Trickling Springs Ice Cream Is Back at Union Market — Sort Of - Eater DC

"The Creamery at Union Market opened last week in the vacated stall formerly occupied by Trickling Springs Creamery in the Northeast food hall. Daniel Burdge, the former retail manager for Trickling Springs, runs the ice cream counter with his wife. The Creamery plans to use Trickling Springs's old ice cream recipes, working with an unnamed farm in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Currently, it stocks Van Leeuwen ice cream and plans to partner with multiple ice cream brands. Ice cream costs $5 for up to two flavors, with options for cups or fresh waffle cones. The Creamery also sells Pequea Valley Farms yogurt, Nature’s Yoke eggs, and milk from Deliteful Dairy in BPA-free bottles." - Tierney Plumb

Google
I've been here once before. The first time, I got a milkshake, but I forgot the flavors that I chose. This time, I landed on a grapenut (a popular Jamaican ice cream flavor) and pistachio milkshake along with two delicious cookies. The milkshake was exquisite!! Cold, flavorful, and just the right balance between thickness and liquid. I decided on a snickerdoodle for one cookie and a chocolate chip for the other. The cookies were crispy, yet so soft and moist. The chocolate chip wasn't your normal kind. It looks like whole pieces of chocolate were melted inside of the cookie and ran gooey when eating/breaking it. I'll definitely be back and highly recommend folks visit, too!

Google
The Creamery at Union Market is a must-visit for ice cream lovers like me! While their ice cream is the main draw, they also have a great selection of milk, butter, yogurt, and cheese available in the coolers. And don’t forget about their sugar cookies, they are great! If you're looking for drinks, they carry a nice variety of juices, kombucha, soda, and water as well. The ice cream flavors are amazing, with options like Cookies and Cream, Grapenuts, and Nutella Biscoff—delicious! Prices are very reasonable for the quality, and the staff is super friendly, always letting you sample flavors before you commit. Definitely recommend stopping by!

Google
Run, do not walk, to this ice cream stop!! Probably the best ice cream I've ever had. My bestie and I are huge ice cream snobs, and it's a shame we went here on our last night in the city cuz otherwise, we would've gone back every day! We were seriously tempted to go back on our way to the airport to get some. When (not if) I travel back to DC, this is my first stop!!!

Google
We set out to find Gelato. We find this place instead. My husband got two scoops in a freshly made waffle cone. He chose the non dairy chip mint and coconut pineapple. I got butter pecan in a still warm, freshly made waffle cone 😋🤤. We thoroughly enjoyed it. Would highly recommend!! I forgot to take pics 🤦🏽‍♀️. The gentleman who helped was so kind. Wish I got his name.

Google
The Creamery at Union Market Review: Great Ice Cream and Service The Creamery at Union Market offers fantastic ice cream and top-notch service. They always let us try samples, making the experience even better. The cookies are also delicious, making it a great spot for a sweet treat.

Google
Yummy ice cream!! And I had the cookies here and they were pretty good as well. My husband had their chocolate milk and he said it was some of the best he’s ever had - and that’s that he loves chocolate milk and had tried so many. I got a couple different flavors of ice cream and they did not disappoint. Note that this place is in a market of other stores/shops so the seating is communal. If it’s really busy, it’s hard to find seating.

Google
The Creamery at Union Market Loved the experience here! I had a combo of chocolate and pistachio on a waffle cone—absolutely delicious. The place is clean, well-organized, and has a welcoming vibe. Amaya and Antonio were both professional and kind, which made the visit even better. I’d love to come back with a group of friends to try more flavors. Thanks for the great experience!

Google
I drive all the way from Northern VA for this ice cream. It may be the best I’ve ever had. RUN , don’t walk there! Amazing and creative flavors that are clearly made with the best and richest ingredients. Flavors are also seasonal/temporary so you may fall in love with a flavor and go back again and it’s gone. I almost cried when they stopped the Oatmeal Raisin flavor.

Yelp
Cute little spot. I had to give 5 stars because of the oatmilk mint ice cream!!! The service is great especially with greetings from the cute little baby. I have 1 request though. Can you make a few sugar cookies without sprinkles?
google avatar

Gabriella C.

Yelp
Loved the creamy consistency of the ice cream! I appreciate how delicious the vanilla base is and the addition of toppings (Reece's cups and Oreos) really elevated the flavors! Quick service! Only thing is that it is hard to find seating to enjoy the ice cream since it's in Union Market! Overall would love to come back here though!

