The Best Burritos in Phoenix, Arizona | Eater Phoenix

"Testal specializes in Chihuahua-style burritos — slender, open-ended, and wrapped in delicate, homemade flour tortillas with golden flecks from the comal. The chile relleno version features a roasted poblano stuffed with molten cheese, dipped in egg batter, and fried until just set, then bundled with creamy beans inside one of those supple tortillas. It’s rich, soft, and deeply comforting. These burritos are smaller than most in Phoenix, which just means it’s easier to justify ordering two. The aguas frescas lineup veers refreshingly off-script, too, with options like pinole, made from roasted ground corn and oat milk, and iskiate, a tart chia-lime blend sweetened with agave." - McConnell Quinn

Phoenix’s Best Mexican Restaurants | Eater Phoenix

"Located just up the street from Bacanora, tiny Testal is named for the doughball that becomes a tortilla, and, indeed, tortillas are made fresh daily here, to be used as wrappers for messy, open-ended burritos, made the traditional Chihuahuan way. Try these two classics of the state: comforting deshebrada (shredded beef and potatoes) and chicharron (spicy, softened pork rind in salsa verde with pinto beans). Then wash everything down with an agua fresca many diners likely have never run into before — refreshing Iskiate, composed of chia seeds, lime juice, and agave nectar." - McConnell Quinn

We came here on a last minute recommendation, it is a smaller space with limited seating. As we walked in we saw this tortilla pocket that looked amazing. We knew right away this was a good idea. We asked about it and the friendly girl at the counter explained it is the Gordita, limited availability. We ordered one. It came out pretty quick and it was amazing. A little spicy but we were able to handle it. I can’t wait to go back and explore more of their menu.

Google
I would've given 5 stars for the food however, after a year of going and loving the picadillo burritos here....today I must admit it was not the best. The picadillo tasted burnt and not as good as it always does. I took a piece of the burnt area out of my burrito cause it was one of the darkest ones in there. Unfortunately, after walking over there from my studio I did not feel like walking back and complaining. Other than that the service is great, the people behind the counter are nice and welcoming and the atmosphere has a nice feel to it. Not sure if I will be back anytime soon.

Google
SUPER yummy Chihuahuan cuisine - messy, open-ended thin burritos in oodles of flavors! All tortillas are fresh and damn, so good. Really wide selection of vegan offerings too, which is hard to find in Mexican cuisine!

Google
Decent tacos and burritos along Grand Avenue. Karaoke on some nights. Nice and friendly staff. Outdoor patio seating is nice.

Google
I tried the vegan colorado bowl. It was alright, and we ate it, but it’s not very healthy and does not look appetizing at all. It’s nice when vegan dishes include some color 🥦

Google
Food is amazing. Has a solid vegan menu. Cocktails are delicious as well. Many Cocktails are made with sotol

On a business trip, I was in Phoenix for 3 days and always looking for a great place to eat. Testal is by far, a restaurant to enjoy. I seriously cannot g8ve them enough kudos! Thank you for the experience and education on your food and drink from Chihuahua! You are all phenomenal!

Google
Unbelievably good Mexican food. Honestly one of the if not THE best burritos I've ever had. The shredded bead was so soft and perfectly spicy (extra spice is available though!). The flavours were perfect. Really loved it here. Staff were also really friendly and quick.

Yelp
This place was unbelievable!!!! I started with a strawberry piña colada style cocktail that was flavorful, light and totally refreshed me in the 113 degree heat. I followed that up with some of the most divine adobada I've ever had in a taco. Then I tried the birria burrito which blew my socks off and the chicharron burrito which was almost like if a bean burrito and a chili relleno made a love child. Not only will I be back, but I will bring everyone I know. God bless Testal!!!

Yelp
It has meat (protein), vegetables (salsa and guacamole), and gluten free (corn tortillas ) Eating a taco is good for you!! Testal's tacos are so good! I love how they season and cook their asada and their tortillas don't hurt my stomach, which is a huge win for me!

Yelp
Tucked away in a cute plaza with ample parking along Grand Avenue. This place was clean and inviting. Convenient electronic menu boards located at the entrance making the ordering process easy. Food was traditional Mexican fare. Chips were salty and had lots of crunch. Burritos were excellent and the carne asada was tender and flavorful. Great visit and the owner was behind the counter. I would return.

