Best Bagels in New York City, According to Eater Editors | Eater NY

"This bagel shop sandwiched between Prospect Park and Green-Wood Cemetery, ensconced in a double storefront, produces one of the city’s broadest range of bagel flavors and a correspondingly large array of cream cheeses. One of our favorites is the egg everything bagel; another is the cinnamon raisin bagel." - Robert Sietsema

The 19 Best Bagels In New York City, Ranked - New York - The Infatuation

"This shop in Windsor Terrace makes the kind of fluffy, flavorful bagel that New York ex-pats dream about after they’ve moved away. There’s nothing too cool or overly fussy about it, and that’s exactly what makes them special. The flavors here are pretty traditional and our favorite pairings are the blueberry with strawberry cream cheese, which tastes like eating a bag of Starburst candy for breakfast, and the pumpernickel with olive pimento cream cheese when we’re in a more savory mood." - bryan kim, will hartman, willa moore, neha talreja, molly fitzpatrick, sonal shah

I’ve been coming to Terrace Bagel since I was a kid. Used to hang out there late talking and eating with friends in junior high. I’d usually defend them to the death but today was the straw. So insanely priced now, it closes early, quality of the bagel went down, the cool decorations are gone, and then on top of paying my soul and then some for a bagel, they can’t even cut the thing down the middle😭I really don’t want this place to close. I remember when it was just a place you could walk into, no seats before they renovated. Used to have the best black and white cookies anywhere in town, now I don’t even see them on the menu often and then they also have the the option to tip 30% on their iPad? 30% tip on a $22 dollar bagel? Why. I really hope they can sort out whatevers going on because I’m sick of wishing I’d picked a different bagel joint. Please yuppies don’t take our beloved Terrace Bagels

Google
I went to Terrace Bagels in November of 2024. I am currently dreaming of a French toast bagel with whatever cream cheese I got, it's currently 9:15pm and it's all I'm thinking about. 10/10 would recommend. Terrace Bagels, if you're seeing this please ship me some bagels and cream cheese. I am your biggest fan! Definitely planning another NY trip in my future and I will be eating at Terrace Bagels every morning.

Google
I’ve been going around the city ordering the same bagel at different spots (bacon, egg and cheese with hash browns), and this spot definitely had one of the better ones — my second favorite, actually. The eggs were completely overcooked and rubbery, but aside from that it was perfect. The prices were really fair, too. Thanks Terrace Bagels!

Google
I love this place. It has the best bagels from whole wheat bagels to pumpernickel bagel! So fresh and plump (as my husband likes to say lol). My go to are the lox bagel and white fish salad. It’s out of this world. If you want to try both get the split decision which comes with lox on one side of the bagel and whitefish on the other. Aside from bagels, they also have plenty of options for sandwiches and salads/coffee and cold drinks. I’ve also had egg salad and shrimp salad and they were also pretty good. Lines are long in the mornings and there is only a s all seating area; seats are mostly full but there’s a sitting area just half a block away where you can sit and enjoy close to Prospect Park (just be aware of bird poop) Staff if pretty nice and quick with their service. I do think items are on the pricier side but it’s New York City and you’re also paying for quality. For 2 bagels (if we’re going with lox and whitefish)and 2 small coffees, we are paying close to $40 including tip but it is worth it. Sodas and Snapple’s are around $3-$4 per bottle depending on what you are getting.

Google
Quality has long gone down - everything bagels taste soapy. Furthermore, I don’t think I’ve ever placed an order here and have had it correct. Chicken salad - nope, here’s egg salad. Untoasted? Nope they roasted it. Scallion cream cheese? Nope, here’s plain. As someone who has lived in the area for awhile I remember when this was excellent but that chapter has since long ended.

Google
The bagels are very good. I enjoyed Ed their egg bagel and would recommend this place. There is roo. To sit and eat. Coffee with all the flavors and choices in a warm cozy environment. Place gets busy and you have to wait for a table to sit. The slammer sandwich is delicious and filling. I would recommend adding bacon to it. The cousin Vinny sandwich was very delicious.

