The Meals That Got Us Through 2020

"Smoked streaky bacon “It wouldn’t be inaccurate to say that, pre-pandemic, the foxes going through the neighbour’s bins ate better-quality meals at home than my housemate and I. It’s not that we’re incapable (he is) but we’re just out people more than we’re in people. Both these things soon changed, and so too did the contents of our fridge. What it suddenly had, and continues to have most often, is smoked streaky bacon from The Ginger Pig. Their bacon - thick but not too thick, with a rind that gets your molars working - isn’t run-of-the-mill stuff. Its smell is siren-like, its price reasonable, and the first time we ate it (standing, next to the frying pan, in underwear) we said something poignant like “fuck me this bacon good.” - JM" - oliver feldman, heidi lauth beasley, jake missing, rianne shlebak

A (Brief) History Of London’s Best Snacks

"Pork and stilton sausage roll - £4 London isn’t lacking in the sausage roll department, nor even gourmet sausage roll department, but The Ginger Pig’s stilton-laced unit stands above the rest flavour-wise. The pork is juicy, its flavour very much present, while the stilton acts as a deliciously pungent seasoning. Ketchup, for us, is non-negotiable." - heidi lauth beasley, jake missing, rianne shlebak

15 Great Pies to Eat in London

"Everyone’s favourite bougie butcher makes bits and bobs for its bakery in the traditional style, because — it says — historically, pastry was a way of making meat go further (see also: Yorkshire puddings). They do sausage rolls and hot pies, but the picnic pies are where it’s at. The ingredients in this one are layered up a treat inside a hot water crust, with jelly made the old-fashioned way with pigs’ trotters." - Laura Goodman, James Hansen

The Ginger Pig Review - London Bridge - London - The Infatuation

"Best known for homemade black pudding, scotch eggs, and lovely yellow corn-fed French chickens that cost the same as a round of puddle-flavoured and kookily-named IPAs, The Ginger Pig is one of London’s best butchers. It’s got locations in north, east, and west London - though if you’re looking for things to eat there and then, the Borough Market spot is likely your best bet. Otherwise what you’ve got is, quite simply, a very good butcher. Their smoky streaked bacon and ever-changing sausages (look out for the spicy Italian) are excellent, as are the pork pies." - Jake Missing

Google
Gotta try the famous sausage roll here. We came in the morning and enjoyed a hot sausage roll, the meat was seasoned well and the pastry was buttery and flakey. We also tried a Scotch egg for the same of trying it and knew it would be cold, but nevertheless wish it was something they would serve hot. It was a bit more dry since it was cold. The line moved fast

Google
The line for this shop was down the block at 11:30am on a Sunday, and I had to wait for around 30 minutes to get my sausage roll. I understand the hype, as this was not a typical sausage roll like the ones you get from Greggs. This one was THICK. Every bite was super meaty and flaky. I loved it!

Abraham Lee

Google
Was doubtful initially on the “world famous” mark on their sign but really enjoyed it! The sausage rolls are fantastic, pastry is perfectly flaky and buttery, and the sausage filling is generous and flavorful without being too greasy. It has just the right amount of seasoning, and the meat is high-quality, making each bite really satisfying. We had to queue for a bit to get it but well worth the queue.

Google
If you're visiting Borough Market you NEED to try a sausage roll at The Ginger Pig. This was hands down the BEST thing I ate on our entire trip to England. The sausage is huge, the puff pastry is delicious and the cheese layered within just makes the whole thing amazing. Cannot emphasize enough just how freaking delicious these sausage rolls are.

Google
Ok, I don't this at all. Proper queue for a very average sausage roll, but definitely a very disappointing Scotch Egg (which we were advised that it's to be eaten cold). The Scotch Egg was quite an experience, if this is a representative of English cuisines, then we've gotten a firm answer why English is not known for its foods. The fried layer of minced meat around the egg was dry/ cold and not particularly flavorful, and the egg was simply hard boiled. We did not get through it. Please pardon our harsh opinion, we do consider ourselves food snobs, coming from an Asian country obsessed with what we eat ;)

