But, eventually, you’ll have to take the party home, and this Friday’s pop-up event at the bar has a few fun things for that. Temperance invited Prospect Heights bakery Der Pioneer to sell their seasonal Christmas stollen on the premises, and you’ll also be able to grab Temperance wine openers, drop stops, and other items you’ll need to enjoy the wines you pair with your stollen. "It can be difficult to decide which wine to order at Temperance when there are more than 100 wines by the glass to choose from. An easier decision is to grab a seat at one of the communal tables along Carmine Street or in the more mellow backyard patio. Indoors or outdoors, the vibe is more relaxed than some stuffier wine bars around town. The friendly sommeliers can offer recommendations to pair with snacks like cacio e pepe cheese puffs, shareable plates of duck meatballs, or sauteed garlic shrimp. "Set to open next month, Joshua James will launch an invite-only nonalcoholic bar for food and beverage professionals. Called Temperance Bar, the space grew out of six months of sobriety and two decades of bartending and will house about 100 different non-alcoholic spirits, mixers, and drinks as a demonstration of what a nonalcoholic bar program could look like. James describes it as a “future speakeasy lounge,” though he hesitates to call it a speakeasy; the bar will be dark and gold and private, with the address kept secret and guests chosen through a communication process (“I’ll pick and choose who comes”). The interior aims for a futuristic theme, balancing NFT art on the walls with natural-edged wood elements, and James even hopes to take blockchain payments to appeal to a future-facing audience.
