London’s Best New Restaurants of 2019 - Eater London

"Tayēr + Elementary — a world-class cocktail bar in-the-making — became the permanent home for two of the city’s most genuinely exciting chefs. Zijun Meng and Ana Gonçalves’ TāTā Eatery, a four-seater counter in an ultra modern room, has been responsible for some of the city’s most exciting cooking this year. Their self-described “east meets west” cuisine has resulted in dishes like wild strawberry in mushroom broth with savoury sugar puffs; beef with gooseberry, black sesame and shiso; and aged, dried Dover sole with ginger, sake, and a wet herbaceous rice. Constantly evolving and innovating, so one to watch carefully in 2020." - Adam Coghlan

Yelp
Delicious cocktails. My coffee drink was amazing (supposedly tastes like a Frappuccino, but I wouldn't know as I don't drink coffee often) and had no alcohol taste. Drinks were a bit small though. We were expecting something more from a #4 on the 2024 World's 50 Best Bars but can't complain overall about great cocktails served quickly in a beautiful ambiance. It was pretty full on a Friday evening, but we were seated immediately at the bar.

Yelp
I have mixed feelings about this bar. It currently is ranked #4 in The World's 50 Best Bars list of 2024, yet all the drinks are pre-made, meaning you miss out on the bartenders' artistry as they concoct your drink. I don't know about everyone else, but I enjoy watching sushi chefs and bartenders' hands as they work behind the counter and seeing my order come to life. The drinks were good, don't get me wrong, I simply miss the interactive experience. I got there around 5 or 6pm and I was one of two customers there at the time. Service was lovely -- I got chatting with a few of the servers behind the counter for food/drinks as well as what to check out in the area and had a nice laugh. The margarita and frozen coffee were well balanced and good, but I felt like they weren't memorable considering the recent ratings. Ordered the mushroom tempura which was lightly fried - perfect to help me sober up after my drinks.

Yelp
Having become a drinker since moving to London - because why not - I've come to realize my cocktail tastes are even more snobby than my food tastes. That means it takes a lot to hit all the sweet spots and make me want to make the trip back. Of the handful of cocktail bars in London that have pleasantly surprised me, I can say with certainty that this joint should tick off all the boxes on your list, as well. The concept is incredibly creative, and these guys are not afraid to push the limits of what can make a good cocktail even better. The menu boasts a hefty variety of boozy concoctions with an inventive twist that will leave your taste buds begging for more. You have classics like the Cherry Blossom Highball, The Elementary Frozen Coffee (my favorite), Cedarwood Old Fashioned, and Jasmine Mai Tai. The ingredients they're using are not only top quality, but in some cases, they're doing collaborations with other local distilleries and purveyors of fine alcohol. As mentioned, my favorite is the Elementary Frozen Coffee, which is a slushie-style cocktail with coconut milk, Havana Club 7yo Rum, Condensed Milk, Tia Maria, and of course, coffee. I also tried their seasonal Coconut Whey Sour, which is made with Waqar Pisco, Lysholm Linie Aquavit, Cocchi Americano, Coconut + Whey Cordial. Don't worry, I don't know what most of those are, either. I only know that it's good. For my fellow foodies out there, they also offer delicious bar snacks with an equally creative twist, like the Shiitake Bao and Croquettes Madame with a fried quail egg. The space may feel a bit cramped during their busier times, but the service is always top-notch and willing to accommodate. If you're lazy about reserving ahead, good news! It's walk-ins only. The bad news: even if you're coming in with 4 people... it's walk-ins only.

Yelp
Supposedly one of the hottest bars right now in London since they are number 8 on the world's best bar 2023 list. However I was pretty underwhelmed by the drinks. We came without a reservation and was seated right away which was nice. However, service was a bit snooty and I felt like they were either eager to get us to order more drinks or to get us to clear the table. We ordered gildas as appetizers and was severely underwhelmed. We had just came from Spain and it wasn't even anywhere close to what we had in Spain. Overall pretty disappointing experience.

Yelp
Tayer + Elementary must be removed from the 50 Best Bar list. All the cocktails at Elementary are pre-made and kept in bottles within a fridge. Nobody actually makes you a drink. Literally. After two of their seasonal pre-made drinks, I asked for a basic classic cocktail and was told I couldn't order that or anything else off menu because all the drinks here are pre-made only. Have you ever been to a cocktail bar that told you they couldn't make you ANY cocktails!? It's almost comical. You know what else is pre-made? McDonald's. If you can pour Coca Cola from a bottle into a glass, you're half qualified to tend bar here. You won't ever be making a drink, so why need other qualifications? What proof is there that the bartenders actually know how to make a drink? Obviously someone created the pre-made cocktails, but there's no telling who's talent that was. It also makes for a boring experience sitting at the bar. I'm sure I'm not alone in saying it's so much fun watching a mixologist work. Here I just watch someone open a fridge and pour a drink. There are no colorful displays of limes, lemons, oranges, and bitters. I have so many more critiques but that's the gist. I've drank at many World's Best Bars winners, and half the 2023 current top 10. This was far and above the biggest disappointment. Two stars, because at least the pre-made drinks tasted good. Not great. Good. It's a bland experience, and one would think Alex Kratena and the 50 Best folks would understand that.