Yelp
Came here for a quick lunch and it was delicious. It's a small place, but there are several indoor tables and a little bar. There's a large mirror on the wall, and some shelves with some Mexican items on them. There is also a patio with a DJ. That could be a lot of fun when it's not so hot outside. You order at the counter and get a beeper to let you know when your food is ready. We had a couple of margaritas, a red chili burrito with potatoes, and carne asada tacos, birria tacos, and carne adovada tacos. All were absolutely delicious! There is a little fridge where you can grab bottles of red and green hot sauce. This is a great little place with great food at great prices. Definitely recommend.

Yelp
Service was super friendly, they went out of their way to clear our dishes, and were very smiley! Atmosphere was great for counter order, and both inside and patio dining. Very clean. We each had a beer & split a $6 burrito. Yes, 6 bucks. It was mean't to be a quick appetizer during our bike ride. I must start with the fact that I'm not an expert on "Northern" Mexico cuisine... in comparison to other regions of Mexico. Our burrito was pork & potato. Very little meat & the potato was too mushy. The spices were ok, but the baby food texture was not appealing to us. Having said that, other diners seemed to enjoy their orders, and people had previously recommended this place. I would return & try a different item.

Yelp
If you like real damn good Mexican food then don't miss this spot. Order two burritos if you're hungry as they're small and too delicious to have just one.
google avatar

Yelp
One of my new favorite spots! Most tasty and fresh burritos. The Abobada burrito is my legit fav! I add cheese and omg it's the literal BEST! I get straight up cravings for it. The inside has a cute vibe and the staff is always friendly and service is great!! Highly recommend!! Hope it never changes

Yelp
Amazing burritos and tacos at an unbelievably low price, Testal is one of the best spots in Phoenix for take out, lunch, or a date night. They have flavorful salsas and a welcoming staff. I've previously spotted Mayor Gallego and her staff - it's a quality spot!
google avatar

Judy L.

Yelp
I just finished getting my tattoo with Ms. Cathy at Kowloon Tattoo in this plaza. I was hungry and this walking distance plus highly recommended! Of course, I love tacos. I told the staff it was my first time here and she said I need to get the Birria tacos (3 Delicious slow-cooked beef stew tacos served with consome). Sold! This place is cute, simple, and enough seating inside and outside. Consome is their "soup" that your beef tacos are dipped in. I could bathe and consome! Yes, it is THAT good. I need to come back for more items to try.
google avatar

Yelp
Food was good. They were out of the hibiscus drink and called for substitute. I door dashed and was not there. All communication was online and I did not go there. I cannot give you an accurate view of the ambience
google avatar

Yelp
We got the Colorado burritos, two asada tacos and a margarita and all of it was amazing! Food is chihuahua style so don't expect huge burritos but they are still very filling. Place isn't huge but they had ample seating, you also order first before you sit down. Excited to return back and try some more food items!

Yelp
Aside from the thrown-together Vegan Taco, the food offering, prices & atmosphere is nice. A fast-casual concept offering Chihuahuan-style food & drinks - a good presence of Veggie/Vegan options. After you place your order you can sit down in the various areas or watch your food being made in their open kitchen. The enclosed patio is spacious with an outdoor service station & misters/heaters - imagine the latter. We came here around 7:30P on a Friday & saw a DJ set up. The eatery highlights their culture with staple foods & indigenous artwork/decor. I'd be back the next time I'm in town for a sit-down experience.

Yelp
Hands down the best burritos I've ever had! If you haven't tried the chicharrón burrito with verde salsa, you're seriously missing out. The pork is tender, and the green salsa adds the perfect kick without overpowering the flavor. Everything tastes fresh, homemade, and full of flavor. This spot has officially ruined other burritos for me--in the best way. Highly recommend!

Brianna T.

Yelp
I ordered the desebrada bowl, you get about a tbsp of meat and the rest beans. 2 stars for the taste but don't cheap out on the meat. Wish I would have read the reviews before ordering.

Yelp
Love this restaurant! Not fancy but food is terrific. The chile Colorado burrito reminds me of food and my childhood in Southern NM.
google avatar

Yelp
4.5 carne asada burrito 4 birria tacos - def not the best I've had I'd get the carne asada burrito again - the meat was good! I'd be interested in coming back for the breakfast burritos too

Jared L.

Yelp
Was so delicious and great service the tacos were delicious and lots of meat and. Delicious margaritas

Yelp
Back for another first Friday and the vibes are IMMACULATE. DJ on the patio. Karaoke inside. Food is amazing and everyone is dancing at least a little bit. Can't stop won't stop coming here

Yelp
Oh my gosh!! This place is phenomenal I will drive from North Phoenix or from Chandler for a bean and cheese burrito. It reminds me of the burritos my mom would make. The chicharrón burrito is actually really delicious. My daughters are vegan and they enjoy the bean and cheese burritos and the chile relleno. Even the vegan food is delicious This place is great because we can all eat as a family. The atmosphere is great. I've only seen mostly adults and not any kids. Saturday they've had live music. The service is great and the salsa they give you is yummy too. It's a great place to visit and eat. I totally recommend this place!

