Thach Che Hien Khanh - Review - Garden Grove - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Thach Che Hien Khanh is a tiny, dimly lit dessert shop where everyone in Little Saigon goes to satisfy their post-dinner sweet-tooth. It’s cash only and there’s no printed menu to speak of, but you’re going to want one of their ché beverages (a coconut milk-based dessert drink filled with everything from boba to pom seed jelly to mung bean). It’s incredibly refreshing, a textural jigsaw puzzle, and exactly what you want after a big meal." - Brant Cox

The 23 Essential Vietnamese Restaurants in Little Saigon, Orange County

"Thach Che Hien Khanh is located in an outdoor shopping plaza filled with restaurants and novelties. An imperial red and gold colored arch with “T&K Food Market” emblazoned overhead indicates the right place. The small Vietnamese dessert shop sells items to go. It’s old school, which means here are no tables or chairs, and people wait in line to be served cafeteria-style. Refrigerator cases in the front have soy milk pudding cups sweetened with palm sugar syrup, and other sweets. Behind the glass partition, women serve heaping portions of sticky rice flavored with durian or pandan. There are other Vietnamese desserts such as bánh bò, chewy sponge cakes made with tapioca and rice flours; che dau trang, sticky rice with black-eyed peas sweetened with coconut milk; pounded sticky rice “turtles” filled with sweet beans, and fried sesame balls with mung bean. The dessert beverages are similar to Filipino halo-halo. Scoop up spoonfuls of sweet condensed milk layered with red beans and colorful jellies flavored with seagrass, coffee, coconut milk, and pandan. Remember, this place only accepts cash." - Jenn Tanaka

Google
A Vietnamese friend recommended this place to me, saying it offers authentic Vietnamese snacks — and I’m glad I gave it a try! I sampled a few different snacks (though I’m not exactly sure what they were called), but everything I tried was tasty and very affordable. There was a short wait before ordering, but once our order was taken, the service was quick and efficient. Definitely worth a visit if you’re looking to try authentic Vietnamese desserts and snacks!

Google
One of our favourite dessert places, would recommend if you are craving Vietnamese desserts.

Google
Cash only fyi! Decent assortment of desserts but quite overpriced for quality. Other reviews say same thing. $4/ea for a small dessert. Tiny sesame balls are $2/5 and not quite worth it. Noticed volume of customers is dropping, likely due to prices. If you're next door for 7 leaves, maybe stop by. Otherwise, try another che place.

Google
A small authentic Vietnamese dessert spot with a huge variety. The bánh ít trần was great, with lots of filling, a good sticky texture, and mung bean coating. The xôi lá cẩm and xôi lá dứa combo was great The rice itself was dry, but the mung bean and coconut topping made it better. The Bánh rán was good, but it tasted too oily.

Google
This place has the best Vietnamese desserts. Customer service is good. Everyone that works there is friendly and helpful. I don't speak much Vietnamese but I know just enough to order. My go to is the Chè Ba Mau. Parking is limited but you can always park in the nearby neighborhood and walk there.

Google
I have tried desserts from here but this was my first time coming here in person. The place is packed, even during the day they have a line. I ordered #2 and a coconut milk dessert with taro, which was very good. I also ordered the sesame balls, they are 3 for $1. Finding parking is hard, the restaurant is located in a small corner shopping center where there is 4 to 5 restaurants and a liquor store. #1 has beans and coconut milk, not too sweet but definitely not my favorite or will order again. #2 was really good, it's sweet but perfect!

Indulge yourself in a Vietnamese dessert paradise! Whenever my partner and I are in the area, we always make it a point to stop by for some indulgent afternoon treats. The che chuoi, with its perfect combination of banana, coconut sauce, tapioca, and casava, is always my partner's favorite, while I can never resist the 3 color dessert, a generous cup filled with delicious toppings like red beans, mung bean paste, and tapioca. Despite the crowds and overwhelming number of choices, you can't go wrong with anything here. The quality and taste of the desserts are always top-notch. The only downside is the parking can be a bit of a hassle during peak hours, so be sure to keep an eye out for available street parking. Not all the workers here speak English so if you can bring a Vietnamese friend, that will be best. They also have a young worker that can help with translating what each tray contains if you're curious on what to try. Pro tip: Bring cash as they don't accept credit cards. You can always Venmo the owner but it's just easier to have extra cash handy.

