The City Taqueria - Review - Lower Pacific Heights - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Lower Pacific Heights isn’t exactly known for its burrito population—you’re more likely to find wine bars or a certain famous kouign-amann—but The City Taqueria feels like a Mission transplant in the neighborhood. Whenever you’re north of Geary and need a prompt dosage of refried beans, the counter-service taqueria does the trick. Order the super burrito, with your choice of meat (if it’s a game-time decision, go carnitas). They can get a bit soggy as you’re eating, but for $15 they’ll fill you up. They also have baby burritos for less, along with tacos, quesadillas, and tortas. Plus, there’s plenty of seating in case you want to stay a while and make googly eyes at your foil-wrapped haul. Food Rundown Super Burrito You’re coming to The City Taqueria, you’re getting a super burrito. It’s fully loaded, to the point of being a little wet, but we’ve had worse problems. Carnitas Our go-to. A little crispy, a little tender, and well-dispersed throughout each bite. Al Pastor The al pastor here has a more braised texture than other versions shaved off the spit around town. But it’s still a decent option if you want a saucier meat." - Julia Chen

The 17 Best Burritos In San Francisco - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"The City Taqueria feels like a Mission transplant in Lower Pacific Heights. So if you're in the area and feel a sudden craving for grilled-to-order pollo asado, head on over. Another perk to coming here: the casual spot serves slightly smaller “baby burritos,” if you’re in the mood for more of a lighter—but equally delicious—snack." - Julia Chen 1, Lani Conway, Will Kamensky

Google
I only had the michalada (to go) but it was delicious. The restaurant seemed VERY authentic; I felt like I was back in Mexico. I would like to have tried some of their food. The service was pleasant but a little slow for how quiet it was.

Google
I LOVE this lil spot. It's not like the greatest Mexican food, but I'm from LA and that's not a humble brag it's a matter of proximity and culture. I've been real disappointed since I moved here in the choices for acceptable Latino food, excepting a few spots. This is one of them, not just because it's around the corner, not just because of the absolutely warmth the staff meets me with on appearance, but because it's pretty friggin tasty. I think I got a minor stomach bug once to be completely honest. But I've gone back. Take that as you will. Specifically: The salsas are tasty as heck. The nachos are LOADED and the selection of meats is diverse, with fantastic pollo verde y rojo; birria; camarones - todo lo que quieres, amor. The quesadillas are PROPERLY STUFFED and also, for lack of a more descriptive explanation, just darn tasty. Friend got the super tacos one time and them tacos was SUPER. Absolutely stacked. I will say - as far as a burrito mojado goes, I DO wish they were just a bit more mojado. But that's just my typa burrito. Do yourself a favor and get an agua fresca or a corona and have a little seat in the modest dining area. It's not such a bad place for a good chill. And it's a good place for a good meal. <3

Google
First time in SF 🌉 We found this Taqueria and the tacos were goooood, We got 2 chorizo 2 Pastor. Bigtacos, cilantro 🌿 onion 🧅 & Salsa just like a real street taco, 10/10 - One wet burrito 🌯 9/10 - Torta de Asada 10/10

Google
This is actually my favorite burrito place the staff know me cuz I've been there many times everything is always fresh.

Google
Favorite burrito in the city. Salsas are excellent especially the Habanero.

Google
The food ended up tasting pretty good, but on what planet is this considered a quesadilla? I just wish it had been listed as messy unwrapped burrito on the menu so I would have known what I was getting myself into.

Google
Our go to burrito place in SF. Large portions and delicious food

Google
Very, very good Mexican food. Came here with my family and everyone absolutely loved it. One member of our family said it was the best Mexican they’d ever had. Would recommend.

Yelp
$35 for two burritos, two diet cokes and chips and salsa. Ya, I'm sold. Food is consistently fresh, the carnitas is always great. Not super fatty, and the portions of meat in their burritos is above average. We've tried all the spots in the city, but for local taqueria this place is truly the best. I can't believe it's only 3.8 stars. Fast and always great service.