Alexis Kim

Google
Every time I order and try out new sandwiches it does not disappoint. Everything tastes so good and they do not cheap out on the portions. Great quality food.

Karla Cecilia

Google
You will find a thousand options of bagels. From the type of bread to the ingredients. I spent $9.51 and came out really satisfied. I loved that they have a whole coffee bar so you can prepare it the way you like. It is a busy place but you will most likely find a place to sit. Although, being two minutes from Prospect Park, you could also order to take away and enjoy it with a view.

Yelp
Windsor Terrace Bagels is my GO TO spot for the areas choice bagels without a doubt. Before they were recently recognized by the NYT as one of the city's top 25 bagel joints - it has always been a consistent place for bagel sandwiches of all kinds! I always get the turkey Swiss and tomato on a toasted everything egg bagel and never dissappoints! They have fresh bagels always and the line moves fast and swiftly !

Yelp
Literally the best bagels in the New York. Everyone who says otherwise has likely had their tastebuds sandpapered off. Incredible taste & great experience. 10/10.

Yelp
I've been going to Terrace for years because their bagels are just really really good. Usually get half dozen and half pound of scallion cream cheese. I've also had them delivered and the bagels have always been fresh and warm. There's only one other place that rivals them but I haven't been on that side of Brooklyn in a minute and Terrace is much closer.

Yelp
I love this place it does get crowded on weekends and it's not the best bagel I've ever had but customer service is great and I love the location.

Justin G.

Yelp
Hadn't been back to my old neighborhood in many years. Needed to bring some bagels to a meeting not far away, and picked up a dozen. Sad to say, while the bagels looked amazing - the taste was just not great. I even tried 2 flavors and both were very bland.
google avatar

Vijay S.

Yelp
Amazing bagels! We came here on a Sunday around 8 am, and it was busy! We got a few different bagels with plain and veggie cream cheese. Their veggie cream cheese is delicious! I don't prefer the large amounts of cream cheese used, but it's just my preference. I would def recommend coming here if you're in the area.

Yelp
This place was....meh. To summarize, do not go here if you're looking for a real New York bagel. The bagel itself was not very flavorful, just tasted like normal bread. And the texture was just...wrong. It was bready (it had a bit of chew, but not nearly as much as an authentic NY bagel should have), and the crust was thin and lacked the classic bagel craggles. Honestly, almost all of the crunch from the crust came from toasting the bagel, not from boiling/baking it correctly. Also, I got an everything bagel, but one side was basically completely devoid of any seasoning at all. The ambiance of the place was so-so, it looks like a deli. Not really great seating options. The staff was friendly enough, but nothing remarkably good nor bad about the service.
google avatar

Yelp
I stopped early on Saturday morning for a plain bagel toasted with cream cheese($4.15). The bagel was good, and it had a large amount of cream cheese, which I liked. The place had a good crowd, but the service was fast.

Erick H.

Yelp
really nice ambiance, bagels are huge and filling. service is quick. Self serve coffee is super nice

Michael Q.

Yelp
This bagel store is OK, the bagels are fresh but they get my order wrong multiple times, also they burned my bagel alot But other then that the place is quick and convenient Tasteful food!

Rick R.

Yelp
It was 2:50 and they close at 4:00. I ordered a Monte Cristo, however, they had already shut down their grill . Not good for business being as they are a sandwich shop.

Tucker S.

Yelp
Unbelievable experience. Bagels were fresh and toasty and scrumptious. Mozzarella was fresh and exploding with flavor. People in there were top tier. Just generally chads. Will visit again 100%. Study family.
google avatar

Emily K.

Yelp
I came here on a Saturday afternoon. I got a dozen bagels through the TGTG app. 5 blueberry, 3 cinnamon raisin, 3 egg, and 1 garlic bagel. The blueberry are definitely my favorite. They have a nice blueberry flavor and are light. The cinnamon raisin are my second favorite. A little denser but also good. Anyway, a solid bagel place.

PawPrints B.

Yelp
I wonder why food at this place is double the price of similar neighborhood places? That's not inflation - it's price gouging. Food is fine, which is why they got 2 stars vs. 1, but I won't pay their prices again.
google avatar

Jessie H.

