LA's Best Martinis & More, According to Kyle Mooney - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"“Another great Eagle Rock spot. My favorite drink there is called the In-A-Gadda, which has mezcal in it. They have a great karaoke night. They have stand-up. I like a place where people are nice to you, and this was the first spot I went to with my wife after we got married, so it’ll always have a nice spot inside my soul.”" - brant cox

Came in to grab a drink with a friend. It was karaoke night and the sound was actual torture. The singing would've been fine, but the system was cranked to 11 and sounded terrible. Literal screeching. Couldn't hear a thing my friend said. Had to leave.

Google
Love love love this spot. Every day is crackin', whether karaoke, live music from local artists, stand-up, or rotating dj's, it's one of the best watering holes with the most mellow atmosphere. Definitely fam here. ER.

Google
This bar is my favorite hang. Karaoke on Thursdays is better than any spot in the city, any night. Bartenders are all friendly and quick with service. The smoking patio out back is very comfy and nice to chill at. And Dave does a custom kitchen service on peak days out back. Drink prices are very fair. The crowd that frequents this place is very cool, and very friendly. I can have a great time with great people for a reasonable price, any time. 10/10

Google
DO NOT SUPPORT. About three months ago my boyfriend was roofied at this bar. We realized that we never reported it because we’re still dumbfounded that this actually happened in Eagle Rock. I thought I should probably tell people before they spend their money at this place and get drugged. Do not support this business. If anyone else has gone to this experience, please be sure to report it right away.

Google
Cute little bar in Eagle Rock with incredible ambience and super reasonable prices. Went for happy hour and was impressed with the beer/cider selection. Old Fashioned was decent, but for $9 and Four Roses as their well bourbon, I can’t complain.

Google
Cool vibes, locals hang out for sure.Bartenders are very accommodating and are on point with serving your drinks. Music that was being played Funk R&B soul Rock and roll. Not too bad.

Google
Met up with someone here and it was my first time. This place turned out to be pretty cool! Has a cozy, dimly-lit, tavern-esque vibe but with classic funk and rock tunes playing on the speakers. The music was a manageable volume most of the night with it only getting slightly difficult to talk over a couple of times. It wasn't a crazy party place, but also, if you're looking for a quieter, more intimate setting, this place probably isn't it. There's a few booths, a few tables, a few TVs, a small dartboard in the corner, and some additional seating at the bar. They have some good stuff on tap, and in bottles. They serve cocktails, as well, and have happy hour (5p - 7p, nightly) discounts. Overall, I'd recommend this place, especially if you haven't been before.

Google
One thing leads to another and you find yourself at the Black Boar, sipping a great drink next to entertaining, friendly people listening to the violent femmes. It felt surreal but maybe just another night at the Black Boar. Classic bar. Really friendly and knowledgeable barkeeps.

Yelp
The Fable is one of my favorite local spots. Welcoming staff, great drink selection, nice happy hour, big and breezy back patio, cool (but not too cool) crowd. I fit right in. In fact, everyone does! I love the beer and cider selection. I always find a new one to obsess over. This time it was the Coco Colada - a coconut, mango & lime cider. Wonderful. The karaoke nights (M, Th) are my absolute fave. The song list is extensive so shake your nerves and put your song in early. You might even be able to sing two. They also have comedy and live music nights which you can track on their Instagram. They don't have a kitchen but they host food vendors frequently.

Yelp
First time back to this bar since pre Covid days. Back then it was called the Chalet, then the Black Boar and now the Fable: same interior...dark wood and divey like an old world pub .And they still screen old movies here. Karaoke night tonight. Very lively crowd who are fully into the karaoke. Me still likes dis' place.

