"Set to open next month, Joshua James will launch an invite-only nonalcoholic bar for food and beverage professionals. Called Temperance Bar, the space grew out of six months of sobriety and two decades of bartending and will house about 100 different non-alcoholic spirits, mixers, and drinks as a demonstration of what a nonalcoholic bar program could look like. James describes it as a “future speakeasy lounge,” though he hesitates to call it a speakeasy; the bar will be dark and gold and private, with the address kept secret and guests chosen through a communication process (“I’ll pick and choose who comes”). The interior aims for a futuristic theme, balancing NFT art on the walls with natural-edged wood elements, and James even hopes to take blockchain payments to appeal to a future-facing audience. By the end of March the space should be presentable enough to host events, non-alcoholic mixology classes, and video shoots tied to his YouTube channel Josh The Non Alcoholic, with the intent of bringing craft-cocktail professionals into the sober/nonalcoholic world." - Paolo Bicchieri
