eat in Chattanooga. Everything on the menu hits. So delicious. Go eat here! Don’t hesitate and leave them the reviews they deserve until they reach 1,000 stars! ❤️❤️

Google
All around fantastic little place! Extra clean and tidy and modern with a very relaxed vibe. It was a bit busy so we opted for 2 open seats at the bar to get in quicker and it was a great choice. The bartender was very awesome and full of personality and very good! Good crafty touch to their house cocktails and there is a stellar tequila selection if that's your thing. Service and kitchen were quick and on point. Food was well put together and clean and fresh. A return visit is definitely planned. This spot does get busy at most parts of the day and evening, but it's worth a few minutes wait if necessary.

Google
Food was delicious, service was prompt and friendly. We asked someone working at the local Walgreens where to find great tacos and she suggested this place.

Yelp
We walked in at 630 on a Tuesday evening and were seated promptly. Everyone on staff was pleasant to interact with. The food came out relatively quickly. Some of the meals were flavorful while others seemed bland. The enchiladas de mole were good with just enough heat to warm your mouth. The burrito and burrito bowls were generous in size. The Mahi tacos were just ok. The industrial look and feel to the building fit with the neighborhood.

Yelp
My friends and I were seated outside and I thought that the exterior was decorated nicely. I loved the modern design and tropical plants. The servers were great, we had multiple people check up on us to see if we were doing okay. At first I wished we sat inside but when we went to the bathroom later, the noise level was louder than I thought. I think I would've been overwhelmed since it was packed and the noise seemed to bounce off the walls, so the outdoor area was much better for us. I ordered the Huarache with asada. I liked it, the meat was flavorful and the sauce on it was delicious. Everything about it was pretty good. Honestly I was a little disappointed at the size, it was smaller than I thought. Other than that, it tasted good. I'll have to come back and try their tacos next time.

Yelp
A place I stumbled onto mainly because this is about where the street parking transitions from paid to free, I was more than happy to put the money I saved towards eating here anyway. It is a splendid open ambiance, though the disorderly bar crowd pushed me towards getting an outdoor table. I received attentive service from someone who noted and recorded by vegetarianism for the kitchen. The place has a good variety of labeled vegetarian options, and I struggled to decide, but getting their core item certainly was not a bad decision. My tacos arrived with double tortillas, which helped greatly in incorporating the side of guacamole I ordered. I split between cactus and poblano for fillings, and the palpable freshness shone through. This is a meal based on whole (if finely chopped) vegetables, and it works. More filling options were available if I'd been more hungry, but it was just right for a light meal. A canteloupe agua fresca was a nice contrast for washing things down. I tried a couple of Central American restaurants back to back, which I wouldn't normally do as I like variety. But I did not find any wrong answers here.

Yelp
Love this place! Fantastic ambiance: light and clean and modern with a vibe and a beautiful outdoor space as well! Good service. Skip the expensive cocktail and go for the fabulous $5 margaritas during happy hour. The chips and salsa are good and fresh. Pass on the mediocre street corn (off the cob) in an underwhelming ramekin. Try the mole - great depth of flavor! Everything was yummy and nice (not super cheap), and we really enjoyed our date night!

Yelp
Very friendly staff. Food was very good. Chips nice and fresh & salsa was really good. Drinks tasty. Service was prompt. My party of 4 all had something different and we all enjoyed our meal.

Yelp
Lunch here was delicious! The restaurant itself is modern and airy, and the ambiance feels quiet and calm. We enjoyed margaritas that were perfectly prepared, with crispy chips and salsa. We then ordered fajitas and the huarache, both of which were freshly made and SO good! Service was perfect. Excellent experience!

Yelp
We were only in Chattanooga for one night so we decided to try somewhere different. This restaurant is not downtown and is somewhat "off the beaten path", but it was only a couple minutes from downtown. We were quickly seated and the decor was very inviting but modern. The restaurant was very clean and appeared to be adequately staffed. Our food came out quickly and was just as described on the menu. They had a nice drink menu that included drinks you would expect to find at a Mexican restaurant however, my friend does not drink so she requested a nonalcoholic drink of the bartenders choice. She was very pleasantly surprised. The drink was very pretty and not what you would typically expect from a nonalcoholic drink. Overall we were very pleased with all aspects of the restaurant. The only downside was that there was no food offerings for kiddos so we had to order for them off the regular or "adult" menu.

