Where Shenseea Goes For Caribbean Food, Wings & Peri Peri Chicken

"I've been using The Door for many years. My favorite time to dine there is at breakfast. I just feel like early in the morning, the breakfast just hits. When I don't order in the morning, I usually get some steam fish or stewed chicken with bammy and rice. But my favorite time to eat from The Door is when it just opens. When I'm getting in from an early flight, I go straight to The Door and I'm dying and have some ackee and saltfish, or some saltfish and salt mackerel rundown. Their pea soup is amazing. Their chicken foot soup is amazing." - brennan carley

Where to Find Excellent Caribbean Food Around New York | Eater NY

"Christopher Roberts and Joan Lewis opened this Caribbean restaurant in Queens in 2000 and quickly found fans of their homey dishes like Jamaican curry-laced goat and steamed snapper with okra. The specials are often the best option; some nights include stew peas with pig feet and goat stew." - Korsha Wilson

The food was great. Best brown stew chicken/rice and peas my wife and I have had in years. The garlic mash potatoes were amazing too. We’ve been trying find good island food for a while with no luck. But that changed! It’s good if I’m being this dramatic Beware the drinks STRONG.It wasn’t crowded and the food came on time. But I can imagine that on Sundays or just certain days it can get packed. I paid less than I expected which is always a plus. I will be back with my friends and family.

Google
Thank you, Michelle, for your services. You did a wonderful job 👏 and Michelle "checks" on us were on point. I was a bit skeptical in dining in the Queens area, but we gave it a shot. The service was excellent. I'm a bit skeptical about the parking... the church parking lot was offered to me to park there, and I was afraid to park. The host said they would take full responsibility for me parking there, I would not recommend parking at church if you are not a regular guest there. Be very cautious. It does have a warning sign. Read carefully that could be on you. Everything was acceptional, except the part where I'm not sure who failed to understand, when a guest said to the server at taking main course order, I'll take my dinner to go but please put my goat curry in separate container from my rice, because I want eat my peas and rice later, and I want the gravy to go with my white rice I have at home, I'm sure it was not my server, even though she was very busy everything was 👉 on point 👈 from her end. I only found out when I got home, I was very disappointed "see pics" I wished some people would listen to the requests. That is the reason for the 4 star. My server did her part in putting my order in, I told her we were not in a rush and fire our meals when we are ready. Everything is enjoyable, not too much salt or spices, I would possibly give it another shot sometimes in the near future only because the manager came and checked on us... I appreciate all the services. Some of the servers need to smile a little bit more. It will be a lot more inviting. Please don't be too hard on your employees, thanks to everyone who serves us, kudos kiddos 👏

Google
This restaurant did not live up to the hype for me. We were able to get reservations on short notice for a group of 16 and parking was available. Service was average since we barely saw our server. Some meals took longer than others to get. We loved the calamari, but the jerk chicken and stew snapper were a bit dry. The veggies were barely touched because the green beans and carrots were too hard. The music played was enjoyable though.

Google
The food is worth the wait if you’re walking in without a reservation they do their best to accommodate!! Depending on how busy of a day you might have a wait for the food but the free bread basket does help, the cornbread was great my toddler loved it. It was colder than I dressed for in there but very clean. Bathroom could use more frequent maintenance.

Regrettably, the recent dining experience at this establishment fell short of expectations. My order of Rasta pasta, which was ostensibly penne à la vodka, was unfortunately misrepresented. The pasta resembled penne, but it was accompanied by a pronounced taste of raw vegetables, including broccoli and cauliflower. My son’s curry goat was disappointingly small, with the goat meat being excessively chopped. My mother’s order of oxtails was also unsatisfactory, as they were not seasoned and the cabbage was neither cooked nor seasoned. The rundown fish, typically a curry and coconut blend, was instead flavored like an entire can of Carnation milk. It is unfortunate that this restaurant has lost its quality, despite the excellent in-person customer service. However, the experience was marred by a rushed and unprofessional phone order process. As a result, I will refrain from patronizing this restaurant in the near future. I am also considering seeking a refund for my recent order.

