Brick House Sourdough Bakery and Bar Review - Peckham - London - The Infatuation

"Depending on your stride and/or obsession with letting a song finish before you go in somewhere, Brick House is about 30 steps away from Peckham Rye station. This bakery and coffee bar is a little on the small side, but it’s the perfect place to pretend to do some work and get a quick refuel in the morning or afternoon. If you fancy yourself as an amateur sleuth, you’ve probably already guessed that things on bread, between bread, or that are just simply bread, are well worth ordering." - Jake Missing

We just moved to the area, and this was one of the first local spots we tried and what a gem! The Brick House Bakery has that perfect mix of small-town charm and genuinely delicious food. We stopped in for breakfast and were greeted with such kind, welcoming service that it immediately made us feel at home. The whole place feels like a sweet throwback in the best way, shelves of nostalgic candies, homemade baked goods, and cozy seating. You can tell they care about their community and their craft. We’ll absolutely be back and it’s a wonderful reminder that sometimes the best food and warmest people are right in your own backyard. Grateful to have this place so close to our new home!

On a recent trip through upstate NY we stumbled across this great establishment! While there, we met Vinny, the owner of the bakery, when he came out to say hello to his customers :) We sat in an adorable back room that was bright and inviting. There was so much food to choose from, including breakfast, lunch/Boars Head cold cuts, coffee, soup, and delicious cookies and treats. Try the warm cinnamon roll! And did I mention candy?! He has one of the best candy walls I’ve seen in a long time :) Stop by and try this place. You will leave happy ;)

We were traveling from Alabama - Boston - Cooperstown and tired of the typical spots along the way. We stopped here and it was fantastic. Roast Beef & Philly Horseradish Melt were mighty good.

This place is great! Reuben sandwiches are a must, best around the area. Large assort of desserts. Not the best espresso if you're looking for that, tho. Go try it out!

I'm from Salt Lake City, UT and this is my first NY bakery experience! The shop was beautiful, old and had so much charm. The array of baked goods, pastries and old school candy was overwhelming in an amazing way! I got a coffee this time but will be back for a treat or two! While I was there many people came and went, the staff was very friendly. There's indoor and outdoor seating! Definitely will return!

I Specifically asked if any of the desserts i ordered had nuts of any kind in them. As I have a tree nut allergy. The employee said confidently " NO they do not". I know its not a nut free bakery that is why I asked to confirm it was safe. Well the cookies I received most certainly did have almonds in them. The second bite i took had a familiar taste of almonds. I cracked the cookie open to find loads of almond flakes. I panicked and called to ask yet again what is in those Rasberry tart cookies. And the same employee picked up and insisted they didn't have nuts in them. Fast forward through my swollen, itchy throat, lots of benedryle. I call today (the next day) ask for a manager and told her what had happened and asked AGAIN what is in those cookies and she confirmed they had almond flakes in them. With little remorse or apologies. Saying that "I shouldn't eat out if I have such a bad food allergy". And offered a gift card. I wasn't looking for any reimbursement or payment simply just wanted to look out for the next person. A nut allergy is not something to be overlooked and can be life-threatening. Im appalled at how the staff/manager handled this situation. Taking little to no responsibility.

I really wanted this place to be great but immediately upon walking in the girl walking around the back could have cared less than I was there. No one else in the place so I can't imagine why she would make me wait so long. Once she did acknowledge me she was cold and barely a hello or have a nice day. Ordered 3 cookies for 10$! (Wtf) to find they were old and stale. Everything looked really good but it's not the freshest and service could be so much better.

While visiting upstate NY we googled “breakfast” and a handful of places showed up around us. Lucky for us we chose this place. Everything and everyone was amazing. Their food tastes like home cooked meal, service is great, friendly staff and very quick. Coffee and tea were also wonderful. We got some sweets for the way but went through everything shortly after we left because everything smelled so irresistibly yummy 😋. Well, we finished everything but wished we could go back. Will visit again next time and we’ll load up even more.

Yelp
My wife and I loved the pastries here: 1. Cinnamon walnut cake 2. Mixed berry pie 3. Crumb cake They were not overly sweet. The berries in the pie tasted very real, no artificial flavor. The "crumb" on the crumb cake was a nice thick layer. Daddy liked it. Daddy will be back.

Yelp
Me and my coworkers got some breakfast and later that night we all got food poisoning, I thought I had it bad but then I found out my coworker shit himself on his way to work the next morning. Highly recommend getting food here if you don't want to go to work the next morning

Yelp
A nice option for lunch in the area. There js an abundance of baked pastries and muffins for sale, and their hot and cold sandwiches were popular during my visit. I went with. Chipotle chicken wrap which had breaded tenders, fresh veggies, and a spicy sauce. Not revolutionary but in the area it stands out. Service was great.

