Singapore's Hawker Centers Were on the Brink of Disappearing. Then the Government and the U.N. Stepped In. | Bon Appétit

"At the counter of the roti prata stall, I watch as a hawker smashes, folds, and turns stretchy dough into flatbread. Working quickly, he flips the roti prata, golden brown and flaky soft, onto a plate and hands it to me with hot curry for dipping. Another hawker “pulls” me a cup of teh tarik, pouring a stream of milky black tea between two vessels until frothy, which I sip as I walk by lines for stalls selling prawn noodles, mutton biryani, and curry puffs." - BySonia Chopra

10/6/2025 Had breakfast here & finished with barley drink ($1.50) from Ling Xin Drink Stall, was quite good. Certain sections of the hawker centre can be quiet warm, you may want to choose those tables nearer to the main road. More stalls will be operational for lunch onwards

Google
A glimpse into local culture and at that, multiculture, through the wet market and hawker centre together here. The sights, the smells are intriguing for us as tourists. Not as tidy / clean as Maxwell but good diversity of eateries; one side is Indian and the other more Chinese food. Kids were fans of roti prata for breakfast together with Milo ais. Affordable prices.

I was here today for lunch with a friend. Whilst there are many South Indian vegetarian stalls here, Tekka Centre Food Centre is IMO probably more famous for its many Briyani stalls. Apart from South Indian vegetarian foods and Briyani, the food centre here also hosts a famous Indian Rojak stall and even a Sri Lankan stall - the latter is the only such stall in Singapore. However, one should not think that this hawker centre only offers South Asian cuisine, as there are also Chinese food stalls thereat - mostly concentrated in the part where the hawker centre faces Rochor Road - and herein, there is a famous prawn noodle stall. So, if you are in Little India - whether as a local or as a tourist - and you want to sample predominantly South Indian foods and also other kinds of foods, then I recommend that you visit this hawker centre; however, be wary that this is a oldish hawker centre and it is quite grungy by Singapore standards.

Colourful place including street food, clothing market and wet market. High on atmosphere, low on glam, but definitely worth a stroll and a quick (authentic and cheap) bite to eat. At the heart of Little India.

Google
Big Hawker center in the little india area. It is rather busy and almost chaotic. Some lines from some popular hawkers are spilled around the tables. It makes the dining experience not so good. It is hot and ventilation is not well. Though there are some nice Hawker food stores there.

Google
good chicken briyani as always with huge portion of flavourful basmati rice alongside with the juicy curry chicken paired with the picked cucumbers! used to be only $5.50 but now sadly due to inflation it is now $6.50. all in all i think it is quite a good plate of briyani so if you happen to be around little india can come here give it a try 👍

Google
I visited this place for a bowl of the famous 545 whampoa prawn noodle. Dry one is better than the soup one (as usual if u ate noodles in singapore). Got a lot of indian cuisine here too. Should try next time i visit singapore again

Yelp
In the heart of Little India, if you love Indian food then this is the hawker center to check out. Whether it's biryani rice with chicken which is a huge portion and really good value at Allauddin's Biryani or Roti prata which is basically a thin pancake crepe with different fillings inside. Also, chicken tandoori and garlic naan is really good. The naan is very thin and a bit crispy. A lot different than what I'm used to fluffy and thick naan in the states. There's tons of options here but I wouldn't try any other foods that aren't Indian. There's also plenty of shopping and a market nearby.

Yelp
Very nice soccer cent near Little India it has a wide variety of Indian and Indian Malay food options. A lot of stalls are really good dosa and biryani.

Yelp
Came by for breakfast the other day and it was a tasty experience. Tekka Centre is located right next to the Little India MRT station. The hawker centre has been recently remodeled with enhanced ventilation, new table tops, along with new tiles. The Tekka market is split into cooked and a wet market on the street level. There are shops on the 2nd level. One the street level, the cooked section is split into Chinese vs. Indian stalls. There are drink stalls sprinkled throughout the centre. Favorites here include roti, fish ball noodles, chee cheung fun, to name a few! Make sure to bring cash along with a pocket pack of tissues! Drinks are merely $1 or so at the drink stalls for tea/coffee!