With so many other restaurants, bakeries, and cafes nearby offering more variety, larger portions, or better quality for the same price—or even less—it was hard not to feel disappointed. For $4 each I could get a fresh pastry from the trendy bakery next door.

Yelp
Alright, so I'll admit, this place has the most unique desserts. Since I didn't grow up with these delicacies they have quickly become one of my guilty pleasures and I just love everything about this little bakery! I especially enjoy the banana coconut Vietnamese morsels of goodness. To be honest, I don't know what the true Vietnamese name is, but that's a pretty close description . The soft chewy bananas combined with coconut sauce makes for a tasty not too sweet treat. You gotta check this bakery out for yourself as it is a local gem!

Yelp
Recently in the area so stopped by here to pick up some sticky rice and dessert. There were no customers in the stores other than myself, then 2 people came in right behind me. They had hardly anything behind that glass window. All the trays were empty. Only some pre-packed items as shown in pictures. The chicken sticky was very bland and rather dry. I'm not sure of the relationship between this one and the one on Bolsa but many of the same type of dessert that both places offer don't look nor taste the same. Personally, I prefer the other location. I wonder if they are franchised and owned by totally 2 different owners? The other location always has a super long line on the weekends, regardless what time of the day though.

Yelp
The best che and xoi spot in OC. Cash only. My favorite is the Che ba mau and mung bean xoi.
google avatar

Kelsey C.

Yelp
Incredible! Very little English is spoken in this cash-only pick-up shop, and I loved everything I ate. I did have to ask a friend what I actually ate after the fact but it was all amazing. Banh Da Lon is a gelatinous tapioca flour base flavored with pandan sandwiching a pasty mung bean filling. Sticky Rice is classic, though it's my first time having the Vietnamese iteration. Great texture, subtle sweetness. The Banh Tam is new, and it's hard to resist these colorful wide noodles. Grated cassava with tapioca starch forms an almost-mochi which is crusted with coconut and sesame seeds. A sweet pandan drink has a great contrast of grainy texture with pandan jelly cubes. They have a truly impressive spread, and I've barely scratched the surface. I'm determined to try everything here one day.

Yelp
If you like viet desserts, this is the place to buy it. Again, parking is still terrible so you'll wanna park across the street in the neighborhood. I ordered a ton of items! They accept Zelle here!! Yes, Zelle! So no need for cash anymore! Yay! The Che Thai is the best here. Everyone gets it! The sticky rice is a little dry but they have durian xoi so everyone gets it! They speak English, and if they don't understand you, you can just point to it. Service is great and place is fairly clean. I'll be back! Yum

Yelp
Lots of Vietnamese desserts to choose from! There are no prices listed, so just ask. I had to get the Che dessert drink and it was PERFECT! It was so good that I went back in to get another before leaving. There are homeless people outside of the shop and the parking is small.

Yelp
Don't ever get their cassava cake. I picked one up on Monday and it's now Tuesday night (less than 24 hours later. It has been in the fridge since I got it and went to go have a piece and see that there's mold. Ugh. Not cool. I'm now questioning all the other stuff...
google avatar

Yelp
viet desserts are superior!! and you can't go wrong with any of the options here! 'pandan sticky rice w/ coconut': nice pandan flavor and I love that the sticky rice is not too sweet. 'cassava silkworm cakes': these are so fun to eat! it's slightly chewy and has a subtle coconut flavor! grew up eating these, so they are super nostalgic. any of the che options are also really good here! everything is reasonably priced, also make sure to bring cash!! it's a to go place so ordering is quick and simple.
google avatar

Kelly N.