Yelp
The city taqueria has been my go-to burrito spot for about 14 years now- always loved it and highly recommended it to others for its consistent quality. Usually, my burritos are 50% very well seasoned meat- the reason I love this place so much. I came to get a burrito here recently and for the first time was highly disappointed. I ordered a regular burrito like usual and was met with a shocking ratio. My burrito was 50% rice, 30% pico de gallo, 20% meat. It took about two bites to even get to any meat. I hope this was a one off chance because this is the only burrito spot on my list. I'm going to have to search for a new spot now.

Yelp
Quick, cheap, no-fuss Mexican spot! I ordered a super quesadilla. Very large portions. It's not the best Mexican I've tried, but it gets the job done. I was also very happily surprised that a side of chips and salsa was less than a dollar.
google avatar

Adriana N.

Yelp
Wow, best carnitas I've had in years! I think it's even better than my former favorite, el buen sabor. I fear this is my new go-to. Amazing!

Yelp
My boyfriend took me here for dinner as it's one of his most frequented takeout spots close by. I'd never eaten here before so I went in with no expectations. It's a tiny restaurant popular with takeout, there are maybe 16 seats inside. I got an al pastor city taco ($4) and a shrimp city taco ($5). My boyfriend got a wet shrimp burrito ($18) and a tamarind Jarritos ($5). After tip, our dinner was under $40 which I thought was pretty reasonable for the city. The man taking our order was very nice and friendly, but he is the only person working the register and bringing food out so wait times can be a bit longer. The timing of the food coming out was a little weird, my tacos came out almost 10 minutes before my boyfriend's order got to the table. I liked the shrimp taco more than the al pastor, but they definitely gave a smaller portion of shrimp. The shrimp were seasoned well and cooked to perfection with a nice sear on the outside. The al pastor was disappointing to me, I thought it would be pieces of pork shaved off a trompo, but it was more like braised pork. It did have a pretty good marinade and the meat was tender, but it was missing the flavor of fire and char that a trompo would have given it. Also, no piece of pineapple either, so it was missing key components to what I look for in an al pastor taco. Tortillas were standard. When my boyfriend's burrito finally came, I got to enjoy some of that too. It's definitely a big portion and worth the price. The shrimp were good again, and the burrito was topped with a red enchilada-like sauce and melty cheese. It was pretty good, but we were meaning to order the one with guac and sour cream. Overall, the burritos are good value, and I could see how this would be a staple takeout spot during the week. I'll try the carne asada tacos next time I come.
google avatar

Andy L.

Yelp
Carne asada burrito was below-average, it was dirty inside, and a 4% credit card surcharge is crazy. Doubt I'll be back.
google avatar

Andrew P.

Yelp
Moved to NorCal about 9 months back and finding authentic and good Mexican food is hard. But this place was great!! The Horchata is made fresh, the tacos were great and the quesadillas were delicious! Great place for a quick delicious meal. Loved it!

Yelp
I came by for a late lunch cause of a appointment nearby. The interior was pretty standard, plenty of tables. The menu is on 2 TV screens. I got the super steak burrito and it was good. The meat seemed to be extra crispy. I don't know if they left on grill too long or they did it on purpose to have that extra crisp. The burrito did take awhile to come out. Average price nowadays at $15.xx If dining in, they will bring your order to your table. The service at the counter was nice. 4% extra if paying by card Street parking only

Yelp
I was in the area last night and felt like eating a burrito. Starting with the food here, It's the kind of place you go to when all other burrito places are too far and you don't want to make an effort with walking or door dashing. I consider this a late-night eatery even though it closes at 10. The service is fast and their baby burrito is decent-sized (bigger than my hand) so I didn't bother ordering the super burrito. The burrito's tortilla was a little wet from the outside, the stuffing was uneven and not wrapped as well, but it did the job as I was starving when I went there. I went there because no other affordable take-out place was nearby and open at that hour but I don't think I would go out of my way to eat there again. Also, I don't think this place gives me vibes that it is clean so I would strictly only come here for a takeout order

Jesus Z.

Yelp
Friendly staff, good portions, decent prices. Burrito tastes great. The only thing I'll say as a personal opinion is the green salsa has too much cumin. It's over powering. Always looking for a good taqueria; I'll be coming back again for sure. Would recommend.