Yelp
A fun hawker center to visit in Little India. We had a guide with us to help us determine which food to get & to order it, it could've been a bit overwhelming if we were just on our own. It is very clean with lots of wonderful different aromas in the air.

Yelp
Incredible street food! We visited Tekka Market Food Centre on a Sunday (late) morning and found it super busy. We somehow managed to snag a table for our group of 6 and took turns getting food at the various vendors. I got a massive plate of Chicken Biryani for only $7 and it was phenomenal - so flavorful and tasty. We also loved the Cheese Prata and Mango Lassis, which they made fresh right in front of us. Three Mango Lassis and a bottle of water cost us only $10 so the pricing was great (but cash only) We also loved walking around the lively market afterwards. Totally worth a visit!

Yelp
I forgot to take a picture of the food, so here's a picture with two mutual friends from Texas I randomly ran into at the Tekka Centre in the middle of Singapore. I enjoyed buying fruits and eating here. My Indian friends said it reminded them of India but without the digestive problems, so I think that really speaks to how good this place is. We had good, cheap, and tasty Indian food.

Yelp
This hawker centre is located in the Little India neighborhood of Singapore. It's not a far walk from the nearest subway stop. We visited Little India strictly to eat at this centre. We came here in the middle of the week (Wednesday) during about the brunch /lunch hour time (11 am - 12 pm). It was already packed and happening. It's a big place with food vendors in the front and food grocery/ meat market in the back on the main floor. There's a second floor where you can find clothes and appliances shopping stores. We didn't know where to start. There was so much food available everywhere. They have Indian food, Malaysian food, Sri Lankan food, Chinese food, Indonesian food etc. available here. First, we browsed through the different aisles to see what catches our eyes. We wanted to start of light and make our to way to the heavy, filling food. We came across a Sri Lankan food stall and we liked the idea of having curry Mutton (goat) and rice. We had never eaten Sri Lankan food before so this was a good starting choice. Our food was served in a banana leaf on a tray. It had rice, Mutton curry, salad, pickled veggies and papadum. The food looked simple but it was tasty and good. My brother and I shared this dish. Next, we were ready for another meal but first, we decided to wash our first meal down with a drink. Singapore's hawker centres have a lot of fresh fruit juice stalls. They have a good variety of drinks. We grabbed ourselves some fresh fruit drinks and made our way to the next food stall. We found a paratha joint (they spell it as pratha). Pratha is like an Indian tortilla. The flavor and texture of it varies based on its flour and preparation. It can be savory and sweet. We got ourselves a savory kind, medium in size. This place offered stuffed prathas. We got one with Mutton. The medium size was huge in portion size and inexpensive. It was yummylicious to say the least. This pratha dish almost filled us up but we still wanted more food. I had my eyes on some Malaysian breakfast food. When he first got to Tekka centre, there was a stall that had a line which caught my eye. But I didn't go for it then. After having the pratha, I went to that Malaysian breakfast place but unfortunately, they were out of the food I was looking for. So then, we went for a popular biryani place. Allaudin's biryani has been recommended by other foodies so we checked them out. We got a big, loaded plate of flavorful rice, tender meaty curried chicken and dal. It was the icing on the cake. All in all, we had a great experience and we left with our bellies full. Of course, we wished we had more to eat but unfortunately, no. I grabbed one more cup of fruit juice before leaving. I definitely recommend checking this hawker centre out when in Singapore. Thumbs up.

Yelp
We stayed right by this Hawker Center when visiting Singapore and we loved it! It's one of the bigger ones I went to that was very diverse. There's also a shopping center at the top floor. Since this is located in Little India, definitely try the Indian food here! We got the Nasi Goreng (red) and Briyani and a mango lassi from the booth next to it! They were all amazing, but the nasi goreng is my favorite! Be sure to get some naan with it! This place also has the Whampoa Prawn noodles- must try!! Try it dry!!