Yelp
I thought the desserts here were a bit bland. I came here to try the Cassava Silkworm Cakes and the Suong Sa Hot Luu drink. I couldn't taste much flavor from the Cassava Silkworm Cakes on its own. The coconut milk sauce it came with made up most of its flavor. The texture was chewy and the coconut flakes surrounding it was soft. For the drink, it could have been a bit sweeter. It didn't have much taste to it but the different jelly textures made it unique. The drink itself had a light sweet bean and milky taste to it.
google avatar

Yelp
I love the variety of che. Definitely mom and pops vibes. I like that it's not too sweet. Always a pit stop when I come to visit.

Yelp
A small dessert place that always gets packed. It's kinda hidden situated in the inner side of the plaza. Everyone seems so friendly and accommodating. They understand you for not speaking Vietnamese and would try to have somebody who speaks English to help you and explain to you what you are curious about. Around $50++ later and 2 big plastic bags later, we finally left the place. We had drinks, yummy durian desserts, Thai desserts, warm desserts, cold desserts, savory desserts, sweet desserts and didn't know what else we raided at that place. Anyhow, I took one star away because maybe we got too greedy and got too much to bring home, some of them tasted weird when we got home. Most of the time is the one that has coconut. Bummer.
google avatar

Betty M.

Yelp
The place to go to for Vietnamese sweet desserts. All types of desserts that you can imagine. Each small container of the goodies are from $3-5 dollars. I love their Xôi(sticky rice with different flavors). Ranging from durian to pandan flavored to mung beans Xôi. Some the sweet desserts come with coconut milk for the extra flavor. Line up and choose your favorites.
google avatar

Linda T.

Yelp
Came here for Vietnamese dessert and the green colored sweet rice was bad. It tasted old as if it was from the previous day leftovers. I'm not surprised since who wants to waste food. I had to throw it out. It was such a waste of money. Beware if you decide to come here.
google avatar

Yelp
It's not perfect, nothing is. Parking is a bit tight, but lots of people coming and going so it's an easy flow. Some un housed people nearby smoking mysterious things and giving dirty looks, very inappropriate gathering and causing discomfort to businesses. Desserts are on point, cash only. I agree with others, there's a line but it doesn't really mean anything. It helps if you speak Vietnamese, I don't, some workers behind the counter speak perfect English so don't assume you must know Vietnamese. I went on a Monday at around 2 and it was busy but not too long of a line. They did help someone who arrived after me, but in their defense he was probably a regular, he ordered probably $40 worth of desserts and was very fast at ordering. I was such a newby asking what is what, etc. but when they helped me I was given the same attention they gave to other customers who were speaking Vietnamese and ordering a ton. I can't tell you the names of what I ordered, but I ordered every coconut milky soupy dessert and I loved all of them. My favorites were the ones with taro and another with cassava, there's also a banana tapioca one that is epic. Overall I can oversee the flaws because the type of desserts they serve here are truly hard to find. I went to Vietnam and fell in love with Vietnamese desserts and this is the only place I've come across that has authentic Vietnamese desserts. Wish they had this one cold coconut Dan Ang dessert with tapioca and fresh young coconut, that is basically impossible to find anywhere. It's my all time favorite I just need to learn how to make it at home.
google avatar

Sherluna V.

Yelp
Love the Che here but it's more of a place for the OG. I'm not good at Vietnamese so I just point at what I want. Prices aren't listed but I just go with the flow. My favorite Che is the corn one! :)
google avatar

Jay C.

Yelp
This place has always been my go to for Vietnamese desserts. It's a bit of a hole in he wall with a kitchen vibe but don't let looks fool you. they have a great selection of sweets in all forms. Everything coconut and you can't go wrong. Everything sticky rice! I love their green Xoi Nuoc Dua it's super delicious. The staff is very friendly and very helpful even though they may not all speak English'.
google avatar

Emily K.

Yelp
A Vietnamese dessert staple where I've been going to for years! I got the banh da lon and che thai and they were both delicious and not too sweet! I think it was around $8 ish for both. I've also gotten other items before and they have a medium sweetness level--the che ba mau is too sweet for me so whenever I get it I just ask them to make it less sweet. This is my go to stop to pick up some dessert since it's fair priced and delicious! SERVICE: Most of the workers speak vietnamese but there are some that can speak english, and you can also just point to what you want and they'll get it for you. There isn't really a line system sometimes and it's busy so you have to walk up and make eye contact / get the attention of a worker to get served. I don't speak vietnamese but I was able to have a quick and easy transaction. Overall, I would recommend this place as they offer a variety of delicious different vietnamese desserts at a good price, I have been going since I was a kid and I will continue to come here when I crave it!

