The Castle Hotel

Brilliant location. Rooms are so quiet. Beds very comfortable. TV's are a bit old but not a deal breaker. Restaurant and bar very accessible. Plus a great pub out the front door (the Hideout).

Had Sunday roast here today. It was probably one of the best roasts I've ever eaten. Layers upon layers of flavour and very generous portions. Lovely setting in the Wisteria room in the hotel itself rather than in Brazz. I've stayed overnight in the hotel before and the rooms are very comfortable.

We enjoyed afternoon tea here on the 3rd of December. The quality of the food was great and it was nicely presented. The room we were in was warm and comfortable. The highlight was our server, Livvy - she was the sole person looking after us and several other tables and she was a delight, friendly, warm, chatty, a credit to this hotel. We thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon tea and the service. Car-parking on site is a little expensive, but convenient.

Stayed there btw 1-6 Jan 2025. Loved the warmness of the staff, especially Molly, who was always on point. And gentleman in the evening (whose name I never got) who tried his beat to get me hot milk even though the kitchen was closed. Caris was nice too (hope I spelt that right) I hope they get a nice little bonus! It’s a quaint hotel with heaps of history within the walls. Me and my family loved it.

We chose this hotel because of location - central Taunton and 5 stars for being walking distance to everything we needed and has a car park (£10.95 for overnight parking). The staff were lovely and welcoming. The hotel is old, and decor not just dated but a little tatty/worn round the edges. The room was spacious with a lovely big bathroom. But I couldn’t find a fridge, so no fresh milk for morning tea/coffee. The bathroom had a shower-over-bath, while it’s a treat to have a full size bath tub in a hotel room this had the most horrible anti-slip strips stuck to the base of the bath. I don’t usually take a photo of the bath, but had to on this occasion. The black strips shown in the photo are like coarse sandpaper. Not pleasant, neither to look at nor stand on. The basin had multiple hairline cracks in it (needs replacing) and the bathroom light flickered - these last two faults I reported to the reception staff. I would have given 3.5 stars but can’t do half- stars so have been generous with 4 star review.

This is a lovely romantic place to stay if you were a couple but at the moment I’m single. The Castle is also a nice place to have a reunion with friends and the hotel is right in the heart of the town and near the main Somerset County Cricket Ground. The staff are very helpful and nice and will help you out if you ask them.

Went with a friend for Sunday lunch - superb! Should have asked for a small plate :) The stuffing was exceptional as was the whole meal including wonderfully tasty carrots, a huge Yorkshire pud, cranberry sauce, cauliflower cheese, greens, turkey, roast potatoes, pig in blanket, parsnip and so on - all beautifully cooked so well done chef/s! ~And the salmon starter also very good and beautifully presented. Many thanks! And the decorations were also lovely with a huge tree. ||Only moan would be having to pay for parking whilst a guest - seemed rather petty to us and I think any charge should be deducted from the bill.

Had a very nice lunch costing £230 but thought that charging for using their carpark after paying this amount was unnecessary. It's small details like this which leaves an unpleasant memory of what was up until then a very pleasant lunchtime. This annoyed me enough to not bother with this restaurant again and not recommend it.

Welcome to the Castle Hotel at Taunton. This historic Norman fortress has witnessed over 9 centuries of turbulent history. In 1685 the Duke of Monmouth's officers gathered here on the eve of the Battle of Sedgemoor, where they were defeated by the forces of King James II. The infamous Judge Jeffries held his Bloody Assize in the Great Hall of the castle shortly afterwards. Over 200 rebels from the Monmouth Rebellion were tried, convicted and then hanged, drawn and quartered. A further 800 were transported to the West Indies to work on the sugar plantations. The building we see today is a Grade II listed, 18th century reconstruction of the original Norman castle, but does incorporate the original east gate, Castle Bow, which boasts 13th century features.

Where to begin! Staying here was a highlight of my recent, and first trip to England. I was coming to do some family history work at the archives in Taunton, as well as visit Glastonbury Tor. When I read this was an actual castle with medieval beginnings, I was immediately drawn in. Then I visited their website and read a few reviews and I booked it! It's a unique experience to say the least. Coming through the front, revolving door had an old world charm that was very welcoming (even though I snagged my luggage). The front desk staff were all super friendly, accommodating, and professional. The room was huge! I don't know how I ended up with a suite but I certainly did not book it nor pay extra so, the only conclusion is they upgraded me because it was available? No matter, I was in awe! I cannot recommend this place enough, it's a castle! Unforgettable.

Our family loved the castle hotel it was different then all the hotels we had stayed in and we have been traveling for 10 days at a different hotel almost every night the staff were very friendly the hotel was around 600 to 700 years old what a great place for an event!! They had a bath tub so my my wife loved it instantly! The location was great just off Main Street, lots to do

It's good; and Brazz is the 'in 'place to eat. BUT you can get as good - if not better - at one of the many superb pubs around Taunton, and at a fraction of the price! The place is historic yet glitzy, the staff are attentive - but it just ain't worth the extra!!

This was mine and my girlfriends first proper meal out, from the start all the staff were friendly and helpful as well as very well mannered! The food was amazing! Perfectly fresh and succulent, all tasting very very good!! Would definitely recommend going out here for any occasion, very impressed with it all!