Yelp
Good drinks, abominable service. I arrived when there were seats available but they were still maintaining a queue outside. Fine, but when it came time to be seated, they sat me outside (it's 14 degrees C) and I asked if I could be seated inside and they said no, even though as I mentioned there were seats available. They do offer complimentary water and brought over a tiny thing of pretzels which I appreciated. The one sip martini was fine but a bit of a shtick. I tried the London Cocktail Week cocktail which was a peach based drink and it was fine but nothing to write home about. The menu is interesting and reasonably affordable (quite a few drinks in the £10-£13 range). Overall though, the service was just sooo snooty. I think being named second best cocktail bar in the world has gone straight to their egos. There are more impressive cocktails in london where you'll receive good service.

Yelp
Tayer is amazing. The experimental flavors in all our drinks worked great together. I adore the rotational aspect of the menu and the impulse to extract what you can from the ingredients at your disposal. I think my chestnut drink was the best of the night. Elementary is good, too, though much more basic. The single shot martini is great, though! Worth the price of admission.

Yelp
Super hipster cocktail joint. It's low key, super dim and relaxing. Food is top notch - they have snacks and small plates. I've always seen oysters on the menu, but it's covered in a coriander mojo and I prefer mine plain with fresh lemon. The other snacks and plate are rotating. Cocktails average around £10/drink, and they have non-alcoholic options for non-drinkers. Definitely a cute first date spot to chat each other up! ;)

Yelp
Space is great. At the first bar Tayer service was very prompt and nice. In the second bar elementary our bartender/server was very good. The main bartender owner my husband says was very focused on her job. Nothing bad we just really wanted to talk to her but it was not possible. We came in on an early day, not super busy maybe just an off day. Bar was beautiful. Chairs at Tayer were a lil bit thigh but we understand the turn and burn.

Yelp
Me saying this place was good does it no justice... Upon going in here it was a spot I've had on my list to try and once I got here I realized I was in for a great experience. Upon arrival, I had to wait (they take no reservations) understanding this was a place I was expecting to wait. The wait actually went by pretty quick (talking to people in the line helped). So once they say there ready for me, they ended up sitting me in the back (VIP area) where the kitchen, drinks and magic is made. Sitting back there you can see everything going on visually and also get a chance to watch your drinks being made. The decor of this place was top notch and well crafted. I'm a clean, minimalist so seeing the tidiness and quality of this place was impressive. Once I sat down I was immediately greeted, and I told the server this place is known for quality drinks so I'll try your recommendations. It's a rarity for me to try all the recommendations, but I made an exception here. Literally everything I tried was so good I would of ordered each thing again. I ordered some bar food and the drinks were crafted so well, I ordered a few. The first one I got was called a banana peel and after I tried it I told my server, this is a dangerous drink because it doesn't taste like alcohol. All the drinks followed this trend of being good quality. By the time I left, I left full and buzzed. I didn't want to believe I was just in aww (I could have been) but looking around at the other customers I wasn't the only one trying multiple things. Overall my take aways is if your in London, Go! It is worth the trip, the price is good and it's easy to go overboard if your interested in trying a few drinks. The staff is personable and will give you good recommendations. This place is the epitome of a well run machine, that I'd go back to anytime I'm in town. Right now it's the #2 Bar in the World and I hope my story helped validate that.

Yelp
If I can leave 0 stars I would. Drinks are ok, but worst service I've seen in years. For a bar that is ranked in top of the world this was bad. Last call was at 11:55am even when they told us before they close at 1:30am. At 00:15am within a 5min time span 3 people had to tell us to leave. At that point we were only waiting for our friend who was in the bathroom. The first girl who came and told us was nice about it, but then second Bartender (2min later) got extremely rude. When pointing out he said he had to be aggressive which is absolutely not needed in anyway. They 30seconds later security came. Hospitality is far to be found at this bar and would never send people here. Best tip: DONT go here as they are rude and aggresive to leave asap.

Yelp
A great place to catch up with friends and hang out! My friend and I walked in without a reservation and were seated right away. The drinks were premade (not what I was expecting for Worlds #2 best bar) but good nonetheless.

Yelp
Been to T+E 3x in the last 3 months and it never fails to disappoint. Service is whip fast, the snax are innovative and flavourful and the drinks above all are outstanding. Docked a star for ambiance (the vibe is chill but the music screams CLUB) and the doorman/bouncer at the door was extremely rude to my friends at the entrance for no reason as well as being prohibited from using the toilet closest to our seats (supposedly they were reserved for dinner guests but why the segregation?!) when the other toilet had a queue of 3 people.

Yelp
Voted as #2 best bar in the world last year. Fun, trendy, atmosphere with boozy drinks. The decor was on the minimalist side. Bartender was very nice and explained what their popular drinks were. One sip martini was very good, especially with the stuffed olive. Give them a visit if you're ever in London!

