The Gaslight - Review - Downtown Nantucket - Nantucket - The Infatuation

"Focus on the inventive small plates at this Asian spot that doubles as a concert venue most summer nights. The blue crab rangoons are the freshest we’ve ever tasted, the peppery baby back riblets are sticky and spicy, and the tuna tartare larb stands out thanks to the addition of fresh papaya salad mixed in. For entrees, the black cod bento box (with perfectly fried tempura veg, and a tofu and tomato salad) is the best choice on the menu, and the smashburger with black garlic truffle cheese, pickles, and special sauce is reliably tasty. After dinner, splurge on a bottle of champagne from the Moet vending machine and settle in for some karaoke or a show—prior headliners include Lola Kirke, Mickey Avalon, and more. RESERVE A TABLE WITH RESERVE A TABLE" - Brennan Carley

My husband said he would give this restaurant a 10 if he could. Located in center of town. Our server Carla was so sweet. Very attentive. It began to drizzle and the staff immediately came out to ask us to move inside if we wished. It passed quickly and enjoyed the peaceful outside area. Food was amazing. Asian influence. After dinner we moved our way inside and sat at the bar until the band started at 10:30. So glad we did!!! Amazing vibes , great bar staff and service!! Enjoy!

I love the overall atmosphere. Delightful food and drinks. I wish service was the same. I will still go back for their good food. Cheers!

I was only there for a minute, but everybody was helpful friendly. Great bartenders, although sadly, no Montucky Cold Snacks there weren't a lot of people in there at the time, so it was pretty chill but I could definitely see it getting hectic with a larger later crowd.

Buckeye Blitz

Google
Service could be better, chicken was cold and raw, they corrected it fast with a replacement meal and deducted the original item. Reservations needed in late december.

A small Asian-fusion restaurant we tried on the island. Overall it was pretty good, and the steak 🥩 tips were delicious 😋.

Great spot for small venue concert! I saw Arcy Drive here and will be back next summer to see them here again!

The Gaslight restaurant on Nantucket is a new permutation of an old restaurant on Nantucket. This was most recently The Starlight, a restaurant with bar AND movie theater. The Starlight had been in place for more than 15 years before it closed within the past few years. It was a popular hangout as a bar. It hosted BINGO for several years. It was a restaurant. More importantly, it was one of two movie theaters on the island and for several years, the ONLY movie theater. I had frequented the theater on Saturdays with my own children. Now as The Gaslight, which is what it had been called when I first went to Nantucket in 1990, has been totally re-done. The movie theater is gone (so sad). The bar is now the centerpiece of the place and is centrally located. There is a large dining room and a smaller dining area. There is a stage in the large dining room for live music. There is also outdoor seating. I was there for late brunch on Sunday, May 15 2022. My daughter and I split a PB&J scone (needed more strawberry jam for me). I had the Smash Patty Melt. Very, very good with plenty of caramelized and garlic. My daughter had Bagel Sammies with smoked salmon. She said that she enjoyed it. We chose outdoor seating as it was a very nice day out. The waitress was very attentive, keeping water glasses filled and making sure we did not need/want anything else. The location is one of the best in-town in my opinion, NOT on Main Street. Expect Nantucket prices but otherwise, The Gaslight is well worth it and I would eat there again. In fact, I recommend it.

Food was alright, wouldn’t recommend it for that. But the drinks and venue area are worth it for the right band.

Yelp
Good drinks, live music and night life. Did not try any food but the bartenders were awesome, and the margs were on point! They have a patio to hang on in the summer all night long. Turns 21+ around 10pm.

Yelp
Gaslighttttttttt! One of the funnest restaurants in nantucket! For lunch/dinner they have an Asian menu. Noodles are amazing and their egg rice is the best to share. Best way to enjoy the menu is to get a whole bunch of plates and share with the table. After you're done having dinner the place turns into a bar. Karaoke Nights and live music all through out the week. Very fun restaurant

Leticia P.

Yelp
AVOID!! Overpriced, cheap tasting drinks that leave you sick to your stomach, and the servers were wretched. Not only did the bartender "accidentally " spill my drink onto my Veronica Beard jeans, they then proceeded to accuse me of being too drunk and kicking me out when it was my first ($30) drink. If I had the mental energy to give this hellhole I'd sue for new jeans and emotional distress.