Yelp
We found this place through an event at Pueblo just down Grand Ave and I'm so glad we did!! This Mexican food might be different than most are used to but holy smokes is it AMAZING!!! Tastes like homemade goodness. Apparently they do karaoke on Friday, which we will DEFINITELY be back for. Great ambiance, great food. Hot sauce was also on point
google avatar

Yelp
Good tacos, tons of meat in each taco. Their iskiate drink was delicious, have never tried anything like it before.

Yelp
Great environment, great food will be back! Little hole in the wall place! With great environment and service that is top notch.

Yelp
Again, the Arizona Republic brought me here. I kept a list of their 25 best burritos in all of Arizona. I came here to sample the rajas burrito. Pulling up, it's kind of hard to see that the place is here. There's not really a big sign out in the street at all. But basically you just park in the big fenced area and there is a motel and a bunch of other businesses that share the parking lot. Walking in, there's a cute bar and sitting area and overall a very welcoming atmosphere. You order at the counter and everything was really cheap. So I tried the Rajas as well as their birria burritos. They don't close them at the ends which apparently is a regional tradition. Anyway, the birria was really good! Very juicy and runny but full of good flavor. And then the rajas. Wow! It was just peppers and onions but they were stewed and flavored so well. It was like a vegetarian delight! Can't say enough good about this place. Definitely would return and try many of their other burrito flavorings!

Ty W.

Yelp
Had a carne asada burrito at Testal. It was relatively inexpensive at around six bucks. That little burrito reminded me why getting what you pay for is still something to keep in mind. Was it bad? No, I've had worse. Was it good? Sure, I was hungry and it was food. Will I come back? Probably not. It's counter service, so you order and seat yourself. Ambience is ok, it's in an odd location on Grand Ave with a bunch of weird businesses in the complex behind it. Lots of parking was a plus.

Yelp
I heard this place had some of the best burritos in AZ so I had to come try while I was downtown after visiting the Japanese Friendship Garden that is nearly 3 miles away from this restaurant that is on the outskirts of dwntn phx. Therefore it is a little sketchy in this area but go with a group of friends and be safe. The music matched the authentic vibes of a Mexican restaurant you'd want to hang out at with friends on a beautiful afternoon. I ordered the number 3 the Deshebrada. This was a shredded beef burrito with green chilies and potatoes. The tortillas are so delicious one of the best tortillas I've had in a long time and the strong aroma of fresh tortillas fills the beautifully decorated dining room. The frijol y queso was so warm and yummy, I'm very picky with my beans and I couldn't stop eating them! The drinks here are also strong and refreshing I recommend the Kate's Flojera cocktail to pair with any tacos or burritos. The even have handmade souvenirs near the counter, where you order. So adorable!!

Yelp
It's been almost two years since I wrote my first review of Testal. I still love it here. I've taken so many friends here for their burritos. I usually spend around $20 for two vegan Colorado burritos and a non alcoholic drink. I often order to-go and my food is ready almost instantly and always warm and fresh. I don't do a lot of Mexican food being a vegetarian. Most restaurants don't have a ton of good options and, honestly, I am Mexican and miss the traditional tastes of foods I enjoyed growing up. If I'm going to have an authentic dish it feels silly trying to make it vegetarian. This isn't Americanized in any way. They only recently added chips and salsa to their menu. The owner has told me that these recipes are his moms and he wanted to share her cooking with the community. The flavor of each dish is to die for, texture is perfect, tortillas are soft and the salsa is INSANE. I love their salsa negra. It's so spicy, salty and flavorful. It's a mom and pop business, they have karaoke on Fridays and I've never had a bad dish. Phoenix is sleeping on Testal - make sure you check it out soon.

Yelp
I have been here 2 days in a row for a total of 4 burritos and a paleta each visit. The aroma of the warming tortillas, braised meats, and chiles takes you back to abuelita's cocina. Everything I have tried here is well executed comfort food. Love in a tortilla.