Yelp
I highly recommend the Brick House Bakery. I had an apple pastry and a hot apple cider. The pastry decision was challenging since there were so many delicious looking options displayed in the cases--including fresh apple cider doughnuts. They warmed up my pastry and it was perfect. The staff were pleasant and attentive. They also served soups and sandwiches. There were tables and chairs to sit and enjoy your purchase, which I did.

Yelp
So glad I found this great spot- fresh everything, bread and other yummy treats- I had a turkey chipotle bacon melt !!! Hit the spot- Fast and friendly service- outdoor and indoor seating available.

Yelp
I stopped because I wanted cookies. I ended up getting a chicken salad wrap too. The sandwich was very flavorful with no nuts. The cookies were good but I like a chewy cookie. These were a little dry. I would not turn it down but I will try something else first. The store was very clean and inviting.

Yelp
This bakery was just way I needed. Fresh made products, and a verity of different options I've never seen before! I had a bacon egg and cheese sandwich on a ham and cheddar bagel.... This was the post hangover treatment I needed! Not only was the food outstanding the staff there were super friendly and helpful. Being from out of town I'm so happy I found this gem before the chain restaurants!

Yelp
Unfortunately Brick House Bakery is VERY hit and miss. The short of it: SLOW service, inconsistent quality, and lack of attention to customer experience. The long of it: I've lived in the area about 2 years now and have visited brick house over a dozen times, and each time I leave either very satisfied or very disappointed, there truly is no in between. The upside to this is that I've been there enough to know what to get and what not to get. The downside is that there's a lot of things I can't get here. Brick House could be a one stop shop if their quality was consistent and their service were faster. Every time I've gone here I'm always waiting for at least 10 minutes just to order my food and after I've ordered, it's another 5 at least. The issue is the line, and the fact that the 1 person (on rare occasion 2 people) that work the front counter have to take an order, turn around and make the drinks at least for the order, give those to the customer, and then proceed with the next order in line. THIS IS EXTREMELY INEFFICIENT. Not to mention it makes for a bad customer experience. Along with this annoyance, as I mentioned before, their quality is all over the place. For example, I absolutely love their Italian cookies, delicious! But the pretty looking sweets and cakes are bland and taste old, as I'm sure they past their "sell by" date from whatever box they came out of. I also have ordered iced mocha lattes here twice and have watched with my own eyes each time, a worked put mocha syrup and milk in a cup with ice and stir it (they even looked around to see if anyone was watching). This among many others things are all contributing factors to the 2 star rating here. The saving grace is that they do keep the building and storefront very clean and manicured. But it appears that this comes at cost of the customer experience. From a customers perspective it seems that Brick House has almost become self-obsessed and cares more about their image and their lawn decorations, than the service and product their customers are receiving. Lots of room for improvement.

Yelp
such a little gem!! super affordable prices and the baked goods selection is phenomenal. Very friendly service and the vibe was very cozy! will be back for sure!!

Yelp
Oh my gosh! I love this place! I had a chicken salad wrap and it was hands down the best chicken salad I've ever had! The portion was huge and the staff were excellent. I only wish I could have gotten a pastry but I was so full from the wrap. Everything looked delicious! Just a great little, comfy place for breakfast or lunch with a super friendly atmosphere.

Yelp
This review is on SERVICE ONLY!!! Always loved the ice cream here. Showed up on a Friday night at 7:58pm and were waiting to place our order and finally at 8:01 the server showed up, said "we're closed" and flipped the sign to closed and turned off the light!!!! REALLY?!? What kind of awful customer service is this? He couldn't wait to take the last people in line? The employees need to take a lesson in customer service.

Dylan M.

Yelp
This place is the most consistently delicious cafes! I've ordered half of the menu at this point and each item is more delicious than the next. The turkey chipotle melt is the best sandwich in NY!! Love this place so much!!
google avatar

Yelp
This place is an absolute treasure. If they figure out how to make and sell Japanese bouncy cheesecake it is all over...

Ana L.

Yelp
I love this bakery and visit every time I'm in the area. My favorite items are the colossal muffins and many varieties of cookies. I picked up blueberry and blueberry/lemon muffins, and we also enjoyed some of S'more's cookies. Many wonderful pastries, cookies, coffee cakes, and other sweets exist; I wanted to try them all. They also serve lunch, coffee, and tea. It's a very popular place, so expect to wait a bit before being served. When I stopped in, there was only one server handling everything. But she did a fantastic job keeping a friendly disposition and getting everyone served.