Yelp
For as many times as I've been to The Fable over the past several years, I've found that every stop ends in good conversation with interesting people. The outdoor patio is great for al fresco cocktails (or for meeting up with that friend who smokes). The bartenders are wonderful and attentive. There's also a nice selection of Seltzers, Cider, Hard Kombucha, as well as a fully stocked bar of spirits. Feeling adventurous or just indecisive (like me)? Go for the Mystery Shot. You'll never know what you'll get because it's a new surprise every night. Bartenders do the honors with their secret recipe so when you're ready to play shot roulette, just go for it! If nothing else, make sure you have a chaser. I recommend the Triple Jam cider or a Blueberry Lemon cider on draft to wash it all down. Or a gin martini up, with an Uber home.

Yelp
I'm not sure why there's any bad reviews on this place, all I know is that they're a bunch of hatersss lol. Every time I come here every bartender I've seen is absolutely awesome and so personable. I'm literally writing this sitting in here. I feel so bad for not remembering the other bartenders name but at the moment Sam and Mega are coming to mind. Just seriously good people. Security guards too. Love you guys and thank you for being my fav bar. I wish I could leave a heart emoji :3

Yelp
I have so much fun on Thursday karaoke night! Be sure to go early to hang with KJ Two Shoes. The bartenders are great! So friendly and cool.

Yelp
Reminds me of a british pub in the best way. But the cocktail was mediocre and the bartender was not particularly friendly. Pizza smells good.

Yelp
I really like this place, been there twice and both times had a really good time. The only thing I would change is the volume of the music, just seems to be a bit too loud.

Yelp
I've had drinks here several times when it was The Black Boar. Wasn't too thrilled when it became Old Chalet. After I moved a new owner stepped in and now it's The Fable. A friend of mine recently came here for drinks and enjoyed it, so I figured I'd check it out. Inside is reminiscent of a dimly lit tavern. There are seats at the bar, plenty of booths for gathering with friends, a dartboard, a cozy fireplace, and classic movies on tv when sports aren't on. They also have a lovely back patio area and additional seating on the sidewalk. I sat at the bar and ordered one of their House Cocktails ($13). A dollar from each sale is donated to a local charity every month. The house cocktails have creative monikers. I selected the Town's End (Songbird floral Liqueur, St. George Vodka, Grapefruit, & lemon juice). It was refreshing and delicious! I did not expect this place to have such a creative cocktail menu (of course they serve the classics along with beer & wine too). The selections all sounded fantastic. The bartender was friendly and the vibe here is chill. The Fable also has some great deals for Happy Hour and food vendor pop ups on weekends. It's a great neighborhood bar to meet up with friends, watch some sports, or just unwind after a long day.

Yelp
Dive bar energy, but it's a good one if you're into that! They have live music often, which definitely brings in a crowd. And it's basically the only place in Eagle Rock open past 11pm...the bartenders only acknowledge you if you make them, but they have a good variety of drinks. Their back patio is definitely worth the hang!

Yelp
Came for Wednesday night standup comedy, and had a good time. Sounds like it is normally outdoors since they have a spacious patio, but with the rain it was a tad stuffy with everyone inside. It was quite lively, and everyone was friendly and supportive of the comedian. Had a nice sour beer, they have cocktails and wine available too, with QR code menus at the tables. I parked on the street into the residential area.

Yelp
A nice dive bar in the middle or Eagle Rock! The ambiance was dark and laid back, the makings of a great dive bar. They have a darts board and plenty of seating. The service was attentive and friendly. We didn't know what we wanted to get right away so we started with a mystery shot. The bartender explained that one bartender makes the mystery shot and tells no one else what's it in. Whatever it was, it went down smooth. After the shots, I stuck with a Harp lager and my girlfriend got one of their specialty vodka Parking was a little difficult, we ended up parking about a 7 minute walk away - overall not too bad for LA.

Yelp
Go here if you'd like to be greeted by a couple overworked and grumpy bartenders who seem pissed to be busy. Not sure why these people chose to work at a bar on Saturday nights. I literally said "how are you?" and the bartender responded with "what do you want ". Sorry for being cordial. Of course, you can make up for that bad service by getting a weak $13 cocktail. Good times. What happened to the community feeling of Eagle Rock? Oh yeah, we bused our own table because they were so busy

Travis D.