Google
Extremely disappointed in The Door have been ordering with them for many years. Seems that their quality of service has gone down the drain ordered a dinner plus a side of macaroni pie and unfortunately, while eating the macaroni pie, realized that you had mice droppings in the pie thank God I pay attention to what I eat, but who knows if this has Happened to many other people who haven’t been paying attention Extremely disgusting and extremely disappointed in my Caribbean cuisine. I have referred so many people to you sure you do not need my recommendation, but I will definitely let people know what happened tonight.

Google
This is my second time dining at the Door for dinner. This is a nice place to celebrate an anniversary. The food was good. I had the crab cakes for appetizers, brown stew chicken for the main course, and strawberry cheesecake for dessert. I enjoyed everything. The oxtail is good. I haven't tried any of the other drinks, but the pina colada is a great choice. Excellent service.

Google
Still one of my favorite go to Jamaican spots, although I find that the food used to be better back in the days. The servers are always pleasant and polite. My go to dish will always be curry goat and fried fish entree.

Yelp
The door has been on my list of restaurants and I finally went and I will say it was definitely worth the wait. The customer service was definitely on point. From the entrance to the entire time dining. The food was fresh and everything taste amazing. I even placed a to go order for my husband and son and they said that this was the best Rasta pasta and salmon that they have ever had. The restaurant has a large bar area and the dining area is large also comfortable seating. It was my birthday weekend and they sang happy birthday and the cake was also delicious.

Yelp
I went there for my nephew's graduation dinner. We had a private area but the service was horrible. We waited so long just to get napkins and when my niece saw napkins m, she got them for us and was chastised by the waitress for taking them. Another family member asked for extra sauce twice and didn't receive it until the end of dinner. My daughter never received her drink refill. The food was good, bu t the service was horrible. On the other hand, we have ordered from them with no problem and the food was great.

Yelp
Ordered ackee and salt-fish with no oil with fry dumpling and extra dumpling ... these individuals who work there had the audacity to give oil soaked dumpling to customers... straight in the garbage. I hate this restaurant... the hype is all bull crap. It's a hit or a total miss.

Yelp
The Door has been one of the best Jamaican restaurants in Queens for decades. I haven't been here in years since I rarely come to this side anymore. I was in the area so I grabbed the chance. Curry goat is one of my fave foods and the Door's is on point. The food quality is still A1 unlike many Caribbean restaurants post pandemic. They use a good cut of goat so you don't have to pick through shards of bone or fat. They also use a nice grain of rice. A small was $16. I was so disappointed that carrot cake was not good. It was so dry and not sweet. Back in the day the cake was so moist it would almost fall apart and it had plenty of raisins and shredded carrot throughout. This cake was not that. I don't know if they have a new baker or what but they are not it. Prices are high. A gallon of sorrell is $60. But the food is really good so I will continue to patronize them
google avatar

Yelp
The take-out food from The Door is just as delicious as the food served in the restaurant. The chicken soup is flavorful and reminiscent of the soup your mother used to make. Please call ahead to place your orders to avoid long wait times and crowds. The take-out area is clean, but determining where the line starts and ends can be a bit confusing.

Yelp
I am so embarrassed I started writing this review over 5 yrs ago. The food was so delicious I had the oxtails, rice and peas and cabbage. It's been so long ago I forgot what my daughter had but I know she enjoyed it. Very nice restaurant my daughter treated me for my retirement. It's definitely time to go back.

Yelp
Sorry no pictures. However I do recommend them. Food is delicious. Fresh. Steamed. They do cater to all your occasional Evebts.

Yelp
I tried their "Oxtail Rasta Pasta", and it tasted old. Didn't understand why the oxtail was separated from the pasta. When I asked the bartender about why the food was terrible, he seemed unenthusiastic to even respond to me. The customer service sucks. The bartender gave me a "to-go"cup, for a margarita while I was sitting at the bar. It's giving homophobia!!!!
google avatar

Renee C.

Yelp
Excellent brunch but can get a bit crowded at peak Sunday hours. The food at the door is always delicious, it's like grandma is in the kitchen. The variety of their brunch is very impressive. The staff is friendly and efficient which is a breath of fresh air for a Caribbean restaurant.

Cliff R.