Yelp
Very good food and desserts! So many desserts to choose from and very cheap! Service is great! And it's just a great place to be!

Yelp
I had stopped in before for a breakfast sandwich, bagels, or a donut and have always been pleased. We recently got married, however, and I reached out to the owner regarding cupcakes and a cake. He was so accommodating!! He offered us use of his stands, design ideas, etc. He even used frosting that didn't require refrigeration. Truly exceptional experience. He definitely took the stress out! The cake itself was a stunning birch tree with our initials, and the cupcakes were very nicely decorated to indicate the flavor. Thank you again!

Yelp
We wanted a place with a good breakfast and at least above average tea and coffee and we were so happy to land at Brick House. The server was great and so patient with our big group and multiple questions. We got donwiches, a ham and cheese bagel, and some sweet stuff too. They had ample outside dining and our dog could join us too! The food was all really good, tons of options, and we love supporting local businesses.

Yelp
I had the spicy chicken pocket. It was fantastic! The fried chicken was crispy, fresh and juicy. The chipotle aioli and spicy honey coupled with pickled red onions were delicious. The onion pocket roll was light and tasty. I also ordered a caramel apple bar, a bagel and cream cheese, and a beverage, with a total under $15. Great food at great prices. Highly recommend.

Yelp
My husband and I love this place! Can't get enough. Yummy FRESH sandwiches and bagels all the time, which they make on the spot! I love the pies in the Fall and such a variety of sweet treats to try during all the other seasons. Their milkshakes and frappes are addictingly good. The owners are nice, friendly staff on the daily. Hardly any issues arise but if they do, they will fix for you. I highly recommend them in any season to visit and eat. Sorry I don't have any photos, I eat it too fast to take any! lol

Yelp
This place is fantastic! The owner really cares about the quality of the food they produce here and has cultivated an atmosphere of hospitality that is so difficult to find in other similar locations. The price of the food is very reasonable! When you come visit, I would strongly encourage you to try one of their apple cider donwiches; it's scrumptious. The bakery is so good that my family and I will make the 40-ish minute drive to come and eat here at least once a month or so. Not only is the drive from the city beautiful, the food at the destination is even better. They recently put some outdoor seating as well, with the little outdoor patio area being my son's favorite. The little creek/stream's gently running water with the mountains in the distance is extremely relaxing and peaceful. I couldn't recommend it more; the place is beautiful in every season.

Yelp
My son has been working in Cobleskill, and on his way home he discover this gem. He gets a breakfast bagel, and brought us home. Half dozen bagels. It is the bast one I have had in years. Made the right way - right flour, boiled and baked. If you are ever up that way or don't mind a drive, stop by this place. Prices are very reasonable too!

Vicki B.

Yelp
This was our go to place while here for the weekend. Fresh food & excellent service!!! Nice to see that it's a family run business training their younger generation. Highly recommend.... We had breakfast, ice cream & baked goods. All phenomenal

Stephanie M.

Yelp
A great place to grab a snack , They have good breakfast sandwiches. The service overall is great but could be better

Yelp
We stopped by this bakery on the way to our family trip. The building looked nice, enough parking lots, inside looked pretty clean, and most importantly the workers there were very nice and friendly. They have a slip that you circle what you want for your sandwiches and my kids were taking time but the lady was nice enough to wait and we had small chat. We really liked how laid back there. Oh sweets there are kindly priced. I never seen those good looking sweets so cheap in Long Island or Manhattan. Sandwiches were good and coffees were good. I don't think I will go back because it is very far from my house but I really recommend everyone who come close to Cobleskill needs to stop by this place! You won't regret!

Lou G.

Yelp
Great place for breakfast or lunch. We visit about 1to 3 times a month and the chef still has our order started before we order. Friendly staff . Prices make this a good value.
google avatar

Audrey K.

Yelp
Food is good but pricey. I ordered a bear claw and got something else. Not sure what. An apple danish?
google avatar

Michael G.

Yelp
Our journey to this bakery started with a trip to a local used book store (that never happened...long story). The bakery had a wide selection of sweets as well as sandwiches for purchase. They also had some nice gifts that you could buy. Their cupcakes (only $1 each!!) were really well made and the frosting was tasty. I am a cake connoisseur and while I would have rather had a slice of cake vs. a cupcake (there is a difference!!), the cupcakes were delicious and well worth the trip! I always note "ample parking" on reviews of downtown locations because this is sometimes a problem, but no worries...parking was ample.
google avatar

Laurie M.