Yelp
Shocked this place wouldn't have a full 5 star on their review's, It was my first time here and im glad i drop in. Delicious food with great service at amazing price, can't beat that. Atmosphere is so chill, love the decore and the beautiful plants.

Yelp
Great place!! My wife and I got the pineapple fajitas, which were ginormous and delicious. They easily fed the both of us and I think we even had some leftovers. Great ambiance, great food, great value for the money--definitely check it out!!!

Yelp
Modern decor, cozy vibes, and gooood Mexican food. My husband and I stumbled into this little gem late on a Friday night. We were seated immediately around 9 PM at the comfy couch near the front of the restaurant. Very romantic feel with the low lights at night. We ordered a beer (Tecate), a house marg, chips & salsa, the enchiladas mole, and the burrito w/ steak. Everything was beautifully plated and delicious. Definitely would like to come back to try more of their food + drinks!

Yelp
We were visiting Chattanooga and happened across this place. It got good reviews and we were in the area, so we wanted to give it a try. There was some conflicting information online about whether they closed at 8:00 or 10:00 PM on Friday nights. We arrived around 8:00 and were relieved that they were, in fact, open until 10:00. So glad we took the chance. It was a great experience! We were seated right away. Our waiter was great. The food was absolutely delicious. I had the mahi tacos. Other family members had street tacos. Reasonably priced. Very fresh and flavorful. Could not have asked for more. Highly recommended! We will go back the next time we are in town.

Yelp
We dined at the bar. The service was great! Everyone was welcoming! This place is beautiful and the food and drinks are top tier.

Yelp
Looks can be deceiving. I walked in and did not think I was about to eat authentic Mexican food. This is a modern restaurant with beautiful artwork inside. As soon as I ate the salsa, I knew I was about to eat a good meal! The salsa was spicy and flavorful. I wanted to take a jar home with me...so good! I went on a night the power was down and they were only taking cash so I was limited on what I could order since I didn't have much cash. The power did come back on, but I decided to stick with what I ordered. I had an agua fresca, it's made daily, I went with the pineapple flavor instead of getting a cocktail. Now if I had known it was paloma happy hour I would have ordered one or two. That is probably one opportunity, my server was very friendly, but he didn't' let me know they had happy hour specials. I ordered the street taco plate, and selected rajas, nopales, and shrimp as my protein fillings. I also added a side of Mexican rice since it didn't come with it. This is one of the best Mexican meals I had since leaving my home state, if I lived here this would be one of my go to spots and the prices were very affordable.

Yelp
The poblano queso was good. The flauntas were not. The aqua frescas was tasty and refreshing

Yelp
This remains my number one go to place for Mexican food here in Chattanooga. The food is great, reasonably priced and while there sometimes may be some inconsistencies to service, the owner seems to always be there, checking in, and assuring you are having a favorable experience. While it's not much to look at from the street, don't allow that to deter you from giving it a try. We locals are always there for a reason!
google avatar

Izzy J.

Yelp
I thought this place was so great. It was very popular so we had to wait a while to get a table. The staff was so nice, the food came out fast, lots of great options on their menu and everything tasted amazing. It was a little loud inside but not bad. I totally recommend this place if you're looking for good Mexican food.
google avatar

Molly U.

Yelp
I love the interior of the places. Great lighting, great vibes. We had a big group of ten but our waitress was super nice and we didn't have to wait long for our food to come out. I ordered the 3 Mexican street style tacos with barbacoa. I also got a side of avocado. The tacos were good. Definitely not the juiciest. But good overall. I would probably get it again. If you like authentic tacos this may not be to your liking.

Yelp
It's been 6 days since I stopped here while driving back to Nashville on a road trip and I still can't stop thinking about the *actual perfection* that were the chicken tacos I ate here. Arrived here, hangry, after an exhausting long drive through traffic & rain landed me in Chattanooga after my usual lunch spot had closed. Easy and plentiful free street parking around here, which was wonderful. First off, this restaurant is just beautiful: white walls, plants, cozy cushioned seating outdoors - ideal coastal grandma aesthetic. This space belongs in a home decor magazine. Sat at the bar and the bartender *immediately* hooked me up with chips, queso (which isn't on the menu but seems to be a regular offering here!) and a Mexican coke, which was peak service perfection to me because I was so exhausted. He let me take my time ordering and eventually I also got guacamole (delish! Made excellent leftovers!), the chicken tinga tacos and... with his helpful steering the pollo chicken tacos. Also had some salsa on the side. Everything was great, but that pollo chicken taco was a REVELATION. I haven't had Mexican street tacos that good or that authentic since I was in actually in Mexico. I am still, days later, floored by how insanely good they were, and heartbroken that I won't be in Chattanooga anytime soon to have them again. Absolute new favorite not just in Chattanooga but for street tacos in the South. Loveeeeee this place and the excellent service was just a cherry on top of an already perfect visit!