Yelp
Really creamy! Chocolate peanut butter was divine. Wish there were more chocolate-based flavors but soo good!

Yelp
One of the few places I enjoy hand dipped ice cream, as I normally prefer to find soft serve. I've had their cookies and cream before and it was delicious. I tried the butter pecan on this trip, but it was lacking pecans so I'll probably switch it up again on the next trip. It was still very good, though. I also love that they support other local businesses with their small market items. I just wish I had gotten a pint or so to go!

Yelp
Small ice cream shop inside of Union Market offering ice cream and cookies. There aren't a ton of flavor options (only 3 or 5 available when I visited) but the nutella biscoff cookie flavor I did get was delicious. With tax it was $4.89 for a single scoop kids cone.

Yelp
The Creamery has been on my list to try for a little while now and I'm so glad I finally got to stop by. I ordered a scoop of cookies and cream for myself and a scoop for my daughter. The serving size was perfect for a quick treat. The ice cream was so tasty and creamy. The Creamery was easy to locate once inside so I made a beeline. The service was quick and friendly. I would definitely return.

Yelp
I've heard good things about The Creamery and I'm glad we all tried it this past Friday night -- definitely made a positive impact on our evening :) KIDS SCOOP - 4.45 A pretty small scoop but perfect for a mini sweet treat. They let us sample the flavors here and the lemon blueberry was definitely my favorite. The first thing I tasted was the tart and strong citrus flavor of the lemon, which hit hard. Then the flavors slowly divulge into something sweeter like fresh berries. A good amount of people in our group got the lemon blueberry, pistachio or Bischoff cookie flavors. The ice cream were incredibly smooth and creamy, and not too sweet. I'd recommend giving The Creamery a try if you're in the Union Market District!

Yelp
My second stop in D.C. on the cookie excursion. I ended up getting ice cream there and saving the cookie for later. I was really pleased with the ice cream. I ordered biscotti and cream and it was blissful. The little golden brown pieces of biscotti cookies immersed well throughout the sweet ice cream to my delight! I savored every small bite to make it last as long as I could. The cookie was another story. The chocolate chip cookie was disappointingly flat and lacking any potential. A giant disappointing miss for the cookie.
google avatar

Zabrina H.

Yelp
Highly recommend the cookies and cream flavor! It has chucks of a cookie and chocolate chips. Creamery has such good ice cream I just wish they had more flavors! They had about 8 to choose from.
google avatar

Aarti B.

Yelp
Skip the ice cream and go for the cookies! The ooey gooey chocolate chip cookies with gobs of fudgy chocolate in every bite are hands-down the BEST chocolate chip cookies in DC! The single split scoop of Cookies and Cream just didn't hit the mark. The ice cream is very sweet and the toppings are sparse and not well mixed into the vanilla base flavor. The toppings need to be more evenly distributed and embedded into the ice cream. The former ice cream shop, Trickling Springs Creamery was soo goood!

Yelp
The Creamery is a family-owned and -operated dairy shop, sourcing local milk and ice cream, that's located in Union Market. We came here after having lunch, to get some dessert/snacks to go. We ordered: +the Strawberry Swirl ice cream - this was made with oat milk; a little bit sweeter than I thought because of the oat milk, it was actually pretty tasty; it seems to be more of a sorbet-like texture than ice cream +Chocolate Chip Cookies ice cream - not sure if I liked the texture of this ice cream, as it tasted a bit grainy +Chocolate Chip cookies - the chocolate chips were big and chunky, and the cookies were still warm; the chips were still melty and so good! +Chocolate 'Lava Cake' cookies - this had a nice crisp exterior, and it really feels like you're eating a chocolate lava cake in cookie form! Staff here were super friendly and patient; they were able to explain their offerings well and made some great recommendations. Note that if you purchase their bottles of milk, you can return them to get a refund on your deposit. +tasty cookies! +located inside Union Market +parking in the UM lot

Yelp
Excellent ice cream featuring different flavors in addition to some regular ones. The ice cream I homemade and is fresh and creamy! I tried a peach with coconut and it was fabulous. Also they bake homemade cookies daily and I had to have a chunky chocolate chip which was wonderful! Will be back soon.

