"The East Bay compatriot of the SFAC, the Athletic Club Oakland might very well be the best catch-all sports bar in the East Bay. It sports all local draft beers, Oakland sports legend-themed cocktails like the Vida Blue (whiskey, lemon, sugar, blue Curaçao) and Don Nelson (Hennessey, rum sugar, and bitters), big booths for groups and a loaded food menu (those crisscut fries and tempura battered cauliflower tho!) The St. Mary’s crowd shows up on Gaels game days and brunch pops off here too, with chicken and waffles to write home about." - Adrian Spinelli

"A new sports bar in the former Izzy’s Steak & Chop House space will kick off service soon, offering a new spot for Uptown Oakland to watch the game — whichever contest that may be, with 40 screens and 20 “sound zones” in the sizable space. The new bar at 59 Grand comes from Ezra Berman and Miles Palliser, the duo behind Divisadero’s San Francisco Athletic Club, and in keeping with that name, it’s called The Athletic Club Oakland — all the more appropriate for a bar in A’s territory. A grand opening is scheduled for May 15, though the doors will be open and TV’s on “in time for the Western Conference finals.”" - Caleb Pershan

Oakland Athletic Club has a cool, sporty atmosphere. The food is so-so, but where they shine is their drinks - good quality, though a tad pricey. It's a great spot to meet up, good for couples and small crowds. Solid 4 stars for the vibes and the drinks!

Google
This place is awesome!! I came here with my boyfriend for game 1 of the Finals and it was so sick! Wait staff was incredibly kind and best of all the food was soooo good! The beer was cold, we ordered wings, pizza rolls(most delicious) and pork belly pastor Tacos! Everything was fresh and crazy delicious. It was a full house and we were still able to go up to the bar and get water immediately. There wall to wall TVs, fun atmosphere 10/10 recommend!!! Bring your friends:)

I come here during college football season. They have PLENTY of TVs. I’m a healthcare traveler from Alabama and I have to watch my Auburn Tigers play. My dad came here from Texas (Baltimore native) to watch the Washington Commanders (red skins) play and I come during baseball season to watch the Washington Nationals. Every time they have been able to find a tv for me/us to watch. It’s hard to find a place that can do that. I hate leaving a review to share my good news because I don’t want others stealing my spot. But, good news is hard to come by these days. I just hope I can always have a spot to sit and watch my games when the time comes. It’s a great sports bar!!

Google
This is such an amazing place. Fernando and Josh gave such excellent service to our group and were very personable and accommodating. The drinks and food were perfect and left me feeling full and happy. Highly recommend.

Google
It got pretty crowded but service was still great for the 10am Sunday NFL games. Despite ordering through our phones, the staff were really attentive and made sure we always had water, and our drink orders came out quick. About half the TVs were playing the Raiders, but we got there a few minutes early and had no problem getting a TV close to us changed to a specific game. Fries were perfect, fish tacos were ok, but the burger left a lot to be desired. Considering it’s a sports bar, we weren’t too disappointed by it and we’ll definitely be back. Especially for the $5 mimosa deal :)

Google
It’s a nice sports bar with pretty good food and drinks. They have a few pool tables in the back, which is a nice touch. Good atmosphere. Nice servers. I enjoyed it. Will be back again!

My friends and I came for Sunday brunch and we had so much fun. The food, service, and DJs were great. There is indoor and outdoor seating and furry friends are welcome.

I visited early on a Saturday afternoon-- I was killing time waiting for a bus. It was apparently an "off" hour/day, probably because there were no significant games in progress. I was the only person in the place, which can be awkward. The service from the staff was prompt and courteous. I enjoyed a couple glasses of cider and looked at the menu but didn't have time to eat. I've been here a few times in the past and have found the experience to be reliably positive.

Yelp
Decent sizing Wait staff is nice Hella tv's everywhere, so really good game night Came for happy hour on a Wednesday. Like a decent amount of people here but still felt taken care of. Nice sized bar, and multiple billiards options I've been here before, food is okay but goes well with their drinks. Game day, groups and fine to just come alone.