Yelp
After 2 hr of nonstop eating in Little Saigon, this was the perfect ending to a hot day. The layered steam cake & mung bean cakes were fantastic. Loved the mixed smothie which has coconut milk & condensed milk but not overly sweet, it also contained yummy ingredients such as fruits, yam & beans. The tri-color drink was very sweet which i didnt mind. This shop is only for take out, no chairs or table inside.

Yelp
Whenever I come to Westminster with my parents, we come to this che place DAILY. My mom is a fan and if my mom likes the food, it's legit. She is the pickiest person I know. Best to have cash when you come here as they seem to prefer cash and I believe there is a minimum card purchase. My go-to is the che chuoi, which is the banana che with coconut milk and tiny tapioca pearls. They have two different kinds, they have the banana that it's like a cake or just thai bananas. Both are delicious. They have multiple locations around California, but my family always goes to this one. If you can't find parking in the lot, you can park on the side street where the neighborhood is.

Yelp
It is BUSY! I came here with my brother in the afternoon on a Saturday and it was packed! Everyone was moving super fast and orders were being given and passed out left and right but we managed to snag everything we wanted and they were absolutely delicious! We had 3 things; Silkworm cassava cake - this was my favorite out of the 3 that we picked out. It was sweet, sticky, and to top it all off there was something similar to a coconut syrup concoction that we pour on top of it that elevated the dessert even more! The coconut syrup was sweet yet salty and the same time and really blended the two elements together super well. Banana dessert- I'm a huge fan of banana and this dessert definitely did my craving justice. There were huge chunks of banana in this sweet and savory coconut liquid type thing and it was delicious! The bananas were really aromatic and the coconut brought the flavors of the banana out. Cassava and jam - Also super delicious! The cassava was nice and sticky, but not overly sticky and mixed with the coconut milk was delectable!
google avatar

Yelp
If you want Vietnamese desserts this is the place to go! The great thing about this is it's on displayed so even if you don't know what to order you can see and ask about it. There's so much different types of dessert to choose from including refrigerated items. The prices are pretty affordable and some items like the deep fried sesame balls are sold as sets rather than individual pieces. The desserts weren't too sweet just right. The place is clean, staff are nice, and there's free parking the plaza. I'll come back when I"m craving for Vietnamese desserts.
google avatar

Tina C.

Yelp
They will forever be the my goto spot for Che Ba Mau. They are always pretty consistent with flavor. They accommodate if you want ice on the side to take home. Another thing I love getting here is the Banh Da Lon. I would definitely give them a try if you are in the area.
google avatar

Alisa K.

Yelp
The best place for Vietnamese dessert! Take my words with a grain of salt because I'm not Vietnamese but I've tried a healthy amount of Viet food in my life and I'll happily say this place has the best and most consistent authentic Vietnamese dessert. I don't know what any of the names are but as long as you point and say how many you want, the workers will understand you (plus most of them speak English anyway). They always have a very diverse and full selection with every tray filled with something different. They even try to stuff as many different things in the tiny corners of the display case. They also have pictures of the dessert drinks on the wall and my go to is #2 with mung bean!
google avatar

Christine N.

Yelp
This is my mom's favorite spot for Che. I personally like banh mi che Cali... but to each their own. I love walking around and browsing all the sweets and desserts from my childhood... even tho I always forget their names and have to ask my mom to remind me... it's a bit of nostalgia walking around here. One of my favorites is this sweet black rice with mung bean paste... I always ask for extra mung bean paste and the ladies who work here always smile and give it to me because they know I prefer desserts a tiny bit sweeter since I'm so "Americanized." My mom will scold me that I'll give myself a stomachache eating so much mung bean paste but she relents because she knows I don't have access to all these goodies in NYC. I love it here :)
google avatar

Ariel L.