Yelp
We were inside of Union Market for quick little bites and decided to get a little "digestif" as I like to call it. We stopped by this delicious ice cream shop with various selections and I had the pumpkin ice cream. It's creamy, the flavor isn't overpowering with notes of nutmeg. I think it's the perfect fall dessert after getting stuffed with all the wonderful selections inside of the Union Market! I'll definitely give them another visit and try some other flavors. Also, the staff were very friendly and quick! -ODL Follow my IG: @AOEAT

Yelp
The name says it all. The ice cream is so so rich and creamy and I want it in any weather. Favorite flavor is hands down the chocolate chip cookie. They sell chocolate chip cookies separately as well and they're incredible.

Lily K.

Yelp
Honestly overpriced, the ice cream is fine but it's not worth 6+ dollars for a scoop.

Yelp
Stopped by here for some after dinner dessert. Came on a Saturday so it was pretty busy, expect a line. We ordered a small cup of the strawberry chocolate and a cup of the chocolate chip cookie. I'm a guy who's big on the chunks in his ice cream and this place doesn't disappoint. Big chunks of chocolate chip cookies folded between a creamy vanilla ice cream. My girlfriend really liked her strawberry chocolate. She said it tasted like fresh strawberries. I also recommend their actual chocolate chip cookies. Pretty unique since it's like layers of chocolate as opposed to just chips or chunks of chocolate. Definitely a solid desert option around the area.

Yelp
The best ice cream I have had in DMV area ( and I am VERY picky when it comes to ice cream). Must love whole milk . Ice cream is reach, flavorful, not too sweet, just perfect

Yelp
As a part of my birthday ice cream crawl a month ago, we stopped at The Creamery at Union Market. It was pretty good. The Creamery fits perfectly within the space of Union Market. The flavor selection is limited, both in terms of number of flavors and uniqueness of flavors. Still, I got an appealing pairing of a scoop of Chip+Mint and a scoop of coffee. The flavor was...pretty good. Both bases could've been a bit stronger, and the chips could've been richer as well. The texture was very creamy, and could even be toned back a touch. That said, the base is a terrific starting point, and with a bit stronger flavor and bolder mix-ins could be quite excellent.

Marnie R.

Yelp
Best ice cream outside NYC. I'm so picky about my ice cream. Gave thrown out many scoops. Tasted a few and had cookie dough today. So yummy.

Yelp
If you're ever in Union Market with a sweet tooth, check out the creamery for some amazing ice cream. With great variety the creamery serves ice cream on waffle cones as well as in small medium and large containers as well. I went with two scoops of salted caramel and butter pecan in a waffle cone ($9.42). I should've asked for a third scoop since the scoops were kind of small but I had just had pizza so I didn't want to over do it. The ice cream is so good. THE END. Take my word for it, you won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Yelp
I had the traditional butter pecan ice in a waffle cone. Thick, but not too thick and creamy like a milkshake. Everything was pleasurable except the service.
google avatar

Joanne S.

Yelp
I popped into Union Market on the prowl for a quick dessert and The Creamery delivered! I tried a scoop of their Peach Crumble (4/5) - it was solid as an ice cream although there was a bit of ice crystallization. I also wish the base was a little more interesting than just vanilla but the toasty oat crumble and peaches were quite the nice addition!
google avatar

Yelp
Tried this ice cream at Union Market on a winter weekend and it was fantastic. I had the coffee and salted caramel flavors. Very fresh, creamy and the taste was incredible. This place must be hopping mad during the warmer months. It is a little pricey but you are in Washington DC. Everything is expensive in this City now.
google avatar

Anya B.

Yelp
I've heard so many good things about this place and was so glad I finally tried it. Two scoops was more than enough for two people--we had strawberry and salted caramel. While I usually like harder ice cream with more of a bite to it, this was perfect. Super creamy without being soft serve, and sweet without being too sweet. I only wish that I'd tried one of their gorgeous-looking waffle cones, or that they had more flavors available.
google avatar

Hannah C.

Yelp
Nice ice cream place in Union Market where Trickling Springs used to be. They're still ramping up, but they have a nice selection of ice creams by the cone or cup, as well as artisanal ice cream, milk, and yogurt from a couple nearby farms. I tried a small cup of their chocolate peanut butter ice cream, and it had a really nice flavor and richness to it. I found a few ice crystals in the center, but not that many. Overall, I think this has the potential to be a really great spot. They're definitely still starting up, but what they have is pretty good and I imagine they'll do very well as the weather heats up.
google avatar

Bill W.