Yelp
Came here to watch a Euro 2024 game. At halftime, they turned on music at the exact moment Alexi Lalas began speaking. 10/10, no notes, will be back. (We also enjoyed the appetizers we had, and my cocktail was tasty.)

Shanita F.

Yelp
The salad was pretty good and is filling. It comes with a lottttt of bacon (which I had to pick out because I didn't realize it came with bacon.....) and lots of blue cheese. The bacon and blue cheese was at the bottom of the dish, so you can't see it in the picture. This is a great spot to watch a sporting event. There are a lot of tvs, but not so many tables. It was enough seating to come for dinner and watch a regular season, Saturday warriors game. The staff isn't very attentive, and they will definitely leave you be. Friendly though.

Yelp
Came here for March madness and were seated right at the start of our game along with another table. With 5 minutes left in the game they came around and tried to turn all 15 TVs in our area to women's soccer and argued with us that we had been there too long to finish our game (since the start of the basketball game that was still in play) and that they have no idea why we were allowed to be seated that long- the length of one game at a sports bar where we spent over $50 a person. Not a good place to watch a game.

Misael R.

Yelp
Great place to go watch games, get a brew or some bar food. Watch some nba playoffs games and was hella coo with it

Jude D.

Yelp
Went to a friends going away party here. I had never been before, but this bar had good vibes and reasonably priced cocktails. Pictured is the blackberry lemon drop special that was only 8 bucks. Will have to come back and try the food next time!

Dan B.

Yelp
My favorite Sports Bar in Oakland for a number of reasons. Conveniently located off W Grand, across the street from paid parking lot, lots of meter parking along both sides- you can't beat that. This is the official bar to host a number of major sports broadcast, including Soccer (shoutout to American Outlaws Oakland!) The food doesn't miss here either. It's bar food but a notch above what you're used to. I love the wings, the burger, cauliflower wings (don't knock it until you try it) and they've got a great shelf of liquor and beers. I stopped by for brunch today and it was fantastic. The chicken and waffles were delicious! I left no morsel of food on the plate. I haven't been to brunch here in a long time but the live music, great food and beautiful weather will make me come out more often!

Mikaela S.

Yelp
A large sports bar with pool tables and arcade games willing to put on any sport you want! The staff are very nice and accommodating, just need to ask a waiter or other staff the channel you'd like to be put on. However, sound is synced to only one tv/the dj so that is not always available. You can order through the app and food and drinks come relatively quick. Everything is reasonably priced and the bar snacks are average. This is a great spot to watch any sports event.

Janette W.

Yelp
This is a solid sports bar and also a nice brunch spot. We had a good time here and enjoyed the drinks!

Chaz S.

Yelp
Spent a lot of time in Atlanta - almost a decade and have looked for wings in Oakland the last 2 years I've been here - and finally came across one's that are satisfying. Don't let the "beneath 4 stars" fool you. Definitely one of "them ones" lol. Will be back soon.

Kendra W.

Yelp
We randomly popped into this place last night! So the pros are the wings are super delicious! Waiters are friendly and attentive once your inside. And TVs with every game imaginable all around you! Cons: took forever to get us seated and not even the bartender acknowledged us. When we asked the bartender for help us he pretty much brushed us off cause he was busy taking shots with a guy at the bar. I mean it is what it is he a bartender so take a few shots but at least help us if we are the only ones other than 1 person sitting in the bar area. Would we come back... yes we definitely will. But hopefully next time we can get in a little faster.

Keanna W.

Yelp
It's a good sports bar for watching games. It can get loud from cheering so if you're sensitive to noise, this may not be the place for you. You order using a QR code scanner on your phone (very efficient). They do a good job of bringing food out in a timely manner. The food was good, I ordered the cauliflower wings and I really enjoyed them. They were fresh, steaming hot and quite tasty. I Didn't get a photo since I started eating them right after they were placed on the table. The chips and dip were good. The chips were crunchy, and the dips were cool. We reserved a table for playoffs and the verbiage stated verbatim "your deposit secures your reservation and will be applied to your final bill"; however when we tried notifying the staff to ensure that the deposit was applied we were told that the deposit covered our cover charge (entry fee) into the establishment which makes no sense. My advice: UPDATE the verbiage to reflect what you really mean because it's very misleading.