Yelp
This is the best bagel store in the neighborhood by far. They're a few blocks from me so I'm there (or getting delivery) at least once a week. My go-to is a toasted bacon egg and cheese with cheddar instead of American (American cheese is so bad, guys. Why do you subject yourselves to this trash?!) and tomato. And a small iced cold brew. They used to mess up my order sometimes (didn't use cheddar, forgot the tomato etc.) but now I clearly (and politely) explain all the things I want in the comments and I haven't had an issue since. The bagels are the best I've had in Brooklyn and freeze really, really well so I usually have a few handy for a quick breakfast. I also really enjoy their cold brew, although it's very, very pricey. Delivery guys are always nice and quick!

Yelp
Such a great bagel spot! So glad this is only a short walk from my apartment! Egg everything with scallion cream cheese is my go-to! They also have a great self serve coffee and iced tea station. Don't miss the chicken Caesar wrap on a spinach wrap, by far the best in park slope, not drowned in dressing, plenty of flavorful chicken, giant crunchy croutons!
google avatar

Heather B.

Yelp
Love these bagels! They have the perfect texture. Not too dense and cakey but instead the right amount of chewy. They are also enormous--actually more than I can eat so it's possible to share. The home made cream cheeses are also delicious. Friendly, laidback staff. Shop is clean and well lit and conveniently located. Definitely one of my favorite NYC bagels.
google avatar

Isabel C.

Yelp
Good and fast service I got a poppy seed bagel with turkey, cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomatoes. The bagel it self taste really good. Would go back again to try a different bagel.

Yelp
Okay this place is cool but management is poor. I come in and this guy is working on people's food and is so loud. Getting staffs attention by needing to tell everyone about his story about Spanish Harlem and 116th street. Eventually while making someone's sandwich, he proceeds to pull his mask down laughing to tell the story with spittle flying out his mouth and towards the food I immediately complained to the cashier and they went over and whispered something to him, and he starts laughing. Fast forward to me trying to get my cappuccino and the machine isn't working. Staff tries to get a manager and for 8 mins I stand there. Finally I ask for the manager, and low and behold, it's the maskless spitter. I remark about me waiting for so long while he shares personal stories and of course he laughs Turns out the cappuccino machine isn't working because "this piece needs to be cleaned." So at 10:33am, this machine is on and hasn't been cleaned?? Got it. Won't be returning.

Yelp
Decent bagels . I ordered a turkey swiss and bacon on a bagel. It was good no complaints. They got part of my order wrong but I will still go back. The prices are decent. I actually give them 3.5 stars.

Yelp
Bagel loyalties. Ask any New Yorker and they've got a list of the best (and only) places to buy a bagel in their neighborhoods. I used to live a few doors down from Terrace Bagels, so location definitely plays a huge role in my decision. But the number one reason why Terrace Bagels is the number one place in my heart to buy a good ol' boiled and baked bagel? You can spy the humble Terrace Bagels storefront in the background of Alanis Morissette's music video for her 1995 hit "Hand in My Pocket." (She's cruising down Prospect Park West in a parade procession and you can see Terrace Bagels at least twice. Even Alanis knew back then that this place is a Windsor Terrace institution.) Your bagel (or in my case, the delicious Red Bank breakfast wrap with egg, grilled chicken, grilled veggies, and Swiss cheese that I eat at all hours of the day) has 90s music cred.

Christopher H.

Yelp
Been a long time loyal customer, so I was stunned to have my bagel and lox delivered with lox that was obviously spoiled. It was dark in color and had a granular taste. So disappointed. Very leery, for obvious reasons, to order from there again.
google avatar

Tory C.

Yelp
While the bagels were good, they did not include enough cream cheese and they were a bit overpriced all things considered. However bagel itself was a 4/5! If you're in Brooklyn not a bad spot and no line or wait
google avatar

Ethan C.

Yelp
Never seen a place that sells such simple stuff screw it up over and over again. The food is good, as a result we frequently order from here, and just hope for the best. But after multiple incidents of them getting the order wrong or failing to deliver it entirely, we just can't even. One time they even delivered the same order to us twice, with two different delivery guys, 15m apart, and one bagel sandwich was wrong in each set, so between the two duplicates we actually got a complete order... because that's how disorganized and sloppy these guys are at running the operation. Go there in person. Order delivery at your own risk.