Yelp
Tekka Centre is a Hawker Center near the Little India MRT station. This center has a lot of food stalls to choose from. The levels of cleanliness from A to D were clearly visible for each stall. Definitely go for Level A and B stalls to prevent from getting sick from poor hygiene stalls. My family and I went here twice and this is a breakdown of their food: The mango lassi was not as creamy or as aromatic as I remembered it to be on my first visit here. But, it was vindicated on my second visit. Man oh man. Sweet, fragrant mango. It was so good. The mutton masala was spicy and flavorful and went well with garlic naan. Chicken tikka masala was ok. It didn't really have as much flavor as the mutton. The chicken tandoori was juicy and had a nice bbq taste. But, still not as good as Naseeb in Houston. The fish biryani here was good. The fish was moist and flaky. Lots of curry seasoning. The rice was fluffy deliciousness as well. Indonesian food was great here too. The Ayam Penyet was probably one of the best things I've eaten here. The chicken was fried perfectly and covered in a thick coat of chili sauce. It was so good. I would come again for just this (and mango lassi of course). Overall, I liked my experience here. If you want to get your Indian food fix, with a side of Indonesian, Malay, and Chinese food, look no further than Tekka Centre. Look at the attached pictures for my recommendations on which stalls to get what type of food.

Yelp
Tekka Market & Food Centre... Indeed you bring fond memories, coz this is one other Market in town, where, my Mother always bring me along to purchase her weekly grocery from all the Uncles and Aunties from spices, to fruits, to Halal Butcher for the poultry and meat galore! Fast forward 2018, Tekka Market still stands strong for the Indian community, being located near Little India itself. Definitely its NOT for the faint of hearts to explore Tekka Market itself. Even until now, My Mother will find her favorite vendor, likewise in EVERY Market I went with her. Thank God, now Tekka Market is connected or near to the Little India MRT Station. Likewise for EVERY Market in town especially during the WEEKENDS, this Market is like a ZOO! I guess there are MORE exploring to do especially for the FOOD Section aka the Food Centre itself. From the numerous visits done with my Mother, friends and cousins, Tekka Market still give me more options to EAT! Dine away like the Locals do, and still it DOES NOT Break the bank. There are slight changes in certain food that they offer here, where due to demand, they do it in a different way, as what I can recall growing up. Such vendor is the Appam stall. Maybe in the future, I will specifically write about this Appam stall/vendor. From Appam, Nasi Biryani, Thosai aka Dosa, Indian Rojak to name a few. I have also realized there are several Chinese Food Vendors also at Tekka Market. For the Chinese Vendors, I cannot write a lot about them coz NONE were Halal items. But the bulk of the Vendors are selling Halal Indian, or Indian food and a few of Malay cuisine as well. All in all, if you want to visit the REAL Indian Neighborhood, your first step is to take the MRT to Little India MRT Station, and explore Tekka Market & Food Centre. Definitely a SENSORY OVERLOAD, as what I could recall one of my good friend HT mentioned about. With all the sounds, smell and decorations, you can feast ALOT usually during the Festive Season such as Deepavali or Diwali celebration. From all the Glitter, Gold, Apparel, Accessories Galore you can find at Tekka Market itself. ANYTHING and EVERYTHING Indian related, Tekka Market has something for everyone. The Indian Community in Singapore, will always trek to Little India and this Market in a heartbeat. Many more visits, to Tekka Market & Food Centre to come especially during the Weekdays for me when needed.

Yelp
Tekka Centre is a cross between a wet market and bustling hawker center located right outside Little India. About half of the stalls sell Chinese-style food, and the other half Indian food, making for a really unique combination! One of my favorite things to get here is biryani--a number of stalls have huge pots of the mixed rice dish hot and ready to go. For just about $6, I got a delicious chicken biryani. which came with a tender chicken leg, deliciously seasoned and oily rice, a hard-boiled egg, a curry sauce on the side for even more flavor, and a pappadum cracker for texture! All the food options here seem delicious and are frequented by locals; however, the cleanliness of the place could definitely be improved.