Yelp
Went to karaoke 2x and figured out it's only locals allowed to sing. Pretty disappointing but whatever. They can do whatever they want but don't waste your time if you want to be part of the fun. Go to Crown and Rose for better karaoke.

Yelp
We came for the music but stayed for the food after discovering that the music didn't even begin until after 10:30pm. Nonetheless, we had a great time and really enjoyed the inventive tapas menu. Favorites included the Japanese BBQ Ribs and Cheeseburger Bao Bun, but really everything was excellent. It ended up being one of our favorites on the island.

Yelp
Best Miso Cod I've ever had!! Super fun environment and fantastic food! A must try! Late night music made this a perfect one stop shop!

Yelp
Ok first of all was so excited to try this place since last year and im glad be able to this year. Like literally were about to try everything in the menu. Lol. Pretty descent portion can be to share and cocktail is pretty good too. Must try .

Courtney A.

Yelp
Most amazing food, staff, and ambience. Love the music they choose and I love how much the owners invest into the community.

Joanne D.

Yelp
We have never been so rushed in a restaurant and the food was just ok. It was way too expensive. The value was not good at all.

Allison L.

Yelp
Horrible service. Rude and slow. Bouncer and bartenders are creepy towards women. Would not recommend to a friend visiting Nantucket.

Yelp
this was a new spot for myself and my husband when we were on Nantucket back in December. Because of covid times it wasn't as POPPIN as I can imagine it would be normally... I will say though that of all the places we ate, this was the most crowded/least spaced out. Nevertheless, we had a good time and enjoyed some good food and drink... My cocktails were pretty strong which I liked... or I may have just been tipsy from our afternoon at Cisco. whoops. Tried the Thugs Passion- sparkling cocktails are right up my alley. We tried several appetizers and I don't remember all of them but I will say I piled shishito peppers in my mouth like I'd never eaten before. The hamachi sashimi was excellent and the various yakitoris were also delish! For my entree I had the udon carbonara which was just..... divine. It was super decadent but a really great meal for a cold winter night so it hit the spot. The only thing I don't love about this place is the menu is a little bit on the small side (may be a covid thing) so the only choices for entrees are between one of the small plates, noodles, and rice. If you don't want carbs your options are limited, especially since the yakitori is a little pricey for what you get.

Yelp
Quite a change from the old Starlight. Creative, well executed small plates and main dishes. Beef tartare was excellent, and the Tuna Sashimi Bowl hit the spot as well. Service was solid and prompt; the overall "price/value" relationship is arguably the only fly in the ointment...fine dining pricing in a "bar style" atmosphere, even by Nantucket standards. Will come again, though.

Yelp
I came for dinner here and it was excellent. Our server was fantastic, we sat on the patio and really enjoyed everything we got. I brought my service dog with me and he just calmly lays at my feet when I sit anywhere. I decided to go back tonight for Karaoke night and thought I needed some night life in me. When I got to the front door, I said I have service dog and the gentlemen said he had to ask. I thought that was weird but hey go ahead, please ask. I love an opportunity for someone to learn something. The manager came over and said he really couldn't seat me anywhere because of my service dog. His reasoning was that it gets really packed in there there's not a good place to put us. I explained to him that's fine, but my service dog should be able to go anywhere that I go. He's a 40 lb Aussie that is very used to be in busy environments with me. He's come to concerts, busy restaurants, bars etc. He basically said "sorry, I can't do anything about it" I really didn't feel like making a scene or educating him at the time so decided to walk away and go home. It ruined our night and we'll never go back. Really sad that this type of discrimination is at the restaurant through management. There are plenty of other awesome restaurants in Nantucket with similar vibes. Our best meal was at Nautilus and had a similar menu with small plates/tapas that are worth trying. Save yourself the tapas meal for that restaurant, it will knock your socks off.

Tad O.

Yelp
Not sure I get the point of this place. Cool looking dining room but so loud don't bother trying to hear yourself speak. We tried a few dishes - the octopus was rubbery, the pea shoots were swimming in sauce and the fried chicken had more grease then meat. With so many good places to go on island, I wouldn't bother spending money here.
google avatar

Tracy T.