Victor C.

Yelp
Horrible burrito! I ordered a super burrito no beans/no crema. I guess they took it upon themselves to substitute a large quantity of rice and large quantity of pico de gallo instead to make it look big! As a result of the pico de gallo that I never ordered inside my burrito (I hate pico de gallo, hence why I never ordered it) The burrito was extremely cold! Pico is cold! No need to put a pound of it inside a burrito. I took two bites and threw it in the garbage. I feel bad my garbage can had to taste that.
google avatar

Patrick J.

Yelp
I love your food! But the past three times I've ordered from you, you've gotten my order wrong. Food = excellent Family digging into messed-up orders = not so great
google avatar

Juan F.

Yelp
Ordered a shrimp and steak nachos , the carne asada was burnt , lettuce was brown , the guacamole was not fresh , the chips was stale not happy with the food wanted to complain and get a refund but was embarrassed, there was also a fly near the garbage cans . Will definitely not be back .
google avatar

Edie N.

Yelp
This place feels like a family owned mom and pop shop and I love it! The gentleman that rings in your order is the sweetest gentleman and always so kind and welcoming. It feels like you're eating at someone's house.. the food is that good! They don't skimp out in the portions either and everything is plate size so you'll definitely have enough to take home with you. So delicious and made me feel like I was back in LA. 10/10 would recommend this place a thousand times over!
google avatar

Chikodi C.

Yelp
I came here three times in my first week because I like the California Style Burrito that much! For the typical price of a San Francisco burrito you get very, very full! It would be nice if they included chips and salsa with the burrito, as an extra touch, but it's probably not necessary for quelling hunger.

Nikki M.

Yelp
Literally Ordered my food at 5:11PM VIA phone for pick up. Got there at 5:38 and the order wasn't even taken. I go there all the but this was horrible service and very inconvenient. Definitely recommend going around lunch time.... Not later in the day.
google avatar

Lejonae D.

Yelp
Everything on the menu is good, bro. Literally I never had one bad experience here. The food and the service is TOP TIER!
google avatar

Ivan Z.

Yelp
Okay the place is decently affordable and the burrito is alright? I think the thing that it had going for it was that it was spicy. I unfortunately didnt take any photos because I wolfed it down because I was so hungry (got back from the gym and live nearby). I got the regular burrito with carnitas and black beans. very fast and great. what did terrify me was that I did see a small rat scurrying around the place which is.... uhhhh... definitely a health violation. would maybe come back in a pinch??? wild
google avatar

Joan N.

Yelp
Affordable, good quality food. Most employees at work prefer it. They have fast service and the people who work there are friendly. The cooking are is open so you can see it's clean. Love the salad bowl and the tacos. I recommend this place

Joss G.

Yelp
Dude they gave me an Old flan, I think it's been sitting in the fridge for about a week it was so bad and the texture was so disgusting! I love flan and know how to make it I should have just made some myself rather than spending my money. Im so upset! Do better! Why sell someone something that has been sitting in the fridge for DAYSS! WE LITERALLY GOT SICK FROM THIS TAQUERIA ! will Never be back again
google avatar

Victoria L.

Yelp
I love their baby burritos. I usually do take-out and when I say easy on an ingredient, they always make the balance right!
google avatar

Shannon P.

Yelp
Bomb Al pastor somewhere other than The Mission District?! I'm shocked. My gf mentioned she wanted to show me this place and it didn't disappoint. I got the super burrito w/ Al pastor & black beans and it was fantastic. Next time I'll add extra cheese. Very large and filling. Easily could split this or save for later. Very unassuming taqueria on Divis but wow this is a winner and will be my new go-to taqueria in the neighborhood.

Lailene C.

Yelp
Quick and friendly service. Carne asada burrito would have been amazing but the meat was unfortunately burnt and hard. Such a bummer! The rest of the ingredients seemed great but the meat was no bueno

Ava Gueits ..

Yelp
So good and they gave gluten free tortillas!! Will be coming back. Delicious food and great service.
google avatar

Redd S.