Yelp
We came here for lunch on a Saturday afternoon in May 2022. The restaurant is very pretty inside modern and chic. We ordered fish tacos shrimp burrito and fajitas. Fish tacos were a little bland. But the shrimp burrito was filled with shrimp. I got the fajitas and they were hot and good. We also ordered guacamole and salsa very tasty. Prices were reasonable. Although my sister got her beans and rice on the side instead of inside the burrito and they charged her extra to put it on the side. Weird.. The restaurant is located in an industrial area it seemed out of place and we almost didn't stop and go in because of the area but we are glad we did it was beautiful inside. There is some parking on the street and some parking behind the restaurant. Call and check the hours before coming they close after lunch and then reopen for dinner.

John B.

Yelp
Great food Great Service My only complaint is the noise level and it's all conversation. You have to yell to hold a conversation. Bonus there is places nearby to park and have pay $12 to park or worry about getting a ticket.
google avatar

Cindy V.

Yelp
Tasty and authentic! Service is always good, and the margaritas are top shelf. Indoor/outdoor bar window in summer. Plenty of street parking.
google avatar

Yelp
Great food and location The food was Authentic and great drinks were strong and good worth the price compared to other places!

Yelp
We had our dog with us, so we had to wait for the patio, and it was over an hour wait, but it was worth it once we tried our cocktails and the queso. We stayed at Exile bar across the street. The decor is cute and calming. The bar is beautiful, and the patio has heaters, so even on a chilly night, it was comfortable. The terrace is also where their to-go window is located. We appreciated that our appetizer was comped because we had to wait so long for our table. The queso is thick non-drippy cheese with jalapeños and mushrooms, and maybe peppers in it. I scrapped the bowl clean with their thin, crispy, perfectly salted chips. Our server was attentive and helpful with making our drinks land food selections. The 21 Seeds Margarita was delectable with the perfect hint of spice. It is cucumber, jalapeño tequila, lime, agave, and salt. At the same time, my husband enjoyed the Lmanzailla, a gin drink with bergamot, lemon, and chamomile. For our main course, we ordered pineapple fajitas. It comes in half a pineapple and easily feeds two hungry adults. If we lived here, we could have taken home leftovers. A side of rice and beans accompanied the pineapple filled with peppers, onions, steak, chicken, and shrimp. The three flour tortillas seemed homemade and were the perfect size for holding the best food combo. We really enjoyed our meal and the kind staff. We will be back.

Yelp
Laid back yet sophisticated, the vibe here is a big plus. The decor transported me away from Chattanooga's winter drizzle to a secret warm and welcoming south-of-the-border hideaway. Service was friendly and competent. The elote was a disappointment and here's why: First, the corn did not taste fresh - it tasted like it was from a can, like the corn Mrs. Werble used to slap onto my plastic tray at my grade school cafeteria. Second, it lacked the bright spice and acidity this dish needs. Third, the proportions were off - too much mayo, not enough cotija. If you are going to charge for chips and salsa, which in my opinion is un-American, they had better be worth it. These weren't bad, but tasted like, well, they tasted like they should have been free. I enjoyed my cheese enchiladas. I wish the sauce on top would have been stronger on the tomatillo and weaker on the cheese - there was already plenty of cheese inside the tortillas. Perhaps I've been a little too critical - overall, I had a lovely evening and felt well taken care of, and there's a lot to be said for that.

Yelp
Best Mexican in our area amazing margaritas nice staff and cool look inside I would encourage everyone to try it
google avatar

Camille F.

Yelp
Cool art inside. Service great. Drinks are good--$7 for the house marg is a great price. Food was ok. I think my Huarache was missing some of the toppings that were listed on the menu. Great experience, inside is lovely.

Isabella R.

Yelp
When we first came we waited at the door and man came we asked to be seated and told him we were going to be 9 ppl in total he said there was no space but we saw an open booth and asked to be seated there and he said he would be to crowded but we obviously fit. The rest of my time there was pretty good food was ok. I give it a 3 bc service was good and had a kinda good time there
google avatar

Shimere B.