Yelp
I have visited Testal 2x since this last review, and was a little bummed at my visits. I really enjoy eating out and having a consistent experience as it truly is a treat, but these past times fell a little flat. First visit (since my review), we ordered the Vegan Chile Rellano Burrito and the Vegan Chorizo Burrito, both still yummy. We decided to order Chips and Salsa as well...she gave us a small plate of chips, and said that the "salsa" it came with was the squeeze bottles that they have on the counter next to the register, on ice in a tub...so, you're basically paying $5 for a very small amount of chips, as the salsa is what you get for your burrito anyway. I apologized for the confusion and asked for a refund. The place was empty, and the energy felt a little stagnant :( Second visit, we actually walked out and got food at Earth instead. I noticed they increased their prices on their burritos since the last time, and had a really hard time spending $8 on a little burrito. Oh well, it was good while it lasted ;)

Yelp
Ordered online- 11.50 for a 6 inch burrito that was cold and not edible poblano - place was empty - I mentioned I ordered online and there was only one bag she looked all around asked my name then placed the bag on the counter - so disappointed- I've been wanting to try this place as they are right around the corner - we won't be going back - please improve quality of food and service
google avatar

Jim P.

Yelp
Nice people and good food with reasonable prices. Order at counter and pick up your food. Burros, tacos and burrito bowls were all very good with quick service
google avatar

Crystal M.

Yelp
Always a fun time. I love that they offer vegan and non vegan foods. I'm a fan. I've only tried the burritos so far, they're good! I really enjoy their vegan creamy cheese sauce. As far as the dining experience, very casual. they have small indoor seating, and outdoor seating. on the weekends or maybe just at night they have karaoke, which looks like a lot of fun !
google avatar

Veronica A.

Yelp
Delicious food, great salsa options. Available indoor and outdoor seating. Fast service. Quite ambiance when I went during the weekday late afternoon.
google avatar

Magi A.

Yelp
service was great - menu was explained in great detail. i got the colorado burrito and a birria taco. the colorado burrito was delicious, it wasn't what i was expecting but i was delighted :) it was not the best birria taco i had but i was satisfied. great spot if you want something light as the burritos are small.
google avatar

Ava G.

Yelp
REALLY GREAT AUTHENTIC MEXICAN FLAVORS! I got the Colorado and Deshebrada burritos. I loved the authentic flavors! The red salsa on the side is SO SPICY! My friend got the Relleno and Piccadillo burritos, and I tried his, but they were just alright compared to the ones I got, which is why I gave 4 stars. The burritos are a bit messy, but authentic! I will say I appreciate that this restaurant has many VEGAN options! I may have to return to try those!

Yelp
The food amazing and great en environment. Teresa is so nice and very kind. I will be going often

Yelp
I wanted to keep this place to myself but need to share to make sure this gem stays in business for many years to come! My grandpas side of the family is from Chihuahua and walking into this place smelled like my nanas house. Literally transported me from the second we walked in. Located directly off grand and man it was already busy before 11am on a Saturday. We got 2 #3 which is green Chile beef with potatoes and added beans and cheese to one. #5 picadillo gordita with beans and cheese and a #14 chorizo burrito. Now, we did wait about 40 minutes for our food and it's a small place but it was so worth it. The tortillas are made fresh daily and everything was PERFECT!!! I wouldn't change a thing. I cannot wait to come back and the kids already want another picadillo gordita so I'm sure we will be back sooner than later. Please be patient if you go and there's a wait. I promise the food is worth the wait!!

Yelp
So Good! Like truly so so so so GOOD! We went today to Testal for the first time, so delicious! So authentic! Tastes like my Nana or Tia would have cooked it. We had all vegan options and all that we tried were delicious! Our favorite was the Vegan Picadillo Burrito So happy we tried it and cannot wait to be back. Fresh tortillas, great atmosphere. The owner came by and checked on us. Staff were all super friendly and the ladies cooking!! Fantastic!!!
google avatar

Yelp
We'll be back again soon, and frequently. Friendly staff and owner. Great selection of Sotols. Terrific food. Regional dishes prepared true to the region.

Yelp
Oh my! I had read a lot of positive reviews from vegans about this place, but it wasn't just hype! I'm a die-hard bean and cheese burrito fan, but most vegan Mexican options skip this and focus on the fake meats. The bean and cheese vegan burrito here is legit. The tortillas are perfection - great toothiness and fresh. The beans were straight-forward, no messing with them good. I'd have probably melted the vegan cheese a touch more, but it was so nice to have it! The burritos were sized and priced just right for me to to have two and be beyond stuffed. And for those who don't like beans - they have several other vegan options! My husband had the vegan picadillo burrito and the vegan colorado burrito. He liked both (wiped the plate with the tortilla good) but preferred the flavor of the picadillo burrito. Both used impossible meat, but tasted totally unique. The burritos came with salsa verde and salsa roja. Both were deliciously fresh and the roja was very spicy! They also had great looking drinks - maybe next time. The restaurant is small but cute - not great for large parties but perfect for two. It can get crowded fast. Service was friendly and efficient. They have plastic sheets between tables for Covid safety. We will definitely be back!