Yelp
Very nice selection of pastries at a reasonable cost. Fruity pebble cereal bar tasted a bit stale but fun idea! The macarons were good and the staff was friendly.
google avatar

Nick G.

Yelp
I went back twice since first time disaster and it seems they have their employee difficulties worked out. Pleasant & helpful both times. I believe the owner was there one of the times. The bakery was always consistently excellent. Just had a perfectly toasted salt bagel with cream cheese (my favorite) and it is delicious (still eating it as I type). Happy to have them open early for coffee and fresh baked goods!!
google avatar

Yelp
It's a mix of bakery, candy shop and ice cream parlor. Great items, had a breakfast sandwich there. Good service. Clean tables. Nice atmosphere. Has both indoor and outdoor seating.
google avatar

Yelp
First and second time we were there everything was great. Last time everything was stale. 4 different thing. Terrible. We won't be back.

Chris T.

Yelp
Clean; inviting; affordable and delicious! Wish they had this place when I was growing up. Best bakery I've been to in quite sometime!

Yelp
I went to the Brick House when they first opened. Let's not discuss that. Something has changed since. The pastries are great, and they serve a mean latte! I just couldn't get over what a change since they first opened. A few weeks ago, it was a beautiful, sunny day. My husband and I sat outside and I ordered egg whites, a croissant, and sausage. The eggs and croissant were just delicious! The only thing I was a little bummed about is they only have sausage patties, no links. Meh, patties aren't my favorite. Breakfast sausage - or even better, mild italian sausage - on the breakfast menu would definitely wow me. Last week, we ate inside. It's cute. They're definitely improving the interior. I ordered a breakfast sandwich on a pretzel roll - and of course, another latte. Wow, was that good! I also noticed, they have a really broad selection of turnover pastries - strawberry, apple, cherry, blueberry... Everything we ordered was great. My little suggestion to the Brick House is this: If you want to use a tractor beam to draw in more people for breakfast/brunch, throw some link sausages on the menu. Sausage patties are abnormal. Like greasy little disappointing discs. LOL But grilled link sausage? Mouthwatering... I'm not a professional at writing reviews - just a regular person - and because of the good service, quality food, amazing lattes, and delicious breads and pastries, the Brick House Bakery in officially on my radar. Not only am I planning to go again; I'm planning to go right now.

Yelp
Stopped in off the highway to stretch our legs then sit down for a sandwich around 3 pm today. Mom got a chicken salad croissant (awesomely overstuffed!) and I got a hot pastrami on rye. The pastrami was fine, but the house baked rye was outstanding. It is not often for me that the bread is the shining star of a sandwich, but this was exceptional. The young woman working seemed to be the only employee on duty, and though there were several other guests, she remained unstressed and friendly, and we got our order promptly. Well done, folks!

Kat C.

Yelp
Not only was this the most delicious place my husband and I ate on our trip, they were the nicest people. My husband left his keys there, and 2 weeks later they still had them and mailed them to us. Incredible food, even better customer service. 10/10 would recommend!
google avatar

Sarah L.

Yelp
Very cute, clean bakery. Latte was delicious and the pastries were good too. Would come back again when we come up and visit during the summer and early fall.

Sandi D.

Yelp
Tried their blueberry muffins this time. Wow! Delicious. Probably use an extra egg to get them so moist.

Maria J.

Yelp
Don't know about the breakfast food items, but the baked goods are awful. I actually went in wanting to try a loaf of bread but they did not look appetizing at all. They didn't look like they were even baked long enough. All in all everything we got was comparable to grocery store quality.

Jon S.

Yelp
Love their breakfast sandwiches, best I've had in upstate NY. Their fresh pastries are great too!! I Find an excuse to stop in here weekly.

Yelp
The very 1st review is a 5 star from someone with a new account and 2 reviews to their name..... comparing this bakery to Mrs. London's or Amy's Bread is crazy. This bakery is more in line with the Price Chopper and Walmart bakeries, except this bakery is not as consistent. The cheesecake is pretty good, I only tried one so I'm not sure that it's on par with cheesecake machismo in Albany but it's still a pretty good cheesecake. The baked goods have a non professional feel to them, like a home cook doing the baking. Some of the cookies are decent but pretty underwhelming and nothing I've had was worth going back for. I think the cookies at Price Chopper are better. I've stopped a few times to try a number of different things. I did get ginger snap cookies my first trip, they were good. Got them again a few weeks later and they were hard as a rock and I ended up throwing them away. Other than the bakery part, the inside feels like an afterthought which is weird. It's pretty bland inside. My 3rd trip to try the place I saw they had some cheap displays with random things for a bakery. Mallo Cups and other generic candy, gives the bakery a really cheap feeling.