Yelp
This was my first time visiting this little gem and I'll definitely be back! As a chattanooga native, I'm definitely loving these more authentic style restaurants that are popping up. I had carne asada tacos as well as the barbacoa taco and they were both divine! My friend and I shared the delicious guac and queso for starters. The margaritas were good and they even have a happy hour here! Great location, a must try.
google avatar

Joy K.

Yelp
There is nothing bad or mediocre about this restaurant. The food is consistently excellent. The bar and the craft cocktails are excellent. The atmosphere is a lot of fun and really comfortable. The service is excellent. I love this place! A truly great upscale Mexican restaurant. You don't get that too often.
google avatar

Cyd D.

Yelp
What a great find! Four of us met for lunch and it was great. Everyone enjoyed the margaritas and the food was fresh, tasty and beautifully presented. Our server, Jake, was very attentive but also understood we were old friends that were catching up and did not rush us at all. Will be heading back next time I am in Chattanooga.
google avatar

Sislerice S.

Yelp
Delicious food, creative! Bouncy, happy atmosphere! Great drinks too! Fresh ingredients!! And now I am so full!
google avatar

Lindsay G.

Yelp
Don't let the reviews fool you, this place is mid at best. We went during lunch - the salsa was great but everything else was kind of bland, especially the guacamole. The service was ok and the vibe was kind of cool - but I feel like this place would be a better dinner spot rather than lunch. I would recommend it, I'm sure their dinner and drinks are much better, but I will not be back.
google avatar

Adlybeiry F.

Yelp
Food and service were good, but I didn't like that they don't have a baby changing station in the bathroom. I had to change my baby's diaper in the car. Please please make your restaurant family friendly!! Ty
google avatar

Ashley M.

Yelp
If you plan on going on a beautiful afternoon or evening, call ahead! They fill up quick and there is no wonder why. Food quality is great, service is wonderful. I like the outside bar seating area that opens up to the inside of the restaurant, lots of tequila options and fresh cocktails. Great place to get your taco fix.
google avatar

Yelp
4.5* Reading several reviews about this place and suggesting to get reservations... Was right on point. I came here with the wife for our anniversary and on our quick getaway from our city. And getting there early and finding for parking was definitely useful. We opted to walk around and see what else was around the area and there are tons of plenty of bars/breweries that you can visit. Parking wise, after 6PM it's free on the slanted parking on the street. Otherwise, if you're lucky to find a spot on the street, that's free as well. The food was good. I ordered a dish that came with two meats along with tortillas to wrap it in. I believe the menu that is listed on the website isn't the same so be wary of what you see on the website and when you get to the restaurant. The wife got the flautas and it wasn't bad, but I wouldn't say were the best. It was nice trying something different though. For the tortillas, you had the choice of corn or flour, I ordered corn but flour at first...but then the waitress remembered and brought me corn tortillas on top of my flour tortillas and it was unexpected. Overall, Taqueria Jalisco was great! I believe that this is definitely a solid spot and a great place to eat at after a few brews from local breweries around the area. I would definitely recommend this place, but I highly recommend to reserve before you go.

Yelp
This place is so incredibly good. The quality of food is very high. The ambiance is chill yet very nice and refined. Can come casual or dress up more. The ingredients are great quality, loved everything we ate!

Craig S.

Yelp
Somehow unique and traditional, at the same time. On a trip to Chattanooga, we needed a dinner spot for a group of 12. Lucky for us, Taqueria Jalisco could accommodate. This places checks every box - fantastic food, great value, solid service, and a fun atmosphere. We visited in November, but the outdoor area looks like a hit in warmer weather. Will absolutely visit again.

Yelp
Really enjoyed this place with my mom! We both had the chicken street tacos which I recommend The chips n salsa Classic margarita No wait Good customer service Fast service The green sauce 2/5 Definitely recommend this spot

Yelp
I was excited to try this restaurant after reading so many great reviews. First impressions were strong; the restaurant was beautiful and we were greeted quickly by a very friendly hostess. Service was on the slow side to order and receive cocktails but drinks were delicious. Queso w/ poblanos and salsa were tasty. Molotes were not like any I've had and were in a flour wrap that was too thick and too crispy to easily eat without a steak knife to cut into it. Because of the outside, it was difficult to taste the filling (carnitas, read on) and sauce added no moisture or flavor. Entrees of a burrito and carnitas were both bland. I had to ask for sauce for the carnitas because it was so dry. Did not appear to be finished correctly as there was no crispiness to the exterior. It was a pretty plate of food that did not deliver on flavor. Overall, my experience started strong and ended in disappointment. After asking around, got recommendations for other Mexican restaurants that I will try next time I'm in Chattanooga. Would revisit for drinks but would skip dining.