Yelp
Great atmosphere. Great free comedy show on Wednesday nights. Great prices and generous pours on the drinks. Also dog friendly!

Marie C.

Yelp
Our go-to spot! Will never get tired of this place! Service & ambiance is perfect for a any nightcap.

Yelp
I came here for my friend's casual birthday party. His party started at 7 pm, but taking public transportation I got there at 6:15 PM. I got there during their daily happy hour (even on the weekend). Their HH whisky is Four Roses Bourbon which I had as a highball. HH is a very lively time, and with such cheap prices, I get it. After 7 pm, and the end of the happy hour it turned into a much more mellow place to relax and chat with a large group. They also had a burger place in the back for food which was nice.
google avatar

Eduardo A.

Yelp
They have Old Speckled Hen! And the live music was really really great. Everyone is super nice there:)

Amy M.

Yelp
I love the local vibe here. We sat in their backyard and it was very pleasant. We enjoyed our happy hour opportunity. I love the fast service with a small town vibe.
google avatar

Andrea R.

Yelp
This place is a gem in Eagle Rock. Great drinks. Go for happy hour! Simple & rustic bar inside & nice place to sit outside in the back.
google avatar

Kim S.

Yelp
Great neighborhood bar, awesome staff and good prices. Their happy hour has some great deals. They have a super cute patio with comfy sofas and lots of space. They've really done a great job on the outdoor area. On some weekends they'll have a pop up with a local restaurant but I haven't tried that yet. Otherwise, food is limited to chips. The Fable is the kind of spot that every neighborhood needs!
google avatar

Yelp
I got an apology from owner there was a misunderstanding about kareoki it's a beautiful bar. Bar tenders are friendly excellent customer service. Outside area is very cozy. Owner seemed sincere in his apology I highly recommend this bar with kareoki drinks are affordable very nice relaxing environment
google avatar

Sam M.

Yelp
This is such a hidden gem. Craft cocktails that are unique, well made, and fairly priced, with a really interesting ambiance. I don't want to call it a theme, because that would make it sound cheap, but it really isn't. It's just cool and has a real tavern type feel. One of my favorite spots in the neighborhood!
google avatar

Meg W.

Yelp
Great place to watch an LAFC game! Was excited to find out that a local bar is an official LAFC bar. I had been here years ago when it was called something else but I liked it more in its new incarnation. Good place to join some fans to watch a game!

Kathryn T.

Yelp
Pretty pricey for mediocre drinks, but the barkeeper was really nice. Lots of gen x-ers in the crowd. Very cool if you're in your 40's.

Tim C.

Yelp
Love this spot! Always great service and excellent karaoke / live band karaoke and great drink specials, and welcome staff!9
google avatar

Gabriel D.

Yelp
Small local dive bar with a cool and mellow vibe. They have kararoke and bartender was really nice. Nice set up especially the rear of the bar, an open space to sit and lounge on couches. Nice for summer evenings.
google avatar

Lauren T.

Yelp
Perfect spot for a few quiet beers on a Sunday afternoon. We've also frequented their free comedy night on Wednesday which is a nice mid-week activity! Staff are welcoming, good vibes all round.
google avatar

Neil G.

Yelp
The old boar has retired but the Chalet did not disappoint, it is pretty much the same setup with a few changes in the drink menu. I have always liked the place, it really has a rustic feel yet chill-almost comfy. A good neighborhood watering hole. They have quite a few craft beer options, my favorite is the Old Speckled Hen, after a few pints of this Ale - we sure had a good time at the dart board..whoops Anyway, I really like this place and my go to spot here in our hood, it's chill and they have good brews. Worth the try if you haven't.
google avatar

Franklin M.

Yelp
What a great dive bar to hang out with friends and enjoy a game on one of their big screen TVs. The place is dark and has a great atmosphere with micro-beers on tap what could be better and everything is reasonably priced.
google avatar

Katie T.