Paul B.

Yelp
Love their bacon/egg/cheese flat everything bagel! Bagel had the right chew, and it came loaded with bacon! It's definitely a local bkyn fav!

Deb M.

Yelp
Awesome! Best bagels ever!!! Service great too. Cream cheese luscious. So yummy and delicious. Literally the most delicious bagels in the world!!
google avatar

Cory B.

Yelp
This is a fantastic spot to get bagels for the office. They have a great mix of bagels and offer some rarer varieties like blueberry. Even if you get a bakers dozen there will still will be some bagels types you won't get. They also offer a good variety of cream cheeses with some rare selections as well (their blueberry cream cheese pairs well with their blueberry bagels.) The bagels here are quite chewy, large and airy. I think that both the qualities of the bagels and cream cheese are fantastic and you can get a lot of good combinations together. The prices are pretty good as well. As I said before this is a good place to hop in and get a dozen or so bagels for a special group occasion or office event. Its close to the G/F lines and the service hear is relatively quick. The place is pretty popular but the line you have to wait in goes by pretty fast. Overall this is a fantastic bagel place and I highly recommend coming here for quality bagels on your way into the city.

Yelp
Fresh, authentic New York bagels. When I take a night in to these beauties, I naturally close my eyes to appreciate all that is a New York bagel! We ordered a turkey club on a bagel and it was amazing! We also ordered a bacon, egg and cheese on a roll and that was great. The hazelnut iced coffee was fresh and delicious. There is no doubt in my mind that Terrace Bagels is my favorite bagel place ever.
google avatar

Jason R.

Yelp
Terrace Bagels isn't your average bagel shop, it's more along the lines of a gourmet market that sells bagels. I dropped by looking for a couple bagels and cheese. As it was my first time here, I scoured the place and noticed how large the space was. It reminds me of the La Bagel Delight on 7th Avenue, but without the clutter, and unfortunately, not as good a bagel. I ordered a buttered bagel for my daughter, two everything bagels and some Swiss cheese. The whole time I was waiting for my order, I couldn't take my eyes off the cakes and pies near the register-- that Apple Crumb was really calling my name, I sadly opted to forgo the cake because I've missed the gym all week. The service was prompt, the location was large, had seating, various options, but the reason for the three star rating, is the bagels simply weren't good. They tasted like day olds from The Bagel Hole, no knock on the Bagel Hole, you know full well what you're buying when you get day olds. Except, in this instance, they were supposed to be fresh bagels. I will certainly come again for the apple crumb, and maybe try them earlier in the day for a re-do of their bagels. Hopefully I'll have a better experience next time.

Yelp
When I lived in this area years ago, it used to be so good. I went in today and it was depressing. I got a whole wheat everything bagel sandwich and the bagel was more like a "nothing" (see photo). I was going to get a coffee, but for some reason they're now charging $4 for a small, which is even smaller of a cup size than it used to be (the guy told me it just went up). You're not a fancy coffeeshop, so I don't know what that's about. Cold regular coffee doesn't cost that much and it's obnoxious to try to rip people off like that. Looks like this place went from a nice old neighborhood standby to an overpriced trying-to-be-trendy joint. And on top of it when I went to eat my sandwich it was just... slimy and unflavorful. What a bummer. Things have definitely changed recently! (Not to mention I was charged for more than double what I ordered, and the register guy couldn't even figure out my refund so he told me he did part on my card but gave me part cash. I don't really believe that so I'm pissed about this. An actual refund would be nice, if anyone's actually paying attention to this...)
google avatar

Yelp
I never thought much of bagels; they seemed pretty bland and chewy wherever I had them, I guess I thought I didn't like them. Now, I visited NY for the weekend and my brother took me to this place saying they had THE best bagels. Having tried few places in Wisconsin, I wasn't excited... but oh my! I love bagels!!!!!

Richard P.

