How a Hotel in India Became the Ultimate Destination for Crab Rasam | Eater

"Guests are invited to a homestyle Chettinad dining experience prepared by longtime chefs Pandian and Kasi, who have been cooking regional Tamil dishes in Karaikudi for over 30 years under the ownership and family operation of 89-year-old matriarch Meenakshi Meyyappan. The kitchen highlights family recipes rooted in the Chettiar merchant tradition, with culinary influences from Burma, Malaysia, Singapore and Sri Lanka, and serves richly spiced, traditional fare. A standout is the crab rasam: whole crab legs mashed and combined with ground aromatics (black pepper, cumin, coriander, garlic, shallots, red and green chiles), turmeric, tomato purée and curry leaves; chefs say a tumbler of this soup has potent, restorative effects for body aches and colds by the next morning." - Terri Ciccone

Good location, beautiful property, clean good-sized comfortable room, very friendly and approachable staff who are very attentive. Small issue (which can be ignored) - Rooms lack telephone (therefore no room service) and TV. The lunch/dinner menus are limited, fixed and a bit expensive for what is offered. Overall, it is quite an experience staying at The Bangala, highly recommended.

An exceptional stay from start to finish! The hotel exceeded all expectations with its top-notch service, clean and comfortable rooms, and elegant atmosphere. Every staff member I interacted with was friendly, professional, and genuinely committed to making my stay enjoyable. The amenities were excellent, and the dining experience was outstanding. I felt truly welcomed and cared for throughout my time here. I would gladly return and highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a relaxing and luxurious stay.

Our time at The Bangala was truly unforgettable. From the moment we arrived, we were immersed in the hotel’s unique charm and warmth. The heritage architecture is beautifully preserved, blending colonial elegance with authentic Chettinad traditions. The staff were exceptionally kind, attentive, and genuinely cared about making our experience perfect. The food was simply outstanding — every meal was a delicious journey through Chettinad cuisine, prepared with incredible love and skill. The Bangala offers a rare experience where you feel transported to another era, yet with all the comfort and hospitality you could wish for. We left with beautiful memories and the firm desire to return. Truly a hidden gem!

Amazing food served during the banana leaf lunch. Quality was top notch & clean environment. The staff was also very friendly & repeat portions of any item you like was given. Bonus tip - Property has a souvenier shop where you will find fridge magnets & other handmade products.

Our stay at the Bangala was wonderful on all levels. The setting was tranquil with a wide variety of vibrant flowers and lush plants. Rooms were very clean and comfortable and the pool was gorgeous and refreshing. All of the staff were welcoming and accommodating of everyone's needs (we were a group of 16). The high-quality food was definitely a highlight. Would recommend and definitely re-visit!

Great location for visiting the Chettinad area. Why is this hotel listed as 1 star? It is at least a 3 star hotel, if not 4 star. Our room was not luxurious, but it was very large, well-appointed, and comfortable for sleeping. The pool was very nice and there were nice areas for sitting outside. The food was very good local dishes and the service was excellent. They say they don’t offer alcohol, but the host was able to get us wine and beer.

We had a wonderful stay with our kids at the Bangala. The rooms were spacious and beautiful. The hotel is well maintained. The staff is also kind and helpful, right from the managers to the housekeeping. Fantastic freshly prepared meals. One of the best hotels we have stayed at, truly 5 star!

We had lunch at the Bangala and had been looking forward to it since we had heard so much about Mrs Meiyappan. It was fantastic and didn’t disappoint! Everything was made with tremendous passion and attention to detail from the pickles to their homemade ice cream. The dishes were lovingly spiced and not hot. Every dish had a unique flavour profile and a personal touch. It was a fabulous gastronomic experience. Highly recommend!