Kyshia M.

Yelp
This place is always a vibe during the Warriors season. Especially when we make it past the playoffs. The food always hit! They have a ton of options for solo eating or sharing. Endless amounts of drink options. Tons of seating BUT reservations are highly encouraged because it gets crowded, real quick on game days. Parking is nuts! But it's downtown Oakland so it's expected.

Rachel K.

Yelp
We came here to watch a match with some friends. It was later in the evening so we all ordered food before the kitchen closed for the night right away. They have an online ordering system for everything, so you can order and pay through your phone and the servers bring it out when it's ready. I noticed with my credit card that each time you order it puts a hold on your card for the amount your spending, I freaked out initially when we received a $57 charge then a $90+ charge after buying a pitcher for our group but realized they charged the new total. I'm still waiting for my discover card to drop the $57 hold but I feel better knowing only the final total actually went through. The food was really good, we ordered Frickles ($11) and Chicken Tendies ($15). Both items seemed a bit expensive, but we were hungry and really wanted to try the frickles. The Chicken Tendies were a bit disappointing for $15, you get about six pieces and while they were crispy and flavorful, they would have been a better value with fries. The servers were really nice and attentive with clearing off plates and bringing out our orders and the beer was cold and plentiful. I absolutely come back again, but would probably would eat before coming and just enjoy some drinks and the game.

Yelp
They have the Best Lemon Pepper Wings Ever!!! Hella Flavorful!!! Their service, atmosphere, cocktails, music & vibe are Nice!!!

Carly M.

Yelp
Cool place to watch football. Very busy on a Sunday game day. Order food and drinks via your phone so service is not an issue! Pretty good food and lots of good drink specials!

Portia P.

Yelp
Always a good time at the Athletic Club, even more when it's big events. We stopped by to watch the niners championship game right as the Bengals won. Perfect timing since ppl came for the early game & were leaving. s/o to Ezra!!! He makes it happen. We had a few items, I had the AC Burger with fries. We had some wings. Drinks were great! I love the vibe and energy when I come here for sporting events. Always a groovy time! PS - I also appreciated the COVID protocol. They capped capacity at enough people to feel safe being outside around a crowd. Plenty space to social distance. But, no more hi-fiving others not at ur table. :(

Bee F.

Yelp
Lots of screens playing. All kinds of sports. Came for a Premiere League soccer game. The food and service was great. Added bonus - kids are allowed during food service hours. Yay

Stan B.

Yelp
After receiving my burger I picked it up the bun split in half.. In the middle of watching the game I got up went to the kitchen and handed my plate. I was angry and wanted a explanation, they offered to remake the food and a drink.. I asked for a top shelf margarita they said they couldn't give me that At this point I asked for the operations manager's info they refused to give it to me . Horrible food experience even more horrible customer service. Would not recommend this place at all.,

Tiffany J.

Yelp
This place adveritises that they close @ 10p. We walked in @ 9:22p and the Hispanic bartender refused to serve us. We stated we only wanted 1 drink. He 1st says "The kitchen is closed" We again stated we only wanted 1 drink ( there were people still sitting, eating, and drinking @ the bar) He stated they closed 10 minutes ago. I asked "So you closed @ 9:12?" I then state that google shows that you close at 10p. He then states "We closed 5 mins ago" He kept looking at the black gentleman that worked there. I suppose because we are black. He made it clear that he had no desire to serve us at all. Never again. Service: 1/5

Yelp
I like their set up for outside seating and TVs, and the fact that they don't charge an arm and a leg for the stand up comedy. However, the food is pretty bland. The short rib nachos sounded and looked heavenly, but lacked flavor/salt/seasoning, and was BARELY any cheese! It had more sour cream than it did cheese. The wings were crispy but under seasoned (especially the one dry rub jerk flavor they had); literally tastes like it has no sodium in it, purely herbs/spices (and only lightly dusted on the wings). Same goes for the garlic fries: bland. The fried pickles were good -- but dang, that's it? C'mon Athletic Club. You order online and they bring out the items, pretty fast actually. They now have indoor seating also, although outdoor does have heaters.

