"I step up a couple of weathered wooden stairs into the buzzy warmth of this neighborhood barbecue spot and find a polished concrete bar and a small dining room where Chef Wilson Rothschild serves house-smoked meats and Southwest–Mex–Caribbean dishes: deviled eggs with house-smoked scallops, green olives, and chile oil; smoked bluefish tostadas; guajillo-glazed smoked pork ribs; brisket burnt ends with coffee-agave barbecue sauce; haddock cakes with spicy aioli; and sides like slow-cooked rosado beans with pork belly or honey-buttered, jalapeño cornbread—even breakfast tacos piled with black beans, crispy potatoes, scrambled eggs, avocado, and house-made spicy salsa roja." - Alexandra Hall

"The outdoor dining setup makes this “boutique barbecue” restaurant a worthy destination in Portland’s East End. With a menu of house-smoked meats and dishes with Caribbean flair, Terlingua has something for everyone (including vegetarians). A solid craft beer and tequila selection ties it all together." - Kate McCarty

"Delectably smoky meats and killer tacos The vibe Good fun, serious eats The crowd Smoked meat lovers of all ages The drinks Gutsy, refreshing, and generous The food Rich, smoky deliciousness" - Mindy Fox

"Texas BBQ may not be the first thing you think you want when you go to the Northernmost part of the United States, but Terlingua might just change that. Think Tex-Mex inspired items made with Maine ingredients, like a rotating ceviche or brisket with homemade tortillas and a decent mezcal, wine, and beer list. Their open-air deck and margarita garden are warmly welcoming (literally with their heat lamps) and large enough for relaxing or for kids to roam free. You can also just drop into their adjacent market to purchase house-smoked meats and locally-made products like blankets and baskets to remember that Vacationland feeling." - Alana Dao

"Terlingua has been doing BBQ and Tex-Mex on Washington Avenue — one of the city’s more happening streets — since 2015. The restaurant moved into a larger space in 2019, and got a larger outdoor dining setup in the process, too. The patio and deck at Terlingua is the perfect setting for dining on brisket, ribs, queso, and the restaurant’s daily BBQ board. Diners can also grab food to-go from its new market to recreate the Terlingua experience at home — or at the beach. Terlingua is open for outdoor dining (reserve here) and takeout." - Briana Volk