Yelp
Cool people behind the bar and in the booths, plus good happy hour! $6 wells and darts after work- I'm in. I think I saw some karaoke going on one night on my way to get some late night donuts across the street too. If you're wondering what the vibe is, there's a drink called Escape from York and I doubt anyone here went to block party or is going to that owner's new spot haha
google avatar

Marie L.

Yelp
GREAT BAR! Love the new vibe as The Fable. Drinks were awesome, atmosphere was great and THEY HAVE PLINY THE ELDER ON TAP!! Went on a very busy night, and even though it was packed, still got good service. Will be going back!
google avatar

Sherrie A.

Yelp
I recently discovered The Fable. It is definitely my new "go-to" hang -out place. The vibe is cool, big outdoor patio, the music is amazing, drinks are a good price and strong and the staff are delightful. Oh and they have darts!
google avatar

K... G.

Yelp
This is where I met my beau. We come here every once in a while to have a late mini date and enjoy their lighter beers or some Tito's & soda water or both. The ambience is chill. There's a dude resembling Thor who seems to be present in order to keep some order. He usually sits quietly in front of his laptop. The only deterrent lately has been this certain female bartender who has not been the friendliest of people. We want good service after a hard day at work, so Walt's has been kinder to us plus they have pinball machines! But overall, The Old Chalet has not disappointed.
google avatar

Joseph V.

Yelp
The Fable is the best place to hang out in Eagle Rock. The staff is amazing and the owner Tom and his wife work their butts off to make sure everyone that visits is enjoying themselves. It's family owned as well. It's kind of like "Cheers". The people that go there are also very friendly and chill. 5 stars, all the way!
google avatar

Lauren G.

Yelp
This is my go-to hang out spot. The staff is awesome and love their back patio. They have shuffle board and Foosball in the back. They also allow you bring outside food in if you get hungry. Karaoke during the week is also fun.
google avatar

Tyler T.

Yelp
This is my favorite bar. Full stop. The service, BGM, and drink selection are always top notch. Jessica in particular is thoughtful, attentive, and slings a mean Mezcal Mule! A consumate pro with a refined palette, her reccos are always on point. Get yer butt there for happy hour and you won't regret it.
google avatar

Art O.

Yelp
We came here after we had dinner at Little Beast. We were about to step in but apparently they were closing at 10:00pm - bummer! But one of the servers, Tanner, saw how bummed we were and he recommended a spot that was still open and had a big outdoor area. We were super thankful for his tip and we were able to continue the good times. Thanks a lot Tanner! We will return to have some drinks and hopefully our paths will cross.
google avatar

Rafa S.

Yelp
the fable is an eagle rock staple, we love this place. anyone that says different was dropped on their head as a baby. the dimly lit tavern feel pairs with classic movies and exceptional drink choice perfectly. indoor, outdoor, rowdy, peaceful. may the good lord bless you and your booze.
google avatar

Maya B.

Yelp
My family and I really enjoy going to Fable since it reopened under new ownership. Almost every Friday we order Casa Bianca pizza and bring it over to Fable for drinks and dinner. This place is wonderful, the owner Thom is so friendly and kind and we love their policy on no hate in their bar. This place has become a staple for our family and hopefully it will become one for yours too! Highly recommend!
google avatar

Blair E.

Yelp
My husband and I have been coming here since before the change in ownership and consider it our neighborhood watering hole. Jess is our favorite bartender and has taken care of us for years. She gets to know the customers and makes a great drink. Her customer service makes you feel at home. We also love that you can bring in food. Great to grab casa Bianca and head to the bar. A staple of Eagle Rock.
google avatar

Arielle E.

Yelp
Holy crap why did I not come here sooner?! First of all, I approve of the name change. We all need to spice it up now and then. ;) I came here for a friends "going away on tour for a couple months" gathering and of course with our luck, we roll up on a karaoke night!!! This made the whole night sooo much more fun. Also the 2 running karaoke were killin it! The bartender had a bit of sass but we didn't let it faze us. And the overall atmosphere was soo cozy ski chalet/throwback cabin in the woods. We all loved it. Will be back for sure!
google avatar

Samuel A.