Yelp
Outstanding menu! Perfect blend of delicious classics and artfully crafted Asian staples. The menu has variety; we had a burger and tuna nachos in the same meal. We also thoroughly enjoyed the spicy cucumbers and the chicken meatball yakatori. We saw the duck breast yakatori come out to the table next to us and it looked fantastic. There were other yakatori options on the menu that we wanted but were sold out at the time. It is somewhat dimly lit, great ambiance, but not great for photos. Trust this and other raving reviews that Gaslight is a solid option for any time of day on island.

Yelp
Complete respect for high quality ingredients. This place is far better than indicated, slashed by petty reviewers with issues. The food and service were excellent. We had the Japanese short ribs, filet medallions, hamachi ceviche, cheeseburger bao bun, and pork dumplings. Between our bar service and being seated we waited for a few moments at the post station and could observe a chef painstakingly slicing fanning and carefully adorning some raw fish appetizers. It was culinary artwork, not a hack job. The tenderloin pieces were nicely medium rare, the bao bun was quite unique with a foie gras dip, decadent, mushroomy but still reminded you of a cheeseburger. The dumplings were meaty and succulent with a nod towards good soup dumplings. The pork was tasty, not gamey. The skins were delicate, not gummy. The gentleman busting tables recommended either the short rib dishes and he was spot on. Our ribs were to die for! It was succulent meat candy without being overly sweet, falling off the bone. The ceviche was fresh and cured in watermelon juice that complemented the fish, rather than overpowering it. (Ie acidic citrus typical of ceviche.) Wait and busing service were both frequent and friendly despite this place being busy. Noise level was lively but tolerable. We came for entertainment but unfortunately too early but we're so happy we stayed for the food. We have talked about our dining experience here many times since leaving. To me, that's a mark of why a place gets five stars. I wish I had some photographs to share. I would come back here in a heartbeat.

Yelp
We popped in just after opening Sunday evening for dinner. We were quickly seated by a great hostess and had a lovely server. We opted to split 4 small plates for the two of us, though we really could have done 3 (cheeseburger bao bun not picture...and our least favorite). It's island prices, but worth it for the quality of food. Cocktails were great - all made with freshly squeezed juices. Highly recommend!

Yelp
unbelievable crap food for $38. Taiwanese fried rice is a joke. 6 skrim, yes they're the size of a quarter. yellow rice, some lemon and something seasoning, in a box. no spork or anything. $38... I'm telling you it's a cup of dry rice, two cups of water, some lemon and chopped spinach.. if you're lucky.. I saw a tab with $7 pickles... gaslight is right.

Scott L.

Yelp
If anyone has been to Nautalis, you should go to Gaslight. I believe they have the same owner and/or chef. We visited Gaslight twice with different people in our two weeks on Nantucket. Everything we had was terrific. The flavors and spices are very complimentary and delicious. Our friends found some of the dishes were a little spicy but the menu and waitstaff are helpful explaining which ones to watch out for. We loved our server, Sara. She was attentive and always as helpful in explaining meals with potential allergy concerns. Some of favorites dishes were: Garlic Saikoro steak, japanese noodle bowl, heritage pork dumplings and the fried baby potatoes.

Susan A.

Yelp
Island was busy so didn't have many choices so ended up here. Cheeseburger was about 2" wide served with nothing but sauce. It should move to the appetizer section on the menu so people are aware it is bite size, smaller than a slider. I was embarrassed for the restaurant.

Yelp
Was here for dinner a year ago and the food was delicious. Since then they have a new chef (I was told when I commented on how much worse the food had become). I'm not sure yet whether I'm more disappointed by the awful food or the awful, overpriced food this time. Although it's difficult to feel good paying 42 dollars for a slimy chunk of miso-glazed cod on a bed of a generically dressed grain bowl, it's really the food itself that was disappointing. The veal Katsu was an over-fried, burnt slab of tough meat, accompanied by a slaw smothered in something green. The Taiwanese fried rice bore a strong resemblance to boiling rather than frying and the gratuitous microgreens couldn't make up the lack of seasoning. What was worse? The fishily-aromatic SINGLE bao burger (ONE bun??? For 16 dollars??) or the raw, fatty "ribeye" noodle/ramen. A close call but, since it was over 30 dollars, and genuinely inedible, the ribeye noodle dish wins. The fault is with the food; cocktails were fine; service was very good. But it's not worth the calories, let alone the cash. (Pictured: remains of veal katsu)

Yelp
Awful food and uninviting - good luck this place stinks. Managerial staff is laughable.

