The 13 Best Ethiopian Restaurants In London - London - The Infatuation

"Anyone who’s frequented this BYOB Tottenham spot knows these three things to be true: tender lega tibes is the best possible way to consume ginger, marriage oaths can be abandoned for the last stew-soaked piece of injera, and berbere spices taste even better with a Mulatu Astatke soundtrack. It’s a casual, cash-only restaurant filled with woven mesob baskets and locals that already know their order. Borrow ours until you find your own—the lentil, garlic, and tang-heavy misir wot platter." - jake missing, sinead cranna, rianne shlebak, heidi lauth beasley

The 13 Best Restaurants In Tottenham - London - The Infatuation

"The first thing to know about The Genet Cafe is that it’s cash-only—shoutout to the cash point at the Post Office on Broad Lane that doesn’t charge. The second thing to know about this laid-back BYOB Ethiopian restaurant is that the must-order misir wot is £12. This is satisfying self-care by way of lentils, berbere spice, and a heavy dose of garlic, all hypnotically shovelled from platter to palm to mouth with sublimely tangy rolls of injera. Locals and long-term couples wander into the warm dining room to chat over tender, ginger-fest lega tibes and to inevitably squabble over the last of the stew-soaked injera at the bottom of the platter." - heidi lauth beasley

The Genet Cafe - Review - Tottenham - London - The Infatuation

The second thing you should know about this laid-back Ethiopian restaurant is that the must-order misir wot is £12. This is satisfying self-care by way of lentils, berbere spice, and a heavy dose of garlic, all hypnotically shovelled from platter to palm to mouth with sublimely tangy rolls of injera. Locals and long-term couples wander into the warm dining room—dotted with woven mesob baskets and clay jebenas—to chat over tender, ginger-fest lega tibes and inevitably squabble over who gets to eat the majority share of the stew-soaked injera at the bottom of the platter. Also, it’s BYOB so pick up a bev on the way if you want something to drink alongside the upbeat soundtrack of Mulatu Astatke songs." - Heidi Lauth Beasley

Best-Value Restaurants North London Are Cheap, but Not ‘Cheap Eats’ | Eater London

"No cuisine, except for perhaps Turkish and Indian, has such depth in London as Ethiopian does, especially in north London. Take The Genet Cafe, a small restaurant located below a council estate in Seven Sisters, that is run with skill and warmth by the owner who cooks everything herself, from the rainbow array of vegetable curries, so full of flavour that its sometimes possible to have a completely vegan meal without realising it, to the rich, buttery dulet, bouncing with tripe and the crunch of orange chillis. Come on an evening and she’ll be busy at the back, but during the day diners are treated with the dictionary definition of above and beyond hospitality." - Jonathan Nunn

Incredible food and service. I’ve had Ethiopian food several times and this was the best Ethiopian food I’ve ever had. We got the 3-person Yetsom beyayenetu (vegan plate with assortment of dishes, everything was good but beets were phenomenal), the Sineg karia (spicy stuffed peppers- so fresh and delicious. Enhanced the meal. If you can handle spice, this is a must), the dulet (lamb intestine- don’t be shy, it tastes very good and like lamb from any other part of body), and Ayib begomen (cottage cheese, spinach, spiced butter- soooo good). The food was well cooked and seasoned deliciously. Literally everything was so good. The owner also took the time to teach us how to eat it and tell us about her culture. The restaurant decor is also aesthetic, warm, and homey with plenty of seating. Music is quiet and pleasant so great place to have a meal with conversation. A must come and try!!!!

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Genet Cafe, and it was a delightful experience from start to finish. The food was absolutely delicious, with rich, authentic flavors that truly showcased the best of Ethiopian cuisine. We ordered a variety of vegetarian dishes along with shiro, and everything was beautifully prepared, filling, and satisfying. What truly set this place apart was the exceptional service. The staff, a group of lovely and welcoming ladies, went above and beyond to make us feel at home. Their warm hospitality added to the overall charm of the meal. To top it all off, the prices were reasonable, making this restaurant a fantastic choice for anyone looking to enjoy high-quality Ethiopian food without breaking the bank. I highly recommend this restaurant and will definitely be returning soon! 10/10 🤩

It's a lovely, comfy place to try Ethiopian food. We were completely new to Ethiopian food and the owner recommended dishes to us based on our preferences. This place is definitely vegan-friendly and also suitable for people who like gluten-free food. It's also got a great selection of meat options. Things to note before you head over: 1. If you're new to Ethiopian food (like us), you may find injera (the bread you use to eat your dishes with) too sour for your liking. It is healthy, but if the sourness isn't for you, get strong-tasting dishes that can mask the sourness. We got a spicy mutton dish that worked well for this. 2. They don't do small individual plates - my picture below is the 3 dishes we ordered put on one platter. It makes for a nice communal dining experience. I really enjoyed the mutton dishes. All in all, I definitely enjoyed it - it was new to me and I came away with a greater appreciation for Ethiopian food.

This is one of the most delicious Ethiopian food I had around London. Everything I selected was so well done and tasty! Only think I’d say is it would be good if they add option to order more Enjera for online orders Yum yum thank you mum! (Edited on 14/Nov/2024 for second order and additional review below…) Consistent and delicious! You can never go wrong with quanta firfir and awaze tibs! Also had doro, equally yummy. Words can't describe how deliciously lip smacking this food is. And don't even get me started on the service, how yummy the food is and how quick it was served. Genet deserves a certificate. As an injara lover and taster, it is like nothing I have tasted before. If you want an introduction to Ethiopian food, you should DEFINITELY go to this restaurant.

Veggies were really tasty and you could differentiate individual flavours. Lamb though was gamey at times and sinewy, which is a bit of a shame. Injera was nice, its hard to describe it but its like a thin, sour, pancake of sorts, that soaks up curries and sauces well while giving them some tang.

I recently visited The Genet Cafe Ethiopian restaurant, and it was an amazing experience. So authentic and welcoming! The interior is beautifully decorated with items straight from Ethiopia, creating a wonderful atmosphere. The food was absolutely delicious. We had “Gomen Wot”, which is fresh cabbage cooked with onion, ginger, garlic, pepper, and Fora oil, and “Bozena Shero”, a spicy chickpea stew with pieces of lamb. Both dishes were bursting with flavor and perfectly cooked. I also tried the Ethiopian honey drink, and it was so special. Overall, an incredible dining experience that I highly recommend!

Yelp
Very good simple small Ethiopian restaurant with home-style food. I had the "Dulet" (lamb tripe) that was really good. Service is good and prices are fair for the portions. Cash only.