I visited for an early lunch on a Thursday. Arriving shortly after 12pm, there was a small queue but no more than 5 minutes or so. The menu lists 5 types of pastries - including pork, lamb, beef and veg options - but I cannot recall if all 5 were available at the time. I went for the spicy lamb sausage roll (£7) and also bought one of their fancy glass bottle mini ketchups for £1.50. The pastry was well packaged and managed to retain its heat. The flavours however were fairly average. It was still quite enjoyable - it’s hard to go wrong with a warm meaty pastry, but at the same time there was nothing special or memorable about it. The ketchup was totally ordinary and a waste of £1.50 in hindsight. I’ve now tried about 5-6 of the more popular vendors in Borough Market and am increasingly convinced the whole place is just a tourist trap (Bread Ahead is the only one I rate highly from the places I’ve tried). This is in sharp contrast with the sit down restaurants that surround the market where we are now spoilt for choice with a number of high quality options such as Kolae, Rambutan, Hawksmoor and others…

My friend and I literally stopped someone in their tracks asking where they got their delightfully looking sausage roll. They directed us to the Ginger Roll around the corner from where we were standing. So glad that we picked one up before leaving out of Borough Market. Believe them when they say "World Famous", the roll came out piping hot and tasted almost like a breakfast sausage wrapped in a flaky, buttery dough. Wow. I'd be lying if I told you that I don't think about this Sausage Roll often. Seriously, you've got the check them out. It'll be worth it.

Google
Truly incredible flaky buttery pastry with a very generous portion of filling. The beef stew is so tasty and the lamb roll has a pronounced flavor for mutton fans. A must try at this market!

Yelp
If you are running about Boroughs Market you MUST get a sausage roll from the Ginger Pig. Hands down the most unique and delicious bite for me from the day. In the states we don't have proper sausage rolls and for the last year after the social media influence around sausage rolls I've been dying to get one. The Ginger Pig lives up to the hype and makes an amazing roll. I learned that this sausage roll is made with more prime ingredients then the traditional fast food sausage roll that you can get from Greg's, etc. I was told the sausage pork makeup of this roll is much more quality mixings and that was definitely apparent when it comes to taste. The outer pastry was light and fluffy. The inside was a huge thick piece of sausage, I was shook. But man does it taste delicious! Super rich and flavorful, I couldn't eat one to myself so I'd recommend splitting it. It was such a great and rich bite, truly unique to where I come from. This place most certainly lived up to the hype and you definitely need to give it a try when in London.

Yelp
Located in Borough Market this stall specializes in Sausage Rolls and Scotch Eggs but they are also a butcher selling fresh pork. We came on a Saturday and like most other popular stalls there is a lineup to order food and for the most part it moves fairly well. We waited about 15-20 minutes. The sausage roll comes ready to eat and is hot! The pastry was light and flakey with a very generous filling of sausage meat. The scotch egg is cold but is ready to eat. The egg was cooked well and there was a generous layer of sausage meat surrounding it. While this was cold I would recommend eating it the same day purchased. You can ask them to cut the items in half so that it is easier to eat.

Yelp
There's always a line here but it moves pretty fast. I recently discovered sausage rolls so I was super eager to this really famous one. Although I love sausage rolls, I generally don't like meat and very meaty things (I like a breadier meatball or a sausage that has a lighter, brighter taste). This sausage roll leans to the heavier, richer and meatier side of things. We weren't able to finish this in one go, but highly recommend if you like things on the meatier side.

Yelp
OMG the spicy lamb roll only wish they had heated scotch eggs for us tourists maybe I should try one cold
google avatar

Sarah C.

Yelp
had to try the famous sausage roll; the pastry was flaky and the sausage was flavorful but altogether it was just too greasy
google avatar

Briana N.

Yelp
My intention in getting a sausage roll was just to try an English staple and that I could already imagine what meat and pastry would taste like together. But that sausage roll was probably the best one I've ever had! They heat it up so it's piping hot and the crust gets all flaky: perfect for a chilly morning. And the meat inside looks dense but it's so moist and tender and it practically comes apart in your mouth. Not to mention, it's seasoned really well too. As for the scotch egg, we did not finish it. I had always thought it was supposed to be eaten hot, but the guy behind the counter let us know it was supposed to be eaten cold. The egg itself was good and the yolk was a really beautiful golden color. But eating the surrounding cold bland meat was not my favorite thing to do. I can imagine it being a lot better if it was hot and crispy as well. So if I ever got it again, I would take it home and reheat it. (Disclaimer: this is coming from American taste buds!!)

