Where to Eat in East Dulwich, London | Eater London

"Tucked away on a little row of shops straddling the East Dulwich/Peckham border, The Flying Pig pub has to fight a little harder for footfall than its Lordship Lane counterparts. It does so with a tempting menu of American Dude Food (the usual pulled pork burgers and jalapeno Mac ’n’ Cheese) and a revolving selection of ales from further afield. Its weekly Wings Nights are hot stuff; especially given five will set you back just £2.50." - Isaac Parham

The 13 Best Hostels in Europe (Updated 2025)

"Still one of my all-time favorite hostels, the Flying Pig has an atmosphere I love even if the facilities are standard and a bit pricey: the staff hang out with guests, know the city, and are always helpful; the beds and pillows are some of the comfiest I’ve ever slept on, the showers are good, and there are charging points by each bed. It’s popular with travelers who like to chill and smoke, but the bar area gets busy at night with people who don’t want to get high; there are three Amsterdam locations (uptown, downtown, and a new beach spot) and I prefer the smaller uptown location because it’s easier to meet people." - Matthew Kepnes

The location is great, staff friendly and price was a bit better than some other hostels of similar rating in the area. The rooms, upstairs common spaces and various appliances could use some TLC, and the bathroom could use more regular cleaning, but these things are somewhat expected in a hostel - and they were not terribly bad. Note: there are many stairs so could be something to consider if mobility is an issue for you.

Very comfy place. I booked a 3 bed room. No one ended up booking so I had the room to myself. The receptionist was very kind and helpful. The rooms were very clean as well as the restrooms/showers. The bar was very cozy and I felt very comfortable there. They have lockers, but you must bring your own padlock.

I had an amazing experience! The atmosphere is super chill and fun — perfect if you're traveling solo and want to meet people. The bar and common areas are lively, but there’s also space to relax if you need some quiet. Beds were comfy, the rooms were clean, and the shared bathrooms were surprisingly well maintained (which isn’t always the case in big hostels). The staff were really friendly and helpful, always ready with local tips or a good laugh. The location is another big plus: close to everything — walking distance to the city center, Central Station, museums, you name it. Also loved the international crowd it attracts. Such a great mix of people from all over the world. If you’re looking for a social, well-located hostel with a great personality in Amsterdam, this is it. I’d definitely come back.

If you stay here and smoke flower, please continue the communal art project I have aptly named the ‘Strain Stool’, in the basement smoking room. 🤘🏻 but honestly, this place is amazing. It’s clean, all the staff are friendly and helpful and the facilities are faultless. Unless you are claustrophobic 😅 but that’s just Dutch architecture. Peace & Love Flying Piggies, you rock, until next time. 💚

I really enjoyed my stay at The Flying Pig Hostel in Amsterdam! The reception staff were incredibly friendly and always happy to answer any questions — it made me feel very welcome from the start. The atmosphere in the hostel is warm and comfortable, and all the guests I met were kind and easy to get along with. That said, I’d like to mention a few small things that could be improved. On the lower bunk, there’s very little space — it’s not possible to sit up because the upper bed is too close, which can feel a bit cramped. Also, the reading light is quite bright and lights up the whole room, which might disturb other guests at night. It would be really helpful to have a small shelf or pocket near the lower bunk for storing small items, and maybe a curtain near the head area to block the light. The storage drawers under the bed are made of mesh, which is convenient, but small items can fall through or get stuck. The shower room also seems to lack ventilation — it can feel quite hot and stuffy after a shower. The bar area downstairs is a fun place to hang out, but the space is quite limited. Interestingly, the smoking room (which I didn’t use) looks more spacious — it has a pool table and a large window facing the garden, which makes it feel more open and relaxed. Also worth mentioning: there are quite a few narrow and steep staircases throughout the building — but then again, that’s just part of Amsterdam’s charm! 😉 Overall, despite a few small inconveniences, I had a wonderful stay. The location is perfect, the vibe is great, and I always felt safe and welcome. I would happily come back — thank you for a great experience!

Where do I start, from the staff to the building to the other hostel goers. It was a truly magical stay. We arrived just in time for the England euros and were grateful for their team of staff to put it on for us. Showers are clean. Toilets are toilets. What a stay definitely will be back !