Yelp
This is my favorite hawker center in Singapore. It is also one of the most challenging. It is in Little India. It is absolutely mobbed - generally with Indians. It looks and feels gray and dirty. (It's not. Sanitation levels in Singapore are superb. ) But it is absolutely dark grungy concrete - and the bathrooms and the meat stands selling sheep organs are right next to you. The open courtyard has fans and is somewhat cool. The interior aisles are jam packed with people. This is where a lot of the tables are. The lack of ventilation and the nine million stoves cooking nearby means that the temperature on the inner aisles is about fifteen degrees warmer than over in the courtyard. Never mind that. The food is great. It is divided into two sections - halal and not-halal. I generally eat on the halal side. And if the stand I want to eat in is on an aisle - then that is where I eat. Mostly the food is Tamil or Malaysian. I have eaten at several stands there and the Tamil food is some of the best I have had in Singapore. Check out Tekka Market and draw two experience cards for doing so.

Yelp
Wow, a huge variety of Indian food and other hawkers. The prices are pretty low and there's plenty of options to appease anyone! A definite place to check out if you are in Singapore.

Yelp
Excellent indian briyani here by bff, locals stays here all their life and indian friend. Chicken briyani at $6, with egg and a cha, the cripsy papadoom. Value for $ and tasty. Better than usual becuase: 1. The biryani rice is all yellow, no uneven rice spread like other seller. All evenly cooked. 2. Chicken curry drumsticks is so tender like it has been steam. Usually eating chicken with plastic spoons and fork would render it broken but their curry chicken drumstick is so tender that it just melt in your mouth. Must try if you like biryani and value for $$$$ * One thing to note : The hawker centre is rather dirty especially during peak hour and at night when crowded , so just eat and go.

Yelp
Home to Singapore's largest indoor wet market, expect to see anything from black chickens to butchers violently chopping up slabs of goat meat to lush roma tomatoes. Fresh produce and variety both guaranteed. You'll also find a big coffeeshop on the ground floor and many other shops on the second floor residing in Tekka Market. Lots of good Indian food stalls to try out, but there are also Chinese and Malay stalls if for some reason, you don't feel like eating briyani. Shops on the second floor are just as colourful. Most sell ethnic Indian clothes that range from simple to elaborate, but there are also tailors, hardware shops and even an antique store! Once I was there with family, mum was admiring a sleeveless salwaar kameez on display outside an apparel shop. Sensing her interest and noticing that she wears the tudung, the staff suggested using the dupatta as sleeves. There was a tailor just next door, and she told us that her neighbour could sew them up within half an hour. Excellent idea! Mum was very pleased with her new outfit.

Simon P.

Yelp
A bustling market with a great range of Indian food and drink. Alcohol is available in one shop. Worthwhile checking a Hawker food guide to steer you to the best spots and offerings. Food seems to be well cooked and authentic - I was guided by a guide book to avoid some of the less bespoke food makers. There is a hand washing facility and toilet. The air is pungent with both spicy smoke and some less pleasant odours and I'm guessing the chance of accidental bacterial food contamination exists, so probably best avoided if pregnant or flying long haul the following day.
google avatar

David S.

Yelp
This rather large building can be a little difficult getting into, especially since the Little India MRT station doesn't open directly into it (which meant we ended up getting a bit wet as we wandered around looking for the entrance). There are two main levels, one of them housing a huge food court, and the upper leven housing a large market that sells quite a lot of fabric. The two times that I have been to Singapore I have wandered around here, especially to look at the fabrics on display, but also to grab something to eat. The thing that I found really disappointing is that the food court is basically an enlarged version of your typical hawker centre, and like many of them simply has a random selection of stalls, which means that they aren't exclusively Indian. That really annoyed me because the main reason I came to Little India was to have Indian food, and in particular curry - a dish that I had a lot of trouble finding.
google avatar

Mélanie B.

Yelp
Great place to eat in Little India. Plenty of choices, even Chinese food to my greatest surprise! In terms of Indian food, which I'm always craving form, I was amazed by the quality of the meals for such low prices. I tried the famous pratta stall and it reminded me of my grandma's Mauritian rotis (highest compliment I could give). I also loved the chendol and the chicken tikka. All of these for $5. The place itself is like any kind of food courts, decently comfy and clean. Not enough trash bins though. I definitely need to go back to try more food!
google avatar

Adrianna T.

