Yelp
My boyfriend took me here for dinner as it's one of his most frequented takeout spots close by. I'd never eaten here before so I went in with no expectations. It's a tiny restaurant popular with takeout, there are maybe 16 seats inside.
I got an al pastor city taco ($4) and a shrimp city taco ($5). My boyfriend got a wet shrimp burrito ($18) and a tamarind Jarritos ($5). After tip, our dinner was under $40 which I thought was pretty reasonable for the city. The man taking our order was very nice and friendly, but he is the only person working the register and bringing food out so wait times can be a bit longer.
The timing of the food coming out was a little weird, my tacos came out almost 10 minutes before my boyfriend's order got to the table. I liked the shrimp taco more than the al pastor, but they definitely gave a smaller portion of shrimp. The shrimp were seasoned well and cooked to perfection with a nice sear on the outside.
The al pastor was disappointing to me, I thought it would be pieces of pork shaved off a trompo, but it was more like braised pork. It did have a pretty good marinade and the meat was tender, but it was missing the flavor of fire and char that a trompo would have given it. Also, no piece of pineapple either, so it was missing key components to what I look for in an al pastor taco. Tortillas were standard.
When my boyfriend's burrito finally came, I got to enjoy some of that too. It's definitely a big portion and worth the price. The shrimp were good again, and the burrito was topped with a red enchilada-like sauce and melty cheese. It was pretty good, but we were meaning to order the one with guac and sour cream. Overall, the burritos are good value, and I could see how this would be a staple takeout spot during the week. I'll try the carne asada tacos next time I come.