Yelp
I just visited this establishment. I always support black businesses but I'm left disappointed. Why does saltfish rundown take over an hour...and still haven't received my order. The system that you have is not working. It is crazy work to have patrons waiting this long for an order. I could have made it myself with the time I waited. If an item is not readily available then let the customer know instead of wasting our time. To add insult to injury left with a patty and a juice. The juice was frozen solid and the spinach patty was Luke warm at best. You guys have to do better!
google avatar

Jenny R.

Yelp
I call ahead for my order because I don't want to wait and the lady who took my order told me it would be ready in 15 minutes which turn into a 2 hrs wait and the food was disappointed. They are very disorganized with their order intake, everyone that was there did not get their order in time. What's the point of calling ahead. They need to get it under control. I will not be going back, There are too many other Jamaican restaurants in nyc with better service & food. Fishnets & tropical jerk restaurant are always on point .
google avatar

Yelp
I haven't been here in years and the food is just as great as I remember. We got beef patties for the ride home because we were starving and it didn't disappoint. The patty had god flavor and the perfect amount of beef that you got some in each bite. The curry goat was tender and fell off the bone. The brown stew chicken wasn't too sweet and had a nice kick to it. The oxtail was flavorful and tender. The jerk chicken we paired with oxtail gravy and it never fails to disappoint. This spot is just as good as I remembered it from when I was younger. We went there specifically for takeout because the weather was nasty and we were craving Jamaican food. The large plates are enough for 2 people or 2 portions for yourself. The veggies were perfectly cooked and the cabbage still had a great crunch to it. 10/10 would recommend. Can't wait to go back soon!

El A.

Yelp
I love their customer service. Their food is always fresh. The Thanksgiving menu is very unique and tasty. My customers loved the jerk, turkey, and the candied yams they are also very reliable for corporate catering, always on time and never any issues with the food
google avatar

Yelp
TLDR: If you want authentic Caribbean food in Queens, come here! The oxtail and mac and cheese doesn't disappoint. Throughout my 5 years coming here for birthdays and church celebrations, The Door remains a Caribbean staple. The mac and cheese and the oxtail have been consistently delicious, even though prices significantly increased... Treat yourself to the red velvet and rum cake if you're someone who loves a something sweet after a meal. Although the service experience may vary, the restaurant remains clean with an elegantly simple aesthetic. For a hassle-free visit, consider making reservations, especially on busy weekends when the place tends to get packed. If it's too packed, I'd suggest using their takeout option for a cozy taste of homemade Caribbean flavors in the comfort of your home.

Yelp
Very good Jamaican cuisine in a white tablecloth and napkin restaurant. Good wait staff. The only decent place to eat in the area.
google avatar

Yelp
Many West Indian residents in Queens point to The Door when asked to recommend the most authentic Caribbean restaurant in their borough. This Jamaican-owned restaurant sells food that many other West Indian restaurants don't: Mackerel Rundown, Salt-fish and Okra, Brown Stewed Cow Skin, Tripe and Bean, Ital Stew and Stir Fry Tofu. The Door also sells desserts not seen in most West Indian restaurants: Black Cake with icing and Caribbean Rum Cake. The only negative thing is that they do not sell homemade Ginger Beer or Sorrel like some of their Brooklyn counterparts, and too bad that the Jamaicans do not make Souse (pickled pig feet), which is a delicacy prepared by most other islanders especially on New Year's Eve. I order only from The Door's take out store and only on weekends because parking is easily available then. DON'T EAT AND DRIVE: The Caribbean Rum Cake is so rum intense that it smelled on my breath at first hello. It tastes like the baker had rum soaked the cake for hours on end, so be sure to wait until you get home to eat it to avoid risk of a DUI!