Yelp
Good food in the hawker food area - the vade, biryanis, teh halias, and even the prawn noodles (545 Whampoa) Great produce in the wet market area - Chia's for vegetables and herbs that Cold Storage would charge you an arm and leg for (they have everything!); Joe's Butchery for above average cuts of meats (even tripe and osso bucco). Fruits. Eggs. Top notch quality. Follow the sound of the jazz music for the best vegetable shopping experience on this island (at Chia's vegetables, at the back of the store). Cash only.

Yelp
Great intro to the Singapore Indian hawker stall scene. Got my table, reserved it with tissue bag (bought for 1 SD from someone walking around), noted the table number and went wild. Soon all sorts of food started coming! Can't beat the mutton biryani, fish ball soup and the Hiananesse Chicken with various sundry drinks. Cheap and tasty!
google avatar

Raegen S.

Yelp
Yea... I LOVE THE TEKKA MARKET!!!! I mean this is one stop shop for fruit, veg, fish, chicken, shark, and who knows what else is in there! The produce are very reasonably priced and you can get loads of wonderful veg that you cant find in most stores. and what you would pay for a small bag in Jasons you can get more than a basket! my favorite part is that when i get done with finding my produce i can get some amazing naan and curry from the hawker stalls. remember bring cash for everything 1) because it is cheap 2) because i have no idea who takes cards note that this place gets busy and parking can be a pain so it is easier to take the train, assuming you don't buy too much :)
google avatar

Josh T.

Yelp
My mum drags me to Tekka Market every Christmas eve, and there we get everything she needs for all the cooking that happens over the next 48 hours. So take note, this review is regarding the wet market part of Tekka Market, not the hawker side. There're some of the best vegetable/produce sellers I've seen in Singapore. Fresh herbs, vegetables, fruits, everything and anything. There're butchers, (we always end up buying mutton, meat, bones, and marrow), seafood sellers, poultry sellers... I mean, this here is a good and proper wet market, so expect strong smells, wet floors, and things to be a little sticky. But considering I end up going back every year? Trust me when I say it's still pretty worth it.

Christopher B.

Yelp
For the tourist, this place is like a grocery store on steroids. For the local, this is the main square in Little India. Here's the scoop: the top (third) floor has clothes and tailors. Clothes mostly refer to Saris and they definitely are willing to haggle on just about everything! The second floor, IMO, is the place to be. This is where you can get some of the best (and least expensive) Indian food in Singapore. Hawker Stalls are littered everywhere with a ton of Chinese options as well. Drinks stands offer whatever you probably want, including the dreaded Kingfisher (beer is mostly at the Chinese, non-jihad stalls)! Look for the places with long lines! I have found some of the best Chicken Briyani and stuffed parathas in this area. If it's hot, there are certain seating areas where the breeze and people-watching go hand-in-hand. The lower (first) level is where meat market it. Hold your breath, roll up your pants, and hope that your shoes don't stink for eternity as you walk through puddles of who knows what. So, if you want to experience Little India, or if you are simply looking for some good food, come to the Tekka Market and browse the second and third floor and you will probably find what you are looking for!
google avatar

Scott G.

Yelp
Wow, this place has literally anything Indian you want to get, from food to clothes to flowers and fruits and veggies to meat and seafood. It is an experience not to be missed and the food center has some amazing food stalls and upstairs a great little antique stall packed full of really cool items.

Yelp
My new regular hangout: briyani + teh halia has become my regular lunchtime formula as of late! Initially ventured here in search of Teh Halia and this place has since become home to 2 of the best cups of Teh Halia I've ever tasted! Maya Mohan - 2 stalls in Tekka Market, both equally good. The tea was fragrant and flavourful, and they certainly weren't stingy when it came to the ginger essence. In contrast, EVERYTHING else tastes weak and diluted. A must-have at Tekka Market. Get the hot version- the ice just melts way too fast in the cold one, leaving the tea tasting too diluted. AR Rahman - just as nice, though the ginger essence isn't as strong, but otherwise ALMOST as good as Maya Mohan.