Yelp
Fabulous. Excellent food, perfect staff. The recipe for the Al Pastor tacos was unlike anything I've ever had. 5-stars all day long.

Yelp
Wow what a Beautiful Place! We went for lunch on Cinco de Mayo and were seated quickly. The inside of their newly remodeled restaurant is like you're in Miami or some ultra chi chi place... just beautiful! Lovely wicker chairs and stone tables.... cool art on the walls everywhere. Outside is a large seating area with beautiful Bougainvillea climbing the pillars. Wow just wow. We ordered the Guacamole & chips with water and Guava Jarritos... delish! The guac is sooo good, nice & chunky served with warm chips. Perfecto! We had the Chicken Burrito Bowl and a selection of tacos. The entrees were so delicious. The burrito bowl was full of delicious chicken and huge slices of avocado too. The perfect combo of flavors. Each taco was also wonderful. They are the smaller street taco size which is perfect for trying a combination of meats and flavors... all excellent!! Our service was excellent, and the restaurant was packed with other lunch goers. We'll be going back to try the Tortas and cocktails.... I've heard they're amazing. Check out this 5 star restaurant.... the cuisine is killer good!

Yelp
This was our first time here and it did not disappoint. The food was exceptional! It was seasoned just right. Waiter brought two unique shaped bottles of water for the table. Plus, he was great and very helpful by explaining some of the menu items. Very clean and pleasantly decorated. We will definitely be back!

Abdul E.

Yelp
I went there on a Saturday afternoon. No wait time for party of 4. Server informative and welcoming. Service is fast. Atmosphere very welcoming with artwork posted gives a Hispanic theme. The chips and shrimp mango ceviche is amazing. The daily menu offers many options. It does not include prices so feedback to include prices. My son got the quesoberria from the daily specials it was 3 beef quesadillas and he loves liked it. They have 3 street taco for $9. As expected for this price, these tacos are light with just few topics such as parsley and onions. I tried the chipotle chicken, steak and barbacoa. They where Al light. The best was the chicken. The pineapple shrimp meats fajita is huge for $25 needs two who may finish it. It is well seasoned and full do meats served in a carved pineapple half. It comes with 3 warm tortillas so obviously we need more. The burrito full of great combinations of flavors. Overall excellent experience and plan to return
google avatar

Stephanie Y.

Yelp
Trendy restaurant with also a truck! Great interior and vibes that are great for casual date night or quick lunch. Food came out super quick and all tasted delicious. They offer their tacos two ways, one with flour vs corn tortillas. Chicken and steak were both good and seasoned well. Queso is the velvety thic type and not super watery, definitely recommend adding the jalapeños!
google avatar

Madison S.

Yelp
First, The restaurant is so clean and the staff is friendly. They're very attentive! The salsa and cheese was the best I have ever had. My partner and I ordered the tacos. I got the americano and he got the mexican street style. We were both impressed and he loved the cactus. The americano tacos were very filling and very big. We will definitely return! It's our new favorite!

Yelp
Beautiful restaurant, excellent service, AMAZING AND AUTHENTIC Mexican food. The drinks were delicious, wide range of tequila choices too!

Yelp
Food was good. Not somewhere to go alone unless you sit at the bar apparently. Also, very loud environment.
google avatar

Sara L.

Yelp
Treated myself to lunch just now at my favorite locally owned restaurant. Hadn't been here since right before the pandemic started. Still an amazing experience of course! The staff are so nice, easygoing, and even caught a glimpse of the owner Jorge working alongside everyone. This place is so welcoming. I sat outside in their newer covered patio area and enjoyed tasty chicken flautas after crunchin down on their delicious chips and salsa for a bit. One tip: Lunch on the earlier side locals.
google avatar

Vanessa N.

Yelp
I have come to appreciate city that provide free parking after 6pm. There is a parking lot across the street and also some street parking. I had the flautas, which were decent, but I definitely was not impressed. Maybe since I never had it with pickled carrots before. The pickled carrots reminded me more of egg rolls that you can find at Asian restaurants, so for me the flavor profiles were confusing and didn't really work. It was very busy and there is no more social distancing or masks, so make your own Covid precaution decisions. There is outside seating available.