Yelp
I got the famous traditional sausage roll. While I wish the sausage was seasoned a bit more, I can't deny that the meat quantity and quality was great for £6 and the the pastry shell of the roll was perfectly buttery and flaky, reminded me of a patechaud. It took me 2-3 days to finish the roll because it was so dense. Overall great value for money!

Yelp
One of the few staples of UK is the sausage roll and this place SLAMS IT OUT OF THE WORLD ! Had came here on a Sunday morning right when it opened. This was recommended by the Korean Englishman youtuber so it was a must try for me. At 5 GBP for a TRADITIONAL SAUSAGE ROLL, it was probably one of the most DELICIOUS things I've ate in London ! (Not to down play other foods, it was just THAT GOOD) Piping hot, savory sausage roll wrapped in a oh so buttery, flaky pastry dough OH MY GOD this was DELICIOUS ! I could literally eat this every day (IM SO SAD NOW). If you plan on sharing this, you can ask them to cut it for you too ! (No I was not super hungry, i had breakfast before coming here because borough market didn't open til 10am on Sunday) MUST HAVE ! MUST EAT ! MUST RECOMMEND ! GET IT !
google avatar

Yelp
heard many things about the sausage rolls at ginger pig so had to try one while at borough market! i recommend sharing one if you plan to try other things at the market since they are of decent size (they cut it in half for us). // traditional sausage roll (5 pounds) // the sausage roll is a decent portion (quite thick): it consists of meat wrapped in puff pastry. i appreciated that the sausage meat itself was juicy and the puff pastry was crispy and light (not too greasy). the downside is aside from the meat and pastry, i expected more flavor or seasoning in the roll, since it tasted quite plain. in hindsight, i probably would have gotten the spicy sausage roll or a flavored one--i didn't expect that the traditional roll would be so simple (or plain). regardless, the meat and puff pastry were of high quality and tasted good.

Yelp
The sausage roll was well seasoned and warm. It hit the spot. Definitely worth trying.

Yelp
After our visit to the Tower of London, we decided to walk across the bridge and have lunch at the Borough Market. Hearing great things about sausage rolls and scotch eggs, we saw the line at the Ginger Pig and decided to try it out. The quail scotch egg was surprisingly cold - and the egg was hard boiled to the point that the yolk was greyish. I found this tasted dry but may have tasted better if it was hot. I had ordered the spicy lamb sausage roll which was piping hot! The pastry was greasy from all the lamb juice. The roll was packed with a ton of meat and was definitely filling. The roll was bigger than I thought it would be (felt more like I was eating a meat pie). You'll definitely need a drink of water while eating this! Overall, a quick filling lunch at the market.

Yelp
Every time we come to London, we always stop by Ginger Pig to get their sausage roll! Even though we want to try their Scottish egg, it seems like they're always sold out :( Ginger pig is located in borough market, so come here and split a sausage roll because you will be too full to try other things in the market!
google avatar

Claudine L.

Yelp
I didn't expect much as it was a sausage roll but this was amazing. The flavour of the meat was surprisingly good and the actual pastry itself as well. It wasn't too salty or anything but complemented each other. The roll itself was also big and I shared it with my partner and we both were pretty full from eating half. Would wanna try the lamb one next time we're in town.

Yelp
This stand is located in Borough Market. I tried the quail scotch egg and the sausage roll. The quail scotch egg was cold, and not really my thing. The outer casing (supposedly baked/fried sausage meat coated with breadcrumbs) didn't taste like much. The sausage roll was huge and piping hot! The meat tasted like a meatball. It was a little on the salty side though.
google avatar

Molly H.

Yelp
We came to the ginger pig as part of a food tour and had their sausage rolls. Wow they were tasty! Very flavorful sausage in a pastry dough. Luckily our guide divided the sausage roll into thirds because it would've been way too much for each of us to have a whole one. We just wish it would've come warm - unsure if that's how it is served or if it was just late in the day, but it makes the pastry dough a little bit soggy.
google avatar

Brittany S.