Yelp
I've been craving chè for so long and finally got some! I chose the right place bc these desserts were sooo good. The coconut jelly in an actual coconut was only $5.50!

Karen N.

Yelp
They sold me expired items--- sweet desert and sticky rice- so buyers please beware- Sam bo luong, banh tam tasted sour the next day- fresh. quality sweets shouldn't be sour tasting the next day Che chuoi, banh cop, xoi gat, xoi vo was okay for me that next day So that's why there customers when I visited them. This first visit will be my last. They also rushed me to pay...no patient... Don't be their next victim.
google avatar

Brian P.

Yelp
I don't speak Vietnamese and have no idea what I ate here- but it was tasty. I had a number 2 drink which was mixture of coconut milk and various tapioca stuffs. Maybe some taro too? It was good. I also had some desert which had coconut milk, taro and banana. It was tasty. I'd come back again. Staff are friendly and patient with non-Vietnamese like me :)
google avatar

Van S.

Yelp
One of the best Vietnamese dessert in town. They have many types of xoi and Che. Definitely dessert heaven. Why am I giving this place 2 stars? The service and the atmosphere is terrible. They have a line for customers to wait in, but they don't fully enforce it. One lady walked in , cut everyone in line and the employee still took her order. The employees didn't care who turn it is. I felt so intimidated when coming in here because the employees expect you to speak Vietnamese when ordering it. My mom came in with me and she did all the talking otherwise I would've skip this establishment.

Dung D.

Yelp
Very good service. Good taste. All of the desert on the Menu. Good location. Easy to find. I am coming back every week
google avatar

Sue D.

Yelp
This place has so many kind of yummy desserts! My fav was the durian and mung bean in the refrigerator. Not sure how much it was. Small size cup ($3) for others. We got 6 different dessert (small), a drink and 2 rice, total $23.50. Well worthy it!

Michelle K.

Yelp
I've been coming here since 1988 to enjoy Vietnamese dessert drinks...it's so delicious and are unique from any other type of Asian dessert! Quality has been consistently good for decades!
google avatar

Azzy O.

Yelp
Today would be my last visit as I don't like the inconsistent price they give me when I cash out. I get the same 3-4 items regularly and today I was $35 for 4 items. Insane.
google avatar

Tina T.

Yelp
This spot is great for authentic Vietnamese desserts and sticky rice! They are always busy but the line goes quick. It's a take out type of setting. My fav is the Che with jellies and red tapioca starch. They have a variety of choices to choose from! The pandan and mung bean banh is good too.
google avatar

Jenny N.

Yelp
My parents have been buying che here for years since I was a kid and now it's me ordering here on my own as an adult. The desserts are always consistent and service is quick. Parking in this lot is usually fine but can be hectic since it's small. I love their che bap/corn dessert. Their prices are reasonable too.
google avatar

Yen L.

Yelp
Vietnamese dessert heaven! I love coming to Thach Che Hien Khánh with my parents because it brings back a lot of nostalgia from living in Vietnam. They also are there to help me order the right things. If you don't know what you want, your first instinct is to try everything. You can go broke here with its vast number of options if you're not careful. Out go to is always the 3 color dessert (che ba mao), che chuối (banana dessert with cassava), and xôi (sticky rice). There are also other desserts options in the refrigerator by the cashier section. I love their Vietnamese flan, it's not the same as thicker Mexican flan so prepare yourself. You can never really go wrong here because everything is always good. Parking can be a pain during busy hours, so check for street parking if you can.
google avatar

Thao G.

Yelp
Loves the food. Consistently yummy. But since there's no pricings listed, they literally just tell you whatever prices. In the past, I was able to question them but I'm leaving town today and were in a rush. The guy charged me $34 for 6 things!!! I didn't even realize it until I'm halfway home because my kids were talking my ears off. So definitely come to get the delicious food, bring cash, and always ask for prices and check your total.
google avatar

Ngoc H.

Yelp
Brought my Vietnamese mother here who approved. They have a good selection of chè! Cash only!

Yelp
Employee shall not wear the same gloves collect money then go serve food. Her dirty gloves are all over your food. I

Lucy L.