Yelp
We were headed to Little India after visiting Chinatown and Maxwell Centre, but briefly stopped by the hawker area. It feels slightly less "upscale" compared to the other hawker centres, but I like the fact that there is a handwashing station right next to the tables. There are plenty of food options here, but we just opted for something quick: prawn noodles and duck and rice. Overall, good and cheap. Next time I visit, I will definitely try the Indian food, as well as explore the ground level food market.
google avatar

Yelp
My favorite hawker center in Singapore. Must try. Find the tandoori guy on the side opposite the MRT station. His Chicken Tikka is sooo good... The hawker centers are the big redeeming factor about Singapore life coming from the US and visiting via Thailand.

Yelp
Lots of options here, although vegetarian is limited... there were veggie places, but just very few of them... tried a few different things from different vendors and everything was fab :-) Great street food, great prices and definitely worth a visit - we'll be going back soon :-)

Yelp
Simply heaven if ur an Indian food lover. You'll feel like u have ADD walking through all the stalls. Amazing varieties from all over India (southern mostly). Naan, roti, dosas, briyani. U really can't go wrong. Some of the best mutton briyani I've ever had and I eat Indian at least 2x a month back in the states. So much to choose from and only one stomach. I'll be back again very soon Tekka...yes I will.

Yelp
3.5 got a quick whampoa prawn noodles with soup to start, love the crunchy pork skin and garlic bits in otherwise simple prep. come here for biryani and other indian dishes. quick egg and onion roti with lamb sauce makes for an inexpensive quick snack

Yelp
Here'a one-stop shop (or market) for your food and clothes need in Little India. There's the coffee shop and wet market on the first floor and the clothes and tailoring on the second floor. I come here usually to get my indian costume and accessories and I'd usually bring friends and family to get theirs too. If you're looking for an affordable sari, punjabi suit or lengha and the accompanying accessories, then the 2nd floor is the only place you need to go! There's also a good range of men's indian costumes here from the casual to the elaborate. I got my sari blouse tailor-made here at one of the tailors for only $28. I also got a punjabi suit for $40 and got it tailored to fit me better just next door to the shop for only $8! The coffee shop downstairs has a good selection of indian food next to the wet market and a row of chinese food on the other side. Final verdict: Great buys for Indian costumes and great stop for your grocery and meal too!

Yelp
While staying in Little India we would swing by here frequently for breakfast and mid-day snacks. The roti prata stall was good and the owners are awesome. Tried a masala dosa, appam with orange sugar, and much more but those were the highlights. Masala dosa was unreal. So good.

Yelp
Tekka Centre is a hawker center in Little India. As you might imagine, it's mostly Indian food. It's delicious and cheap!

Yelp
India Village or Town or whatever it is called is like Chinatown in San Fran, but it is all Indian. Incense wafting through the air, crowded, narrow streets, and in the middle the Tekka Center. Stall 254 has the best prata. I had regular, cheese, and then chocolate. The line tells the story of the quality of food here. Watch the chef work his magic. Love India town Tekka Center. Ginger hot tea in a small glass mug is amazing, which is tea mixed with ginger, honey, and milk. Really good meals for less than 3 dollars. There is a muslim influence on the food as well, so happy to try the different foods. People just sit at your table in front of you when crowded, so be sure to take pictures of the strange looking man staring you down as you sip on your tea, like I did. The only bad part is that the restrooms are disgusting, if you can find one, and you have money to pay for the exclusive ride. Each stall also has a rating for cleanliness. I only stuck to A ratings and there are very few of these, so keep that in mind. Tekka Center is right next to the MRT, so it is easy to get there.

Yelp
I went to three hawkers in Singapore (including the famous Maxwell hawker), but this was by far the most interesting. There were many stalls selling various types of biryani and south Indian dishes. I would recommend getting the fish biryani--they serve it on a banana leaf with different curries and it is truly out of this world!! There were several stalls selling this dish, but just go line up or "queue up," as the Singaporeans say, in the longest queue and you won't be disappointed. Also, try the local drinks, which are very refreshing with your hot meal. This market is also attached to a large wet market so you can walk around when you're doing eating.