Yelp
It was really nice having brunch on the patio this morning. The food was very interesting and delicious. The only drawback was that couldn't provide a cup of coffee, but other than that, it was perfect.

Emilie C.

Yelp
it looked fun, however I never got in to experience it. 2 hour wait. gave up. all I have to say is don't wait more than 30 min in that bullshit line
google avatar

Stacey C.

Yelp
Great bar and great music venues. Nice bartenders. Food was a 3/5.....the avocado roll was fantastic...but the chicken skewers were lame and the octopus la plancha was so tough. Very pricey for small plates. I would just go for cocktails and great live music 7 days a week.

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place. For many reasons. They have a great website that draws you in, making the establishment look for more attractive then it actually is. Their menu looks very appealing. But they unfortunately fall very short when it comes to delivery. Our food was so incredibly over salted, it was bizarre. I can't imagine that the cook, had he tasted the food, would have been ok with it. It was so badly over salted that it led me to think that maybe the chef was doing it on purpose .... I mean how could anyone put that much salt in food and not know what they are doing? Take this from someone who loves salty food ... honestly I sometimes over salt my food ... I love salt and never complain about it. This food was way beyond any salty food I had ever eaten. Borderline dangerous for anyone who has high BP. I really hope they hire a new chef and turn it around.

Mike G.

Yelp
I had a poor experience. I went to close out my tab and the arrogant bartender misplaced my cc. He said they gave me back my cc and I lost it. Then as I'm leaving he handed it back to me and tried to apologize but said "I'm passive aggressive and that makes me stupid." Well clearly this guy doesn't speak well for the gaslight and I have a business trip every September with 128 clients visiting island. His name was Steven and he had an Irish accent. He would make for a lousy therapist. Never again.

Johan E.

Yelp
Come here for the music and the drinks. Not for the food. Very little on the menu impresses me. And whenever I do get the food, I always wish I had gone somewhere else. At night, this place becomes PARTY CENTRAL with loud live music and drunken debauchery. It's probably safe to say that's when they make most of their money.
google avatar

John P.

Yelp
We showed up at 8:20 and waited until 10:40. They misled the entire line to believe they were going to let in people but never did
google avatar

Marie A.

Yelp
Great new spot in town. The bar scene is lively and there's music every night. The why wouldn't you is my fav simple drink of the summer made with vodka and watermelon. On the food side the hamachi and the poke nachos are a must. This is a graduated version of chicken box with stellar food (no surprise there since the folks at nautilus have ties to this place) Will definitely check this spot out whenever I'm in ACK based on my last two visits

Jeanette M.

Yelp
Amazing food, amazing service, amazing crowd. wish I came on a band night. Hot guys were everywhere best experience I had during my short stay on the island.

Gabriella B.

Yelp
4 stars. Had the black cod dish, yellow tail hand rolls, BBQ ribs, peach and watermelon mixed drinks. Each was absolutely DECADENT and interesting. Ended up coming here bc nautilus was booked and I'm so glad we did. They're right around the corner from one another and are affiliated. I also prefer the interior of this restaurant to nautilus bc it's more open and light. Only comments are the hand roll should really be served in sets of 4 not 2 and yes the portions are tiny and yes I did have a frozen pizza upon arriving home but the dishes were soooo delicious I'm choosing to overlook. Also the service was top notch.
google avatar

Tervuren Q.

Yelp
Just got awesome takeout tonight, pretty much ordered the whole menu for family of 4, we had plenty left over. Ribs are top notch, the noodles w meat was fantastic. We also the the sake/beer togo, that was fun too

Kim P.

Yelp
If you are going here late night, make sure your bartender isn't the one with dreadlocks. Our drink was spilled on the bar as soon as he served it. Although the bartender saw this happen, he would not replace the drink because "he would have had to pay for it." I found this extremely rude and will not be returning. In addition, I would never recommended. Live music is mediocre and not worth the cover. The security guards will try to tell you that you need to pay cash af the bar because the CC machine is broken, this is not true. Good luck!