Yelp
Super chicken burrito is great! There is no other Burritos place better than this Mexican restaurant!
google avatar

Tim C.

Yelp
Looks like I'm walking in to an alley in Tijuana. Great wet burrito spot. Price is good and close to work.
google avatar

Corina E.

Yelp
Great Mexican food! Ordered the carne asada fries with everything! Also the horchata is great! Perfectly sweet and cinnamon flavor.
google avatar

Shana A.

Yelp
Their al pastor is NOT al pastor. This is some shredded stewed pork cooked in a crockpot. There is nothing authentic about this place. Anyone giving this place rave reviews has never been to an authentic street/taqueria before. Sauce/salsa should be given on the side, period. I have NEVER ordered from a taqueria to go and not gotten salsa/sauce to go. The burritos my niece and nephew ordered were poorly put together and fell apart immediately. I would never come back to this place.

Tony M.

Yelp
As good as--if not better than--any hyped burrito you'll find in the mission. More expensive because of the neighborhood but what can you do. Gentleman who has taken my order every time is incredibly friendly.
google avatar

Ben A.

Yelp
I once bought two tacos in San Francisco for $25. Twenty. Five. Dollars. I know, some of you wouldn't pick up $25 if you dropped it on a hotel bathroom floor, but having grown up with fifty cent street tacos sold from a roach coach BEFORE taco trucks became a fusion entity unto themselves, that felt excessive... even with the cloth napkins I used to stuff into the collar of my shirt (just kidding, but I really wanted to just to prove a point.) The City Taqueria doesn't play that game. Granted, those LPH rents must be high, but this place has tacos ranging from $3 to $7, depending on the contents. Bean burrito is 6 bucks, and the menu has the usual fare served at the order counter and enjoyed at one of their little tables on on the go. I enjoyed the wet burrito here, served smothered in sauce and filled with meat, cheese, rice & beans, and pico. Delicious. Hole in the wall Mexican food at its finest. Bring a twenty and you'll walk out full, with change in your pocket.
google avatar

Kate ..

Yelp
absolutely amazing shrimp burrito! everybody is always so kind and helpful, and all the food is phenomenal. best burritos in the city.
google avatar

Eva L.

Yelp
My favorite burrito spot in the city. They grilled all the meat fresh for each order, and the marinade is unreal. Lots of different meat options, including shrimp and fish. A fun hole-in-the-wall with good energy. Staff are super nice too!
google avatar

Mono L.

Yelp
Steak and shrimp burrito is very juicy! Every bite is amazing! Best taqueria on Divisadero! I recommend I will come back
google avatar

Lynn C.

Yelp
So I did come back......several times actually. I absolutely love it! I guess I don't like lettuce in my burritos. Never did. I've tried their quesadillas, fish and shrimp tacos and they are all super good! They also fry their chips in house. This place is the only place I get my burrito/taco fix. Yes, I've tried the ones in the mission. This place tops it. HANDS DOWN. I used to live in San Jose. And go to Jalisco's. I couldn't find a place in the city similar. And this is totally similar to it! Glad to finally find my fav spot. I drive all the way from the other side of the city for it! Wish they could add lengua to the menu. Highly recommend coming here!

Kenneth C.

Yelp
This place took 16 min to get a burrito and taco when the place was empty. The food was ok would not recommend the pastor. The good thing about this place is the quantity of the food, worth the price the amount of food they give you!
google avatar

Pete E.

Yelp
Don't sleep on the burrito. Best in the city, including El Farolito and all the Mission spots. It doesn't get the attention it deserves, probably due to its slightly random location on Divis.
google avatar

Catherine N.

Yelp
I got the Camarones al mojo de ajo plate and it was just ok. The shrimp was a little salty, but good with the Mexican rice and black beans. The plate came with a quarter cup each of sour cream, guacamole, and pico de Gallo - all of which I wasn't really sure what to eat with since there was no chips or tortillas or anything like that. I was most let down by the tres Leches cake, which somehow managed to be dry. The cake was almost sandy, instead of tender cake I was hoping for. I have to hope there is better Mexican food in SF, but would not say it would be coming from here.
google avatar

Katherine Y.