Yelp
"The door used to be so much better". A statement I have heard from so many people, well I wish I was able to experience their peak era bc now it's not good at all. The food is mid at it's best. I ordered a combo meal - oxtail w/ rice & peas & jerk the other day & my bf got a stir fry chicken dish w/ their take on Rasta pasta. First of all idk what Jamaican spot is making stir fry & idk why would he try that. But the jerk was ok, it wasn't horrible but I've def had better & now as for those oxtails that everyone raves about? Esp on the reviews here? Absolutely disgusting it had no flavor or taste. Most of it was thrown out. I will never order from here again. It's only getting 3 starts bc my bf actually liked his meal & even tho this was an Uber eats order. They did follow & pay attention took to our instructions & the servings were plentiful but just didn't taste good lol. Sucks :/

Yelp
This place was everything! Best Jamaican food in queens HANDS DOWN! The staff are extremely friendly and very professional. The food and drinks were great also. If you're looking for a high class Jamaican restaurant look no further!
google avatar

Leiton C.

Yelp
Overpriced for what you get!!! Little bald head bartender has a pretty rude attitude on him, seems he hasn't been laid in quite some time. Food was okay - but def not worth the price- food should be HALF the price they charge!
google avatar

Zachary L.

Yelp
Really good service great atmosphere and professional staff. I went there because I was really hungry for food and the food was excellent. The food didn't take that long to cook for three people. No complaints, overall one of my favorite restaurants in New York. (I don't live in New York) 5 stars for sure try it yourself! Awesome restaurant! -Zachary L on Yelp.

Yelp
I used to come to this place all the time before the pandemic on Thursday night for the buffet dinner. This was my first time back since the pandemic and the food is still good. I had the jerk chicken with Rasta pasta. It was my first time having their Rasta pasta, but it won't be my last time. I also got a small oxtail dinner which came with about five pieces of oxtail but they were tasty. I can't speak bout the service or ambiance because I got my meal to go.

Yelp
Ate here for the first time on Saturday for an event. I've heard great things about the food so I was excited to try it out. Overall the food was good. We had a nice salad along with salmon, chicken strips, oxtail, plantains, fish cakes, curry chicken, rice and peas, sautéed veggies and Mac & cheese. We also had fresh made lemonade and fruit punch. I especially enjoyed the fresh salad, the veggies and the mac and cheese. I'm not a fan of oxtails but all others at the table seemed to really enjoy it. The curry chicken and salmon were just ok for me but overall the food was cooked well & flavorful. Everything was served family style for about 20 ppl and there was still plenty of food left over. I would definitely recommend and go back to The Door. The people are friendly and with the variety of food you can definitely find something that suits your tastebuds. Definitely give them a try.

Shelly T.

Yelp
I chose the catering service for my son christening celebration and lets just say the food was HORRIBLE. They turned a special day into a disaster. They served me the bottom of the pot for white rice. The chicken still had feathers on them with fat, and guts in them. Curry chicken had an old smell it was not cooked same day. They used Chicken Wings (which barely has meat on them when you are doing stew and curry). I would NEVER use them for catering services much less go back and dine in. Dine is what i usually do but after dealing with the customer service to help with this matter i wouldn't waste my time.

La I.

Yelp
Food was okay. We had a misunderstanding and the employee and supervisor was very rude poor hospitality. Dislike rude people that have no common sense. People need to use their brain. Will never order from them again.
google avatar

Nicky S.

Yelp
Chicken and shrimp stir fry is truly delicious. It brightened my Christmas Eve. A good portion of shrimp and chicken- such a nice ginger garlic flavor. I'll come back just for this. Thank you! I needed a tasty meal
google avatar

Yelp
It's not often that I feel the need to update my reviews on Yelp and when I do, it usually doesn't mean that my experience has gotten better. However this is one for the Yelp record books. I recently dined in at the Door for Father's Day with my family after a non-COVID related hiatus and must admit that I am a FAN! The shining star was the food as it should be! Everyone in my large group ordered something different from Oxtails to Brown Stew Snapper to Curry Lobster. Everyone ate in silence because the food was so good and well seasoned. We even had a last minute addition of a side of Macaroni & Cheese that was shared by the table which was marvelously cheesy. Even the fruit punch hit the spot with its tropical blend of fruits. Shoutout to the staff because the customer service was great especially given that it was a busy holiday. We made reservations and they were really good about still accommodating us when part of our party was running late. The server was personable and attentive. I definitely recommend dining in here but if you're craving Jamaican food on the go... be patient and call ahead! Your tastebuds will thank you later.

Larry D.