Yelp
We had to have one Scotch egg to round out our British eats experience before heading home. Lo and behold, there was the Ginger Pig at Borough Market to save the day. The line moved quickly and I was able to order their traditional scotch egg. They also offered sausage pies and Scotch eggs made with quail eggs. I don't know if this is an everyday occurrence but the Scotch egg was served cold while I was there. It threw us off a bit but the flavor was good. I noticed that they also served individual meat and veggie pies which would be especially helpful for locals to pick up for take and bake. Overall, a speedy and tasty visit.
google avatar

Chris M.

Yelp
I had a Spicy Lamb Sausage Roll that I enjoyed although I cannot compare it with anything else as it was the first one I have tried. Overall it is not cheap but given the quantity of meat inside (it doesn't seem so but it is totally filled!) it is fair.
google avatar

Marcy D.

Yelp
Tourist Tip - the scotch eggs are not going to be hot. They are really good and the size of your face but just be aware of that. The sausage rolls are *chef's kiss* goodness I miss them. Don't let your eyes deceive you here, if you have a group that you are willing to share items with - do it - otherwise you will fill up very quickly and not be able to enjoy all the other tastes of the market.
google avatar

Hannah K.

Yelp
I had a scotch egg here, and it wasn't great. It was as big as a tennis ball, but it was cold and didn't have much flavor. There was a long line at this stand, but it moved very quickly. They had many delicious looking pies and rolls, so I would go back, but I would definitely get something else.
google avatar

Yelp
SAUSAGE ROLLS!! SOOOOO GOOD!!! Had heard about them and were dying to try them and it did not disappoint. Juicy and flavorful sausage all wrapped up in lovely puff pastry. Sausage was perfectly cooked and the pastry had an excellent flakiness to it. My favorite dish at Borough Market hands down.

Ryan L.

Yelp
One of the best sausage rolls I've had. Butchery quality is top notch. Not cheap, but absolutely worth it.
google avatar

Taylor H.

Yelp
A great place for lunch! Popped into Borough Market for lunch and picked up a huge sausage roll! They do not skimp on the pastry and meat. It felt like he handed me a dumbbell when he passed it across the counter. Meat was juicy. Pastry was flakey. Couldn't ask for anymore. £4 per sausage roll. Loads of other tasty meats, will be back!
google avatar

Amanda S.

Yelp
This spot is within the Borough Market, where all the ingredients are bought within the market to use. This was one of the many stops we had during a secret food tour and this was one of favorites. We had sausage within thin pastry-like texture to share among 4 people. One is too much and too large for a person to eat so be sure to split. However, the many sausages they have at the shop are delicious especially made inside a thin, flakey, crispy pastry. Would recommend trying here if you're in the market.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is a little hard to find. It is AT Borough Market without being IN Borough Market. It is on the outside of the building facing the street so don't waste your time walking up and down looking inside like I did. It is directly opposite Monmouth Coffee which is hard to miss because of the all day line outside. Justplain superb sausage rolls and don't baulk at the price because they are HUGE.
google avatar

Megan K.

Yelp
The BEST sausage roll I've ever had, hands down! The service was super fast and friendly in the middle of Borough Market. For 4.50 pounds, the portion size was huge and I ended up sharing it with my two friends. It was extremely flavorful with all the spices and had a great flaky crust. Highly recommend if you're in the area. Even if you're not in the area, you should make a stop here!
google avatar

Yelp
Carrying on my carnivorous theme from our recent 'Chicken Autopsy YEE', Ginger Pig is one of my favourite butchers. I pop in here when I'm visiting Borough Market. The main draw is their amazing meat, reared on their own Yorkshire farms. You can get lamb, beef and pork as well as the harder to find mutton. They control the whole process from the rearing of the meat to the butchery. They also cure their own meats and make 20 varieties of sausages including gluten-free varieties. I love talking to the guys on the stall, who love their product but can also give you great tips on the different cuts of meat and the best way to cook each part of the animal. They do run butchery classes too, which sound very tempting. Top class butchers
google avatar

S R.