Yelp
Wandered in after Pilates with no expectations and was blown away! Ordered the shrimp diabla plate and it was phenomenal - so flavorful, and the spicy version packs a punch. Comes with all the fixings - tortillas, guac, pico, sour cream, Spanish rice, sautéed peppers, and beans. Also got a veggie sope - this would pretty average, would not get again. Fair warning, it took 30 minutes for my to-go order. They were understaffed and swamped with delivery orders (and this was on a empty Tuesday evening) Next time will make sure to call ahead, but will be thinking about the shrimp plate until then.

Karen W.

Yelp
If this place were a one night stand. I would be hooked and coming every night begging for more. The food is so dam good..who needs to go to Mexico anymore. I ordered a super shrimp taco and a street taco and I am full and happy.
google avatar

Kaeli M.

Yelp
Ordered the city tacos, one with carnitas other with chicken. Definitely preferred the carnitas and everything was super tasty. The only thing I can really complain about is the price--I've had cheaper tacos in the Bay Area. But for the city I guess the price is normal.
google avatar

Matt G.

Yelp
From a Golden State Warriors fan's perspective, I like the name of the taqueria, "The City". The configuration of this taqueria is very unique. It is not big from the outside and very narrow inside, but it is long with surprisingly a good amount of seating and dining area. From the newly-installed digital menu, the prices are just as competitive as anywhere else. I ordered the Grilled steak super burrito for $10.00, which is the average price. You place your order through the chefs in the very back, who cooks and grill your meat and tortillas right in front of you. Basically, you know and visualize your meat are cooked fresh. All the other condiments are colorful and separated in another part of the kitchen. You have to like that for freshness. The chef knows how to grilled the meat to perfection. The steak was very flavorful without being overly-burnt. The super burrito has a perfect amount of the condiments. The melted cheese was very sharp. Sour cream was not excessive. The guacamole was green. And the hot salsa was a nasal-opener. I don't go to that part of Divisadero Street often. But the burrito is just as good as any. And yes, I also liked the name. I am a big fan.

Axl r.

Yelp
I noticed that this restaurant is overcharging the sales tax. The sales tax rate in SF is 8.65% but this restaurant is charging 13% which is more than the allowed amount. They charged me 76 cents more for my order. Doesn't seem like a big amount but it is a big amount for large orders and especially if they do this on a daily basis. Please double check your receipt and i think city should take a note of this. Food is decent.
google avatar

S. F.

Yelp
Was maybe the spiciest tacos I've ever eaten! And absolutely delicious! Two tacos fed me for two meals. Definitely will be back soon.

Sandra O.

Yelp
So good! Quick, kind service at a great price! Have grabbed to-go and had Uber Eats, always a good experience.

Joel L.

Yelp
I ordered a taco salad with chicken and received no chicken on it. When I called I told them about their mistake, they said they can't do anything about and that next time they'll add more meat to my taco salad and hung up on me. Here's the picture since they said they needed proof annoying experience frs

Sankofa D.

Yelp
food is great but service is terrible. ordered ahead and still had to literally wait 40 minutes for 3 tacos. made me late to work. I should have stopped going after the first 3 times I had to wait more than 20 minutes but today was crazy. dont eat here unless ur willing to spend the day there. only thing saving it from no stars is the food.
google avatar

Matthew S.

Yelp
Solid little burrito place. I had the carnitas which was really good. Tried someone else's pollo asado which was not as good. Prices are fine not great. But worth another try. They have a pretty big selection of fillings.

Sharie W.

Yelp
Not a bad spot, in fact I've heard great things about the burrito, but eat at your own risk. I had the steak city taco and super fish taco but it did not sit well with my stomach and I threw it up later that night.
google avatar

Luc L.

Yelp
The hole in the wall place is spectacular for some street tacos. Loaded with meat, cilantro and onion and served on two layers of tortillas. I turned two tacos into 4! I had the carne asada taco with a spritz of lime. Yummmm. One star knocked off because I couldn't tell if you had to order first or if there was table service. Staff was friendly tho!