Yelp
1Customer services needs much improvement 2 brown stew oxtail no good 3 drinks where good tho 4 they out there own suggestion for tip 5 soup of the day was good 6 they wedding cake wasn't that great colors inside where cool tho

Amina B.

Yelp
I've been to this restaurant several times and always enjoyed the food. However last night the food was subpar. The Rasta pasta looked old, like they just reheat, the honey grilled salmon was horrible too much sauce! Not a good experience!
google avatar

Jewel M.

Yelp
Gave The Door another try recently and did not regret it. All special instructions were followed. I received extra gravy / jerk sauce on the side and oxtail gravy on my rice. They also sent a side of fresh delicious corn bread with my order. Nice lil treat lol. I was def a happy camper! Also decided to try their Rasta Pasta this time and I was surprised as to how good it was. It isn't as good as Footprints' Rasta Pasta, but it definitely comes close and I already know i'll be ordering it again when I'm NOT counting calories.
google avatar

Yelp
Food is okay Service is poor for large groups mid week Ambiance None. But the only restaurant in area with a table cloth
google avatar

Yvonne H.

Yelp
Great food, great drinks. Make sure you try the spicy appetizer called chicken escovitch strips.
google avatar

Yelp
I have had food from the Door before but for catering. Their food was absolutely delicious. I decided to do UberEats and ordered Stew Peas (with pigs tails) with white rice and plantain. It was SO GOOD. It was packaged nicely, they followed my instructions and the food tasted fresh. Hopefully I will do a sit in, in the restaurant one day.

B C.

Yelp
Food and service were good. We had Curry Goat which was tender, delicious and a great spice blend. Watch for bones! We also had the Roasted Chicken and Shrimp. More mild but extremely flavorful.

Curtis S.

Yelp
The Door is a restaurant (in Jamaica Queens) that I've been going to for the last 20 years or more. From their Caribbean Breakfast to their Lunch and Dinner Menus, they never disappoint. Sunday August 11th 2024, I had a private room reserved (40 guest) for my daughter's 13th birthday party. The room they setup was exquisite and the staff and service was top notch. The owners who have become like family to us were on vacation and left the restaurant in capable hands. I live in San Antonio now (4 Years) and it's just been very difficult trying to find good Caribbean food. My girlfriend who's roots are from the Caribbean, raised in Brooklyn and who's mother is a fantastic cook is the closet thing to good Caribbean Style Foosld here. She said while in NY, she wanted Pizza, Street Hotdog and some good Jamaica Food. She was so impressed with the overall experience, she called her family and type her own reviews and ratings. I would give the door a 4.5 but the system doesn't allow you to. Thanks to Chris and Joan(the owners) for keeping their standards post pandemic as some other places have fallen off tremendously.
google avatar

Kat E.

Yelp
This place was recommended to me from a friend who said this is the number one Jamaican restaurant in the area. So for my first time I ordered roast fish. This dish contained roasted snapper with the provisions included. Provisions are the boiled vegetable and crackers. This meal was rather tasty that I was glad I ordered 2 plates. I ordered this dish ahead of time and had to wait for about 34-40 min for it to be done. I wasn't to mad since that let me know that they make it fresh for you. This place was packed which led me to believe that it is a good Jamaican restaurant. I recommend it.

Yelp
Good service great food and amazing drinks. Beautiful ambiance and very clean the food was hot fresh and didn't take long to come out.

Yelp
Very good food! I lived the Apps and main courses. Super cute decor that makes you wanna dress up. The servers are also really nice.Must visit spot.

Yelp
Food is very tasty. One of the better Jamaican restaurant to dine in or have a private dinner party. I had my husband's 50th birthday dinner and was very pleased with the service.
google avatar

O'Mari J.

Yelp
It's the door that opens to a world of Jamaican flavors that brings back fond memories of back home. The food is delicious! The service is outstanding! The ambience is well suited for any occasion! The surroundings are clean and tidy! There's ample parking and an efficient takeout counter.
google avatar

Yelp
I only recommend because it's a staple it became a household name but if you looking for real authentic back ah yawd food you better off going to a local spot I won't mention no names but if you know you know!