Jordan W.

Yelp
Best spot to watch any and all sports in downtown Oakland. Wings are on point, service solid.

Morgan Z.

Yelp
We stopped in at the Athletic Club Oakland this past weekend for football Sunday. The indoors and outdoors was packed but we were able to be seated quickly since there was only 2 of us. We stayed for about 3/4 of one of the mid-afternoon games and they're were busy the whole time. I'd recommend making a reservation if you have a big group. They have QR codes on the table to order food and drinks. Unfortunately, after we ordered the system that uses those wasn't working for them. Once we flagged down one of the wait staff, they quickly brought out the drinks and food we had ordered. We were too hungry so we only shared the chicken tenders, but they were really good. They have so many TVs, both inside and outside, that we will definitely be back on another football Sunday!

Hernan T.

Yelp
went in during happy hour, prices were really good and the decor and vibe was nice i will definitely be back, thanks!!!

Jennay G.

Yelp
Solid choice to watch a game or event, but not too big of an event. For playoffs, Warriors or UFC it can get packed with a line out the door. For your average NFL Sunday or soccer match though, the AC has everything you need for a good time. Quick list: The TVs are abundant, service has always been pleasant, the self-serve water stations are convenient, the wings are solid, the beer list is varied, and the clientele is friendly during games (even if you're rooting for different teams). The establishment is family friendly but loud, so you may want to bring noise protection for your tiniest ones just in case. I'm especially a fan of the bleacher room in the back with the drop-down projector. The seating isn't as comfortable as a booth, but when the place is crowded you can usually squeeze into a spot.

Matt C.

Yelp
Sad to report, but I've got an update that I'm actually furious about. They selling 12oz draft beers. Only reason this isn't a one star is because the bar is otherwise a pretty solid sports bar. But this is shady af. Order a draft beer and the glass felt very small. I poured it into a 16oz plastic cup, and sure enough. The draft beers are 12oz. And we paying 16oz prices. Shady shit.

Mindy L.

Yelp
Set out for green beer on st. Patty's and came upon their outdoor patio--heaters and benches spaced out well. They had QR codes on the table for their menu and ordering which makes it super easy. Got the garlic fries and (small) cauliflower wings which were great to share between two people. I liked that they didn't toss the cauliflower in sauce so it stayed crispy Topped it off with Irish coffee for dessert. Overall good time

Kevin W.

Yelp
Wait time -1 Food quality -1 Lots of tv's +1 Drinks -1 Service -1 So many areas lacking that makes this place a tough sell. If you want to watch a game come here but don't expect the food or drinks to come within an hour.

Desirée H.

Yelp
best fried cauliflower i've ever had! it was so crispy and chewy. I would come back just for that.

Alfonso A.

Yelp
Me and my girlfriend were just basically told we couldn't sit where we were sitting at a high table when there were barely any guests in the establishment. The bar was full, so we sat at a table that had a view of the football game I wanted to watch. The server guy comes up and asks for our ID then says we can't sit where we are, and need to move because people might come later with more people to sit at our table. The lower tables we were going to be moved to, had enough space for bigger parties also. I'm so confused but sure I won't be coming to this place ever again. Oh not to mention, this was my first time coming here and was hoping it would be worth while. What a freakin joke.

Writer R.

Yelp
Cool door for sports enthusiast! Awesome ambiance and decor, IG moments and much to be entertained by. Love the pub snacks and food selections. More review to come...

Grant C.

Yelp
I've been coming to this place since they opened a few years ago. It's a great place to watch a sports game or just hang out with friends. They have tons of TVs and show a lot of different sports. They have a good selection of beers and a full bar. The food is decent. It's bar food. Nothing special. The fried cauliflower is pretty good. The wings are also crispy and tasty. The nachos are fully loaded and huge. The burger is just okay. I really like their QR ordering system because everyone at their table can order on their own check. No need to split checks at the end! Servers bring food out really quickly after ordering. There's a huge outdoor patio that is fully covered with bright lights and heat lamps. I volunteer with a local non-profit and we had a meeting here. The staff was super helpful in letting us reserve a large table and accommodate us. It was like having a private event since nobody else was outside. And despite the rain and wind, we were fully protected and very warm inside the tent. Staff brought us a whole cart of plates, utensils, and water for us. So appreciative of the great staff here!