Yelp
Superb sausage rolls (pig in a blanket?) at Borough market. About 3GBP for each roll, but it is massive (both pastry and the sausage). Repeat: Yes
google avatar

Brski B.

Yelp
The sausage roll is famous for a reason - simple though it is, it would be one of my favorite things eaten in all of London. But is a sausage roll worth 5 stars? Probably not, but it's tempting...
google avatar

Kamron S.

Yelp
Stopped here as part of a food tour and got to try and incredibly delicious sausage roll. It was an amazing experience the roll was flaky and the sausage cooked and seasoned to perfection it was incredibly enjoyable.
google avatar

Hope C.

Yelp
Holy schnikeys! I am a sausage roll addict, and never in my life have I tried a roll as tasty as this one. On the edge of Borough Market, the Ginger Pig is a place you simply CANNOT MISS if you're a lover of offals and meats. The sausage roll weighed about a pound and the sausage meat itself was heavenly -- salty, sage + thymey, juicy. Flaky, buttery pastry. Heaven in every bite. There's not much more to say. Ginger Pig, you're in my dreams.
google avatar

Daniel F.

Yelp
Fantastic meats and a fantastic selection of pies and sausage rolls for you to eat as stroll around the market as I often do.

Dorothy T.

Yelp
First time sausage roll eater, I have to say this was one of the best things I've ever eaten. Paired it with a little bottle of some kind of chocolate cab from a little wine stand nearby. Sounds like an odd pairing but was delicious. We ate and drank standing to the side in the middle of the market. Days later I was in the Harrods Food Hall and spied their sausage rolls. Ginger Pig was a 10. The Harrods roll was a 6. The quality of the sausage could not be compared. Run don't walk to Ginger Pig.
google avatar

Angela B.

Yelp
A world class butchers. The main reason is because all of their produce comes from their own farms where the livestock are treated with the highest of care, and this is certainly reflected in the quality and taste. The staff are so helpful and knowledgeable too so don't be afraid to ask questions. There's all types of ready to buy cuts, poultry, homemade meat pies, sausages and more. I'm still looking for the ginger pig though.
google avatar

Andrew M.

Yelp
Short version: great quality meat, knowledgeable butchers, can be a bit of a wait on the weekend The Ginger Pig in Borough market provides delicious meat from a variety of animals. I typically go there for steaks and roasts, items where the flavour of the meat is the main focus of the dish. You can also get various stewing and braising cuts, but generally in this case the flavourings and sauce/other ingredients will overpower the meat flavour and you are probably better off saving some money and going to tesco/waitrose. Another benefit is the ability to ask the butcher how to prepare and cook the meat. They will be happy to provide recipe suggestions and also provide advice on how to best handle the item in quesiton.
google avatar

Matt C.

Yelp
This is my go-to butcher. The Ginger Pig has to be the best butcher in town employing the nicest and most helpful staff. And at a reasonable cost. I have never received bad service, advice, or a cut of meat from this place. They have about everything you need as far as meat, poultry, and pork are concerned. Choose from a dozen or more kinds of sausages, cuts of meat, and bacon. This place is as good as it gets and I will keep coming back as long as I'm in London
google avatar

Lauren V.

Yelp
Always super helpful when I pop in for some meat for a special occasion. The first time I came in, it was because all my US carne asada recipes called for flank steak. Ain't nobody in London heard of flank steak. So I explained to the GP butcher how the meat would be prepared and cooked and he recommended something that worked great (ongelet). On that trip I also dropped my card into their monthly drawing - and I won! I could choose between two of their amazing pasties or an entire beef shin. Mama didn't raise no dummy so I picked up the beef shin and made an incredible stew (casserole) that Sunday. They are open early early (like 7am I think) and there is no line whatsoever when I drop in around 8 on my way to work. It's great! If you want to try the lovely fresh, local meats without cooking it yourself, head around the corner to Roast to Go for a pork sandwich for lunch or a bacon buttie for breakfast.
google avatar

Yelp
Brilliant place to stock up on your meat needs. Got the pork & leek and the traditional pork sausages. They were succulent, juicy, and very flavorful. And at 5.50 GBP for six sausages, it is not bad VFM either.