Yelp
Here's the Scoop! My Sorority Sisters and I came for lunch. Our reservation was for 1:00 pm Saturday afternoon. It was a rainy cold day but the atmosphere was very welcoming at the door. The hostess greeted us and when all of our Sisters arrived we were seated. There were several large groups already seated but the noise level was next to nothing. Our wait staff Avion, Kevin and Michael were on their "A"" game. Very polite, attentive, quick with service and chivalry on point. We were served hot corn bread while we waited for our entrees. The Food was hot, seasoned and delicious! Check out my pics. I ordered the brown stewed chicken with waffles! My my my my goodness!!! As you know chicken and waffles is usually fried but they offered it with choices. The choices were fried chicken, curry chicken, jerk chicken and brown stewed. I couldn't believe it. So I asked Avion for some help. My chicken was seasoned to the bone and falling off. The waffles were fluffy and buttery. I'm drooling writing this. My plate also had fresh sliced sweet cantaloupe and grapes. Yummmylicious! I've never had any food I've ordered unsatisfactory. The food here seeks to please. I'm so happy they've survived the pandemic. Reservations are a must. However they do take walk-ins but there's about a 25 min. wait. They have takeout right next door and an attached parking lot. There's also parking across the street in the Rochdale Mall lot. Portions are a nice size and prices reasonable. If you're ever in the area you must come and have a delicious meal. You won't be disappointed! I'll definitely be back!
google avatar

Pascale A.

Yelp
I came here with a friend to celebrate her birthday. It was recommended to us by her Jamaican in-laws. We were all very pleased with our meals and drinks. The cocktails were nice and not weak. Their menu has an extensive selection of both authentic and fusion cuisine so it may take you a while to decide but you won't be disappointed. Everything we had was delicious. One minor drawback... I wish the meals came with more than the only two pieces of fried plantains. Easy enough fix is to order an additional side. The venue appears spacious even with two private areas for special events and the staff was friendly and attentive. Bonus, the adjacent church parking lot is made available when services are not in session.

Yelp
I have been going to this restaurant for years. I no longer live in NY, but my mom does, so I make it a point to order from this restaurant every time I visit. Did they change the cook or something? I have been ordering the same dish, curry goat and my mom always gets the oxtails. The curry goat was prepared with hardly any curry and there was only one plantain slice on the plate! The oxtails weren't as flavorful and my brother got the curry chicken which was fair, but also lacking curry and half of the plate was bones! When I went to pick up our order, I wondered what happened to the long lines in the lobby. After eating the food, I now know why. Now I have to find another good Jamaican restaurant because I won't be returning.

Yelp
Hey ya'll. Sooo... I went to this place a little over 4 years ago for the first time and have returned at least 12 times since then. All 10 times were fantastic! Loved the service, the ambiance, the fanciness, the people annnnnnd the food!!! That was pre-2021. I went once last year and just left the restaurant tonight and unfortunately the food was a disappointment both times. It wasn't bad, just fine. The rice and peas, the plantains... very blah. The oxtails were pretty ok. I've had better... I remember it being sooo tasty, but now... the food is... ok. I probably won't recommend it much anymore because I just don't love it as much, but it's definitely a more than decent sit-in restaurant in an area where that is lacking. Perhaps I just went on 2 off nights. Lets hope so...

Kisha D.

Yelp
food was cold they didn't have what I originally ordered asked for something else they didn't have that either and when I did get food it was full of bones and cold ! first and last time !
google avatar

kimberlee F.

Yelp
Food tastes good and the portions are decent. The dine in service is usually timely and courteous, once they were crowded and everyone ate at different times at the table as meals came out staggered. Take-out is usually good. I love their breakfast: salt fish cookup, the calaloo, the porridge, and their beverages made for the restaurant.
google avatar

Allen B.

Yelp
The food here is extremely fire, I had the chicken soup and the jerk chicken. Service on point, food comes out fast and the rice and peas and cabbage are tasty as well. The interior is kind of old school but I liked it, my wife felt they need an upgrade.

Jan B.

Yelp
Delicious Carribean Dishes and Drinks! Celebrated my Birthday there last year and loved the Ambiance and Respect from the Waiters.
