This bright café serves up exceptional Burmese fare, from mouthwatering curries to fresh salads, all in a chill vibe that's perfect for groups.
"Up the street from Burma Superstar is Teni East Kitchen. The Burmese restaurant in North Oakland is a can-do-everything spot. It’s ideal for walking in with a group, and you can easily get a table. The noodles, soups, and curries are rich, spicy, and beautifully seasoned (and there are lots of gluten-free and vegan options to choose from). The creative cocktails—we like the Kiki’s Delivery with mezcal and elderflower liqueur—will make you want to keep the conversation going until closing. Ask us where we’re headed for a dinner that hits the sweet spot between casual and sophisticated, and it’s Teni East Kitchen everytime." - lani conway, julia chen 1

"California takes on traditional Burmese dishes star at this Temescal gem." - Dianne de Guzman, Clair Lorell, Paolo Bicchieri
"Burmese food with a California spin is on the menu at Chef/owner Tiyo Shibabaw’s cheery spot in Temescal, where the tea leaf salads come with kale and there’s plenty of flaky, golden roti bread to go around. Everything is affordable here, but the lunchtime specials are an especially good deal: a hot and flavorful entrée (like spicy coconut curry chicken with rice noodles) and a fresh salad—go for the pea shoots topped with radishes and fried garlic in a turmeric dressing. Bright and airy, with exposed wooden beams on the ceiling, Teni draws a crowd of hipsters of all ages. Its dining room can certainly fill up fast at prime hours, but it’s worth the wait for food that’s fresh, flavorful, unfussy and generously portioned." - Michelin Inspector
"Chef-owner Tiyo Shibabaw infuses California into her bright Burmese restaurant, with baby kale in the tea leaf salad and a sense of seasonal vibrancy throughout the menu. The refreshing pea shoot salad is deservingly popular, but the crispy catfish, curries, and noodles are all winners, too." - Eater Staff