I love the vibe in this hostel. The staff is really friendly and the beds are comfy. I had the best time at the bar in the evening and karaoke was so much fun! Special thanks to Oscar for being such a fun bartender. Will come back on my next trip for sure!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Had a great stay at Saint Christopher's inn! Excellent customer service and great prices. The dining room was lots of fun, and the friendly atmosphere made the whole hostel feel welcoming. Yuri was especially helpful and provided all the information I needed

Yelp
If you're a young traveler looking for a cozy, happy place to stay in Amsterdam, this is the place for you! The staff is amazing, fun and accommodating. The bar downstairs is a lively place to meet other travelers with a designated smoke area with a pool table. I haven't stayed in many mixed dorms, but this one felt clean and safe and easy (especially as a woman) and when there was one person who made others uneasy, the staff helped to move the person. The location is perfect for any type of Amsterdam visitor, located near bars, shops, museums, and easily accessible to the tram that takes you all over the city! The few negatives are the bathrooms are all single use and very tiny. The shower rooms have little space to put clothes while showering so they don't get wet. The stairs are steep and slightly dangerous (but I never fell down them so maybe not as scary as they look). Finally, the kitchen is only available 13:00-22:30 which is not ideal for a traveler on a budget! Overall, I had an amazing time and would come back again!!

Yelp
The Flying Pig Uptown was... an experience. It was loud, and crowded, and crazy, but I can't complain about any of that, because it is kind of what I expected. This location is down a relatively quiet street near Vondelpark, and even though it isn't the downtown location, it was still not only super easy to find and get to, but also within walking distance of everything downtown. My traveling companion and I opted for a private room, which cost more, but was still cheaper than hotels in the area. This was also nice because we had a place to store our belongings without fear of them being taken. The room itself was painted a macaroni and cheese colored orange, but it wasn't so bad. The beds were comfortable enough and even though there was only one blanket each, it was clean. The problem for me was the bathroom. It was kind of mildew-y, not particularly clean. Not dirty, but having a shower that isn't sectioned off from the rest of the bathroom made so that everything in there got wet. Which was annoying at best. Unfortunately, we stayed here after arriving in Europe - no sleep on the flight or the day we arrived, so by the time we went to bed at just before 7 or 8 p.m., both of us had been awake for more than 30 hours. As soon as I fell asleep, I was OUT. But my friend sleeps lighter than I do, and apparently, she was up part of the night because everyone was so loud. We checked out the next morning, as we were heading for Belgium, and now in retrospect, I think that a place like the Flying Pig is better for people wanting to stay more than one night. That way, they can really settle in, familiarize themselves with their surroundings, and get to know the other people staying there, which is what I think is one of the more fun aspects of staying in a hostel. Since we missed out on the community portion of things, I would venture to say we missed out on a lot, and that's why we didn't enjoy our stay as much. Or... maybe we're just getting too old. Either way, not a bad place, but know what you're getting into. As for me, I'll likely opt for a hotel of sorts next time in town.

Yelp
My expectations for this place were way too high. I somewhat imagined that it would be cool to stay at a hostel but it was so bad I checked out a day early without any refund. My decision to get a hostel was because I went to Amsterdam to surprise my friends. I liked the idea of staying closer to the museums and Vondelpark. The location was perfect for me. I guess I didn't like being woken up several times of the night, It was just not my cup of tea. Maybe at my old age I'm just not into walking up and seeing extra people in the room. It was interesting getting ready in the morning because the ones who came in late at night making noise expected you be be quiet in the morning. *Exhale* Lesson learned. I spent my last night in Amsterdam at my friends Air BnB because I was just over Flying Pig.

Yelp
This is a true hostel where it's impossible to not to get to know other travelers around you. Breakfast is available, which attracts a lot of customers. It's a younger crowd with ages ranging in late teens to mid-twenties. Computers are available for use. And if you're a sociable person, this is the perfect place to be. The street isn't lit very well at night but felt safe enough.

Yelp
Let me first start by saying that all the staff is extremely nice and welcoming. They really have great customer service in that aspect. My bf and I got a private room and while it was much smaller than we expected, it was efficient enough. Two reasons I gave them 4 stars instead of 5: they need to update the facility a bit, and also need to be more respectful of peoples privacy...especially when cleaning a private room. Their cleaning people would either just barge in our room without knocking or knock but then just come In right after without us saying it was okay to come in. One of us could've been changing etc. Other than that though, it had a great location, we met a lot of cool people, and the staff was super nice. I would definitely come back!

Yelp
The flying pig is probably the best hostel in Amsterdam. I actually stayed here for a business trip, and the one slight down side is we found the Dutch definition of "twin" room is much closer to the English one of "Double". Expect to share a bed. With your friends. Still, this is Amsterdam after all, so no worries. The hostel is perfectly situated being right next to both the Vondelpark and Leidsplein, where you can find decent clubs (Paradiso), coffee shops (Rokerij) and museums (the van Gogh museum, the Stedelijk museum and the Rembrandt museum are just around the corner). Check my other reviews! It's not super-cheap, but it is super-friendly, great fun staff, a bar that gets some traction, guitar, beanbags, and a lot of very very chilled out folk. Recommended.