Halsey M.

Yelp
$43 for a bowl of rice with a piece of salmon no bigger than a piece of fun size Halloween candy. Most ridiculous rip-off.
google avatar

Ariel C.

Yelp
I love this place! It's got a really cool indoor/outdoor vibe at the bar, and great live music. My favorite part has to be the food, though. Every single thing I've tried there has been phenomenal and the bagel brunch is SO good. This is the first place I make a reservation any time I'm on island.
google avatar

Rashi M.

Yelp
This restaurant has it all. Great patio, fun dishes, great cocktails, and really tasty food. Disappointed that there were no rice or noodle dishes that were vegetarian, but I was still so satisfied with the other plates we got. It was an umami-filled treat and nice to take a break from the American food at several other restaurants in the area.

Hari W.

Yelp
Expensive mediocre food. The Avocado hand roll was served without soy sauce nor wasabi. These items - when requested - were served in tiny stingy portions. The rest of our meal was barely passable.

Cathy H.

Yelp
My first visit to the Gaslight was fantastic. The atmosphere of the outside dining area is inviting and relaxing. The food was delicious and served in a timely matter. The second visit was not a good experience at all. We were there for an hour and a half and our server never asked us if we wanted more drinks. It took 90 minutes before our order of pan fried noodles came out and at that point we packed them up and took them home. Not once did our server stop by our table to give us updates or apologize for our ridiculously long wait. I will try this restraunt one more time, maybe the third time will be the charm!
google avatar

Chris V.

Yelp
We are big fans of The Nautilus, which has common ownership with The Gaslight, and had a terrific dinner. The spicy tuna hand roll and cheeseburger boa buns were standouts.

Colin S.

Yelp
The name gaslight is fitting because all of the positive reviews are obviously gaslighting by saying this place is good when it is really really bad. I went here in 2019 with a group while we were visiting the island. We went for dinner and the food came out cold. When I asked the waiter if they could heat up my meal I was told "those are Asian noodles they are supposed to be cold" (they were not... also they were udon noodles why refers to them as just Asian?). We were told that it is really more of a bar/music venue so we went the next night. The DJ was brutal and was aggressively hitting on the girls in our group when we wasn't butchering a set list. He kept asking if we could come hang out after and tell us about all of the spots the locals go to. Also for the love of god please start checking ID's.

Car N.

Yelp
Went here during a visit to the island for our honeymoon. My wife ordered the Japanese noodle bowl. It was tasty but could have used more broth. Unfortunately I ordered the Taiwanese fried rice with wild shrimp. At $28 for a tiny plate of fried rice and 3 medium sized grilled shrimp, this was a ripoff! Don't order this if your a guy. You will leave hungry. The edamame was nice. Just overpriced and not worth the cost.

E. A.

Yelp
Thoroughly enjoyed our Sunday night dinner here. Crowded but not insane, and our food was delicious. My friend got the scallop roll and loved it. I got the chicken negi, and we split the fantastic and mouth-watering Taiwanese fried rice with pork. I'd never been to Nantucket and this was a great find.

John S.

Yelp
Came here on my first visit to Nantucket. Highly recommend if you are looking for something different. The menu is Asian fusion and all of the dishes we had were fantastic. Try the poke nachos. They were first rate.

Erika L.

Yelp
My 3rd visit to The Gaslight was very disappointing. I ordered the Cantonese Pan Fried Noodles that I had gotten only a week prior. But this time the dish was dry and completely lacked flavor. It was nothing like it had been previously. I wondered if maybe a sauce etc. was left out so I decided I would mention it to the waitress and I did so very apologetically. The waitress offered to have it remade. I agreed. A couple minutes later a woman (hostess/possibly manager) came to the table to tell me that the chef had tried it, it always tastes like that, mentioned that maybe I'm not familiar with pan fried dishes, and said that if they remade the dish it would taste exactly the same. She then asked if I wanted another one, or something else. I asked if I could get the other noodle dish (hand pulled with lamb). That dish was good and after a few bites I shared it with the rest of my group. My disappointed feelings were intensified when the bill came and I saw that I was charged for the 2nd, more expensive, noodle dish. I only ordered it because the first one was tasteless and I was told it would be made exactly the same... Lesson learned. Poor customer service ruined the experience.