Yelp
I visited this shop today even though their Yelp page states that they are closed on Wednesdays. I need to warn you all that you must check that all your ordered items were accounted for. I left for a road trip home and realized hours later that I was missing three items that the lady was supposed to grab from the kitchen for me. The lady behind the counter was very forgetful and I had to repeat my order at least four times for her to repeat back to me. She was speaking to me but her hands were not following what she said. She only took my money after charging me for all the items I ordered but only handed me half of my order. The desserts and snacks here are great but they will not pick up the phone, quick to scam customers without providing a receipt nor are they transparent about their item pricing, and it is questionable why they were open on a day that they are supposedly closed per Yelp. Be very careful when handling business with this shop.
google avatar

Tina K.

Yelp
I love going here and trying out the different items this place offers. I don't speak Vietnamese and am not well-versed in Vietnamese desserts/snacks. More often than not I rely on the visuals to guide me. If the place is not too busy and there aren't too many people behind me, sometimes I would ask one of the ladies what some of them were. Among the items I've tried, my favorites are the stewed banana in coconut milk, cassava with grated coconut, and che thai (mixed fruits in coconut milk) Don't forget to bring cash as this place is cash only. I've never had trouble finding parking at the lot, but I can imagine it may be difficult around dinner time since there are quite a few restaurants/shops in the same complex.
google avatar

Art C.

Yelp
I'm not even close to being an afficonado when it comes to Vietnamese pastries. In fact the items we got from here I can't even name (and also had never had before this vist). But I can attest that everything was tasty and made fresh. And tasty and fresh I do know a whole lot about. So check them out if you're in the area.
google avatar

Logan N.

Yelp
I keep giving them second and third chances. I've even tried different chain locations to see if it's any better, but I'm disappointed to say their coconut milk is not the same quality. It doesn't have the lovely coconut flavor like it did in the past. If they keep this low quality I think people will catch on.

Kevin E.

Yelp
This place should be audit from the City because their practice: The pricing is not listed so they can fool the people. One time I trashed a plate because smelly over due.... Recently, over priced watch out and ask for receipt....
google avatar

Debbie T.

Yelp
Love the desserts in here! A lot of types from sweet to salty! I love the service and ambience! Positive vibe and very friendly! I will come back for sure !
google avatar

Nguyet T.

Yelp
I have been buying desserts here for 15+ years. I drive a few extra miles vs to places closer to where I live but the increase in prices is too much for what you're getting. Maybe it's relative to current price increases but it makes me less likely to return.
google avatar

Grace N.

Yelp
Not sure if it is necessary to write a review about this place, because they are pretty popular in the Vietnamese community, the other kind, where the majority doesn't use the internet to look for food... However, for the rest of us, maybe my review will help you in some ways.. Their che (Vietnamese dessert with liquid) is good, and so is their xoi (sticky rice). I like their durian sticky rice (xoi sau rieng), along with other xoi, like xoi nep than (black sticky rice with mung beans and shredded coconut), the green sticky rice (I believe it's xoi com dep?). Their selection of che offers a good variety but I think they are more expensive than Banh Mi Che Cali. One thing to note during covid is they don't enforce social distancing... there are marks on the floor it, but they don't enforce it and other customers don't follow it either. And staff wears gloves and masks, however, they are still only accepting cash so... the gloves they use to handle everyone's cash is the same gloves they use to serve your food...... So I dunno.... proceed with your own risk I guess... Quality and everything is still same, consistent.. but if you're strict with Covid protocol, don't come here or you'll freak out..

Yelp
Still a good dessert place. Love the sweet coconut milk jelly dessert drink. Fast service. Remodeled store is brighter.

Yelp
Super small parking lot so if you can get street parking. I get #1 which is sweet and it comes with red bean, mung bean, pandan jelly, and coconut milk. It's $5 for this cup of goodness. These ladies work hard. So come out support this business. It's a hidden old school gem!

Yelp
Flan -rich, soft and lightly sweet with Carmel sugar at the bottom. Coconut jello -thick texture with the right amount of flavor . They need a "made on date" on these food packages.