Yelp
It's 12:40 A.M. on a Friday and the music selection is horrible. The atmosphere is dead/nonexistent and the bartenders are timid. Not a good place to be that's open till 2A.M.
google avatar

Dennis C.

Yelp
I came in here on a Thursday night wanting to try something new out as far as bars or hang out spots go and I was a little bit disappointed. I never argue the size of a bar but this place is rather small the outside area too I feel also didn't cut it. The crowd that was there was pretty tightly packed outside. Don't get me wrong I really like the setup inside. Bartenders were friendly and quick with our drink orders. Ill come back and try it again on a weekend.
google avatar

Maz G.

Yelp
The new DJ sucks. This is the worst shit ever! At least with the old CD jukebox you'd get random classic bangers. But now they've got some genX dork playing esoteric nonsense. I never thought it could get this bad. The music they play makes me want to rip my own head off, roll it into traffic like a bowling ball and run out after it in hopes that every car hits my headless body on the way. At this rate I'll risk getting hepC from the toilets at footsies rather than hear this noise.
google avatar

Bonnie D.

Yelp
This place is awesome! It has darts inside and fooseball outside on the patio. The ambiance is dark, but it's not a dirty-dive bar -- this place is squeaky clean! There's a great selection of liquor --from Pimms (mmmmm...Pimms cup) to Lost Spirits Whiskey. They also have a good happy hour -- 5pm-7pm every day (even Saturday and Sunday!) so that means $5 wine, $5 well drinks and $2 off draft beers. Great bar and a great time!

Cy K.

Yelp
Interesting vibe - definitely would not characterize this as a dive bar since you'll be putting out about 7-9 bucks a beer. Selection would get a 5, service was meh - the bartender spent too many minutes socializing with regulars and didn't notice multiple people waiting for their order. Will try it again and hope to re-review and try the dart boards.

Claudia M.

Yelp
Fair warning, this is going to be an eccentric review. But then, I'm an eccentric fellow. I love Old Chalet. I loved its predecessor, the Black Boar. (More lunatics hung out in the Black Boar days. Saner folks hang out now that it is the Old Chalet.) See, the the big (not the only, but a major factor) reason I love it is because I love to read books in bars. If a bar isn't comfortable for me or the ambiance isn't right, I can't read a book and I hate that. The Old Chalet is super cool, super chill and reading whatever book I'm into at the moment. There are also some really interesting people at the Old Chalet - fun conversations often ensue. And you can bring in food from wherever - big plus. Oh, and anyone reading this can safely ignore those reviews that are harsh and negative. Too many people are waaayyy too sensitive or picky about their bars. Or bartenders. Or the strength of a drink or how it took more than a minute to serve them and all that.
google avatar

Andy E.

Yelp
3 starts to the gentleman that helped us all night. Only docking 2 points because the gentleman that helped us the whole night was great and we overtipped (more than 20%) the whole night but the lady that served us once complained about our tip at the end of the night. She was very rude and made us reconsider coming back. I'll probably still come back cause the overall experience was good, but she had a very poor attitude especially for not being our main bartender.
google avatar

Cheryl U.

Yelp
great happy hour, I love how chill the bartenders and the vibe are- certainly worth a visit!
google avatar

Josh A.

Yelp
this bar rules and i know for a fact that they have never let a proud boy in their bar. i'm one of the guys from the griffin/proud boy situation, and one of the main reasons the proud boys went to the griffin in the first place is because THE OLD CHALET WILL NOT LET NAZIS HAVE COLD BEERS AND HOT TIMES. thom, the GM, is the sweetest, kindest man in the world. the bar staff is top notch, especially sam! best music choices of any bar in LA and super inclusive & welcoming of all!!! also to the guy lying about the whole thing: call me crazy, but if you're gonna wildly speculate that a guy is a nazi-lover, maybe he won't respond to you???? anyway, as a jew and a proud anti-fascist, the old chalet is your number one spot.