Yelp
My understanding is that the creamery is really just trickling springs 2.0. That is, trickling springs delish ice cream without all the fraud and bankruptcy. I'll take it. If not the best, this is definitely one of the best ice cream joints in dc. It has great standards as well as baller unique offerings like grape nuts and chocolate chip cookie (not cookie dough). We are probably gonna be coming here on the regs as our standard ice cream joint. Go here and support local!
google avatar

Ashley M.

Yelp
I tried a small of 2/3 oat milk flavors mint chip and cookie crumble.. Both were really delicious and I didn't miss the dairy at all! Very solid for a non-dairy ice cream! Definitely give it a try.
google avatar

Sonia K.

Yelp
As one of the only dessert places in union market right now, it hits the spot. I got the cookies and cream small cup. The ice cream was creamy, there were a good amount of chunks, and the small size packed quite a lot. There was a little mint aftertaste that I was unsure about but it was VERY subtle.
google avatar

Austin G.

Yelp
For all you Trickling Spring fans out there, the Creamery is what replaced it when they went bankrupt. The store is set up in the exact same way and sells juice, dairy products, etc. They are starting to make their own ice cream and have a few flavors like vanilla, cookies and cream, chocolate, coffee, etc. The ice cream isn't as good as its predecessor, but it's not bad. The staff are very nice!

Adiam G.

Yelp
Went here yesterday 4/2 with my boyfriend. The guy that scooped our ice cream was super nice (and is the only reason for the two stars) but the girl at the register couldn't be bothered to say a word to me. She was having a conversation with another girl behind the counter and turned to see what I had, put it into the register and turned back towards the other girl to keep listening to whatever story she was telling. I was trying to tell her that I was also paying for my boyfriend's ice cream but it took a minute for her to realize I was still standing there. She turned her head towards me again, I told her I was also paying for the second ice cream cone and she typed it in and turn back to her conversation again. It was pretty rude. The ice cream was good, not anything special, but the interaction at the register was so off-putting, I won't be coming back.

Yelp
Love this place! Ice cream is the star here but lots of other great stuff to offer. The owners, Daniel & Jessica, can often be found here and could not be a nicer couple or better with kids. First, the ice cream. Great flavors and taste. Recently added soft serve which is an added treat -- pumpkin and vanilla can currently be swirled...and makes the perfect combo. In addition to the scooped/packed ice cream, they sell several pints from Van Leeuwen (including several vegan options), McConnell's, and Dolcezza. Van Leeuwen favorites: Brooklyn Brown Sugar Chunk, Mocha Cookie Crumble, Pumpkin Cheesecake (seasonal) McConnell's favorites: Eureka Lemon & Marionberries, Cinnamon & Oatmeal Raisin Cookies, Pumpkin Pie (seasonal) We also get our eggs, milk and cheese products from here and have been pleased with the suppliers they feature. Definitely snag the Hook's 5-Year Sharp Cheddar Cheese. Cookies (chocolate chip w/ sea salt flakes; snickerdoodle) available here too, and you can see them making them on site. Waffle cones are also made on site. Finally, they carry the addictive Michele's Granola (the locally-made stuff that South Block Juice uses in their açaí bowls).

Susan G.

Yelp
The ice cream is delicious--very fresh and rich without being too heavy--and the waffle cones are so tasty! I have been twice and can't wait to go back again--the chocolate milk and cookies look delicious, too.

Gary K.

Yelp
Visited the Creamery today for the first time. Highly recommend the coffee ice cream (it was so good we got some to take home). Kudos also to the very kind and generous store manager (he was there at 4 p.m. on Mar. 6). We will definitely return!

Dave C.

Yelp
We stopped by after lunch and picked up a quart of cookies and cream ice cream. We all agreed that it was some of the best ice cream that we've eaten! It had a smooth creamy texture, nice vanilla notes and was not overly sweet. Delicious!

Danny D.

Yelp
Friendly and courteous staff. The ice cream here is full of flavor and thick. Do not have to worry about rushing to eat or carry out before it starts melting like other ice creams.

James G.

Yelp
This is a great place in the old Trickling Springs spot in Union Market. I'm in here a few times a month and love trying the different ice cream pints from McConnells and Van Leewans. I have noticed recently that these aren't kept in stock very well now that the shop has introduced their house brand. I hope that this is temporary because Van Leewans is my favorite ice cream and this spot used to have one of the best selections in town.