Margo L.

Yelp
The burritos were all delicious! The burrito wrappers are made in house. The chile relleno burrito was soo good
google avatar

Ali B.

Yelp
I've been to this area before and thought all the restaurants looked so cool! Stopped in before a concert tonight and it was a good place to go because there was no wait and our food was ready quick. I love that they have a good variety of vegan options. I got the vegan frijol and vegan rajas burritos. They were super filling. I liked the bean one better but wish the vegan cheese was a little more melty. The rajas was good but I think the filling would've tasted better in a bowl. The drink I got was really delicious, tasted like limeade but with chia seeds, which I love. My husband just got a burrito and there was just so much cheese and it kinda had a weird consistency so he didn't eat much of it. Glad I tried this place though, it's cool!
google avatar

Gina B.

Yelp
Came here for lunch after a friend recommended their bean burrito. I ended up ordering the 3 tacos though. Chicharron Colorado Picadillo The side beans was delicious!! And I love their mild green salsa. It was very flavorful. The red hot salsa was good, not too fiery hot but definitely warm. The tacos were delicious but I wouldn't order the chicharron again. I guess I was expecting some crunch because that's traditionally how I've eaten chicharron. But it just felt like I was biting into a mouthful of fat. Chewy and I didn't like the texture. The corn tortillas were SO delicious. Soft and so flavorful. I wonder if they make them? They taste very fresh. Atmosphere is very chill and relaxing. They have an outdoor patio as well. I'd come here again and try one of their burritos.

Joti S.

Yelp
i am obsessed with their carne asada burritos! i always think i'm going to try something new but i always come back to that burrito lol the service is great, the woman who always helps me is super nice and friendly, always greeting people when they walk in. i have only dined in once but when i did the atmosphere was nice.
google avatar

Matt B.

Yelp
Good place for smaller, simpler, no-frills burritos, with lots of vegan options. I ordered a vegan breakfast burrito ($5.75) online, and it was ready 20 minutes later for pick-up. It comes with a choice of red or green salsa and/or sour cream (vegan sour cream is an additional $0.50) -- I just did red salsa. The burrito comes with soyrizo, tofu scramble and potatoes. It more resembles a taquito in how small it is -- I guess it's just a mini-burrito. Tasty enough, and the red spicy salsa is a nice addition. Nothing special, just a good simple burrito for a low price. Solid spot.
google avatar

Mary L.

Yelp
I was so excited to try this place and I was very disappointed. I order a chile rojo and bean burrito but they were mediocre. I know true Mexican (specially Chihuahua) food and this was not it! The bean burrito was tasteless and the chile rojo was nothing out of the ordinary. The only good thing was the "Mexican coke". I really wanted to love this place but sadly I didn't.
google avatar

Khadeijah M.

Yelp
It was so flavorful like e every bite tingled everyone of my taste buds. I even got all the vegan tacos and I loved 2/3. The drink was mainly fruity and had maybe a bit too much I've and not enough tequila but still good. I love that they have heaters in the outside seating areas. To think I walked 40 min to go to another restaurant that was closed and stumbled upon this amazing food.
google avatar

Ben H.

Yelp
We were on our way walking to a vegan restaurant when we passed Testal (northern) Mexican food. We looked at the menu for a split second before easily changing our minds- and we were happy we did. The staff members educated us on the area he was from in Mexico (my apologies, I don't remember exactly where-but north). He told us about Iskiate drink (chia and lime juice) which I am absolutely going to try and make at home. Delicious and nutritious. We both ordered burritos, #3. Although they were relatively small in size and simple in ingredients the green burrito was full of flavor. Grand Ave is full of hidden gems in terms of downtown eateries. Testal might be one the best...

Yelp
My first time coming here i was exited about the gorditas but came to find they dont have gorditas. However it is not a deal breaker there is buritos and i will say the food took me back to home, i am from El Paso Texas and i grew up with this flavors. I tasted a burito of colorado, chicharon, desebrada and chile en rajas. The first three they are a must have you cant go wrong with any of them, however on the other hand i just did not like the taste of the chile en rajas flavor. It was the chile used that had a biter taste it was like dry chile and poblano was used for the making of the giso. The drinks are good i had a guacamaya and a shot of sotol asienda chihuahua. At the end of the day i do give it a 5 star because my over all experience was fabulous and everyones taste buds are different.