Yelp
Nice fresh food and bakery is just Awesome. My recommendation is here if you are slightly tired of burger/diner style. It was refreshing "pit stop" on the way back from Howes Caverns adventure.

Cath K.

Yelp
Amazing! I can't stop thinking about how incredible the flavors are! I loved the strawberry and then fell head over heels with the raspberry!! Please try this place.... you are really missing out on true homemade local food made from the heart if you don't!!!! My mouth is so happy it met these cheesecakes!!! Thank you guys!!!xo

Yelp
We met with family for breakfast. Well greeted as we arrived. Excellent coffee. So many great selections and treats. Friendly and comfortable. Will definitely return on our next visit to Cobleskill.

Sue C.

Yelp
Best place for homemade cinnamon buns! They are super fresh and always hit the spot. Delicious breakfast sandwiches and bagels too

Brianna F.

Yelp
Best place to get a variety of different flavored bagels, amazing Italian cookies, and the BEST MACAROONS IVE EVER HAD!

Yelp
LIterally received second degree burn from latte today because the person waiting on me didn't secure the top and wow, I am done! I have had bad experience after bad experience here. I must be a glutton for punishment. From being overcharged for Christmas cookies (that were hard and yet no one made it right) to cheesecakes that are made with pudding, which spread out all over like soft Brie cheese instead of having that nice, firm texture. This was all bad enough. Underdone bread and pastry, I overlooked this, the dry sandwiches shoved in a panini press without butter (never complained about it), but the worst part of all is the really shoddy customer service (except for Katelin). But today when I went in to get a latte, a girl doing inventory who was at the register completely ignored me. No hello, nothing, and didn't call anyone over. Finally, another young brunette came over after a while to ask me what I needed. She started making my latte and per usual, didn't use enough Amaretto. Even if I ask for more, I don't get it (two squirts is not even an actual serving, I have the syrups at home, so know), but the worst part is, she didn't put the top all the way on my latte. When I went to pick it up, off pops the top, hot latte spills all over my hand burning it then all over the counter, and what does she do? Places the top BACK ON, tells me she's not sure why it came off, for me not to worry about the mess, and as an afterthought says, "Is your hand burnt?" Now, my hand is fireball red (I have pictures) and OF COURSE, the skin is burned, the lattes here are scorching hot and they all know this, but I said, "Yes, of course it's burnt, and my latte is spilled all over." Nothing. No response. She looks at the next customer and asks if she can help him. I had to wipe up the cup, take my now 3/4 of the way filled drink, and leave. I took pictures and came home to ice it. As of today, I had 160 points and I became a rewards member late to the game. So, this shows you the kind of money I spend here as I'm at SUNY Cobleskill, but not even our Wellness department will NOT frequent this bakery (due to receiving two inedible, gloppy cheesecakes and being told they couldn't get a refund) and now I am officially done. I have my own amaretto at home and will no longer be using this bakery. I never got an answer about being overcharged for a cookie order, they put the day old cookies out first, and sell them as if fresh (even supermarkets know better), and the customer service (again, besides one young girl named Katelin) is horrendous. My hand is burnt and I get a drink pushed at me after the lid is correctly secured, but nothing else. The owner just doesn't care and quite frankly, I was really happy to see a bakery here, but the standards aren't there and neither is the service. Really and truly disappointed, but you lost a customer today.

Yelp
What a great bakery! Stopped for coffee and crumb cake and both were excellant. The selection at the bakery was very good and it was a hard choice as to what to have for breakfast with friends. I had the crumb cake and was very pleased. The portion was generous to say the least and had ample crumb topping. The coffee was equally good, robust and freshly brewed. What i liked best was how clean the bakery was and how friendly the staff was. I would highly reccomend this bakery for a quick sit down breakfast, or to take home one of their many breads and baked goods, the cheesecake we had at home was delicious!. I will be back to try their soups and sandwiches at lunch and more cheesecake!

Yelp
I found this place by mistake. I had seen signs for it, but didn't know where it was. I had a raspberry turnover that was great. This place is a bakery with wonderful looking treats. It also sells crafts and gifts you can buy. Very nice place.

Yelp
Great bakery with awesome staff. You almost want one of everything. Canoli was top notch and rice crispy treats were dank.