Lisa W.

Yelp
Thanks for making our beloved boss's going away such a nice and memorable event with your beautiful outdoor seating, super-attentive staff, and plentiful selection of snacks, appetizers, food and drinks for those who drink alcohol and those who don't. There was a bit of a learning curve but I think we ended up loving the easy barcode ordering system you had set up at the tables. They were really quick at bringing things out, too. It was loud to some, but I personally liked the lively music and vibe a lot. We had so much fun, wish I could have stayed longer. We seem to do most of our larger staff farewells here, so we'll definitely be back.

Will P.

Yelp
I love the place for the sports appeal. It's a great place to hangout with other sports goers. The layout is nice and inviting. Somehow the layout makes it easy the meet people if it's your first time. I enjoyed the deep fried pickles. The pickles are worth a revisit. I wasn't happy with the beer selection they have. Most of the beer taps are similar in taste and or type (IPA vs Pils). I didn't like the wings at all. I had a ten count and the wings were small, overcooked and they tasted old like they'd been sitting in the bottom of the fridge all week. The wings didn't seem fresh. The price for ten wing definitively didn't match the quality.

Guillermo T.

Yelp
The worst place to eat in Oakland! Bid recommended this place ! Bad service ,awful and expensive food . Go somewhere else .

D H.

Yelp
The negative reviews surprise me. My experience at The Athletic Club was terrific. Super clean and inviting atmosphere. Definitely to spot to watch the big game and great for large parties. Food was delicious and their beer selection was sufficient enough for me.

Erica S.

Yelp
Good sports bar to watch a game. Higher priced food but tasty. Why are we paying service fees to order from a QR Code? This restaurant is among many that transitioned to QR ordering during the pandemic. I get it, great solution during tough times. However the "contactless" approach has killed the idea of service. Two of us went on a rainy Sunday night to watch a Dolphin's game. The bill was $90 for 2 entrées, 6 wings and 2 beers. We weren't greeted by anyone, our food was brough out quickly and was good, we had to ask for silverware and condiments, no one interacted with us beyond that. I had a service change for using the app and the tip value defaulted to 20% on my receipt. WTF? I'm frustrated with the feeling of being gouged by restaurants in the Bay Area and then expected to tip 20% for things that don't qualify as service. Bagging my takeout order isn't service, walking my food to may table isn't service, taking my coffee order isn't service. ACO is not alone, this is one example among many, sadly. My suggestion, bring back service and give your guests an experience that sets you apart. If you can't do that, don't charge us fees just to walk in the door.

Kimberly H.

Yelp
Discovered this spot during this past NBA season. Love the service, food, drinks and the energy this spot gives. I had a big group the times I went and was able to easily reserve a table online. My Mom loves sports so she was with me and the manager was very accommodating in making sure she had a chair with back support and was comfy. We ordered wings, fries, salad, fried pickles and tons of drinks and not one thing was disappointing. I give them kudos for the quick and efficient service during I'm sure one of the most busiest times of the year while we watched the Warriors win their way to another championship

Hai N.

Yelp
Meet a bunch of old high school friends after a service for a beloved friend here and the place was very spacious and accommodating. Easy to find since it takes up a large portion on the corner. Parking can be found across the street in a paid parking and metered parking if you are lucky to find some(not recommended if you have a rental car bc more than likely it will be broken into). Food: Bar food is dressed well with good flavors. Drink: The waitress seemed overwhelmed( prolly wasn't expecting 25 plus people on a whim) ordering as much drinks and food as we did. But she managed as best as she could. The bartenders, esp Daniel was awesome. He was on point throughout the night Bar: Very clean, very spacious, lots of tv, nice seats at the bar and throughout the business. Bathrooms were found downstairs and upstairs. Clean and tidy. Never felt rushed or a pushed out if some weren't ordering. Good vibes here with security staff as well Would recommend this joint for any occasion

Veda F.

