16 Essential Tacos to Try in San Francisco

"Raul Medina’s plant-based tacos are outstanding, well-balanced with soft, oily tortillas. His work has been celebrated throughout the state and he opened a new shop on Telegraph Avenue in 2023. Now San Franciscans can finally enjoy that splendor thanks to Medina’s Saluhall outpost, one of five local makers in the huge marketplace. The carnitas, greasy and rich, are triumphant." - Paolo Bicchieri, Dianne de Guzman, Eater Staff

Saluhall is the newest food hall in Downtown SF that's located right next to the city IKEA. It's clean, fresh feeling, and has a variety of eateries to please a lot of different taste buds. La Venganza is located on the top floor as the only 100% plant based option inside the food haul, and I was happy to see them selling tacos, tortas, and fries to all the hungry vegans like myself. I couldn't resist and ordered their Carne Asada (made from seitan) Fries, which was absolutely loaded and a delicious meal with all the right fixings. It came out to $20 which is a bit steep but these are SF prices I suppose. Strangely, the hall does not offer any sort of compostable utensils so you'll have to bring your own if you are planning to grab takeout from the hall.

The most amazing vegan tacos I have ever had. I had the taco meal which comes with rice and beans on the side and it was delicious. I was visiting SF from London and pleasantly surprised to be able to have some delicious mexican food. I came here maybe 3 or 4 times during my trip, you can choose different flavours for each of your 3 tacos, but the pollo was my favourite and became my regular order.

When I say this food is so fire… Visited their Saluhall location while on vacation this past week. Been following the instagram page for years and finally fulfilled the dream of eating here. Been vegan for 8 years and this is hands down some of the best, most reasonably priced food I’ve ordered out in a long time. Raul was super nice and made the experience of ordering simple, and that salsa verde too gas. Chicken nachos and barbacoa tacos my personal favorites. Will for sure be back my next visit to Cali from Connecticut.

Taqueria La Veganza, nestled in the bustling food hall area next to IKEA, is a hidden gem for vegan Mexican cuisine enthusiasts. However, a word of caution: map apps often mislead you to the wrong location, so keep an eye out for IKEA and enter through that. The menu at Taqueria La Veganza is refreshingly simple and focused, offering a delightful array of vegan Mexican dishes. Despite its simplicity, each item is crafted with precision and perfection, showcasing the culinary expertise of the chefs. The menu primarily features tacos, burritos, and bowls, with a choice of seitan or tofu as the meat substitute. Both options are impeccably prepared, providing a satisfying and flavorful experience. One of the standout features of Taqueria La Veganza is the intricate layering of flavors in every dish. The chefs have mastered the art of balancing spices and seasonings, resulting in a symphony of tastes that dance on your palate. The seitan and tofu are marinated to perfection, absorbing the rich, smoky flavors that are characteristic of traditional Mexican cuisine. The beans and rice at Taqueria La Veganza deserve a special mention. The beans are seasoned to perfection, offering a hearty and savory complement to the main dishes. The rice, fluffy and well-cooked, is infused with subtle spices that enhance its natural flavor. Together, they form a delicious base that elevates the overall dining experience. Value for money is another highlight of Taqueria La Veganza. The tacos are generously packed with fillings, ensuring that every bite is a burst of flavor. The portions are substantial, making it a great option for those looking for a satisfying meal without breaking the bank. Whether you opt for the seitan or tofu, you can expect a hearty serving that leaves you feeling full and content.

Taco plate is 3 big tacos + delicious beans + well seasoned fried rice. Very filling, probably better if shared between two people. Only gripe is I can't tell which flavor is which taco since I forgot to ask lol. I liked the seitan baed ones better. The food court is clean (even though the outside street parking isn't). It's on the 2nd floor along with the other vegan stall.

Being able to eat such a variety of vegetarian tacos is a true and amazing treat. The flavors and textures are so so good. A must-visit if you are a vegetarian who misses a good carnitas taco. (They do serve with cilantro, but I asked for none since I sadly have the soap-gene for cilantro)

The taco was INSANELY good!! I’m genuinely so impressed by the taste and quality, especially for being vegan! This is a must try if you’re here or in Oakland.

Unbelievable vegan tacos. Made of seitan, mushroom, and other alternatives the true Mexican flavor still comes through. The tortillas are excellent as are the rice and beans.