Yelp
Currently ranked the #2 best bar in the world, I stopped by for a quick drink. Got complimentary pretzels and the Yuzu Negroni. Drinks were good but I couldn't try any more because I had an appointment to go to. Good service and atmosphere though.

Yelp
I'm still baffled no one has reviewed this absolute gem of a place. First of all, it's two concepts in one location. The super laid back Elementary plays the part of front of store. Honestly, if you weren't paying attention that's all you would notice of the place. In a "not quite" speakeasy fashion, you have Tayer hidden behind Elementary and that's where the magic happens. I loved both sides of this culinary coin, but my words are going to focus on Tayer more than anything else. We started our journey at Elementary, natch, with some refreshing beverages to stave off the insane heatwave London was experiencing. That alone should prove climate change to any doubters, but that's another conversation altogether. So.... I had a Frozen Coffee which was delicious with a nice kick. My two dining companions had a One-Sip Martini (served in the perfect tiny glass) and a Frozen "Sex on the Beach". Both were equally yummy though I'm not sure why that last cocktail had quotes. Then we were brought into Tayer, with its limited seating and "man behind the curtain" vibe (I'm on the quotes train too). There is some serious mad scientist level of flavor art going on back here. We all ordered The Sando, a sandwich so incredible that people were having an O face while eating it in public. I wish I was joking on that last part, but I saw it occur with my eyes. Quite the intimate eating experience. We also had the "Prawn Crackers" and the "Quesadilla" (man, they love their quotes at this place), but everything paled in comparison to the pork goodness that is the Sando. Seriously, order two of those sandwiches the first time you try it. You'll thank me later. Now onto the libations. Yeah, I used the word libation. This is the kind of establishment that can weather a haughty word such as that and still be worth it. The cocktails on this side of the restaurant are where the mad science comes to play. Infusions, liquor brand collaborations, and flavor experiments are littered throughout the cocktails section. I went with the Raspberry (they name their cocktails after the most forward flavor in the drink) and that mouthwatering concoction was exactly what I needed. This is the kind of place that I need to visit repeatedly just so I can go down the list and sample every beverage they have on the menu. The staff is amazing. The food is amazing. It all comes together in an exceedingly cool atmosphere that's never trying too hard. I really can't say enough good things about Tayer-Elementary. My only regret is that I won't be back in London until later this year, so I'll have to gaze upon my photos of the Sando and live vicariously through those tasty memories until my return.

Yelp
(Part 2) Fourth was Iberico pork, fermented red pepper sauce, kale, chilli and mint. This was good but strangely was the closest thing to a miss in the whole event. The pork was a little tough and the red pepper sauce a little overpowering for my liking. Don't get me wrong it still tasted good - the crispy kale (which had been blowtorches earlier to maximum dramatic effect) was lush and the puffed rice, as always was a winner - but having to follow what had been before it was probably its biggest downfall! Lastly, milk ice cream, crispies, aronia berries, with caramel folded through and topped with Peruvian mint (possibly huacatay?). Oh man. What a way to finish. Honestly - a very creamy and rich dessert as you'd imagine, but the pops of texture from the crispies, the acidity from the aronia berries (which I've never had before but will absolutely be seeking out) and the exorbitant luxury of the caramel seaming throughout was a match made in heaven. The Peruvian mint cut through the lot with a hum of herbiness. This was an absolute 10 of a dessert, faultless in every aspect and I could have eaten 5 of them. On drinks, first I had one of the collab pale ales (Elementary x Partizan) which hit the spot. A subtle but hoppy pale which is right up my, and any self respecting beer lovers street. Second was one of the best cocktails I've ever had - and I can only remember one word - Cascara. It was vermouth based, but I can't remember much more than that and didn't take a pic of the menu frustratingly. However - however - this was an arrestingly delicious drink, bold, rich and full of flavour, which packed a proper punch, and reminded me a souped up negroni. I'm so glad I got to experience this. This was a drinking and dining experience ill never forget, and will be recommending to all who ask in the weeks and months to come. The high expectation was fully lived up to. Utterly delicious food and wonderful cocktails. This place is an absolute must - if you can get in!

Yelp
Cocktails are premade at £13+ a pop with an additional service charge. Pass. Service was ok. They give you pretzels and "complimentary" water

Yelp
Food and drinks are pretty nice like 3-4 out of 5 but sanitary and service was terrible. It seems like 4 seats are too much for the kitchen and staffs to handle. Food pairing was very creative and enjoyed most of it.. but it is small kitchen and the beauty of private dining is to have full experience with chef. But entire restaurant has no sense of sanitary.. they start cleaning kitchen when chef start preparing last meal course. They were changing trash bag and start taking cleaning supplies out on the countertop while chef was finishing plating on the other side.. worst part was one of staff join to help on plating without washing their hands while cleaning. Owner Alex and chef Meng was there but no one stopped him or acknowledged about it. I could have just leave without saying anything.. but I did let Alex know about this to see how he can handle it but he was just rushing to finish payment process. Big disappointment and definitely lacking on restaurant management skill here!