Yelp
The Athletic Club is a great place to gather. It's the ultimate sports or political bar to hang out in. Several large screen tv's surrounds the bar and seating areas. If you don't like one tv, turn your head slightly to the left or right to see a different tv. I once watched baseball, gymnastics, and soccer at the same time. I wandered into the Athletic Club after work one night when I saw a candidate debate on almost every tv! It was spectacular to be amongst those interested in more than just sports. I had a great time getting to know other customers. I don't say this lightly, that night I had the best-mixed drink ever! The food is good with standard bar food, dogs, fries, wings and tacos.

Lam V.

Yelp
4.5 stars. Standard bar alcohol and food (and really, that's all that's needed) but gets an extra star for weekends when it's sunny with a DJ out. Can be really fun. Typically has space to stop in. Large crowd for Bay Area franchise games. I have fun here and the people are friendly.

Stina H.

Yelp
If you like dealing virtually only in a noisy place making conversation tough without losing your voice then you should go. If you're seeking a place with any kind of personable human service beyond seating you, don't.

Linda G.

Yelp
Big screen TVs, spaced out outdoor seating and, heat lamps!! The perfect sport bar honestly! We asked to watched two different basketball games and the staff easily accommodated. Will totally visit again.

Brian F.

Yelp
The owner/host dude that admits you into the outside patio is aggressive and rude af to his patrons. Bro, work on your delivery. Literally saw three ppl this week want to accost the man. Additionally, the food is terrible, expensive and they never have anything from their drink menu in stock. Seriously, some places shouldn't survive the pandemic (yah I said it).

Lynnette J.

Yelp
I am Yelping as I am still sitting in the bar. Customer service from the bartender (female, long black hair) ye, no, not good. Ordered drinks, food from the QR code. Watching the bartender on her cell phone (instead of making the drinks). Eventually go up to the bar and let the bartender know that there were drinks ordered in which the bartender acknowledged and said she would make them. I politely asked the bartender if she would wash her hands (bc she was handling her cell phone). She did do but in a condescending way, making sure I knew she was washing then raising her soap-sudsed hands in my view sight . I ordered the chips and guacamole $9. Not worth the price but I will say that the guacamole was really good. My husband ordered the chicken wings, lemon pepper flavor, average, lacks flavor, maybe a touch of additional seasoning would help pull flavor through. This is my 3rd time... would I come back, hmmm, maybe if I already had eaten ahead of time and I just want yo watch a game and was in the area but in all honesty, the prices don't justify the service or the food options/flavors.

Theresa L.

Yelp
Been waiting like forever to do another First Friday! Found a park and stopped at the first place we saw, we were just that hungry. Bouncer at the door cool Bartender James customer service on point Food hit the spot DJ jammin On The 1 I'd come back specally for happy hour I give this place 2 yums up and a Harlem Shake for the tunes!

Stephanie G.

Yelp
Great vibes and delicious food! Whether you want to go to watch football, or turn up for their brunch with a live dj, the athletic club is a great option for any dining occasion.

Jenna T.

Yelp
Came here during Game 6 of the Finals and by 4pm, the place was already packed. By 530pm, there was a line 2 doors down to get in. Also, you can't save seats but a lot of people do so it's not impossible. Given how crazy busy it was, the service wasn't that bad. They had a lot of staff coming around and taking orders even in the back room with bleacher seating. The bar is kid friendly but I didn't see much kids in there. Once the line starts, they're pretty strict on letting people in, but maybe that's because it was the Finals. The energy was crazy and the staff remained poise regardless how busy it was which is always impressive. The food wasn't bad neither! Great energy and atmosphere.

Mary K.

Yelp
If you want to freeze with the door open, have your game moved to ONE TV, and order food from a QR code and wait for it for an hour, be told you did something wrong only to then be told "it just popped up for the kitchen, sorry," never get your food and then be told "you need to leave or pay the $20 cover for a UFC fight," then this is the spot for you. It's not for me. Went in excited to see my college team (ranked #4) play and have a night out with my boo - left hangry at halftime. It's really a shame that a place like this can't do better for Oaklanders.