Yelp
Staff is very nice Rooms and room mates in my dorm are great Close to everything Amsterdam city is walkable or if you rent a bike for €6-8 is doable Bed sheets are provided and clean 5 floors Bathroom like the toilet is REALLY tiny compared to American bathrooms, clean. Showers are separate but clean Downstairs is like a party every night especially the bar / kitchen area They have a kitchen You can store your stuff in private lockers Overall great experience except for the damn stairs lol!!!

Yelp
I happened to stay here with my friend at the beginning of my trip and at the end. After coming back the 2nd time and seeing what many different hostels had to offer, I was sad to be coming back to the Flying Pig. The one thing I did not like the most was the bathrooms. The smell and cleanliness was very distracting. And when using the showers, there was always something that would go wrong. Mishaps that happened to my friend and I included: the lights and water shutting off randomly mid-shower, water suddenly switching to freezing cold, or the shower head falling down and attacking my poor foot. Another thing to be warned about before staying here is there are a lot of narrow stairs to go through! This can be very trying if you find out that you are staying on "3" floor (which is actually the fourth floor) and carrying a 30lb suitcase. Also, there is a random cat that wanders around the hostel? Very odd.. One thing I did enjoy was the fun nature of the hostel. Everyone is young and looking to have a good time. I think I met some of my favorite people in Europe here. The bar downstairs where you check in is very lively at night and for those who want to smoke they have a designated smoke room. One perk of being so far up in the hostel, was the noise from downstairs did not reach our level. The location is very ideal. Not even a 5 minutes walk and you are at the famous "i am amsterdam" sign, Vondelpark, or the Van Gogh Museum. There are also many buses and trams just around the corner of the hostel that can take you to Centraal Station or Schipol Airport.

Yelp
Great place to stay, friendly staff, good accommodations! Hope your glutes are in good working order if you end up staying higher than the 2nd floor.. But all in all we are so grateful we picked this place. Great part of town and close to everything you could want! Thanks again for the hospitality, we will be back.

Yelp
I stayed here with my friends last October when we visited Amsterdam, and we all agreed that we had a pleasant stay in the 10 bed mixed dorm. People in our room were generally pleasant and interesting to talk to, the beds were comfortable and it was nice to have actual duvets. The bathrooms were clean and I never had to wait for a shower. While it can be a struggle getting your luggage up the super steep and narrow stairs, just ask someone for help and I'm sure they'd be more than willing to lend a hand. The locker system for bags on the day you check out - very helpful and easy to use. Also - little packs of Nutella at breakfast! What else can you ask for from a hostel?

Yelp
The Flying Pig Uptown was a nice place to stay for a girl traveling solo in Amsterdam. It is clean, the staff are friendly, and it feels like a safe neighborhood. There is a cute little bar in the lobby area where you can meet your fellow travelers :) It is located next to a beautiful park. It is a littttle bit of a walk from the downtown central part of Amsterdam, so if you are wanting to be in the midst of the party scene it is not the prime place. But sweet staff members and they make foreigners feel comfortable.

Yelp
This place is amazing - the rooms are clean, and the staff is extremely friendly and helpful. My friend and I ate some bad Indian food a few blocks away, and threw up in our room from food poisoning. The staff cleaned it up immediately in a very kind and professional manner, and got us OJ and bread to help us feel better. I'd stay here again in a heartbeat (but avoid the Indian food down the block!!).

Yelp
This was my first trip out of the states and I was traveling alone. The staff made me feel as if I was on a trip with a group of friends and the bar and smoke room are perfect for hanging out after a long day walking around Amsterdam. I made acquaintances with Ross and Alex, so it was nice to have people to recognize and chat with when I was relaxing at the hostel. The reception is staff, particularly Terry, are extremely helpful. Any time I went to the desk for advice or recommendations, I received much more info than I expected and the recommendations were always exactly what I was looking for. The hostel overlooks Vondelpark, its a wonderful place to start your day with a morning walk through the park. Though the hostel sits right outside the canals, it's within a 20-25 minute walk to most places in the city. I was a little nervous being in Europe for the first time by myself but this hostel made the experience everything I had hoped it to be. I stayed for 6 nights--by night 6 this place felt like home.

Yelp
I had such a great experience at the Flying Pig Uptown last week. I stayed for two nights, but I met a couple of friends who stayed for four and loved it. Everyone in my hostel room (8 bed mixed dorm) that we didn't previously know were wonderful, and I feel as though I made friends that I will keep in contact with for a long time. The staff were incredibly nice and helpful. The hostel itself is small, and they provide you with free breakfast. The bar area is small but fun, and there is a separate smoking room if you are interested in that kind of thing. The only down side of the hostel is that there are no elevators and the staircases are TINY, so make sure your suitcase is not too heavy! Location is prime; only a couple of minutes from the Amsterdam sign, close to the bus stop, the canals, and the Red Light District. 10/10 would recommend to a friend, and would stay here next time I come to Amsterdam! I love this city so I will definitely be back.