Yelp
Just had the worst experience ordered two bagels one strawberry cream cheese and a butter and jelly. I feel so disrespected as a paying customer I don't know if I looked stupid to them or they wanted to play games but they picked the wrong one they legit put strawberry chunks and shredded cheese into a bagel. I useto love going there today was my last day I will be going to la bagel delight on 7th Ave from now on.

Yelp
FANTASTIC spot to grab a breakfast. The quality of food and the cheerful service by the staff is so good that I walk from the other side of the park! Before COVID pandemic I rarely went to this area, but my morning walks/run/cycle let me stumble across this gem, and now I am hooked! You can tell management takes care of their staff because they all have smiles and willing to go the extra mile for the customers. Splendid job, no wonder this is a neighborhood staple! My go-to sandwich is the lox/capers/tomato/onions/bagel and the bagels are always fresh along with the fish. Keep up the good work!
google avatar

Yelp
It's a place I've gone to for years. Definitely a bit pricy but quality foods and assortments.

Yelp
I had kept seeing this place packed on Saturday and Sunday mornings. I had a strange work schedule on a Thursday, a meeting later in the afternoon which meant my morning was free. I've had intense bagel cravings these past few days... so as soon as my eyes opened I pictured a fluffy bagel with cream cheese and tomatoes. Long story short, I looked like such an idiot trying to find the door to this place. The door is to the left under the Terrace Bagels sign. I can't be the only one who thinks it's misleading with the Boards Head logo on the door? Looking like an idiot was worth it ftb (for the bagel). The bagel was really good. It completely satisfied my craving. I got whole wheat with cream cheese and tomatoes, my usual. The bagel was toasted slightly with a crunchy outer shell and a fluffy, doughy inside. What more could you ask from a bagel? There was quite a lot of cream cheese that I ended up wiping but I guess that's how you New Yorkers do it. I'm learning. The iced coffee is self-serve which I actually really enjoy. You can control your exact milk-to-coffee ratio unlike at most places. It tasted fresh. Probably about 10 tables for an eat and go deal. Be respectful of the time you're sitting, even as the sign says so. I can't wait to be back.
google avatar

Vincent R.

Yelp
Terrace bagels is never consistent. From the quality of the bagel to the service, I've never been able to leave here 100% happy, most of the time there is something that leaves you with a bad taste in your mouth. Both literally and figuratively. I stopped by on August 18 2018 and was given a poor excuse for a poppy seed bagel with cream cheese. I could probably fit all the cream cheese they gave me on a single teaspoon, not tablespoon - teaspoon. And I could probably count all the poppy seeds (which are only on a single side of the bagel, not both) in probably less than a single tea spoon as well. Any respectable bagel serves their seeds on the bottom as well as the top. The iced coffee was definitely yesterday's burnt hot coffee, it is pretty much undrinkable unless you cut it with tons of sugar. At least they have liquid sugar here. In terms of service, I asked for an iced coffee in my own container, which some places usually are kind enough to charge you a smaller size since you are costing their business one less plastic cup they need to purchase. I was looked at by the cashier, she gave my container a double take and changed her price to charge me from a small to a large. She was complaining about something to another coworker (I think a child who was crying on line with her mother), and threw the pen down on the counter for me to sign the receipt. I've attached photos for this sad excuse for a bagel. I think the only reason people go here is because it's one of the few proper bagel spots in the area with decent seating.

Yelp
EATS: Build your own omelette, hash browns, whole wheat everything bagel, Turkey sausage *Ordered via Doordash Everything came correct which is huge from a bagel shop on a weekend morning. I thought the prices were reasonable. Everything tasted great -- I'll definitely be adding this place into my weekend line up!
google avatar

Adriana E.

Yelp
This place is great! I used to walk by it all the time but now during covid I started ordering breakfast bagels for delivery some weekends. Best bagels in the neighborhood and so much selection! Regular, whole wheat, mini, flat, etc. Delivery is usually really quick too. I still have never stepped inside the place (some day!) but I still kinda feel like a regular. They also have an extensive selection of pastries, sandwiches, and other breakfast goodies. I can vouch for the bagels, pancakes, and bfast sandwiches all being delicious. I plan to branch out and try their deli sandwiches and salads in the future bc I love supporting this local Brooklyn business.
google avatar

Ian C.

Yelp
Trash. I truly do not understand how a place like this stays in business. Bagel is chewy, order is late and incorrect. Hashbrown worse than mcdonalds. "Cheese fries" were recommended on the menu. One slice of american cheese congealed on soggy fries. Its not cool. It 's disgusting. How dare you charge people hard earned money for this? Sad.

W C.

Yelp
Ok neighborhood bagel/sandwich spot. Gets crowded during the weekend with the line going out the door.
google avatar

Brian M.

Yelp
I was born in NYC but came back on a trip looking for that perfect Deli experience I remember from my youth. Terrace Bagels was it! The food is al wonderful and you get service that is friendly with a bit of NYC attitude to boot. The bagels are wonderful and the add-ons are just as good. I thought the staff was very good about COVID compliance even though it was busy. i'd go back each time I'm in town. Everyone enjoyed it and sitting on the curb allowed us to see all the locals.
google avatar

Kenneth B.

Yelp
I am not sure what happened here. When I lived in the neighborhood this was my "go to place" for great sandwiches before I brought friends to Prospect Park. Recently I went there and my order was all screwed up. Regretfully I didn't know that until I opened my bag. Just a quick hint. Check your food before you leave the shop. I was very disappointed.
google avatar

Sabrina S.

Yelp
Stopped in for some bagels during my coronavirus excursion to the park and was very disappointed. I ordered a pastrami avocado and Muenster bagel (don't say it's weird) and the guy suggests lettuce too so I'm like sure why not. Charges me out the covid for the avocado and once I'm years away in the park I see there's NO avocado or lettuce. But a mountain of greasy, fatty HOT pastrami when I asked for it cold. Also the bagels were very bad, I only noticed what they looked like behind the register after I ordered, definitely "hand rolled". All in all disgusting bagel and a waste of money.
google avatar

Dayna R.

Yelp
I never thought there could be such a thing as too much cream cheese, however Terrace proved me wrong. In a 2 day trip I managed to go here twice. Day 1 I got plain cream cheese on everything, and the cream cheese was at least an inch thick, but delicious nonetheless. Day 2 I spiced things up a bit and got a whole wheat everything bagel with light sundried tomato cream cheese and bacon. It was delicious and so much flavor. They did not skimp on the bacon either! It's a good thing this place is not clsoer or I would be here daily.
google avatar

Rudy M.

Yelp
I was at Terrace Bagels today and ordered an everything bagel and an egg and cheese on a roll and both the bagel and the roll were underbaked and a little raw in the middle. Sadly, I didn't discover this until I got home, so didn't have the energy to go back out in the snow to replace it, but I'm disappointed that I paid a premium price for low-grade food. :(
google avatar

Ethan S.

Yelp
Ordered food but like always my coffee comes 3/4 filled or half like someone drank the other half. Food good coffee always bad
google avatar

Michael B.

Yelp
Most days this place is good. Today I ordered a sandwich without onions. Got home - it's pretty much an onion sandwich. Grill onions, too, so they had to make an effort to get it wrong. This place isn't cheap. The sandwich was $12 plus tip. For that price they should make more of an effort to get it right.

Yelp
Not sure if they were having an off day, but my wife and I have been going here for 5 years or so when I used to live in the neighborhood. The bagel & egg sandwiches we ordered for were pitiful. The toaster was broken. We both asked for avocado and were charged for it, but mine didn't have any and hers had like less than a quarters worth of avocado in it. The eggs looked sad and the bagel seemed smaller than I remember. Also the dining area was an absolute mess. None of the tables were clean and the floor crunched with garbage, straws and sugar. The garbage was overflowing. It was 1pm on a Saturday. We recently redeemed our experience at a Bagel Pub.

Jennifer P.

Yelp
These are some of my favorite NYC bagels - always fresh and huge. Huge selection of salads and toppings, and the guys that work there are super nice. Plenty of seats and you can make your coffee and sit down. Whenever we have guests in town, this is where we grab bagels for them.
